This paper reports the distribution of sulphur between iron and titanium in Fe-Ti-S alloys and in Fe-Ti-C-S alloys. The compound TiS was found, which exists as a separate phase at temperatures below 1200°C. Titanium in steels reacts with sulphur in preference to carbon. THE general relationship between sulphides and oxides suggests that titanium should form a sulphide having properties similar to those of titanium oxide. Specifically, titanium should form a sulphide having a high melting point, indicating a stable compound of low solubility in iron. In order for titanium to function as a desulphurizer or sulphur-fixing agent, it must form a stable sulphide. In order for titanium to be useful in steels as a sulphur-fixing agent, it must react with sulphur in preference to carbon; and to prevent red shortness, the sulphide formed must have solubility characteristics such that grain-boundary precipitation of a low melting phase be prevented. The terms desulphurizer and sulphur-fixing agent when used in this paper mean that titanium effectively ties up the sulphur as a stable sulphide of titanium and prevents the formation of FeS. The partition of sulphur between iron and titanium was studied first in a series of Fe-Ti-S alloys with carbon absent, and then in similar alloys with carbon present. It has been established1 a that titanium forms in Fe-Ti-S alloys a sulphide of undetermined composition which can be identified microscopically, and that the titanium-sulphur compound does not respond to sulphur printing. It has been suggested" that titanium acts as a sulphur-fixing agent, although little proof has been given. A report% f The Advisory Committee on Metals and Minerals summarizes the existing knowledge concerning substitutes for manganese in steels. Distribution of Sulphur Between lron and Titanium with Carbon Absent The alloys for this investigation were made by -melting Armco iron, metallic titanium, and iron sulphide in alundum crucibles in an induction furnace. The titanium was added after the other ingredients had melted. In these alloys it is recognized that some TiO, is present, since the melts were made in the air and since no other deoxidizing agent was used; therefore, some of the titanium was not available for union with sulphur. Thirteen ingots were made. Ingots 2 to 8 were cast in baked-sand molds; ingots 12 and 13 were cast in metal molds; and ingot 9 was allowed to cool in the crucible in which it was melted. All ingots were annealed at 900°C for 3 hr and were cooled slowly in the furnace. Subsequent information indicates that this anneal had no effect upon the titanium sulphide particle size, since the sulphide does not go into solution at this temperature. The ingots as-cast were approximately 8 in. long and % in. diam. The compositions of the eight ingots and the results of the partition of sulphur are recorded in Table I. Total titanium and total sulphur were determined by standard gravimetric methods. Sulphur, as iron sulphide, was determined by the evolution method. Boiling HC1 (1:4) liberates the sulphur from iron sulphide, but leaves the titanium sulphide practically undecomposed. A complete separation of titanium sulphide and iron sulphide cannot be made by digesting these compounds in dilute HC1 since titanium sulphide was found to dissolve slowly. The PGT uranium assay probe is a borehole tool developed by Princeton Gamma-Tech over the last several years. It has the ability to do an in-situ assay of uranium in the presence of any amount of disequilibrium. It has some advantages over coring including cost, speed of analysis, and accuracy. In this paper we would like to give a brief description of the measurement and then show some sample logs from South Texas. Uranium exploration and development is carried out primarily by gamma logging since uranium daughters are prolific emitters of gamma rays. The conventional gross gamma tool for uranium logging is limited in value because of the inability of this tool to distinguish uranium from its daughters and other naturally occurring radioisotopes, such as potassium and thorium. This problem becomes severe in cases of disequilibrium. Disequilibrium, in a geological context, is defined as the condition when the gamma radiations from the daughter products are being emitted in a location different from that of the parent uranium. In the decay chain of uranium almost all the gamma radiation emitted in the entire chain comes from the daughter product, bismuth-214. Bismuth-214 is separated from uranium by several long-lived isotopes that are chemically active and have different physical properties, often resulting in shifts in the location of bismuth- 214 relative to the parent uranium. In the United States orebodies exhibiting disequilibrium are a common occurrence and the use of a gross gamma log to delineate uranium orebodies can lead to errors. At present the solution to the disequilibrium problem is extensive coring followed by chemical analyses of the cores. There are several drawbacks in using this technique. First is the high cost of coring, the second is the fact that no results are available for days, or typically, weeks after the drilling is done. Thus for development work, coring and drilling must be done on a grid basis and many additional holes are cored to ensure that the entire orebody is mapped. Another disadvantage to cores is the fact that a small volume is sampled, the volume of the core itself. This leads to problems in the mapping out of the orebody when the ore de- posit is not very homogeneous. The PGT probe