Results of laboratory tests are presented to show that lire value of "m", in the Archie expression dernlined by the shapes of the particles in the system. Tile value of m "the shape factor", is constant for a system of particles of a given shape for a range of F - + values. Applying this concept, one can predict F - + relationships for mixtures of particles with different shapes, and these predicted relationships are useful in electric log interpretation. It is suggested that an equation of the form 1/F -10mcan be used to describe the properties of natural formations containing varying amounts of sand and clay. From this work and values of "a" and "m" reported in the literature, it appears that in many cases rocks in the same geological horizon have a common primary porosity but contain varying amounts of a particular clay. It is concluded that the equation can be applied to a rock-water system only when values of "a" and "m" have been established for the particular system. INTRODUCTION The petroleum literature contains many reports of the results obtained by determining formation resistivity factor F and porosity + of rock samples from oil fields all over the world. The usual practice is to use data from a large number of samples from a number of fields to find an average relationship between F and +. Several such average relationships have been advanced. In the absence of data on a particular formation or field, it has been the practice to use the average relationships to give a rough approximation of the F - + relationship. The purpose of this paper is to report on basic relationships that exist between F and + for naturally occurring particles in water solutions. Other workers' have found the same relationships apply to the diffusion of hydrogen through packed beds of dry particles. In the work discussed here, relationships for application to unconsolidated sands or shales containing mix- tures of particle shapes are derived. These relationships, developed for unconsolidated formations, may apply to consolidated formations. EXPERIMENTAL To evaluate F- relationships for unconsolidated rocks, the results of laboratory measurements on simple slurries of clay or sand will be used. Such laboratory studies are concerned with the electrical behavior of water-containing rocks. The wet rock constituents are electrically similar in slurries and in rocks. Archie2 defined formation resistivity factor as All resistance measurements were made using a 1,000-cycle impedance bridge with an oscilloscope as the null detector." Recovery and early recrystallization of heavily deformed, 99.98 pct Cr was investigated by studying metallographic structure. X-ray line sharpening, electrical resistivity, plastic properties, internal friction, and shear modulus. Appreciable recovery of resistivity, internal friction, and shear modulus together with some hardening and relief of internal strains occurred before the visible growth of a textured substructure above 350°C (recrystallization in situ). The complex behavior of shear modulus, internal friction, and its strain amplitude dependence during annealing are discussed qualitatively in terms of the relative mobility of dislocations. BY plastically deforming fully recrystallized 99.98 pct Cr above the brittle to ductile transition temperature, at -350°C. as in wire drawing, chromium can be made very ductile at room temperature. However, this ductility is lost on annealing at high temperatures when recrystallization takes place.' The present investigation was made to determine the general pattern of the changes in a number of physical and mechanical properties during recovery and recrystallization of heavily deformed chromium as part of an effort to elucidate the reasons for lack of ductility in the fully recrystallized condition. PREPARATION OF MATERIAL Wire specimens 0.027 in. in diam were prepared from arc-melted, electrolytic chromium by extruding, hot swaging and finally wire drawing at 300" to 350°C, i.e. above the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature. The total reduction in area of the wire was 98 pct and the last 3 pct of reduction was made at 100" to 150°C before cooling to room temperature. The impurity content of the material is shown in Table I. Internal friction and modulus measurements were made on a single specimen after annealing in situ at successively higher temperatures. For all other measurements, a fresh specimen was used for each temperature and annealing of these specimens was done in evacuated (0.001 mm Hg) and sealed silica tubes for 1 hr at the various temperatures up to 700°C. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND RESULTS The occurrence of a. transition in some physical properties of chromium at - 40°C2 imposed limitations on the temperature region where some of the measurements could be made. The reason for this transition in chromium is at present unknown but is probably associated with an antiferromagnetic state observed below - 40°C.* Heavy deformation produces an anomalous decrease in resistivity when measured at temperatures below -40°C4 though a normal increase is observed above this temperature. On the other hand internal friction in heavily deformed chromium5 over the temperature range 40" to 50°C is invariant with temperature. Above and below this range internal friction is strongly temperature dependent, increasing with increasing temperature. A temperature in this range was therefore convenient for both resistivity and internal friction measurements and for consistency the measurements of the mechanical properties were also made at about this temperature. No structural change has, however, been observed in careful X-ray measurements6 between -195" and 50°C, i.e. departure from cubic symmetry was not greater than 3:10,000; X-ray line sharpening measurements were therefore more conveniently made at room temperature.

