Y.-In 1913 I presented a paper before this society on Grain Growth, and at that time it seemed to me that the only explanation for grain growth was that of critical strain. I do not think I published the photographs at the time, but I made some experiments on the effect of stretching sheets of metal. This allowed for fairly accurate determinations of the amount of cold deformation, At the time I worked-with silicon steel because one could see the change in grain growth with the naked eye. I stretched about 10-samples from 0.5 per cent. to 10 per cent., and, after heating to 1,050° C., I found that the maximum grain growth occurred at about 2 ½ per cent. cold deformation. This I designated "the critical strain" for maximum grain growth. About a year ago I talked with Prof. Jeffries, who explained to me his ideas of grain growth. It occurred to me that it would be a very easy thing to check the strain hypothesis against the strain and temperature hypothesis, if we took a certain number of these strips, strained exactly alike and heated to different temperatures; in that case the maximum grain growth ought to appear at a different percentage of deformation for each temperature. These experiments showed that there was, as Mr. Jeffries shows in his present paper, a decrease in germinative temperature with increased cold deformation. The samples were stretched from ½ to 8 per cent. and heated for 10 hr. in hydrogen. Samples were introduced into a furnace previously heated to temperature. A maximum grain growth was obtained at 5 per cent. deformation, when heated to 750° C.; at 2 ½ per cent. when heated to 800' C.; at 1 1/4 per cent., if heated at 950°C.; and at 5/8 per cent.. when heated at 1,100° C. This shows very clearly that the germinative temperature decreases with the increase in cold deformation. The growth was very much more marked, however, at the high temperature, i.e., the grain grew more rapidly and attained a much larger size than at lower temperature. A GREAT number of hypotheses has been advanced to explain the complex phenomena that are encountered in flotation. In the days of bulk-oil flotation, when a large quantity of oil was employed, it was observed that the oil-mineral aggregate floated above the ore-pulp because of its lesser density. With the advent of froth-flotation this phase of the theory had to be modified to take into account the presence of air bubbles. The reason why the mineral-bearing froth of today rises to the top of flotation cells is, of course, because the air-mineral aggregate, with whatever reagent may be associated with it, is lighter than the pulp. In an attempt to explain froth-flotation the fact has been emphasized that certain minerals are wetted and therefore remain in water; while others are not wetted and therefore become associated in preference with air. Such an "explanation" does not explain facts, it merely states them; for instance, it does not explain why minerals are wetted under some circumstances and not wetted under others. Going somewhat further, the wetting or nonwetting of minerals by water has been ascribed' to differences in the angles of contact between oil droplets and mineral surface at the surface of the minerals. This explanation, however, was abandoned when soluble flotation reagents came to replace the so-called "insoluble" reagents. Another theory, sponsored about 10 years ago by Ralston,2 involves the effects of electric charges at the surface of the minerals particles and air bubbles. This theory, unfortunately, was not developed as fully as it seems desirable.

IN western Argentina, in the Province of Mendoza and the Territory of Neuquén, there is a series of solid bitumen deposits which are claimed to be the most extensive in the world. In a linear belt 500 km (311 miles) long, roughly paralleling the axis of the Andes but occupying a variety of positions with respect to the orogenic structures, more than 100 outcrops have been reported. Approximately 70 of these have been prospected, and some mining has been planned or attempted for about half this number. Limited tonnage, high sulphur content, inaccessibility, labor shortages, and disastrous fires have taken a heavy toll among these operations, and in 1947, only 4 deposits were being actively mined, but 8 more were being explored and developed with a view to placing them in production. Inasmuch as these deposits are currently yielding a substantial fraction of Argentina's limited domestic supply of solid fuels, a brief account of the deposits and of the small industry based upon them will provide a commentary on Argentina's fuel problem. CHARACTER OF SOLID BITUMENS The solid bitumens of Mendoza and Neuquén are petroleum derivatives, as is indicated by the following ultimate analysis: [CONSTITUENTS PER CENT Hydrogen6.8 Carbon82.4 Nit.rogenI.6 Oxygen2.7 Sulphur2.2 Ash4.3 100.0] In physical appearance they bear a close resemblance to coal and are commonly called carbón. Their specific gravity has an extreme range of 1.10 to 1.777 in 36 samples weighed, but the average is between 1.14 and 1.24. The material is black, lustrous to dull, with blocky to sub-conchoidal fracture. Though brittle, the purest material is softer than anthracite and exhibits slightly more cohesion. This bituminous material is generally known as asfaltita or asphaltite, but definitive chemical studies indicate that the term asphaltite or grahamite can be applied correctly only to the exceptionally pure material of the Auca Mahuida district in Neuquén. Some other name should be used for the chemically variable bitumens found in all other districts, and the designation "asphaltitic pyrobitumen" has been proposed by Carlos A. S. Piscione.1 At the present time these bitumens, are finding favor as solid fuel and as a gas-producing medium. They yield heat values of 8650 to 9750 cal,2 or 14,500 to 16,750 Btu per pound, and in consequence of their excellent heating qualities and the scarcity of imported coal, they are marketed as far away as Buenos Aires at a price of go to 95 pesos, or approximately $22 to 23, per metric ton. In burning, the material swells and decomposes into solid, fluid, and gaseous fractions which burn violently though nonexplosively. Its combustibility has been responsible for disasters and virtually complete destruction at Mina La Esperanza and Mina Santa Marta, and for minor mishaps elsewhere, as at Mina Escondida in August 1947.

