Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. This note deals about the controlled demolition work for the dismantling of an industrial structure in San Seplocro, Italy. The structure to be demolished, the FLOWERS SILOS, consisted in a multilevel reinforced concrete frame supporting r.c. silos and steel silos. This was standing near civil buildings and was adjoining a warehouse that had to be safeguarded for being renewed.

"The old Albert Silver Mine is a polymetallic deposit comprising concentrations of CuPb- Zn-Ag-U-F within a set of sub-parallel quartz-hematite veins which occur within the fine-grained apical phase of the 2050 Ma old A-type Bushveld granites. Mineralization occurs as an early pyritechalcopyrite- arsenopyrite-galena-sphalerite-(argentiferous) tetrahedrite paragenesis followed by a later, more oxidized assemblage comprising chlorite-hematite-fluorite-pitchblende. Accumulation of metals appears to have taken place at the interface between a coarse-grained porphyritic granite and an overlying fine-grained phase: veins occur in the latter and represent leakage of magmatic fluids from the differentiated, water-saturated, subjacent granite.Mineralization processes in the Bushveld granites are believed to be related to long-lived circulation of dominantly magmatic fluids stimulated by the high heat productive capacity of the host rocks. Endo- and exogranitic tin-tungsten and base metal mineralization formed during an evolving hydrothermal system that lasted for several hundred million years, forming innumerable small- to mediumscale polymetallic deposits. At the Albert Silver Mine, unroofmg of the cover sequences at circa 1600 Ma to 1700 Ma resulted in the incursion of lower-temperature, high-f02 meteoric fluids which remobilized the earlier sulfides and introduced the paragenetically late U-F mineralization."

"Combustion Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVDSM ), an open air, flame assisted CVD process, is under development. The CCVD process produces non-line-of-sight, epitaxial deposition. Materials deposited include YBa2Cu3Ox' Y2BaCuOx, BaTiO3, Y2FesOI2, ZrO2, yttria stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ), partially (yttria) stabilized ZrO2 (PSZ), and amorphous silica. Two modifications of the CCVD process are being studied. Liquid fuel CCVD deposition, involves the combustion of an organic solvent that contains dissolved reagents carrying the desired coating cations. Gaseous fuel CCVD deposition uses a flammable gas as fuel. A non-flammable solution containing dissolved reagents is either aspirated into the flame or mixed with the fuel gas as an aerosol prior to its combustion. Substrates to be coated are held near the flames' ends.IntroductionThin films and coatings can be deposited using a wide variety of techniques including chemical vapor deposition (CVD). CVD is ""a materials synthesis process whereby constituents of the vapor phase react chemically near or on a substrate surface to form a solid product.""lIn conventional CVD processing, gases carrying coating constituents flow into a reaction vessel where deposition occurs onto a heated substrate. The deposition process is often conducted at reduced pressure. Both cold and hot wall reaction chambers are used. Heat can be provided by a resistance furnace, rf induction, or high-intensity radiation lamps. Plasma, microwave, photo, laser, RF, and electron-enhanced CVD processes have been developed. The necessity of using a reaction vessel limits the substrate size and affects coating economics. Although most CVD depositions are performed as batch processes, continuous deposition can be accomplished with the use of appropriate hardware.The chemical vapor deposition of thin, dense oxide films has been accomplished in the open atmosphere with a flame assisted process. The process is called combustion chemical vapor deposition (CCVDSM).2 Two modifications of the CCVD process have been developed. The liquid fuel CCVD process involves the combustion of an organic solvent in which reagents (containing the coating cations) are dissolved. The gaseous fuel CCVD process uses a flammable gas as fuel. The feasibility of producing low carbon (LC) ferromanganese (FeMn) by lime-'ore' melt refining of high-grade ferromanganese silicon (FeMnSi) was investigated. Thermodynamic simulations demonstrated significant benefits in moving from a single-stage ladle operation to a two-stage counter-current reladling operation (to emulate the commercial Penin Process). The theoretical alloy silicon content was predicted to be refined from 1.57 to 0.005 per cent silicon, at a 6.2 per cent higher manganese yield (yield predicted to increase from 82.3 to 88.5 per cent). Extension of this counter-current refining principle, to a multistage Counter-Current Reaction Launder (CCRL) was investigated using the Slag Metal And Gas Klnetics (SMAK) software to model the mass transfer kinetics of the multicomponent coupled reaction system. Simulation results suggested that commercial production of 50 000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of refined LC FeMn, containing less than 0.5 per cent silicon, at manganese yields of up to 90 per cent, should be feasible in a compact CCRL (7 m long by 0.7 m wide).

