THE filter-press, which has done so much for the successful-treatment of the sulpho-telluride ores of Kalgoorlie, has a serious rival in the vacuum process, and this paper is written with a view to arousing more interest in the cheaper working of the press, it being doubtful whether its efficiency in extraction can be improved upon. Before proceeding with the actual working of the press, it may be as well to make brief mention of the character of the ore treated at the Associated Northern Blocks, where these notes were compiled. "The financial model is an integral component of any project evaluation based on mineral resources, ore reserves and (at least internally) exploration targets. Given the unity of purpose for preparing financial models for project evaluation purposes, the diversity of both format and content of the finalised models is surprising. Many models are prepared by staff or consultants who are comfortable with a particular format that may be used for other purposes, such as budget preparation or financial reporting. It is natural in these situations that the practitioner will take these models and adapt them to the purpose. The end result may or may not succeed in providing a clear, accurate and sufficiently detailed view of the project’s economic viability.When preparing a model, the practitioner should be cognisant of the interpretation and review, or audit, process. The auditor may be a consultant or employee of a bank, potential equity provider or of the project sponsor itself. Depending upon the scale of the project and the level of participation of the entity that the auditor represents, the financial model will be interrogated more or less rigorously. In any event, the end user will require the model to permit easy change of inputs and will wish to confirm that such change is appropriately and thoroughly transmitted throughout.Accordingly, there are some ‘dos and don’ts’ that can be readily applied in the creation of the financial model that will greatly assist the end user, not just in the change of inputs, but also in reviewing the model’s integrity. The reaction sequences involved in the formation of iron ore sinter phases were determined using in situ synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction. Experiments were carried out using a synthetic sinter mixture containing 77.36 per cent Fe2O314.08 per cent CaO, 3.56 per cent Si.O2 and 5.00 per cent Al2O3 corresponding to a basicity of ~4. The alumina content represents the upper level of alumina concentrations measured in phases formed in industrially produced plant sinter. Data were collected during heating of the sample to 1350°C under an atmosphere of 0.5 per cent O2 in N2, equivalent to an oxygen partial pressure of 5 × 10-3 atm. This temperature was sufficientto ensure melting. Data were also collected on cooling of the sample back to room temperature to examine recrystallisation of phases from the melt.Results showed the sequence of reactions initially involved the formation of calcium ferrite phases C2F and CF. These subsequently reacted with the silica and haematite leading to the solid state formation of SFCA and SFCA-1. SFCA and SFCA-1 were the last phases to form in the system and were both stable up to ~1260°C. Above ~1260°C, melting of the SFCA phases and reduction of the remaining haematite occurred producing the assemblage magnetite + melt.During cooling, both SFCA phase types recrystallised from the melt initially coexisting with magnetite until secondary haematite formed. This is the fi rst study to demonstrate that both SFCA and SFCA-1 are precipitated from the melt during cooling of iron ore sinter. Future work will extend the range of compositions studied to examine the effect of basicity and alumina concentration on the phase assemblages as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure.

Buoyant levels of world economic growth and recovery in intensity of metals usage suggest that demand for minerals will remain relatively strong into the 1990's. Supply constraints, low stock to use ratios, financial and political factors imply lower elasticities of supply for minerals in the future. The outlook for minerals and metals prices from a pro-ducers viewpoint is, accordingly, promising.The recent recovery in world minerals prices, following strong growth in the world economy over the last few years, makes it appropriate to consider the structural forces at work in the formation of world demand and supply of minerals. This paper will review past trends and consider some of the main economic issues facing the mining industry in the 1990's.

In July 1997 Macraes Mining Company Limited deferred a 9 Mtpa expansion of the Macraes Gold Project because of the uncertainty of the future gold price and its impact on equity markets.  Additionally delays in the resource consenting process led to further uncertainty.   It has subsequently announced that a study has been commissioned to recommend a staged approach to development of its New Zealand business. The best economic development path will be determined to maximise returns to shareholders.

