The legacy of underground coal mining may be a land surface which, in parts, may be unstable in the long term. A case study analysis has been undertaken to explain some of the hazards and how the risk may be assessed and managed.The Ipswich Coal Measures were extensively mined with shallow underground workings, which now underlie a number of suburbs in the eastern side of the city of Ipswich in south eastern Queensland. The area was subject to underground mining from the 1840s to 1997. In general, the mines were small, family-owned operations that were restricted by complex geology, interactions with neighbouring operations and ownership of surface facilities. The oldest available mine plans date back to the late 1890s.The residents in these mining areas have a long history of unexpected mining subsidence events. A level of risk management for property owners has been implemented by the Ipswich City Council, which requires a mining subsidence risk assessment to be submitted as part of building applications for property development in the areas suspected of having mining subsidence risk. The paper presents an overview of the mining industry of Papua New Guinea. Although the Bougainville problem is still unresolved, new mines like Ok Tedi, Misima and Porgera, which have come on stream during recent past, have raised hopes of sustained growth period in the industry. Kutubu Oilfield is also being developed in the Southern Highlands and the oil production has commenced from July 1992. Government revenue from these mega projects will increase five-fold during 1993 and 1994. A new mine which is being planned is the fabulous Lihir Deposit, on an island renowned to be full of gold. Gold occurs within a volcano which still contains high temperature ground water because the system which created the deposit is still geothermally active.In Papua New Guinea, problems of environmental management are far easier to tackle than those of a socio-political and economic nature involving compensation payments to the landowners and the distribution of royalties and taxes between the national and provincial governments. At the socio-political level, the country has not been able to resolve the problems of land rights versus mining rights. Whenever mining starts in a big way, it raises people's expectations to a very high level, which then becomes the focal point of dispute between landowners, provincial governments, national government and mining companies. A new system called 'Forum' has been tried to bring all parties together and son out the issues. The system appears to be working well in new mines like Ok Icdi, Porgera, Misima and Kutubu Oilfields.

The paper presents the results of chlorination of beneficiated rutile and struverite (a tantalum-niobium bearing, rutile type mineral in alluvial tin deposits) by carbon tetrachloride in the range 623¦K to 773¦K. The chlorination of rutile could reach near completion at 773¦K in about an hour. The process was found to follow a modified pore-blocking law, with the basic reaction constant K varying inversely with the particle size, so that the basic process may be a reaction under interface control (chemical control) as modified by the pore blocking effect. The pore blocking factors for the various experimental conditions were evaluated and the predicted curves showed good agreement with the experimental data. In the case of Struverite, a similar kinetic behaviour was observed but the chlorination process was relatively slower than that in rutile. It was also observed that in struverite, niobium got chlorinated faster, followed by tantalum and titanium, indicating a good possibility of separation by chlorination using carbon tetrachloride.

The first mining in Western Australia probably commenced some 40 000 years ago when Aborigines arrived and began quarrying stone for tools and weapons, and ochre for decoration. The earliest documented mining by European settlers took place in 1850 on a small lead vein in the bed of the Murchison River, reported by the explorer A C Gregory. However, it was the discovery of gold in the Kimberley region in 1885 that first drew wider attention to the State's mineral potential.

A mathematical model for estimating the liquid level in the hearth is presented. The analytical result was checked on a cold two-dimensional model and an additional boundary condition for the fundamental equation resulted. The applicability of the resultant equation was investigated on a cold model and a regression equation obtained for the average liquid level for Kashima No. 1 BF. Comparison of calculated and observed results were in fairly good agreement. It is concluded that the liquid level in the commercial furnace can be calculated from the measured values of pressure in the bosh and operating conditions.

Caval Ridge Mine (CVM) is one of the newly established open-cut coal mines of BHP in Queensland, where no tailings dam is planned to be built in order to minimise environmental impacts from mining activities. The waste streams from the Coal Handling and Processing Plant, including fine tailings dewatered by belt filter presses, coarse rejects, and mixed plant rejects, are co-disposed within waste dumps built with pre-strip and dragline spoils. Due to high rejects output (35 – 60% of feed) and low spoil to reject ratio (< 5) the large quantities of rejects bring significant geotechnical and operational challenges to CVM, which are exacerbated by increasing annual production rates and additional rejects from washing coal from an adjacent mine. Further in-house geotechnical review commenced in mid-2014 based on the initial geotechnical studies during the project stage of CVM between 2011 and 2013. The outcomes have enabled rejects disposal at CVM by constructing large belt filtered tailings cells, coarse rejects only dumps, and co-disposal of the mixed plant rejects at dump tip-heads. This paper presents the rejects disposal strategies at CVM from both technical and operational aspects. It also discusses future projects for belt filtered tailings moisture reduction including assessment of tailings clay mineralogy, as well as mixed plant reject co-disposal verification and optimisation.CITATION:Li, J, Payne, D and Hooi, H, 2018. In recent years the column flotation process has gained worldwide acceptance for processing various types of minerals under different circuit configurations. In an age when real prices of many mineral commodities are in decline and mining and labour costs are rising in real terms, it is more important than ever that concentration processes be not only efficient but also cost-effective. The column flotation process can give better metallurgical performance as well as involve lower capital and operating costs compared to conventional mechanical cells.This paper reviews the literature on columns and the effects of various column parameters on performance of the column flotation process. The history and principles of operation of the column flotation process are briefly discussed by way of introduction.

