"Many open pit (OP) mines with considerable vertical extent are approaching the end of their life-of-mine; some of them are seeking the opportunity to make the transition from OP to underground (UG) mining. The decision on the best location for transition from OP to UG mining should be addressed at the strategic mine planning stage. Conservatively, the transition to UG mining is considered near or after the exhaustion of the reserve within the ultimate pit.However, if UG is evident and exclusively viable from the inception, defining the best location for the transition through a conservative approach may not be an optimal option to explore. This clearly establishes the need for a mathematical model that aims to maximise the project value and considers OP and UG mining with crown pillar (CP) requirement simultaneously. Underground mine layout varies from one UG mining method to the other, and consequently the variation in the location of transition is eminent. Thus, focus on the selection of UG mining method must be a part of this analysisThis paper presents an implementation of an integer programming (IP) based mathematical model that evaluates the changes in mining layout and the project value under possible variation in the transition point from OP to UG mining for stoping and block caving methods. An IP problem is a mathematical optimisation or feasibility method in which some or all of the variables are restricted to be integers. The outcome of the implementation reflects that mining strategies with OP transition to stoping and block caving methods generated higher values than OP-only mining strategy. The case study not only demonstrates the difference in mining layout for both stoping method and block caving method, but also reflects that a joint consideration of OP mining, UG mining and CP placement helps to achieve maximum project value and resource utilisation.Citation:Darbritz, J, 2016. HoistEM is a helicopter-towed time domain electromagnetic system. This paper presents details of the towed array structure (the Hoist) as well as a description of the instrumentation. A comparison between HoistEM and ground TDEM (from which HoistEM was derived) is given. Over 50 000 line kilometres of HoistEM have been completed to date and datasets for structural mapping, nickel, base metals, manganese, ground water and bathymetry are presented and discussed.

The Bendigo Goldfield is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is one of a number of quartz-reef fields that make up the greater Central Victorian Goldfield. At Bendigo gold particles are characterised by their very coarse nature, ranging from below 100 to over 10 000 ¦m in size. Some 60 per cent of the gold occurs in particles greater than 1000 ¦m in size. This characteristic ensures that the mineralisation is very challenging to both sample and evaluate. Diamond drilling provides a measure of geological structure, but is a poor measure of in situ grade, understating it by up to 75 per cent. Drilling combined with on-reef development, bulk sampling and geological interpretation has been used to define Indicated Mineral Resources. For grade control, a balance had to be sought between sample representivity, cost, turn around time and practicality. Sampling of extreme nugget effect deposits generally requires the use of bulk sampling in order to be representative. However, the cost and turn around time is significant. As a result, a 50 kg micro-bulk sampling system has been introduced that attempts to overcome these problems by providing a fast, practical method that can discriminate between ore and waste. As the mine passes into production, grade control will increasingly become dependent upon geological data collection and interpretation.

Distillation of the large and growing greenhouse literature indicates that: ò Global warming has occurred over the past century or more; ò Build-up of CO2 (and lesser greenhouse gases) in the atmosphere is a fact; ò This build-up is likely to cause further global warming. It does not appear possible to conclude that the observed C02 build up and observed global warming are linked; nor is it yet possible to forecast global or regional climate variation with conviction. The dominant greenhouse gas is C02 with about half the warming potential of those gases emitted by man's activities; and about 80% of anthropogenic C02 emissions are from the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil-fuel C02 emissions arg divided about equally between the developed countries of OECD and the rest of the world. However C02 output growth over the past decade was about 4% for OECD and some 40% elsewhere. Population growth and pressure for better living standards will ensure continued higher growth outside OECD. Uncertainty about the impact of increasing C02 emissions on climate, and the long lead-times involved in limiting the increase in atmospheric C02 concentrations, are good reasons for taking action now. Australia accounts for about 275 million tonnes a year or just over 1% of the CO2 emitted from the world's consumption of fossil fuels, and the fight to control global emissions will be won or lost elsewhere. Australia's participation will be by wise conselt and by example. In view of the uncertainties involved, it appears premature to take actions that might place an additional financial burden on our hard-pressed country. However, much can be done now that makes good economic sense and has the added benefit of limiting the growth in Australia's CO2 emissions. Natural gas emits less C02 per unit of energy when burned than either coal or oil. Furthermore, new gas-fired power stations utilise energy at considerably higher efficiency than is the case today with coal or oil. Because of much lower capital costs, there is a compelling economic case for permitting natural gas to compete freely with coal in the Australian power generation market.

