A large number of blast furnace slag-metal tests were examined to determine if the manganese reduction could be used as a primary indicator of the degree of oxidation or reduction of the slag and of its desulphurizing power. Slag basicity and temperature were also evaluated. Two laboratory heats were made and sampled prior to reaching equilibrium to check blast furnace data. IN a recent investigation of the factors affecting desulphurization in the blast furnace, is was evident that manganese reduction appeared to parallel the course of desulphurization. Grant, Kalling, and Chipman1 pointed this out in a series of time studies utilizing closely controlled laboratory melts. Fig. 1 is a composite plot of sulphur removal and manganese reduction as a function of time under two slags of different basicity. Manganese reduction appears to approach equilibrium at approximately the same rate as does sulphur. It was also demonstrated that the addition of oxygen to the slag, as manganese oxide, caused a sharp reversal of sulphur from the slag to the metal.' It has been shown that "Excess CaO" was a primary factor in measuring the degree of desulphurization under ideal reducing conditions,1,2 the following reaction being representative of the process: CaO (slag) + S + C (solid) = CaS(slag) + CO (gas) It was also evident that a second reaction could drive the sulphur from the slag into the metal. A suggested reaction was' CaS (slag) + 0 = CaO (slag) + S Any change in the oxidizing power of the system would thus affect both the sulphur and the manganese without causing any change in the calculated basicity of the slag. "Excess CaO," "Excess Base," and other similar basicity values, under such oxidizing conditions, would therefore not be the best measure of desulphurizing power; instead, as was shown by and Chipman" he oxygen content of the slag at low oxygen levels would be the controlling factor. Unfortunately, the extent to which FeO is reduced in the blast furnace makes it difficult to utilize slag FeO as an accurate indicator of the degree of oxidation. By comparison, manganese reduction in the blast furnace proceeds more slowly and is generally only about 40 to 70 pct complete. manganese, which is present in significant amounts and is readily analyzed, offers an opportun-

The status of the natural gas industry in Alberta, Canada, is described with particular reference to the current extent of natural gas reserves and possibilities for additional development. Certain major fields are discussed as representative of the types of gas accumulations within various broad geographical divisions of the provinces. The estimation of the future performance of a gas reservoir is discussed as the basis for an estimate of the future availability of natural gas from presently known reserves. The future availability of the provincial reserves and the estimated future demand for gas within the province are described. INTRODUCTION This paper is a condensation of a detailed study of the natural gas reserves and the future availability of pipeline gas in the province of Alberta as prepared for Trans-Canada Pipe Lines Limited and presented in public hearings at Edmonton and Calgary before the Petroleum and Natural Gas Conservation Board of the Province of Alberta. The study began in October, 1950, and resulted in the preparation of five volumes of data at the expenditure of more than 20,000 man-hours. This paper is designed to afford a broad picture with detail limited to a type example of both natural ga-accumulation and future availability of gas supply. The province of Alberta has an area of 255.285 square miles which, for sake of comparison. is 8,359 square miles smaller than the state of Texas. Natural gas was first discovered in 1883 at the now abandoned Alderson well located some 20 miles southeast of the town of Princess. The first gas in commercial quantities was found at Medicine Hat in 1890. During the last 68 years. 187 localities have been discovered which are capable of gas production, and 73 per cent of these have been found since 1945. Sixty fields currently are producing gas, including 22 non-associated gas accumulations. Location of the oil and gas fields and prospects in the province of Alberta is shown in Fig. 1, together with a list of the localities of measurable gas, Fig. 1A. The estimated total provincial gas reserve as of Jan. 1, 1952, for the 104 fields estimated, is 11.7 trillion cu ft proved and probable, and for the 187 known areas capable of production is in excess of 16 trillion cu ft on a total proved, probable, and possible basis. Five fields (Pincher Creek, Leduc-Woodbend, Viking-Kinsella, Cessford and Medicine Hat) are estimated to have recoverable reserves of more than one trillion cu ft each. A sixth field, Turner Valley, was initially in this group, but its reserves have been depleted substantially. Twenty-four fields, of which the above mentioned six fields are a part, have estimated gas reserves (including the possible category) in excess of 100 billion cu ft. These 24 fields account for 79 per cent of the total provincial reserves. Comparative systemic analyses reflect that 56 per cant of Alberta's gas reserves are contained in sediments of Cretaceous age; 30 per cent in sediments of Mississippian age; 10 per cent in sediments of Devonian age; three per cent in sediments of Triassic age; and the remaining one per cent in Jurassic and Permo-Pennsylvanian sediments. It is expected that the relative importance of the Mississippian, Devonian, and Triassic sediments will be increased as exploration progresses. GENERAL GEOLOGY The western Canada basin comprises the sedimentary area between the Canadian Shield and the Rocky Mountain Front Range, the Arctic Ocean, and the International Boundary. The basin has an approximate area of 765,000 square miles and embraces parts of the provinces of Manitoba. Saskatchewan. Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. Generalized columnar sections for the Province of Alberta are shown in Fig. 2. Substantially all of Alberta, except its northeast corner, has sedimentary cover. Sediments of all the geologic systems are represented. except those of Silurian age.

