IN connection with the problems of bumps in coal mines, much has been written concerning the manner in which roof action and methods of mining enter [ ] into the pressure effects observed but little has been written upon the relationship between the physical properties of coal and associated rocks and the cause of bumps. The question of the strength of bituminous coal, of its elasticity, and the energy it can absorb and store has been neglected to a considerable extent in connection with this problem. STRENGTH OF COAL It is generally agreed that one of the necessary conditions for bumps is a strong [ ] coal.1 Therefore, since the strength of coal is an important factor, a study of this property should be made. Several investigators have conducted laboratory experiments upon the strength of coal, using small cubical or rectangular test pieces. An attempt will not be made to go into all of these investigations, but they are briefly summarized in Table I. Experiments of the U. S. Bureau of Mines8 and of Lawall and Holland (pp. 27 and 34 of ref. 9), however, indicate that regardless of whether the coal is a soft and weak semibituminous (Pocahontas No. 3) or a hard and strong bituminous (Stockton) coal, the maximum ultimate unit stress developed in laboratory tests is higher in small cubes than in larger cubes of the same coal.

THE INCREASING scale of mining operations over the past decade, particularly in connection with the exploitation of large bodies of comparatively low-grade copper ores, has made necessary the study of the behavior of rock under failure. When extractions of as high as 40,000 tons a day are reached in steam-shovel operations and as high as 20,000 tons per day in underground mining operations, it is evident that excavations soon become of such size that the behavior of the rock will often be dependent on fundamental principles applicable to more or less homogeneous materials under stress, rather than on weathering or local planes of weakness. In the ordinary rock excavations encountered in civil-engineering practice, such as excavations for subways, highways, railroads, etc., rock faces are not carried to depths sufficient to develop any pressures, or consequently any failures, except those due to loose masses resulting from local planes of weakness. When, however, orebodies whose tonnage is measured by hundreds of thousands are to be extracted by steam-shovel operations in open pits, it is necessary to determine if possible in advance the slopes that the sides of the pits will assume, for these slopes influence the shape of the excavations and thereby the amount of ore that may be extracted by the open-pit method. When large orebodies are mined underground at depths of 300 to 500 ft. (91 to 152 m.) by caving methods, the surface subsiding as the ore is withdrawn, it is necessary to determine in advance the outermost limits of fracture in the subsiding surface, for on the delineation of these limits depends the location of surface improvements, mills, smelters, etc. and also the location of development work, such as hoisting shafts, main haulage levels, and all other underground openings that must remain undisturbed during the period of ore extraction. The processes leading to fatigue failure in the low-cycle range were studied to obtain an understanding of the basis of Coffin's law. Particular attention was paid to the manner of mack nucleation and to the determination of the portion of the total lifetime spent in crack propagation. It was observed that cracks are nucleated at surface notches meated during reversed plastic deformation, Principally at grain boundaries, and that crack growth occupies greater than 75 pct of the fatigue life. When inclusions are present, they are often the primary sites of crack initiation. From consideration of the incremental distances advanced by a crack in each cycle and of the lifetimes of different materials, it appears that the universality of Coffin's law arises from the similarity of crack-tip strain for a given applied strain amplitude, irrespecti7:e of material. STUDIES of low-cycle fatigue have been particularly rewarding in that a simple correlation between fatigue lifetime and plastic-strain range has been shown to exist. This empirical relationship takes the forml,2 Nner=C [1] where N is the number of cycles to failure, Er is the plastic-strain range defined as the total plastic strain per cycle (the sum of the tensile plastic strain plus the compressive plastic strain), n, the exponent, is a constant independent of the material to a first-order approximation and often has a value of about 0.5, and C is a constant which for a number of ductile and metallurgically stable materials is approximately 0.65 for fully reversed strain.3 This relationship has been shown to be valid for a wide variety of metals and alloys and is often referred to as Coffin's law. However, it is yet not clear why so many different metals and alloys exhibit the same over-all behavior in the low-cycle range. Less is known about the mechanisms of fatigue failure in the low-cycle range than in the high-cycle range, but it is expected that the processes would have much in common. For example, an important characteristic common to both high-and low-cycle ranges is that fatigue crack propagation can occupy a considerable portion of the total lifetime. This has