The Huolinhe surface mine is a very large-scale surface coal mine, located in the north-east area of China with a production rate of 1.2 Mtpa. Its coal haulage system has a large capacity, long transportation line and high degree of automation. The system comprises two crushing plants, many belt conveyors, four surge bunkers, one loading bunker, one coal storage and five end product bunkers. In this paper, the network patterns of semi-continuous systems in surface mines are studied, the reliability calculation methods and a simulation model are established and the software for computing the reliability of a semi-continuous system is worked out. By considering the whole coal haulage system in the Huolinhe surface mine, the authors developed the system reliability-numerical simulation method. The steps and the computing results of this method are described in detail. Through the calculation, we can master the present situation of system reliability and the main factors impairing system reliability, expose the system weak links, put forward the ways of enhancing system reliability and furnish the basis for improving the system and equipment. The way of increasing capacity and methods of enhancing system reliability are further raised.

The laser sorting technique for replacing the handpicking of the non-ferrous metal scrap from auto shredders was first introduced 1990, The process is based on the use of atomic emission spectroscopy induced by lasers to identify the scrap particles and sort them with adequate systems into main fractions of Al-, Zn-and Cu-alloys, stainless steel and lead, In the meantime the handling technique for the scrap, i.e. the singling and sorting technique as well as the analytical detector were further developed for more efficiency and higher reliability, i,e. less maintenance, minor sorting errors etc. These developments were mainly based, on and initiated by operational experiences from the startup phase of a first production plant. Part of the on going research work was the development of an ,aluminium detector which makes it the first time possible to sort mixed aluminium scrap automatically into specific alloy fractions.

The aim of the research was to investigate the feasibility of using an impedance cell and ratio-transformer bridge to measure solids content in coal slurry pipelines. It appeared that this technique could be developed to measure variations in conductance which correlate with solids content. Successful implementation of the measurement technique would have a variety of applications in existing coal wash plants and the potential for automatic process control. A small pilot plant was designed for a feasibility study. This was a closed loop system in which the coal was uniformly dispersed in a tank with a variable speed agitator and then circulated through an external pipe returning to the top of the tank. The impedance cell was located near the end of the external pipe. Slurry concentrations were varied from clean tap water to 50 per cent solids by weight with the addition of weighed quantities of dry coal dust. Ratio-transformer bridge measurements showed that variations in individual observations were equivalent to measurement errors of about two per cent. These probably reflect variations in concentration of the mixture in the pipe. Data for increments in concentration of one per cent indicate that this is about the limit of resolution of the current system. The paper discusses the principles of operation of the impedance cell and measurement system. Results from the pilot study and proposed improvements in the impedance cell design are examined.

Recovery of metals from complex mixed wastes is a challenging task of modem material and waste management strategies. Thermal methods are an important tool in this respect. Plasma turned out to be particularly useful for treatment of complex or toxic wastes and residuals. The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3 m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.   The tailings impoundment is built with an underdrainage system that collects groundwaters and waters that seep through the impoundment. The embankment and impoundment are both built to withstand the Maximum Credible Earthquake and the Probable Maximum Flood. Tailings are treated to remove cyanide and to decrease metal solubility to reduce long term risk to water quality after mining. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is utilised to treat water from the underdrainage system and water decanted from the top of the tailings pond and stormwaters to remove residual cyanide and metals to extremely high standards with a great deal of reliability and at reasonable cost. Closure of the facility addresses long term post mining water quality issues, and rehabilitation of the area with wildlife habitat as a priority.

National attention in, recycling focuses on municipal solid waste (MSW), even though only about 50'million tons or so of MSW can be recycled, including grass, leaves and other yard wastes. The scope and value of the recycling of industrial "wastes" is much greater. It is possible to account for some 240 million tons of material recycled at the industrial scale annually, which is likely a conservative estimate. Some of this recycling reduces what would otherwise be hazardous waste to 'comrnodities and non-hazardous residue. Global trade in recycled commodities is outlined, as well as the-effect of the Basel Convention on the Trans boundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes A recent Decision under the Convention can, diminish the trade; deny developing countries needed secondary raw materials, and put world markets in chaos. Current U.S. government policies and activities toward ratification of the Convention, and possible new regulation of industrial recycling activities, will be discussed. There are federal proposals that would regulate industrial recycling differently for on-site and off-site facilities and judge legitimate or "sham" recycling according to the concentration of so-called "toxics along for the ride."