IN the spring of 1905 I was employed by Messrs. Bradley and Requa, under our fellow member, Thomas Cox, on the mill plans for the Nevada Consolidated, when an opportunity came to go to the Philippines to erect a small mill on the property of the Benguet Consolidated. This I accepted, expecting to be away eight months or so, but it was seven years before I got back. .I sailed in May, on the Coptic, having as room-mate as far as Kobe, A. E. Drucker, who was going out to Korea for the Oriental Consolidated. It was the first trans-ocean trip for either of us, and we had some rather unusual experiences. This was toward the close of the Russo-Japanese war and the Russian fleet was known to be on the way from Suez to Asiatic waters, but it was a matter of doubt whether they would risk a passage between Japan and the mainland, or take the longer but obviously safer route outside of Japan. The Coptic carried much contraband of war for Japan, so naturally did not care to meet this fleet. No definite word being available at Honolulu, we went to the Midway Islands, but the cable station there had very little information to offer, so we proceeded cautiously toward Japan. On the last afternoon out, we steamed due north at half speed for several hours, and finally sneaked into Yokohama at night, to learn that ' the Russian fleet had met the Japanese the day before and had been annihilated. We sailed over the spot in the Sea of Japan a week later, and when we got to Manila we found three of the Russian boats interned and being guarded by the monitor Monadnock and a cruiser. This was only a matter of form, as the Russians were only too glad to be there for the rest of the war, and the boats could not have gone far anyway, for they were literally shot to pieces. The Admiral's flagship had a hole within 3 ft. of the water line, for ward, through which a man could enter by stooping.

THE production of titanium in 15-1b. lots and with a purity sufficient to be consolidated into ductile metal, as described in a previous paper,1 has provided adequate material for a study of the : physical properties of titanium and a more thorough examination of its working qualities. Data on the physical properties reported in that paper were obtained on metal fabricated by a fixed procedure, standardized for the purpose of control of the reduction, and are representative only of material fabricated under those conditions. There are many possible variables in the working schedule, which will have significant effects on the properties of the finished material; and since the previous working methods were not necessarily the best, an investigation of the fabrication of titanium by other methods was undertaken. In this work the consolidation of the powder by pressing and sintering was conducted essentially as outlined in the report cited' and all efforts were centered on fabrication methods for those powders and the properties produced by them. Hardness, density, microstructure, and tensile properties were determined at various stages in the working and annealing; and resistivity measurements were made on a few bars and drawn wire. [ ] CONSOLIDATION OF THE POWDER The screen analysis of the available titanium powder is given in Table I. No attempt was made to alter the size distribution from that noted because this powder, although coarse by normal powder-metallurgy standards, produced acceptable compacts suitable for the present work. Because of their large specific surface, finer powders are more contaminated by oxygen and produce harder compacts, which are difficult to work. The powder as produced is soft, compresses in a normal fashion, and exhibits very little tendency to adhere to the die surfaces. The subject of fuel-briquetting has attracted much attention on the part of engineers. and investors for the past 15 or 20 years, and especially in recent years, during which a number of plants have been built, with more or less commercial and technical success. Our technical literature contains numerous descriptions of certain processes, and discussions of the industry in general. For a history of the development of the art in the United States, and for descriptions of many of the processes which have been tried, reference may be made to the files of our Transactions, and, for more recent information, to a paper by C. T. Malcolmson, read before the First Annual Convention of the International Railway Fuel Association in June, 1909. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the briquette-plant of the Solvay Process Co. and the Semet-Solvay Co. at Detroit, Mich., which, after a period of long and costly evolution, is now operating satisfactorily on a commercial basis. I believe that it will be of interest to some of our members to have the details of operation, power-consumption, labor, etc., as worked out on a practical and commercial scale in a going operation.

