Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. DP - diameter of boom point sheaves. d - rope diameter x - mean value of the measured parameter. s - standard deviation of x B/d - average bending ratio of ropes B/d =(D+ DP)/2d n - operational safety factor of the rope (rope stength) x (number of ropes) n(bucket load + bucket weight)] In terms of D/d ratio, the working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are similar to that in other related industrial applications. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces. Presently, orebody modelling consists basically of fitting a mathematical model to represent spatially a certain geological variable, generally grade. An orebody model is constructed from a set of sample data obtained from various locations in the orebody, thus it is only one form of representation of the true phenomena. Checking the compatibility of the data with the modelling procedure is the most important factor when assessing confidence in the orebody model. The level of confidence in the model will depend on the adequacy of the data set and the validity of the basic assumption required by the modelling method. Fractal geometry is one way of modelling the spatial distribution of a geological variable in an orebody geometry. Fractals can be used to interpolate the Z(x) geological variable at unsampled sites. The concepts of self similarity and self affinity that form the basic assumption of fractal geometry theory which areinvestigated. The population distribution of the geological variable in question must be examined to determine the appropriateness of both fractal geometry and geostatistical modelling methods. The selection of the most appropriate method depends on the available data. A researcher or a practitioner needs to understand the strengths and limitations of the various modelling methods before choosing the most appropriate method. This study investigates the fractal properties of grade distribution using the variogram and some proposed variations as techniques to measure the fractalness. The aim is to assess applicability of fractal geometry theory to modelling ore grade distribution in a deposit. A comparison of the results demonstrates the methods which better capture the spatial behaviour of the variable under study.

With the ongoing pressure on the secondary aluminum business to limit the amount of waste generated from processing aluminum dross, it becomes very advantageous to preprocess the dross to reduce waste. The advantage of preprocessing is that it significantly reduces the oxides and salt cake generated when melted. Various products can be produced from the oxides for the steel industry. The following paper will demonstrate that removal of oxide fines before melting will result in large volumes of material not being landfilled. We will show that the end result of this technology is to significantly reduce the amount of salt cake sent to a landfill while maximizing the recyclability of the aluminum dross.

Recycling of aluminium contained in used aseptic beverage cartons is a difficult task which has nevertheless to be tackled by our modern societies. Techniques have earlier been developed by the paper and pulp industry for the recycling of the board fibres from collected post-consumer beverage cartons. A joint technical feasibility study by Granges and a leading beverage carton producer has dealt with different techniques for handling residues from repulping facilities. The aluminium obtained can be used as raw material for the production of thin gauge foil, thus closing the recycling loop.

Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mine operators to dust their mine corridors with an inert material to prevent coal dust explosions. The most commonly used material is pulverized limestone. Current practice to determine compliance with MSHA regulations requires the coal mine foreman or an MSHA inspector to collect samples of the deposited dust, a mixture of coal dust and limestone rock dust, for above ground laboratory analysis. To expedite this process, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed two instruments to facilitate the inspection and rock dusting processes, the explosibility meter and float dust deposition meter. The explosibility meter is a hand-held instrument which provides an in situ measurement of the explosible nature of homogeneous mine dust samples. The float dust deposition meter measures the mass loading density of the top layer of coal or limestone dust deposited on the mine floor during mining operations by the ventilation air. It may also be used to automate trickle rock dusting equipment. The operation of each device is based on the difference in the optical reflectance between the light limestone dust and the dark coal dust. The principal of the explosibility meter is based on the observation that, for a fixed coal volatility, the optical reflectance of dust mixtures is relatively constant at the limit of flammability, and independent of the coal dust particle size.

Cost effectiveness in gold and silver leaching has centered mainly on reducing or preventing excessive use of lixiviants. In cyanide leaching practice, the active reactants, cyanide and oxygen, present different problems. The activity of cyanide may be adjusted at cost, but oxygen from air, has a fixed, low activity with an equilibrium concentration of ~7 ppm. Consequently, the use of air in agitation and heap leaching presents distinct kinetic problems. The refractory ores are either high consumers of oxygen or tend to immobilize dissolved precious metal-cyanide complexes. Commercial treatment of refractory ores involves oxidation by pressure leaching, roasting or biooxidation prior to cyanide leaching. Chemical reactions important in preoxidation of refractory sulfide ores by pressure leaching and biooxidation are considered. Major emphasis is given to the role of oxygen in heap leaching of oxidized ores.

