Barrick (Australia Pacific) Limited initiated a trial of Caterpillar’s Minegem autonomous loader technology in 2009 at the Kanowna Belle mine in Kalgoorlie. Autonomous loader technology offers the potential to improve loader productivity, reduce operating costs and improve safety through removing personnel from the mine operating environment. This paper discusses the implementation of the technology at the mine site, the data collected during the trial and quantifies the benefits of using automated loader technology in comparison with teleremote loader operation. The lessons learned from the trial and work planned for the future in respect of this technology is also discussed.

The majority of surface tailings storage facilities continue to employ sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition. Surface TSFs are typically sized and operated in a way to minimise the initial capital cost of the facility, driven largely by the net present value approach to accounting. This generally leads to too small a storage, too fast a rate of rise of the tailings, and difficulties in managing supernatant water. In turn, this results in wet and soft tailings deposits of high moisture content and low density, and the need for frequent and costly tailings dam raises. Further, such tailings deposits often do not facilitate closure and rehabilitation of the facility. Globally, there are on average over two failures annually of such tailings dams, resulting in loss of life, damage to infrastructure and environmental impact downstream, and the loss of company shareholder value and reputation. Recent high profile tailings dam failures are threatening the mining industry’s financial and social licence to operate.Among the physical processes that tailings undergo on sub-aerial deposition are beaching, hydraulic sorting down the beach according to particle size and specific gravity, settling, consolidation, and desiccation on exposure to the sun and wind. Beaching and hydraulic sorting have proved difficult to test at laboratory scale and difficult to model, and are best assessed in the field. Settling, consolidation and desiccation may be assessed at laboratory scale, but to date there has been an absence of tests to form the basis for the design and management of tailings deposition, and ultimate closure and rehabilitation. The paper describes recent advances in tailings testing methods, including a purpose-built slurry consolidometer that tests the settling and consolidation of tailings from a slurry consistency, simulating increasing tailings depth to about 50 m; and a purpose-built instrumented column that tests the settling, self-weight consolidation and desiccation of a surface layer of tailings, also from a slurry consistency. Selected test results from these two apparatus are presented in the paper, together with brief descriptions of how they may be used to better design tailings slurry deposition. Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. South Australia pioneered metal mining in Australia and was the main source of copper for several decades. Gold discoveries and mining also contributed significantly to the development of the Colony. Across the State can be seen the holes, the mullock heaps and, in some instances, the remnants of machinery of the past era. In this, the centenary year of the discovery of the Teetulpa goldfield, considered by some to he the most significant discovery of gold in the State, it is appropriate that we should present a paper on the history of gold mining in South Australia. South Australia has not been a major producer of gold with recorded production a little in excess of 15 million grams (15 t). This represents about 0.25 per cent of the Australian total and ranks last of the States of the Commonwealth. The outstand- ing feature of gold production in South Australia has been the succession of short periods of rela- tively high production immediately following a discovery, with payable dirt being quickly exhausted, a fact clearly illustrated by the graph of South Australian gold production (Figure 1).

Excavation of vertical and/or inclined shafts in the underground structures requiring careful design and planning. Raise Boring Machines (RBMs) are commonly used for excavation of shafts for different purposes such as ventilation, orepass, and human-material transportation. Proper selection and accurate performance prediction of RBMs are two main parameters affecting the cost estimation and planning/scheduling. Indentation test is one of the most preferred methods that can be used to predict advance rate of RBMs. This study aims at suggestion of new prediction model for instantaneous penetration rate of RBMs based on indentation tests. Different rock (core) samples (with different geological origins) are obtained from the raise boring application projects in Turkey; then, the indentation tests are carried out on them by using a real-life insert (button), which is used in reamerhead cutters investigated in this study. Finally, the statistical relationships between the field performance and the indentation indices are investigated. The study indicates that the brittleness index (the ratio of maximum applied force to corresponding penetration) can be used to predict instantaneous penetration rate of RBMs used in the vertical raise bored shafts excavating rocks having uniaxial compressive strength lower than 100 MPa.

Australians are at the forefront of exporting their mining expertise in a number of areas. Minerals education is just one example. The growing economies of Southeast Asia host some of the most prospective mineral fields in the world. Laos for example, hosts the world class Sepon and Phu Kham copper-gold deposits. The Philippines has the fifth largest global mineral resource inventory. These and other countries in the region lack the mining engineers, geologists and metallurgists required by international mining companies to ensure their operations are sustainable. This paper describes the author’s experience in working with mining schools in Southeast Asia and specifically the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Various strategies to ensure sustainability and lessons learnt are presented.