Titanium has the potential to become the third wave of light metals used in high volume applications, following on from aluminium and magnesium. These light metals have functional attributes that can meet many of the goals needed for societyÆs transition to sustainable development. CSIRO has initiated a Light Metals Flagship to focus additional R&D efforts in support of the light metals industry. The vision of the Light Metal Flagship is for Australia to lead the Light Metals Age by reducing the costs and environmental impacts through innovative technologies for these metals. Life cycle principles will be used to identify novel technology pathways for metal production and product manufacture that are more energy efficient, less capital intensive and incorporating eco-efficient material flow chains.Under the auspices of the Light Metal Flagship, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of titanium metal production was carried out with mineral sands mining of ilmenite as the starting point. Upgrading of the ilmenite to synthetic rutile by the Becher process and titanium metal production by the conventional Kroll process were the processing routes considered. Two alternative processes for titanium metal production, the FFC Cambridge process involving direct electrochemical deoxygenation of titanium dioxide, and a plasma process for producing titanium powder from titanium tetrachloride were also examined using LCA methodology and compared to the Kroll process. The environmental impacts included in the LCA were greenhouse gas emissions (Global Warming Potential, GWP) and acid rain gas emissions (Acidification Potential, AP). The Gross Energy Requirement (GER) of each process was also determined.These results for titanium, along with those from previous LCA studies by CSIRO on aluminium, magnesium, steel and stainless steel production, were used to show that despite the relatively large amounts of primary energy required for the production of these light metals, their special properties (eg corrosion resistance, strength and light weight) mean that these metals offer potential GER and GWP reductions compared to other competing materials in a number of applications, when viewed on a life cycle basis. Two applications considered in the paper are the lightweighting of motor vehicles and chemical plant equipment manufacture.

Mineral liberation is critical to maximise the grade and recovery of nickel, however this objective is challenged considerably by the poor flotation kinetics, especially that of ultrafine particles (Kelebek and Tukel, 2018; Multani and Waters, 2019). High recoveries demand long cell residence times and hence a large flotation capital expenditure (Wills and Finch, 2016). However, this leads to excessive entrainment of gangue minerals, thus negating efforts to depress its recovery. This study aimed to investigate new hydrodynamic approaches to improve nickel flotation, focusing primarily on unrecovered nickel from a Western Australian tailings stream. Mechanical cell flotation experiments were conducted to understand the flotation kinetics, covering different size ranges. A novel Reflux Flotation Cell (RFC) was also used to improve the nickel recovery and reject the silicates. Future work aimed at applying the RFC to different size portions is also outlined.

Anglo American’s Los Bronces copper mine in Chile has been conducting detailed assessments investigating value adding options for their asset. The mine has conducted several detailed Mine-to- Mill and Grade Engineering studies to investigate increased throughput and head grade and to quantifying the impact of these approaches across the life of mine. CRC ORE has two key technologies namely Grade Engineering and the Integrated Extraction Simulator. These two technology suites have been combined to understand the technological landscape and associated value drivers suitable for application at Los Bronces. Detailed ore characterisation test work was conducted to:  measure and spatially model the propensity of ores to naturally deport and  develop customised blast models for Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering evaluation The outputs of this work were utilised to develop a block model populated with a range on new Grade Engineering and blasting parameters suitable for scenario analysis. To facilitate scenario analysis a high-fidelity value chain model of the Los Bronces operation from blasting to concentrate production was built in IES. IES was combined with sophisticated analytical tools such as Neural Networks to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model made it possible to simulate in IES all available blocks in the block model to predict throughput and grade changes for different strategic scenarios. The scenario analysis was run across 24 strategic combinations of Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering and comprised several million simulations. The scenarios investigated each technology independently and jointly to provide an attributed block model that can feed forward into technoeconomic modelling to determine optimal execution strategies for the mine. This paper presents the first published study combining Grade Engineering and IES to provide mass simulation capability to investigate strategic options for a mining asset.