The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national Priorities.

The dispersion model of nonideal flow was applied to describe the hydrodynamic state within the flotation column. Residence time distribution (RTD) data of a laboratory flotation column were measured to determine the parameters of the model. The effects of operating variables and column geometry on the Peclet number which reflects the extent of axial dispersion were investigated and a semi-empirical expression of Pe was formulated. The dispersion model was validated for the column flotation of ultrafines coal. Under the conditions of sufficient aeration rate and frother addition, a good agreement between the measured recoveries and predicted data was obtained. The dispersion model with first-order flotation rate process of the flotation column developed in this study is useful in predicting the collection zone recovery of fine coal, and for the flotation column scale-up.

Many existing computer planning programs for the mining industry focus either on big mining enterprises with a high production rate or on smaller operations for high value minerals. Big mining enterprises, like the hardcoal company `Ruhrkohle AG' in Germany have their own R&D departments which develop powerful computer programs for planning purposes, partly in co-operation with mining universities. However, there is a remarkable number of small- scale mining operations which are either not able to buy expensive hard- and software or don't have the skills for the operation of extensive software programs. Partly there is also a trend in using rule of thumb calculations rather than computer programs which need a lot of - partly unavailable - data. For this reason a computer program was developed which does not need expensive hardware and software and which can help the planning engineer in the selection of a limited number of possibilities. Until this time the planning engineer established two or three different cases and calculated the results with a pocket calculator. This could last some hours or even some days. Now he or she can use the computer program with a normal PC to compare the cases. All activities are menu-driven. The basis for all, calculations are fixed and variable costs as well as average performance for special activities. The paper gives an example for a possible planning situation in fluorspar mining (originally this program was developed for the fluorspar enterprise Lengenfeld in Germany). It shows the initial situation, the main structure of the program, the input logic and the results. Benefits, limits and possible extensions of the program are discussed.

This paper provides a brief overview of the history of the Chaffers Dewatering Project which was successfully commissioned in August 1993. Until the end of 1992 the `Superpit' and the deep mines of the Golden Mile had all been dewatered by a staged pumping system from the 28 level in the Lake View Shaft, which was removed at that time when the Lake View Mine was absorbed into the Superpit. Feasibility analysis had indicated that adaptation of oil industry technology offered the greatest potential for a low cost solution to the problem of dewatering the open pit and deep mines. A KCGM engineer and one of the authors visited the Jackson oilfields to look at the deep well pumping technology in use there in early-1991. In the final analysis a new dewatering station was established in the 23 level crushing station of the Chaffers Shaft using conventional plunger pumps, but the rising main was screwed 178 mm OD (7 inch) casing the suspended from the surface to a depth of 686 metres, and was installed using oilfield personnel and methods. Only the second installation of its kind in Australia, the project achieved the dewatering objective at about half of the capital cost of the more conventional approach and at lower operating costs as well.

It is estimated that the volume of low -level and intermediate level contaminants present in the soil at different DOE sites is of the order of several million cubic feet. The existing remediation scheme is containerization followed by burial in Land Disposal Facilities (LDF's) which is economically unattractive warranting the need to develop alternate remediation routes. One such route is the physical separation based volume reduction approach to removing a MINIMUM AMOUNT OF CLEAN SOIL with the radioactive particles, reducing the amount of material that requires disposal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and test the feasibility of using physical beneficiation techniques for removal of contaminants from soil. The performance criterion was to recover at least 80% of the activity in 20% or less of the original contaminated soil volume. Four different radioactively contaminated (primarily uranium and plutonium) soils from DoE sites namely LANL, INEL, Fernald Plant 1 Storage Pad (ID-B) and Mound soils were tested using gravity, magnetic, gravo-magnetic, hydrocyclonic and flotation devices. The paper is divided into the two sections. The first section presents the overview of the Heavy Metals in Contaminated Soil Treatability Project conducted at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) describing the salient features of a state-of-the art Soil Washing Laboratory and the technology equipments used in the test program. The second section describes the soil characterization and typical volume reduction results obtained from the UNR tests. Among the physical separation processes, only flotation processes passed the performance criterion. For the LANL and INEL soils where the contamination was contained in coarse particle size, it was possible to recover more than 80% of the activity in less than 10-20% of the original volume of the soil thus rendering 80-90% of the soil "clean". For Fernald and Mound soils where contamination was of colloidal nature, flotation based processes showed encouraging results and are recommended for further studies.