The devastating failure of Dam I at the Corrego do Feijao iron ore mine near Brumadinho in Brazil on 25th January 2019 left at least 270 people dead or missing. In the immediate aftermath of this event, many mining companies commenced reviews of their tailings and water storage facilities (T&WSFs), and Rio Tinto was no exception. Rio Tinto has an interest in over 250 T&WSFs across 47 sites in 13 countries as owner-operator, as managing JV partner, and through non-managed partnerships and other ownership arrangements; T&WSF experts from Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence visited the sites in order to complete Technical Risk Reviews of each facility. These reviews looked beyond the day-to-day operational aspects of T&WSF management, and the site’s compliance with local regulations and Rio Tinto’s internal D5 Standard – Management of tailings and water storage facilities, in order to provide a strategic, second line of assurance perspective. The reviews focused on design and construction; operational controls; risk control framework; and competencies and capabilities of personnel involved in the design, operation and closure of the facilities. Additional activities were carried out in parallel with these reviews, including the development of a consistent approach to dam break studies; the public disclosure of information on Rio Tinto’s tailings storage facilities and their management; and contribution to external programs such as the initiatives being co-ordinated by the International Committee on Mining and Metals. This paper provides an overview of the tailings and water storage assurance work undertaken by Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence Tailings Validation Taskforce to date; work that will continue to improve governance and assurance for all of Rio Tinto’s T&WSF.

When production targets are not being reached it is essential to determine what the operating problems are so that remedial action can be taken. It is also imperative that all persons who are part of the production stream within a mining operation know and understand what the operating difficulties and delays are so that corrective action is effective. This includes the supervisors, superintendents, planning team members and managers. A new approach recently adopted at Hilton Mine to help identify these operating difficulties has been to use short-term schedules and reports known as the Daily Shift Schedule Controls (DSSC), and the Daily Weekly Operating Reports (DWOR) respectively. These control elements have enabled management and supervisory staff to accurately identify labour inefficiencies and ultimately determine capital resources.

SMC Resources Limited is implementing a selective mining approach at the Hadleigh Castle mine, formerly operated by Aurora Gold Limited. The main ore zone has a length of 250 metres and dips at 40 - 45¦ to the south. Gold mineralisation occurs in a variety of quartz-sulphide lodes in sericitised granodiorite. Shallow dips, alteration intensity and mineralisation style combine to make mining relatively difficult. Previously unworked, high-grade, shallow dipping (30 - 45¦), narrow quartz-sulphide lodes within the hanging-wall of the deposit are also being selectively exploited. Annual production of 35 000 oz Au is forecast from 185 000 tpa ore grading 6.5 g/t Au over a currently envisaged mine life of six years. Operations completed to-date include deepening the decline and access development of the first two levels beneath the previous workings. Longhole stoping operations have commenced in the main ore zone with air leg stoping also underway in the hanging wall lodes.

The Horn Island gold and mineral field produced 194 kilograms of gold in the 4 years subsequent to its discovery in 1894, from an area of shallow workings 1.5 kilometres x 0.5 kilometres. Gold deposits in the adjacent Prince of Wales, Hammond and Possession Islands also drew attention at that time.These islands form part of a Carboniferous sequence of ignimbrites (Torres Strait Volcanics) intruded by the Badu Granite and minor volcanics within the Cape York-Oriomo Ridge. Gold is associated with the epithermal stages of igneous activity. Recent exploration has defined sub-horizontal zones of disseminated gold mineralisation in the sub-surface, as well as reserves in the outcropping sub-vertical structures mined in the past. Released estimates of 170,00 tonnes proven ore and 550,000 probable ore at 4 grams per tonne gold, have been established.Gold is mostly contained in quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias within the intensely propylitised medium grained granites which form the local host rocks within the coarse grained Badu Granite. Associated vein minerals are sulphides (primarily of lead, zinc and iron) and calcite. Various intrusions of porphyry, aplite and granodiorite occur through the prospect area.

The rationale for the design of the Emergency Egress (escape andentrapment) strategy for one underground metal mine has beenpreviously described (Brake, 1999). Two of the key conclusionsfor this mine, which is equipped with 30 minute oxygen-generating self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR), were the need to ensure no person is ever more than 750 m from an emergency refuge station (ERS) and that it could take up to eight hours to rescue workers from undergroundå. These conclusions were based on a number of considerations including the non-availability of a credible, æpersonalÆ entrapment procedure at the workplace, the duration of self-contained self-rescuers when used for travel, the need for rapid æclearingÆ of mine personnel to effectively and safely target mine search and rescue resources and the maximum time to either put a fire out, or to rescue affected personnel. As there is no Australian standard for refuge stationsç (or for self-rescuers), this paper follows with guidelines for the location and specification of both fixed (permanent) and relocatable Emergency Refuge Stations (ERSs) that may be applicable to other underground Australian metal mines.