described in this paper is a new solution to the disequilibrium problem. Basically, the probe measures radiations that come almost directly from uranium itself. The first daughter of uranium, which is protactinium-234 (Pa-234), is only separated from uranium by a 24-day half-life and no disequilibrium problems build up in such a short time. The PGT probe measures the intensity of a one MeV gamma line emitted by Pa-234 and, using this information, calculates the concentration of uranium. The PGT probe is 24" in diameter and 12 feet long. The probe contains a microprocessor which passes the information to a larger minicomputer in the truck. All data is analyzed on site, and the results from a high speed printer are presented to the geologist. Data is also available on 9- track IBM compatible tape for further processing. The PGT probe output is linear with uranium concentration. The only correction factor is for borehole size, and that only becomes important in boreholes bigger than seven inches in diameter. Dead time is compensated in the probe itself and no problems have been encountered in ore zones up to several percent UjO8. In addition to the uranium assay, a conventional gross gamma log is plotted alongside. Grade thicknesses for zones above cutoff are calculated as well as disequilibrium factors. COMPARISONS During its commercial operation PGT logged a series of 18 holes that had been cored and assayed. All of the holes in this series were logged in normal operation by regular field operators. The time to log each hole was generally under an hour, and in typical operation a PGT logging truck will do between 7 and 8 holes a day. The results of the comparison of the PGT and the core assays are presented in a series of figures showing plots of the PGT assay, core analysis and gross gamma measurements. The first three figures show individual holes with the gross gamma plotted along with the core and the PGT assays. All three logs were from holes on the reduced side of a rollfront deposit in South Texas. In Figure 1 we see the two wings of the roll- front at 143 ft and 150 ft separated by a barren zone. The wings are well defined both by the PGT assay and the core. There is approximately a one foot shift which can be attributed to drilling errors. Restriction and proration of petroleum production have increased materially the difficulties attendant upon the estimation of reserves, particularly in large, "flush" fields. Such practices preclude the use of decline or other curves, from which, under capacity production conditions formerly prevalent, much could be learned as to the ultimate recovery to be expected from a given field or lcase therein. In restricted fields that would produce at many times the low rate allowed by the regulations in force if allowed to flow without restraint, one is forced to use other information than production performance to predict the volume of oil recoverable. Examples are: at Kettleman Hills, California; the Conroc, Van and East Texas fields, Texas; the Iowa field, Louisiana. It is beyond the scope of this paper to apply a definite method to the determination of the reserves in any actual field, therefore the discussion will be limited to a consideration of available methods and an enumeration of important factors governing the accuracy of such estimates. The problem is to determine not only oil in place but recoverable oil in place, for a given field or tract, which is complex and depends not only on the characteristics of the reservoir but also on the plan of development, the production allocation scheme, the rate of production and many other factors. Many data must necessarily be considered, weighed as to inportance, and assigned quantitative values. Estimates of recovery in prorated fields have been discussed by Brace', Shaw2, Snider3 and others. "OUR experience from time immemorial has been that the furnace sampler and analyst usually find one or two, and sometimes more, points less iron than the Lake Superior shippers, but, fortunately, their contracts are `iron bound'; and, generally speaking, analyses at this end are practically useless, for we are obliged to settle on basis figured out to a half dozen decimals, and, as a rule, without recourse in the event of flagrant discrepancies between the two analysts." The above is an extract from a letter received by the writer of this paper from the President of an iron company, discussing the question of sampling. It so well expresses the opinion of many blast-furnace owners and managers that it seems a suitable text for a discussion concerning the need of uniform methods of sampling. If all railroad cars were loaded the same, if all stock piles were the same shape, and if ore was received regularly each day, the problem of sampling would be comparatively simple. The conditions, however, vary widely at different places, and at the same place from day to day, and it is probably impossible to determine upon any one method of sampling which will apply at all times and in all cases. However, it would seem as though some general principles might be suggested which would tend to overcome these wide differences in samples of the same thing. The sampling of a cargo of iron ore begins at the breast of ore in the mine. The ore is sampled from the mine cars, from the stock piles, and from the railroad cars at the mines. At the lower Lake ports the ore is practically all sampled from the boat, occasionally from railroad cars. At the furnaces, the ore is nearly all sampled from railroad cars and occasionally from stock piles.

