Systematic near-field vibration monitoring of stope blasts was carried out in a large, deep underground mine. A total of 31 production blasts were studied in order to investigate the effectiveness of existing blast designs. This involved the vertical retreat mining method, which requires drilling a raise bore or blasting a slot raise (typically 1.22 m in diameter) using large diameter boreholes (165 mm). The diagnostic technique employed multistation near-field monitoring of blasts with high-g (100 g) and high-frequency (>10 kHz) triaxial accelerometers. The amplitude of the vibrations is correlated with the strain energy transmitted from each explosive deck. The results showed that more than 30 per cent of the explosive decks contributed little energy to the rock breakage process in these blasts, and an equal number contributed only inadequately. These findings are indicative of serious blast malfunctions. The problems can be traced to inadequate deck blast design and possibly to drill hole deviation. Large-scale infrastructure construction needs to comprehensively manage risks that can impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers (temporary, contracted or full time), to families and surrounding communities. This paper starts with an analysis of incidents (injury, fatality, other damage) in tunnel construction between 2000 and 2014 and assesses the distribution of these events by continent, year, and severity of outcomes. These incidents are then analysed and mapped to a framework of hazards derived from RISKGATE (2014). A comparative register of current tunnel construction risk management guidance is derived from current Australian codes of practice and this register is also mapped to the RISKGATE framework of hazards to identify where coal industry knowledge may offer utility to the tunnelling industry.An initiative of the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed to assist the mining industry in implementing continual improvement in the management of major unwanted events. To date, a comprehensive knowledge base has been captured for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human/machine interface, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, inrush and occupational hygiene. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.This paper proposes and outlines how knowledge within the RISKGATE platform could be applied to managing the significant health and safety risks associated with tunnelling. The authors suggest that to varying degrees the knowledge already captured in RISKGATE is likely to be transferable to tunnelling construction operations. OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena mine is a Sublevel cave mine located in South Australia, approximately 160 km north of the regional centre of Port Augusta. Carrapateena commenced underground development in 2016, with production commencing in 2019 and ramping up to 4.25 Mtpa by December 2020. In pursuit of continual improvement, the Carrapateena mining team sought to identify how it could better interrogate its current productivity levels and its drivers (root causes). During this process the team were confronted by a disconcerting number of different opinions (which often conflicted) on our actual productivity performance which led to a need for review. Although reliable data and a well-designed time utilisation model (TUM) existed, it was still unclear what actions needed to be put in place to improve productivity. This was for the following reasons: • Data sources were disparate unless significant effort was applied to compile them. • Data sources were not available in a format that could be easily viewed or analysed. • General understanding of the data which was collected and how it could be used was poor. • Process of regularly analysing performance and forming tangible actions to improve was lacking rigour. A project was then started with the goal to fix the areas stated above. An initial requirements gathering exercise was undertaken to identify key data sources for site which returned a staggering 42 known systems which were then shortlisted to the key systems that contained operational data and could generate tangible improvements when analysed. This paper discusses the approach to selecting the OZ Minerals Insights Hub as the chosen platform, and the effort and collaboration between cross-functional departments that was involved in transforming the data so it could be displayed in a useful way. The data sources identified included a fleet management system, two planning databases, a control system historian, and a mobile fleet machine data system. New processes were also introduced to digitally capture daily commentary; this was achieved utilising SharePoint Forms. Data pipelines were then developed in the Insights Hub platform to automate the ingestion and transformation of the raw mining data into curated data models for end user consumption. Tableau dashboard packages have been created to support facilitation of short interval control, daily review meetings, and weekly review meetings as well as data analysis of key equipment and locations. These dashboards visualise the mining data models in a form that provides the user a clear picture of what has occurred, why it has occurred, and where to focus improvement efforts. This has resulted in a team which is more accountable, more equipped to assess the root cause of performance, and more regularly able to make data driven decisions. The next step? To build this out from Mine to Mill and create a data indexing tool which will drive self-service reporting, a data agnostic platform and predictive tools that help our people continue to be one step in front.

Orica Mining Services (Orica) in partnership with Coal and Allied’s Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) has developed a risk management process to maximise mining efficiency whilst controlling vibration and maintaining critical electricity continuity to New South Wales (NSW) electricity grid in the Riverview Pit. The issue is a high tension tower which supplies electricity located within 40 m of mining and blasting activities. The process involved developing an understanding of the relationship between vibration, explosives, geology and the location of the blasting in the geological horizon. From this an optimum methodology for blasting in each region was developed.

