Currently, mining in Australia underpins the economic vitality of the nation, generating massive revenue from commodity exports and providing substantial infrastructure and employment. In addition, it is predicted that mining related services will in the future develop a global market of their own that could eventually grow to rival, in value, the export trade in mineral commodities. There is however little room for complacency. In the short- to medium-term, escalating, vigorous competition can be expected from many previously underdeveloped countries that are reforming their own mining and mineral export industries. In addition, most mining companies are facing a modem-day renaissance in terms of new expectations, changing social norms, evolving employee relations and statutory obligations. Thus, along with whatever promise the future might hold, the mining industry is currently being subjected to a growing number of largely unprecedented problems and pressures, both economic and social, that are both highly complex and demanding. In particular, it remains a matter of on-going concern that relations between mining companies and their employees still, in spite of recent reforms, continue to constrain productivity, perpetuate inefficiencies, affect quality of work life and retard progress towards mutually beneficial goals and achievements. If mining in Australia is to attain and hold on to a commanding position on the global scene, then further changes will clearly need to be made. Realisation of this appears to be growing, with most mining companies having attempted in recent years to improve workplace culture. Based on a wide ranging study, this paper presents an overview of what has been learned to-date with regard to the `people factor' when it comes to implementing and progressing positive change and reform in mining. From this, a number of practical suggestions, arising from hard won lessons and experiences in the field, are offered. Attention to the nine `key principles' given should help to ensure that many of the common problems encountered to-date with change and reform in the mining industry are in future avoided or at least minimised.

Basicity(aO2−) has been known to affect the physicochemical properties of molten slags in the metallurgical processes. However, because of the impossibility of direct measurement of single-ion activity, various indirect measures such as capacity, redox equilibrium of transition metal ions, activity of basic oxides, and (theoretical) optical basicity have been proposed; but these basicity measures have been restricted within slag systems and the interaction between measuring elements and slag components has affected the quantitative estimation of slag basicity. Recently, since it was reported that solubility of noble metals in molten slags could be an indirect measure of basicity, the influence of slag basicity on the solubility of platinum and silver has been reported. The reaction mechanism of platinum dissolution into basic slags has been reported, whilst that in acidic slags has not (Nakamura and Sano, 1997; Sano and Nakamura, 1997; Nakamura et al, 1998). Richardson reported that the solubility of metals such as cupper, gold, silver, and lead in the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slag was presumably dependent on the atomic radius and the accommodation ability of the silicate network (Richardson, 1974). Swinbourne and You measured silver solubility in the Na2O-SiO2 slag over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure and suggested that silver would be present as both Ago and Ag0.5 in the slags (Swinbourne and You, 1999). For brevity, these previous works discussed the dissolution mechanism of silver into the slags based on the existence of silver as a neutral or molecular species. However, because the almost chemical reactions occurring in the slag are affected by the basicity, the reaction formula with O2- ion is required based on the ionic characteristics of the slag such as desulphurisation and dephosphorisation reactions as given in Equations 1 and 2, respectively.