been shown by Laird and smith4 by a count of the number of ripples present on the fracture surface of copper specimens, each ripple corresponding to one cycle of load. On the other hand, some marked differences have been noted. For example, in copper,5 nickel, and aluminum4 there is a greater tendency for grain boundary cracking to occur as the strain amplitude is increased. The purpose of the present work was to study further the processes leading to fatigue failure in the low-cycle range and to obtain an understanding of the basis for the validity of Coffin's law. Particular attention has been paid to the manner of crack initiation and to the determination of the portion of total lifetime spent in crack propagation. MATERIALS A number of metals and alloys were tested, although more attention was focused on a particular few, once general trends had become apparent. Alloys were selected so as to investigate the effects of crystal structure, number of phases, stacking-fault energy, and impurity content. The materials in this grouping were: high-purity copper OFHC copper 1100 aluminum (commercially pure) 70-30 brass (Cu-30 wt pct Zn)

Large jacking test procedures that have been applied to obtain static in-situ rock properties (Ref. 1) have shown that the in-situ rock modulus and strength can be considerably less than what would be obtained from laboratory tests on intact samples. This trend is also expected to be true for dynamic properties, but few dynamic in- situ rock property tests have been conducted. During the past several years, high explosive test procedures have been developed to simulate the airblast and direct induced ground motions (Ref. 2) produced by nuclear explosions . These test procedures load large volumes (up to 10 7 f t3) of the earth with stress levels sufficiently high to produc5 feet of particle displacement over surface areas up to l0 5 ft2. This paper discusses some of the data obtained, and the implications of these results for our understanding of the dynamic response of in-situ rock. DESCRIPTION OF TEST PROCEDURES As shown in Fig. 1, the High Explosive Simulation Technique (HEST) consists of a cavity of uniform height bounded on the sides by a soil berm, above by an overburden of uniform thickness, and below by the test bed on the earth's surface. Horizontal racks of detonating cord are placed in the cavity and detonated at one end of the test bed. This detonation produces an explosive wave that propagates across the test bed, loading the earth with an overpressure pulse that decays with time because of the compression and lifting of the overburden. Since 1964, there have been approximately 40 such tests on test bed areas ranging from a few hundred to l0 5 sq ft., simulating peak overpressure conditions between about 100 and 6000 psi and specific impulses between a few and over 100 psi-sec.

Complete gasification to produce synthesis gas for manufacture of synthetic chemicals and fuels offers possibilities for utilization of the vast lignite fuel deposits in the U.S. The design of a slugging, fixed-bed, pressure gasification pilot Plant is described. Results are presented for initial operation of the plant at moderate pressure and using low-temperature char as fuel. Gasification of solid fuels is becoming increasingly important in the future overall energy picture, both in this country and abroad. Snythesis gas from gasification of coal consists chiefly of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and after suitable purification and modification this gas can be used in the production of synthetic ammonia, methanol, higher alcohols, and synthetic liquid fuels, or as a reducing gas in the metallurgical field.' Most synthesis gas used in this country is made from natural gas, petroleum oils, and refining tail-gases, but the direct gasification of coal will become more attractive as costs of petroleum oils and natural gas increase.' A gasification process designed for use with brown coal and lignite was developed by the German Lurgi Co. prior to World War 11. In this process a fixed bed of lump-sized fuel is gasified with steam and oxygen at pressures ranging from 370 to 440 psi. Effective heat exchange between the ascending high-temperature gases and the descending solid fuel results in low gas outlet temperatures, high thermal efficiency, and favorable oxygen consumption. Lurgi gasifiers are used commercially for the production of synthesis gas or as a substitute for coal gas in many countries, including Germany, Czechslovakia, Great Britain, South Africa, Australia and Pakistan.3-6 The chief disadvantage of the conventional Lurgi gasifier which operates under nonclinkering conditions is that large quantities of excess steam must be supplied with the oxygen-steam mixture to reduce the temperature in the fuel bed below fusion temperature of the ash. Most of the steam leaves the gasifier undecomposed with the product gas and, after cooling, produces large amounts of dilute liquor. Evaluation of fixed-bed gasification experiments using dry-ash removal indicated that by increasing the oxygen concentration in the oxygen-steam blast the temperature in the combustion zone could be raised high enough to operate under slagging conditions. 