The comminution circuit at the plant has experienced severe problems arising from a feed containing much larger amounts of clay and having a higher moisture content than expected. Three solutions were proposed: replacement of the crushing circuit by tooth roll-type crushers; using washing drums; and introducing primary autogenous/semi-autogenous millling instead of crushing. Computer simulations studied the effects of the first two solutions on the circuit capacity. Laboratory and industrial scale ball mill batch grinding tests were carried out. The parameters of a kinetic model were determined. The ball mill circuit was sampled and operating model parameters were calculated. The ability of batch grinding parameters to represent the operating conditions was studied. Tests failed to find acceptable model parameters, but parameters from an industrial size batch mill were found to be suitable for simulation studies. The simulations indicated that a continuous feed of -12 mm provided by tooth roll crushers would maintain the desired capacity. Increasing the feed size to -25 mm would reduce the capacity by 8-15%. The use of washing drums could also solve the capacity problem, but small fluctuations in water flow rates might result in problems of excess water in the grinding circuit.

The main assets of a mining company are its orebodies; the second are the people who find and use them.The graphs in Figure 1 were derived from a paper by Rob Macdonald of Rothschild Australia presented to The AusIMM Centenary Conference in Adelaide earlier this year. They show that the value of the industry on the Australian Stock Exchange halved over the past decade, despite the re-investment of capital equivalent to its full market capitalisation. Why is this so? The average dividend yields for the ASX Mining Index was never above five per cent during that period and barely averaged 2.5 per cent. Why then is $Ai million capital re-investment per employee since 1960 not enough to generate a rate of return to investors better than lousy bank interest? Do the investing public no longer regard our industry's assets to be world class?

Determine the appropriate spacing and alarm levels for carbon monoxide and smoke sensors used for fire detection in underground coal mine conveyor belt entries. Background Fire represents one of the most severe hazards in underground coal mines. Early-warning fire detection in underground coal mines is essential to successfully implement and execute evacuation and control measures. Both carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors have the ability to provide reliable early-warning capability, provided that they are spaced properly and set at the appropriate alarm levels. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a series of large-scale experiments where a small coal fire was used to ignite a conveyor belt at air velocities of 0.76 to 6.1 m/s. The test configuration was purposely designed to model a worst-case fire scenario for fires that develop within conveyor belt entries in underground coal mines. During the tests, CO and smoke levels were continuously measured to determine alarm times and alarm levels as the fire intensity progressed. The data from these tests indicated that for a given sensor spacing, the time to reach a preset alarm threshold depends upon the belt entry air velocity and cross-sectional area. Analysis of this data resulted in the equations and nomographs for CO and smoke sensor spacing, and alarm levels contained in Bureau of Mines RI 9380, "Fire Detection for Conveyor Belt Entries."

A method new to Australia was used for sinking a vertical shaft at Broken Hill in the development of Pasminco Southern Operations No 5 Ventilation Shaft. The 6 m diameter shaft of 820 m depth was planned with a construction method which allowed access for ground support as sinking proceeded by mechanical excavation.The vertical shaft boring machine, known as the V-Mole, was originally developed in West Germany. The machine operates in a manner similar to a full face TBM but vertically and the cuttings drop down a previously constructed raise. The raise is subject to stringent tolerance on verticality and must remain stable for the duration of reaming.

Several experiments were conducted to determine the rates of heat transfer coefficients of CaO-SiO2-A1203-FeO slags at temperatures in the range 1623-1823 K The experimental technique involved measuring heating rates of a solid specimen, sub¬merged in slag phase, using a temperature probe made of Pt\ 10%Rh-Pt. Effect of %FeO (3-10%), %FeS (0.1-0.68%), %P205 (0.2-3.0%), %MgO(5-6%), and %MnO (0.96-3.84%) present in the slag on overall heat transfer coefficient, U, of slags was investigated. Simple first order heat balance equation in combination with experimental plots rising temperature of solid specimen versus time were employed to determine the values of U. The values of U determined in the present investigation were present in the range of 70-260 cal/Ks.m2. The value of U increased with increasing the slag temperature. The values of U were not effected by increased amounts of sulfur in the slag phase. The increased concentrations of MgO, FeO, MnO, and P205 in the slag phase decreased the values of U. On the other hand, the increased amounts of Fe2O3 in the slag phase increased the value of U. Comparison of the results, obtained using the slag bath stirred by argon injection, with those determined without any stirring indicated that both radiative and conductive heat transfer mechanisms are important even at high temperatures.

Nevada is primarily known today for its nation-leading production of gold and silver. However, industrial mineral production continues to play an important role in providing construction materials to help make the state the fastest growing in the United States. Aggregate production in Nevada was about 20 million tons in 1991. Most of that was used in construction in the fast-growing Las Vegas area. The state leads the nation in the production of barite and mined magnesite and has significant production of lithium carbonate, diatomite and gypsum. Other industrial minerals produced in the state include specialty clays, silica, lime and dolomite and relatively small production in salt, perlite and dimension stone. Industrial minerals operations are subject to state and federal permitting requirements, especially in the areas of air and water quality and mined land reclamation. As in all segments of the mineral producing industries throughout the nation, the amount and complexity of regulations affecting industrial minerals has increased significantly in recent years. Nevada is no exception.

