Base metal skarns have provided most of South KoreaÆs Pb-Zn production since the end of the Korean War, with the bulk of production coming from the Yeonwha group of mines. Currently only the Kumho Zn-Pb mine remains in production, while magnetite skarns are mined as iron ore at the old Yomisan and Ulsan base metal deposits. Base metal skarns within Korea fall into two groups; those hosted in Cambro-Ordovician limestone sequences, situated mainly in sub-basins in the northeast of the peninsula and those hosted within carbonate volcaniclastics of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, in the southeast. Sulphide mineralisation is dominated by sphalerite, lesser galena, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, with subordinate chalcopyrite and molybdenite with Ag-Co credits. Skarns are composed of pyroxene-clinopyroxene-garnet-carbonate-quartz and magnetite, grading into silica-chlorite hornfels. Most of the significant deposits display both pipe-like and stratabound morphology. In the Hwanggang district, a zoned distribution of Ordovician carbonate hosted, polymetallic Mo-W and Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag base metal deposits is observed around the margin of a Cretaceous granite intrusion. Similar polymetallic zoning is recognised in the Sangdong district, where deposits include Sangdong (W), Abisan (Au-As) and Yomisan Northwest (Zn-Mo) and Yomisan Southeast (Zn-Cu-Co), hosted in Ordovician carbonates in proximity to Cretaceous quartz porphyry intrusives. The Taebaeksan district hosts the largest deposits at the Yeonwha group of mines. Although production ceased in 1993, significant resources remain, hosted in Ordovician limestone and dolomite that have been intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry dykes. Deposits in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin consist of bedding concordant, vertically stacked base metal skarn mineralisation at several stratigraphic horizons, connected by carbonate-base metal veins with a pipe-like geometry. Evidence such as massive sulphide layers and restricted proximal carbonates suggest mineralisation was initially partly syn-depositional, with both base metals and carbonate venting onto a lake floor, being reconstituted to skarns by later magmatic activity. Skarn mineralisation is universally closely associated with the Cretaceous Bulgugsa Series acid intrusive activity. A common intrusive-structural relationship is recognised at some deposits, with bedding plane and imbricate thrust faulting, introducing felsic intrusives as sills. These intrusions probably introduced the base metals, carbonate, boron, heat and silica, which metasomatically reconstituted the carbonate lithologies to form skarn assemblages. The Korean base metal skarn deposits are regarded as Zn-Pb chimney-manto skarns and display similarities to the Mexican manto type deposits.

Problems of the effect of the number of tuyeres and their parameters on the uni- formity of gas distribution are invest- igated with the use of the authors' devel- oped mathematical model of the movement of gases and materials in the blast furnace. It is shown that the improvement of uni- formity of gas distribution with an increase in the number of tuyeres has a damping character. An analysis of the errors of the specified assumptions of the hypothesis concerning the potentiality of the gas movement in the bed is carried out. It is established that the potential approach model gives good results with the determination of the discharge of gas and its stress field, but is not useful for the calculation of local velocities of gas in the raceway. The results of trials of calculation investigations of the dynamics of form- ation of the raceway and the voidageòfield in beds of burden materials are presented in the concluding part of the paper.

As the worldÆs population and global standard of living increase, the role of metals in the economy will not diminish in the 21st century, despite substitution and dematerialisation trends. Industrial Ecology is an emerging science that attempts to bring together physical, biological and social scientists and develop the tools for good management of the planet in the long run. In engineering terms, Industrial Ecology is defined as the reconfiguring of industrial activities with full knowledge of their environmental consequences. Production and use of materials must take into account the needs of both market and environment. Dispersive uses of metals will be phased out, as is being done with lead in gasoline, and post-use recovery of materials and energy will increase. This will result in an advantage for metallurgical processes that can use as feed materials concentrates as well as metal scrap and waste streams, such as bath smelting processes and slag resistance electric furnaces. The paper also discusses how metal extraction technologies, developed in the 20th century to provide essential materials to humanity, can be applied for the benefit of both mankind and environment in the 21st century.