INTRODUCTION IN the sinking of bore holes, there are but two fundamental operations -drilling and hoisting,-which determine in the main the character of drilling mechanism and structures. There are endless ramifications, however, in the execution of these fundamental operations, according to the purposes for which the bore holes are drilled, their maintenance after completion, the protection and convenience of workmen, etc. The three main lines of use for bore holes are in mineral exploration, the sinking of water and salt wells, and the exploitation of petroleum and natural gas. This paper has to do more especially with the last. Here again there are many divergences. Wells may be drilled by either the percussive, the hydraulic, or the abrasive method. Finally, each of these methods, as applied by drillers of diverse nationalities, has followed somewhat different lines of development. The American system of cable-tool drilling has perhaps had the widest application; the hydraulic rotary is also in extensive use; but the Canadian system, the Galician system, and the Russian free-fall system all have their points of recognized merit and are preferred by operators accustomed to their use. These differences in drilling procedure, which rest ultimately on essential variations in geological conditions, are reflected in the chilling structures as well as in the drilling mechanism. The purpose of the present paper is to record those stages in the development of the application of steel to the construction of drilling mechanism and structures with which the writer has been intimately associated, and to contribute to the history of the art of drilling other data acquired in the course of his personal investigations. It is necessarily limited by reason of space to American practice, with especial reference, therefore, to the cable-tool system and the hydraulic rotary method of drilling wells for oil and gas.

DEVELOPMENT of the lime industry in Ste, Genevieve County began in a crude way in 1840. According to information furnished by the Missouri Bureau of Geology, in the early days small vertical kilns built of stone were used, and wood was the fuel. Modern development began in 1904 when one company introduced steel shells lined with firebrick. Within a few years two more companies erected similar plants, and in 1925 a fourth company began operations. Thus there are today four lime companies at Ste. Genevieve, all operating at high capacity and with a gradually increasing production. GEOLOGY The limestone of Ste. Genevieve County, which has the chemical composition and purity required for lime burning, is the upper 80 or 90 ft. of Spergen formation. The Missouri Bureau of Geology, in its geological map of Ste. Genevieve County, gives the Spergen formation a total thickness of 160 ft., but only the upper portion is pure enough for lime burning, with an average raw-stone analysis of 98.7 per cent CaCO3; 0,35 Si02; 0,3 R203; 0.35 MgCO3; 0.3 SO3. The Spergen, one member of the Meramac group, Iowa series, of the Mississippian system, underlies an area approximately 12 miles long north and south, by 5 miles wide east and west (Fig. 1) in Ste. Genevieve County. The entire eastern two-thirds of Ste. Genevieve County is sedimentary, the formations dipping gently toward the east on an average grade of about 4 per cent, or 2 ½ °. Thus the outcrops of the various sedimentaries run approxi-mately north and south. A line running west from Ste. Genevieve crosses the outcrops of the sedimentaries, ranging from the top of the Mississippian to the Ozarkian geological system in a space of 12 miles. Thus with the gentle dip of 2 1/2° the 160-ft. thickness of the Spergen formation stretches out in its outcrop so that it is approximately one mile