Atmospheric Monitoring Systems (AMS) utilizing carbon monoxide sensors have demonstrated their superiority over thermal type fire sensors for early fire detection in underground coal mines. After proving their capability and dependability throughout the 1980's, systems are now evolving and applying new technologies to enhance their effectiveness and reliability. The use of AMS in coal mines which utilize diesel equipment presents unique obstacles. Exhaust gases from diesel equipment not only raise mine ambient CO readings, but also cause numerous nuisance alarms. Both of these conditions reduce the effectiveness of the AMS. New technologies, such as discriminating devices, smoke detectors, and time delays, as well as administrative controls, have been developed and are being utilized to help reduce nuisance alarms produced by the diesel exhaust. This paper will discuss these technologies and administrative controls which are being utilized in coal mines to enhance the effectiveness of the Atmospheric Monitoring Systems. In the remelting of scrap, the ultimate goal is to produce clean aluminum while minimizing metal losses. Recently, it has become more difficult to make significant recovery improvements in Reynolds' Reclamation Plants since metal recoveries were nearing the theoretical maximum. In an effort to gain a better understanding of the factors impacting Reynolds remelting process, a series of experiments using a Taguchi-type design was performed. Specifically, the critical variables and interactions affecting metal recovery of shredded, delacquered Used Beverage Containers (UBC) melted in a side-well reverbatory furnace were examined. This furnace was equipped with plunger-style puddlers and metal circulation. Both delacquecing and melting processes operated continuously with downtime only for necessary mechanical repairs. The experimental design consisted of an orthogonal array with eight trials, each using nominal 500;000 lb shred charge volumes. Final recovery results included molten output and metal easily recovered from dross generated during the test.

The volume of low-level contaminated soil at the. Department of Energy's Nuclear Weapon Sites are in the order of several million tons. Most of the contaminants are uranium, plutonium, other heavy metals and organic compounds. Selected Physical separation processes have shown demonstrated potential in COD Centratingthe radio nuclides in a small fraction of the soil. Depending upon the size, nature of bonding and distributions of radio nuclides, more than 90 percent of the radio nuclide activity can be concentrated in a small volume of fraction of the soil. The physico-chemical separation processes such as flotation in a mechanical and microbubble tall column cell have shown, promising applications in cleaning up the high volume contaminated soil.

The wetting behavior of liquid polymers at solid surfaces and the adhesion forces involved at polymer-filler interfaces should always be considered in the fabrication of high quality polymer composites, including those made with mineral fillers. Spontaneous polymer spreading over the filler surface is a basic condition in the fabrication of the polymer-mineral composites. In this regard, the wetting and adhesion characteristics of polymer-mineral systems are reviewed in this contribution. It appears that several aspects of wetting phenomena at mineral filler surfaces are not well described in the literature and require further systematic study. Specifically, it is clear from this review that efforts should be made to determine the effects of mineral surface contamination (including surface hydration) on wetting and adhesion phenomena, and to determine the wetting characteristics of molten polymers at mineral filler surfaces. It is expected that any improved fundamental understanding of wetting and adhesion phenomena for the polymer-mineral composites will provide the basis for further technological development.

The responsible treatment of natural resources, including mineral raw materials, contributes to the protection of the environment. The management of resources and the environment encompasses reduction of emission through application of environmentally friendly processes, economical use of resources, recycling and substitution, application of energy saving processes, land reclamation and recultivation, as well as a well balanced regional and land use planning. A variety of materials are needed for measures to protect the environment. Many of these materials are, or to a large percentage consist of, mineral raw materials, which become effective either directly or indirectly in their natural state or after an appropriate industrial treatment. We call them environmental minerals. Although extraction and processing of these mineral raw materials destined for use in the protection of the environment, may have a negative impact on the environment on one hand, preventive or curing measures to protect the environment on the other would not be possible without them. We have to accept certain smaller burdens of the environment, which naturally will have to be kept at the lowest possible level, in order to avoid or minimize greater damages to nature. In the broad group of industrial minerals and rocks there is a wide variety of mineral raw materials, which lend themselves for countermeasures in favor of the environment. To hamper their production and processing through excessive environmental regulations would make the protection of the very environment more difficult or even impossible.