The Abra mineralized body is regarded as a significant new style of mineralization for its environment. It is a blind polymetallic deposit, located in the Bangemall Basin of Western Australia. It was discovered by Geopeko in 1981 by diamond drilling a coincident magnetic gravity target, which revealed a large low grade epithermal Fe-Ba-Pb-Ag-Cu-(AuW) deposit, hosted by chemogenic and clastic sedimentary rocks, overlain by 200-500 m of clastic sedimentary rocks, of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralization occurs as an upper stratabound phase, and a lower vein "stringer" style phase within a pervasive chlorite alteration envelope.

"Basin Minerals Limited commenced exploring for conventional strandline hosted mineral sands (rutile, ilmenite and zircon) deposits in the Murray Basin in April 1997. This has resulted in the discovery of a major mineral sands field in the Douglas Project area, located southwest of Horsham in the Wimmera Region of Western Victoria. After the successful completion of a pre-feasibility study on these deposits in September 2000, the Douglas Project has advanced to bankable final feasibility study. This study should be completed by mid-2002 to allow a decision to commence production in 2003 at an expected rate of in excess of 500 000 tonnes of combined mineral sands products per annum. The field comprises several mineralised strandlines. The main ones of economic interest are from west to east, the four strandlines, Acapulco, Bondi, Bondi East and Echo. These strandlines at August, 2000 contain total Inferred Resources of 443 million tonnes at 4.7 per cent HM at a one per cent HM cut-off; ie 20.8 million tonnes of heavy mineral concentrate which in turn contains 11.3 million tonnes of ilmenite and leucoxene, 1.3 million tonnes of rutile and 1.6 million tonnes of zircon. The heavy mineral concentrate is coarse-grained with mean diameter grain size of the strandline deposits ranging from 130 to 160 microns in size. Major controls on the formation of mineral sands deposits in the Murray Basin are discussed with reference to the main mineral sand bearing, strand plain domains; the Central Strand Plain, the New South Wales Strand Plain and the West Wimmera Strand Plain. The Douglas Project deposits on the West Wimmera Strand Plain domain are characterised by wide zones of mineralisation with high-grade cores (>10 per cent HM), low stripping ratios, and a valuable economic heavy mineral suite comprising 60 to 80 per cent of heavy mineral concentrate. Constituent mineralogy of the heavy mineral concentrate of the overall deposits is; ilmenite (40 to 58 per cent), leucoxene (five to seven per cent), rutile (four to ten per cent) and zircon (four to 14 per cent). The Douglas Project Area appears to be endowed with significantly enhanced levels of heavy minerals compared to other areas of the Murray Basin due to its unique palaeo-geographical position. Long shore drift to the south of the basin has caused large quantities of heavy mineral to be trapped against the palaeo-cliffs and headlands of a rugged palaeo-coastline which includes in a major embayment, the Grampian Mountains, the Black Range and the Glenelg Complex. To the east, major faulting and uplift has brought the fine-grained WIM offshore deposits close to the surface and has resulted in erosional stripping of mineralised strandline deposits. This mineralisation has been recycled and reconcentrated within the younger strandlines to the west within the adjacent Douglas Project Area. These strandlines are thought to be younger than other mineralised strandlines discovered to-date in the Murray Basin. The Project Area strandlines are described; ie their morphology, geology and patterns of mineral distribution. The mineralogy of each of the strandlines is distinctive and variations are noted along strike and section."