Planning of the efficient operation of a gas-condensate reservoir requires a knowledge not only of the gross phase behavior of the system but also of the equilibrium distribution of the various components between the gas and condensate phases. This equilibrium distribution can be calculated with appropriate equilibrium constants. In this paper are presented equilibrium constants determined experimentally for the oil and gas phases initially present in the same reservoir and for the gas and condensate phases of the gas cap material at a series of pressures below the original reservoir pressure. Also presented is a method for the correlation of the experimentally determined equilibrium constants. The utility of the correlation is demonstrated further by an example of its use in adjusting the equilibrium data to permit their application to another gas-condensate system of similar composition. INTRODUCTION Planning of the efficient operation of a gas-condensate reservoir requires a thorouugh knowledge not only of the gross phase behavior of the particular hydrocarbon system but also of the equilibrium distribution of the various components between the gas and condensate phases. At the initial conditions of reservoir temperature and pressure, the original hydrocarbon materials in a gas-condensate reservoir or in the gas-cap of an associated reservoir exist in a single, homogeneous vapor phase. However, some condensation of hydrocarbons to a liquid phase usually occurs in the reservoir as pressure declines incident to production. Because of this condensation. the produced gas changes composition continuously. The composition of the produced gas, as well as that of the condensed liquid, can be calculated from the composition of the original reservoir material through the application of appropriate equilibrium constants or "K"-values provided these values are known. Equilibrium constants have been used for many years in problems of surface separation of gas and oil and natural gasoline recovery. However, no satisfactory equilibrium data at reservoir conditions have been available for the higher boiling hydrocarbons which acquire abnormal volatility at high pressure and are therefore present in the gas phase in condensate reservoirs. Early work in this field indicated that the behavior of the higher boiling hydrocarbons largely determines the behavior of gas-condensate systems at high pressure.' Consequently, a portable test unit was designed to permit determination of the distribution of the heavier hydrocarbons between the gas and liquid phases of a gas-condensate system. This paper describes the test equipment and presents the results of an investigation of the reservoir fluids from an associated oil and gas reservoir in the Frio formation in Southwest Texas. Also presented is a method for correlation of the experimentally determined equilibrium constants, together with an example of the use of the method in adjusting these data for application to another gas-condensate system of similar composition. FIELD TESTING AND SAMPLING In order to determine the compositions of the reservoir fluids, field samples were secured from two different wells, one completed in the oil zone, and one completed in the gas cap. The oil well was completed through perforations in 51/2-in. casing at a depth of 6,822-6,828 ft subsea. Pressure and temperature traverses made in the well indicated the pressure and temperature to be 3,831 psig and 201 °F, respectively, at a depth of 6.828 ft subsea. Subsurface samples were taken from this well after a four-hour shut-in period.

Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd., is one of the four mines operated by the Anglo American Corp. in Northern Rhodesia, now the independent nation of Zambia. Today Nchanga is the second largest single producer of copper in the world, accounting for more than 200,000 long tons of copper annually at a monthly milling rate of 430,000 tons of ore. The average mill-head grade is about 5.20% total copper, of which approximately 60% is copper sulfide. The remainder, referred to as "acid soluble," is copper oxide. Nchanga mines three separate orebodies varying in grade and sulfide-to-oxide ratio. Ore is processed in two separate grinding circuits feeding into three separate flotation circuits. A fourth flotation circuit treats leach plant residue for additional recovery of sulfides.

PRODUCTION AND MARINE TRANSPORTATION OF MEXICAN PETROLEUMS ALTHOUGH the work on which this paper is based was carried on, by the writer as Special Commissioner of the Petroleum Department of the Mexican Government, the opinions expressed are only his personal views for which the Mexican Government can in no way be held responsible. Notwithstanding that the appointment covers all phases of the so-called petroleum question, as the one question of immediate importance was that relating to taxation, it was decided to devote all the time to this phase of the work. The present report has been divided into two closely related parts, .the first dealing with the production and marine transportation of Mexican petroleum, and the second, with the Mexican taxation on petroleum and its products. The writer wishes, to acknowledge the loyal cooperation rendered by Mr. M. C. Ehlen, who had charge of the statistical, work, and by Miss S. Stern and Messrs. E. P. Heiles and J. E. Morrissey. The aim throughout the work has been; to pave the way for a thorough understanding between the Mexican Government and the oil operators and to present a true and clear statement of facts relating to the questions at issue.