"Morro do Ouro Mine is a high tonnage/low-grade mine located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The mines move around 55 Mt of ore per year at an average grade of 0.4 g/t. The auriferous mineralisation of Morro do Ouro is related to hydrothermal fluids rich in arsenic (As), gold (Au), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). These percolated along favourable structures contained within phyllites of Upper Proterozoic age and defined a mineralised megaboudin which outcropped with 4 km extension and up to 2 km in width. The litologies in the interior of this structure are typically more deformed, sericitised and sulfidised, and exhibit the development of quartz boudins in the centre of the more deformed zones where are found the higher Au grades and the coarser sulfide crystals. Gold is preferentially associated with arsenopyrite, mainly occurring in fractures or aggregations of crystals and is rarely in solid solution or refractory. Over 90 per cent of the gold contained in the sulfide ore is free or extractable by cyanidisation. The current mineral reserve is 17.9 Mt at 0.403 g/t published at the end of 2012.In order to get a good grade estimation that represents the orebody more accurately a solids methodology was used to distinguish the different orebodies. Before 2011 the orebodies were worked with two domains relating to the weathered mantle. The B1 ore, which is oxidised, is located at the top of mineralisation, and is used to feed Plant 1. Underneath B2 ore, which is fresh sulfide bearing, represents over 30 years of production in Plant 2.In order to improve the predictability of gold grade estimation in geological modelling and to get a better predicting behaviour of each domain on the deposit, studies were carried out in which it was possible to show a correlation between elements and the mineralisation. One strong correlation and spatial distribution between Au and As, As and sulfur (S), Au and Pb, Au and Zn were found.Based on geochemistry, mineral correlations, amount of sulfide, structural deformation, texture of sulfides and the daily experience of the mine, it was possible to create solids that individualised bodies with similar mineralogical and chemical characteristics using the parameters listed above.After 2011, a new modelling concept was proposed and built with 11 different domains, compared with the previous, and with two more parameters: recovery acid neutralised capacity (ANC).Each of these bodies have different behaviours in mineral processing, like flotation and metallurgy. For example, bodies with pyrrhotite bring problems in the flotation, bodies with high arsenic do not recover well, bodies with high As with coarse texture have good recovery, bodies with fine texture do not have good adherence in production.In the present state of knowledge, protocols are being developed for bench testing to predict the recovery of each geochemical domain aiming to include these in the geological model for the parameter recovery. Subsurface fires are a common threat to coal mining, as spontaneous combustion of coal can potentially result in gas combustion and explosion. Fire-proof techniques, such as grouting, foam, or colloid injection, are not in a position to function ideally, due to the limited coverage and stopping the extinguishment substance from reaching the fire location. Liquid nitrogen, as a kind of all-submerged fire prevention or extinguishing method, can rapidly extinguish fires, thus preventing gas explosion and minimising extinguishment time. Injecting liquid nitrogen through boreholes is an important way during the period of mine catastrophe. But liquid nitrogen is not effective enough in infusion; technical issues restrict the development and utilisation of liquid nitrogen fire prevention and extinguishing technology. Immediate infusion of liquid nitrogen is usually associated with ‘air slug’ (the balloons and bubbles in the pipeline which hinder the flow of low-temperature liquid), which blocks pipelines for liquid nitrogen injecting. Another issue is that the pipeline tends to be damaged due to freezing, which undermines the injecting efficiency of liquid nitrogen and its application result. In order to solve the problems of the low efficiency and some other related field issues in liquid nitrogen perfusion, the ground–underground high efficiency liquid nitrogen injection technology were developed. Implementation of liquid nitrogen infusion techniques in Chinese coalmines achieved the goals of fire prevention and air-cooling. The technique presented in this paper is efficient in absorbing heat, and consequently, displacing oxygen and combustible gases. Field tests at Rujigou and Yangchangwan Coalmine justified the efficiency of the technique. By using this technique, there was no waste left behind, which may impede the subsequent production. An investigation into the mechanics of sub-surface deformation caused by caving of the extracted area behind retreating longwall faces has been completed by the Subsidence Engineering Section of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Minerals and Energy. Changes in strata bulk permeability were also measured by standard packer tests undertaken before and after mining. The strata movement was measured by a multi-wire borehole instrumentation system consisting of mechanical anchors installed at different horizons in a borehole extending from the surface to the coal seam. The mechanical anchors were collected to suspended weights on the surface by stainless steel multi-strand wires. The movement of these weights was monitored as the longwall face approached and retreated past the borehole. The anchors did not move significantly until the face went past the borehole. For subcritical extraction geometry with the extraction width to mining depth ratio of 124, the caving zone extended to roughly 9 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam roof. Tensile strains within the overburden tended to be much more closely related to stratigraphy than to the proximity to the extracted seam roof. Larger tensile strains were associated with layers of sandstone, siltstone and conglomerate, whereas layers of mudstones, claystones and coal underwent much smaller strains indicating subsidence in blocks. A beller correlation was observed between pre-mining Rock Quality Designation and permeability than between rock type and permeability. This correlation was less evident in the post-mining core logs. There was an overall increase in bulk permeability after mining.

