Neutralization of acidity by addition of alkaline materials is a commonly used method to treat acid mine drainage. However, this procedure requires large amounts of reagents based on acid-base accounting. The potential use of organic additives in preventing or ameliorating acid mine drainage was investigated in this research. The tests were conducted in weathering columns using refuse samples from a coal cleaning plant. Both cationic and anionic compounds were tested. For a comparison, tests were made in the presence of limestone and lime. The results show that some of the reagents substantially retarded the rate of oxidation whereas others even enhanced it. The suppression of the rate of pyrite oxidation was ascribed to surface chelation. Formation of surface compounds prevented the pyrite particles from further oxidation. Such a treatment required only small quantities of reagents since the reaction was confined to the surface.

Dissolution of gold with sodium bromate solutions of various compositions was studied by using a rotating disc technique. The role of bromide ion, acid and externally added bromine was examined. It was found that sodium bromate could not dissolve gold in the absence of either acid or bromide ion, or both. When acid was absent, no bromine necessary for gold dissolution could be produced. When bromide ion was absent, formation of soluble gold bromide species, AuBr,-, was not possible. Bromate concentration had a complex effect, and it was dependant on bromide ion concentration. For fixed initial bromide ion concentration, gold dissolution rate increased with sodium bramate concentration increase until certain level, beyond which further increase of bromate concentration decreased the gold dissolution rate. The negative effect of bromate was explained by the depletion of necessary bromide ion. Sulfuric acid concentration effect was a function of initially present bromine.

The Crown Minerals Act 1991 has introduced some significant changes to the New Zealand mining industry, not the least of which relate to the ability of miners to obtain access to land to conduct mining activities. This paper briefly reviews the relevant provisions of the Crown Minerals Act dealing with access arrangements, considers some typical features of access arrangements and examines a number of areas where problems may arise.

Improvements in today's maintenance practices are mandatory as more complex and productive machines evolve in the mining industry. By keeping machine reliability high through improved maintenance procedures, overall mining costs can be reduced. The Bureau of Mines is investigating diagnostic maintenance systems for underground mining machinery. A hydraulic expert diagnostic system and an electric motor predictive diagnostic system have been designed and installed on a Joy 16CM continuous miner. An electrical diagnostic system has been designed and installed on a Joy 14CM continuous miner. Each system is functionally described and the relative merits of expert diagnostic systems versus algorithmic diagnostic systems are discussed.

Mechanical models are established in accordance with the degree of mining on both sides of the coal pillar, and formulae were derived which calculated the superposition stress distribution and the width of the plastic region. The stability of the coal pillar was analysed and a reasonable size of coal pillar determined, in accordance with the elastic region rate. Further practical examples for the stability of the coal pillar are calculated and simulated.

The Golden Cross mine commenced production in December 1991. Both open pit and underground mines produce 1000 tonnes of ore per day. Mining techniques are discussed along with results and variations to proposed methods of extracting the ore.

The INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel. chromium and Iron from a wide variety of metal containing waste-streams. This now includes the recovery of metals from spent acid solutions such as chromic acid etching I1quids. nJcke1 and chromium plating solutions; stainless and superalloy pickling solutions. etc. In addition. hazardous electric furnace stainless steel and. superalloy baghouse bags can be processed so as to recover the valuable metall1cs. A detailed review of the above new recovery techniques w1ll be discussed as well as the current operating methods used at INMETCO.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines recently identified a significant new source of scandium in an Oklahoma tantalum waste residue (approximately 0.24 pct Sc). Because scandium is a strategic and critical metal which the Department of Defense has classified for special consideration, the Bureau is researching methods of recovering scandium and associated metals from this and other process residues. A variety of operating parameters were evaluated to determine the best technique for recovering scandium. Testing showed that by sulfating the residue at temperatures as low as 150' C for reaction times as short as 0.5 hr, over 94 pct of the scandium converted to a water soluble form. Solvent extraction using DEHPA selectively recovered 100 pct of the scandium from the water leach solution.