In this paper, it is briefly introduced that China's Ordovician limestone confined-water menaces coal mining and Ordovician water is prevented and cured to secure the safety of coal mining. The theory of "Down-Three-Zones" is presented on the basis of research and practice in recent ten years. The concept of "Down-Three-Zones" of floor water-eruption is described clearly. Finally, the principle and method of applying the theory of "Down-Three-Zones" are discussed. 1. An Introduction of Damage: China is rich in coal resources. The conditions of coal field geology are quite complicated. There is an area of two million square kilometre of Karst limestone in nine million six thousand square kilometres of territory. The resources of underground water are rather plentiful, but this menaces coal exploration. Sixty percent of coal mines in China are damaged by limestone confined-water in different scales, particularly coal mines located the Carboniferous-Permian coal fields of the Ordovician limestone distribution area of Northern China. Because there is the 500-800 metre thickness of Ordovocian limestone and the well developed Karst containsl plentiful water, Karst water can have more than 100 Kg/cm pressure. Limestone aquifers have only distances of several metres or several decade metres to coal seam, Karst water can enter the aquituge and even the coal seam, large eruptions often occur. For example, a mine of 3 million ton production capacity had an eruption of 2053 cubic metres per minute. This is the largest confined-water eruption which has brought enormous economic damage and threatened the safe production of coal mining. Therefore, the prevention and cure of Ordovician water has immense advantage to the development of the coal industry. There are several decades experience in the prevention of Ordovician water-eruption in China. The prevention of Ordovician water-eruption has two kinds of plans. 1) dewatering and depression: it refers to dewatering of aquifers as roofs of seam and depression of aquifers as floors of seam in mining areas. 2) comprehensive prevention under the condition of having water pressure in aquiters. Due to enormous water, electricity, equipment and lots of other factors, the former isn't used extensively, the latter tits to China's actual conditions and is used widely. For the mineral industry, sustainability seems to mean socially positive and ecologically neutral mineral extraction. Mines are financed and developed in response to demand for their products. The purpose of my paper is to indicate the potential dimension of demand. As part of an unrelated study which I undertook ten years ago, it became apparent that there is a persistent relationship within communities between infant mortality and mineral use; greater mineral use corresponds to a lower rate of infant mortality. This comes as no surprise; sufficient potable water, a reliable supply of food, hygienic waste disposal, hot water and refrigeration all improve the chances of survival of the more vulnerable members of any community. The predictable provision of these facilities requires the application of minerals. This relationship is supported by a table (Appendix 1) included in the UNICEF publication, æThe State of the WorldÆs Children 2001Æ. This table lists regional infant mortality rate (IMR) statistics from around the world, including a listing for æindustrialised countriesÆ. Such countries experience an IMR lower by an order of magnitude than any other region. æIndustrialisedÆ inevitably involves the use of metallic and energy minerals. The principal use of copper is in the generation and distribution of power; it is fundamental to any industrialisation. IMR is a valuable connection because it quantifies caring for the young, a vital strategic driver of human behaviour independent of time, place, fashion or economic circumstances. I have tabulated the population, IMR and the copper demand per head of population for countries containing over 99 per cent of the population of the world in the years 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1989, and 1999. These countries have been consolidated into four groups, Very High, High, Medium and Low rates of infant mortality (UNICEF has used this terminology; the Low group includes all the æindustrialised countriesÆ). The purpose of this consolidation was to reduce the volume of work, to dampen out the impact of regional wars and business cycles, and to dampen out the variable quality of information. Based on the pattern of the copper demand, population and IMR over the last 50 years, I have projected the likely copper demand in 50 years time. A dominant feature of my tabulation is the increase per decade in copper use per head and a corresponding reduction of the IMR. The word æuseÆ is preferred to æconsumptionÆ because it is estimated that over 80 per cent of all the copper ever mined is still in circulation There are two major influences at work; one is the absolute increase in population (UN estimates for 2050 are updated periodically) and the second is the movement of countries into a higher pattern of use and lower IMR. For example the Medium group in 1989 had an infant mortality rate approximating that of the Low group in 1960. With the population of the Medium group (which includes Russia and China) forecast to reach 2.6 billion in 2050, the world copper demand in that year will be significantly greater than the present figure. Nevertheless it will not be as great relatively as the increase of over 300 per cent in the last 50 years.

Drilling and shooting techniques at Moura open-cut have evolved over a period of 16 years and are the result of hard earned experience combined with established practices and consul- tation with professional services. The wide range of overburden types encoun- ted in the field requires varying methods to achieve the best results at all times. Safe working conditions for the employees and protection of mining equipment is of para- mount importance and close liaison is maintain- ed with the Department of Mines Queensland to keep abreast with changing legislation. Drill patterns, charging profiles, types of explosives and ultimate results are des- cribed in detail along with a resume of equip- ment. Costs of drilling, labour and explosives are also analysed with a total of approximately 20c per cubic metre of shot ground. Future developments and improvements to facilities are also outlined.