Managing blasting operations in four mines surrounded by villages is a challenging task. This study aims to compare the blast-induced flyrock as observed in opencast mines by predicting flyrock distance using a soft computing approach known as an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and Flyrock Predictor software based on empirical studies. Blast design and geotechnical variables such as linear charge concentration, burden, stemming length, specific charge, unconfined compressive strength and rock quality designation were selected as independent variables, while flyrock distance was used as a dependent variable. Out of 120 blasts, data from 100 blasts was used to train and test the ANFIS model. Flyrock distance for the remaining 20 blasts was used to evaluate the model. Flyrock distance has also been predicted using Flyrock Predictor software based on an empirical approach using the same data sets as those used for ANFIS. Performance indices like root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error and coefficient of determination (R2) were evaluated to compare the reliability of ANFIS and Flyrock Predictor quantitatively. ANFIS was found to be a better predictive tool, with 1.75 m RMSE and 0.966 R2 compared to Flyrock Predictor, which returned RMSE and R2 values of 2.48 m and 0.932 respectively.CITATION:Trivedi, R, Singh, T N, Gupta, N and Bhandari, S, 2015. The Bellambi Coal Company Limited com menced longwall mining at South Bulli Colliery in 1965. At present it operates three long- wall units in two seams. Although results to date have been less successful than planned, it is apparent that this type of mining has tremendous potential in the particular conditions at South Bulli. Massive sandstone strata above the Bulli seam is the controlling influence on face conditions. The earliest equipment proved to be inadequate and the Company has progress- ively replaced and upgraded the roof supports and ancillary equipment so that the present units are capable of producing high and consistent outputs.

Rio Tinto’s Hunter Valley Operations is a large open pit coalmine situated in the heart of the Hunter Valley in Australia. The Riverview West Pit has faced increasing production challenges in recent times due to decreasing dragline strike lengths and increasing environmental constraints on vibration, overpressure and fume generation. Conventional mining techniques would involve five to six production blasts per strip to recover multiple coal seams. Each blast event carries the risk of exceeding the strict environmental requirements. By working collaboratively with Orica, it was realised that the blasting method known as Stratablast™, in conjunction with advanced computer modelling techniques, could provide productivity gains whilst simultaneously providing more control over the environmental effects and the impact on nearby infrastructure.As a result of this change, the number of blasts per strip was reduced to one, with the implication that a great deal of care and forethought was needed to manage the increased challenge posed by multiple constraints in the proposed mining area. This innovative approach of combining throw and stand-up blasts allowed the extraction of all major coal seams in a single pass blast event. The blasts were initially designed with a large factor of safety to stay within environmental limits as they were over 1.1 km in strike length, with more than 800 holes and with a total charge weight of about 1000 t of bulk explosives. Furthermore, there were conflicting priorities around the desired blast outcomes. So far, 11 such blasts have been designed and successfully fired. After each blast, innovative design changes have been iteratively implemented to provide further control over environmental impacts, whilst continuing to improve productivity. As a result of these changes, blasts have progressively increased in complexity with the inclusion of features such as damage zones, mid-splitting, time gaps and different directions of firing. The consequence of this complexity is that the blast duration can be as long as 28 seconds to accommodate all components of the blast.This project has increased the productivity of the Riverview West Pit through blast design improvements and allowed the environmental impacts to be managed with far more control and predictability than would have been possible under a conventional blasting regime. MOIL Limited is operating 7 underground and 3 opencast mines in central India and producing annually more than 1.2 million tonnes of various grades of manganese ore. The underground mines are operating at shallow - 90 m at Munsar mine to moderate - 353 m at Balaghat mine below the surface with horizontal cut and fill (HCF) or its variant method of stoping with post filling by hydraulic sand stowing. The Munsar mine is being worked underground since 1903. The opencast mining is presently stopped. The ore body below the opencast quarry is geological continuity of the area excavated in past by opencast method of mining. The underground mining is done through the adit in three levels i.e. 270’L, 220’L, 170’L and by incline in western part of the property at 70’L. The horizontal drift development has been developed in the manganese ore body with sill drive of 5 m above the sill pillar in lower level at 70’L and barrier pillar of 5 m thickness is left for protection of upper level at 170’L. Valuable mineral has been locked in sill pillar and therefore rock mechanics investigations have been carried out. On the basis of study now the drift development has been carried out in footwall rock at 70’L, (-) 30’L and below levels and it has improved the mineable manganese ore by about 20%. In this modified HCF stope design, an alternative fill material in place of sand, which has been developed in house by use of overburden (OB) material after treatment, has been used for hydraulic stowing. The experimental trials find out that the alternative fill material of OB is more compact and forming a non expansion floor for the men and machines in the stope. This will certainly help in the introduction of mobile underground mining equipment for drilling in the stopes and mechanical mucking, transportation and loading of the ROM. In the humid, subtropical climatic conditions, typical of Papua New Guinean high-lands, auriferous carbonate-quartz lodes and stockwork veins of the Upper Ridges mine at Wau, have weathered in situ forming manganese dioxide-quartz wad flatmakes and veins. Vein assemblages and sulphidized host breccia have been chemically weathered to 20-25m depth, and microscopic grains of electrum (550-600 fine) formerly enclosed in carbonate, sulphide and quartz have dissolved in the oxidizing alkaline fluid. Coarse secondary electrum, crystalline and dendritic, is concentrated by manganese dioxide and at the base of chemical weathering. Fineness is unchanged, eliminating the possibility of gold and silver migration as a chloride complex. Experimental tests on the stability of thiosulphate, and its ability to dissolve gold and silver from colloid, crystal and synthetic alloy confirm that secondary electrum at Upper Ridges is most compatible with precipitation from (Au,Ag)(S203)23-; a complex readily destabilized in the presence of MnO., or with decreasing Eh.

