During the past year there have been a number of significant investigations that have furnished evidence on the driving forces governing grain growth and on the role played by boundary impurities. Thus Burke has shown that in high purity alpha brass the rate of grain growth in the earliest stages is approximately inversely proportional to the existing grain size. This relation agrees with one derived by Zener assuming that surface energy was the driving force in grain growth. Also in confirmation of the surface energy hypothesis, Burke found that growth virtually stopped when the grain boundaries or even only the grain corners were melted.

The diffusivity of carbon in iron, cobalt, and alloys of 89.7 and 79.3 wt pct Co has been determined by a decarburization method for the temperature range 850° to 1100°C. The Plots of log D us 1/T for the two Fe-Co alloys are linear through the region of the Curie temperature, showing that, unlike some cases of substitutional diffusion, carbon diffusion in these alloys is not affected by electron spin order. RECENT investigations1-' have shown that for substitutional diffusion in iron the change in diffusivity with temperature does not follow an Arrhenius equation, at temperatures near the Curie temperature. Data on the diffusivity of carbon in a iron5"9 indicate that this anomaly does not exist for interstitial diffusion; however, this has not been definitely established. Since cobalt and Fe-Co alloys, 80 to 100 pct Co, have Curie temperatures in a temperature range convenient for carbon-diffusion measurements they are suitable systems for studying the relation of interstitial diffusion and the Curie temperature. EXPERIMENTAL The carbon diffusivity, D, was determined by a decarburization method. The diffusion cylinders, made from small vacuum melts of electrolytic cobalt and plastiron, were about 0.76 cm diam and 6.3 cm long. A small amount of carbon was added to each melt to keep the oxygen content as low as possible. The cylinders were first treated with a hydrogen-3 pct water vapor mixture at 1100°C to constant weight, then carburized to the desired initial carbon content with a suitable CO-C02 gas mix-

Throughout history mining operations have, been relatively technical in character and somewhat esoteric. In ancient times mines were places where prisoners of war or criminals were sent, to drag out short lives of hard labor, under conditions ranging from hazardous to lethal. Underground mines were damp and poorly lighted, and workers were often cramped in narrow spaces and tiresome positions. Hard rock was mined by building fires against faces and quenching with water. Combustion products from these fires and from such dim torches as were provided, plus the dampness, made the underground atmospheres quite injurious to health. During the Middle Ages, mining became less penitential and more technical. Because of the desire of sovereigns to foster production from mines, miners enjoyed special privileges as free men. Crude pumping, hoisting, and ventilation systems were introduced (Fig. 9.1). However, mining remained a relatively hardworking, hazardous occupation, separated from the lives and comprehensions of most people. With the Industrial Revolution, steam-powered pumps enabled penetration to greater depths, and the use of power-driven machinery gradually revolutionized productivity. Skill became more important than back-breaking labor. This revolution continues into the present. Mining today uses some of the largest and most complicated machinery in existence and little rock is moved by direct labor. Power drills, explosives, and boring machines penetrate and break hard rock. The modern mine, surface or underground, presents an impressive panoply of drilling, breaking, loading, and transporting equipment, facilities for power transmission, pumping, and ventilation, and expensive, complicated crushing and treatment machinery. Modern technology, machinery, and skilled workmen produce an efficiency that knows no parallel in the raw material field. Mineral substances are extracted and converted into useful forms at costs which are dwarfed by those of providing forest or agricultural products in terms of comparable weights, even though conversion of these last categories is typically much simpler. Capital investment per worker, i.e., mechanization, is greater than in nearly all other industries. Despite these features, and more than average financial risk, the mineral industries perform at modest profit. The popular concept that mines and oil fields are sources of boundless rewards is a myth, sustained by the occasional unusual episode. Before one can start actual production of minerals, he must first acquire a suitable deposit. The process of acquisition will require anything from a rather simple search to a difficult, lengthy, expensive exploration effort. After locating the desired deposit, title must be obtained by denouncement, concession, leasing, or purchase. If the deposit is solid, it can be mined in pits or underground workings. If fluid or easily fusible, it can be produced through wells. If dissolved in lake or seawater, it can be