Evans' theory for chisel shaped picks is well known in the field of rock cutting technology. It has been widely accepted as a good mathematical description of how coal and other rocks break under the action of a simple wedge or chisel. Subsequently, Evans proposed a corresponding theory for pointed shaped picks. Theory along with experimental evidence from the laboratory has consistently shown that chisel picks are more efficient than pointed picks. However despite such evidence, pointed picks continue to be the preferred shape in most practical cutting applications. Evans' theory for pointed picks was developed in an attempt to shed light on this apparent incongruity. The theory although predicting forces of the right order was found to be deficient in several respects. This paper examines Evans' theory for pointed picks and proposes changes to it, which brings the theory much more into line with measured data. The issue of the relative efficiencies of chisel and pointed shaped picks is also examined on a theoretical basis and the apparent incongruity is Resolved.

A new approach is described for the calculation of the kinetics of metal/slag, metal/slag/gas, and metal/matte/slag/gas reactions. The algorithm assumes that equilibrium is achieved at the interface between phases, and uses an equilibrium solver (such as SOLGASMIX) to compute the equilibrium state at the interface at each time step during the reaction. For multiple phase systems a number of unit operations, representing the different phases and interfaces, must be connected together in a reasonalbly complex manner, and the METSIM software package has been utilized for this purpose. The new approach is superior to the SMAK software developed by the author and his co-workers over the past decade, for the reasons discussed in this paper.

The work described here attempts to underscore the importance of the time lag between the end of a loading phase and the instant a winding drum begins its acceleration phase. Traces generated from a computer-simulation model show that the amplitude of the stress oscillations occurring in mine hoisting cable during the constant velocity-of-ascent phase is a direct result of the temporal sequence employed between the loading and the raising phases. While current and early literature indicates that extensive work has been undertaken on the isolated effects of these two independent sequences, the literature does not appear to contain any documented evidence to suggest an optimal control or interfacing between these two dynamic regimes.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is an analysis of underground coal mine fire incidents occurring in the United States during the 15years from 1978 through 1992. The fire data used in this analysis were obtained from U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration mine fire investigation reports. Fires were analyzed by year, State, coalbed thickness, mine size, mining method, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment involved, detection method, time of day, time of year, number of injuries and fatalities, method of extinguishment, and evacuation measures taken. In all, 164 fires are included in this report, or an average of 10.8 fires per year. The most fires occurred in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, respectively. However, the fire incidence rates for these States, expressed as the number of fires per million tons of coal mined, were the lowest, second lowest, and fourth lowest of all underground coal producing States. The most common ignition source was electricity; the most common burning substance was coal; the most frequent fire location was the belt entry; the most common equipment involved in fires was the conveyor belt; and the most common extinguishing agent was water.

The effects of certain variables on the extraction of gold by thioureation have been investigated on a quartzose gold-bearing ore using a statistical multifactorial strategy. The factors taken into consideration were milling time (which corresponds to a given grain size), oxidant concentration, thiourea concentration and liquid/solid ratio. The influence of these four variables was ascertained first by a full factorial design at two levels for each variable (16 runs). This permitted the estimation of first-order effects of the factors affecting the process. Then 9 runs were added whose levels were both in the centre of and outside the axes of the previous plan thus originating a central composite design. This permitted estimation both of second-order effects of the factors involved and of parameters of a second-order polynomial model. The results show that extraction of gold depends only on milling time and oxidant concentration, at least in the experimental range considered. The equation fitting experimental data, as calculated by the least squares method, allows a response surface to be drawn. Due to the low gold grade of the ore (6 ppm) statistical analysis could lead to contradictory results, hence strict observance of Gy's rules for sampling and very accurate and precise chemical analyses were required.