Trona ore at the Westvaco, Wyo., mine of FMC Corp. has been obtained by room-and-pillar methods since the mine began operation. The flat- lying, 10-ft thick trona (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H2O) is covered by 1500 ft of weak shale and sandstone, and extraction of pillars on the retreat quite often throws large amounts of weight onto development workings. Weak shales in the roof and floor fail rapidly, and the mine ribs slough to such an extent that mining often becomes very difficult. When this occurs, efficiency goes down, costs go up, and the risk to men and machinery increases greatly. Difficult mining conditions in the early '60s forced a re-evaluation of all presently known mining techniques in bedded deposits. Many room-and-pillar mining plans were compared with the system in use at that time, but none of them offered a better solution to the roof control problem. Longwall techniques were also seriously considered, but machinery was not available that would cut the hard trona seam and still maintain the productivity obtained from room-and-pillar sections. However, since roof control in the longwall methods appeared to be more satisfactory than that found in room-and-pillar techniques it was believed that a new technique using the longwall principle and based on rock mechanics should be tried rather than previously known pillaring methods.

IN the preceding chapter on thermochemistry and the reactions in and between metal and slag phases and in the following chapter on fuel combustion the main emphasis is placed on the equilibrium or "static" conditions. This equilibrium viewpoint is not concerned with the rate of change in the process or with the mechanisms or paths followed between initial and final states. The questions of just "how it works" and "how fast" belong to the kinetic aspect of any process; their answers are helpful in speeding up or slowing down and thus controlling its operation, and also in understanding its limitations. Any treatment of kinetic factors in the open hearth such as is attempted here and in Chapter 22 must at present be largely qualitative and incomplete. We are only beginning to get quantitative data on rates of reaction and diffusion at high temperatures, as indicated in Chapter 15. Empirical data in the literature on furnace operating rates do not help much to illuminate the details of gas-flow patterns and the complexities of heat flow in the many parts of the furnace system. This chapter is intended to give the reader an introduction to the problems of the flow of gases through the furnace system and the flow of heat in this system. An adequate discussion would require several times the space available here; it is possible here only to outline a few fundamentals and to indicate some of the conditions of heat and gas flow peculiar to the open hearth. Several good general treatments of these subjects may be found in the literature (see references at the end of the chapter). For the designer of open-hearth furnaces, the principles of gas flow are of paramount importance. They are also important to the operation of the process, at least to the extent of a general qualitative picture of the movement of gases in the system. The phases in Cr-Fe-Mo alloys have been investigated with homo-genization, aging temperature, composition range, and alloy addition as variables. Metallography, three X-ray methods, and hardness were used as methods of study. The behavior of s, M23,C8, and Z phase are reported for cornpasition range 60 pct Cr-15 to 25 pct Fe-15 to 25 pct Mo-<0.005 to 0.36 pct C with aging at 1400º to 2000°F. With 2 pct Ti, Tic and TiC-TiC are formed; with nitrogen Cr2N. THE recently developed class of chromium-base heat-resistant alloys shows appreciably higher strength than commercially used high temperature alloys. However, further developmental work is required to impart needed shock resistance and some degree of room-temperature ductility to these alloys. Extensive exploratory work on chromium-base alloys was begun in a program initiated by the War Metallurgy Committee of the National Defense Research Council at the Climax Molybdenum Co. in the early part of 1942.&apos; Alloys were sought for gas-turbine blades for use at 1600°F. A minimum of 5 pct elongation in the stress-rupture test was a requirement. From the Climax work, ternary alloys of chromium, iron, and molybdenum appeared to show the greatest promise as materials for gas-turbine blades. The composition line in the ternary diagram joining the 60 pct Cr-15 pct Fe-25 pct Mo and 60 pct Cr-25 pct Fe-15 pct Mo alloys was indicated as representing the most useful combination of strength and ductility.&apos; Strength increased while ductility decreased as molybdenum was raised in this composition range.