Iodide zirconium was combined with calculated amounts of ZrO2 or master alloys and arc-melted. Annealing treatments were carried out at 21 temperature levels. Metallographic examination of the heat treated specimens permitted construction of the binary phase diagram from zirconium to ZrO2. Oxygen additions to zirconium raise the transformation temperature as well as the melting point. Features of the diagram include the peritectic formation of beta, the formation of alpha directly from the melt, an intermediate phase ZrOB with a' range of homogeneity, and a eutectic between alpha and Zr02. PHASE relationships in the Zr-0 system were determined in the range 0 to 66. 7 atomic pct 0 (ZrO,). Arc-melted alloys were annealed at temperature levels between 600" and 2000°C. Determination of the phase boundaries was accomplished by metallographic evaluation of specimens quenched from the various temperatures. Incipient melting techniques were used to determine solidus curves, and X-ray diffraction work was employed to study the lattice parameters of the a solid solution and the phase ZrO,. Experimental Procedures Westinghouse "Grade 1" iodide zirconium crystal bar (approximately 99.8 pct pure) was employed for the investigation. This material is substantially free of the impurity inclusions characteristic of most zirconium metal. Previous work has shown it to be the most satisfactory grade for phase diagram studies. The zirconium crystal bar, as-received, was coated with corrosion product from autoclave tests by which its grade designation is determined. The bars were sand blasted lightly, pickled for 1 min in a 20 pct HN0,-5 pct HF aqueous solution, rinsed in water and acetone, and dried. The bars were rolled to about 1/32 in. strip, cut into 10 in. lengths, and pickled again. The material was sheared to approximately Y4 in. squares, cleaned with acetone, and stored for use. Two pounds of specially prepared "chemically pure," and 100 grams of spectrographic grade ZrO, were obtained for the preparation of alloys. The "Specpure" ZrO, was obtained from Johnson, Mat-they Co.. Ltd.. and Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Div. of National Lead Co. supplied the other grade of oxide. The "chemically pure" material (henceforth referred to as C.P. ZrO,) was used for the preparation of all alloys employed in the determination of phase relationships. A limited number of alloys were prepared with the "Specpure" oxide to recheck certain phase boundaries. Analyses of the two grades of oxide are given in Table I. The C.P. ZrOI was received in powder form, not suitable for arc melting. Therefore, this material was compressed to wafers 1 in. in diameter and about Vn in. thick. These were segmented and stored for use. The "Specpure" material, in the form of small granules, was suitable for use in the as-received condition. A nonconsumable electrode arc-melting furnace was used to prepare alloys. A water-cooled copper crucible and tungsten-tipped electrode were employed. The material was placed in the crucible and rapidly melted under a protective atmosphere of helium gas by striking the arc on a tungsten stud and directing it upon the charge material. Details of operation, including drawings of this type furnace, have been published.'

The Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. grate-kiln pelletizing plant located at Whyalla, South Australia, produced a total of 250,000 tons of fluxed pellets during 1970. More than 180,000 tons were exported to Japan, while the remainder was used in B.H.P. Co. blast furnaces. The pellet plant treats high grade hematite ore fines and has a nominal capacity of 1.5 million tpy. The induration equipment includes a grate 12-ft 2-in. wide by 164-ft 1-in. long, a kiln 18-ft 6-in. diam by 118-ft 8-in. long, and a rotary cooler 50-ft mean diam by 7 ft wide. Operating problems encountered in the production of fluxed pellets are detailed. The most significant aspect of the trial was the increased production, from about 5100 tpd up to a maximum of 7100, brought about by the addition of artificial magnetite to the plant feed. Laboratory evaluation of fluxed pellets showed that pellets having a basicity ratio (CaO to SiO2) in excess of 1.2 have excellent physical qualities. Reducibility and compressive strength after reduction were both higher for these fluxed pellets than for normal acid pellets. Although it was not possible to publish blast furnace operating data, blast furnace trials on fluxed pellets indicated that production was higher and dust losses substantially lower, compared with similar operations on acid pellets.