A major diamond mining operation in South Africa is faced with the unique problem of recovering usable water from the fine tailings stream. The kimberlite ore hoisted is washed prior to crushing in order to remove adhered fine clay particles. These particles form a colloidally stable suspension from which it has not been possible to recover clear recycle water. Research has been conducted on this problem for more than 20 years and it is only recently that a breakthrough has been achieved. This paper describes the work done to gain an understanding of the suspension stability and which subsequently led to the testing of a process at pilot-plant Scale.

Ulan Coal Mines Limited operates an underground and open cut mine near Mudgee in the Central West of NSW. The mines are part of a Joint Venture managed by Exxon Coal and Minerals Australia Limited (ECMAL). Currently all the mines output of over five million tonnes per annum is sold into the export market predominantly as a steaming product.

Hydraulic fill using surface sand deposits or cycloned tailings has been used in underground mining for at least fifty years. Current technology requires a permeable fill and high cement additions for strong fill. Shortages in quantities of acceptable fill with finely ground ore may require rockfill or aggregate to be introduced as a supplement and these usually incur additional distribution costs. Alternative approaches to the problem are now being developed whereby the pulp density of the fill is raised so that it is delivered either as a dense slurry or as a paste. These regimes of fill behaviour are defined together with the plant and pumping techniques required to prepare and deliver the materials. Test techniques to define the different regimes of behaviour are identified and the variation in material properties for fills with varying pulp densities are outlined. The results indicate that high pulp density fills are stronger and have less permeability restrictions than conventional fills and that aggregate can be carried with the pulp. Thus the disadvantage of finer materials can be turned into an economic advantage. Criteria are developed for defining the type of operation suited to this Technology.

This presentation is to outline the current practice of mechanised stoping a one-metre wide, gold bearing ore body to optimise fragmentation, minimise dilution and reduce stoping costs.Coolgardie underground operations have historically been mined using traditional shrink stope methods, but in this recent economic environment (with falling gold prices and high costs of traditional methods) it was necessary to look for alternative methods in order to reduce costs and increase productivity.Although still in a learning and refinement phase, CGNL is satisfied that it is feasible, practical and more economic to use mechanised long up-hole stope and long-hole rising methods to significantly reduce the mining cost, reduce dilution, increase safety and increase productivity three-fold compared to traditional airleg methods used throughout the Fasten Goldfields.

Classification devices provide a link between comminution and flotation. Basically, it determines which particles are diverted back for additional grinding and which ones pass to downstream flotation. Therefore, the classifiers play an important role in the performance of a mineral processing circuit. Hydrocyclones are the most common classifiers used in wet grinding, despite being associated with poor classification efficiency. Hydrocyclones are widely used due to advantages related to low maintenance as well as reduced capital and operating cost. Other classifiers, such as fine screens, have much better classification efficiency compared to hydrocyclones. The major challenge of using screens in an operation, however, is their large footprint and increased maintenance requirements relative to hydrocyclones. Some researchers have demonstrated that switching from hydrocyclones to screens, as the classifier device in a ball milling circuit, resulted in a 20 per cent increase in plant throughput and significant improvements in coarse particle recovery, resulting in a 6 per cent increase in overall flotation recovery. However, it is known that these benefits of improved classification are very much ore specific, ie depending on the ore response. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the benefits of improved classification in pilot scale testing before the plant could consider the potential classifier upgrade. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale grinding tests where the ore sample was processed using different classifiers: a traditional hydrocyclone and hybrid classification involving the use of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone followed by a screen. The size specific energy and circulating load were used to compare the performance of the grinding circuit. The grinding product was subject to mineral liberation analysis and the impact of classification efficiency on the mineral liberation is discussed in the paper.

Given the ever increasing quantity of construction and demolition waste (C&DW), one of the most challenging issues presently facing policymakers and public administrators in Italy concerns how to organise and manage collection and recycling and to understand whether and to what extent recycled aggregate can complement natural building aggregates in a sustainable supply mix (SSM). The paper presents the results of a research aimed at analysing energy and environmental implications of the C&DW recycling chain in the administrative territory of Provincia di Torino in northern Italy. In respect of a population of about 2.25 million inhabitants, the annual production of C&DW in the area under study is 1.8 Mt. A combined geographical information system (GIS) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model was developed, paying attention to the geographical location, land use, transportation network and avoided landfill: crucial issues for sustainable planning and management. Around 90 recycling plants were classified according to the size, typology (stationary, semi-mobile and mobile) and physical- mechanical characteristics of the recycled aggregate. Under different assumptions relevant to the delivery distance, and considering the typology and grade of recycled aggregate, as well as local availability of natural aggregates, it was possible to evaluate the geographical coverage of aggregates demand and to use LCA in order to identify and quantify energy and environmental indicators.