As part of an investigation aimed at improving the health and safety and competitiveness of the mining industry, the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the application of common offset radar profiling, using a 250-MHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system, for the detection of fractures in igneous rock. A series of radar reflection surveys were conducted to detect and delineate the extent of fracturing at various granodiorite and gabbro quarries and outcrops located in Minnesota. The application of radar profiling for detecting joints, sheeting fractures, shear zones, and depth to water table was demonstrated to be feasible with minimal processing. Radar reflection interpretations were verified by visual inspection of the rock mass and field mapping of local structure. The radar reflection section provides a simple, rapid, and cost-effective means for mapping of shallow (less than 10 m) small-scale fractures (greater than 0.25 cm) in igneous rock masses (characteristic of velocities between 0.061 m/ns for gabbro and 0.125 m/ns for granodiorite). Depth or distance estimates to fractures are within 10 pct of the actual, and time-shift compensation is necessary only when topographic irregularities exceed 30 cm.

The Olympic Dam Mine is a large, mechanised, underground operation currently producing 2.2 million tonnes-per-year of copper/uranium/gold ore. The mine is accessed via one shaft and one service decline. An additional 13 raise bored ventilation shafts have been completed to-date.Ventilation requirements are stringent in order to provide adequate dilution and removal of diesel fumes, radon gas/daughters and heat generated from both engines and wall rock.Due to the nature of the orebodies, the mine workings will continue to expand laterally necessitating the addition of at least one major surface raise every year.

The magnitude and orientation of the in situ stressfield has been determined as a key factor in controlling the stability of openings for both coal mine development and extraction. Monitoring of roadway and pillar behaviour in conjunction with numerical analysis has identified specific stress control measures that have been successfully applied to improve productivity in underground coal mining operations. The influence of the major horizontal stressfield on the stability of openings has been identified at a wide range of sites including mines in Australia, Britain, the USA, New Zealand and Japan. Stress mapping, stress measurement and stress monitoring techniques have been applied to define the in situ stress regime and, together with the correlation of measurements of rock deformation and rock reinforcement behaviour, has enabled appropriate stress control measures to be developed. Stress control measures for development headings have required the selection of roadway orientation, roadway sequencing, reinforcement density and pillar size. The monitoring of behaviour at a range of trial sites has confirmed significant improvements in development stability. Stress control measures for longwall extraction have required rational selection of longwall orientation and extraction direction. Where a mine layout design incorporating the optimum longwall layout design has not been possible, the use of sacrificial roadways has been successfully applied to protect key roadways from stress concentration effects. The paper concerns an unconventional, yet promising, use of waste magnesite dust and fines. In India a significant amount of this dust is generated from some of the integrated iron and steel industries, refractory and cement plants, during calcination of raw magnesite. However. it is possible to utilize this dust, which is normally a waste, conveniently and economically for the production of magnesium. chemicals. A bench scale study was carried out to determine the rate of formation of sulfated com¬pounds of Mg.Ca,and Fe, inter alla, present in the dust system containing MeO constituents (in which Me=Mg.Ca,Fe,Si,Al etc.) Effects of various process parameters, which affect the reaction rate as also the purity of the product ,were also studied. Some work carried out to develop the process flow charts involving the salient steps to produce magnesium chemicals commercially is reported in the paper .

Techniques for the optimisation of open pit design and development are now accepted as standard practice in the mining industry. These techniques are used to analyse the impacts on project profitability of factors such as product price, slope design criteria and equipment selection. A fundamental assumption used in this type of analysis is that dump and stockpile designs and sequencing are predetermined. The cost of haulage for a typical truck shovel mining operation is in the range of 25 - 50 per cent of mine operating costs. Substantial cost savings can be achieved by optimisation of dump design and location of associated road and ramp systems.Factors which affect both the operation and total cost of dumping include; Ramp gradients and location, road design, dump placement and shape, dumping height, slope design (interim and final), slope stability, environmental requirements and equipment selection. This paper discusses these factors and their effects on the total mining operation and project value. Reference is made to case studies in which some of these factors have had a significant impact.

To date, human space exploration has been almost completely dependent on the use of resources carried with astronauts and cosmonauts from the surface of the Earth. The only exception to this has been the harvesting of solar energy to power space stations like Skylab, Salyut and Mir for long-duration missions. This dependence on materials which must be transported into orbit at costs in excess of $5000 per pound is the fundamental limiting factor in space exploration and operations. It is likely that launch costs can eventually be greatly reduced by means of such innovations as true single stage to orbit vehicles, aerospace planes, or serial electromagnetic or laser launch systems. However, the Earth will always remain an expensive source of materials for space construction and for basic commodities such as propellant and life support liquids and gasses. Fortunately, abundant sources of materials exist which are already in space, outside of the Earth's deep gravity well.