Sediment consolidation in highly flocculated suspensions occurs only if the self-weight of the material exceeds its compressive yield stress. A simple model for sediment densification is presented and applied to the simulation of thickener operations. Measured relationships between sediment self-weight and the extent of consolidation are used to establish underflow densities. Supernatant turbidity data provide the information necessary to predict overflow clarity. It is shown that thickener depth can play a role in determining solids-handling capacity as well as dewatering performance. The application of the model to the design and operation of full-scale thickeners is described.

Introduction The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionized the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980s provided a magnetic product that was an order of magnitude stronger than that conventional ferrite magnets. This allowed for the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits that operated energy free and that surpassed electromagnets in the strength and effectiveness. New applications and design concepts that focused on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications that were not previously considered are now being used in primary mineral upgrading, recycling and secondary recovery. Historical perspective Lodestone was the first naturally occurring permanent magnetic material known. Lodstone was most likely used to upgrade iron ore by early civilizations. By the 1600s, the early magnet technology had advanced to quench-hardened iron-carbon alloys. The practical significance of magnetic separation was formally recognized in 1792 when an English patent was issued for separating iron ore by magnetic attraction. By today's standards, carbon steel is a very poor magnet material. It is easily demagnetized and has a very low energy product of much less than I MGOe (Million-Gauss-Oerstads). This was state-of-the-art technology for almost 300 years until chromium was added to magnet feedstock, which resulted in a three-fold increase in the energy product. The well documented addition of cobalt to permanent magnets in 1917 initiated the 30-year era of "Alnico" magnets that at the time provided a superior magnetic energy product. Since then, the science of magnetism has advanced rapidly and is now considered a highly developed branch of physics and material science. Permanent magnets have had an extremely long history. Figure 1 presents a chronology of permanent magnets that illustrates the increase in energy product. Amazing developments in material science have taken place in the last two decades. The gradual advancement of permanent magnet technology was shattered in 1967 with the initial development of samarium-cobalt (rare earth) magnets. Since that time, the advent of neodymium-boron-iron magnets provided such an increase in energy product that new design concepts were considered. New avenues of study were introduced by the complexities in the material science and physics involved in describing these new permanent magnets. Furthermore, applications for permanent magnets that were previously not considered were now viable. Rare earth elements Rare earth elements have claimed the attention of scientists for the past century. These elements were originally termed "rare" because they were thought to be quite scarce. Since then, however, geological studies have shown them to be relatively abundant. The discovery and identification of rare earth elements is complicated by the inherent difficulties in separating them from each other. The rare earth elements comprise the fifteen transition elements of Group IIIB, Period 6, of the periodic table. These elements extend from lanthanum to lutetium and are commonly called the lanthanide series. Samarium and neodymium are the two most common elements used in the commercial manufacture of rare earth permanent magnets. Commercial grade rare earth magnets There are only a few common types of rare earth magnets that are considered in the circuit design for magnetic separators. Early rare earth magnets of commercial significance (introduced in 1970) consisted of the first generation of sintered SmCo5. The energy product of these magnets ranged up to 23 MGOe, which provided the initial impetus to the field of high-energy permanent magnets. Although these magnets did not produce the extremely high magnetic field strengths of current rare earth magnets, they were relatively temperature stable. Containing 66% Co, they are the most expensive of the basic commercial rare earth permanent magnets. Their use is limited today because they are being replaced by second and third generation rare earth permanent magnets.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control inNew South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

Replies to a comprehensive questionnaire on mine water resource management systems (WRMS), which were distributed to a selection of Australian mining operations in 1991, are analysed. Although the replies cannot be considered fully representative of the industry, they do provide a good qualitative indication of water resource management in the industry at that time.Within Australia's largely arid land mass, a majority of mines nonnally need to conserve water, a few need to dispose of water and a number face a seasonally varying position. An assessment of the importance of WRMS compared with management of ore extraction and processing is given. A risk assessment of failure is given; there is more acceptance of WRMS failure in the mine compared with the mill. An assessment is made of considerations in WRMS design. Managements are generally pro-active in the design of WRMS and in the setting of perfonnance standards. The operational characteristics of mine systems are examined in detail.Companies generally do not appear to allocate sufficient resources for the collection of basic WRMS monitoring data and knowledge of the water budget to efficiently manage the system. This indicates scope for considerable cost savings in most mines.