More than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after-effect's, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (I) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, 07. 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. Pusk-pull fatigue tests were conducted on copper tricrystals of 99.988 pct purity to ascertain the role of grain boundaries in the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks. Significant differences in behavior were found for specimens which possessed different transverse-boundary misorientation. In speciwens with low boundary angles cracks initiated within the transverse boundary, while higher angles led to transcrystalline fatigue failure. It is suggested that at low angular misorientation moving dislocations may interact with dislocations of the boundary or dislocations present in adjacent pains on favorably oriented glide planes, thus initiating a fatigue crack. MANY fatigue studies have been concerned with fatigue-crack initiation within grains and the mechanism causing initiation and propagation1-3 Although the initiation of fatigue cracks in or near grain boundaries of pure metals has been observed and reported in the literature, the mechanism of this phenomenon has received little attention.4"11 EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM Testing Procedure. To investigate the role of grain boundaries regarding initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, copper tricrystals were tested in push-pull. Axial-stress tests were used to avoid the stress gradients introduced by stressing of some other nature. Copper was selected as the most suitable test material since extensive work has been done on the formation of fatigue-induced slip in copper. Tricrystal specimens were used to provide a grain boundary geometry with one boundary transverse to the principal stress axis and one or more boundaries nearly coincident with the direction of maximum resolved shear stress. The boundary energy and the slip characteristics in the vicinity of the transverse boundary depend on the relative orientations of grains across the boundary. Testing was done at room temperature, at a frequency of 700 cpm, in an atmosphere of either air or argon. It is known that the incidence of grain boundary cracking increases with increasing temperature and decreasing frequency.4 The fatigue machine applied a uniaxial tension-compression load to the specimen by a flat spring which was actuated by an adjustable eccentric. Use was made of an adjustable head and a load cell which had strain gages mounted at 120-deg intervals around its periphery, thus providing a means for eliminating any detectable superimposed bending moment. A clip gage was mounted between the gripping heads to record the cyclic strain amplitude applied to the specimen. Each specimen's hysteresis characteristics were recorded by supplying the load and strain signals to an oscilloscope. Microstructural changes were observed and recorded with an optical microscope which was mounted on the fatigue machine. Immediately prior to insertion in the machine, each specimen was chemically polished. Extreme care was exercised while inserting the specimen in the test machine to avoid either bending the specimen or introducing a mean load. Each specimen was stressed in the tensile direction first and subsequently the load was reversed. Specimen Preparation. Tricrystal fatigue specimens of 99.988 pct Cu were grown from the melt using a modified Bridgman technique. Ingots about 1 in. high were grown to the configuration shown in Fig. 1. Upon sectioning the resultant ingot, several specimens were provided with an identical shape and grain boundary orientation. Except for plane sectioning and final polishing, this method eliminated machining the specimens. The apparatus used for growing the tricrystals is shown in Fig. 2. A spectrographically pure graphite mold, Fig. 3, was inserted in a vycor tube which was mounted on a vertical zone-refining table. Prior to insertion in the tube the mold was assembled as follows. The insert and graphite rods were fixed in position in the mold. The copper was then placed in the mold and the entire mold assembly was positioned in the vycor tube, Fig. 2. At this point the tube was sealed, evacuated, purged with helium gas, and finally placed under a slightly positive helium pressure. DURING the past twelve months the Loudon pool of the Eastern Interior Coal Basin has become established as one of the two largest discoveries since the revival of exploitation in the Illinois region and now occupies a position among the important pools of the United States. On Aug. 1, 1939, production averaged 54,000 bbl. per day from 990 wells, having accumulated a total of 10,305,000 bbl. Its very active develop-ment promises to continue for fully another year. It is the site of one of the industry's most singular large-scale gas-injection programs. LOCATION AND RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS At present the pool embraces an area 15 miles long by 3 ½ miles wide in eastern Fayette County, along the western rim of the now well-known Illinois Basin's deeper part, through townships 6, 7 and 8 north and ranges 2 and 3 east of the Third Meridian. It is the northernmost, and most prominent, productive structure of a group extending over a 50-mile trend southward to the Dix pool of Jefferson County. Three horizons have been proved to carry production-namely, the Weiler sandstone at 1390 ft., the Paint Creek sand at 1460 ft. and the Benoist or Bethel, at 1500 ft. Geologically, they fall in the Chester series of the upper Mississippian system, where much of Illinois' early-day oil was found, having been laid down in shallow off-shore waters as a part of the vast delta deposit underlying central Illinois and parts of Indiana and Kentucky. As a result of this type of sedimentation, followed by repeated uplifts and warping along an anticlinal axis, differ-ential deposition of sands and shales contributing to great irregularity took place. This is further reflected by wide variations in permeability, porosity and thickness of all the sands and, accordingly, in the producing characteristics of wells. Permeabilities range as high as 550 millidarcies, with the average commonly lying between 60 and 100. For the three pay horizons the mean porosity is 18 per cent, at a calculated water saturation of roughly 30 per cent. The Weiler sand has an average thickness of 25 ft., the Benoist of about 23 ft. and the Paint Creek of approximately 18 ft. Of these three productive formations the Benoist

