WE associate metals with hardness, toughness, and strength. But a curious paradox lies at the root of the valuable mechanical proper-ties of the metallic state: in order to be strong, a metal must be weak. This paradox, and the equally surprising fact that, in a sense, metals are not true solids at all, are among the topics here discussed by Sir Lawrence Bragg. (1) WHAT METALS MEAN TO US We employ various materials to build or fabricate the many objects we use in everyday life, choosing those whose properties are most suitable for the purpose which the object has to serve. Certain of these materials have been used from the earliest times, such as stone, wood, leather, and animal or vegetable fibres, each with its own peculiar valuable properties. Stone resists crushing and is very durable and permanent, as indeed it must be, since it has so long resisted change as a part of-the earth's crust. It is there-fore ideal for walls and buildings, and very early in his history man discovered how to make artificial stones by burning clay, with the advantage that they could be given any desired shape, and made into bricks or given elaborate forms as pottery. Wood is strong and tough and light, it resists tension as well as compression, and is nor brittle like stone. It forms beams and furniture and parts of tools or weapons. Leather is tough but at the same time iris flexible; it is ideal as straps or sheers. Vegetable fibres such as linen or cotton, and animal fibres such as wool and silk, owe their value to their flexibility and strength in resisting extension. They can be spun into yarn or rope, and woven into cloth. The technological age in which we are now living is replacing the natural products used by early man by a series of artificial products, but it is remarkable to see how in nearly every case we are copying Nature's materials. The wide use of concrete represents a developed art of making artificial stone. Artificial fibres such as rayon or ?nylon replace cotton, wool, and flax. Plastics are coming very much to the fore; they correspond to early man's use of horn, another substance with peculiar properties of roughness in all directions without the 'grain' of wood. For the most part we are following in the footsteps of our remote ancestors, though we can make for ourselves what they had to cull from wood and field. There are exceptions; for instance, we have discovered comparatively recently the number of uses to which natural rubber can be put, and are now making it artificially. This is a really new discovery; our ancestors had nothing with such remarkable powers of elastic stretching without breaking, and resistance to being abraded.

The effect of solute concentration and diffussivity on dendritic solidification of dilute binary aqueous solutions has been investigated; chlorides of sodium, potassium, lithiurn, and hydrogen were used as solutes. Dendrite spacings were measured in spherical droplets and in unidirectionally solidified specimens. In the droplets, the freezing rate is uniform over the entire specimen and remains constant from the beginning to the end of solidification. In the unidirec-tionally frozen specimens the freezing rate varies within a given volume of liquid during the solidification cycle; in addition, it varies with location uithin the specimen. Mass transport analysis has been used to calculate the supersaturation, AC, supercooling, AT, and transcerse growth velocity, V , of ice dendrites during solidijication from the dendrite spacings measured in the droplels. The ice dendrite spacing in a given solute increases lineary with the solule concentralion at a fixed freezing rate. The ualues of AC, AT, and V increase with an increase in solule concentration. The value of AT in the aqueous solution is of the same order of magnitude as in Al-Cu alloys of the same concentration; the dendrite spacings in Al-Cu alloys also increase with an increase in solute concentralion. For the jamily of aqueozrs solulions incestigaled, the dendrite spacing increases linearly with solute diffusivity at fixed values of concertralion and freezing ,rate. The values of ?C and ?T decrease, whereas the value of V increases with an increase in solule diffusicity. K. = -132 ± 10) 1. FREEZING of solutions is almost always an ehunmix-ing" process because the composition of crystallizing solid generally differs from that of the parent liquid. " Solute concentration and transport are therefore in]portant considerations in solidification of solutions. The influence of these factors on the dendritic solutions produced from metallic solutions is of practical significance since the properties of the solid aggre-gate are often strongly influenced by dendrite spacing.''' Alexander and Fthines3 found that dendrite spac- ings generally increase with solute concentration in several metallic systems. Michael and Bever1 have observed an increase in a aluminum dendrite spacings in dilute A1-Cu alloys. Rohatgi and AdamsJ have reported a linear increase in a aluminum dendrite spacings with increasing copper contents up to 28 pct in A1-Cu alloys. Bolling and Tiller"' have theoretically examined the effects of solute concentration and diffusivity on the growth of cells and dendrites. Their analysis of dendritic growth assumes a steady-state growth and the maximum possible velocity for dendrite propagation. In addition, the quantitative analysis is restricted to dendrites of rotational symmetry and is therefore not directly applicable to the plate-shaped dendrites of ice obtained in the present study. There are practically no experimental observations of the effect of solute diffusivity on dendrite spacings in metallic systems. The reason appears to be the lack of experimental data on solute diffusion coefficients in liquid metallic solutions. The present work is concerned with the effect of solute concentration and diffusivity on dendritic solidification of dilute aqueous solutions: the solutes examined are potassium chloride. sodium chloride, lithium chloride. and hydrogen chloride. There were several reasons for selecting these solutes. The variation of dendrite spacing with freezing rate in these solutiolls is similar to that observed in A1-Cu alloys.8 These aqueous solutions have almost identical phase diagrams at dilute concentrations. In the period 1970-1995, a number of hydro metallurgical processes to treat copper concentrates to overcome the pollution problem due to S02 emission in smelters were developed. Pilot and commercial scale plants were built and operated for some time, but eventually all were abandoned a few years later. It is constructive to examine why these processes were abandoned after so much expenditure of funds and effort, so that errors should not be repeated in the future and lessons from the past are learned.