The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. A proper economic analysis of pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risks of slope fail- ure inherent in steeper slope angles. However, no formal framework for a proper analysis existed to date. This paper describes the results of the past four years' effort in which a formal eco- nomic analysis framework was developed and tested through a case study. This framework, in essence, consists of the availability of tested procedures and com- puter programs. The procedures as well as the programs are divided into two broad functional categories; (1) the first category related to assessing the economic benefits and costs associated with various pit slope angles and (2) the second category that determines the overall financial impact which the assessed benefits and costs exert to the mine operator's overall economic stature.

Mine-derived solutes from Energy Resources of Australia’s (ERA’s) Ranger uranium mine have been closely monitored for decades. Ranger is surrounded by the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park and is upstream of Ramsar convention wetlands. Modelling of groundwater flow and solute egress from mine wastes to surface waters has helped ERA successfully assess closure options and secure intermediate regulatory approvals during the site closure process. Potential environmental impacts were assessed using groundwater modelling in support of three ERA applications involving disposal of tailings-derived mine waste. Model results were an important part of the basis for obtaining regulatory approval. Three case studies are presented describing the three applications and how the groundwater modelling supported approval of the applications. For case study #1, INTERA supported ERA in addressing stakeholder concerns in 2017 regarding two aspects of tailings deposition in Pit 3. The first was the potential for flow of tailings fluid into the surrounding formations during tailings deposition. The second was the difference in post-closure magnesium (Mg) loading to surface water for two tailings deposition scenarios. INTERA developed a two-dimensional (2D) model that showed excess tailings pore pressures would not cause outflow and solute egress from the pit during deposition. INTERA’s three-dimensional (3D) models demonstrated that post-closure Mg loading to creeks for both tailings scenarios differed marginally and would be a small fraction of natural creek Mg loads. The modelling results helped avoid delays in completing tailings deposition driven by stakeholders’ environmental concerns. Case study #2 consisted of supporting ERA’s 2019 request for approval to change the tailings deposition method and final tailings level in Pit 3. INTERA’s model results for the permitted and proposed deposition methods showed minimal differences in post-closure Mg loading to creeks. The model results helped ERA obtain the needed approval for the tailings deposition method and water and tailings levels in Pit 3. For case study #3, INTERA modelled the comparative impacts from leaving the entire contaminant plume from the temporary tailings storage facility (TSF) in situ or excavating a portion of the contaminated material from beneath the TSF floor and placing it in Pit 3. The modelling results supported an approved TSF contaminated material application important for ERA to stay on schedule and minimise both closure costs and environmental impacts.

Global iron ore demand, sparked by ChinaÆs rapid industrialisation and emergence as the worldÆs newest steel market, has seen iron ore groups investing heavily in production capacity as well as infrastructure. The success of these new projects depends heavily on reliability, competitiveness and quality control in an increasingly demanding trading environment. Furthermore, the iron ore industry continues to improve its competitiveness in mining practices, technology innovation and management processes. The continued fine tuning of these sectors will be critical to the success of the industry in the years ahead, and this mining sector will continue to demand process improvements from their service suppliers to maintain competitiveness. Automation offers a real solution to these demands. A crucial quality control element in mining, beneficiation, stockpiling and shipping stages is ensuring representative samples of ore are taken along each step of the process. When these samples reach the laboratory it is imperative that the sample is representative of the entire stream and that no induced errors occur. Examples of automation start with mechanical primary and secondary samplers in the run-of-mine processes through to sample tower and laboratory crushers, dividers and collectors. Automation is widely used in many forms to provide reliable and repeatable samples for analysis whilst providing a safer working environment. Laboratory automation systems in use today vary from simple linear systems to sophisticated robotic cells. Sample automation in the iron ore industry has resulted in many benefits for both producers and their customers. The most significant benefits have come in the form of higher safety standards whilst reducing sample error, sample handling and sample contamination during collection. These benefits have been further augmented by reliability and repeatability of automating the final sample preparation and analysis stage. Today these benefits are reflected in reduced costs of sampling and improvement in both turnaround time and quality of results, whilst complying with Australian safety and ISO sampling standards.