By oxidizing the pyrite matrix through biological leaching of precious metals ores or concentrates, better than 90% recovery of gold and silver is achieved. The paper develops three precipitation processes that eliminates arsenic and all other toxic elements in the resulting liquor after the biological reactors. In addition, the precipitates are highly crystalline and resist resolubilization. The latter must be tested for at least six months by EPA test procedures. The three systems are temperature (must be at least 120°C or higher) lime or limestone. A continuous pilot plant was employed for all three systems and complete recommendations are given to optimize Fe/As molar ratio, reaction kinetics (detention time) pH, temperature, wt % feed solids as well as resultant reagent consumption based upon continuous operation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has tested cyanide leaching for recovery of palladium (Pd) from spent petroleum processing catalysts. Three different catalyst samples were supplied by a spent-catalyst processor. These catalysts consisted of a zeolite base and contained 0.4 to 0.7 pct Pd. During alkaline cyanide leaching, the catalysts exhibited ion-exchange properties due to their zeolite matrices. Hydrogen ions were released from the zeolite in exchange for sodium ions in solution, resulting in a significant decrease in solution pH. This could present a safety hazard because of the potential for release of toxic hydrogen cyanide gas. A pretreatment .step where the catalysts were contacted with a 1.0M sodium hydroxide solution was found to prevent the pH shift from occurring. Following the sodium hydroxide pretreatment, two stages of leaching at 160 °C with solution containing 1 pct sodium cyanide and 0.1M sodium hydroxide gave at least 75 and up to 95 pct Pd recovery. The Pd was quantitatively recovered from the leach solution by thermal decomposition in an autoclave at 250 °C for 1 h. The Pd content of the precipitate was over 50 pct. Thermal decomposition also decreased the total cyanide content of the barren solution to less than 0.2 mg/L. The catalyst leach residues passed the Federal Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure and the California Waste Extraction Test, indicating that landfill disposal of the leach residues would be acceptable.

Cake filtration is a complex process and the cake constructure is very difficult to describe in theory. Cake constructure parameters, such as the cake prosity, pore size shape and even its distribution, are main factors influencing the filtration results but have not been thoroughly understood yet. In this paper the fractal theory, an effective mathematical method in describing the self-similar phenomenon is used to investigate the filter cake constructure, and the scanning electron microscope and automatic image analyzer are used to measure the cake constructure. Cakes which formed in different condition are examined and the fractal dimension of the cake are calculated. The study shows that the constructure of the filter cake can be approximated by Sierpinski fractal geometry and that the fractal dimension of filter cake, related to the particle characteristics, slurry concentration and filtration pressure is a good parameter to describe the pore size distribution and the cake penetrability.

"In the mining industry, most of stripping and rock fragmentation is performed by blasting. The academician N.V. Melnikov has projected that blasting methods would be used to crush 20% of soft rocks and 80435% of medium and hard rocks. Thus, the volume of blasting will continue to increase.This is especially true for electrical blasting, since this method has a number of well known advantages, and in some cases (e.g. for underground blasting in coal mines) it is the only acceptable method."

Surface analysis by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) of samples taken from the galena flotation section of the Hilton Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited are presented. Flotation rate and pulp chemical data taken during the sampling period are also presented and discussed. Surface analysis suggested that, under normal operating conditions, an overlayer of precipitated calcium sulfate existed at the surface of the sulfide minerals. In particular, there was a decrease in the surface concentration of calcium sulfate for the concentrate samples relative to that occurring on the tailing samples. This suggests that the flotation process was selective against minerals which have calcium sulfate predominating at the surface. Heterocoagulation of hydrophilic calcium sulfate on to the galena surface considerably reduced galena flotation rate. Methods to control calcium sulfate precipitation, which include sodium carbonate treatment of the pulp, are also discussed. Sur- face analysis results of samples taken from the Hilton Concentrator during sodium carbonate addition to the grinding circuit are also presented. This shows clear evidence for the removal of calcium sulfate from the mineral surfaces without concomitant surface precipitation of calcium carbonate. Reasons for the apparent dispersion of precipitated calcium carbonate are discussed. Galena flotation rate was increased by the addition of sodium carbonate apparently due to the removal of interfering calcium sulfate.