Cyanide has been used for over a century worldwide for gold extraction. However, the presence of several metals and metalloids in ore requires greater amount of cyanide for an efficient gold recovery due to their solubilisation in conjunction with gold. The extraction residues are discharged into tailing storage facilities (TSFs) and may cause bird mortality if there is exposure to cyanide-bearing wastewater exceeding the toxic threshold. The toxicity arises from free cyanide released from weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide complexes. The International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC) has deemed 50 mg/L of WAD cyanide released into TSFs to be safe for wildlife protection. However, this concentration is based on observations of an apparent lack of toxicity rather than a toxicological approach. The National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) identified in 2010 that there is a lack of toxicity data to properly assess the environmental significance of cyanide levels at gold mines. Lack of knowledge for the toxicity of free cyanide and metal cyanide complexes to wildlife led to consider alternative direct assessment techniques for designating safe levels. Whilst toxicity may be assessed by using young chickens with animal ethics approval, the traditional bioassay approach to assess cyanide toxicity is impractical for gold mine TSFs. Bioassays using algal species such as Euglena gracilis, a unicellular alga, are widely used for ecotoxicological studies. A unique feature is that the Euglena gracilis Z cell has plant-like while SMZ cell has animal-like characteristics. Successful evaluation and exploitation of resources and reserves relies on the collection of high quality sample data. The quality of the sample data must be maintained through the application of a robust quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) program, including documentation of sampling procedures, training of sampling personnel and the regular monitoring of control samples. However, the application of QAQC programs in the minerals industry is often poor and the purpose misunderstood. It is all too common to have good quality control data collected, but no analysis work carried out until after drilling is completed. In a lengthy drill program, this can lead to problems not being discovered and corrected as they happen. Moreover, rectifying problems afterwards will be costly in terms of time and money, if not impossible. The consequences of poor quality sample data are many and include such effects as over- or underestimation of block grades, misclassification of ore and waste, and lower confidence in the resource/reserve models. The purpose of this paper is to highlight, using case studies, the importance of good QAQC practices to monitor the quality of sampling and laboratory sample preparation and analysis.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 42 km northwest of the township of Katherine within the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated in the southeastern portion of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The Batman gold deposit, the largest of several deposits at Mt Todd, hosts an identified mineral resource of 92.9 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t) as at 31 December 1993. Host rocks at Batman are assigned to the Early Proterozoic Burrell Creek Formation, comprising greywacke and siltstone interbedded with shale. Gold mineralisation is associated with a very broad zone of sheeted and stockwork quartz-sulphide veins that occupy a corridor of intense brittle fracture and faulting. A conceptual model of formation involves the dilation of joints and micro-faults within overlying sediments during sinistral movement along a basement shear zone. Synchronous granite intrusion generated convective circulation of crustal fluids through the sedimentary pile resulting in the formation of auriferous quartz veins within favourable structures. The Batman zone of mineralisation is not directly related to fold structures which typify several other major gold deposits within the Pine Creek Geosyncline.

Twenty-seven observation test pits were excavated at four different spoils dumps at three collieries in the Witbank Coalfield. The holes were dug into the upper three metres of the spoils to ascertain if any weathering profiles, variation with age or influence of topsoil covering could be gauged. Samples from these holes were also subjected to laboratory testing (ABA, humidity cells and mineralogy on several selected samples). The test pits showed that there was a good correlation between in situ paste pH-values and ABA results for samples taken from the pits. At all the collieries, no correlation between age of spoils and in situ acidity could conclusively be drawn. The depth of soil cover also appears to be a minor consideration in determining the eventual acidity of the spoil. In the pits where acidity was found, the weathering was evident when contrasted to areas still buffered. It is unclear if the weathering leads to the acidity or vice versa, as the soil covering appeared to be similar. The spoils proved to be extremely variable with regard to particle size and material on a micro and macro scale. Evidence from most of the holes suggested that there was enough water contained in the fine material in the spoils to support the initiation of acid generation. Conclusions from this investigation are that the mineralogy of the spoils is the most important factor in determining the eventual occurrence of acidic hotspots, and that prior characterisation and selective handling will provide the best management practice for these spoils.