7-8 Operation of a fixed-bed pressure gasifier under slagging conditions would reduce the steam requirements and the volume of waste liquor and would increase the steam decomposition, the overall thermal efficiency of the process, and the rate of gas production per unit cross sectional area of the gasifier. Because the Lurgi gasification process, modified for slagging operation, offered possibilities for efficient gasification of American lignite, the Bureau of Mines decided to investigate the process on a pilot-plant scale at the Grand Forks, N. D., Lignite Research Laboratory. DESIGN Description of Pilot Plant: A flowsheet of the Grand Forks slagging gasification pilot plant is presented in Fig. 1. The gasifier unit consits of the coal lock, the gas generator, and the slag lock. The fuel, which is periodically charged to the coal lock, moves by gravity flow into the generator and is continuously gasified by an oxygen-steam mixture introduced at the bottom of the gasifier. Molten slag is formed at the hearth and flows through a central taphole into a water quench bath. The slag-water slurry is periodically discharged from the slag lock. Process steam is generated and superheated in separately-fired, oil-burning units. Oxygen is supplied to the gasifier from a gas storage bank located some distance from the pilot plant. The capacity of the oxygen storage bank is about 130,000 standard cu ft at 2200 psig. Liquid oxygen is delivered by truck and is converted to gas during the filling operation. The superheated steam and oxygen are metered separately, then mixed and fed to the gasifier tuyeres. The gas generator is surrounded by a water jacket. The quasi-binary systems "VFe3"—VCo,—VNi,— "VCu3"and "TiFe3"—TiCo3,—TiNi3-"TiCu3"have been studied by a combination of microscopic and X-ray methods. Of the Phases encountered, eleven had close-packed ordered layer structures. Within each system, there is an approximately linear variation of the degree of hexagonality of the stacking arrangement with electron concentration, e/a. A study of eighty -four known examples of AB3 structures in transition metal alloys indicates that at e/a = 8.65 the ordered structure of the close -packed layers changes from "triangular" (AuCu3 type) to "rectangular" (SbCu3 type). At e/a < 8.65, the slope of hexagonality us e/a line increases with the group number of the A component. An interesting series of close-packed ordered structures is known to exist at the composition AB3; however, their alloy chemistry has not yet been fully understood. Dwight and Beck1 observed a correlation between position of the components in the periodic table and the type of crystal structure of the binary AB2 structures formed by transition metals. No consistent effect due to atomic size was noted and they proposed that electron concentration* predominates in In the present paper, the AB3 structures are characterized by a symbol describing the stacking and a symbol specifying the ordered layer. The stacking symbol used was introduced by Zhdanov,7 and later used in the International Tables,8 and by Beck9 in his survey of possible layer stacking structures. Alternating positive and negative integers are used to represent the number of positive (e.g., in abcabc...) and negative (e.g., in cbacba...) stacking sequences. T denotes the triangular ordering found in close-packed planes of the AuCu3 structure and R the rectangular ordering found in close-packed planes of the SbCu3 structure, Figs. 3(a) and (b). The present structure symbols are listed in Table I alongside the prototypes, where known, and other structural characteristics of AB3 phases found in the present investigation. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were metals of 99.9+ purity. The alloys were prepared by arc melting under argon atmosphere using a nonconsumable tungsten electrode and water-cooled copper hearth. The total weight loss upon melting and subsequent annealing was always less than 0.5 pct and hence the alloys will be referred to by their intended (unanalyzed) compositions. The alloys were homogenized and annealed at suitable temperatures in the range 750" to 1200°C, the annealing periods varying from 3 days at 1200°C to 10 days at 750°C. The heat treatments were carried out in sealed silica capsules under argon atmosphere and with a molybdenum foil cover between the alloy and the walls of the capsule. The quenched alloys were microscopically examined and reduced to powder by crushing or filing. The powders were, whenever necessary, given a stress-relieving anneal at the original annealing temperature. X-ray powder patterns were obtained with an asymmetrical focusing camera, a Guinier-deWolff focusing camera, or a Debye-Scherrer camera. Cr, Co, or Cu radiations were used. In some cases, to ensure the minimum degree of contamination, the deeply etched specimens were mounted in the asymmetrical focusing camera to obtain an X-ray pattern. The chlorine content of the coals in the Illinois Basin ranges from 0.00% to more than 0.60%. The chlorine content of the Herrin (No. 6) Coal has been mapped on a regional scale and, in general, increases with the depth of the coal. The depth-chlorine correlation exists because the coal is in apparent equilibrium with the composition of the ground water associated with it, and the salinity of the ground water generally increases with depth. At least part of the chlorine can be easily removed from the coal in the laboratory. In a natural weathering