The Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited. The Operation lies within PanAust’s 2600 square-kilometre Phu Bia Contract Area in northern Laos. Commencing production in 2012, Ban Houayxai is operated by PanAust’s Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining. PanAust owns a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Operation mines an intermediate sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposit and comprises an open-pit feeding ore to a conventional carbon-in-leach process plant. Metallurgical recoveries for gold and silver are approximately 75-85 per cent and 55 per cent respectively. To year-end 2017, the Operation had poured 0.65 million ounces (oz) of gold and 4.7 million oz of silver. The Ban Houayxai Ore Reserve supports a mine life of approximately four years from the end of 2017. The Ban Houayxai deposit is in an early Permian volcano-sedimentary unit which is part of a late Carboniferous to early Permian (310–270 million years ago) volcanic-plutonic sequence of the Truong Son Fold Belt. The deposit formed when hot saline (240–415°C, 2.7–13.0 weight per cent NaCl equivalent) fluids ascended from a geologically fertile island arc porphyry into overlying volcanics along a fault or faults in the early Permian (290–256 million years ago) (Manaka et al, 2014). There is currently a world wide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow charac- teristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A Capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for deter- mining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0 0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦- 319¦C, Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physico- chemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage.

Alcoa of Australia operates three Alumina refineries in the South West of Western Australia at Kwinana adjacent to the South suburbs of Perth and at Pinjarra and Wagerup in rural settings 100 and 150 kilometres south of Perth respectively (see Figure 1). Alcoa's total alumina production is currently around five million tonnes per annum and this will increase to 5.5 million tonnes by early 1990. Further expansion of production is likely if current world aluminium demand trends continue. Alcoa's refineries utilise bauxite mined in the nearby Darling Range which is low grade by world standards having around 32 % by weight extractable alumina (by comparison Weipa bauxite yields around 55% alumina). This means that for every tonne of alumina produced two tonnes of solid wastes remain and therefore while we in Western Australia can boast of hosting the largest alumina industry in the world with around 18% of total world production we suffer from having the lion's share or 40% of the world's bauxite residues to dispose of. In its Western Australian setting the management of these residues in a manner which is acceptable to the community creates many challenges. These are primarily due to the mass and volume of waste produced, its chemical and physical characteristics and the environmental features of the local area including close proximity of neighbours, competing land uses and the presence of natural resources such as surface water and groundwater. In addition the trend towards more stringent statutory environmental controls and greater political and community awareness of environmental issues means that we must be able to demonstrate improvements that will reduce the considerable adverse impacts of past practices. Of course we must also try to keep the overall cost of residue disposal as low as possible to maintain our competitiveness with refineries which may have much smaller volumes of waste to dispose of and less environmental constraints.

Airborne rock dust poses serious long-term health complications to workers in the underground mining and civil environment where rock excavation is utilised. During drilling, airborne rock particles are immediately released into the breathable environment where additionally, the settled dust can be reintroduced into the air further down in production. The purpose of this study is to build a characterisation suite of dust particles such that underground operations can implement more appropriate dust suppression and mitigation techniques in accordance to pick wear. Therefore, concrete is cut to create a preliminary dust characterisation baseline, where future cutting tests will be performed on limestone and sandstone rocks.In this study, three conical pick wears (new, moderately worn, and fully worn picks) are used to generate dust from a concrete block and characteristics are statistically compared between the dusts. Airborne respirable particles are collected during cutting and deposited fine material, orparticles left on the surface of the block, are collected after cutting. The dusts are then analysed through standardised methods, field emission scanning electron microscope image capture with image analyses, and laser diffraction methods. Findings reveal that the worn pick generated thehighest concentration of respirable dust, all picks generated dust containing quartz, the three picks generally generated respirable dusts with similar particle shapes (in terms of roundness, roughness, and aspect ratio), and the worn pick generated the largest deposited fine material particles.

LKAB operates two underground mines in Kiruna and Malmberget, Sweden. Blast furnace pellet is the main product and makes up 70 per cent of total production. The orebodies are hosted by 1910 - 1860 Ma old volcanic rocks. The host rocks and the ores were affected by the Svecokarelian orogeny for 1890 - 1860 Ma ago. The deposit belongs to the Kiruna type apatite-rich iron ore. Magnetite is the main ore mineral but haematite is the dominant ore mineral in some orebodies in the western part of the deposit. Large-scale sublevel caving is the dominant mining method. Three main haulage levels are in operation at present. The ore boundaries and quality can be detected by geophysical logging resulting in reduced waste dilution and subsequent grade reduction. The susceptibility measurements have been used in the magnetite ore since 1991 and gamma-gamma measurements in the haematite ore since 1998. The mining scale has increased during the last 20 years but diamond drilling has remained at approximately 18 000 drilling metres per year. Uncertainties in the ore constructions can lead to unexpected cost increases, ore loss and dilution. The ore boundaries are evaluated with percussion drill holes using in-hole geophysics to achieve satisfactory geological knowledge. The probes are calibrated in all currently mined orebodies. The correlation between core sample assays and measured susceptibility and gamma-gamma values is strong. The cost to determine the ore boundary by percussion drilling with in-hole geophysics is two-thirds lower, and productivity is six times higher compared to diamond drilling. The measurements are made by geotechnicians and the interpretations by a geologist. The results are transferred to a database and presented three dimensionally as holes with iron grade intervals on mine maps. The interpreted holes are used by the geologist in various ways in the geological modelling. Layout planning uses the measurements as a tool to place the drifts at the correct distance from the ore contact especially in the longitudinal sublevel caving and the production hole planning to optimise the final length of the cross-cuts and drifts for best ore recovery.

