Over the past fifteen years, horizontal drilling in coal seams for advance degasification has become an established practice in the United States of America. Consolidation Coal Company pioneered the development of the horizontal drilling system and licensed the technology in the U.S. A. and to Du Pont (Australia) for commercial production. This paper discusses the most recent developments in the equipment design, especially the borehole telemetry system, known as the Downhole Drill Monitor (DDM).

An overall review of the selection of rock strength and deformation characteris- tics for the design of the Melbourne Under- qround Rail Loop (MIJRL) rock tunnels is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on aspects of in-situ testing, including large diameter plate bearing tests. Material on the interpretation of test results for use in the design of the tunnel linings and openings is included, with a brief discus- sion of desiqn methods.

To assess the present-day functionality of large-scale sublevel caving at LKAB Kiruna a comprehensive measurement program was undertaken involving blast function, fragmentation and gravity flow. As part of this assessment, a fragmentation measurement trial was performed based on 3D imaging of the drawpoint and corresponding bucket load of the underground load-haul-dump (LHD) excavator. 3D image data from stereo photogrammetry was collected and an automated image analysis strategy developed. A number of data sets were collected for each of the drawpoint and LHD bucket, along with sieving results for four of the LHD bucket loads (totally about 70 t). Two of the sieving results were used to inform the automated image analysis strategy, and two were held back as a comparison. Large variations in the visible particles are apparent when comparing corresponding drawpoints and LHD buckets highlighting the impact of sampling location and the need to measure large quantities of data in order to avoid bias from small samples. The results show that 3D imaging and analysis can produce fully automated measurement and analysis of the visible particle size distribution. Although this is not the same as the sieve-size distribution it provides useful estimation of both the larger size classes and a bulk estimate of fine material below approximately 60 mm. The 3D stereo photogrammetry measurement system used produced very high 3D point density but this was achieved using a custom up-sampling technique which significantly smoothed the data, removing small particles, smoothing edges, and this negatively affected the particle delineation algorithms.CITATION:Thurley, M J, Wimmer, M and Nordqvist, A, 2015. Geological structures are irregular and intricate, so creating a 31) solid geology model is a complicated process. A software system can only partially automate this process, since geological knowledge and experience are required. Therefore, the interaction of a geologist is critical for such a system. This paper discusses some useful advanced functions for enhancing the visualisation and manipulation of 3D solid geology models: flexible attribute display, multiple views, auxiliary display objects, and geologically sensitive operations. It also describes some experiments to explore the effectiveness of these functions and presents sample output. Most existing 3D solid geology modelling systems are implemented in an ad hoc way, which greatly reduces their reusability and extensibility. This paper presents a generic framework for 3D solid geology modelling systems, which is based on object-oriented technology. The deficiencies of current systems may be improved by using this generic framework. A modelling process based on drillhole data is discusses as a case study.

Systems for the routine on-line determination of ash content of process streams in coal preparation plants and handling systems have been in use in Australia for over four years. More recently, monitors for on-line moisture measurement have been developed to complement the ash measurement function. The technology for these systems is reviewed briefly. The development of reliable ash and moisture monitors has made the implementation of automatic systems of coal quality control practical. The emerging philosophies of automatic control in Australian preparation plants are examined with particular emphasis on systems involving dense medium circuit regulation. Related developments in flotation control and coal sorting are noted to complete this overview.

