This paper will describe the experience gained and explain the deductions made from the phenomenon of the great squeeze which occurred at Brule Mines. The first indication of the commencement of the squeeze was the breaking of posts on the high-side rib of the slope. At first we thought this was due to a lateral pressure only, and we renewed the broken posts with new ones, the result being that the new posts also were soon broken. A noticeable bending and breaking of the collars occurred, with a corresponding reduction in the height of the haulage slope. These symptoms were also evident on the counter above the slope, indicating that the trouble was of an exceptional nature. In the meantime, we had concentrated a large force of repair men, renewing broken timbers and brushing the roof and floor, but in spite of all our efforts we could not overtake the damage being done. Our next problem was to find the cause of this trouble. We were in a new basin of coal (No. 2) which had only been opened a few months, as we had worked the previous four years in another basin (No. 3) where no such trouble as this had ever been encountered. Naturally our first thought concerned the adequacy of the size of the pillars. We had worked in the No. 3 south basin for the previous four years. without any such experience, with 60-feet pillars between slope and counters; whereas we had established 100-foot pillars in the No. 2 south basin between the slopes and counters with an 80-foot pillar between counter and first line of cross-cuts, and 100-foot pillars between the breasts.

In another place,* the writer has called attention to the modern methods of the laboratory investigation of clay, and it is desired here simply to discuss one branch of the subject, which, though of considerable importance, has heretofore received little attention in this country, viz., the rational analysis of clay. In order, however, the better to point out the bearings and advantages of this procedure, it is necessary to refer briefly to the ultimate analysis as well. The remarks in this paper refer only to the use of clay for the manufacture of clay-products. Pure clay or kaolin-f is extremely refractory, possesses little plasticity, and usually shrinks aud warps considerably in burning. Even the smallest proportion of impurities changes these properties, so that the kaolin exhibits variations in shrinkage, plasticity, tensile strength, fusibility, and often color when burned. The majority of nearly pure kaolins consist of kaolinite (A1,O2 2SiO,, 2H20), undecomposed feldspar, and quartz. The kaolinite generally forms the finest particles of the clay and is known as the clay-substance, while the rest of the clay-particles are collectively spoken of as sand. In the ordinary or ultimate analysis, the substances generally determined are silica, alumina, ferric oxide, lime, magnesia, alkalies and water. An analysis of this type simply regards the clay as a mixture of elements or oxides, but gives no clue as to the actual condition in which these substances exist, i.e., whether as silicates, oxides or carbonates, etc., a point which it is of the highest importance to know; for the individual components of the clay influence its properties not only according

Virtually zero gas emission smelting is promoted as a means for securing environmental advantages and the general public’s acceptance. Concerns about climate change will increasingly make it more difficult for new primary metals projects to come to fruition unless greenhouse gas emissions are decreased. Assuming a sustainable market for sulphuric acid is not locally available, the next best option is high temperature reaction of strong SO2 with limestone or dolomite. This is followed by CO2 liquefaction and disposal either underground or in the deep ocean. The Voisey’s Bay nickel project is cited as an example where appropriate location of a new smelter close to large dolomite or limestone deposits would lead to a virtually zero gas emission operation. Most of the electrical energy required for producing technically pure oxygen and for liquefying CO2 and transporting it to disposal can be derived from smelting a bulk sulphide concentrate and then reacting SO2 at high temperature. Provided the smelter gases are properly cleaned before sulphur fixation, the sulphated stone should be uncontaminated and environmentally benign and possibly of use in the building and construction industry.