THE ore from the Butte mines of the Anaconda company is quite siliceous; that is, it contains considerably less iron than is needed for the fluxing of the silica. The direct smelting of this ore, therefore, requires the addition of considerable fluxing material. The only flux available in sufficient quantity at Anaconda is limestone containing no metallic minerals. This necessarily makes the direct smelting of the ore so expensive that it is more profitable to subject the ore to a preliminary treatment by concentration. However, as the losses in the concentrator were very high, compared with the losses in the blast furnaces, it was found, by calculation, more profitable to send ores containing more than a given percentage of copper to the blast furnaces, in spite of the higher costs of treatment. The dividing point was dependent on various factors, the chief of which was the prevailing market price of -copper. It was customary, therefore, to segregate the ore as mined into two classes. Ore in the first class generally contained 5 per cent. or over of copper;: this was sent directly to the blast-furnace department. Second-class ore contained less than 5 per cent. of copper, and averaged around 3 per cent.; it went to the concentrating department. With the introduction of the flotation process, it was found possible to maintain an average recovery, as concentrates, of 96 per cent. At the same time, the cost of reverberatory smelting was very materially decreased by the use of pulverized coal. These two changes in practice made the blast furnaces unable to compete with the reverberatory furnaces on a cost basis. The distinction between first-.and second-class ore was therefore abandoned, and the ore was treated by concentration. Obviously, on ores as high in iron as the Butte ores, the concentrator, produces a product that is self-fluxing; in fact, it is possible to produce a

Equations are developed which describe the growth of graphite nodules during a-phase graphi-tization under various limiting conditions. When carbon diffusion is rate controlling a modified Birchenall-Mead equation predicts an "apparent activation energy" of 31 keal mole-1 for the parabolic growth constant. If reaction at the graphite or cementite interface is the slowest process growth kinetics are linear and the activation energy must be >50 keal mole-1. A comparison with the experimental observations confirms that carbon diffusion determines the rate of reaction. Apart from minor approximations associated with Lou! carbon solubility in a iron the theory may also be applied to I-phase graphitization. It is well-known that cementite exists as a meta-stable phase in Fe-C alloys and that if a specimen is held at diffusion temperatures for a sufficiently long period the cementite decomposes and graphite is precipitated. Graphitization occurs by the nu-cleation and growth of carbon nodules and several impurity elements catalyze the reaction when present in minute amounts.1 The growth kinetics of nodules have been extensively investigated in the fee ? range2, 3 and recently in the bee a range.1, 4 Experimental growth curves (nodule radius vs time) have slopes which decrease with time, but the scatter of points is generally too great for the precise shape of the curves to be determined with certainty. Birchenall and Mead5 concluded that they are parabolic in ? iron, indicating diffusion control, and that the migration of carbon atoms determines the growth rate. Harris et al, 1 advanced similar ideas for a-phase graphitization. On the other hand, Burke3 chose to regard the initial growth region as a transient followed by a linear law indicating interface control (i.e., cementite decomposition or graphite crystallization as the slowest process). Jeminson and Higgins6 originally considered the initial steep portions of "parabolie" to represent a linear growth law also. In support of these ideas it has been noted that the apparent ac-

ASH in coal has always been regarded as an undesirable substance, as the heat content of a coal decreases in direct proportion to its ash content. It represents so much inert material that has to be transported, handled when the coal is burned, and finally disposed of. W. R. Roberts, in an address before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, on Sept. 29, 1925, said that on an annual output of five hundred million tons of coal, a reduction of 3 per cent. of ash means fifteen million tons of refuse and a decrease of $30,000,000 in freight charges. Ash also often prevents efficient utilization of the coal through the formation of clinker caused by the melting of the ash constituents when subjected to heat. The mineral constituents of coal may be of such nature as to make the coal unsuited for specific uses, as for instance, high-sulfur coal for making metallurgical coke. While the usual proximate analysis of coal gives the amount of ash, it gives no information as to the nature and composition of the ash nor of the mineral constituents from which the ash is produced. For the efficient washing of coal to remove ash-forming constituents it is desirable to know the composition and distribution of the ash-forming constituents. Obviously such information is also desirable for the most efficient utilization of coal.