The underground mining of a narrow vein hard rock orebody is a capital and labour intensive method of extraction. Due to the nature of underground mining it is difficult for higher level managers to physically see the efficiencies and inefficiencies of a particular method. Extraction methods and sequencing often need to be altered from the original planned methods as a result of mine developent, providing more in depth information as it progresses. As a result of these issues contract mining of these orebodies is common practice. There are several types of contract structures for the purpose of underground contract mining with many complex permutations of them that reflect the different needs of each individual company and orebody. The different contracts are arranged dependent on the mining companyÆs desire to transfer or, alternatively, embrace risk. This presentation gives a brief overview on these different methods and their various advantages and limitations with regard to small scale and narrow vein underground mining. With respect to these different contracting methods, the presenter reviews the mutual growth benefits of emerging partnering opportunities, specifically with regard to smaller explorers exploring and developing prospective mining tenements. The specific advantages to small explorers include the resource flexibility and speed of project development that private mining contractors can provide. Given the contracting methods that are available, there is potential for small private mining companies to gain minor stakes in major projects and major stakes in medium sized projects by employing innovative contracting solutions to provide mutual benefits to the parties. A mine waste dump progression plan can provide a clear outlook of the mining operation. To produce such an output requires detailed placement schedule of the mined material, including the volume (or tonnage) and the allocated dumping location. However, current practise mainly focuses on the ore production, over-simplifying the waste material scheduling. As a result, a rock dump is often treated as a single point in long-term planning, making it difficult to predict the waste dump progression pattern over the life-of-mine. Without such a guidance, it is almost impossible to carry out progressive rehabilitation on the waste rock dumps. The lack of dumping schedule could cause delay in development construction, ie tailing storage facility and run-of-mine pad. Other downstream effect due to the over-simplification is inaccurate estimation of required truck hours, which could have huge financial impact on the operation.In this paper, mixed integer programming (MIP) models of different objective functions, ie maximise truck productivity by minimising the overall haulage distance, minimise required truck deviation between adjacent years, and a hybrid between the two objectives, are utilised to generate the long-term optimum rock placement schedules under the criteria of satisfying site specific conditions. All three MIP models are implemented in a large scale open pit mine. The numerical solutions from the models forms three different rock placement schedules, based on which, the yearly truck requirements are easily calculated and compared. The graphical results show the three corresponding waste dump progression patterns over the life-of-mine, providing the optimised long-term forecast of the operation.CITATION:Li, Y, Topal, E and Ramazan, S, 2014. The Broken Hill orebody within the leases of ZC Mines is still a major lead-silver-zinc resource after over 80 years of mining. It illustrates particular problems encountered in resource and reserve estimation in old mines. The six mined ore lenses are characterised by three features: ò complex external geometry, ò high internal grade variability, ò bimodal grade distribution. The high grade 3, 2 and 1 lenses and B lode have sharp external contacts but contain some low grade internal zones. By contrast A lode is of lower average grade and comprises an extensive but geometrically variable mineralised zone within which are numerous irregular bodies of high and medium grade ore. Geological factors are the main source of variability in reserve estimation, which historically has been conservative. For many years the geological resource tonnage has been maintained at a level sufficient to make up for extraction but at a gradually declining grade. Using a geological block cut off grade of 10% Pb + Zn the present in situ resource is 53.8 Mt grading 8% lead and 13% zinc. Using empirical cut factors a "recoverable reserve" is derived from this large geological tonnage. There is some doubt that the "recoverable reserve" is conservative enough to reflect mining reality. The most sensitive indicator of forthcoming change in total resource or insufficient drilling and development is given by changes in the tonnage and grade of possible ore from which the proved and probable categories are derived. Examples are given to show that where reserves are drill indicated, the delineation required for proved ore reserves must be enhanced to achieve final stope design. The move in recent years to greater emphasis on non entry mining and lower recovery of in situ material poses a dilemma for a mine which has practised 100% recovery for much of its past. The need for a realistic reserve assessment in current terms needs to be balanced against the fullest possible geological knowledge of the resource to cater for future technological developments.