Fatigue tests were conducted on 2017-T4 alumium in alloy in an u1lrcthig.h vacuum of 2 x 10-lo Torr and in air. The vatio of vacuum-to-air faligue life for this ~malerial varied Jrom 3.5:1 at a strain of 2.5 X 1O-3 ill. pegr in. to 8:l at a strum of 3.3 x X ill. per 171. Sotlze pvelivtlinary data were also obtained on the faligue life of the alumirnum alloy in a dvy-nitrogen atmosphere. A dark deposit observed on the fracture surfaces of the aiv-tested specimens was identified as oxides of tr~angarzese and magnesium This observalion, and the close correlalion betaveen results obtained in vaCuum and dry-nitrogen environtments, tend to confirm that air stvongly influences the fatigue mechanism by a covrosion process. THE fatigue life of certain metals is known to increase when the atmospheric pressure is reduced. Gough and Sopwith1-2 postulated that this is due to a joint chemical and mechanical process operating in air at the surface of the metal with oxygen and water vapor playing significant roles. Wadsworth and Hutchings3 observed that aluminum is mainly affected by the presence of water vapor. Very little information is available on the fatigue properties of structural aluminum alloys in a vacuum environment. This report describes work performed on 2017-T4 aluminum alloy in an ultrahigh vacuum (2 x 10-loTorr) and in air. Some preliminary data are also presented on the fatigue life of the alloy in a dry-nitrogen environment. 1) EXPERIMENT 1.1) Test Material. The material tested was commerciaT 2017-T4 aluminum alloy which, in addition to aluminum, has an approximate composition of 4 pct Cu, 1 pct Fe, 0.8 pct Si, 0.5 pct Mg, 0.5 pct Mn, plus smaller amounts of other elements.* Some typical naturally age to a substantially stable condition. Specimens were then machined from these rods and ground to a No. 8 microfinish. In order to minimize variation in material characteristics, specimens were made from rods procured from the same lot. 1.2) Apparatus. The apparatus and test specimen used in the fatigue tests are shown in Fig. 1. The device utilized a single-cantilever beam with rotating-bending loading. A NUMBER of proposals have been made for the hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from flotation concentrates, but as yet no process has been developed that has demonstrated an ability to compete with the present smelting methods under ordinary conditions. The treat-ment of copper concentrates by hydrometallurgical methods is in general similar to that used in the present electrolytic zinc process and involves roasting, leaching with H2S04 solution, separation of solutions, control of impurities and electrodeposition. While many of these steps are simpler and more readily carried out for copper than for zinc, a number of inherent difficulties have prevented the general adoption of the process. To compete with smelting, the following problems must still be con-fronted, although many solutions for their have been proposed: (1) con-duction of the roast in such a way that leaching will give an extraction of copper comparable to that obtained by smelting; (2) regulation of the ferric iron content of the solutions during electrolysis; (3) disposal of the excess acid regenerated from the sulphates formed in roasting; (4) eco-nomical recovery of the precious metals from the leach residues. The roasting problem is largely one of preventing the formation of copper ferrites, CuO.Fe2O, and Cu20.Fe2O3, which are quite insoluble in dilute sulphuric acid. These ferrites are apparently formed' to a small extent even at low temperatures and above 650° C. their formation is rapid1. While it is possible to carry out laboratory roasts in such a way that less than 5 per cent of the total copper is present in the insoluble ferrite form, a closer temperature control is required than can readily be obtained in industrial furnaces. The flash" roasting effects and consequent high temperatures that occur as the calcine falls from hearth to hearth in the ordinary multiple-hearth roaster are probably largely responsible for the inevitable formation of some ferrites. The result is that in a commercial plant the extraction of copper would not average more than 90 per cent in a single 10 per cent H2SO4 leach. This is

Temperature distribution as well as position of the solidified front is solved by means of "heat balance integral", for the case of freezing a slab with time-dependent surface temperature. Numerical solutions for the cases of linear variation and exponential decay for surface temperature are given. Application also includes solidification of casting. An increased interest in the heat-transfer problem involving a change of phase has been developed in recent years. Practical problems include solidification of a casting, freezing and thawing of soil, ice formation, and others. Despite the importance of the topic, a literature search reveals relatively few solutions which may be extended to practical problems. Due to mathematical complexity, which comes from the nonlinearity of governing differential equations, exact analytical solutions which have been published are limited to a few cases with simple boundary conditions. Although numerical solutions of these problems have become available after highspeed digital computers were introduced, lack of simple and general methods of programming for computation makes this approach impractical. The case of the semi-infinite slab with constant surface temperature was solved in the 19th century. In honor of Neumann, who first