The current practice of magnetite ore agglomeration involves high temperature oxidation roasting (typically at 1200–1350°C) of magnetite to hematite phase in order to improve the strength and reducibility of pellets. The requirement to pre-oxidise the magnetite before introduction to an ironmaking plant increases the CO2 emissions generated during the ironmaking process. In our previous papers, a novel, alternative agglomeration route for magnetite ores was presented where magnetite was converted to a reducible CaFe3O5 (CWF) phase through the addition of lime to produce a Lime-Magnetite Pellet (LMP) feedstock that can be directly charged to ironmaking units. The LMP process eliminates the magnetite oxidation stage, thereby reducing the CO2 emission during ironmaking. The concept was tested by thermodynamic calculations, high temperature experiments and scaled-down pilot scale test work. In this paper, larger scale synthesis of halfstoichiometric LMPs (1 mole of Fe3O4 and ½ mole of CaCO3) were prepared using a balling drum, followed by overnight drying at 110°C and induration at 1050°C for two hours. The LMPs were analysed using X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope techniques for phase and microstructure characterisation. The LMPs were found to have 14–15 wt. per cent of CWF phase when indurated under a CO2/CO ratio of 8.5:1. Pilot scale testing of the LMPs was conducted following ISO standard test procedures. The test results indicated the LMP’s had a Reducibility Index (RI) of over 91 per cent, a Tumbler Index (TI) of 87 per cent and a Reduction Degradation Index (RDI) of 4.6 per cent. The results indicate LMPs may be useful as an alternative feedstock to ironmaking processes that would result in lower overall CO2 emissions.

"Decision-making in mining is a challenging task. Optimal decisions regarding shovel and truck allocations, aligned with the optimal short-term production schedules, are crucial in keeping the operations in line with the company’s long-term objectives. In this paper, we present two main modelling components as the means to achieve near-optimal operational plans: a mixed integer linear goal programming model to allocate trucks and shovels to mining faces over a shift-by-shift basis so that operating costs are minimised and resource utilisations are maximised through the planning horizon a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the behaviour of a truck-and-shovel haulage system in the presence of uncertainty within mining operations. The goals integrated into the mathematical model are to: maximise production minimise deviations from the target head grade minimise deviations in tonnage feed to the processing plants from the desired feed minimise operating cost.The mathematical model provides shovel assignments and the target productions as an input to the discrete event simulation model while meeting the desired goals and constraints of the mining operation. We illustrate the applications of the discrete event simulation model by presenting a large-scale oil sands case study. Springvale Mine is an underground coal mine in the western coalfield of New South Wales which utilises retreat longwall mining technique. The mine encountered significant gateroad floor heave issues during retreat of LW415. Floor heave has subsequently impeded longwall advance as well as longwall bolt up and recovery to some extent during the extraction of the next five longwalls. Floor heave at Springvale Mine develops throughout the lifecycle of the mine roadways, and is most prevalent in longwall gateroads. Floor heave has been measured as early as 2 weeks after roadway development and continues to develop through the post-development phase, with a rapid increase in close proximity to the longwall face. This paper presents a case study of the evolution of understanding of floor heave behaviour at Springvale Mine based on geotechnical characterisation, an intensive convergence monitoring program (roof and floor movement) and spatial correlation of monitored locations with longwall face position. The analysis considers previously known factors contributing to floor heave including mining depth, geological and physical properties of the rock mass and mine design geometry. Investigation results indicate a strong correlation between floor heave magnitude and roof dilation magnitude, geophysically inferred faulting in underlying strata, areas of localised stress concentration and mine roadway dimensions. This paper also discusses the predictive model which was developed as a result of the study, which is now the basis of the floor heave removal program used to manage roadway convergence at the mine. The variation in chemical and isotopic composition of hydrocarbon gases generated from humic source rocks in the Cooper Basin, the orth West Shelf, the agoorin oil shale deposit. ollinsville and the southern Sydney Basin is reviewed, discussed and interpreted.The primary composition of gases generated in and released from such source rocks appears to be very largely controlled by the degree of dispersion of the organic material. For example in eoaly shales, where the degree of dispersion may be high, products as generated may escape into surrounding inorganic structures where further maturational reactions may proceed. On the other hand, when the organic materials occur in massive form, as in coal seams, the hydrocarbons generated tend to be retained within the coal. Further cracking to the stage of methane generation is usually required before release of hydrocarbon products is significant.Secondary factors of importance in determining seam gas composition in the Bowen (Collinsville) and southern Sydney Basins are the invasion of coal measures by carbon dioxide from external magmatic sources and/or the vertical diffusion and loss from the surface ofgases generated at depth.Isotopic measurements of gas composition have been particularly valuable in determining the origins and histories of the gases examined, in demonstrating when gases are of mixed origins and in the prediction of gas quality in exploration.