During the course of an in~*estigation into the occurrence of ordered AB3 structures, the following new phases have been found —CrRh3 (AuCu3 type), CrCo3 (MgCd3 type), HfCo4 (Ths Mn23 type), and WPt, MoPh type). The composition of the TiPt3-x phase (TiNi, type) is close to Ti23Pl77. The alloy chenzistry of transition rnetal AB3 structures is rezliewed in the light of electron concentration correlations of hex-agonality recently obtained for quasi-binary alloys. The relatizte colurne contraction in the AB3 structures increases with increasing difference in volume of the conzponents. A family of ordered close-packed layered structures is formed by stacking identical layers of composition AB, in various sequences, such that the coordination is twelvefold throughout and there are no A-A contacts. Previous work' on quasi-binary AB3 alloys has led to the conclusion that the stacking sequence of the AB, structures changes with increasing radius ratio RA/RB from a purely cubic, through different mixtures of hexagonal and cubic stacking to a purely hexagonal stacking. However. for binary AB3 alloys, a correlation between the type of the crystal structure and the position of the components in the various volumns of the periodic table has been noted.2-5 It has been noted6 that this correlation appears to hold even though the radius ratio RA/RB may vary over a considerable range with the location of the components in the three long periods. Another study7" of several quasi-binary systems led to the conclusion that an increase in hexagonality of the stacking is associated with increase in the electron concentration e/a. as defined by the average per atom of the total number of electrons outside the inert gas shells. In apparent conflict with this conclusion, it is known that seven binary alloy structures isotypic with TiNi3 which is 50 pct hexagonal occur at a higher electron concentration (e/n = 8.5) than that (e/a = 8.25) for the 100 pct hexagonal MgCd3 type structure present in seven binary AB3 alloys. Table 111. In the present work, an investigation into the occurrence of binary AB3 structures in transition metal alloys was made, and a survey of binary AB3 structures is presented. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were pure metals of 99.9 wt pct purity. The alloys were arc-melted under partial pressure of argon and annealed in sealed silica capsules lined with molybdenum foil under argon at- mosphere. The total weight loss upon melting and subsequent annealing was always less than 1 pct and hence the alloys will be referred to by their intended (unanalyzed) compositions. Wherever the constitution permitted. the alloys were given a homogenizing treatment at 1200°C (3 days) prior to annealing. Unless otherwise stated all alloys were annealed at 900°C for 1 week and water-quenched. Sometimes the final annealing treatment was carried out on powders to accelerate the attainment of equilibrium. X-ray powder patterns were taken using a Guinier-de Wolff focusing camera (CuK, radiation) or an asymmetrical focusing camera (Co or CrK, radiation). For lattice parameter determination. internal silicon standards were employed. The intensity calculations were made using a Fortran IV program written by Jeitschko and parthe.9 RESULTS Twenty AB3 and three AB4 alloys were investigated. Table I lists the crystallographic data on some of the intermediate phases encountered in the present work. Table II contains the X-ray data for HfCo, (Th,,Mn,, type). The positional parameter, x. was assumed to be 0.378. the value for Th6Mnn2310 The X-ray pattern of ZrCo, was very similar to that of HfCo, and the previous structure determination of ZrCo, by Kuzma el al." was confirmed. Ordering in the alloy CrCo could be ascertained by the presence of only one weak super lattice line (101). the others being too weak presumably owing to the small difference in the scattering powers of chromium and cobalt. This line was observed in the X-ray pattern of powder from the massive sample annealed at 830°C (7 days) after the powder had been reannealed at 600°C (24 hr). The diffraction pattern of the powder similarly reannealed at 830°C (24 hr) contained only the lines due to a mixture of hcp and fcc Co(Crj solid solutions. Therefore, it appears reasonable to assume that O2 and/or N2 contamination which would be less likely to occur during the 600°C anneal was not responsible for the observed weak reflection. Also. this reflection cannot be identified with any of the strong lines of the neighboring s phase which is present in the Co-Cr system at higher chromium contents. The composition corresponding to the TiNi3 structure observed by Raman et al.12 in the two-phase alloy Ti,zt,, has been established in the present work as being between There was satisfactory agreement for the low-angle lines (up to d = 1.997A) between the observed diffraction pattern of TiCua and that calculated assuming the ZrAu, structure. as recently proposed by Pfeifer-et a1.I3 However. some of the superlattice lines. e.g., at d = 1.937 and 1.919A. predicted by the ZrAu, structure were not actually observed eve? though neighboring lines. at d = 1.947 and 1.986A. of comparable calculated intensity were present. A method is outlined for the analysis of large cores, developed primarily for the purpose of obtaining reliable data on fractured or vugular limestones. Porosity and fluid saturations are determined by a modified Dean-Stark extraction after initially bringing the samples to 100 per cent liquid saturation by a vacuum-pressure method. Horizontal permeabilities on the whole samples are determined in two directions, parallel and perpendicular to the di-rection of principal fracturing. Results are presented for various types of formations. A comparison is made between data obtained by this