Ore reserve estimation at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. open-pit oil sands mine in Northern Alberta has evolved since the project's inception. Early techniques followed a conventional petroleum reservoir analysis format, with relatively widely spaced drill holes and semiquantitative grade data. Experience has developed a more standard mining approach, including classification of geological materials by both lithology and sedimentary origin, timely and multi-purpose drill holes, precise analytical data, empirical recovery factors, a computerized geological data base, and an orebody block model. Future efforts will involve enhancement of existing techniques, use of geostatistical algorithms, quantification of confidence limits, and improved control of the ore model by geological parameters.

An important consideration in any mining operation is waste disposal management. Tailings management at Macraes gold mine allows for the disposal of tailings into fully engineered embankment dams and overburden material to be incorporated as construction material into those embankment dams. Various electrical and electromagnetic (EM) geophysical techniques are currently being evaluated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for their effectiveness in the detection and monitoring of electrically conductive (1 to 5 S/m) lixiviant (leach solution) to depths of 600 m, either above or below the water table. These techniques include magnetotellurics (MT) , controlled source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT), resistivity and focused resistivity, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), frequency-domain electromagnetics (FEM), and time-domain electromagnetics (TEM). Of these techniques, TEM may be the most effective, but CSAMT and focused resistivity also hold promise. Geophysical computer modeling of the borehole TEM technique was conducted based on an idealized geoelectric section (layered earth) with characteristics based on the Santa Cruz porphyry copper deposit near Cas a Grande, AZ. Layer resistivities and thicknesses were obtained from geophysical data and geologic logs available from the site. Modeling of borehole TEM in both preleach and during leach situations was conducted. Simulating the TEM method using computer modeling proved to be encouraging since there were substantial differences between leached and nonleached responses. The modeling does not prove the effectiveness of TEM in the field, but does indicate that detection of deep lixiviant zones is theoretically possible.

Silver cyanide adsorbs extremely well on activated carbons. This suggests that the addition of soluble silver salts to trace cyanide containing waste streams should allow efficient cyanide removal with active carbon. Silver losses, however, would make this method expensive and also objectionable, since silver has biocidal effects. When silver impregnated carbon is used, these problems are overcome. Test work has shown that such silver remains on or in the active carbon, that cyanide concentrations can be reduced to the level of detection (< 5 ppb) and that the silver impregnated carbon can be reactivated with equipment similar to that now in use at gold milling operations. Initial results on the type of carbon, the impregnation procedure and the level of silver, and the effect of repeated regeneration are discussed.

The concept of hypochlorite treatment prior to cyanidation in the heap leaching of low grade carbonaceous gold ores is discussed. Laboratory column leach tests using a low grade carbonaceous ore were performed to investigate the effects of pH, hypochlorite consumption and concentration, and bed height on total gold extraction. At high pH, hypochlorite stability increases and thus, hypochlorite consumption decreases. At room temperature, total gold extraction is proportional to hypochlorite consumption. However, at some point additional hypochlorite consumption does not increase gold extraction. Gold recoveries of 10% and 80% are achieved at 12 and 167 lb/ton hypochlorite consumption, respectively. Increasing hypochlorite concentration increases the rate of extraction. For a given hypochlorite consumption, gold extraction increased with decreasing ore bed height. Finally, using calcium hypochlorite results in higher gold extraction than using sodium hypochlorite at a fixed hypochlorite consumption.

Measurement of pressure distribution under the base plate of the Hemscheidt 2-leg 800-ton shield was performed underground for two shifts using 12 pressure cells installed in two rows, one each under each split base plate. Pressure distribution was uneven depending on contact condition. In general the highest base pressure occurred at 1/3 of the base plate contact length from the rear edge. The resultant was near vertical, and the pressure under the tail side split base plate was always higher than the head side. For comparison, pressure distribution on the canopy and under the base plate was also measured under controlled conditions at the USBM&apos;s Mine Simulator Testing Facilities in Pittsburgh, PA. A total of 45 tests were conducted under several simulated contact conditions. The results showed that the actual contact area is highly dependent on the compliance of the immediate roof and floor due to the sloped canopy tip and a base lifting device under the base tip. The loading distribution tends to change in magnitude and profile as the leg pressure increases. The base lifting device exaggerates the high toe loading on the base plate characteristics of this type of shield support.