High-accuracy, solid-state digital reference barometers have proven to be well suited to conducting underground barometric pressure surveys. The only problem is their expense; at least A$4000 each. For this reason, and because barometric pressure surveys are not a routine undertaking, very few mines have been able to justify the purchase of suitable instruments. The author knows of only three Australian metalliferous mines that own them.However, this may soon change given the recent development of low-cost, mass-produced miniature barometric pressure transducers. These transducers were developed to provide an altimeter function in the latest generation of smartphones. The main purpose of the inbuilt altimeter function is to allow the smartphone to be aware of its altitude when the global positioning system satellite signal is lost.This paper describes a prototype barometer that was constructed using one of the most accurate of the latest generation of piezo-resistive smartphone barometric pressure transducers. The prototype instrument was constructed for less than five per cent of the cost of a commercially available digital reference barometer. The prototype was subsequently tested against a reference barometer at the University of Queensland’s Experimental Mine to verify its accuracy and suitability for measuring pressure differences between underground survey stations.It is expected that the instrument’s low cost will pave the way for barometric pressure surveys to become more commonly used in mines. In turn, the resulting improvement in knowledge of major underground pressure losses should allow mine ventilation officers and engineers to optimise their ventilation systems and potentially reduce overall operating costs.An alternative option would be to use a barometer-equipped smartphone as a survey instrument, provided that its inbuilt barometer module is sufficiently accurate.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2015. In 2014, Arrium completed an optimisation program on its magnetite concentrator, enabling a reduction in the overall cost base of producing concentrate through an increased ability to treat a wider range of ore types, previously considered waste. The development was the culmination of four years of work, conducted in house by Arrium’s mining development group. The overall intent of the plant design focused on improving the concentrator’s ability to treat a wider range of magnetite ore types. Metallurgical analysis of these feed ore groups outlined a need for more grinding power if production quality was to be maintained and throughput increased. As such, a tertiary grinding circuit was designed which, alongside the rectification of key operational bottlenecks, would allow the plant to continue to produce concentrate at the required specification and rate. The technology chosen for the tertiary grinding application was the XT IsaMillTM, which is known for efficient fine grinding when compared to conventional ball milling. The transfer sizes between the existing comminution circuits were coarsened, allowed for the treatment of different ores at the required rates. The optimisation project was successfully completed in February 2014 after a three month commissioning phase. "Roasting of sulfide concentrates and refractory ores is an important process step in the production of metals and chemicals. Sulfides of iron, zinc, copper and other metals are oxidised with air between 600 and 1000¦C into metal oxides or sulfates and gaseous sulfur dioxide. Roasting of gold concentrates and ores is a typical processing step used to produce a porous calcine suitable for cyanide leaching. During roasting, elements posing problems are removed through: oxidation (carbon, sulfur, arsenic and antimony) or volatilisation (mercury, chlorides and tellurides, as well as arsenic and antimony).This paper focuses on the environmental aspect of roasting using fluidised bed technology. The approach is to show that roasting is an attractive solution for refractory ore pretreatment since, on the one hand, it is an efficient technique yielding high gold recovery rates, while on the other it is able to comply with current stringent international environmental regulations. In that respect, roasting is compared to alternative processes, ie pressure oxidation (POX), bio-oxidation (BIOX) and ultra-fine grinding (UFG). Roaster high gold recovery rates are ensured through roasting-leaching test work, which allows the derivation of respective roasting parameters that are easily achieved in an industrial plant. On the other hand, key elements of the roasting process are analysed, which make it an efficient and sustainable technology, ie the possibility for energy recovery, the removal of off-gas impurities during the different gas cleaning steps (handling of arsenic, mercury emissions and further hazardous dust and gas emissions) and the treatment of the SO2-gas in order to produce sulfuric acid, and finally the treatment of the effluent produced. The Mogalakwena North Concentrator of Anglo Platinum Operations was built with the capability to allow for future projected expansion. Several research groups, currently working with Anglo American on collaborative research over a range of projects, were brought in to review the existing operation, with a view to releasing some specific bottlenecks and providing specialist design input to the potential plant expansion.Based on a thorough review of the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and crushing circuit, a wide range of de-bottlenecking opportunities were identified. This was followed by a series of surveys to provide performance measurements and to model the circuit in detail. From this effort a full simulation of the plant has been developed, including updated models of the HPGR, crusher, bins and screens. These models have been implemented in the researchersÆ Model Development Kit (MDK) version of JKSimMet, and in a prototype dynamic simulator based on the Matlab Simulink software.The observations, measurements and simulations have provided guidance and quantified the benefits of some proposed circuit modifications. Based on these findings a number of upgrades are being planned, with the aim of ensuring full utilisation of the installed equipment. Over the last decade (2005–2014), a total of 439 significant deposits of gold and base metals were found in the world. Twenty (or 4.6 per cent) of these deposits were in the Pacific/South-East Asia (Pacific/SE Asia) region. In terms of contained metal, the region accounted for 1.6 per cent of gold and 13.8 per cent of copper found in the world. With regard to nickel and zinc/lead, the region’s contributions were insignificant.Over the same period, the Pacific/SE Asia region accounted for 6.6 per cent and 12.6 per cent of all gold and copper exploration expenditures in the world respectively. After adjusting for by-product credits, unreported discoveries and likely growth in resource, the unit discovery cost for the region was US$199/oz (compared to a world average of US$50/oz). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$55/oz and US$25/oz respectively. The region’s unit discovery cost for copper was US$0.036/lb (versus a world average of US$0.040). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$0.026/lb and US$0.008/lb Cu respectively.The region’s mediocre discovery performance doesn’t reflect its distribution of known mineralisation. Some countries within the region have a very good endowment per square kilometre.It is noted that the intensity of exploration (and resulting success) would be boosted if governments provided a more mining- and investment-friendly business environment and generated better precompetitive geological data sets (to identify new exploration targets and boost the country’s perceived mineral prospectivity). A multivariable regression analysis of a decade of data from the Fraser Institute’s mining company surveys found that a ten point increase in the Policy Perception Index or a 0.1 point increase in the Mineral Potential Index could boost (in the short term) exploration expenditures by 1.9 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively. Privately-owned companies considering investing in the resources sector can optimise their investment decisions by adopting a systematic technical assessment of acquisition assets, similar to the approach commonly adopted by public financial institutions and publicly-listed companies.Technical due diligence provides a process to identify key geological, mining, geotechnical, metallurgical, environmental and social risks and opportunities and determine the most likely business case and valuation of assets. Technical due diligence is commonly carried out in parallel with legal, commercial and financial due diligence, often involving the acquirer, to maximise the understanding of the investment.There are significant advantages in investors conducting a comprehensive technical due diligence, which typically involves site visits and project assessment to international standards by an independent, multidisciplinary team of experts. The outcomes provide the opportunity for the investor to make early, informed decisions and to understand and manage risks.Technical due diligence may be carried out at several stages: when considering and weighing up a number of investment options, prior to and during a transaction or immediately post-transaction. In the first stage, the outcomes will inform the choice of investment and, more particularly, whether there are any fundamental flaws in the projects being considered. In the second stage, due diligence outcomes can inform the level of investment and approach to risk management and planning. For many years, in numerous settings, the need for a language-fair and culture-fair assessment test has been identified as a significant issue for employment and selection for training of remote indigenous community members. Pivotal to the successful implementation and application of such a test is for it to gain the acceptance and trust of the local indigenous communities as a fair assessment and for it to provide organisations with an accurate predictive tool. However, when western tests have been used with indigenous groups, inherent language and cultural bias have had a significant negative impact in terms of community acceptance. These have also affected the accuracy of performance predictability. The Queensland Test was developed to overcome these problems. Originally developed for use in Papua New Guinea, it reduced training failures by 20 per cent. Later refinements were made and it was used with Aboriginal Australians. Since 2002, assessment tests have been used by the Freeport mine in West Papua to support their recruitment, selection and training processes for the local indigenous community, the Seven Suku Tribes. The initial process included the application of standard æwesternÆ assessment tests, which did not provide valid selection predictions, with community members and elders describing these tests as unfair and the organisation being concerned that the results were not accurate. A trial of the Queensland Test was conducted and a high correlation was established between the performance of FreeportÆs current Seven Suku employees as assessed by their managers and their Queensland Test results. Based on the results of this pilot the Queensland Test was successfully implemented as the primary selection tool for potential employees from these local indigenous groups. The testing materials and method gained community trust and support, with tribal elders describing the Queensland Test as a fair and suitable selection tool for their community members. Such results have sparked an interest within the Australian Mining industry, with similar results being reported from a recent trial. Following the Busang fiasco, more detailed guidelines were appended to the latest revision of the JORC Code released in September 1999 (JORC, 1999). Although the definitions and terminology essentially remained unchanged, the additional information in the guidelines has highlighted a number of issues for consideration by geologists undertaking computer-based resource estimations. The three main issues are:Data Integrity û details such as drilling and logging techniques, sampling procedures, assay tests, site visits, data recording and aggregation methods need to be considered. Geological Interpretation û is the Competent Person applying the appropriate software interpretation to the deposit in accordance with the regional setting. Are the correct computer-based tools being applied and are they producing the desired result (without compromise) to the satisfaction of the Competent Person? Modelling Technique û the importance of the relevant experience of the Competent Person not only in regard to the geology, but also with respect to the modelling algorithms and resource calculation methods of the computer software system involved. At the end of the day, it is essential that the Competent Person undertake a reality check on the resource estimation itself. They should also check that the borehole spacing is in accordance with the level of continuity for each critical parameter (such as structure, grade, impurities, etc) for which the resources are categorised.