Many aspects of water use in mining are driven by the technical requirements for water. There has been little consideration given to both the safety and the health requirements. Workers in the mining industry are exposed to water from a range of treated and untreated sources. The intended use of this water dictates the required quality of the water, sometimes with limited consideration for contact with miners. Particularly for underground workers, there is exposure while working in and walking through groundwater possibly contaminated by hazardous substances. Where controls are inadequate the outcomes of this exposure can result in disease, illness and injury û the costs of which can be significant. The situation could also arise where, due to the lack of human exposure, the controls are unwarranted and the financial cost unjustified from a health perspective but warranted from an equipment management standpoint. In addition to the health aspects, water can impact on a range of safety issues resulting from high pressure usage, dust suppression, fire fighting and other processes. The protocols and procedures in place need to consider the safety issues in addition to managing water usage. The current state of water management in mines from an occupational health and safety perspective has been ascertained from a survey targeting underground and surface coal and metalliferous mines. This survey considered the health and safety issues associated with water use, the types of surveillance, control protocols and the strategies that the mines have in place to manage the health and safety risks associated with water systems. The results assisted in the identification of potential occupational health and safety risks associated with water systems and the management processes that may be appropriate from a risk management perspective. Health and safety issues are often neglected but remain critical issues affecting the value of water to the mining industry.

The fluorspar deposits at Okorusu, Namibia are closely related to an alkaline igneous ring complex of late Cretaceous age (125¦7 Ma). The fluorite ores consist of relatively fine-grained purple replacement fluorite and subsequent coarser-grained purple and green vug-filling fluorite crystals. Homogenisation temperature measurements for 38 primary fluid inclusions shows that main stage purple to green fluorite crystals were deposited over a temperature range from 166¦C to 144¦C, and minor late yellow fluorite was deposited at lower temperatures from 132¦C to 128¦C. Homogenisation and freezing temperatures measured for 18 primary fluid inclusions shows that the fluorite-depositing fluids were less saline than Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) ore fluids and overlap the lower temperature range of fluids that deposited epithermal ore deposits. Mining in three open pits (A, B and C) at Okorusu has gradually provided exposures which reveal that the fluorite orebodies have been emplaced primarily by the preferential replacement of carbonatites. Evidence for the replacement of carbonatite includes: replacement remnants of carbonatite within the fluorite ores; goethite pseudomorphs after the carbonatite minerals, pyroxene, pyrrhotite and magnetite, which are disseminated in the fluorite ores; andpartial replacement by fluorite of a large sill-like carbonatite body in the A pit. Electron microprobe analyses of minerals in unreplaced portions of the carbonatites show that their mineralogy consists of titaniferous magnetite, diopside pyroxene, apatite, biotite and calcite. Magnetite contains 6.97 per cent to 10.46 per cent TiO2, averages 8.44 per cent TiO2, and has an average V2O3 content of 0.35 per cent. At high magnifications under the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the magnetite shows abundant fine ulv÷spinel exsolution lamellae arranged in a cloth texture. Apatite contains moderately high fluorine contents that range from 3.21 to 5.0 per cent and average 4.2 per cent, and apatite crystals range in total rare earth oxides from 1.7 per cent to 2.61 per cent. Pyroxenes in the carbonatites are iron-rich diopside, and they contrast to pyroxenes in the fenites that are aegirine-augite. All of the microprobe analyses for mica crystals in the carbonatites give biotite compositions. Microscopic examination of fluorite concentrates from Okorusu provides mineralogical information important to the resolution of beneficiation problems. Fluorite ores that are related to carbonatites are typically accompanied by phosphorus benefication problems. The cause for the presence of phosphate in some of the Okorusu fluorite concentrates is a function of the presence of binary locked fluorite-apatite particles. The fluorite ores have also replaced marble locally in the A pit, especially along the A band in the B pit, and dominantly in the orebody proposed for the new C pit. Those ores are characterised by fine grain sizes, faint remnant bedding, lack of carbonatite mineral pseudomorphs and local presence of remnants of unreplaced marble. Concentrates derived from those fluorite ores are devoid of phosphorus, but commonly have elevated silica contents due the presence of free quartz. Carbonatite and marble were preferentially replaced by fluorite because the calcite was readily soluble in the presence of the fluorite-depositing fluids and the dissolution of calcite provided calcium for the formation of fluorite.