Because of continuing concerns regarding the effects of cumulative quantities of materials in the environment, the Bureau of Mines has initiated a series of studies to evaluate, to the fullest extent possible, all aspects of the materials flow sequence fur selected commodities. Although tungsten and its compounds do not pose a significant health hazard to the environment, they do represent valuable resource materials to which appropriate conservation considerations must be given. The present study includes a description of recent trends in the consumption, loss, and recycling of tungsten-containing materials in the United States during the period 1974 to 1991 and an estimation of the cumulative loss of tungsten to the environment since 1910. Obsolete tungsten is recycled primarily as cemented tungsten carbide components that have been used in cutting and wear-resistant applications. The quantity recycled, as a of annual U.S. consumption of tungsten, was estimated to have increased from 10% in 1974 to 341a in 1991. An estimated 58% of the 148,000 metric tons of primary tungsten consumed since 1910 was lost to the environment through means such as dissipation, discard, and dilution.

Soil amendments or soil conditioners generally carry the con- notation of being useful for problem soils or soils needing special treatments to produce maximum yields. Many different materials have been utilized, both inorganic and organic. Only the most commonly used and those that appear to have potential to become commonly used will be discussed. Soil productivity depends on many factors. Soil amendments mainly modify physical characteristics and microbial action, and/or change the pH of a soil, rather than directly supplying plant nutrients. They give soil the needed physical properties to allow plant growth, fight erosion, or save water. Some soil amendments provide nutrients in addition to altering the physical, biological, or chemical characteristics of soil. The term "soil amendment," as it is used by Soil Science Society of America, allows soil amendments to be materials other than those used primarily as fertilizers (Anon.,1987). Soil amendments as fertilizers of any type will not be considered here because this aspect is more relevant to the previous chapter entitled "Agricultural Materials: Fertilizers" in this volume. Several inorganic soil amendments have been used since the early 20th century to alter the character of soil: limestone, lime, and similar calcium-rich carbonates and oxides for acid soils, and calcium sulfate (gypsum) and native or uncombined sulfur for alkaline soils. The use of these amendments (limestone, lime, gypsum, and sulfur) or their equivalents has been studied and documented in many basic soils tests (McCaslin and Boyle, 1980). Perlite and vermiculite are considered in separate chapters and only a brief statement of their use as soil conditioners will be made in this chapter. Peat is the principal natural organic soil amendment, but manure, both as a fertilizer and soil conditioner, is used in every part of the world. In less-developed countries, manure is the primary soil fertilizerlconditioner. An organic-rich material designated as "humate" has been marketed as a soil amendment for many years and will be addressed in this paper. Other materials are discussed by the Soil Science Society of America in its Special Publication 7, "Soil Conditioners" (Stewart, 1975). They include bitumen emulsion, polyacrylamide, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, bentonite, nonionic surfactants, and natural mulches. Zeolites can be added to the list of miscellaneous soil amendments (McCaslin and Boyle, 1980), as can calcium chloride (Pressler and Pelham, 1985), sulfuric acid, ferric and ferrous sulfate, aluminum sulfate, ammonium polysulfide, calcium polysulfide, and ammonium bisulfite (Stromberg and Tisdale, 1979). Sludge will not be considered as a soil amendment because it has properties more consistent with fertilizers. All these "other materials" account for a very small amount of the volume and value of soil amendments used and will be only briefly discussed.

High brightness clays are produced from Georgia kaolin by flotation. Fatty acids are used commonly as collectors for anatase, which represents the major colored impurity in the crude. This process requires activation of the minerals with divalent cations such as Ca2+, in which case proper control of the activation step is crucial to the success of the flotation process. In the present work, laboratory tests have been conducted using alkyl hydroxamates as the collector for anatase. A major advantage of using hydroxamate is that this new collector requires no activator. The laboratory tests show also that the hydroxamate collectors produce consistently better products with higher yields from a variety of kaolin clays.

The Ramu chromite deposit occurs in the Marum Ophiolite complex and is the most economically attractive chrom-ite deposit in Papua New Guinea. Its lateritic nickel, chromite and cobalt potential has attracted several compan-ies to prospect the deposit.In the present work, the compositions of chromite in the Ramu lateritic deposit and coexisting olivine-chromite pairs in Marum Ophiolite dunite were analysed with the electron microprobe for Fe, Mg, Cr and Al. The results were used to determine the relationship between the cations in the tetrahedral and octahedral structures of the chromite. In addition, the Fe, Mg, Cr and Al cations of the coexisting olivine-chromite pairs were used to calculate the equilibrated temperatures of crystallisation of the chromite. The variation of Fe", Mg and Cr cation values of the chromite in relation to the calculated temperatures was studied by regression analysis.

The results of an experimental study of polymer-induced flocculation of clay suspensions in continuous, stirred-tank reactors are presented. The effects of polymer dosage, mixing time and mixing intensity are shown to be generally similar to those observed for equivalent batch systems, but flocculation appears to be generally less effective in the continuous process. Settling rates are lower and supernatant turbidities are higher for the continuous system. It is postulated that non-equilibrium effects due to simultaneous polymer adsorption and floc growth can be exploited so as to enhance flocculation in batch systems. The nature of the continuous process, however, offers less opportunity for taking advantage of such effects. Conditions in a continuous flocculation system inherently lead to a closer approach to equilibrium.