After the explosion at Middelbult Colliery, South Africa in May1993, which claimed 53 lives, the South African Coal Mining Industry and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) united forces to establish a surface facility to develop and test on-board flame suppression systems for continuous miners and roadheaders. The first test that was conducted in this newly constructed test tunnel at the Kloppersbos Research Facility, CSIR was in July 1995.Since then 70 tests have been conducted using the facility and have focused on on-board active ignition suppression systems for continuous miners (CM) and road heading (RH) machines to enhance the safety of South African mine workers in collieries. These suppression systems are mounted on the CM or RH machine and detect the occurrence of an ignition by means of light-sensitive sensors. The electronic signal from the sensor triggers the suppression system, creating a flame-suppression curtain, containing and extinguishing the flame in the immediate vicinity of the ignition. Forty-three tests have been conducted with an active on-board suppression system present inside the test tunnel. Since flame propagation speed is an extremely important parameter, the CSIR-Miningtek made the results of the test programme available for re-analysis. Flame speed depended on whether a machine was present in the heading or not, the geometry of the heading and the volume and composition of the explosive mixture of gas. Flame speeds of up to 190 m/s were recorded. However, the active suppression systems were almost always successful in containing flame propagation.

Those developing or planning a new mining operation base their financial projections on amounts of gold produced as soon as practically possible. The choice and ongoing operation of mobile plant figures significantly in their projections. The implications of mobile plant selection are not always clear - until its too late.Our 'typical' gold mine would be a mine processing 800,000 tonnes of ore per annum, producing 37,000 ounces of gold with a life of mine of 10 years. Overburden layers are only evident in the first two years of operation.The pit will eventually, after some 5 years of mining, be some 300 metres deep, but confined to a mine radius of 2 kilometres.

"New metal working processes, such as the mashy-state mixing, mashy-state forging, mashy-state rolling and mashy-state extrusion are developed and applied to manufacture the so-called particle reinforced metals, fiber reinforced metals, particle reinforced cladding metals and so forth. These metal-ceramics composites are made of metal sheets, metal powders, ceramics particles and ceramics fibers. The mashy-state processes are also used to work those composites into bars, wires, tubes, plates, sheets, machine parts and other products. The working conditions necessary to manufacture sound composite products are clarified and the mechanical properties of the products are investigated. Through the investigation, it becomes clear that the mashy-state processes are useful and effective to manufacture metal-ceramics composites. It is al so known that these processes may be applied in various ways to development of new metal matrix compounds. IntroductionThe so-called metal-ceramics composites and processes to manufacture them are now being widely investigated in order to comply with increasing demands for new materials with novel and excellent mechanical properties and functions. The metal-ceramics composites are expected to have superior characteristics with respect to the elastic modulus, hardness, anti-wear resistance, high temperature strength and other mechanical properties to those of conventional metallic materials.The present authors ha v e been investigating into new metal working processes which are based upon the characteristics of metals and their alloys in the mashy-state. In the mashy-state, the metal (or alloy) includes both of the solid and liquid components. According to the fact that the partial melting takes place and the liquid component usually exists at grain boundaries, the metal in the mashy-state has quite different mechanical properties from those of the metal in the solid-state. Because of that the bonding force among grains is very weak due to the partial melting occurred at grain boundaries, the mashy metal has distinctively low flow-stress and high deformability. The mashy metal splits into grains or particles and sticks to others very easily. It is so soft as to be stirred up just like a lump of sherbet, but it is sufficiently viscous to be mixed up with other materials, such as ceramics particles and ceramics short-cut fibers."