The Mabilo copper-gold-magnetite skarn deposit is located in southern Luzon in the Paracale mineral district, where iron has been produced historically from several skarn deposits. Mabilo occurs in the south-west of the district and is distinct and significant because of its high grades of copper and gold compared to historical mines.The Mabilo licence surrounds the Venida prospect, where past small-scale mining has exploited iron, copper and gold mineralisation in oxidised skarn. A ground magnetic survey in 2007 defined a number of strong anomalies under Quaternary volcanic cover south of Venida. The property was acquired by Sierra Mining Ltd in 2011, the magnetic data were remodelled and drilling commenced in September 2012. Diamond drill hole MDH001 targeted the strongest anomaly, which was 500 m south of Venida and under 20 m of volcanic cover. It intersected 94 m with an average grade of 2.2 per cent copper, 1.6 g/t gold and 36.6 per cent iron. Subsequent drilling was targeted by magnetic modelling, incorporating magnetic susceptibility data from drill core, which resulted in a high percentage of successful drill holes.The mineralised skarn preferentially replaces a dipping limestone unit within an Eocene sequence dominated by volcanic siltstone and sandstone, metamorphosed to marble and hornfels in the aureole of a Miocene quartz-diorite intrusion. Skarn occurs discontinuously along the eastern and southern diorite contact, controlled by primary sedimentary facies variation, structural geometry, fault offsets and intrusive contacts.Coarse magnetite skarn with garnet and minor wollastonite and clinopyroxene contains variably abundant chalcopyrite and minor molybdenite. Magnetite skarn occurs in sharp contact with unaltered marble or grades into garnet skarn with minor chalcopyrite. Structurally controlled retrograde skarn alteration is strong to intense and is characterised by bornite, clinozoisite, iron carbonate and chlorite. The retrograde skarn is weakly overprinted by late-stage pyrite veining and brecciation associated with clay-silica alteration with arsenopyrite and tetrahedrite-tennantite.The quartz-diorite stock is interpreted as the source of the prograde skarn-forming and mineralising fluids. Late-stage porphyritic intrusions in the contact zone indicate continuing magmatism during uplift, when telescoping led to a high-level, high-sulfidation overprint. The Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) is a self-contained, highly instrumented, mobile pilot plant. It was developed as part of the AMIRA P9 project, primarily to determine ore floatability characteristics and to develop and validate flotation plant modelling, scale-up and simulation methodologies. This paper describes the use of the FCTR in validating the AMIRA P9 flotation model and modelling methodology. In 2001 the FCTR was installed and operated in parallel with WMCÆs (now BHP BillitonÆs) Kambalda Nickel Operation. The FCTR was operated using four different circuit configurations of increasing complexity. Metallurgical surveys, cell characterisation measurements and batch flotation tests were performed around each circuit. This allowed the calibration of a number of flotation models using a combination of data from one, two, three or four circuit configurations. The calibrated flotation models were then validated using predictive validation. To do this, data around a further five FCTR circuit configurations were collected (three of which are presented in this paper). The performance of each of the five circuit configurations was predicted using JKSimFloat V6.1 and the parameters from the various calibrated flotation models. The predicted performance was compared to the experimentally determined performance of each circuit. The validation of the AMIRA P9 model was shown to be largely successful except in the case where the reagent addition (depressant) to the validation circuit was different to that in the calibration circuits. The results also provided information regarding the required complexity of the calibration circuit and how many calibration circuits are required to obtain an accurate prediction of circuit performance. These results have increased the confidence in the AMIRA P9 flotation modelling methodology and have provided important information on what data must be collected to allow the accurate prediction of plant performance using the floatability component modelling approach.

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) operates the Cayeli underground copper mine in Turkey. In response to a lost time incident (LTI) that occurred at the mine in 2022, the mine management decided to introduce a new safety approach on-site. The initiative began with a comprehensive safety culture analysis conducted by Arti Consulting, involving focus group studies. Employees actively participated in candid discussions, sharing their insights on safety issues and offering solutions. These conversations were meticulously audio recorded, resulting in over 150 000 words collected from more than 100 employees. These transcribed narratives then underwent rigorous semantic analysis, with the assistance of a sociologist, to identify and dissect patterns of unsafe behaviour. This analysis found areas for improvement, particularly in near-miss and incident reporting, quality of safety toolbox talks and effectiveness of pre-work risk assessments. Subsequently, mine management deliberated on these insights and devised corrective actions. An emphasis was placed on involving all employees in the corrective actions through communication training, empowering them to own the decisions and changes made. These impactful measures were seamlessly integrated into FQM’s Think! Safety Program, which embodies FQM’s sensible health and safety strategy. FQM partnered with Strika Entertainment (Strika) to develop innovative visual-first safety communication tools that use illustration, animation and graphic design to simplify complex messaging into easy-to-understand edutainment. As part of this approach to safety communications, Cayeli and Strika revamped the safety toolbox talks to encourage employees to voice their concerns and receive feedback when their suggestions were implemented. The response from employees has been positive, with over 200 unsafe behaviours and conditions reported within the initial two months of launching the Think! Safety Program. Remarkably, the Cayeli Mine has not experienced any LTIs for the past 500 days as of 9 December 2023. This paper encapsulates the dedicated efforts to transform Cayeli into a safer mining operation.