The Nelson province was chosen as the prime area for rhenium sampling, based on its mineral associations. Sample preparation involved benefication by grinding and flotation A modification of published procedures for rhenium analysis was developed and the results compared with those obtained for molybdenum on the same samples using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results of the analysis for both metals is discussed and the relationships between rhenium and the molybdenum mineralisa- tion of this region is commented on. A metal- 1ngenic province is defined for molybdenum and r'.ienium and the tectonic setting for this is discussed. Some consideration has been given to rhenium possibilities in Fiordland and the Coromandel Range.

The stirred mill is regarded as one of the most efficient devices for micronising materials and has come to be actively used for preparation of fine particles. Recently, the demand for ultrafine particles was increased in many kinds of industries. In this paper, autogenous grinding to get submicron particles based on mutual friction feed material has been carried out using a stirred mill. The mill used was made of stainless steel and its volume was about 5.5 litres, and has 12 impeller blades. Sample used was limestone. In the present work, two operating parameters such as stirring speed and feed size of limestone were considered. The ground products were sieved in the size range from feed size to 325 mesh (45 lun), and from 45 to 0.17 pm the size distributions were measured by a laser diffraction and scattering method. The progress of grinding was evaluated by the increasing amount of submicron particles in products. As a result, the rotational speed of impeller with the minimum energy consumption to produce submicron particles was observed. It was found that the autogenous grinding with a stirred mill is an effective method for producing submicronized limestone.

This paper describes the new iron and steelmaking process recently commissioned at NZ Steel. Ironsand mined and concentrated at Waikato North head is slurry pumped 18 km to the company's Glenbrook works. Ironmaking includes the direct reduction process pioneered at Glenbrook in the 1970s and a new continuous electric melter. The molten, high carbon pig iron produced is then fed to a vanadium recovery unit and on to the KOBM oxygen steelmaking vessel. Steel is cast into billets or slabs. The new plant, which is the first stage of a fully integrated works at Glenbrook, raises New Zealand Steel's production capacity from 150 000 t/y to 750 000 t/y.

Sequencing of large underground firings is a critical aspect of blast performance. Using theory developed in open cut operations, where blast results are easier to quantify, a new technique for sequencing underground mass blasts has been developed. The basis for the technique is to identify timing regimes to control fragmentation and relief then apply non-electrics to fit these criteria. The use of computer software to graphically interpret delay statistics enables the evaluation of designs in a realistic manner.

Single pellets of mixed lead-zinc concentrate containing up to 20 % lead were roasted in the temperature range of 800-1100¦C. Variables studied included pellet size (from 9-8 to 3-2 mm diameter), gas flowrate past the pellet (from 0.05 to 5 ms t), composition of the atmosphere and the effect of additives such as zinc oxide and silica. After defined periods of time, the pellets were removed from the furnace, quenched and submitted for chemical, XRD, SEM and microprobe analysis. The oxidation of the zinc sulphide followed a shrinking core model. Temperature measurements showed that very high pellet temperatures were experienced at the start of an experiment but after 5-10 minutes these approached a constant temperature. The lead loss from the pellets was then constant with time. Thermodynamics predicted the presence of two bands of lead material in the reacted layer of the pellet. These were found in practice. The lead loss from the pellet occurred from the outer oxysulphate layer via the vaporization of lead oxide polymers. The vapour pressure of PbO, and the loss of lead, was dependent on temperature and bulk gas concentrations of SO2 and 02. At 1100¦C the addition of silica greatly reduced the loss of lead from the pellet. Physical factors such as pellet diameter and gas flowrate past the pellet affected the particle dynamics. These results were found to vary in accordance with the predictions of the Froessling equation.

In the last 15 years, it has become increasingly popular to win gold and silver from carbon strip solutions with electrolytic æsludgeÆ cells. The precious metal sludges produced in the cells are washed to the cell bottom and pumped into filters. Most new operations are specifying sludging cells, and many older operations are being retrofitted with up-to-date electrolytic sludge cells and filters. The new sludging cells are generally more energy efficient than older cells, but more importantly, the cell operations to remove product are much less labour intensive, cleaner, and the operator need not have physical contact with the electrolytically produced metal. A case study of a major North American gold producer (50 000 kg/yr) that removed old style stainless steel wool cathode cells and installed new sludging cells and sludge filters is presented. The effect of various impurities is discussed.