special method and the method of conventional analysis, and discussion is given of the relative advantages and limitations of each. In view of this comparison a modified method for the analysis of fractured and vugular formations is proposed, which method retains the advantages of the previously outlined techniques but gives promise of speeding up the analysis. INTRODUCTION For many years the greater part of the production in the Permian Basin was from formations of Permian and Pennsylvanian age. While production from these formations is still the predominant production. deeper prospecting has brought to light older formations with oil productive characteristics. Attempts to core these deeper horizons were at first usually characterized by poor recovery. The old rule of thumb, "good core recovery — poor well" was originated and remained in effect until recently. With the advent of diamond coring and the increased efficiency in drilling and coring operations. the old adage has lost its significance. Formations of Devonian. Silurian and Ordo-vician ages were successfully cored with varying degrees of recovery. The cores thus obtained were surprising and in some case; disappointing. Good recovery from these formations led to speculation as to the feasibility of analysis and the meaning of data obtained from conventional analysis. Commercial laboratories were engaged to analyze these cores. and their results indicated that data obtained by conventional methods would be of little value. From visual inspection it was apparent that in many cases the effective porosity for storage of hydrocarbons. and permeability. were contained largely in fractures and solution cavities rather than in the primary crystalline structure of the formation. In other cases the solution cavities augmented the effective porosity of the primary crystalline structure, or fractures enhanced the permeabiilty of the latter so that the formation might respond favorably to acidization and become commercially productive. Since the spacing of the cavities and fractures was often comparable to the core diameter, it was evident that the entire core should he analyzed instead of small fragments. On the basis of these observations, commercial laboratories were requested to devise a system of analysis which would yield data of practical value. Pro- cedures have accordingly been developed which seem to meet this requirement, and to date nearly 12,000 large core samples have been analyzed. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods used, to present typical results for several fractured formations and to compare the data obtained by this special analysis with that obtained by conventional analysis. Certain modifications and alternative procedures are finally suggested to speed up the analysis. CORE ANALYSIS PROCEDURE Fluid Saturations and Porosity The core sample, in segments up to 15 in. in length. is marked, weighed and examined under ultra-violet light to determine the presence of oil saturation. If present, the approximate quantity of oil and its location on intercrystalline, fracture or vugular surfaces is noted. This information is carefully recorded. The degree of fracturing and/or vugular development is also noted. The sample is then placed in a pressure cell and the air evacuated with a high speed vacuum pump. This evacuation is continued only long enough to reduce the pressure to approximately the vapor pressure of water in order not to remove excessive amounts of water. Water is admitted to the cell and allowed to penetrate the sample under atmospheric pressure, filling the pore space initially occupied by air and replacing the small amount of water removed by evacuation. This paper was prepared at the request of Capt. A. F. Lucas, Chairman of the Institute's Committee on Petroleum and Gas, as a preliminary discussion of the fuel oils which are used-in the Southwest, giving their composition, uses, prices, etc. Should it afterward be found desirable, these observations may be extended over a larger area. In this connection, J suggest that samples of all kinds of fuel oils, including various tars, from all over the country, be collected and sent to some testing laboratory for examination. We would be glad to extend the facilities of the laboratory of the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology, at the University of Texas, for this purpose, and to do the work free of all expenses. After such examinations are made and the results classified and studied, it would be possible to suggest specifications under which fuel oils should be purchased, and to arrive at some conclusions respecting the uniformity of such specifications, with due allowance for climatic and other more or less local conditions. While such specifications do not now depart from a common standard anything like as much as specifications for illuminating oils do, yet there are discrepancies which should not exist. Some of these discrepancies are of lessening importance, due to the pronounced tendency to distill every crude oil that can be distilled with profit, and to send residues into the market for fuel oil. Residues from the refineries are of a more uniform chemical composition and physical nature than many of the crude oils that go direct into the fuel market. The lower flash-point oils are disappearing from the fuel trade and in place of them we are getting oils that do not flash below 220° F., nor burn under 320° F. In the Southwest, it has not been long since we had fuel oils that flashed at as low as 110° F., and the average flash point over a considerable period was 151° F. Now we are using oil that flashes at about 30° lower than the former burning point, which was 256° F. In other words, the flash point has risen, on the average, 100°; and the burning point about 75°.