A SERIES of seven hypoeutectoid alloys, up to 18.2 atomic pct Mn, was made by the levitation melting technique. The loss of weight on melting was considered to be entirely due to volatilization of manganese, and compositions were computed on this basis. Filed samples (—200 Tyler mesh) were helium quenched from 1000°C after soaking for 5 min by a technique already described.' Quenched Alloys -Assessments of the amounts of a phase produced and the hardness of the quenched alloys are summarized in Fig. 1. The experimental techniques and calculations involved have been described previously. The amount of a decreases as manganese content increases, until at 10.6 pct Mn only a trace of a' is observed. A unique compression testing machine was constructed to load individual 1/8 to I-in. spheres of glass, etc., at rates from 100 to 100,000 lb per min. During loading the applied load was continuously plotted us the deformation of the sphere-platen system. The load-deformation curve conforms to the theory of elasticity. The spheres were surrounded by steel retaining rings or by gelatin (to prevent secondary fracture). The product size modulus was determined from screen analyses. The data shows: 1) Energy input per unit mass is inversely proportional to the product size modulus (or directly proportional to the surface area per unit mass). 2) Increased loading rates slightly increase the energy input per unit mass required for fracture without affecting the preceding relationship. Theory and experiments show that much of the input strain energy is transformed into kinetic energy of fragments at fracture, this being a reason efficiencies based on "surface energies" are exceedingly small. This large kinetic energy component is usually dissipated as heat but may be partially reclaimed because impact of fragments against the surface of steel retaining rings causes additional comminution. There are currently several theories of crushing, all of which can be derived from the general energy equation of Gillilandl as was pointed out by Mitchellet al in 1954'and more recently by Rose and Sullivan. If the exponent of the equation dE-x-"dx is assigned values of 2,1, or 3/2, one obtains by intergration between suitable limits, the equations of Rittinger, kick,' and Bond,' respectively. Other investigators prefer to let the exponent be a variable parameter. To help resolve the controversy, the Allis-Chal-mers Research Laboratories set up a series of carefully controlled experiments in which the level of energy input required to induce the comminution of a single particle by slow compression loading was very accurately measured. The energy input requirement, in conjunction with the size analysis of the fragments produced at fracture, yielded an accurate energy-product size relationship for the conditions studied. APPARATUS The experimental apparatus was designed to apply a compressive load on opposite sides of an "ideal particle." Spherical shapes were chosen, because point contact loading is typical of the mechanics of conventional crushers. The bulk of the experimental data was obtained with glass spheres because glass is a fairly homogeneous, brittle material for which the properties follow definite statistical distributions. The spheres ranged from 1/8 to 1-in. diam. The compressive load was applied to the specimen at a uniform rate by a loading mechanism (Fig. 1) which acted through a system of levers. The uniform rates, ranging from 100 to 100,000 lb per min, were obtained by metering water into a bucket suspended at the end of the secondary level. Point contact was made with the sphere through tungsten-carbide platens. This latter material is extremely hard and has a high modulus of elasticity, thereby having a minimum of distortion when loaded. The actual load on the sphere was measured independently of the lever system by a load cell, Fig. 2, which was designed so that the voltage output of the load cell would be proportional to load. The deformation of the specimen was indirectly measured by a pair of transformers which were attached to opposite edges of the upper platen. The cores of the transformers, which were attached to the lower platen, moved relative to the transformer so that the voltage output was proportional to the deformation of the sphere-platen system. The load was plotted against the deformation on an X-Y recorder. The area under the curve, as shown on Fig. 3, was proportional to the energy input of the