The iron ore mining industry is currently going through an adjustment from high to more moderate growth as China’s economy transitions from capital-intensive investment to a more services-oriented economy. We are now witnessing a renewed focus on productivity improvements and cost savings as planned expansions are completed. Despite the scale and importance that the mining industry plays in the global economy, innovation literature is generally more targeted at faster-moving industries with shorter innovation timeframes and lower capital requirements. To fill this gap, VCI set out to understand the state of innovation in the mining industry in 2014. This State of Play report aims to give an objective appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of innovation in mining. The report has three sections covering both the structure and delivery of innovation in mining:Ecosystem – focused on understanding how the iron ore mining innovation ecosystem system works, including the roles of large and small miners, service companies, researchers and governments. Our recommendations focus on what is required for the system to work well and improve the level and quality of innovation in the industry.Strategy – how do companies define their innovation strategy in relation to their corporate strategy? How are these related to prevailing global and industry trends? How do they communicate this with their business? How successful are they? These are among the questions that this section attempts to answer. Our recommendations are pitched at the executive leadership of iron ore mining and service companies.Delivery – focused on how companies develop and deliver innovation, looking at the success of different structural options, leadership and culture, partnerships and the best approaches to change. Toughness testing of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) at 28 days age is typically undertaken as part of quality control for the many applications where fibres are used in concrete, including shotcrete, tunnel segments, and cast-in-place tunnel linings. The performance achieved at 28 days is usually assumed to be retained with increasing age. However, as the average strength grade of concrete used in most tunnelling applications, including tunnel segments, has steadily increased over the last 20 years, this assumption is becoming increasingly unviable. This is because for some types of fibre the mode of post-crack fibre behaviour depends on the strength of the concrete and can change from a desirable high-energy pull-out mode to a low-energy rupture mode as the strength and age of concrete increases. This paper describes a series of trials performed over two years in which the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C1609/C1609M beam tests were used to assess the performance of FRC reinforced with two widely used brands of steel and macro-synthetic fibre. The hooked-end steel fibres used for half the beams exhibited a dramatic fall in performance beyond 56 days age as the mode of failure changed from pull-out to rupture. The other fibre did not exhibit a fall in performance with age. This phenomenon highlights the need to quantify performance of FRC at much later ages when long-term performance is required, for example, to resist seismic events or changes in ground stress due to nearby excavations. The Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator has an extensive history of reagent trials, with different reagents coming in and out of favour over the years. The research and use of carbon depressants is particularly prevalent, as carbonaceous pyrite is a major source of concentrate dilution. Years of research led to the use of naphthalene sulphonate due to its excellent carbon depression properties. However, due to rising reagent costs carbon depression ceased in the late 1990s. This led to the loss of knowledge about the use and value of naphthalene sulphonate. Cyanide is used at the Copper Concentrator for the sole purpose of pyrite depression and over the years multiple projects have been devoted to finding alternatives to it. In 2012 the neighbouring MIM Lead-Zinc Concentrator replaced cyanide with naphthalene sulphonate which resulted in cost savings and the elimination of a hazardous reagent. In 2013, plant trials were conducted at the Copper Concentrator in hopes to replicate the outcomes obtained at the Lead-Zinc Concentrator. The results of the trials conducted at the Copper Concentrator showed that naphthalene sulphonate could not replace cyanide and this work was set aside to pursue more promising projects. Further research conducted in 2014 found that mineralogy and a better understanding of the depressing mechanism of naphthalene sulphonate held the key to improved pyrite depression at the Copper Concentrator. The findings showed that Mount Isa copper ore contains two forms of pyrite; euhedral pyrite (cubic pyrite) and framboidal pyrite (carbon rimmed spheres of pyrite), both of which require different reagents to sufficiently depress them. Naphthalene sulphonate was found to be an excellent carbon depressant, suitable for depressing graphite and framboidal pyrite, whilst cyanide specifically targets euhedral pyrite.In 2015 laboratory test work was conducted to examine the use of naphthalene sulphonate in conjunction with cyanide to selectively target both forms of pyrite. This work led to a full plant trial, the results of which showed a significant increase in plant performance, with higher copper concentrate grades and recoveries being achieved. The Meekatharra mining district lies in the northern pan of the Murchison Province of the Archaean Ynlgam block of Western Australia. Since dis- covery of the Paddy's Flat belt in the district in 1897 total gold production has been 67 tonnes and a further 33 tonnes in resources have been defined by drilling. The Paddy's Flat gold deposits occur within the Gabanintha Formation, a basal formation of the Murchison greenstone sequence containing komatiitic basalts, ultramafics and minor banded iron formations. The regional control on the distribution of deposits is an anastomosing shear belt which extends over 350 km and incorporates the Mt Magnet, Reedys and Meekatharra deposits. The following gold deposit styles may be recognized based on lithological association and alteration: Albite porphyry hosted, Carbonate-fuchsite- quartz alteration hosted deposits, Banded Iron Formation hosted sulphide replacement gold deposits and quartz vein deposits. With the exception of the banded iron formation hosted deposits, the Paddy's Flat alteration zone shows strong similarities to the alteration styles at Kerr-Addison (Ontario).