Access to geoscience reference informa- tion including mining and mineral processing has increased considerably in the last five years in Australia. This has been due principally to the use of computer-based information storage and retrieval systems. The main reference data base for the mineral and petroleum industries and disciplines in Australia is the Australian Earth Sciences Information System (AESIS), cooperatively developed and coordinated by the Australian Mineral Foundation (AMF). AESIS is created on the CSIRO computing network (CSIRONET) which has a CYBER 76 host computer located at the CSIRO Division of Computing Research (DCR) at Canberra. Data entry was until recently carried out by AMF using a dedicated line through the Adelaide CSIRONET node to the CYBER 76 interactive system. Data entry is now done directly at the AMF on a DEC PDP 11/44 mini computer that is also a host work station on CSIRONET. Data collection via magnetic tape media input from other computer-based systems is under development. The software used for data entry and management of the data base was developed by CSIRO CILES Systems Development Group. For public interactive online use the AESIS data base is transferred by tape to AUSINET - the Australian information net- work run by ACI Computer Services, Melbourne, where the data base is converted to a form suitable for the IBM STAIRS software. CSIRO facilities at DCR Canberra are used to produce computer type-set camera ready products and output in microform, on magnetic tape or as graphic display. A new high intensity flotation process 'FASTFLOT' is explained and its theoretical advantages compared with other flotation systems are discussed. The results of initial FASTFLOT testing on the zinc roughing circuit at Pasminco Mining, Broken Hill South concentrator are presented and compared to recent plant data. The comparison suggests that on roughing duties, the FASTFLOT process yields superior concentrate grade while requiring less than one third the residence time of a conventional mechanical cell plant. Strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also presented.

The application of reinforcement techniques to enhance the stability of underground coal mine roadways subject to high stresses is discussed. Research conducted in the Illawarra Coal Measures has been aimed to delineate the factors which influence the behaviour of rock above roadways and the performance of the reinforcement placed. Design considerations for the reinforcement of mine roadways in the Bulli coal are based on a quantification of the rock response together with a reinforcement strategy to enhance the structural integrity of the roof strata.

While the underground mining work environment may have processes and equipment considered unique, most of the broad issues likely to affect the occupational health and safety of employees are not. One such occupational health and safety issue that is common to the mining sector and most other industries is noise. Noise as an occupational health and safety issue is of national significance. Presently noise induced hearing loss costs Australia around $35 million per year on compensation claims experience alone. Noisy equipment and work environments are still being tolerated in parts of the mining industry as `part of the job'. Where work has been undertaken in noise management, considerable emphasis has been placed on either industrial hygiene monitoring programs or the provision of hearing protectors to miners working on or around noisy equipment.Opportunities for more cost-effective and long term methods for controlling noise exist. Ready to apply solutions to noise problems in the mining industry are available, but for many mining operators this information is often difficult to obtain. To overcome this problem, the SHARE program collects and distributes solutions to occupational health and safety problems. The program aims to help organisations to close the gap between what is known about solving health and safety problems and what is actually being applied at the shop floor level: Recent developments have incorporated the SHARE program concept into worksite hazard management projects that involve the participation of employee representatives, front line supervisors and engineering personnel. Besides providing workforce members with an increased understanding of hazard management skills, the SHARE in-house program results in the implementation and sharing of solutions to health and safety problems by the program participants.

The equity market is now very much within a global village environ- ment, with various exchanges acting as agencies for the big casino. In this predicament, mining companies, who provide the most extensive, but relevant risk assessment information, will be best placed for favoured treatment by potential international investors: But what risk assessment information in summary form can be provided to support a resource/reserve statement? Even more importantly, does "objective" data exist, whose trends will support a resource/reserve state- ment? A prime need of the informed mining investor is to determine whether or not the resource/reserve statement is believable? But more importantly will it be realised? While the implications within the text of the majority of reports on resource/reserves suggests that the estimates are conservative, the record indicates that very few estimates are. In fact, to date, reports claiming to be conservative in respect of the overall grade estimate at a specfic cutoff have not reflected the realised grade at the stated cutoff; it has been more common for the realised grade to be lower than implied by the resource/reserve statement. Further, it is not uncommon for penalty elements to be understated and these components are rarely incorporated within resource/reserve statements.