experiment, chlorine values decreased markedly during an 8-week period. Results to date indicate that none of the coals studied has a sufficiently high chlorine content to make it unusable in high-temperature steam boilers, although special steps may be necessary in the preparation or utilization of some of the highest chlorine coals. Investigations into the occurrence and distribution of chlorine in Illinois coals have been in progress at the Illinois State Geological Survey for over 35 years. Since 1948, chlorine analyses of face channel samples and of drill core samples of coal have been made routinely. The increased interest in chlorine and alkalies in coal in the U.S. followed that in Europe, where power plants during World War II were called upon to produce at higher levels than previously and with less down time for maintenance. Higher steam temperatures were reached, resulting in increases in the amount of fouling of external heating surfaces and in corrosion of boiler tubes when high chlorine coals were used. Early studies of the problem showed that coals with high chlorine content were more likely than those low in chlorine to cause difficulties in installations fired with powdered fuel. Crossleyl reported that the first rule of thumb developed for British coals was that coals considered to be high in chlorine (more than 0.30%) caused the most trouble, those intermediate in chlorine content (0.15% to 0.30%) were less likely to cause difficulties and those low in chlorine (less than 0.15%) generally were not associated with alkali bonded deposits and corrosion. However, this relatively simple picture was not adequate to characterize the difficulties that could be expected during the utilization of a large number of coals and Crossley1 developed another scheme for assessing the chances of superheater corrosion. This scheme took into consideration the observation that coals high in sulfur as well as chlorine are more likely to cause corrosion and fouling than coals low in sulfur and high in chlorine. Crossley also considered the ash content. When two coals had the same chlorine and sulfur contents, the one with the greater amount of ash would be the less likely to cause difficulties. Knowing only the amount of chlorine in a coal obviously will not give all the answers. Indeed, the significance of the chlorine content has been much discussed and it has been suggested that perhaps the total alkalies are a better indicator of possible troubles. When an oil operator becomes a party to a proration agreement he may wonder, with good cause, whether production prorated .today is merely deferred until tomorrow or whether oil might be lost. Various types of evidence obtained from production records when studied quantitatively are of great assistance in arriving at definite conclusions. A study of individual examples cited in this paper leads towards some solution of the problem, particularly when they are considered in the aggregate. Many production curves on various pay horizons were studied. A disappointingly large number of these were of contributory value, but inconclusive. However, there were enough curves of similar type from the Wilcox sand at Earlsboro, Bowlegs, Seminole City, the Cromwell horizon at Little River, and the Simpson dolomite at Valley Center, Kansas, from which reasonably definite conclusions were drawn. Assuming that deferred production is later made up with no increase in ultimate recovery, a curve (Fig. 1) shows the normal flowing and pumping life of a composite well, contructed by the family curve method. The initial production of the well shown is 1700 bbl. daily and the allowed production is 25 per cent. On this basis the average daily allowed rate for the first month is 425 bb1., or the area BCDE, which is equivalent to the area AFDG under the normal decline curve. The potential production for the second month is 1500 bbl. and the allowed production 375 bbl. daily. By this procedure a potential curve for each succeeding month is obtained (points A, H, I, J and K). If the well is opened it should produce somewhere near its potential curve for a short period and then decline at a more rapid rate than the potential curve. This theoretical analysis is basic. Actual examples exhibiting all points raised by the ideal curve are rare. It has been known for many years that the alloy containing 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. aluminum can be hardened, like steel, by quenching from a suitable temperature, and that the hardened alloy can be softened again by annealing or drawing the temper. It does not seem to be generally appreciated, however, that the effect of the first slight reheating after quenching is actually increased hardness, the softening effect not taking place until a certain temperature of "drawing" has been exceeded. This paper gives the results of a few experiments on various specimens of cast 10 per cent. aluminum bronze, quenched for maximum hardness, and subsequcntly annealed at different temperatures. The hardness measurements were made with both a scleroscope and a standard Swedish Brinell machine; some peculiarities of the scleroscope test on this material are described. The author is not aware of many previous investigations of the hardness of this alloy when quenched and drawn, but two important papers on the subject should be mentioned. The earliest was by Portevin and Arnou,1 in which it was stated that tempering quenched 10 per cent. aluminum bronze at 400" C. increased the hardness as compared with the quenched untempered alloy and that reheating above that temperature &apos; was necessary to obtain any softening effect. A later paper was by Seidell and Horvitz,2 who mentioned Portevin and Arnou&apos;s work, but did not report any increase in hardness obtained