Advances in the development and application of in situ imaging of mineral processing operations using electrical tomography techniques are reviewed and illustrated with case studies relating to pneumatic conveying, mixing and centrifugal separation processes. The potential for applying these methods to full three-dimensional visualisation of the dynamic behaviour of flow in pipelines and separators, and the resulting consequences for process-modelling strategies, are discussed.

The existing copper electrorefining tankhouse of Jinchuan Nonferrous Metals Complex (JNC) was commissioned in 1986 for refining blister copper anodes. Blister copper is produced by reverberating chalcocite separated from converter high grade nickel-copper matter by means of flotation. Special chemical analysis of the anodes shows, a composition of 93.02 - 95.72 % copper, 3.0 - 4.96 % nickel and 0.5 - 1.23 % sulfur. The wide range of composition makes the electrorefining process fairly different from others throughout the world. The initial nickel content of 20 ppm and sulfur 40 ppm or more in copper cathodes are reduced to 8.5 ppm and 11 ppm respectively. Since 1986 the tankhouse has undergone significant evolutionary modifications and implementations to ameliorate cathodes quality desirably. The important fact is that the N-additive was utilized through many studies and pilot and field trials successfully. While our primary purpose is to improve chemical quality of the cathodes, tankhouse capacity is increased considerably and the process is perfected satisfactorily. The tankhouse is described with special emphasis on JINCHUAN PROCESS. The upgrading of our product by the utilization of the N-additive is highlighted. The other aspects of the tankhouse including spent electrolyte treatment and by product nickel sulfate manufacturing are briefed as well. "Documented underground fill failures have resulted because of the lack of adequate knowledge concerning fill strength and other physical parameters, as well as to a lack of consistent quality of fill materials being used by operators. On the basis of literature review and correspondence with backfill operators at 18 mines throughout the province of Ontario, non-systematic quality control procedures have been shown to exist, both within different levels of single operations and between separate mining operations, which act to provide inferior engineered fill materials and erratic application response in situ.Assessment of existing procedures set by mine operators for determining backfill physical parameters, and recommendation of optimum fill material testing and manufacturing guidelines are presented in this paper.A series of standard fill characterization test procedures are recommended to provide substantial, though not comprehensive, fill behaviour review. The purpose of these recommendations is to propose industry standards for backfill quality review. Data acquired could be utilized for fill design functions and as a means of comparing fill quality parameters between sites in a regular and more systematic fashion than is presently done."

In the past marine mining technology has focused on bulk mining of base metals from polymetallic massive sulfides. This has not been very successful because of the relatively low unit value of these metals and other reasons such as water depth, etc.. The process of gold enrichment in hydrothermal deposits is controlled through five different factors: (1) nature and source of the solution, (2) source of the gold, (3) a mechanism for mobilizing and transporting, (4) a mechanism for deposition, and (5) a mechanism to preserve the deposit. Gold has been identified in marine polymetallic massive sulfides from various locations on the ocean floor (e.g., spreading centers, seamounts) with contents ranging up to 5 ppm Au. This is within the current range of 1.0 to 7.0 ppm gold content which classifies gold ores. The gold appears to have been derived during hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust. Until the present there has been little attention to the possibility of mining gold or other precious metals in the marine environment. However, the magnitude of hydrothermal alteration (seawater can penetrates to a depth of 5 km into the oceanic crust) and primary gold contents of the rocks in the pathway of the fluid indicates that major gold deposits must have formed on or in the ocean floor, but they have not been found. To find a big deposit might only take an exploration model exclusively designed for gold exploration on the ocean floor.

A major advantage of the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process is the conversion of sulphide sulphur in zinc concentrate to elemental sulphur during pressure leaching. Elemental sulphur can be recovered as a marketable byproduct by flotation of the leach residue, and melting and filtration of the sulphur flotation concentrate. The behaviour and deportment of sulphur during pressure leaching, flotation, and melting and filtration are discussed in this paper using data obtained from the treatment of a wide variety of zinc concentrates in the laboratory miniplant at the Sherritt Research Centre. The quality of the elemental sulphur byproduct and a process for purifying the sulphur are also Presented.

A quantitative method for predicting the mechanical properties of zinc alloys is proposed on the basis of the molecular orbital calculation of electronic structures. A new parameter which is the s-orbital energy level, Mk , of alloying elements in zinc was introduced into this method. This Mk parameter correlates with the electronegativity and the atomic radius of elements. The compositional average of this parameter varied linearly with the tensile strength and the hardness of commercial alloys and some alloys developed by Mitsui. This electronic method was very convenient in designing high performance zinc alloys efficiently.