Design of a submarine pipeline system is governed by many factors, one of which is the effect of transverse horizontal currents on the pipeline structure itself Although this feature alone can be of utmost importance to the life span and stability of the underwater pipeline, it is usually the least recognized, with these hydro-dynamic forces being either completely overlooked or grossly underestimated. In an attempt to supply the methods and means for stabilization of sub-marine pipelines, much capital has been spent by pipeline companies. Design criteria incorporated by these organizations extend over a broad spectrum of engineering with bases varying from pure theory to cut and dry methods. A history of numerous failures has substantiated the postulate that many of these submarine pipelines have been underdesigned from the stability standpoint. By the same token, equally as many have been excessively overdesigned with resultant excess expenditures. An attempt has been made in this paper to establish the magnitudes of these hydrodynamic forces by measuring the lateral current-induced differential pressure distribution around the periphery of the submarine pipeline. INTRODUCTION The expenditure of money for research by corporations obviously requires beneficial results to justify the investment. One of the functions of the engineer is first to make the problem known and then to provide a means of solution at the least possible cost. The initial procedure is to investigate all pertinent published technical articles on the subject to determine if this problem has been previously solved. If resolution of this problem is not obtainable, the next course of action is to evaluate through experiments these forces and their magnitudes. On the specific subject of drag and lift, the accumulation of data is provided from three separate and distinct sources: from experience, from theoreticians and through experimental observations. The experience source has proved costly with money wasted either because of underdesign and failure or excessive expenditures for overdesign, and has not been sufficient to form a definite conclusion on these hydrodynamic forces. The pure theoretician is often not completely cognizant of the situation and his works bear little adaptation to the real problem. The experimentalist has his own problems with regard to obtaining results from small-scaled models and successfully adapting them to the larger prototypes. Each method has its own advocates who diligently adhere to their own separate routes as being the only means of resolving this problem. However, a review of the various methods of analysis leads one to the conclusion that if the advantages of all three are combined, a reasonable solution to this problem can be reached. Briefly then, the problem is to obtain the magnitudes of the forces on the submarine pipeline subjected to a lateral current by investigations of previous design considerations, by a study of existing theoretica1 data and by appropriate experimentation. This paper deals mainly with obtaining experimental data and the interweaving of theoretical and experience factors for resolution of these forces. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE These tests were performed in 1961 at Collins Construction Co.'s main office near Port Lavaca, Tex. Test equipment consisted of a steel tank 3 ft high by 4 ft wide by 40 ft long, with several pumps circulating the water through the tank via suction lines from the downstream portion of the tank and discharging from the pumps directly into the upstream end of the tank. For reduction of turbulence, a wire section was constmcted in the upstream portion and straightening vanes in the form of pipes, screens, etc., were used to reduce the vortex and eddy action in the tank (Fig. 1). A venturi was built at the test specimen for obtaining velocity sufficient to simulate actual conditions. This full-scale test was initiated to eliminate the error introduced in modeling and obtain a truer picture of forces actually encountered. Six- and 10-in. specimens were prepared by

In decarburized mild steel, the strain hardening arising from 1/2 pct strain can he partly recovered by subsequent heating, even though re crystallization or grain growth does not occur. This recovery varies from 5 pct in an hour at room temperature to 70 pct at 800°C. The variation with temperature was qualitatively similar to that reported for copper, but occurred at lower temperatures. Except for the initial portion (Bazdschinger effect), the stress-strain curve following recovery can be superimposed on the original curve by shifting it to the left. In other words, the tensile behavior is essentially the same after straining and heating as if there had been less strain and no heating. The importance of this observation in understanding simultaneous deformation and recouery is explained. AN earlier investigation1 on copper showed that strengthening due to strain hardening was augmented by heating at moderate temperatures, but was diminished by heating at higher temperatures, Fig. 1. Auxiliary experiments1 indicated that recovery and strain aging are independent processes, which may proceed simultaneously, and whose effects are additive as indicated in Fig. 1. In order to study recovery by itself, similar tests were made on decarburized mild steel, where strain-aging effects are known2 to be absent. MATERIAL, TESTING PROCEDURE The specimens were made from rimmed, hot-rolled SAE 1020 steel 0.040 in. thick, by stamping out