&apos; The 60 pct Cr-15 pct Fe-25 pct Mo type alloy was thought to have the most suitable properties for gas-turbine blades.&apos; Concurrent with the study reported here, other investigations were being made on Cr-Fe-Mo alloys. The liquidus temperatures on a series of low carbon, ternary alloys were being determined, and isothermal sections drawn at 2370°, 2010°, and 1650°F (1300°, 1100°, and 900°C).2 Also, various methods of preparation and some mechanical and physical properties of chromium-base alloys, particularly the 60 pct Cr-15 pct Fe-25 pct Mo type, were being investigated., At the inception of the present program, only a limited study had been made of etchants for developing the microstructures of chromium-base alloys; X-ray analysis of the microconstituents had not been made. A review of the literature revealed that no phase-diagram work had been reported on the Cr-Fe-Mo system. Scope of Work The work on chromium-base alloys includes the following: 1—The development of etching methods for differentiating between the microconstituents; 2—The identification of microconstituents by X-ray diffraction methods; and 3—A comprehensive metallographic and hardness study after various heat treatments. The phases were studied by three standard X-ray techniques: 1—The block-sample focusing-camera method; 2—The powder-diffraction method on elec-trolytically separated residues; and 3—The powder-diffraction method on cold-worked aggregate samples. The results by the first two methods were correlated with the metallographic data. The third method was used largely to study conditions approaching equilibrium, since cold working prior to heat treating accelerated precipitation. ENACTMENT of Public Law 290 by the 78th Congress authorized the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to conduct an experimental program to develop the technology for obtaining oil from oil shale. In adopting and later extending this legislation, the Congress recognized the impending necessity of supplementing ground petroleum reserves with synthetic fuels. Under the provisions of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines, among other things, was charged with the responsibility of developing mining techniques, methods, and equipment for mining the oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

THERE is a wide difference of opinion among rifle experts in the matter of barrel steel, and the relative importance to the life of the barrel of the steel&apos;s composition, heat-treatment, structure, and physical properties. In order to promote discussion, which it is hoped may lead to the discovery of the source of &apos;some of the traditional beliefs on the subject, the results of some tests are presented here, with data on heat-treating, physical tests, and erosion. The detailed metallographic study of this steel is given in another paper.1 The conclusions from these tests should be capable of wider application than their direct bearing on the barrel-steel problem. The Government specifications for barrel steel for model 1903 rifle (Springfield) call for carbon 0.50 to 0.60 per cent., manganese 1.00 to 1.29 per cent., silicon under 0.25 per cent., sulfur under 0.06 per cent., phosphorus under 0.08. per cent. The minimum physical requirements are: Tensile strength,- 110,000 lb. per sq. in. (7733 kg. per sq. cm.); yield point, 75,000 lb. per sq. in (5472 kg. per sq. cm.); elongation, 20 per cent.; reduction of area, 45 per cent. Material fulfilling these requirement&apos;s gives practically no failures when proof-fired, with charge of 70,000 lb. per sq. in. pressure, which is 40 per cent. in excess of the service charge. The turning and drilling operations show up any seams or laps such as accidentally occur even in- the best heats of open-hearth steel, so that&apos; faulty stock is practically all eliminated before proof-firing. These physical requirements are met either by rolling billets at, a proper temperature clown to the form of tapered barrel blanks or by heat-treating bars that have been upset to enlarge the breech section. The transformation temperature of this steel, on heating, is around 1350° F. (732° C.), varying somewhat with the composition and the rate of heating. HAVING promised you to write concerning the nature of ores in particular, I must tell you some general facts, especially those concerning the places, kinds, and manner of their existence as well as the tools which are used. However, you must know that according to good investigators these ores are found in many parts of the world. They show themselves almost like the veins of blood in the bodies of animals, or the branches of trees spread out in different directions. Indeed, careful