The paper presents the results of a series of pull out tests performed on roof reinforcement systems currently being adopted in mines in Australia 7mm wire, dividag bar, 15.2mm strand cable, and birdcage cable. The study also investigated the load deformation chara- cteristics and the various design parameters controlling the effectiveness of a cable-grout system. Suggestions for continued work are Highlighted.

Although developed primarily for sintering tantalum, the unit to be described can be used to heat-treat metals in the form ofa bar, wire or strip, by passing a current through them. The upper temperature limit with this type of heating is the melting point of the metal being heated.The unit was designed for vacuum work, but. various gases can be used if required.Briefly, the vacuum sintering furnace consists of a bell which is counter-balanced and may be lowered onto the brass base plate which holds the electrodes. A rubber ring seal is used for vacuum work. The lower flexible grips are bolted to the brass base plate which is at earth 'potential, while the other electrode passes through the plate by way of an electrically insulated vacuum seal. This upper electrode, the height of which can be altered as desired, the lower grips, and the bell are water cooled. The vacuum line to the pumps and a line to the vacuum gauges also lead from the base plate. The more important sections of the unit are described below.THE BELLThe unit was designed so that the bell could be lifted clear of the base plate and the electrodes, thus facilitating adjustment of the latter and the mounting of the specimen to be heated. The Mt Lyell Mine, situated in Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania, has a production history of more than 100 years. Previous mining activities have resulted in substantial modifications to environmental conditions at Mt Lyell and disposal of sulphidic waste rock across the lease has left a legacy of on-going environmental impacts including acid drainage (AD). In 1995 Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) was granted a mining lease Irons the Tasmanian State Government for redevelopment of Mt Lyell and indemnity from actions concerning pollution from previous occupation and use of leased land. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Mt Lyell redevelopment committed CMT to be responsible for waste rock dumps generated from their activities and to ensure that management is in-line with best practice environmental management principles. CMT commenced commercial production in December 1995 with sulphidic material from development of the underground Prince Lyell mine reporting to a single waste rock dump constructed according to a management plan developed in July 1995 and superseded by a management plan for extension in May 1997. The CMT waste rock dump currently has a total capacity of 220 000 m- and approximately 120 000 m3 of rock have been placed to-date. Material reporting to the dump is placed in a densely compacted state to a controlled surface profile. The dump is clay capped and a final revegetated soil layer placed on top. A rock pitched drain extends down to a wetland area in order to remove stormwater and minimise possible soil erosion on the revegetated sections. An integral part of the management plan for the waste rock dump involves characterisation of waste rock to identify geochemical rock types according to acid forming potential with provision for selective placement within the dump. High-risk materials are selectively placed and covered within the core of the waste rock dump, where possible, to control sulphide oxidation. Monitoring equipment has been installed in the waste rock dump by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and an on-going monitoring program has been established to demonstrate the integrity of the dump cover as a barrier to the influx of atmospheric oxygen into the dump. The overall objectives of this program of work are to control the oxidation of sulphidic waste rock in the waste rock dump, minimise the risk of AD, prevent pollution of the aquatic environment and thereby demonstrate the integrity of the CMT waste rock dump management Strategy.

This paper will describe the instrument at the CSIRO Heavy Ion Analytical Facility at North Ryde, including features crucial to its successful application in the geoscience. Examples of applications in the basic geoscience and mineral industry related research are described briefly. Conditions required for widescale applications in the minerals industry are Discussed.

The development of a process for the extraction of antimony from materials produced by Greenbushes Tin Limited has been carried out based on theoretical and laboratory studies. The materials treated have included concentrates of tantalite and cassiterite containing antimony at levels ranging from 0.3% to 2%. Roasting under controlled atmospheres is required to stabilise Sb203 rather than the low vapour pressure metal or higher oxide. Sulphidising additives such as pyrite, pyrrhotite or sulphur give enhanced antimony removal from tantalite and cassiterite at roasting temperatures of 900¦ to 1100¦C. Substantial elimination of antimony to levels of 0.1% or less was Achieved.