The results of about 30 years of exploration and mining activities and research studies in the Kambalda mining district, Western Australia, have led to general agreement that the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores formed as a result of igneous processes (Ross, 1974; Ross and Hopkins, 1975; Gresham and Loftus-Hills, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Lesher, 1989 and many others). Despite this agreement, the controls on sulphide supersaturation and concentration of the resulting sulphide in a limited zone, remain uncertain and controversial. A major uncertainty is the source of sulphur in the ore deposits. Two principal sulphur sources have been proposed: 1. komatiite lava/magma (Hudson, 1972; Naldrett, 1973; Lesher et al, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Foster et at, 1995), and 2. sedimentary material (Groves, Barrett and McQueen, 1979; Lesher, Arndt and Groves, 1984; Lesher, 1989; Lesher and Campbell, 1993). Resolution of the uncertainty regarding the sulphur source is required for a complete understanding of the controls on ore formation, which in turn would significantly impact exploration strategies in the Kambalda mining district and elsewhere. This paper reviews the constraints on sulphur sources for the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores in the Kambalda mining district. The focus is on the general characteristics of the ores and surrounding rocks: individual ore deposits are not described, though specific examples are noted where appropriate. The stratigraphic and volcanic settings and geochemical (major and trace element and isotopic compositions) characteristics of the ore deposits and surrounding rocks are considered within the context of the competing sulphur source models, and future directions of research in the district are noted.

Bacterial oxidation technology was successfully applied in a mine site pilot plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrates. The bacterial culture was proven capable of selectively breaking down the refractory sulphide minerals to release the gold. Gold extractions greater than 90 per cent were possible when oxidised concentrate was leached with cyanide solution. The pilot plant was designed using data scaled up from laboratory testing and sized for transport by standard vehicles. The bacterial culture used to break down the refractory gold-bearing mineral was a natural mixed culture able to withstand temperatures up to 55¦C, thus making the technology particularly suitable for use in Australian and in some North American gold mining regions. The pilot plant was operated at the mine site over a six month period. Performance of the bacterial oxidation technology under site conditions was as predicted from the laboratory testing. It was demonstrated that the culture was robust under normal site condi- tions and that the culture could withstand wide variations in the feed and the operating conditions, while still achieving satisfactory oxidation levels. The technology was able to be utilised by site operators and supervisors with minimum intervention. Design data for a commercial facility was collected for a number of different concentrate samples and a feasibility study completed. Estimated capital and operating cost have been obtained.

Effective exploration, testing and analysis is essential for good process design and optimisation of coal preparation plants. Coal processing relies on the sizing and washability characteristics of the particular coal to define the most cost effective design to meet the market requirements. Flowsheet development and equipment selection is dependent on the natural quality characteristics of the coal, its physical properties and the value of the final product in its market. The methodology of process selection and the key elements in design are discussed. Coal is consumed in two general markets: ò steaming coal - both domestic and export, and ò metallurgical coal. This paper discusses the typical economic analysis required to evaluate the potential for, and cost benefit of, providing the flexibility to switch coals between markets. A case study illustrates the methodology of process selection in a typical high value metallurgical coal.

In order to satisfy environmental and mine operational requirements it is becoming increasingly important to minimise ground blast vibrations at certain locations. These locations are often in soil or on large resonant structures such as grain silos, highway bridges or even the walls of an open pit. A soil monitoring exercise was carried out to evaluate the common practice of coupling vibration detectors to the ground using spikes. At a series of locations in an operating quarry the spiked array response to single blastholes was compared with that of an accelerometer array attached to a calibrated embedded mount. The results clearly showed that the spiked arrays over-estimated the true ground vibration by 46.5 per cent on average, with a maximum observed error of 99.2 per cent. These errors are considered too large for compliance monitoring where accurate vibration levels are required for comparison with prescribed limits. Although spike coupling is convenient, its use for compliance monitoring should be viewed with caution. Unfortunately, however, many manufacturers supply their detectors as spiked arrays. A structural monitoring exercise was also carried out to evaluate the vibration response of a grain silo, highway bridge and a pit wall to the initiation of single blastholes. In this case accelerometers and standard geophones were firmly attached to the bridge which resonated at low frequencies. The results clearly show that, due to their limited low-frequency response, the geophones typically measured only half the true vibration level as measured by the accelerometers.