Technological innovations and emerging analytical capabilities are transforming the way drill samples are analysed, with real-time mineralogical analysis made possible. In addition, new business/technical requirements are challenging long standing processes to incorporate more sources of information during planning in order to improve compliance to plan during mining and processing. Unfortunately, the new sources of information that are added do not always have adequate protocols in place to ensure quality data is collected.Spectral data covering the visible – near – short wave – midwave – longwave range are routinely collected by the Geoscience and Exploration department at BHP Billiton Iron Ore for accurate mineralogical identification. These data are used for geological interpretations (logging and modelling) and prediction of physical variables (metallurgical and geotechnical properties).This paper introduces how sampling and quality assurance / quality control concepts have been applied in the spectral data process. The procedure used for Truck Maintenance is described systematically in this paper. Emphasis is given to manpower required, work facilities, daily maintenance and oil sampling procedure. Scheduled Preventative Maintenance Service, Electrical Service, Component Change, Truck Overhaul and Outside Contractors are also discussed. The system used, achieves the required results with an average haul truck availability in 1981 of 87.9 per cent. INTRODUCTION Situated on the Island of Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea, the Bougainville Copper mine nestles in a valley near the crest of the Crown Prince Range, between 600 m and 980 m above sea level. The mine is serviced by two towns, Arawa - an open town on the Coast and Panguna at the Mine Site. Currently Bougainville Copper operates an open pit mine removing an average of 198 000 dry metric tonnes of material per day (115 000 tonnes ore and 83 000 tonnes of waste) with a fleet of electric shovels and 154 tonne electric haul trucks.

Several technical and economic factors have to be taken into consideration in developing an optimal mining method. This paper describes some of the important factors learnt during the evolution of the sublevel cave mining method at Trojan Nickel Mine, part of the Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) in Zimbabwe. Sublevel caving (SLC) has been successfully implemented at Trojan mine since its introduction in 1994. The method has evolved over the past six years into a system that has brought about improvements in efficiencies and productivity. Although the original design parameters used were sound and provided a solid foundation for the system, they needed to be optimised to get the best out of the mining method. Improvements and changes have been made in areas such as the drilling process, charging and blasting techniques, ring pattern design, development size and shape, and the draw control system. This has enabled the mine to develop an SLC operation that is efficient and innovative. Experience gained, together with the theory available has given us a much better understanding of the system. This knowledge will be used in the future to enhance the system further. Given the low grades of the BNC Mines, management recognises that only through technical excellence and efficient mining can the mines reduce mining costs and maintain profitability and competitiveness on the world market. In the Zimbabwe mining industry reaction to technological change, mechanisation and advancement have been relatively slow, due to isolation and economic constraints, compared to the rest of the world. Economic difficulties prevail, with high inflation levels, a poor exchange rate, lack of foreign currency and other associated problems. Despite these constraints, the bold steps taken have transformed Trojan mine into a more efficient and competitive operation, presenting itself as the leading mine in the BNC group. Appendices give data to illustrate the benefits obtained.

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is opening a new underground coal mine in the Paparoa Ranges north-east of Greymouth. To access the coal reserves, PRCL have had to build a 13 km access road through regrowth and virgin forest, and appointed McConnell Dowell Constructors Limited, with URS New Zealand Limited as their consulting engineers, to construct the final access link: a 2.3 km long, 5.5 m wide and 4.5 m high incline tunnel. This paper discusses the logistical issues of construction in an isolated pristine forest in mountain land and how they were addressed. It provides an overview of the 90 per cent complete tunnel and how challenging rock conditions have been mastered. It outlines briefly the remaining work which is construction of pit bottom workings where the mine infrastructure will be housed and construction of a 110 m deep, 4.0 m diameter, vertical ventilation shaft.