A solid electrolyte technique has been used to measure the activity of cobalt in liquid cobalt-gold alloys containing between 0.085 and 0.50 mole fraction of cobalt, and for temperatures from just above the liquidus to around 1550 K. The system exhibits positive deviation from ideality, both in the activities of cobalt and gold, and in the enthalpy and excess entropy of mixing. The results agree with previous measurements using a Knudsen cell - mass spectrometer technique, but differ from those reported for a gas equilibration method. The data have been used to calculate the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide in silica saturated iron silicate slags and to express the solubility of cobalt in such slags as a function of cobalt activity and oxygen pressure.

Thank you chairman, good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. In my talk this afternoon I intend to cover a brief history, some of the recent experiences and an overview of the McArthur River project.If we consider the themes of this forum, Obstacles and Opportunities, I can confidently say that in attempting to develop the McArthur River deposit Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) must have encountered almost every obstacle that can be imagined. However the large size and the high grade of the deposit has ensured an opportunity, from which it is very difficult to walk away from.The McArthur River Here's Your Chance (HYC) Deposit is located in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was discovered by Mount Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955 and is one of the largest known sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits. The deposit has been the subject of numerous investigations and considerable expenditure culminating in a major feasibility study in 1979. There were a number of factors which prevented development, these being the size of the project, the fine grained mineralization, geographical location, market, social and capital cost. The latter had been estimated in the 1979 study to be $800 million at that time.

A nine-month investigation was conducted into the effect on coke quality and blast furnace operation of the addition of bentonite and southern coal to the northern coal fed to the coke ovens at the Newcastle steelworks.Additions of 0·3 per cent bentonite or 25 per cent southern coal to the northern coal increased the coke strength from 15-20 A.S.T.M. stability to 25-30 A.S.T.M. stability. It is likely that improved mixing and blending facilities would, in both cases, give a coke of over 30 A.S.T.M. stability.For the same coke strength, the use of 0 3 per cent imported Wyoming bentonite was considerably cheaper than the use of 25 per cent southern coal, but the use of Australian bentonite promises the same coke strength for still lower costs. Other additives such as coke breeze, charcoal, iron ore fines, and certain other finely divided materials, gave relatively minor improvements in coke quality.There appeared to be sufficient improvement in blast furnace operation and production to justify full scale addition of bentonite to improve coke quality, although other variables, particularly iron ore physical quality, overshadowed on many occasions the effect of coke quality. Further coke trials with southern or bentonite will be carried out when ore quality has been improved by the introduction of ore sintering at Newcastle.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period of operation of the Newcastle coke ovens and blast furnaces from April 1960 (when No. 3 blast furnace was blown in after rebuilding) to December 1960, a bentonite coke trial was carried out based on earlier research findings (Gregory, 1959a, 1959b; Felton and Gregory, 1960; Gregory, 1960) that as little as 0 3 per cent to 05 per cent bentonite clay added to northern N.S.W. high volatile coking coals gave a significant increase in coke strength. This paper is based on an evaluation project engaged upon jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited nnd" IBM Austra]ia Limited. Mount Isa Mines Limited produces most of its copper from large underground open stopes within massive orebodies. Variations in the position and shapes of these stopes can result in improved metal recovery. An interactive graphics system has been developed to assist the mine design engineer optimise his design. The system can assist the engineer throughout the orebody visualis- ation, initial design and optimisation phases of his design. At any stage the engineer may call upon the display of gridded mesh data, digitized ore outlines or existing stopes or development (drives, cross-cuts). This information may be viewed in plan or any vertical section or in three dimensions with rotation. Tonnage and grade calculations may be quickly performed for initial stope outlines or for modifications to them during the optimisation phase. The system design is highly modular. An array of functions for the manipulation of coordinate and line information may be linked with the development or stope design functions in whichever way the designer desires.