The Kauri Block (Hauraki Hill) andMatawai Valley epithermal vein systems, near Coromandel township, are hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesites and Mesozoic greywackes of the Coromandel VolcanicZone. The hydrological setting of both geothermal systems was probably that of an andesitic volcanic arc. Two types of veins are recognised: 1. Simple veins composed of fine comb quartz, and 2. Complex (breccia) veins composed of vein fragments of sulphide-bearing, chalcedonic silica cemented by saccharoidal and fine comb quartz.   Pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and gold form the ore minerals. Both deposits historically exploited hypogene and supergene bonanza gold.   At Hauraki Hill, breccia veins up to 7m wide contain abundant fragments of recrystallised colloform banded-crustiform textured quartz veins ('Golden Cross' style) and were probably major channels for ascending deep mineralising fluids. Alteration assemblages are zoned with the higher elevations of Hauraki Hill-Bunkers Hill characterised by strong kaolinite alteration whereas deeper levels are dominated by illitic clays.   At Matawai, complex veins and hydrothermal breccias pinch and swell, and inflect, within a total width of veining and alteration that exceeds 50 m. The greywacke host rocks are altered to an assemblage of illitesmectite, quartz, chlorite and pyrite although there are pockets of kaolinite.   The proposed genesis of veins and ores in both deposits invokes episodic rapid mixing (quenching) of hot mineralising reservoir fluids with cool acid condensate waters, whilst acidification and increased fO2 triggered gold deposition. These hydrothermal systems heated up during their later stages and at Matawai visible gold was deposited from a late mesothermal stage. The main conclusion is that the northwest CVZ has excellent potential for large gold deposits (= 30 tonnes contained gold).

Although cyanidation has been universally applied in the processing of gold and silver ores, the search for less toxic alternatives continues. Difficulties encountered in processing ores containing oxidized copper minerals and the inherently slow kinetics of cyanidation have generated a renewed interest in thiosulfate leaching. This process, as well as the catalytic effects of copper ion, were well recognized and widely applied towards the end of the past century. In this study, the effects of copper, ammonia, and thiosulfate concentrations on gold dissolution were investigated using the rotating disk technique. Extraction of gold and silver from an oxidized copper-bearing ore was also studied utilizing a statistical experimental design, and these results were displayed in the form of contour plots.

Under an inert atmosphere, the temperature enhancement of nickel bearing pyrrhotite irradiated by microwave was measured with a special metal-sheathed thermocouple and the non-isothermal rate equations were obtained. Under the controlled oxygen potential of the reacting gas in the microwave field, over 90% sulfur contained in the pyrrhotite is converted into elemental sulfur directly, the iron and the nickel are transformed into FeO,, NiO, NiFe,O, and FeSiO,. Results of metal electrodeposition experiments conducted at the University of Brussels and University of Missouri-Rolla over the past few years are reviewed in terms of the relationship and impact on industrial processes. Examples are cited from common electrowinning, electrorefining, or electroplating operations for copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt and silver. The following topics are considered : metallographic structure, crystallographic texture, surface morphology, nucleation and growth, additive monitoring and effects, high current density, substrate related properties including adhesion. The studies were conducted on a variety of scales from laboratory beaker tests to full sized pilot and industrial operating plants.

This paper reports the results of a literature review carried out on nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steels and their properties. It was found that a large volume of work has been carried out on the subject, particularly with regard to the more common stainless steels such as types 304 and 316. No work appears to have been conducted on the highly alloyed steels such as type 310S. Nitrogen has been found to increase the stability of the austenite in stainless steels and to impart significant improvements in the mechanical and corrosion properties of these alloys. Importantly, nitrogen appears to increase both the ductility and the strength of austenitic stainless steels over a wide range of temperatures.

Century is a shale hosted zinc, lead, silver deposit developed within gently folded, Proterozoic Lawn Hill Formation shales and siltstones, approximately 250 kilometres north-northwest of Mount Isa, comprising 118 million tonnes of stratiform mineralisation, averaging 10.2 per cent ,,inc, 1.5 per cent lead and 36 grams per tonne silver. The deposit is largely overlain by Cambrian limestone and younger Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, outcropping at only two places. Small discordant lode lead-silver deposits formed the basis of relatively small scale mining activity in the area for almost 100 years, exploration tenement covering the deposit being granted to CRAE exactly 100 years after the first mining leases were pegged in the area in 1887.Stratiform mineralisation occurs within three distinct blocks, bounded by normal faults and the unconformity between Lawn Hill Formation and overlying Cambrian limestones. The Termite Range Fault, a major northwest trending, regional scale fault system occurs adjacent to the northeast deposit boundary, while the Magazine Hill Fault, possibly a component of the east trending Little Range Fault system, forms the southern boundary of the deposit.

This paper provides a brief look at a proposed short-longwall for coal, development. The proposed method is an attempt to realize the advantages of longwall mining in deposits that, historically, would only be minable by continuous mining methods. An overview of the proposed layout, development requirements, production rate, ventilation scheme and other associated features is provided. This mining method could help operators in above-drainage seams where minable areas are smaller. It may also have application in areas that are peppered with gas wells and in environmentally sensitive areas which preclude the use of conventional longwalls.