rectangular blanks and end holes, Fig. 2, and pack milling the reduced section. These were wet-hydrogen treated2 for 16 hr at 720°C to remove carbon and nitrogen completely and then heated 1 hr at 850°C in vacuum to stabilize the grain size. Auxiliary ex- periments showed that heating up to 800°C will not cause grain growth. They were prestrained 5 to 7.5 mils per in. using the special grips shown in Fig. 2. Such small strains are less than the "critical" strain for recrystallization and, therefore, will not cause recrystallization, even at high temperature. The recovery treatment after prestraining and before the retesting consisted of heating for 1 hr in wet hydrogen at the desired temperature. In one test, Huggenberger gages were used to define more accurately the loading and unloading curves. Fig. 3 illustrates the creep during the early stages of unloading, the hysteresis due to cold stretching, and removal of hysteresis by heating.3 RESULTS The load-deflection curves had ratner widely differing shapes for different specimens, both before and after the recovery treatment. Some specimens showed perfectly smooth curves, Fig. 4, while others exhibited an inflection more or less suggestive of a yield point (Fig. 4 shows all extreme case). Some curves were much steeper than others; Fig. 5 shows two extremes. Some additional ex-

In this paper the results of an exploratory study conducted by personnel of the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory on 18.6, 22, and 40 wt pct uranium-zirconium alloy will be presented. LARGE power output and long life or endurance from small, compact nuclear reactors require the use of enriched uranium for a fuel material. However, the ability to remove heat from the element, the tolerable fission product concentration, or some physical limitation of the system can limit the allowable fuel enrichment, or the volume of the fuel. In such an event, the fuel-element designer must find a suitable diluent for the uranium. Zirconium is an attractive material for such a purpose as it has good nuclear properties and a low absorption cross section. Because it has a good corrosion resistance in water, zirconium is a suitable cladding and the uranium-zirconium alloy makes a good core material. The alloy has a high thermal conductivity, a low elastic modulus, and a low thermal-expansion coefficient, all of which tend to minimize the thermal stresses in the core. Furthermore, the unirradiated material is reasonably ductile and has adequate strength. DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLES Two types of cylindrical samples were used in this study 1) short, 1/2-to 1-in.-long samples to test the irradiation stability of the alloy and 2) 2-ft-long samples to investigate the resistance of an element to longitudinal deformation. Composite samples having 0.060-to 0.140-in. core diameters and clad with a 0.010-in. thick zirconium jacket were fabricated by coextrusion and by hydrostatic pressure bonding of the cladding to the preformed core material. Both fabrication processes produced the uniform metallurgical core-to-cladding bond which was felt necessary to minimize the uncertainty of the central core temperature. Both consumable-arc and induction-melting techniques were used to melt the uranium-sponge zirconium core alloy. Since a graphite crucible was used in induction-melting this alloy contained more carbon impurity, which resulted in a finer grain size than the arc-melted alloy. The core to cladding interface was uniform in elements coextruded from the fine-grain, induction-melted core material, while those elements fabricated using arc-melted core material had very irregular interfaces because of the coarser grain size. The market for thermal coal has recently been growing rapidly and it is projected to continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Both the national and international markets often demand high-Btu low-sulfur thermal coal in order to minimize the cost of utilization and meet the environmental restrictions. High quality thermal coal can be prepared to compete in the utility market by desulfurizing the high-Btu midwestern coal and blending it with low-sulfur western coal which is usually low in Btu content. The methods that can be used for optimizing the coal preparation plant operating parameters for physically desulfurizing coal are presented.

THE better control of production was made the topic for a special program of the annual meeting of the Institute last February. In the discussion at that meeting it was brought out that in many branches of the mineral industry (as in other industries), there was faulty industrial coordination. Those who were best informed by reason of their intimate connection with coal, copper, oil, iron, lead and zinc, and almost all other of the essential minerals pointed to a condition of chronic over-capacity, to the dissipating use of irreplaceable minerals, to an unstabilized price structure, and to over-stimulatecl production and the destruction of some mineral resources over and above what is thought to be the needs of prudent cur- rent consumption. The discussion went far enough to point out the existence of various problems, and the question then raised was "what can be done by way of self-coordination of industry?" by "production control from within?" or in other words, "how can the mineral industry protect its resources against waste and at the same time protect both the producer and consumer against loss from prices that are too low or too high?"