One of the problems studied by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Washington has been the re-treatment of table middlings. Hydraulic classification has given the best results. Instead of using the classifier to prepare the feed to the tables, as has been the practice for many years in ore dressing, it is used to separate part of a middling product that cannot be re-treated successfully on the table. Middlings are desirable in a table plant because the separation according to specific gravity is incomplete; that is, in the products of the table there is always an overlapping of free particles of coal and refuse that can be distinguished with heavy liquids such as are used in the float-and-sink test. The causes of this overlapping may be divided into two groups, those outside the table separation itself and those inherent in the table separation. The first of these groups includes, among other causes, the following: (1) poor adjustments of the table, (2) overloading or underloading the table, (3) irregularities in the quantity and quality of the feed, (4) irregularities in the power and water supply, and (5) a vertical dancing motion of the table deck due to weak foundations. These causes of overlapping are largely unnecessary in a properly designed and constructed plant; but whenever they are present they materially affect the character of the middling product, and hence the problem of re-treatment. The other group includes three additional causes: (6) small differences in specific gravity between coal and impurities, (7) a size-specific-gravity relationship of the coal and refuse particles in the table feed such that the sizing action of the table opposes the separation according to the specific gravity, and (8) shapes of particles that prevent a separation. The sixth, small differences in specific gravity, may be a very important reason for an incomplete separation. The change in specific gravity from coal to shale is always gradual and the designation of one part as coal and another part as refuse is arbitrary. Continuous sintering-a metallurgical process for more than 50 years-has broadened from its origin in nonferrous metallurgy to present-day applications in ferrous, chemical, and nonmetallic fields. During the past year, self-fluxing sinter production has been a subject of active interest to iron metallurgists in North America. Accomplishments however, have come predominantly from Europe and proper interpretation of these reports requires an understanding of European raw materials and European economics. The technology, of course, can be applied universally.

C.-From being one of the most maligned of metals-a veritable bugaboo-cadmium has almost overnight become respectable, though its slender claim to respectability rests almost wholly on the possibility of its substitution for tin. Preliminary to any campaign for such substitution, particularly for enforced substitution, the possible supply of cadmium should he determined as closely as possible; for that reason the statistical inquiry of which this paper embodies the results was undertaken. Production Cadmium is marketed in two forms, as metallic cadmium, in sticks or bars, and as cadmium sulfide, the pigment. The metal has found its greatest field of use in this country as a component of an easily fusible alloy that is used in automatic fire extinguishers. The sulfide is .used to some extent in paints but chiefly to give color and luster to glass and porcelain. The metal was first made in this country by the Grasselli Chemical

WHILE fulfilling professional engagements, my travels over this portion of the Transvaal have been quite extensive—always on horseback however, so that anything like a thorough investigation of the ground passed over has been necessarily impossible; still, the more minute examination of certain small areas, coupled with general observations, has enabled me to form some idea as to the prominent geological features of the country as a whole. Anything like a complete or comprehensive description is indeed out of the question, as there are no proper maps of the country and the facilities for observation are limited. A large plateau, called the "High Veldt," stretches from east to west across the Transvaal. It is generally level, or gently rolling, and has an average elevation of 6000 feet above the sea; it is destitute of timber, and in fact greatly resembles the western prairies of North America. Rock-outcrops are not common in it. It terminates very abruptly to the east and northeast, the descent of 2000 or 3000 feet into the mountainous country that occupies its borders being made in a