Poly crystalline wires of Fe-3.2 wt pct Si were cold-drawn to 31, 66, and 87 pct reductions of area. Mechanical properties and tnicrostructures were studied after recovery and re crystallization. An initial increase in strength during recovery was ascribed to strain aging, and subsequent softening was largely due to polygonization rather than re-crystallization. No unique actioation energies could be determined for the recovery process. Rather, activation energies ranged from 60,600 cal per mole at 10 pct recovery to 83,200 cal per mole when recovery was 50 pct complete. Sites for the nucleation of recrystallization were found to depend on time and temperature. In the early stages of re-crystallization, nucleation occurred in deformation hands. Later, or at high temperatures, recrystal-lized grains were nucleated primarily al grain boundaries. Polygonized structures did not seem to be preferred sites for nucleation. MUCH of the research on deformation, recovery, and recrystallization processes in bcc materials has been performed on single crystals or lightly worked polycrystals. Little study has been devoted to the relation of mechanical properties to micro-structure in polycrystals after severe deformation and subsequent annealing. This paper presents the results of a study of the tensile properties and microstructures of Fe-Si wires drawn varying amounts and annealed at a series of temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments were carried out on an alloy of the following composition: 3.2 wt pct Si, 0.08 Mn, 0.016 C, 0.005 0, 0.0002 N, 0.0001 H, 0.008 P, 0.034 S. The material was received as l-in.-sq bars cut longitudinally from a hot-rolled slab provided by the Armco Steel Corp. The bars were forged to 3/8-in. rounds, centerless-ground to 0.250 in., and swaged to '0.108 in. All subsequent reductions were performed by room-temperature wire drawing at the rate of 2 in. per min. Each preliminary draft gave approximately 30 pct reduction of area and was followed by a l-hr anneal at 1010°C in dry hydrogen. One of the outstanding achievements in connection with this country's war efforts has been the ability of our mining industry to supply from domestic sources many of the minerals of strategic importance that formerly were obtained principally from abroad. In order to meet the war-born demands for these scarce minerals, it has frequently been necessary to develop special methods for treating ores and waste products hitherto considered too lowgrade to be workable; and to improve the efficiency of older beneficiation processes. Important in this respect have been the recent technological advances in the field of froth flotation of nonsulphide minerals. Because of the refractory nature of many of these domestic ores, and, in many cases, the limited available technical data regarding their treatment, much research work has been necessary. The following examples describe the procedures and reagents used, and the results obtained, in certain laboratory flotation investigations conducted by American Cyanamid Company's engineers at the Cyanamid Ore Dressing Laboratory on ores containing such minerals as scheelite, manganese oxides and carbonate, ilmen-ite, brookite, kyanite, garnet, spodumene, mica, feldspar, celestite, fluorite, chromite, corundum, and cassiterite. In presenting these data, we wish to point out that many of the minerals listed have previously been tested, and their amenability to flotation reported, by other investigators—notably those of the United States Bureau of Mines. In some instances the procedures and reagents used in the treatment of some of the following described ores follow rather well-established lines, and with one or two exceptions, the reagents used were well known. However, many of the ores tested did not respond well to simple conventional procedures and it was necessary to adopt special methods of conditioning and desliming, reversal of the usual order of floatability of some of the minerals, multiple cleaning, etc., in order to secure separations. Except where otherwise noted, all numbered and trade-marked reagents mentioned in this paper are marketed by the American Cyanamid Co. or the American Cyanamid and Chemical Corporation. Tungsten ORes Tungsten minerals, vitally important in the war industries of the United States, rank high in the list of those we formerly had to import in order to supply our needs. Most of our domestic ores of tungsten contain scheelite as the valuable mineral. Today there are in the neighborhood of twelve tungsten operations in this country where flotation is used as the main or accessory form of benefication. It has, of Course, been known for some time that scheelite and other tungsten minerals respond to treatment by flotation.

This study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain variations in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates in some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity. crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. Introduction When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel-exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfuls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the different mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accuracy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. Introduction When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel-exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfuls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the different mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accuracy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results. The removal of mine-water by hoisting in tanks instead of pumping, while somewhat a reversion to the methods of the ancients, has come very rapidly into favor in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania during the past few years. In fact, so much so, that at the present time there are at least eight large collieries at which all the water is hoisted, and six more plants are in preparation. The particulars of the plants in operation and under construction, as far as decided on, are given in the tables on pages 107 and 108. Besides these, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western R.R. Co. is constructing a hoist of large capacity for a depth approximating 500 feet, to be located in the Keyser Valley, near Scranton. The hoists will be driven by electric motors, geared directly to the sheaves. The Lehigh Valley Coal Company is planning a large hoist for the Packer collieries in the Shenandoah district, but no work has been done on this as yet. The earliest regular hoisting, I believe, mas done by means of semi-cylindrical tanks (Fig. 1) at the Nanticoke collieries of the Susquehanna Coal Company. These tanks were attached under the regular shaft-carriages, taking in water through six large clack-valves in the bottom, and discharging through an endgate opened by a lever which was operated by a guide-piece on the shaft head-frame. These tanks were designed July, 1880, by the late J. H. Bowden, one of the very early members of the Institute. Similar tanks are still used in emergencies at the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 shafts of the company. The objections to. their use were: that water could only be hoisted during the night-shift, or when the shafts were not in use for hoisting coal, thus requiring a very large sump, and greatly limiting the water capacity of the plants; that the alternate wetting and drying