investigators of minerals, wishing to show by analogy how ores are located in mountains, have drawn a large tree with many branches, planted in the middle of the base of a mountain. From its principal trunk extend various branches, some thick, some slender, exactly like real trees in mature forests. They think that these grow and enlarge continually and draw themselves toward the sky, ever converting into their own nature the most disposed adjacent materials so that finally the tips arrive at the summit of the mountain and emerge with clear sign, sending forth, in place of leaves and blossoms, blue or green fumosities,* marcasites with small veins of heavy mineral, or other composition of tinctures. From these things, when they are found, it is possible to make certain inference that such a mountain contains ores, and as the signs are more or less, so are the minerals plentiful and rich or poor. For this reason the prospectors for these things take heart according to the manifestations that they find, and with hope and certainty of profit they take all possible pains to mine with skill and expense those things that the signs have indicated. Often there are ores of such a kind and quality that they raise a man in wealth to the skies. The industries engaged in winning minerals from the earth, because of their widespread dissemination, are faced with perhaps as wide a variety of labor-management problems as may be found in any other broad sphere of productive activity. Those problems are continually increasing in volume and complexity, and management has become aware of their growing importance. For the past quarter century at least, labor-management problems have largely been union-management problems. During this period tremendous assistance has been given labor unions through legislation and administrative and political action. In the United States, legislation favorable to unions has come about in the form of the now defunct National Industrial Recovery Act; the Wagner Act, most of which has been carried forward in the Taft-Hartley Act and the Landrum-Griffin Act; the Norris-La Guardia Act, the Wage and Hour Law, the Walsh-Healey Act, and others. The result has been to transfer from the hands of management to those who direct the affairs of the unions a large share of control over the industry and to hamper in many ways the remaining control left to management. In the United States there are many examples of the power of unions to injure whole industries seriously without regard to the interests of management, the employes, or the public. During 1958 and 1959 revelations of corruption and coercion in labor unions made before the McClellan Committee of the U. S. Senate generated considerable public sentiment in favor of legislation to protect the interests of employes and the public. However, the resulting legislation, the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959 (Landrum-Griffin Act), demonstrated quite clearly that the political power of the labor union leaders was adequate to prevent adoption of effective measures in this field.

Since 1915 many papers and books have covered industrial applications of X-rays from various angles. Two of the more recent are a paper by Fink and Archer, which describes in detail the technique of radiography, and a paper by Clark2, which embraces the whole field of X-ray metallogmphy. This paper, therefore, is confined to work of the X-ray Laboratory of the Western Electric Co., which naturally divides into two categories: radiography and diffraction patterns of various types. Radiography Radiography is the field in which the application of X-rays has had most general appeal among the industries which produce or use metals and alloys. Equipment permitting the examination of heavy sections of metals less permeable than aluminum or other light alloys requires apparatus capable of generating hard X-rays over a considerable period of time. The equipment used in the work presented in this paper is practically identical with that described by Fink and Archer in their paper on radiography in industry and is easily capable of penetrating 1/8 in. of lead. Radiography is used in two major groups of problems: (1) in the development of cquipment and tools and (2) in studies of materials. So far there has been no instance in which the use of radiography for routine inspection is justified. This is partly due to the fact that the manufacture of telephone apparatus involves the production of many identical parts by standardized procedures and equipment that has had development and trial before being put on a regular production basis. It is during this stage of development of equipment and tools that radiography has been used to particular advantage.