Dispersion-strengthened aluminum products consist of an aluminum matrix containing finely distributed ceramic or intermetallic particles. Examples of the two types of product are SAP, in which the dispersed phase is aluminum oxide, and materials made from atomized aluminum alloy powder, in which the dispersed phase can be FeA1, particles.' A fundamental difference between the two types of product is that the elongation of aluminum/aluminum oxide products decreases with increasing temperature, whereas the elongation of aluminum- FeA13 products, like that of aluminum alloys, increases with increasing temperature. As regards the structural stability, aluminum/aluminum oxide products are stable to temperatures above 600° C as aluminum oxide does not react with aluminum, whereas prolonged heating at above 400°C of aluminum-FeA1, products leads to coarsening of the intermetallic phase and loss of strength.' On the basis of these results it is supposed that a dispersion-strengthened product combining strength, ductility, and stability at elevated temperatures may be obtained if the dispersed phase reacts with the matrix in such a way that the reaction does not proceed at any significant rate at the application temperature. Different ceramic or intermetallic compounds may be selected as the dispersed phase, and, as alloying of the matrix phase may also influence the reaction, many possibilities exist for each metal. In the present study, aluminum products containing different oxides have been examined. For a reaction to take place between the dispersed oxide and the aluminum the free energy of formation of the oxide (MeO) must be greater than that of aluminum oxide; the difference should, however, not be too great in order to limit the reaction rate. Highwall mining is an important coal mining method. It appears that upwards of 60 highwall miners are presently in operation, and they may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. A review of the Mines Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data over the 20 year period from 1983 to 2002 identified 9 fatalities attributable to auger and highwall mining of which inadequate ground control accounted for 1/3. In the past 5 years, 1 fatality occurred in highwall mining. Estimates of the manpower requirements in highwall mining suggest that its fatality rate is essentially the same as for surface coal mining, thus highwall mining appears to be a very safe modern mining method. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern, and operators are required to develop and follow an appropriate highwall mining ground control plan. The plans usually specify the following geotechnical parameters: hole width, maximum hole depth, maximum overburden depth, seam thickness, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. Calculated web pillar stability factor exceeded 1.3 for most designs evaluated. This study examined records from 5,289 highwall miner holes with a total completed footage of about 2,560,000 feet to understand the reasons for early pull out. Average lost footage is typically about 20% of planned footage. Only 35% of the holes reached planned depth, and 20% were short due to rockfalls. Water and adverse geology accounted for 15% of the losses. Mechanical/electrical problems, guidance, and slope stability problems accounted for the remaining 30%. Web pillar stability factor for these holes also exceeded 1.3 in 95% of cases. Best practices to avoid trapped miners include: avoid mining in stream valleys, avoid mining near outside corners, careful alignment of each hole and the use of an onboard guidance system. Several issues in highwall mining ground control require further investigation including highwall mining through old auger workings, highwall mining near old underground mines, multiple-seam and multiple lift highwall mining and finally the size and frequency of barrier pillars.

The complex system has been developed for long-term assessment of world prices and sale volume of primary aluminium when using the analytical model of the market and market supply forecasts as well as economy development in the Western countries characterized by the industrial production indices as correct data of Western World aluminium consumption are absent, The important part of this system is the model developed for forecasting the degree of capacities utilization of smelters and refineries depending on the price level, The model contains a statistic part corresponding to the capacities distribution by the production cost, and a dynamic part determining the deviation from the static depending on the price variation dynamics, The developed complex system has been identified by the actual data of the world prices of smelter grade alumina and primary aluminium, conservation and reactivation of refineries and smelters in the Western countries within the period from 1992 to 2003. The system was used for primary aluminium and alumina price forecasts till 2020.

Iron transfer from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to the electrolyte can have a major economic impact on solvent extraction (SX) operations. High iron transfer will lead to greater operational costs, due to increased reagent consumption through electrolyte bleed and make up, or increased power costs due to decreased electrowinning current efficiency. Bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfide ore from the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine was investigated in a large scale piloting program including SX and electrowinning. Plant data and lab test work conducted throughout the course of operation, show that the unique containing PLS high ferric iron with high pH can lead to lower Cu: Fe selectivity than is typically seen in traditional copper SX operations. The impact of high ferric iron on the plant operation, and methods to reduce iron transfer will be discussed. Special considerations need to be taken for plant operating conditions and selection of SX reagents (including both extractant and aromatic content of diluent) based on the feed PLS characteristics.