found an analytical solution, this kind of problem is generally referred to as the Neumann solution. As has been shown in Fig. 1, the problem to be analyzed is the freezing of a semi-infinite region (x > 0) which is initially liquid at the melting temperature with the surface (x = 0) maintained at time-dependent temperature. This analysis can be applied to the study of many casting processes where most of the heat removal is essentially unidirectional. "Heat balance integral" which has been used by Goodman1 is employed in this analysis. The concept of "heat balance integral" is to define a quantity, d(t), called the thermal layer. Beyond this thermal layer, for all practical purposes, there is no heat transfer, and the region is at the equilibrium temperature. "Heat balance integral" is obtained by integrating the conduction equation with respect to the space variable over this thermal layer d(t). Choosing some plausible temperature distribution, usually a polynomial or a finite trigonometric series in the space variable, this integral equation becomes an ordinary differential equation, with time as the independent variable, which can be solved by classical methods. The thermal layer and "heat balance integral" are equivalent, respectively, to the boundary-layer thickness and the momentum integral in hydrodynamics. A modern account of Prandtl's concept of the boundary layer and von Karman's momentum integral may be found in Ref. 2. Although the problem considered here has been limited initially to uniform melting temperature, the present method is equally applicable to the case with arbitrary temperature distribution in the liquid. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The physical situation and coordinate system used in the problem to be analyzed are shown in Fig. 1. Notations used are listed in the table of nomenclature. THE long-hole drill has been used for prospecting underground in the tri-State district for several years, and its value has been pretty thoroughly proved. An attempt was made to get a statement of their experience with the machine from all the operators who were known to have used the machine. The majority of them replied to the questionnaire so that this paper is practically a summary of the experience of the district, together with some practical details taken from the experience of the Eagle-Picher Lead Company. When the drill was first used by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co., it was put in low headings and was mounted on a cross-arm supported by two drill columns. This was found to be a rather awkward method of mounting, because fairly long moves were made and the same drill columns could not be used on any two successive set-ups. The machine was later moved to a mine with high headings so that this type of mounting was found to be impractical. A heavy tripod was tried and found satisfactory, provided care was taken to see that the set-up was solid. The Evans-Wallower Lead Co. and the Century Zinc Co. report using the double post set-up, but the headings are low in these mines. The Commerce Mining St Royalty Co. first used the double-post mounting in high headings by cutting a niche in the wall and setting the post in it. This proved to be a slow and expensive method and was later abandoned for the tripod. The Federal Mining & Smelting Co. has used a tripod throughout its operations. Great care must be taken in using the tripod to see that the set-up is solid. Wherever possible it is advisable to sludge in the legs and let them set a short time before the machine is put into use. Where high bottom is encountered the Eagle-Picher operator found it advisable to drill jack- hammer holes in the bottom and drive the legs into them.

I would like to ask Bob Merrill whether he considers that horizontal concave curvature of a slope has any stabilizing effect, such as Jenike 1 suggested several years ago. The stabilizing effect is due to the restraint offered to radial movement by the curvature. We found in laboratory tests that if we constrained the rock with the same stresses as those measured in the pit then it would sustain a maximum stress about two or four times greater than when the same rock type was unconstrained. We are therefore definitely of the opinion that a constrained situation in a slope is favorable towards stability.

During the past year, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an investigation of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) to supplement the work described in previous publications.' The present paper gives results of the first part of this work, which was a laboratory investigation of the properties of typical combustibles used in L.O.X., and the relation of these properties to the absorption and retention of oxygen by the explosives and their explosive characteristics. No attempt will be made to describe the development of liquid-oxygen explosives, because this phase of the subject has been well covered.2 The L.O.X. cartridge consists of a paper wrapper filled with an absorbent combustible material that is saturated with liquid oxygen by soaking it therein. After saturation, the cartridge is removed from the liquid and fired with fuse and cap, or electric detonator, in a manner similar to other explosives. Certain types of cartridge may be detonated with fuse alone, requiring no cap to initiate the detonation. ' By suitable variation of the nature and density of the combustible, cartridges having a wide variety of explosive characteristics may be made.