Ore-hosting breccias occur in a wide variety of environ-ments, shapes, compositions and characteristics, but generally present favorable loci for the deposition of ore mineralization in epithermal, porphyry copper-gold-molybdenum, massive sulfide, carbonate-hosted, sedimentary lead-zinc deposits and others.

The late 1960's and 1970's saw the initial development of the coal resources of the Bowen Basin of Queensland. The projects developed relied on large scale, open-cut operations using draglines for overburden removal and, in the majority of cases, project viability could be established based solely on those open-cut operations. Many of the mines developed in the 1980's have the same characteristics.Unlike these mines, the German Creek Mine has limited open-cut reserves at low overburden to coal ratios, and planning of the complex involved a large open-cut mine capable of developing early cash flow, with phased introduction of underground mining to replace open-cut capacity as the strip ratio increased.

The Hellyer deposit, hosted in the Cambrian Mt Read Volcanics, displays features typical of volcanogenic massive sulphide orebodies. These include a well developed stringer zone, metal zonation within the orebody, a polymict volcaniclastic sequence flanking the deposit and a hangingwall alteration plume in overlying basaltic pillow laves.Mapping and core logging is very detailed in order to extract as much data as possible from the deposit and its host rocks. A geological log suitable for direct computer input was adopted shortly after the deposit's discovery.

Improper use of auxiliary ven- tilation units during heading operations may often result in the appearance of hazardous methane accumulations. This is the case especially when roadways are ventilated by a combined system with a short sucking pipe at face end performing as the dedusting installation. Uniform air inflow to the face end facilitates sucking off the dust clouds and creates conditions favourable for formation of local methane accumulations. The highest methane concentration occurs in the cutting zone between the rock cut and the pipe inlet, under the roof and by, the sidewalls. Permanent monitoring of methane concentration at face end employs methane sensors. The most important are: one on the road- header's boom behind the cutting head, and one at the air outlet from the dedusting installation.

I am honoured and very pleased to have been given the opportunity this evening to say a few words of thanks not only on behalf of all the guests but especially for the delegates and accompanying persons attending the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Sir Hamilton Whyte,KCMG for his most interesting address. In his far ranging talk, when he showed knowledge of widely diverse subjects, I had a brief fear that he was going to be talking about the details of support methods in deep level mines, or how to avoid flotation problems in multi-metal mines. Although he did not go that far, he touched on subjects which have arisen this week - long term planning and secure supply of minerals at acceptable prices. The dire predictions of the Club of Rome have been debunked with a far more elastic supply of minerals having been proved. Combined with the importance of a falling birthrate in some parts of the world, this will lead to many changes in the future, when hopefully governments will take the long term view rather than look at the next budget or the next election. Maybe some of them are not too lazy to do this for all of us. However as a fellow Ukranian, I feel that he might have been called something different if he had been in Australia. Sir Hamilton, thank you for your talk. Once upon a time - and this is not a fairy story - there was a cobbler who had two sons; one very bright who became a professor of mathematics; the other, dim, who became a millionaire shoemaker. Asked for the secret of his success, the millionaire attributed it to a vital piece of economics which his father had imparted, "Be content with small margins on a large turnover." "So", said the millionaire, "I make my shoes for $2 a pair and sell them for $5. I am very happy with the three per cent profit."