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best ægrade descriptorÆ is discussed.

In the steelmaking process, mold fluxes are essential for ensuring thermal insulation, refining, and the efficiency of continuous casting. Real-time understanding of the in-service composition of slags and fluxes are crucial for optimising the steel production process and improving the quality of the final product. An in situ fibre-optic Raman probe that enables the study of the structure, composition, and viscosity of molten slags and fluxes at steelmaking temperatures has been developed and demonstrated both in the lab and in foundry scale experiments. The focus of this study is on the structural, compositional, and property analysis of molten fluxes in a laboratory setting, with the aim of applying this technology for in situ monitoring during industrial production. Raman spectra were successfully collected at various temperatures from 1000°C to 1400°C in real-time and analysed using a deconvolution algorithm to isolate and quantify peaks in the spectra associated with the specific structures of molecular components in molten and solidifying flux. The research successfully combines in situ Raman spectroscopy with high-temperature viscosity data, specifically targeting CaO-CaF-SiO2-Al2O3 based mould flux systems. Specified ratios of the deconvoluted Raman peaks, such as Al-O-Al/Si-O-Si ratio, shows good correlation with the flux chemistry, while the Q3/Q0 peak ratio shows good correlation with viscosity. A ruggedised Raman probe system was also developed and demonstrated in an 80 kg induction furnace. Ultimately, the goal of this work is to demonstrate in situ slag and mould flux analysis in industrial processes, such as in the continuous caster or electric arc furnace (EAF).

Following discovery in October 2004, commencement of development in February 2007 and first ore production in mid 2007, the Trident gold deposit, located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, has now been successfully mined for over three years. Three years of operational history has enabled the performance of the Trident underground mine to be reconciled against the mine plan and strategy proposed for the original feasibility study.The Trident deposit, initially based on two lode systems known as the Eastern Zone and Western Zone, has been continuously drilled, interpreted and re-interpreted over the period and as a result the addition of the Athena, Apollo and Artemis lode systems as well as numerous smaller scale lodes has been realised. The first three years has seen the Trident underground mine quickly move up to its 1 Mtpa design production rate. The mine plan and strategy used in the initial feasibility study and subsequently implemented, required sufficient flexibility to enable modification and optimisation to mine plans as ore zones were further defined. The ability to modify the mining plans has enabled Avoca to achieve its mining targets at Trident. With over 250 000 ounces gold produced to January 2010, the company is well positioned to achieve its ten year vision associated with the Higginsville Gold Project.This paper offers an account of operational experiences whilst providing comparison to assumptions and methodologies used in the original feasibility study. The paper is a sequel to a paper presented at the Tenth Underground Operators’ Conference held in Launceston, Tasmania titled Development Strategy of the Trident Underground Gold Mine.