An article on the subject of electrolytic zinc no longer needs to be preceded by an apology. The production of zinc by electrolysis is past the laboratory stage and has become an economic factor of considerable importance in the total production of zinc in the United States. The various methods of procedure to be followed fa the greatest economy of manufacture are fairly well known, consequently a detailed description of any method is no longer necessary or desirable. In this paper I shall endeavor to lay down some of the governing conditions in this industry, the relation of methods to ore deposits, freight rates, and sources of power supply. Power Points Assuming for a moment that, for the present at least, the electrolytic production of zinc will be confined to Those localities having developed water power, a glance at these powers so developed in the United States, with their relation to known zinc orebodies of economic size, will not be without interest. Northwest In the Northwest we have water powers, developed and undeveloped, . in Washington and Montana. These must, of course, bear a close relation to the rapidly growing zinc production of the Coeur d&apos;Alenes and of the Butte districts. In general, the power of the territory in question is relatively low-priced, at least as compared with the cost of developing power from coal, and the near neighborhood of large bodies of more or less complex zinc ores makes these water powers of more than usual interest. The same remarks may be applied equally to the developed water powers of the Canadian side of the line in the Northwest, where we have again commercially available complex ore deposits such as are being exploited today at and near Trail. In previous publications1 it was shown that a scalar model of any weighty structure, where the stresses produced are mainly due to gravitational forces, will behave similarly to its prototype if the model and prototype material are the same and the model is placed in a centrifugal field of force (substituted for the gravitational field) which has been increased in the same proportion as the linear model scale is decreased. This principle is now being applied to a study of the behavior of mine structures in an attempt to determine the laws that control them. The importance of using models as a means of solving mining problems has been discussed previously, yet it may be well to reiterate here that this method of research and type of solution have been productive of far-reaching results in other engineering fields, notably those of hydraulics and aerodynamics. Model research is a comparatively cheap and time-saving method of checking practical experience. Up to the present time the best guide to what will happen underground has been the judgment of the man who has observed most and been longest acquainted with the local conditions. His experimental work underground is limited by the elements of cost, time and danger, while failure is seldom permissible. In a model, as in a test tube, all elements that affect the solution of a problem are under definite control. Each element may be varied independently at hill and its effects noted. Experimental work on a small-scale model may therefore be performed at a comparatively small expenditure of time and money, instead of on a full scale in the mine, where the cost, time, and danger elements are necessarily great. The experiments described in this paper are to be considered as part of a progress report and a continuation of Technical Paper 425. One object of the research program is to make each experiment point the way for further research on that particular phase of the general problem. THIS paper is not an announcement of the successful conclusion of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation&apos;s pacos-pyrite problems, but merely a description of the commercial-scale, intermittent-roasting operations conducted by the writer, J. H. Lucas and others of the staff. It was prepared by request, for presentation at the February meeting of the Institute. The results obtained in Peru confirm the 1-ton-a-day experiments completed about three years ago at Kearny, N. J. by C. C. Gordon and Mr. Lucas, where it was first demonstrated that a mixture of about 80 per cent. pacos ore with 10 per cent. pyrite ore and 10 per cent. salt could be roasted intermittently in a small 1-ton-a-day Holt-Dern furnace without extraneous fuel, producing porous calcine that could be leached rapidly. Mr. Keep and his staff, by successfully introducing improvements in the construction of the commercial furnace and in their handling of material, have established beyond doubt a low cost for roasting. The other steps in the process of treating pacos and pyrite ores have not as yet been demonstrated as sufficiently conclusive to warrant their acceptance for a permanent plant.

Published data on the activity of carbon in binary and ternary austenite at 1000°C are reviewed. The composition variables are . The coefficient, Vj, has the value for substitutional elements but may be assigned a ualue -1 for silicon to effect a simplification on the mathematical treatment. The activity coefficient PC = is obtained from gas equilibrium data. For the ternary systems studied the Henrian activity coefficient is given by the expression: The principle advantage in cornparison with the analogous expression in terms of atom fractions is found in the fact that for most systems the final term and in many the last two terms are zero. Values of the interaction parameters are tabulated and the graphical comparison of the equation with experirt~ental data is sho,wn in several figures. The thermodynamic properties of the solid solution, austenite, are of considerable importance in the heat-treatment of alloy steels and in other aspects of ferrous metallurgy. Early studies embodied in the Fe-C diagram have been extended to include other binary and some ternary diagrams. Our best hope of obtaining a useful thermodynamic treatment of reactions in complex alloy steels will not be found in quaternary and quinternary phase diagrams but in determinations of activities and interaction