Revegetation at Perseverance Mining's Nagambie Gold Project is an excellent example of cost effective revegetation in the Central Victorian Goldfields. Work has centred on waste rock dumps, vegetative screens, amenity planting and revegetation trials on cyanide heap leach pads. A wetland is under construction and in consultation with farmers, waste heaps were planted with perennial pasture species.The area treated to date is 18 hectares comprising: 16 hectares of pasture and two hectares of trees/understory. Direct seeding and tubestock planting has cost $16,464. Cost effective revegetation demands careful planning from the EES stage onwards. The Government agreed rehabilitation plan should be comprehensive, realistic and above all flexible. This document must be kept in mind during the mining operation.

The Paleoproterozoic Hitura Ni-Cu deposit in western Finland is in an ultramafic igneous complex composed of two subvertical plug-shaped bodies embedded in intensely migmatised felsic gneisses. The ultramafic complex is not far from a north-south trending graphitic and sulphidic gneiss zone interpreted to be a primary sulphide-graphite unit in the metasedimentary sequence. The sulphide accumulation exists as a zone parallel to the contact of the northern ultramafic body. The ultramafic rock types, now mainly serpentinites, have primarily been olivine adcumulates in the core grading to olivine orthocumulates and pyroxenites towards the margins. Coarse-grained felsic pegmatite veins injected serpentinite where they now exhibit prominent zoned alteration rims of chlorite, antophyllite and talc. The serpentinite core of the body was primarily an olivine adcumulate derived from a tholeiitic or high-Mg basalt parental magma with about 11 wt % MgO. Metamorphism and alteration have totally changed the igneous mineral compositions and the rock types are serpentinites (from olivine adcumulates), ambhibole-bearing serpentinites and amphibole-chlorite rocks (from pyroxenites). As the result of CO2 alteration talc is an accessory mineral throughout the serpentinite. Like silicates, also sulphide minerals are altered. In the core of the body the low-grade sulphide dissemination still reveals primary igneous interstitial forms. The core sulphides are now mackinawite, pentlandite and valleriite instead of primary igneous pyrrhotite and pentlandite derived from Mss. At the marginal zone the heavy dissemination and net-textured sulphides display pyrrhotite-pentlandite-magnetite intergrowths with magnetite films along cleavage of sulphides, mackinawite in pentlandite and exsolution textures of different low-temperature pyrrhotite phases as the result of alteration processes. Mechanically weak rocks, complicated structures and textures of the ore, magnetite and mackinawite intergrowths in pentlandite and readily-floating MgO silicates cause problems in exploitation of the deposit. Fluid flow, heat transfer and combustion in a nickel flash smelter have been investigated by numerical modelling and flow visualisation. The three-dimensional numerical model incorporates turbulent two-phase fluid dynamics, radiative heat transfer and combustion. The main features include the use of the k-E turbulence model, the Lagrangian tracking of particles, radiative heat transfer based on the spherical harmonics method, and chemical reactions. The predicted flow fields are in good agreement with data obtained from a series of flow visualisation experiments on a cold water model. The interaction mechanism between the fluid flow and the solid particles is examined for a range of particle sizes both with and without injected oil in a series of simulations. The heat transfer in the shaft is dominated by combustion and radiation, whereas the ignition of particles is influenced by the particle size and the added oil. Flow and temperature fields for both gas and solid particles are presented as well as the fraction of sulphur removed from the particles.

The development of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves is a significan step towards informing the financial community and the public about the future profitability and risks of investing in resource companies. The Code is also important from the accountants' point of view because it provides them with a well-defined bash for assigning costs or attributing value to the assets of resource companies and hence improving their financial reports. Although reporting to the public is ultimately the responsibility of management, accountants, like geologists, are frequently required to provide information for inclusion in these reports. Jr the last ten years, there has been a considerable refinement in the reporting of mineral resources which can be attributed mainly tc the progress made towards developing the Code. It seems tha the classification and terminology that the geologists have developed are widely used in the annual reports. However, little progress has been made by accountants in improving the financia information. The purpose of this paper is twofold: (a) to outline briefl) some of the major problems in accounting and reporting fo; mining companies and; (b) to examine the potential contribution of the Code in solving those problems.