Today, it can be said that the majority of mines utilise communications equipment in one form or another. Either for communications between staff making their day-to-day operations more efficient, or for emergency communications, as well as linking computer based mine management systems, and providing remote control over complex mobile and fixed machinery. With the advances in technology now available, we are moving into the next generation of mine communications equipment, using digital communications in the underground mine environment. It is a proven fact that an efficient underground mine communications system can help maximise production, by providing major gains in areas such as equipment and manpower utilisation, staff and vehicle tracking, reaction times to break downs and emergencies. In this paper we will describe some of the facilities that are currently available, as well as what will soon be available to mining and tunnelling companies around the world.

Conventional techniques for resource estimation generally involve the laborious analysis of variograms and the specification of parameters for covariance functions. In large deposits, construction of resource models and their update require significant amount of manual work, expert knowledge and time. In this paper we take a machine learning view to the problem of resource estimation. This is a non-parametric Bayesian method, leading to automatic parameter estimation (learning). Through Bayesian learning, the parameters of the model can be obtained by optimising a quantity known as the marginal likelihood. The main advantage of this approach over conventional maximum likelihood estimators is that the objective function incorporates the OccamÆs razor principle. This allows the comparison of different statistical models û for example, models designed with different covariance functions û and naturally penalises complexity, thus avoiding overfitting. Our technique presents significant flexibility for the definition of mean and covariance functions and permits the usage of more sophisticated models.The second contribution of this work is the formulation of a data fusion mechanism that continuously updates the resource model. As mining progresses, more information becomes available. For example, the hardness of the rocks can be measured while drilling blast holes, grades of ore and contaminants are obtained from cone logging. This information is in general available at a finer spatial resolution but can be more uncertain. The data fusion mechanism can seamlessly estimate the uncertainties of the different types of information and fuse them as new measurements are acquired. This procedure can significantly improve the quality of the resource model, defining new grounds for stochastic mine planning. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in estimating iron ore deposits by integrating information about different grades.

Adsorption Behaviours of Humic Substances onto Iron Ore Particle Surface Humic substances extracted from lignite mainly consist of fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA), which have been successfully used as good composite binders for iron ore pellets in laboratory tests and industrial production. However, there exists a general lack of understanding of the interaction between humic substances and iron ore particles surfaces. In this research, by means of zeta potential measurements, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum, colorimetric method and Environmental Scanning Electron Micrograph (ESEM) imaging, the adsorption behaviours of FA and HA onto the surfaces of iron ore particles are investigated. The zeta potential results indicate that adsorption of FA on the iron ore particles can be characterised by specific and electrostatic interactions, while adsorption of HA is by electrostatic and chemical adsorption interactions. FTIR spectrum results show that adsorption force of FA on the iron ore particle surfaces is stronger than that of HA. From results of colorimetric method, compared with HA, adsorption amount and adsorption rate of FA is more and faster, respectively. FA molecule presents on the surface of magnetite in the shape of an araneose network structure according to the ESEM images, while HA molecule appears on the surface of magnetite in the form of small flocs or microclusters. Humic substances are effective to iron ore pelletisation. Comparsion of agglomeration results show that the different mechanisms of adsorption result in varied agglomeration behaviours. Theses findings above would be beneficial to the implications of composite binder for agglomeration.

Spotted Quoll is a massive sulfide nickel deposit located in the Forrestania greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn block in Western Australia. Discovered in October 2007, mining has progressed from open pit to underground and currently uses longhole open stoping with paste fill as the primary stoping method. Immediately prior to 2019, the Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) was defined by a single grade domain of nickel greater than or equal to 0.8 per cent, irrespective of the host lithology, a legacy of the original ore wireframe being built using explicit methods. While a number of obvious structural offsets were honoured in this nickel grade domain, only one modelled fault was used to undertake domaining of arsenic. From 2019 onwards, implicit modelling in Leapfrog Geo™ was used to construct a mine-scale geological model, which triggered the definition of a high-grade core of massive/matrix nickel sulfides surrounded by a low-grade halo of stringer/disseminated nickel sulfides in the surrounding rock. As part of the evolution of the geological model and with the aid of Seequent Central™ to allow collaboration between site-based mine geologists, Perth-based resource geologists and Melbourne-based consultants, a detailed review of the structural mapping was carried out as additional information from underground development became available. This allowed numerous faults and shears to be identified – particularly in the lower half of the mine. These were used to define further structural domains and to refine the understanding of the nickel and arsenic grade distributions in the mineralised envelope. The increased definition to the domains provided by the geological model resulted in a significant improvement in the accuracy of the Mineral Resource estimate, as measured by reconciliation using voids of the mined stopes determined from the cavity monitoring survey (CMS).