The area discussed in this report comprises a group of 38 counties lying in the northeast corner of Texas. It covers all, and extends beyond, the borders of what is commonly described as the East Texas Basin. It includes two major oil fields, Van and East Texas; two major gas fields, Bethany and Waskom; and a number of fields, both oil and gas, of lesser importance. All commercial oil production comes from beds of Upper Cretaceous age and almost exclusively from the basal member, the Woodbine sand. Gas is produced from both Upper and Lower Cretaceous beds with the newer production from the older beds. East Texas Field This field continued as in 1932 and 1933 to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the oil business. The fundamental problem in the thermodynamics of solid solutions is the determinatiorl or calculation of the activities of the components as a function of temperature and composition. Since the theory of metals is not suficiently developed to allow a priori calculation of these quantities, they must be obtained from experiment. C. Wagner1 has reviewed the literature of this subject for the period before 1940. Although several important and extensive studies have been made in the meantime, the number of systems to which any sort of quantitative information can be assigned is vanish-ingly small. These data have become of great potential importance in studies of the structure of solid solutions2 and intermetallic compounds, the nature of the diffusion process,3,4 and perhaps even the mechanism of mechanical deformation.5 For these reasons, it. seems very worthwhile to extend the experimental data in this field. Although there is little use in duplicating Wagner's review, attention should be directed to the most recently reported investigations. A brief enumeration of the methods of measurement previously employed also should be valuable. The most direct method is the determination of the partial pressure of the components in the vapor phase in equilibrium with the solution. Both equilibrium and kinetic methods have been tried in metal systems, but almost exclusively on liquid phases. Only in the ease of carbon in iron alloys and in the copper-zinc system have extensive measure- ments been made which include solid phases. When one of the components is an element, such as nitrogen or carbon, which forms compounds which are very volatile and stable at normal temperatures and pressures (CH4, Co2, CO NH3), it is frequently possible to equilibrate mixtures containing these (such as CH4-H2, CO2-CO, NH3-H2) independently with the elernents (C, X) and with the metal (Fe, Ni, etc.). Such measurernents have been made for carbon in iron, iron-silicon, and iron-manganese alloys by Smith6 and in iron and iron-nickel alloys by Toensing.7 Differences between carbon activity values at the same temperature and carbon content when carboil is introduced from CH4-H2 rnixtures or CO-CO. mixtures indicate that the effects of hydrogen and oxygen in the system are not negligible, and one can only hope that the true value lies somewhere between these sets of results, probably nearer the CH4-H2 data since hydrogen is less soluble in iron than oxygen. This is essentially an equilibrium method, although flowing gas is employed. A kirletic method has been employed which consists of sweeping an inert gas (generally hydrogen) over the alloy at a series of rates, condensing the metal vapor out,, and analyzing it. The metal content can be extrapolated to zero flow rate (equilibrium). Wejnarth's8 work on Cd-Mg and Zn-Mg is a good example of this frequently used method. A variant of this consists of equilibrating a known volume of inert gas with the alloy, sweeping it out quickly, and analyzing for metal. In common with the above method, it has the disadvantage that the "inert" gas is generally somewhat soluble in the alloy. Moreover, the former continuously displaces the system from equilihrium and may give low values if solid diffusion is involved. The dew point method applied by Hargreaves9 to the alpha and beta brasses and by Schneider and Stolll0 to A1-Zn avoids the introduction of another component to the system, but is useful only in systems in which one component is much more volatile than the other. The alloy sealed in one end of an evacuated silica tube is heated to the desired temperature. The temperature of the other end is lowered until droplets of the volatile component condense. When the temperature is raised slightly, the droplets will evaporate. By careful adjustment of temperature, the range between evaporation and condensation can be narrowed appreciably. An independent determination of the vapor pressure of the . pure volatile component is necessary to give the partial pressure over the alloy. This is the method employed here to determine the vapor pressures of zinc and cadmium over their silver alloys up to 34 pct in cadmium and 76 pct in zinc. EFFECTIVE use of rotary kiln waste gases to preheat dry pulverized materials has been demonstrated in full-scale operation at the Allentown Portland Cement Co. plant, Evansville, Pa. Pulverized raw materials are preheated in suspension in the gas stream in a multi-stage counterflow process which draws the gases through a series of cyclone collectors. Upon entering the first cyclone stage the material, continuously delivered and suspended in the gas stream, is successively collected and resuspended until it discharges through the kiln feed pipe. Gas and material contact time is thus prolonged, providing a high degree of heat recuperation with a very low temperature differential between gas and material at the final stage. The suspension preheater, developed by Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AG of Cologne, Germany, was first installed at the Norddeutsche Huette plant, Oslebshausen, Germany. Similar preheaters are now in operation at three other German cement plants. The first American installation, at the Allentown Portland Cement Co. plant, was designed and manufactured by Fuller Co. of Catasauqua, Pa., Humboldt's licensee for the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This paper presents a framework for analyzing the theory and industrial practice of coal flotation and gives some examples of its use for understanding flotation phenomena and optimizing/controlling flotation circuit performance. It is based on extensive laboratory and in plant test work conducted over the past several years by researchers at MTU as well as an analysis of the literature. Previous researchers have usually considered either the surface chemistry or the kinetics of coal flotation behavior, only rarely have these factors been considered together. However, these factors must be considered together in order to gain a clear understanding of the theory underlying coal flotation such that its practical application can be optimized. Fortunately, this complex objective can be achieved by considering the recovery and rate of recovery of the different types of particles present in the feed to coal flotation circuits and the fundamental mechanisms responsible for these recovery phenomena. The influence of three major groups of variables must be considered: control variables (reagent additions, aeration rate, etc.); disturbance variables (feed pH, percent solids, etc.); and circuit design variables (number of cells, circuit arrangement, etc.). Each of these groups of variables affects process kinetics in a clearly understandable manner, which, once determined, is extremely useful in circuit design and optimization. This paper includes a discussion of the use of the proposed framework to explain the effects of some coal characteristics on flotation performance. In addition, an example of using this analysis to optimize the performance of a coal flotation circuit using frother and collector addition levels is included.

Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. The members of the society are doubtless aware that the production of American Bessemer steel works is constantly increasing; that the same converters and machinery are doing more work every year. This enlarged output is due to various causes, chiefly the following: 1st. Better organization—better knowledge on the part of both managers and men, of the plant and the process; of the way to economize the more exhausting labor, and of the arrangement of the details of labor and operations so that they shall not conflict; also, more pluck—a greater willingness to take risks, or, more properly, such an intimate knowledge of the nature and capacities of the refractory linings in various stages of disrepair, and the probable be- . havior of the fluid metal at various stages of its treatment, that the precise nature of the risk may be better known, so that the works may be crowded to their full capacity. In the early practice, after getting four or five consecutive heats in a day, the men preferred to " let well enough alone," and to devote the remaining time to preparation for another turn. Uranium exploration in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming has been intensive since 1966 and in 1968 produced significant discoveries of reduced uranium ore by Humble Oil & Refining Company and others. Substantial reserves have been established in the area. High-grade carnotite ore was discovered in 1951 near Pumpkin Buttes in the central part of the basin (Fig. 1). Other mineralized areas were soon established from Pumpkin Buttes south to Monument Hill and Box Creek. Total production from these shallow oxidized deposits in the lower Eocene Wasatch formation was small. The AEC reports total production of 520,000 tons of ore averaging 0.19% U3O8. The authors are indebted to many people within Humble Oil & Refining Company and Esso Production Research Company for their assistance and guidance. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS The Highland ore deposit, discovered in 1968, is a large uranium occurrence located in the southern part of the Powder River Basin. Uranium mineralization consists of sooty, black uraninite and coffinite coating sand grains and is concentrated along the margins of Tertiary fluvial sandstones. Uranium was transported by oxidizing solutions roving through the buried sandstones and spreading into less permeable channel-edge sandstones to form typical rolls and tabular deposits. Unaltered sandstones are light gray to gray-buff where the sandstones have been oxidized, the colors are various shades of red, yellow, and yellowish brown. An Oligocene tuffaceous source for the uranium is proposed; however, leaching of the arkosic and tuffaceous host sediments may also have provided a source.

THE plastic deformation of slender single crystals of zinc has been described in some detail in the paper by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid,1 which has become a classic, and also by one of the present authors in a somewhat shorter account.2 The study of single-crystal zinc is termed classical because zinc single crystals offer, perhaps, the best material yet available for the study of atomic behavior during deformation and the effect known as "strengthening" in metals. A considerable amount of additional work has also been clone on single-crystal zinc, but as it 'is not closely related to the present paper it will not be considered. Throughout all the former work, the mechanism of plastic deformation first described by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid has been assumed to hold. This may be said to offer the strongest confirmation of its correctness. Even so, the picture of the process has never been as completely portrayed as is desirable. The first object of the present paper is to describe work that has been done in this field, and which is even yet being carried on, in the hope that a more complete picture may be obtained. Mathewson and Phillips3 have recently described a new mechanism of the deformation of zinc based on their study of large rectangular crystals. One of their conclusions was that deformation produced twinning with a rotation of some of the basal planes into positions 94° removed from their original position; a position almost the same as that of the prismatic planes before twinning. A second conclusion was that fracture occurred along these basal planes in their new position, and, therefore that fractures previously regarded as prismatic were in reality basal. Such findings are of great significance and they raise a question as to the generality of such behavior. Professor Mathewson's opinion is that even the slender cylindrical single crystals behave in the same manner as his large rectangular crystals when strained by simple tension.

The outlook for suppliers of energy to the expanding economies of the Pacific Basin region is essentially positive, but particularly for exporters of high quality steam coal. This paper argues that economic growth in the Pacific Basin region has exceeded world economic growth for some years and that this will continue to be the case for the next decade at least. It looks briefly at the link between economic growth and energy demand and at the relationship between energy demand and the demand for electricity.Changing preferences in fuel mix for electrical generation in the region are noted and tentative forecasts made about variations in this mix. The pros and cons of various forms of fuel used to generate electricity are considered from the point of view of the consumer.