The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the FrothSim flotation simulator and to demonstrate its ability to predict the performance of real flotation circuits. Example simulations are presented in which the feed rate to the circuit is varied, followed by simulations in which a cleaner section and recycle loop are added to the rougher bank.The simulator is able to predict both the recovery and the grade produced by the cells at all locations in a circuit and the simulator is shown to produce plausible grade recovery curves. It also demonstrated that the performance of banks of cells improve as the feed rate to the bank increased (improved grade for a given recovery), but that more cells are required to give the same overall recovery.

The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

Over the past decade, the mining industry has come to recognise the importance of water both to itself and to others. Water accounting is a formalisation of this importance that quantifies and communicates how water is used by individual sites and the industry as a whole. While there are a number of different accounting frameworks that could be used within the industry, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs (MCA) water accounting framework (WAF) is an industry-led approach that provides a consistent representation of mine site water interactions regardless of their operational, social or environmental context that allows for valid comparisons between sites and companies.The WAF contains definitions of off-site water sources and destinations and on-site water use, a methodology for applying the definitions, and a set of metrics to measure site performance. The WAF is comprised of two models: the input-output model, which represents the interactions between sites and their surrounding community, and the operational model, which represents on-site water interactions.Members of the MCA have recently adopted the WAFÆs input-output model to report on their external water interactions in their Australian operations, with some adopting it on a global basis. To support this adoption, there is a need for companies to better understand how to implement the WAF in their own operations. Developing a water account is non-trivial, particularly for sites unfamiliar with the WAF or for sites with the need to represent unusual features. The EnvIRONment process has been developed to treat steel works dust and organic wastes simultaneously. A pelletised feed is fed into a special DC electric furnace, the pellets becoming immersed in a molten slag above a carbon saturated bath. The iron oxide in the pellets is reduced and carburised whilst the organics are broken down to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and water vapour. Volatile metals are vapourised and collected in the baghouse. Over two years of trials in a 100 kg DC electric are furnace has brought the process to the stage where it is ready for commercialisation.

Thick clay tills below potash mine tailings and brine ponds are important natural barriers protecting fresh water aquifers in Saskatchewan. Centrifuge modelling was applied to assess geochemical processes and impacts of dilute brine (0.1 M NaCl) migration through clay till core samples obtained from non saline, unoxidised clay till at a mine site. At accelerated gravity of 876 + g, during each day of centrifuge modelling, flow driven through a 52 mm length core simulated transport through a 45 m thick clay over ~2100 years. Hydraulic conductivity, monitored continuously before and during brine permeation, was low and relatively constant (8.5 + 10-12 m/s), confirming that confining stresses prevent permeability increase. Core density and porosity measurements confirmed that reactive transport occurred under realistic in situ conditions. Breakthrough (defined by C/C0 = 0.5) of non-reactive Cl- occurred at 25 days. The slight delay for Na+ breakthrough, associated with small increases in Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the effluent were attributed to ion exchange, but carbonate reactions were relatively unimportant. Cation exchange analysis of core samples was inconclusive without corrections for porewater Na+ and carbonate dissolution. Geochemical processes that were observed during centrifuge modelling were successfully simulated using the 1D geochemical transport code PHREEQC. Solute transport was dominated by diffusion with limited ion exchange to delay Na+ migration. Brine would not break through a 45 m thick clay for tens of thousands of years. Based on these findings, the thick clay till at this site, if laterally extensive and undisturbed by drilling activity, is likely to act as an effective natural barrier to vertical brine migration over the long term.