Stimulated emission from Nd+3 in yttrium uanadate fYVOJ is reported. Single crystals of YVO4:Nd, obtained from Linde Col-p., have improved substantially in the last several months. Pulsed thresholds of YVO, laser rods are now approximately 2 to 3 5, cowparable to tliose for YAG:Nd. Yttrium uanadate crystalli~es irz a space group similar to zircon. All rare-earth vanadates have this structure. Rare-earth ions sucll as Nd+3 which substitutes for Y+3, aye situated irz a strong tetragonal crystal field which lacks inversion symmetry. This condition increases the p'robability of the parity-forbidden f — f transitions. Yttrium anadate has strong absorption bands beyond -1000A. These are clue to Y-O, V-O charge transfer and molecular transitions. Under 2537 and 3660A irradiation pure YVO, fluroresces u bright yel-LOLO. YI'U4:E[t are brieJy described. THIS paper describes some of the optical and laser properties of Nd+3- and Eu+3-doped yttrium orthovana-date (YVO4). It reports laser action for the first time in this low-symmetry host. For some time we have pursued a research program concerning laser hosts' wherein the rare-earth (RE) ion is situated at a site of low crystal symmetry so as to increase the probability of radiative transitions. Single crystals of doped and undoped YV04 are grown from iridium crucibles in an oxyhydrogen gas-fired furnace by a modified Czochralski technique.' This material crystallizes in a D4li tetragonal space group of the zircon (ZrSiO,) type.3 All RE vanadates have the same structure and form solid solutions with YVO4. Therefore, it will be possible to investigate a variety of cross-pumped laser systems, as in the case of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG).4 At present, ~d'~-doped YAG is one of the most efficient solid-state lasers.5 Accordingly, most of the material to follow will compare the properties of YV04 to those of YAG. Fig. 1 shows the relative transmission of YAG and two types of YVO4. "Pure" YVO4 has a normal absorption edge and is colorless. A second type has a broad absorption peaking near 4200A and is yellow. Rubin and Van uitert6 suggest the yellow material is slightly reduced. Samples of each type are being investigated by electron spin resonance,7 but these studies are so far inconclusive. The pulsed laser threshold is much lower in the yellow material than in the colorless. Therefore, the absorption at 3500 to 5000.4 transfers energy to the Ndi3 ions. Photons of wave length between 2000 and 4500A cause undoped YVO4 to fluoresce at 4800, 5250, 5460, 5540, and 5750A. This emission, previously reported by Brixner and Abramsom,8 is partially quenched by EU'~ and completely quenched by Ndt3 at room temperature due to energy transfer from the lattice to the RE ions. At low temperatures, some lattice fluorescence is present. This implies that the energy-transfer process is in part phonon-assisted. Although the YVO, single crystals used in this work were prepared from Y2O3 containing less than 0.01 pct rare-earth impurities, there is aopossibility that emission lines between 4800 and 5750A are due to dysprosium, terbium, and so forth. However, these lines are not observed in other compounds, prepared from Y2O3, such as YP04, Y2MoO6, and so forth. Furthermore, extensive absorption measurements on our "pure" YV04 single crystals between 0.4 and 5.0 failed to reveal any characteristic rare-earth lines. Fig. 2 compares the absorption spectra of Ndt3-doped YAG and YVO4from 0.6 to 1.0 . The Ndt3 absorptions are labeled according to free ion, R-S coupling. These term designationsQ are appropriate for YAG:Nd. They appear to be inappropriate for YV04:Nd. In YVO, neodymium must substitute for yttrium. The yttrium site is situated In a strong tetragonal field, where point symmetry is (42m) or possibly lower.1° However, the reduced splitting of the Stark components of the YV0,:Nd spectrum implies that the NdT3 ion is in a cubic site. The only plausible explanation for this discrepancy is that the Ndt3 ion is in a low-symmetry site, lacking inversion symmetry, so that a substantial admixture of 4f and 5d wave functions occurs. In this case, R-S coupling is not valid and J is no longer a good quantum number." Consistent with this view, the 4~ metastable level of YV04:Nd has an oscillator strength larger and a

Some simple models of solutions are described; these include the regular solution, the subregular solution, and the quasichemical model. Examples are presented from the fields of liquid and solid metallic solutions, liquid slags, mattes, liquid and solid ionic solutions, and mixed carbides to show under what conditions and for which systems these solution models are fair descriptions. The deviations of real solutions from the models are of theoretical interest. Some such deviations, both for dilute and for concentrated solutions, arc pointed out and their Physical sigtzzficance discussed. DURING the past half century there has been a gradual accumulation of thermodynamic data for systems of interest to the metallurgist. There remain many gaps in the data, however, and the metallurgist must often face