RESEARCH looking toward the reduction of the cost of roof support by substitution of longer-life materials for wooden timber is fully justified by the fact that roof support is an important element of all production costs. Permanent or semipermanent roof support will reduce the expense of timber-maintenance crews during steady operations, but even more markedly during idle periods. The management, therefore, is faced with the important problem of timber renewals, which in times of regular operation are frequently obscured by more urgent problems of production. Increased use of timber in the Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania is caused mainly by increased percentage of coal obtained from robbing areas, which requires more timber for safety than develop-ment work, and maintenance of long haulageways through crushed ground despite the fact that less coal is transported over them. The timber reserve in the immediate vicinity of the mines has been depleted to such an extent that it is necessary to secure 70 per cent of the timber requirements from distant sources. Originally, mine timbering in this region was done by largely utilizing round props or legs with round collars. The whole cross section of the tree from which timber was cut was utilized by forming the joints between the legs and the collars with saw and adze, using plank or round saplings for lagging behind the legs and over the collars to prevent material falling between them. The Mine Inspectors' report of 1898 records an important digression from the use of round timber, when two tunnels at the Babylon colliery, near Pittston, Pa., were timbered with 12 by 12-in. square timber sets with mud sills, through quicksand for distances of 425 and 160 ft., respectively. The timbers were lagged with 3-in. plank to control sand.

A MAN who is a first-class metallurgist, engineer, and scientist and an outstanding organizer, administrator, and executive and who, at the same time, has an innate ability to "make friends and influence people" everywhere he goes is an exceptional personality at any time. And if such an individual can retain this combination of virtues during a great war despite the fact that the Government loaded him with enough work and responsibility for three such men. he is a most exceptional personality. And if he can keep his head and maintain an unfailing sense of humor during the trying war years and, while dealing with hundreds of jittery metallurgists and metalworkers, with Army and Navy brass, and with red-tape-entangled war agencies by the dozen, he is a rare personality indeed. Such a man is Clyde Williams, director of Battelle Memorial Institute. who will be President of AIME in 1947. The Institute is fortunate in having him as its mentor during what may be a critical and important year.

In my opinion, the concentration of minerals by flotation is the most interesting problem in ore-dressing, and will command eventually far more consideration than it has at present. For many ores it furnishes a complete method of concentration absolutely independent of specific gravity, and thus simplifies the milling of many difficult combinations. Not having to recognize the influence of specific gravity, we are also able to dispense with some of the complications resulting from classifying-conditions. Where flotation cannot be used for a complete separation of the minerals from the gangue, it will be found, in nearly all cases, to save those portions which are generally lost by reason of their fine state of division. For this reason, it should be looked upon mainly as an aid to general concentration, although there are many ores so well adapted to flotation that more than 90 per cent. of the valuable metals can be recovered from them in one operation by this process. In presenting the results of my investigations in flotation, I have endeavored to theorize as little as possible. That side of the subject has been extensively discussed by others. My earliest work with flotation was done in 1895, when I used various oils, grease, soap, etc., with results that were remarkable. I did not realize then that with water alone equally good separations could be made. Up to 1906, my endeavors were confined to attempts to keep the concentrates on the tables well wetted and away from exposure to the air. In common with others, I observed that when there mas any obstruction in the wash-water on the table of sufficient size to divert the water to either side, the concentrates collected, and, on exposure to the air, would promptly float away. This convinced me that the sulphides were all good "swimmers," and that if,

The rate of dissolution of steel bars in molten pig iron has been measured experimentally in the temperature range 2300° to 2650° F. The rate of solution is shown to be a .function of bath composition, temperature, and stirring. A kinetic model based on carbon diffusion in the liquid phase has been derived to fit the experimental results. THE rate of scrap melting has long been an important variable in steelmaking operations. With the advent of the oxygen steelmaking process and the accompanying shorter heat times, the rate of scrap melting has now become one of the rate-limiting factors in steel production. As observed in commercial practice, the solution rate is influenced by the compositions of liquid and solid, the temperature, agitation, and time. However, no definitive work has been done on the Fe-C system, and there is very little information in the literature regarding the relative effects of these variables in steelmaking systems. A number of questions have been raised in regard to scrap utilization in basic oxygen steelmaking operations. Consideration has been given to the optimum size and shape of scrap, and to the use of preheated scrap as a means for decreasing the pig-iron requirement in oxygen blowing. The determination of an optimum scrap practice for a specific installation depends to a large extent upon the economics of the scrap market and also upon the behavior of scrap in the vessel. The present research was undertaken as a preliminary study in evaluating the behavior of steel in a pig-iron bath under various