"Czochralski pulling has been a very widely used process for growing single crystals for electronic and optical applications. Dopant segregation can significantly degrade the quality and yield of single crystals. We have used the floating-crucible technique for segregation control in Czochralski pulling, our floating crucibles being unique in that the melt passageway is very long. As such, dopant back diffusion is suppressed, even when the cross-section of the melt passageway has to be relatively large to help the melt go through or when the pulling rate is very low. Single crystals of model materials K-doped NaN03 and Pb-doped Sn have been grown with very uniform dopant concentrations. IntroductionSingle crystals of electronic and optical materials are often doped with a small amount of impurities to develop required physical properties, e.g., P and B in Si for n-type and p-type semiconductors, respectively, and Nd in YAG lasers. Dopant segregation can result in nonuniform physical properties, thus degrading the quality and yield of the resultant crystals.Figure 1 is an illustration of the conventional Czochralski process for crystal growth. Several techniques have been developed to control dopant segregation in Czochralski pulling, including the push-pull technique (1,2), the drop-pull technique (3-7) and the floating-crucible technique (8-13). The first two techniques require precise sensing devices and feedback control systems to keep the feeding rate equal to the pulling rate. The last technique is simple since the feeding rate is automatically equal to the pulling rate."

The behaviour of cassiterite-sulphosuccinamate flotation system was examined in the light of zeta potentials measured by micro-electrophoresis method. It was observed that sulphosuccinamate substantially affects the zeta potentials of cassiterite, lowering its i.e.p. to pH 2.5 and indicating a specific adsorption and/or chemical interaction. The optimum concentration for flotation, as seen in micro-flotation tests, was found to be associated with the most effective lowering of the zeta potentials, the optimum pH being 3.0. The effect of cations in the pulp was examined for the presence of ferrous, ferric, aluminium and lead ions. The ions ferric and aluminium were observed to create an intense effect of increasing the potentials to positive side, possibly due to adsorption of cation hydroxy complexes, as indicated by their respective species distribution diagrams.

When explosives are detonated in the borehole where there is an air gap between the explosive charge and the borehole of inner wall, the shock cave in an air gap travelling ahead of the detonation front sill be generated. This shock wave is called the precursor air shock wave (PAS). The explosive is precompressed by the PAS, and as a result of that the detonation failure occur on occasion. This phenomenon is well known as channel effect.

Since industry is progressing into the deep sea, marine scientists have expressed their concern about environmental disturbances which will be introduced by using the deep seafloor for mining metalliferous resources or as a repository for wastes. Environmental studies have been conducted on national levels and in bilateral or multilateral cooperation in the development of manganese nodule mining, as this is generally achieved in marine research. These investigations were partly large-scale and experimental approaches aiming at the assessment of the impacts expected to occur in commercial mining. The results elaborated till today and expected to be acquired in the foreseeable future may remain limited. Reliable impact evaluation will result from monitoring a Pilot Mining Operation (PMO). The lecture will present the broad outlines of a possible program and a preliminary calculation of approximate costs for such a combined industrial test and environmental monitoring event. Although the extent of necessary efforts for the environmental risks evaluation can only be estimated rather vaguely, it will become evident that the required human, technical, logistical, and financial resources to be mobilized will exceed industrial capacities and go beyond national funds. Therefore, such assessment of environmental risks is calling for broad international cooperation. While industrial developments for mining the deep sea will be ruled by competition or probably by restricted joint ventures, environmental care ranges outside competition and falls within the interest of all parties involved. Environmental studies, unlike technologies for the same function, do not primarily need duplication. International cooperation in PMO monitoring would equally well support all mining companies or consortia, it would minimize the efforts for all engaged in this challenging venture of deep-sea mining and it would maximize the precautionary discussion on and the care for the deep-sea environment.

The use of hydraulically placed backfill in the deep gold mines of South Africa has increased rapidly over the past decade. The backfill that is delivered to the placement areas has a relatively high moisture content, and it is therefore pumped into geotextile containment bags that allow excess water to drain out but retain solid particles. The specific problems associated with this process that are addressed in this paper include the loss of solid particles entrained in the excess water, the rate of strength gain of the backfill, and the post-placement shrinkage of the backfill. The results of laboratory, surface stope, and underground tests are described. The parameters that were varied included the slurry density, the particle-size distribution, and the feed rate of the slurry the concentration of added flocculant; and the type of geotextile used as containment. Suggestions are given for the optimization of the placement properties of backfill.

It is well known that manganiferous silver ores containing manganese intimately associated with silver are not amenable to conventional extraction methods. The segregation process has been applied primarily for recovering copper from oxidized and oxide-sulfide ores. A new alternative process combining segregation roasting followed by flotation to recover silver from refractory manganiferous silver ores, was studied using a 23 factorial experimental design. Laboratory investigations have been conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02% copper, 0.09% lead, 0.33% zinc, 12.55% manganese and 187 g/ton silver to study the effects of additives salt, coke and copper oxide on silver recovery. Results indicate that 79.3% silver recovery can be attained in the absence of copper oxide and 88.4% when the copper oxide content is 1.5% at '750°C, 2% salt and 1% coke and 30 minutes of roasting time. It was concluded that doping with copper oxide improves silver recovery.