MONDAY, Feb. 21, evokes memories of the Silver Corridor at the Waldorf to be recalled and reflected upon for time to come when thoughts drift to the Annual Meeting of 1944. Crowded though it was, on occasion there lurked in the mind's eye a vision of what might have been had the 2886 persons who put in an appearance at one time or another milled around in the lobby of 29 West 39th Street. Some confusion resulted from difficulty in locating meeting rooms, but for the most part everyone found what he wanted. The usual bulletin board of members registered was missing this year and rumor has it that tile Waldorf didn't approve. Registration broke all previous records with many a busy engineer realizing that the program had something to offer that would be of use in his particular job. It might be noted here that "Arpad" co-operated nicely, previewing spring days on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday; Tuesday was a bit damp.

The Globe Mining District is in the southeast central part of Arizona, in Gila County. Globe, with a population of about 7000, is the terminus of the Arizona Eastern R.R., a branch line 130 miles long that connects with the Southern Pacific R.R. at Bowie. In 1874, prospectors crossing the Pinal Mountains from the west located what is generally known as the Old Dominion mine. For several years, it attracted little attention, because of the greater interest aroused by the discovery of high-grade silver ores in some of the foothills northeast of Globe. About six years later, the prospector turned his attention to the abundant copper ore revealed by surface workings along the Old Dominion vein, and, in 1884, the Old Dominion company erected two 30-ton furnaces. From 1888 to 1893, the Old Dominion company is said to have maintained an average annual production of about 8,000,000 Ib. of copper. Until Dec. 1, 1898, all supplies had to be freighted into Globe by wagons and the mines of the district operated intermittently because of high expenses, but with the advent of the railroad the Old Dominion company continued to be a large and steady producer. In the Globe district, the production of copper far exceeds in importance that of any other metal. There are four operating companies along the Old Dominion vein and the total annual product of these properties for 1923 was about 45,000,000 lb. of copper. The unit size of the mineral tracts in the district is the regulation mining claim, 600 ft. wide by 1500 ft. long, and all ownerships are held in fee. Globe is 3600 ft. above sea level, and lies between the Apache MOUntains to the east and the Pinal Mountains to the west. The principal drainage of the district is northward through Pinal creek into the Salt River. The general slope from the high point along the vein, where the Superior & Boston mine is, to Pinal creek, where the Old Dominion mines are, is about 250 ft. to the mile. Geology The oldest rocks in the district are pre-Cambrian crystalline schists known as the Pinal schist, which are the basement upon which all the later rocks were deposited. The Gaudin-Meloyl equation for the size distribution of fragments resulting from single fracture is where y is the mass fraction of material smaller than size x, and x, and r are parameters to be determined from the experimental data. In physical terms, r is associated with the number of active flaws in a particle of characteristic dimension xo . The special attribute of this equation is its emphasis on the coarse size region of a distribution. There are various procedures2-5 for obtaining the parameters in Eq. 1, but a simple graphical method is awaited. This situation contrasts sharply with that in the cases of the familiar Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and Rosin-Rammler equations.6 The purpose of this note is to present a method based on a procedure7 which has been successful in several other applications.8-13

The Mogollon mining district is in the southwestern part of New Mexico near the southern end of the Mogollon range, from which the district takes its name. The town of Mogollon is but 371/2 miles in an air line northeast of Clifton, Ariz. The air-line distance from Silver City is 521/2 miles and from Tyrone, 57 miles. Supplies are transported by motor truck from Silver City. The distance by road is 75 miles, half of which is an improved highway of modern construction. Transportation has always been a large item of expense in carrying on operations in the district. Valuable ore is said to have been discovered in the Mogollon Mountains as early as 1870 but the first regular prospecting was carried on in 1875, by James C. Cooney, a sergeant from Fort Bayard. His discovery of rich silver-copper ores in the region of Mineral Creek led to the establishment of the Camp of Cooney. Remote from any settlements where there was a semblance of law and order, and harassed by the Apaches, development was slow and nearly 10 years elapsed before the village of Mogollon was established on Silver Creek. Prospecting in this section of the district had disclosed the outcrops of several promising veins containing silver-gold ores. Among the early claims located were the Last Chance, Top and Confidence, on what has proved to be the most productive vcin in the district. To the end of 1922, the Last Chance and Top claims had produced approximately 600,000 tons of ore and nearly 200,000 tons had come from the Confidence group of claims. The total value of the ore produced from this vein alone has amounted to about $9,600,000 in silver and gold. The Fanney vein was developed later and during its most active period of production contributed more than half of the output of the district. Other important locations, though far less productive than the above, were the Maude S, Deep Down, the Deadwood and the Pacific.