BACKGROUND OF SURFACE MINING Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to in- crease. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining. 4) Surface mining normally recovers a much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining

THE composition and quality of finished steel depend upon selection and proportioning of the raw materials of the charge as well as on control of furnace practice. This chapter deals only with those raw materials of the basic open-hearth process which are important in determining the composition of the steel or slag. They are the metallic charge, oxygen-bearing materials, fluxes, and alloying and deoxidizing additions. Refractories, which may also affect the slag composition, are discussed in the previous chapter. Wide variations are possible in the type and composition of charged materials, but in all cases certain fundamental relationships among the elements of the charge must be maintained. Since the process consists essentially of refinement by oxidation of undesired elements, a balance must be established between the sources of oxygen and the elements in the charge that are subject to oxidation (see Chapters II and VII). For example, if it is desired to use a high ratio of blast-furnace hot metal to scrap, it is necessary to add an oxygen-bearing material such as ore or mill scale to eliminate the excess carbon and silicon that are present in the hot metal. An example of the opposite extreme would be the use of a metallic charge composed entirely of steel scrap. With this type of charge, it is common practice to substitute burnt lime for limestone as a flux and to charge some carbonaceous material such as coke to avoid an excess of oxygen in relation to the elements of the charge that are subject to oxidation. Elements such as copper and nickel, which are not subject to oxidation or other reactions resulting in their elimination, may be introduced into the charge only to the extent to which they are permissible in the finished steel. An example of adjustment of the charge for elements of this type would be found in the use of steel scrap high in copper. In this case, metallic components of the charge other than the scrap should below in copper, or a sufficiently high ratio of pig iron to scrap should be charged to dilute the copper from the scrap, so that the average copper content of the melt will be below the required maximum.

The results of a preliminary study of 113 ternary titanium-base alloys are described. The compositions investigated were as follows: 1. Ternary titanium-carbon alloys containing copper, silicon, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, or cobalt. 2. Ternary titanium-nitrogen alloys containing chromium. 3. Ternary titanium-chromium alloys containing additions of vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, or nickel. 4. Ternary titanium-manganese alloys containing additions of silicon, chromium, tungsten, or iron. Tensile properties, minimum bend radii, hardnesses, response to heat treatment and aging treatment, and phase relationships for these alloys were determined. THIS is the second in a series of papers describing some of the results of the exploratory work on titanium alloys being conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute for the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The work with the binary alloy systems has been described in a previous publication.' This paper describes ternary titanium-base alloys as follows: 1. Ternary titanium-carbon alloys containing copper, silicon, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, or cobalt. 2. Ternary titanium-nitrogen alloys containing chromium. 3. Ternary titanium-chromium alloys containing additions of vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, or nickel. 4. Ternary titanium-manganese alloys containing additions of silicon, chromium, tungsten, or iron. As the preparation and fabrication of the 0.5-Ib experimental titanium alloy ingots to 14-ga sheet, as well as the methods of testing used in this work, have been described in the first paper of this series, Titanium Binary Alloys, no further discussion of these techniques will be given. Ternary Alloys Containing Carbon The following alloys of titanium, containing carbon and one other metal, were investigated: 1. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 2.5, and 5 pct copper. 2. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 2, and 3 pct silicon. 3. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 2.5, and 5 pct vanadium. 4. 0.25 pct carbon; 2.5, 3.5, 5, 10, and 15 pct chromium. 5. 0.5 pct carbon; 2.5, 3.5, and 5 pct chromium. 6. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 1.75, 2.5, 3.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 pct manganese. 7. 0.5 pct carbon; 1.75, 2.5, 3.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 pct manganese. 8. 0.25 pct carbon; 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 pct iron. 9. 0.25 pct carbon; 1, 2, and 3 pct cobalt.

The basic research for this study was conducted by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories in 1974. The high-sulfur content of coal threatens to erode its competitive position in the future. The impact of sulfur removal on final costs of eastern interior coal lies at the very heart of this market analysis. An extensive market survey was conducted that considered both traditional coal markets as well as anticipated future markets. Competition for coal from this province considers low-sulfur Western coal, nu- clear power, international oil and coal trade, as well as Appalachian coal producers. Based on projections of future energy consumption under several scenarios, a comprehensive market forecast for eastern interior coal was made to 2040. The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.