The selection and application of an effect- ive firing system first require a clear under- standing of the initiating abilities of the com- ponents in such systems. The conditions under which charges can be prematurely initiated by a detonating cord downline must be appreciated. This is a principal consideration in the design of a successful downline/'Anodet'/primer assembly. The advantages and limitations of an electric and several non-electric initiating systems are explained. The factors which in- fluenced selection of the two most suitable systems for use at Isa Mine (viz. downline/ 'Anodet'/primer assemblies and the reinforced long-lead 'Anodet'-type delay system) are dis- cussed. Blasts are detailed in which each of these has been applied. The initiating design for a hypothetical 2 x 106 tonne blast using electric short delay detonators and multi-channel exploders is presented. In this design, charges in remote blastholes are activated after the detonation of earlier firing charges by protecting the firing lines with sandbags.

The Société Nationale Industriel et Minière (SNIM) is expanding its ore and concentrate production capacity in Mauritania, West Africa. This government-controlled mining company has been in production since 1963 and currently exports some 12 Mt/a.SNIM is presently doubling its magnetite concentrate production at the Guelb el Rhein mine. An existing processing line will have a second parallel production line of 4 Mt/a added. The mine is located some 600 km inland from the Atlantic coast in the heart of the Sahara Desert.The metallurgy of the ore is reasonably straightforward. It is a magnetite banded iron formation that is amenable to magnetic separation. While the existing plant uses semi-autogenous grinding and dry magnetic separation, the new processing line will use HPGRs, dry magnetic separation, and a wet milling and magnetic separation circuit for treating middlings.The process choices refl ect the scarcity of water in the region, the high cost of locally generated power and the operating experience and preferences of SNIM. Dust control in the desert environment has been a particular challenge.The metallurgical design aspects as well as the infl uence of the environmental and commercial aspects of the project are presented.

With the current focus in the mining industry on reducing costs, while simultaneously improving ore quality, infrared spectroscopy is a tool that can potentially assist companies to meet both challenges. Changes in the nature of infrared spectra are strongly influenced by changes in mineralogy, which is a key input variable for exploration (geology and orebody modelling and ore characterisation) and mining (pit design, mine scheduling and processing plant design/management).Infrared spectroscopic logging of drill holes has been embedded as a standard tool in BHP Billiton Iron Ore exploration, with a process set up to automatically deliver mineralogy and associated imagery to the end users (typically exploration geologists). The availability of consistent and automated mineralogy drill hole logs across a project is improving the output quality and reducing re-work.BHP Billiton Iron Ore is now looking into using the same infrared spectroscopic data for other applications, including improving predictions of geometallurgical and geotechnical parameters. Trials show that addition of infrared spectroscopic data to conventional data sets (element analysis and depth information) is significantly improving the accuracy of regression models to predict the lump-fine ratio.Further initiatives around infrared spectroscopic data in BHP Billiton Iron Ore include the installation of infrared spectroscopic sensors over conveyor belts, infrared spectroscopic mine face scanning and infrared spectroscopic blasthole logging. The ultimate vision is to have consistent, seamless mineralogical data from infrared spectroscopic sensing available throughout the mineral value chain (exploration/mining/processing). This seamless infrared spectroscopic data ‘bridge’ will allow the transfer of knowledge between the different sections of the value chain (exploration, mining and processing). For example, ore handle-ability could be predicted on exploration samples using regression models built from processing plant observations. In the opposite direction, information gathered about the buried stratigraphy by infrared spectroscopy utilised during exploration, could be used to predict the stratigraphy encountered during mining. "The website www.economicevaluation.com.au, which had its origins at the Project Evaluation Conference 2009, provides a free way for industry professionals to teach themselves economic evaluation. At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. Even if the model develops into a long, detailed and complex workbook, it should remain easy to follow and be intuitive. The website advocates freedom to devise any architecture that best suits the project under study, but promotes rigour through the following practices:four cash streams and graphsthree architectures – concept, prefeasibility and feasibilitysix principles.The modules in the Level 2 evaluation use conversational language to describe in detail the broad range of activities needed to properly understand and characterise a project/business.