The Kennedy Siltstone Open Cut provides graded rock for stope filling. Rotary drilling of 310 mm blastholes with a Gardner Denver GD120 is used, and the successful application of an equilateral triangular drilling pattern is described. Charging practices and the development of bulk slurry handling are outlined. Blast monitoring plays an important role in K.S.O.C. drilling and blasting operations. The proximity of nearby residential areas (1300 m) and the Mount Isa Airport (4500 m) necessitates special attention with regard to the minimisation of both air blast and ground vibration levels. The application and control of drilling and blasting parameters has had a direct bear- ing on success of the mining operations and also played an important role in reducing the disturbance to the community.

Recent developments in geophysical borehole log analysis using the Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR) are now routinely used in a number Australian coal mining operations. This allows development of 3D geotechnical strata characterisation models for a range of purposes. The availability of this data provides a means to identify relationships between ground conditions and ground behaviour. As a result, several new design methods have been developed to assist in the strata management process such as roof support, longwall shield design and shaft stability assessment. Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates a large base metal property near Bathurst, New Brunswick in eastern Canada. Nominal capacity for the underground mining operation and concentrator is 10 250 DMT/day. Four concentrates are produced by differential flotation technology to recover minerals containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. Two characteristics of the Brunswick ores have a major impact on mineral processing operations. The mineralogy of the ore is complex with a total sulphide mineral content of 85 per cent. In addition, the ore is extremely fine-grained, and satisfactory liberation is difficult to achieve. These characteristics directly influence flotation selectivity and thereby affect metallurgical performance. Significant improvements in metallurgical performance have been achieved through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment. Current operating practice and the metallurgical advancements are detailed.

Ion flotation involves the adsorption of ionic species, in association with surfactant molecules, at the surface of rising gas bubbles, for the purpose of recovering and concentrating those ions. The objective of this study was to optimise the ion flotation process using a heap-leach liquor, containing gold cyanide, and the surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The aim was to minimise the surfactant reagent dose, maximise the throughput of feed liquor in the process, and satisfy the dual constraints of a high gold recovery and a high volume reduction factor. Development of a first order model of the ion flotation process formed the theoretical basis for the test program procedure and the interpretation of the results. Batch tests were used in order to determine the ultimate recovery curve for the heap leach liquor-CTAB surfactant system. The results indicated that a surfactant dose of about 0.083 g/l would be necessary in order to achieve a satisfactory gold recovery. Continuous tests were then performed on a small-scale pilot plant at the Newcastle Laboratories. The optimum result achieved was a gold recovery of 85 per cent, a volume reduction factor of ten, and a feed throughput of 2.3 m3/m2-h. Recent work also indicates that very much higher volume reductions can be achieved using a larger diameter vessel. The improvement may be a consequence of a reduction in wall effects and hence an improvement in foam drainage.

Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited have recently commissioned a 14 Megawatt power station adjacent to its underground coal mining operation at Appin NSW. The power station is fuelled by methane gas extracted from the coal seams 500 metres below the surface. The methane is compressed and cooled prior to its injection into the combustor of a single shaft gas turbine. The turbine is coupled through a reduction gearbox to an alternator. There is sufficient power generated to cover colliery load, with any excess being exported to Prospect County Council, which is the supply authority for the south western region of Sydney.

Over the last decade computers have become an essential element in assessing the economic feasibility of mining new mineral deposits and in assisting a variety of related support functions. A broad overview is given of the many technical application areas where computers are contributing to the mining industry with reference to work being done on the evaluation of drill hole information, mineral inventory modelling, ore reserve estimation, financial analysis, process simulation, process control, workshop job scheduling, PERT applications, and com- puter aided drafting. In all these areas the computer has greatly reduced the manual effort involved in looking at alternatives. It has had a significant effect in eliminating delays in revising calculations, or rescheduling activities to incorporate new data or cater for changing conditions, while at the same time providing more accurate and prompt information for the management decision making Process.