The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:

The Elura Orebody consists of a number of parallel, vertically oriented pipe-like structures of pyrite-sphalerite-galena mineralization located at the core of a structural dome. Concentric zoning of the mineralization into an outer Siliceous, intermediate Pyritic and inner Pyrrhotitic Zone has been previously recognized and is used in routine geologic modelling of the lead, zinc and silver grades.Statistical analysis of the metal grade distribution in the orebody has confirmed the importance of the mineralogical zones in the understanding of grade trends. The gradational nature of intra-zone boundaries, especially those related to the subjective definition of the Siliceous Zone, are apparent in the statistics.

This paper discusses the dewatering strategy adopted and the considerations and procedures required to incorporate a dewaterinq scheme into the Mt Whaleback mining operation. It concludes that in pit pre-dewaterinq has successfully allowed mining to progress below the standing water level with the minimum of disruption or radical change to the mining method. It is recognised however, that dewatering is not a static activity and there is a requirement for ongoing investigations and development. Pre-dewatering commenced in October, 1984. Purpose designed pumping trailers have been employed to minimise the loss of pump availability resulting from the frequent. need to remove and reinstall pumps when close vicinity blasts occur. To July, 1986, some 0.5 Mm' of groundwater had been pumped from the unconfined orebody aquifer. Mining has progressed to some 20 m below the standing water level without. any undue water associated problems. Ultimately, it is ,cheduled to extend some 300 in below the original water level in the West Pit. With the development of an increasing area of the mine below the standing water level, the influence of seasonal high intensity rainfall events, which had previously caused little concern, now need to be addressed. Pumping equipment has been designed to evacuate storm water at a rate consistent with mine production Considerations.

Rio Tinto Alcan has undertaken feasibility level assessments into the expansion of its bauxite mining operation in an area south of the Embley River in far north Queensland. The project has the potential to extend their Weipa operations by approximately 40 years.The construction and operation of two additional mineral ore processing plants are proposed for the South of Embley project. Golder Associates was engaged to develop and conduct modelling assessments of potential sources of water supply required by mineral ore processing.Two models were developed using GoldSim: a dam yield model and a water balance model. GoldSim is a graphical object-oriented modelling environment with a capacity to carry out dynamic probabilistic simulations. Originally developed by Golder, GoldSim has been applied successfully in a decision support role to a range of mine water management operations.The dam yield model was used to provide estimates of reliability and volume of annual water supply of several potential surface water dams. This information was then used to determine a hierarchy of water supply options for processing plant operations. The water balance model dynamically simulated the water demands of the two production plants and the consequential response in water supply, with respect to the timing and discharges provided by the various source options.Use of the model provided a preliminary operational tool to assist with water supply management decisions. Water quality issues required a blending of water from separate sources and attention paid to scheduling to ensure water supply through the dry season. The model also helped identify risks to water supply in the event of underperformance of one or more water supply sources. This allowed the operational rules to be refined to minimise those risks.The dynamic and stochastic modelling approach provided a method for identification of water supply issues susceptible to seasonal climate variability.CITATION:Weeks, S W, Hart, M and Fergus, G, 2013. The development of the SECV brown coal open cut at Loy Yang will require depressurisation of aquifers both within and below the coal seam sequence in order to maintain open cut stability. Prediction of future open cut dewatering requirements at Loy Yang Open Cut and evaluation of the regional consequences of dewatering has required development of a detailed hydrogeological model of the Loy Yang area. The complex stratigraphy of the coal seam and aquifer/aquitard sequences at Loy Yang have been analysed and integrated with the hydrogeological concepts developed from regional groundwater studies to formulate a realistic hydrogeological model as a basis for finite-element flow modelling.