conditions of temperature, composition, and agitation, as might be encountered in oxygen converter operations or in any steelmaking operation where scrap behavior is an important process variable. Related studies have been carried out on non-ferrous systems. The solution rate of solid aluminum in a molten A1-Si alloy has been studied.' Furthermore, the increasing use of liquid metals has created considerable interest in studies related to dissolution of a solid in a liquid, or mass transfer taking place between a solid interface and a liquid metallic phase.2-10 In an effort to clarify the relative importance of factors influencing the dissolution of scrap in Fe-C alloys, this paper presents the results of a study of the rate of dissolution of a low-carbon steel cylinder in a molten Fe-C bath at various bath compositions, temperatures, and conditions of agitation. An attempt has been made to determine the mechanism of solution, and a model has been derived to fit the experimental results. The rate of heat transfer between the molten pig-iron bath and the solid-steel cylinder has also been studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A molten bath of pig iron (nominal composition 4.2 pct C, 0.5 pct Mn, 0.8 pct Si)* was held in a 200- *In view of the fact that the composition of the pig-iron bath was slowly changing with time because of steel dissolution and reaction with the surrounding atmosphere, intermittent samples of the liquid bath were taken throughout each experiment, Table 1. lb induction melting unit. The internal diameter of the furnace was 8-1/2 in. and the bath depth approximately 14 in. Cold-finished 1020 steel cylinders of 1/2-, 3/4-, 1-, 1-1/2-, and 2-in. diameters were cut into 1 -ft lengths for use as test specimens. One end of each bar was machined to fit a hand-driven, mechanical stirring device which rested on top of the furnace. This fixture permitted 7 to 8 in. of the bar to be immersed in the melt. The steel cylinders were cleaned to free the surface of grease and oxide. The rods, at ambient temperature, were immersed into the molten pig-iron bath. The melt temperatures studied in this investigation were 2300°, 2500°, and 2650°F. Different agitation conditions were achieved by operating with a) the power to the furnace, giving induction stirring; b) induction stirring plus mechanical stirring, using hand rotation with a chain and sprocket assembly at approximately 200 rpm; c) mechanical stirring alone with the power off; and d) the power off and no mechanical stirring resulting in minimum agitation, i.e., only that caused by natural convection currents in the bath. The samples were immersed in the melt for prescribed times ranging from 30 sec up to 6 min. Immersion times were measured with a stopwatch and temperature control of the melt was achieved by power adjustment following temperature measurement with an optical pyrometer. The measurements with the calibrated pyrometer were checked out to within less than 10°F with simultaneous thermocouple measurements. Following immersion, the bars were water-quenched and the diameters were measured with a micrometer at several positions on the reduced area, and by volumetric displacement. I would like to take a moment to consider our polystyrene-silica replica technique, which was developed at the Dow Chemical Co. and which was mentioned in the paper just given by Mr. Thielsch. He stated that he feared that our replica technique would cause difficulty due to deformation of the metal as a result of the application of pressure during the molding process. We at the Dow have never had any reason to suspect that any deformation of the metal was occurring during the molding process. Our procedure has been to heat the polystyrene to a temperature of 160°C. before applying any pressure, at which temperature the polystyrene is a viscous liquid. By so doing the pressure of the polystyrene against the metal is essentially hydraulic and is therefore applied equally in all directions, which we feel should not cause deformation. Our work using this replica technique has brought forth several indications that deformation of the specimen is negligible. These indications are: I. Direct comparisons have been made between the light and electron microscopes when studying a specific spot on a metal surface. For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled. The ideal application is a physically large, but not excessively deep, open-pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported distances in excess of three miles. If, in addition, a high production rate is to be maintained, railroad haulage will probably afford a lower cost per ton transportation than will any other haulage method. Relatively gentle grades must be employed- usually 3% for uphill hauls and 4% for downhill hauls. The greater the differences in elevation the greater are the railroad track grade space requirements. By way of illustration, a 3% ramp out of a pit only 300 ft deep must be almost two miles long. Mainline track locations should be selected carefully so that the frequency of movements during the life of the mining operation is minimized. This applies both to ore and to waste haulageways. Such moves are not only expensive but difficult to execute without adversely affecting production rates. The large mine affords greater opportunities for judicious location of semi-permanent trackage.

All attempts to replace silica brick by other refractory materials for this purpose have failed, but the reason for this failure has remained obscure; we shall give an explanation later in this paper. Before the war, silica brick employed in France came principally from abroad, for which reason, since the beginning of hostilities, certain French steel works have been seriously handicapped. Our attention was first directed to the question by M. Bied, Engineer of the Teil Works. With him, we began certain investigations, at first using our laboratory and the furnaces of neighboring steel works. The larger part of our experiments, however, have been made in the laboratory of the Faculty of Sciences at the Sorbonne. For the heating of our samples, we are deeply obliged to MM.