A prototype version of a computer controll- ed on-line scanning electron microscope image analyser, employing the real-time signals ob tamed by digital control of the electron beam has been used to obtain statistical quantificat lion of a wide range of mineral grain character istics, including composition, size distribut- ion, and degree of liberation. Gold dissolution can be achieved with a number of complexing ligands, all with varying degrees of stability. Processes based on the use of halogens have been known for many years. Beside providing the necessary complex- ing role, the halogens under the appropriate conditions are very effective oxidants for gold. Of the halogens, the gold iodide complexes are the most stable in aqueous solution. Iodine can establish the desired oxidation poten- tial for oxidizing gold, and unlike chlorine and bromine, the oxidizing potential of iodine is mild enough to avoid the oxidation of impurity constituents like metal sulfides. A series of experiments to investigate the fundamental electrochemistry of gold in different halide solutions was performed. Cyclic voltammograms of gold in the presence of 10-2 M chloride, bromide and iodide, respectively show that for a given potential the rate of oxidation is much faster in iodide solution than in either chloride or bromide. An overlay of linear sweep voltammograms for the anodic oxidation of gold in iodide and the cathodic reduction of iodine species on gold provides an effective method for examining the dissolution of gold in iodideftodine solution. The dissolution rates obtained from both electrochemical and actual leaching results are compared. Optimum leaching conditions are analyzed in terms of the iodide/iodine concentrations. Conceptual processes for the recovery of gold and iodide and the regeneration of iodine are discussed.

India is well endowed with vast reserves of banded hematite ore, about 12 billion tonnes, estimated by some conventional methods. Various authors have assessed this huge reserve using some advanced geostatistical methods. A Banded Iron Formation (BIF) belt named the `Singhbhum-Keonjhar-Bonai' belt in India has been chosen as a case study. In this paper, the experiences of Chiria iron ore, in particular, have been described. This study will finally create a dynamic mineral inventory after standardising the geostatistical parameters which will help to cater for the needs of the stringent quality requirements of the Indian steel industries.

Blast Engineers frequently use the terminology "the blast showed good heave", or even "the heave was better this time". It is reasonably obvious that "good" and "better" are not the best terms to use. It is also noted that any variation in the data can be misleading. The author proposes a more precisely defined and objective set of measures as tried and tested in a project in 1988. Simple objective measurements of a muck pile profile can measure 1. distance thrown 2. spread of material 3. heaping of material 4. skewness, or bias in the heaping 5. rotation of the mass This technique enables one to compare the profiles from different blasts without relying on subjective experience or judgement. Simple, artificial profiles will be presented to illustrate the problems of description; and then application of the measurement techniques to these profies will be discussed with physical interpretations. The mathematical techniques will be presented, and results of the application of the techniques to real data collected during research carried out at Baimsdale in Victoria, will be presented as illustration. The use of these techniques in mathematical modelling will be discussed.

A reliable scale-up procedure for column flotation must address three important areas of column design, ie column geometry, sparging system and wash water distribution network. The column geometry is dictated by the maximum froth carrying capacity (which determines column diameter) and the bubble-particle attachment rate and particle retention time (which determines column length). The most important factor in the scale-up of an air sparging system is the ability to produce small bubbles in both laboratory and full-scale columns. Other factors, such as energy consumption and maintenance requirements, should also be considered in the scale-up of bubble generators. It is also important to design a wash water distribution system that can properly control the froth stability and maximise the column throughput. Based on these criteria, a successful scale-up example is given.

Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. This analysis reveals that the relative power inefficiency of large ball mills is due to inefficient grinding of coarse (plus 4 mm) particles in these mills. A qualitative physical hypothesis is proposed to explain this behaviour. The results of the analysis can be used to scale up ball mill behaviour, using the mathematical models and techniques developed. A simpler ball mill scale-up procedure is also proposed, and its limitations stated. Laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine the average size distributions of single particles of different ores after breaKage. These experiments can distinguish between the different ores, and it is hoped to use their results to model and predict the grinding of different ores in ball Mills.

Following the accident in the Peterson section of Mufulira mine in September, 1970, a method had to be found of extracting up to 300 000 tonnes of ore per month from this area without inducing caving. Sandfill mining methods were chosen, necessitating a plant capable of producing both cemented and uncemented fill on a large scale. The paper covers the design and construction of this sandplant which is thought to be unique for its size, as it incorporates three 3 000 tonne capacity settled storage silos, a 500 tonne capacity cement silo, mixing tanks and a control room situated underground. The plant is designed to handle an aver- age of 440 tonnes per hour with a maximum of 660 tonnes per hour for limited periods, delivering either uncemented fill or cemented fill in proportions varying from 1:6 to 1:30. The instrumentation and equipment necessary to give one man operation of the plant is described and the fill mining methods now in use at Mufulira are briefly outlined.

An experimental investigation of the hydraulic cuttability of coal from the Theiss Dampier Mitsui mine near Moura, Central Queen land illustrated the ability of established cutting equations to describe the behaviour of the coal during cutting. The experimental equipment developed for the work proved reliable. The results of the experimental programme are consistent with accumulated experience from overseas.