The performance of the Renison tin concentrator was assessed in detail for two arrangements of the three available ball mills. With two mills used for primary grinding and the third for regrinding table tailing, the concentrator recovered 65.3 per cent of tin in the three tin concentrates produced by tabling, vanning and flotation at a calculated overall grade of 37.5 per cent tin prior to batch dressing. In the second arrangement one mill was used for primary grinding and two mills for separate regrinding of table tailing and sulphide concentrate. The metallurgical effective- ness of the change was somewhat obscured by unintended changes,i.e. an increase in the assay of the fresh feed from 1.38 per cent to 1.1+6 per cent tin and unresolved changes in the sulphide rougher flotation and tabling. However, using the results from a detailed size by size analysis of the behaviour of ore components in appropriate parts of the plant, it proved possible to show that, had the two unintended changes not occurred, up to 5 per cent

The difficulty in creating and obtaining a competitive edge in the mineral industry is rapidly increasing. The Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in the far north of Sweden is currently thriving on the world market through firm managerial strategy. LKAB believes in upgrading its raw material to produce a high quality iron ore product for sale to steelworks throughout the world. It is vital that this product is also of uniform quality and quantity to provide quality assurance to customers. The first link in meeting these product requirements starts in the underground workings. Mining methods and operations are of large-scale. Automation and continuous production streamline operations and reduce operating costs. These factors have built Kiruna Iron Ore Mine into the world's biggest, most modern, underground iron ore mine. To remain competitive on the world market, LKAB relies heavily on research and development. The mine is currently in a phase of upgrading its operations. A 25-tonne Toro electric loader is being tested to improve the rate of output of ore from the mine. Long hole drills are being improved to increase accuracy and efficiency. An electronic detonating system will improve detonator delay precision. Projects are underway to better understand ore flow mechanisms from a caving orebody. Benefits include improved ore recovery along with better rock quality control at the caving front. The continued updating of mining operations at Kiruna will enable LKAB to continue to maintain its competitive advantage on the world market in the production of high quality iron ore products.

An integrated mining equipment development organisation is typified by Deutsche Montsn Technologic of Essen, Germany. working on improvements in reliability, production and control in coal mines. Examples of recent mining advances are in mechanised roadheading, in different approaches to cutting technology, and in low height roof bolting.On the longwall face the mechanics of cutting are related to supplied energy as well as to dust make. In conveying both armoured face conveyors and conveyor belts are monitored. Roof support is not neglected and the continuous pumping of stowage slurries provides further options for longwall support. Surveying developments, particularly the gyro-theodolite, directional drilling. and shaft vehicle monitoring provide further examples of advances in control in coal mining activities.

This work describes a novel mapping technique that allows the direct overlay of calculated local phase equilibria on micrographs of the physical system. The technique demonstrated integrates FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by Thermfact Ltd. and GTT-Technologies) phase equilibria calculations with mapped compositions determined by Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) to visually express calculated properties while preserving the spatial information of the sample. The developed methodology is used to analyse interrupted blast furnace softening and melting tests containing mixed burdens of lump and sinter. Tests are interrupted at 1300C and cooled to room temperature for analysis. Phases present at room temperature are analysed to infer the liquid fraction and phases present at high temperature. Analysis of the interface regions between the dissimilar burdens allows insights to be gained into the interaction mechanism. During the transition from solid to liquid, migration and interaction of liquid oxide across the interfaces of the dissimilar burdens has been observed and demonstrated to impact softening and melting performance. Specifically, interaction of the oxides generated by lump (primarily FeO, SiO2 and Al2O3) and sinter (primarily FeO, CaO, SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO) are analysed, and the occurrence of a range of new mineral phases such as merwinite, melilite, olivine and bredigite observed.

Gold at Renco occurs in association with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and quartz and is confined to a series of brittle fractures and fault breccias (reefs) preferentially developed within an anastomosing ductile shear zone. During late Archaean crustal movements both the orebody and the enclosing host rocks were deformed within a series of east-north-east striking, southerly dipping, shear zones. The reefs within these shear zones are now texturally different to those away from the shear zones, and this difference is reflected by differences in the way the gold is distributed in the two reef types. These differences are not taken irto account by the software package currently being used to generate kriged plans of gold grade and reef thickness and this may explain some of the inaccuracies found in these plans.