the problem of estimation of thermodynamic quantities where measured values do not exist. One might hope that the experimental progress would be matched by theoretical advances which would make such estimations possible with a high degree of confidence. However, theoretical progress has been disappointingly slow even for the simplest kinds of solutions, and since the multicomponent systems in which the metallurgist is interested are very complex, one cannot expect theory to be of much help to the metallurgist. In this situation, therefore, it seems worthwhile to examine some simple models of solutions from two points of view: firstly, to see if such crude models represent the thermodynamic facts in as many types of solutions as possible sufficiently well for the needs of the metallurgist, and secondly to see what the deviations from such models show to be important for consideration by theorists. BOND ENERGY MODELS OF SOLUTIONS The simple models that we will examine from these points of view may be termed statistical models, in that they are concerned with the thermodynamic consequences of some simple assumptions about the energy of an assembly of atoms, molecules, or ions, and do not inquire into the physical basis of the interaction. The underlying assumption of these models is that the energy of an assembly of molecules (by which we include also atoms or ions) is given by the sum over all interaction energies of molecules taken two at a time; we will discuss only those models in which the pairwise interactions are restricted to those between nearest neighbors. Thus, in a pure substance of bond energy EAA, the internal energy (with respect to some specific reference state) will be expressed as NAA EAA where NAA is the number of nearest-neighbor pairs. A solution of molecules A and B will be characterized by NAA EAA + NBB EBB + NAB EAB where the Eij represent the bond energies of the nearest-neighbor i-j pairs. If one assumes that the EAA and EBB are the same in the pure components as in the solution, and that the coordination numbers in the two pure substances and in the solution are the same, then the energy of the solution with respect to the pure components (i.e., the energy of solution) is a function of the following linear combination of the bond energies: EAB - 1/2(EAA +EBB) = w. The thermodynamically ideal solution is defined as one in which the activity of each component is equal to the mole fraction of that component at all concentrations and all temperatures. (written discussion?).-Since the Lehigh Valley accident, transverse fissures have become a source of constant anxiety to railroad officials, because such defects, only infrequently detected by the trackmen, may appear under a moving train entirely without warning. The number of actual accidents resulting from rails containing fissures is no doubt a small proportion of the total, but the serious losses that have been directly attributable to fissures, coupled with the continual possibility of repetition, creates an alarming situation which demands a full investigation of the cause of fissures; apart from other types of rail failures. Mr. Howard's position gives him a field for action and an opportunity for laboratory examination and research that are unsurpassed, and the results. of his investigations must be received with the utmost attention and respect. His admirable paper, summarizing his previously published studies and analyses of the transverse fissure problem, constitutes a convincing treatment of the subject chiefly from the standpoint of stress and strain to which rails are subjected. The intricacies of the problem are so great that seemingly any theory advanced for the cause of fissures may be attacked from some angle; and although Mr. Howard's deductions are logical in the direction followed, it is apparently necessary for considerable work to be done along other lines before his theories can be fully accepted. It is generally conceded that fissures, whether fundamentally clue to fatigue or something else, are of a progressive character, their ultimate size' being the result of growth from an originating nucleus or point of rupture. Abundant proof of this lies in the variable sizes of the fissures found, and there can be no doubt that their development or growth is the result of the strains to which rails are subjected in the track. Phase transformations in a series of relatively pure nickel-titanium-aluminum binary and ternary alloys were studied. The purpose was to clarify age-hardening mechanisms, especially in predominantly titanium-hardened compositions. The micro-structures, as determined on a tirne-temperature-transformation basis by light and electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, were correlated with room temperature