relations among the several solute elements. The foundation for such a development was laid by smith&apos; in his early studies of the activity of carbon in Fe-C alloys and his subsequent work on Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-Mn, Fe-C-Ni, and Fe-C-Co solid solutions.2"4 Other observers have also made noteworthy contributions and these will be discussed and correlated here in the light of a somewhat simplified mathematical treatment of solute interactions. Fe-C AT 1000°C In a recent review of the thermodynamic properties of binary Fe-C austenite it was shown that the simple mathematical treatment employed by smith&apos; was capable of describing all the published results on this solution. The treatment utilizes the atom ratio, yc = nC/nF,, rather than the atom fraction. The activity of carbon is proportional to the equilibrium gas ratio, either measured on a scalk in which the activity of graphite is taken as unity or, alternatively, aC may be set equal to yc at infinite dilution. In either case the ratio aC/y = (PC, the activity coefficient. It was found that the experimental data of smith1 and those of Diin-wald and wagner; Bungardt, Preisendanz, and Lehn-ert,&apos; and Scheil, Schmidt, and Wiinnings at temperatures of 800" to 1200° C as well as reliable data on the solubilities of graphite and cementite could be represented by the equation for which graphite is the standard state: The data on alloyed austenite have been obtained at 1000°C. For this temperature, the "Henrian" activity coefficient (which is unity at infinite dilution) is: FOr an interstitial solute such as carbon in austenite it has been shown by statistical mechanicsg that the activity in the infinitely dilute solution is proportional to the ratio of the number of lattice sites occupied by carbon to the number of yet unfilled lattice sites. A variable zz proportional to this ratio serves as a useful measure of concentration:" in which b is the number of lattice sites provided by each atom of solvent; in austenite b = 1. The Henrian activity approaches zz at infinite dilution and the ratio a is the activity coefficient. AS these annual occasions in honor of Henry Marion Howe continue through the years, there is progressively less likelihood that the lecturer will have had personal knowledge of Dr. Howe. The present speaker is one of those who unfortunately had no opportunity to come under the inspiring presence of this great metallurgist. A review of Howe&apos;s work shows it to cover a comprehensive range of interests and to evidence an impressive richness of detail. Not only was Howe at home in the laboratory, but he was familiar with the processes of iron and steel making and had a real understanding of them writings include much that is descriptive of processes with a wealth of material that is becoming of increasing historical value. He recorded his studies of the theoretical aspects of processes and published at least two process classifications, one in 1890 that was lengthy and somewhat theoretical, and a second in 1906 that was more of a practical listing. Wide as Howe&apos;s field of interest was, it is significant of the circumstances of his time that he gave little consideration to raw materials or to their effect on iron and steel making processes. In 1933, Waterhouse, Howe lecturer for that year, presented a descriptive summary of the major steelmaking processes, and in 1946 Joseph discussed the blast furnace process. Otherwise Howe lectures have not dealt with processes as major subjects. In today&apos;s lecture, with no effort to describe the mechanical arrangements of iron and steel making facilities, it is proposed to examine the essential technological elements of the processes, to explore the inter-relation of these elements, and particularly to seek recognition and understanding of those factors which determine why certain processes are or are not used. The discussion of this lecture will deal with the major well-known large tonnage processes, with only such attention to processes of minor tonnage and special character as may be warranted for explanation by contrast. Subject to the errors of generalization and the short- comings of condensation involved in presentation limited to a single hour, it is proposed to examine broadly but intensively those operations which convert raw materials into steel. It is an innovation for a Howe lecturer to discuss the raw materials of the iron and steel industry, but the changing circumstances of passing years intensify the influence of raw materials on processes and require the metallurgist to be alert for the process adjustments that may become advisable or mandatory. For a half century the metallurgical processing of iron and steel has followed a surprisingly straight path, but this does not necessarily mean that there are no curves in the road ahead. Stress measurements taken at Climax, El Teniente, Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines indicate that the deposits cited are generally subject to an inclined stress field that can be highly anisotropic. The horizontal stresses vary significantly between deposits and exceed the measured vertical stresses at Henderson and El Teniente mines. Experience at Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines is used to suggest a relationship between cavability and the premining stress. In poorly fractured, high strength rock masses, high stresses can assist the caving process. In well fractured, low strength rock masses, caving is ensured by breakage along fracture planes. The relationship between ground weight and the premining stress is also investigated. Ground weight problems appear to be most related to the competence of the ground rather than the magnitude of the premining stress as supported by experience at Climax and El Teniente mines. Recent developments in block caving favor the extraction of poorly fractured, high stressed rock. Accompanying the development of these deposits are new problems such as rock bursts. These pose particular problems to mine designers in that no experience currently exists in combatting rock burst problems at block caving mines.