Renison is a world-class ore deposit that has been mined for over 100 years. It currently has reserves of 5.06 Mt @ 1.88 per cent Sn and a projected mine life of 8.5 years. Recent advances in the geological understanding of the deposit have been associated with detailed structural and geophysical investigations accompanied with the discovery and exploitation of the Rendeep orebodies. Mineralisation is linked to the forceful emplacement of the Devonian Pine Hill Granite that resulted in a complex brittle (-ductile) deformation of the Eo-Cambrian host stratigraphy. Dilation jog development on the Federal-Bassett Fault in the Federal and Rendeep areas provided access for cassiterite-rich magmatic hydrothermal fluids responsible for carbonate replacement Mineralisation.

The outlook for suppliers of energy to the expanding economies of the Pacific Basin region is essentially positive, but particularly for exporters of high quality steam coal. This paper argues that economic growth in the Pacific Basin region has exceeded world economic growth for some years and that this will continue to be the case for the next decade at least. It looks briefly at the link between economic growth and energy demand and at the relationship between energy demand and the demand for electricity.Changing preferences in fuel mix for electrical generation in the region are noted and tentative forecasts made about variations in this mix. The pros and cons of various forms of fuel used to generate electricity are considered from the point of view of the consumer.

The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

The United States has more than 45 billion tons of economic coal reserves in seams above 10 feet thick and current underground production from thick seams represent less than three per cent of the total production. A tripling of underground production from thick seams is necessary within the next 10 years to meet U.S. coal production demands. An analysis of underground accident and production data is presented in the paper. A study of accident and injury distribution in different coal seam heights in the eastern and western part of the United States in seams ranging in thicknesses from 5 to 15 feet indicates that the seam thicknesses do not produce adverse impact on underground injury incidence. Accidents associated with roof falls and haulage account for about 70 per cent of underground mining injuries.

When coal mining first commenced in Australia, the principle objective was low cost production with development directed toward recovery of 'easy' coal. Future expans- ion of these early mines into major under- ground operations was neither envisaged nor planned. As the demand for coal grew, these mines were expanded to increase output. however, the absence of initial ventilation planning brought about ad hoc systems wh;ch required continual repair and upgrading. These systems proved satisfactory in the short term because the majority of undergrouni coal mining operations were carried out at relatively shallow depths where gas emission rates were low. By comparison, coal is now being won at depths exceeding 500 metres with a corresponding increase in gas flow from the working seams and adjacent strata. The following paper addresses, firstly, the planning and institution of a ventilation system in a mine where previous inefficiencies were many, and secondly, the value of pre- planning a mine ventilation system in the early stages of mine development, and the need to continually review and upgrade the plan to account for unforeseen ^hanges.

In March 2003, Rio Tinto Coal AustraliaÆs (RTCA) new Hail Creek open cut coal mine commenced operations in the Bowen Basin. Hail Creek is a two-seam strip mining operation utilising two 90 m3 draglines and a fleet of excavators and trucks to remove the overburden. All overburden at Hail Creek is blasted prior to excavation. The mine conducts its own drill and blast operations while engaging Dyno Nobel for the provision of explosives supply and loading truck (bulk explosives vehicle û BEV) services. This arrangement was favoured over outsourcing the entire blasting function to a contractor. Subsequent to a value engineering review, the mine set about developing and implementing a blasting operation that did not rely on the need to store bulk quantities of ammonium nitrate on site. There were advantages identified in doing this, in particular the reduction of capital expenditure required and reduced exposure to a number of recently introduced security requirements. This approach also makes sense operationally. The establishment of reload facilities for the BEV close to the blasting location, where turnaround times are kept to a minimum, increases the productivity of the BEV. For this strategy to be successful the logistics of ammonium nitrate supply into the blasting operations has to be well planned and thoroughly executed. This means a robust planning and forecasting arrangement needs to be established with the supplier and transporters of the ammonium nitrate. To date, 80 million bcm of overburden has been blasted at Hail Creek and each year the quantity of overburden requiring blasting is increasing. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study: evaluating the effectiveness to date of the strategy to conduct blasting operations without ammonium nitrate storage on site, and identifying whether there is a limit to which this strategy can operate after which the introduction of bulk ammonium nitrate storage facilities are necessary.

The South Junction deposit of St Barbara Mines Limited was discovered in 1989 by the geologists of Ross Atkins Mining.The deposit occurs in the lower part of the Gabanintha Formation of the Lukes Creek Group in the Mt Magnet -Meekatharra greenstone belt. Country rock is predominantly talc-chlorite schist. Gold mineralisation is associated with north-south shear zones, quartz-carbonate-fuchsite alteration of the ultramafic rocks and in particular close to deeply weathered quartz-albite porphyry.