The operation of quarries for the production of crushed stone and aggregates, depends heavily on rock blasting efficiency, which usually represents a major share of total production costs. After investigating the causes of this situation, a series of technical aspects have been detected, and they are described for the purpose of contributing to the minimization of costs, which also reduces the effects of blasting on the environment. Utilization of empirical design methods, of inadequate explosive types, and of erroneous drilling pauems with respect to rock properties, are the main factors to be corrected, as a consequence of poor engineering criteria, with scarce use of computational methods and field instrumentation. Several concepts of blasting optimization are pointed out, and their application to industrial operations in a Portuguese limestone quarry indicated clear trends for the reduction of production costs, as well as some of the deleterious consequences of blasting on the environment.

Process mineralogy provides the mineralogical information required by geometallurgists to address the inherent variation of geological data. The successful beneficiation of ores mostly depends on the ability of mineral processing to be efficiently adapted to the ore characteristics, liberation being one of the most relevant mineralogical parameters. The liberation characteristics of ores are intimately related to mineral texture. Therefore, the characterisation of liberation necessarily requires the identification and quantification of those textural features with a major bearing on mineral liberation. From this point of view, grain size, bonding between mineral grains and intergrowth types are considered the most influential textural attributes. While the quantification of grain size is a usual output of automated current technologies, information about grain boundaries and intergrowth types is usually descriptive and difficult to quantify to be included in the geometallurgical model.Aiming at the systematic and quantitative analysis of the intergrowth type within mineral particles, a new methodology based on digital image analysis has been developed. In this work, the ability of this methodology to achieve a more complete characterisation of liberation is explored by the analysis of chalcopyrite in the rougher concentrate of the Kansanshi copper-gold mine (Zambia). Results obtained show that the method provides valuable textural information to achieve a better understanding of mineral behaviour during concentration processes. The potential of this method is enhanced by the fact that it provides data unavailable using current technologies. Customer requirements concerning the final products of iron mines are extremely stringent. Because of this, there is an ever-increasing need for mine operators to monitor and strictly control the quality of their product. This quality, as measured by the stockpile grade variability, is the result of a very complex process, where natural characteristics (the orebody and its geology) are transformed through the mining technique (open pit, shovel and truck fleet, blending into stockpile). The only way to reproduce and hence to control the variability of such a system, which is composed of several interactive sub-processes, is by simulation. A complete simulation of a Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd (HI) ore deposit has been undertaken to forecast the impact and cost of various mining methods, mining schedules and product stockpile sizes on variability of chemical and physical characteristics of the products. The mining simulation was made on a conditionally simulated orebody. On a range of criteria, the simulation was considered to fulfil the objectives set and was a valuable aid to analysis of product grade variability, operating and capital costs, selection of equipment, mine scheduling and setting of product grade targets.

For many hard rock mines with near surface deposits, the surface crown pillars form the first line of protection for the immediate underground workings. Underground stopes are typically contained by crown pillar, which protects the level above, rib pillars, and a sill pillar through which the ore collection system is cut. This paper discusses the mining of these pillars, with particular emphasis on the overall stability of the mined out upper part of the mine areas. An area of interest is located in the Canadian Shield, where the mining has progressed below four thousand foot level in the ultramafic high grade sulphide type of orebody.

In South Africa, as in many other countries, the young engineering graduate is promoted quite soon to a management position where he uses less technical skills and more people-oriented skills. In the standard undergraduate curriculum for engineering, little attention is paid to the non-technical issues of the profession. An undergraduate course in management techniques cannot be a substitute for a MBA or Masters degree in engineering management, but can at least create an awareness of the practical problems facing the engineering manager. The aim of this paper is to provide an outline of such a course structure at the University of Stellenbosch. A survey is also presented on management training in the South African and Australian mineral industries. Feedback from students and graduates indicates that the fresh graduate does not fully appreciate the value of such a course until he/she achieves a position of responsibility after two or three years. Nevertheless, the management course appears to be successful in widening the perspectives of the engineer. As explained frequently in management journals, the technically oriented person (the engineer) has a convergent thought pattern, which could be in conflict with the more divergent thought pattern of the top, personnel or marketing manager. It becomes increasingly imperative for the young minerals engineer to be externally oriented instead of the traditional internal focus of engineering. The engineer should not only be aware of environmental issues in the technical design and operation of plants, but should also understand the inter-relationship between public relations, political pressures and environmental perceptions vis-d-vis technical facts.