When an Fe-Mn alloy is internally oxidized, the inclusions formed are MnO which contains some dissolzled FeO. In the internal oxidation reaction, not all of the manganese is oxidized; some remains in solid solution as a result of the high Mn-0 solubility product in iron. Taking these factors into consideration, the rate of internal oxidation of an Fe-1.0 pct Mn alloy is computed as a function of temperature, using available thermodynanzic data and recently published data for the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in iron. The predicted and experimentally determined rates for the temperature range from 950 to 1350°C are in good agreement. ThE rates of internal oxidation of austenitic Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys have been studied extensively.1"4 Schenck et al. report the results of a few experiments with Fe-Mn alloys at 854" and 956C, and Bradford5 has studied the rate of internal oxidation of commercial alloys containing manganese in the temperature range from 677" to 899°C. When Fe-Mn alloys are internally oxidized, the inclusions formed are solutions of FeO in MnO, the composition depending on the experimental conditions. Since the thermodynamics of the Fe-Mn and FeO-MnO systems have been investigated,6"9 and since the solubility and diffusion coefficient of oxygen in y iron have been determined recently,&apos; it is possible to predict the rate of internal oxidation from known data. The calculations used in predicting the rate of internal oxidation will first be outlined, then the results of the prediction will be compared with the experimental results of this investigation. PREDICTION OF PERMEABILITY FROM THERMODYNAMIC AND DIFFUSIVITY DATA Oxygen is provided for internal oxidation in these experiments by the dissociation of water vapor on the surface of the alloy. The dissociation reaction is: + H2(g) + [O] [1] where [0] denotes oxygen in solution. The equilibrium constant for this reaction is known as a function of temperature:&apos; log As oxygen diffuses into the alloy, oxide inclusions are formed which are MnO with some FeO in solid solution. The reactions occurring are: [Mn] + [0] = (MnO) [31 and [Fe] + [0] = (FeO) [41 where [ Mn] is manganese dissolved in iron and (FeO) is iron oxide dissolved in MnO. The overall reactions may be written as follows: [Mn] + HOte) = (MnO) + H2(£) [5] and [Fe] + H20(g) = (FeO) + Hz(R) [61 The standard free-energy changes and equilibrium constants for Reactions [5] and [6] are known.6 Therefore the equilibrium constants for Reactions [3] and [4] may be obtained by combining known thermodynamic data for Reactions [I], [5], and [6]. For Reactions [3] and [4]: K = and For the present purpose, both the Fe-Mn7,8 and FeO-~n0&apos; systems can be considered to be ideal, i.e., [amn] = [NM~] and (aFeO) = (NM~~) = 1 - (NFeO) where the Ns are mole fractions. These relations, together with Eqs. [I] and [8], permit us to compute both the oxide and metal compositions as a function of temperature and oxygen potential at any point in the specimen. For cases where the oxygen concentration gradient between the surface and the subscale-base metal interface is linear, the kinetics of internal oxidation is an application of Fick&apos;s first law: where dn/dt is the instantaneous flux of oxygen into the specimen, g-atom per sq cm sec; 6 is the instantaneous thickness of the subscale, cm; Do is the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in iron, sq cm per sec; p is density of iron, g per cu cm; h[%O] is the oxygen concentration difference between the surface and sub-scale-base metal interface, wt pct. B6hm and ~ahlweit" derived an exact solution to the diffusion equation for systems in which there is a stoichiometric oxide formed. They showed that the oxygen concentration gradient is given by a rather complex error function relation. For the Fe-Mn-0 system and for most other systems that have been studied, however, variations in oxide compositions are small and rates of internal oxidation are sufficiently slow that the deviation from linearity in the concentration gradient of oxygen is negligible. Petrographic studies of over 1400 rock and mineral samples, and studies of their field relations, show that there is a complete gradation between sandstone and limestone; the lime-silicate rocks were produced by recrystallization of limestone; mineralization and silicification occurred after silication and at considerably lower temperature; carbonation occurred at still lower temperatures. IN CONNECTION with law suits between mining companies at Bingham, Utah, a few years ago, the writer made petrographic studies of more than 1400 rock and mineral samples in thin sections, and also careful studies of their field relations. In petrographic studies, even when an area is studied intensively, attention is commonly centered very largely on the unusual features of special interest, so that the relative abundance of rock types (or minerals or textures) can only be determined by a study of map areas outlined largely by field methods, and cannot be based directly on microscopic work. It is very uncommon, and usually impossible, to take samples at regular short intervals along and across formations. It is precisely because such methods were used at Bingham that the work presents a rare opportunity for determining, on a microscopic basis, the relative abundance of rock types and the continuity of gradations between rock types. At the same time, a study was made of the alteration of sediments under the influence of igneous intrusions, with results that are believed to be of interest and importance.