and hot hardnesses. The stability of the ? phase under nonequilibrium conditions was shown to be important in this system. MANY of the alloys designed for service in the temperature range of 1200oF (649°C) to 1800°F (980°C) are austenitic iron-.nickel base alloys hardened by titanium and aluminum. The control of high-temperature properties of these alloys has been advanced by the knowledge of microstructures provided by the equilibrium diagrams of Taylor and Floyd1 and Taylor.2, 3 However, there have been notable instances in the predominantly titanium-hardened alloys where the correlation of properties with microstructure and the equilibrium diagrams has been unsuccessful. Mihalisin and carrol14 have noted in electron microscope studies of commercial alloys of this type that a fee phase precipitates and transforms to 71 (hep Ni3Ti) in stress-rupture tests. Bieber5 found that this fee phase remained in nickel-chromium-titanium alloys even when aluminum was excluded. Age hardening in iron-nickel base alloys has been attributed to 71 by Craver, Aggen, and Dyrkacz,6 ? (fee phase based on Ni3Al) by Beattie and Hagel7 and both phases by Lena,8 Yet, on the basis of the nickel-titanium-aluminum equilibrium diagram of Taylor and Floyd shown in Fig. 1, it has been difficult to understand the presence of ? in low aluminum alloys. Furthermore, the characteristic coarse dispersion of 71 has not been commensurate with the marked aging response. Also there have been anomalous grain boundary transformations in the iron-nickel base alloys which have markedly reduced notched stress rupture properties.9 These have been related to boron content and residual cold work. Recently, Golubtsova and Mashkovich,10 Buckle and Manene11 and Bogaryatskii and Tyapkin12 have noted a transition fee Ni3Ti in titanium-hardened nickel-base alloys. It was apparent from the latter studies that a transition phase was important in the nickel-titanium-aluminum system. The purpose of this study was to identify this phase, measure its transformation characteristics and kinetics, and attempt to correlate these findings with age hardening. It was believed that time-temperature-transformation studies, because of their adaptability to transition phases, would be of most value for this investigation. Accordingly, this method of study was undertaken on relatively pure nickel-titanium-aluminum alloys with controlled variations in boron content and residual cold work. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Compositions were selected from the nickel-titanium-aluminum isothermal section of Taylor and Floyd.' The nature and comparative features of anthracite and bituminous coals have been discussed by the writer in two previous papers.' Although this paper is offered as a further contribution to the subject, it seems desirable at the outset to repeat some of the descriptive matter of the early works in order to show the actual connection between various constituents of both coals and the new photomicrographs and other physical and chemical properties. Structure of Anthracite and Bituminous Coals A lump of bituminous coal (Fig. 1) is readily seen to be composed of layers differing from one another in texture, luster and thickness. There are, in general, three kinds of layers, although only two are usually seen. One is deep black, very compact, and has a bright luster; another is grayish black, has a duller luster and is less compact; the third is black, dull and porous in appearance, but because of its thinness is not often seen except on parting surfaces. This last material is charcoal. American students of coal morphology use the names anthraxylon, attritus, and fusain to designate these three constituents of laminated coal. Anthraxylon refers to the brightest bands, attritus to the duller layers, and fusain to the charcoal. Close examination of a lump of bituminous coal shows the brightest deep black layers to be embedded in the duller grayish black laminae. These deep black layers are lens-shaped and vary in thickness from thin sheets to over half an inch. They are often so continuous through the lump that their tapering terminae are not noticeable. On careful examination the duller grayish black laminae (Fig. 7) are seen to contain many very thin sheets of this very bright black material. The charcoal

First evidence of bauxite in Jamaica resulted from an analysis of a soil sample collected at Bull Savannah in 1938 during a systematic local investigation of the island's soil types. Results of subsequent work indicated the possibility of the occurrence of deposits of commercial grade and dimensions, and in 1942, with a view to emergency development of the deposits as a war measure, the Jamaican Government declared all bauxite in the colony to be Crown property.