The current methodology for delineating and subsequently evaluating coal reserves is based on the use of vertical drill holes and surface based geophysics/geology. These techniques have three major problems, these being respectively:-a) Vertical drill holes can only provide a small sample of the coal seam and stratigraphy. Therefore the planar variation in coal reserve and environment parameters can only be approximated.b) Although surface based geophysics has had its fair share of success in recent years, there are still environments which have masked the finding of major structures.c) Access to drill sites is difficult at some locations due to mountaineous terrain, standing water and environmental impact.

Golden Pig mine is in the central part of the Southern Cross greenstone belt within the Archaean Yilgarn craton. The mine has produced approximately 2.5 Mt of ore at 5.7 g/t Au to yield approximately 450 000 oz. The majority of gold mineralisation is hosted within extensively deformed and quartz-veined BIFÆs. In addition to the BIF-hosted mineralisation, an increasingly important part of the resource lies in the Taurus Lode, which is a N-NNW-trending amphibolite facies shear zone. The Taurus Lode lies within a continuous shear-zone that has a moderate to steeply WSW dipping foliation, and a mineral lineation of biotite, amphibole and pyrrhotite plunging consistently 10¦ S. Drive faces, subperpendicular to the foliation and lineation, consistently show evidence for syn-mineralisation reverse shear. Exposures parallel to the mineral lineation and perpendicular to the foliation reveal both sinistral and dextral asymmetries. These characteristics suggest that the vorticity axis of the Taurus Shear Zone is parallel to the mineral lineation, and that the simple shear sense is reverse. This geometry can arise when there is a major component of flattening across the shear zone, which may be due to interference between two adjacent granite domes. The BIF-hosted lodes plunge consistently 15¦ NNW coincident with the intersection of the axial planar cleavage of the regional folds and the Taurus Shear Zone. However, where the penetrative shear characteristics control the orientation and geometry of the mineralisation, oreshoots plunge SSW, parallel to the stretching and mineral lineations within the shear. The SSW plunge of strike extensive and laterally confined high-grade, economic ore shoots within the Taurus shear is fundamental to defining the economic mineralisation within this lode. Identifying the zones of maximum continuity and establishing the optimal position for future development will maximise ore extraction.

On-land waste rock dumps at BHP Billiton Base MetalsÆ Island Copper Mine (ICM) near the northern end of Vancouver Island, B.C. continue to discharge ARD. These waters, which amount to approximately five million cubic metres each year, are injected into a three-layer, meromictic pit lake for treatment. The top layer is brackish water, replenished by each yearÆs rainfall (amounting to nearly 2 m/year). This top layer of water must meet effluent permit limits for heavy metals. This water eventually exfiltrates through a æbeachÆ waste rock dump, which is 93 per cent submerged along the north shore of Rupert Inlet. The middle and bottom layers of the Pit Lake are saline and currently oxic (2 mg/L dissolved oxygen) and anoxic (0.03 mg/L dissolved oxygen), respectively. Spreading of a liquid fertilizer every ten days throughout the top layer results in plankton and bacterial blooms that scavenge zinc, copper and cadmium out of this layer eventually to become mineral sediment in the bottom of the pit lake. Adsorption on planktonic skeletons and mineral precipitates also scavenges these dissolved metals from the middle and bottom layers to form bottom sediment. Sulfate reduction has recently begun in the bottom sediments. Diagenetic processes in the bottom sediments will eventually transform most of the dissolved heavy metals into insoluble sulfides. Cycling of ferric iron between the sediment and the water column and back seems to contribute dramatically to the biogeochemical metal removal processes. This biogeochemical system serves to maintain the top-layer water well within permit limits for discharge to the environment.