A study of the effect upon oil recovery from an un-consolidated porous medium of chromatographic transport of selected reverse-wetting additives during water displacement is described. Flow tests were performed on hydrocarbon oil-saturated sand columns (containing connate water) into which small volumes of short-chain aliphatic amine solutions were introduced during water flooding. Concurrently, meusurements of oil-silica contact angles, oil-water interfacial tensions and oil-water distribution coefficients were measured us a function of additive concentration. Certain treatments were found to cause a slight reduction in oil recovery, while others produced a significant increase (up to 50 per cent of the normtzl irreducible rninimum oil saturation). Recovery eficiency was correlated most satisfactorily with the maximum degree of reverse wetting produced during additive transport; conditions which resulted in only mild oil wettability of the sand reduced recovery, while those favoring strong oil wetting increased recovery. A mechanism of reverse-wetting additive action during chromatographic transport is developed which ascribes the results to transient changes in oil-solid contact angle during flow, with consequent release of oil trapped by capillary forces. Implications of these observations with regard to improved waterflood efficiencies are discussed. INTRODUCTION The need for finding improved methods of oil production is amply illustrated by the large volume of oil considered economically unrecoverable by existing production practice. Water flooding has long been an excellent method of secondary recovery. However, even in those areas of a formation which are well swept by a water flood, 20 per cent or more of the oil remains trapped within the formation and is not recovered. This trapping of oil within the pores of the rock structure results primarily from interfacial forces. If these interfacial forces were altered, it is possible that the trapped oil could be released and recovered. The addition of surface-active agents to a water flood to alter the interfacial properties of the oil-water-solid system has received considerable attention as a method of increasing oil recovery. Studies of surfactant treatment have yielded varied and, in some cases, apparently conflicting results. Increased oil recovery using surface-active agents has been reported by a number of investigators. Others have found that use of surfactants in a water flood either has no effect upon oil recovery or decreases it. Since surface-active agents tend to alter the formation wettability and oil-water interfacial tension simultaneously, several investigators have tried to determine the role these two factors play in oil recovery. Data have been presented which indicate that the most desirable condition for the solid surface is strongly water-wet. Other results indicate that, although breakthrough recovery may be less, the greatest ultimate recovery is obtained when neutral wettability prevails.", " The desirability of low interfacial tension seems to depend upon the wettability of the formation. Reports of higher recoveries, when the interfacial tension is high in a water-wet system and low in an oil-wet system, are at odds with reports of increased recovery in water-wet systems when surfactants which decrease the interfacial tension are added to the water flood. A review of previous work studying the effects of using surface-active agents in a water flood shows that these agents produce widely different effects and that opinions as to the role of the various interfacial properties are diverse. The consensus, however, is that the interfacial properties are quite important in the displacement of oil from a porous medium by water. Even in those investigations where appreciable increases in oil recovery resulted from treatment with a surface-active agent, economic considerations generally made practical application of the treatment unattractive because surfactants tend to be adsorbed within the formation. This adsorption would necessitate using large quantities of surfactant if all of the flood water were treated to contain a given surfactant concentration, even if this concentration were quite low. Preston and Calhoun suggested that the principles of chromatography could be applied to the use of surface-active agents as a means of increasing oil recovery. An experimental program was carried out to improve the low-temperature ductjlity of tungsten through the combined use of dispersed oxides for grain-size control and Groups VII and VIII metal additions for matrix softening. Separate binary -alloy studies showed that increasing amounts of finely dispersed thoria or zirconia and critical amounts of rhenium, osmium, and iridium were effective in significantly reducing the ductile-to -brittle bend transition temperature of tungsten as well as in increasing its re crystallization temper - LIKE most of the high-melting point bcc metals, tungsten undergoes a marked transition from ductile to brittle behavior with decreasing temperatures. The material factors which influence the transition temperature include grain size, metal purity, and the presence of dispersed phases. ature and decreasing its recrystallized grain size. The beneficial effects shown by each of these additions on transition temperature and grain size in binary combinations appeared to be additive in tevnary combinations. Thus, combined additions of 2 to 8 vol pct thoria with 5 pct Re, 0.87 pct Os, or 0.30 pct Ir were effective in lowering the transition temperature of tungsten pom 2000 to 75"C, increasing its re crystallization temperature from 1600 to 1800°C, and decreasing its recrystallized gain size from 1175 to 6800 grains per sq mm. The mechanism by which these factors are operable in tungsten is not yet clearly understood. Nevertheless, it has become increasingly apparent that the interrelationship of grain size and matrix composition governs to a large extent the degree of low-temperature ductility which can be achieved. Though it is not possible to accurately assess the relative importance of these variables, the available evidence suggests that, at low temperatures, grain-size effects predominate over purity effects. This was indicated in recent studies by Allen, Maykuth, and Jaffee,&apos; involving single crystals containing 20 to 40 ppm 0 and 1 to 30 ppm C. Thus, while each