A study was made of indexed penetrations by a single dull bit tooth under statically applied loads into rock subjected to confining pressures from atmospheric to 5,000 p.si and atmospheric pore pressure. Experimental results obtained with a 45" wedge tooth over the above range of pressures are presented for two limestones and a sandstone, a variely of indexing distances and two degrees of tooth dullness. The optimum distance between successive bit-tooth penetrations required for maximum rock damage and chip formation decreases substantially with increa.sing confining pressure above the brittle-to-ductile transition pressure of a particular rock. However, the distance remains approximately constant for a variation in confining pressure below the transition pressure. At a given confining pressure, the bit-tooth force required lor chip formation is constant for indexing distances greater than optimum, but generally decreases linearly with decreasing indexing distance for distances less than optimum. The chip-formation force data obtained at confining pressures for which the chip-generation mechanism is macroscopic-ally of a pseudoplastic nature compare favorably with previous theoretical results for indexed dull hit-tooth penetrntion into an idealized, rigid, perfectly plastic rock. INTRODUCTION To study the cutting action of a roller-cone bit, the interaction of a penetrating bit tooth with craters formed in a rock surfacc by the passage of previous bit teeth must be considered. Current knowledge of the basic mechanics of bit tooth-rock intcract:on under simulated borehole environmental conditions has been extensively reviewed.&apos;,&apos; Particularly of current interest are the effects of bit-tooth shape, distance between successive penetrations and differential pressure at the rock surface on the extent of the interaction. Pertinent to this paper are results of an experimental investigationb f the interaction between successive penetrations by sharp, wedge-shaped bit teeth. It was demonstrated that both bit-tooth angle and differential pressure influence the extent of rock damage between successive bit-tooth penetrations. Specifically, the optimum or minimum distance between successive penetrations required for maximum interact&apos;on or chip generation tends to decrease with decreasing bit-tooth angle and increasing differential pressure. In addition, at differential pressures on the order of 2,000 psi for four va- rieties of limestones and sandstones, the macroscopic mechanism of chip formation exhibits a transition from brittle to ductile. In this paper, experimental consideration is given to successive or indexed penetrat ons by wedge-shaped bit teeth. Since pore pressure in a rock sample is maintained at atmospheric pressure, the differential pressure at the fluid-rock interface is equal to the confining pressure. The degrees of bit-tooth dullness include teeth with flat and round apexes (Fig. 1). Of primary concern in this paper are the bit-tooth forces required for chip formation, the macroscopic mechanism of chip formation and the minimum distance between successive penetrations, i.e., optimum indexing distance required for maximum rock damage, as functions of differential pressure. Of further interest is a comparison of actual bit-tooth chip formation forces at elevated differential pressures with calculated forces from previous theoretical results4 for indexed dull bit tooth penetration into a rigid-plastic rock. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The experimental apparatus consists of a pressure vessel equipped with a piston through the side of the vessel (Fig. 2). A single bit tooth inserted in the lower end of the piston is forced at a desired rate into the rock when the ram pressure chamber is pressurized. Electrical instrumentation incorporated into the apparatus yields a graphical plot of force on the piston as a function of bit-tooth penetration or displacement into the rock. Since the piston and ram assembly are in force equilibrium for a constant confining pressure in the main vessel, the fluid volume in the vessel remains constant during bit-tooth penetration. The results of an investigation of the ternary system iron-chromium-silicon were reported in 1936 by the present authors.l Partly for the sake of theoretical interest, and partly because of the possible commercial importance of these alloys, the present investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of some of the commoner elements likely to occur, deliberately or otherwise, in such alloys if made on a commercial scale. The elements thus added were carbon, nickel or manganese. The alloys studied were, therefore, parts of quaternary systems. This investigation was concerned primarily with the effect of these additional elements on the alpha-iron phase and the boundary between this phase region and the alpha plus sigma two-phase region. The sigma phase is a ternary solid solution based upon the compound FeCr. The work was performed mainly by X-ray methods, but a number of microscopic examinations were also made and are reported. While isolated alloys in the composition ranges studied may have been discussed in metallurgical publications, no systematic investigation of any assistance to us was found. Of the earlier work, the investigations on the iron-chromium-carbon system and on the chromium carbides by Westgren and his coworkers2&apos;3 enabled us to identify the carbide phase. Several articles appeared after the present experimental work had been completed. Lucas and Wintrup4 determined the solubility of carbon in molten iron-chromium-silicon alloys. Tofaute and his coworkers5&apos;6 have made detailed studies of the iron-chromium-carbon system, which will be referred to later.