Thin foils made from the gold-rich region of- short (0.15 mm)Au-Ag diffusion couples annealed at 880°C for 1 hr were examined in ax electron microscope and the structures were compared with that of pure gold subjected to identical heat treatments. The couples underwent Plastic deformation (bending) during the diffusional anneal. The foils prepared from the diffusion zone have a higher dislocation density and incidence of subboundaries than pure gold. The plastic bending of the couple can be interpreted in terms of the climb of edge dislocations, which are pavallel to the bend axis, along the direction of diffusion. THE interaction of lattice defects during interdiffu-sion between two metals has been considered by several investigators. In particular, da Silva and Mehl,1 Barnes,&apos; and Bardeen and Herring3 have proposed models based on interactions between point and line defects to account for the Kirkendall effect (marker movement). Each of these models is based on dislocation climb, which can either add or remove lattice planes, induced by an under- or supersaturation of vacancies. A theoretical treatment of the nucleation and growth of voids by the condensation of vacancies has been presented by Seitz.4 Stresses can arise in a binary diffusion couple as a result of the vacancy flux and the gradient in the lattice parameter. rinkmman&apos; has investigated the effects of diffusion-induced stresses on void formation; the results of his analysis suggest that voids can form and grow under the influence of these stresses in the absence of an excess vacancy concentration. The relationships between vacancy supersaturation and diffusion-induced stresses and void formation have been elucidated also by Balluffi and seigle6 who concluded that the stress generated by a vacancy supersaturation aids the growth of voids. Experimental evidence which indirectly shows that stresses are produced by chemical diffusion has been obtained by several researchers.2,7-9 This evidence consists in part of the observation by light microscopy of the formation of subgrains, a process characteristic of the high-temperature deformation of some metals during creep.&apos;0 More striking, however, is the plastic bending of short (0.2 mm) Cu-Ni couples observed by Barnes2 and of boron-doped silicon crystals reported by Queisser.9 Diffusion-induced dislocations in iron and silicon have been investigated by Ainslie et a1.11and Schwutte and Queisser,12 respectively, the former using transmission electron microscopy and the latter an X-ray transmission technique. Matthews and Crawford13 observed the formation of boundaries by the climb of interfacial misfit dislocations in thin, vapor-deposited Au-Pd couples diffused in situ in an electron microscope. In order to obtain additional information on the phenomena associated with defect interaction and diffusion-induced stresses in binary couples, an electron transmission study of foils prepared from the diffusion zone of short Au-Ag couples was undertaken. The initial objective was to investigate the processes occurring at various points of the diffusion zone. Subsequent research demonstrated that foils could be prepared only from the gold-rich region of the diffusion zone using the technique described herein. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Preparation and Annealing of the Diffusion Couples. The couples were made from annealed, high-purity (99.999 pct). polycrvstalline gold and silver sheets (0.075 mm thick). Shall (0.075 by 5 by 17 mm) elec-tropolished coupons of gold and silver were pressure-bonded by heating the two metals in a graphite device to 770°C and holding at this temperature for approximately 30 min. INTRODUCTION The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is affiliated with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) but operates with a separate staff and funding. It supplements the activities of the Bank by providing, to private business, equity and loans without government guarantees in whatever form and combination most suited to the project. IFC frequently complements the Bank&apos;s activities by utilizing, for example, the Bank&apos;s public sector infrastructure activities to support IFC&apos;s private sector projects. In the case of local financial institutions especially, IFC collaborates with the Bank by providing technical and financial assistance. IFC is the world&apos;s largest multilateral organization which finances private sector business in developing countries. IFC&apos;s fundamental purpose is to promote the economic development of its developing member countries through the support of the private sector. Of the 124 member countries of IFC, more than 100 are developing countries. Since it began operations in 1956, IFC has been associated with more than 2,000 companies and financial institutions in supporting over 700 business ventures in more than 80 countries. The total capital costs of these projects exceeds $26,000 million. In the 1984 fiscal year, IFC approved 62 projects in 37 countries with a total project cost of $2,473 million. IFC will make investments only if sufficient capital cannot be obtained on reasonable terms from other sources. IFC often serves as the catalyst for a project by encouraging other investors--from inside and outside the host country--to make their own equity investments along with the local sponsor for a particular project. IFC&apos;S SPECIAL ROLE The significance of IFC&apos;s role extends beyond just its financing and technical assistance: IFC&apos;s capability to raise investor confidence in a project and to help all the participants to arrive at mutually satisfactory investment arrangements is its distinctive character. Direct Investments IFC invests in all types of projects both large and small. Heavy industrial ventures not only supply essential materials and equipment for other domestic enterprises, but also earn foreign exchange through exports. In recent years, increased emphasis has been placed on agriculture and agribusiness products, aquaculture, food and food processing, and other renewable and nonrenewable resources such as metals and energy. [ ] An overall objective of IFC is to assist entrepreneurs and others in the private sector raise the needed capital for business ventures. IFC does not compete with, nor seek to replace private initiative and capital.