The pressure pulse generated by an underwater spark \vas investigated in relation to its potential use for rock fragmentation. The study established (1) the relation between the peak discharge current and the peak wave pressure; (2) the relationships among the peak wave pressure, the discharge voltage, and the spark gap width; (3) the type and pulse duration of the generated wave; (4) the percentage of energy transmitted in the spark as a function of spark gap width and discharge voltage; and (5) the percentage of energy converted into the pressure wave as a function of gap width and discharge voltage. Spark-generated fractures were studied in two-and three-dimensional rock and plastic specimens. The laboratory results indicated that the pressure pulse generated by an underwater spark is a potential practical tool for rock fragmentation. The paper contains an appendix describing the capacitive pressure gage specially developed for the laboratory tests.

Approximately 200 samples of iron ores and other iron- bearing materials have been tested for amenability to treatment by the R-N process in bench scale laboratory work. Twelve large lots, ranging in size from 900 net tons to 18,500 net tons, but generally 3,000 to 4,000 tons each, have been processed in the R-N demonstration plant. The ores tested in the demonstration plant ranged from 27 to 70 percent iron content and gave excellent results. (1) The demonstration plant has a nominal daily capacity of 50 tons of high quality iron briquettes and has now operated for over five years. A continuing program of process improvement is carried on between demonstration on potential licenses ores. An important development is the complete elimination of any secondary products which, in the past (2,3,4,5), resulted from treatment of certain low-grade ores.

This paper discusses how the information on ash composition, ash-fusion temperatures, and ash-slag viscosity can be utilized to predict slagging and fouling potentials of a particular coal. A review of several empirical parameters which are commonly in use for determining such potentials is given. Also, some guideline values for interpreting the relative propensity of slagging and fouling of various types of coal are provided.

THE thermal analysis of a metal or alloy is ordinarily made with the aid of heating and cooling curves, in which transitions are indicated by the rapid changes in curvature that accompany .changes in the rate of heat absorption or evolution. Analysis by the method that depends on the change in thermal expansivity is not customary, partly, at least, because of the difficulties involved in making the necessary measurements. However, under certain circumstances, the dilatometric method of analysis may possess advantages over the thermometric method that will justify the additional trouble required. The addition of 1 per cent. of zinc to an alloy has been found to produce, upon the volume changes that take place during transition, effects that suggest the possibility of using the dilatometric method of thermal analysis as a rather sensitive means of obtaining chemical information. Although the illustrations presented in this paper are drawn from data obtained during an investigation of dental amalgams, similar phenomena can doubtless be observed with other alloys. Some of the results found during an investigation made in 19171 have been confirmed by data on the thermal expansivity of amalgams published by Souder and Peters of the Bureau of Standards in reporting tests of dental materials.2 Although the Bureau of. Standards made experiments for the purpose of discovering effects of including zinc as one of the constituents of a dental alloy-a matter much discussed in dental literature but without the presentation of reliable experimental evidence to support the views of ;either side-the reports of the test made by the Bureau give the impression that certain striking phenomena associated with the presence of zinc were not noticed. Among such phenomena are those connected with the conditions that determine whether or not a specimen of amalgam becomes covered with droplets from which crystals develop.

IN A DISCUSSION of use of any material of ?construction in the mining industry, two points of view must 'be kept in mind - that of the producer or manufacturer of mining and metallurgical equipment, and that of the maintenance and operating staff of the mining plant. In the first case, the choice of material of construction is up to the manufacturer and the user of the equipment has little direct say in the matter. However, if materials are badly chosen and the equipment does not function properly, wears out rapidly, or costs too much, repeat orders ?will likely go to a different manufacturer, so that, in the end, the consumer or mine operator does have the final voice. In the case of materials for maintenance work and plant operations, however, .the mill personnel have direct control over purchases and it is then that a well-balanced knowledge of materials, their properties, and their costs, can be directly useful. With all materials of construction, the final criterion is unit cost versus service performance, so that the lowest possible total operational cost will be obtained. Sometimes this means using the cheapest material available, sometimes the most expensive, but in any case careful analysis of service performance, replacement cost, and material cost is essential to determining the material that produces lowest total cost.

One of the primary interests of the United States Department of Energy's Mine Planning Division is to fully develop avenues of technical research which potentially offer positive effects on coal mine productivity. One such area of research involves the removal of methane gas from unmined portions of coalbeds through vertical wells drilled from surface locations. As coalbed methane content is reduced, less gas is available for flow into the mine, and consequently ventilation requirements are decreased and/or coal extraction rates increase. Another attractive aspect of the vertical borehole drainage method is that it presents an opportunity to recover and utilize significant quantities of methane gas, which would otherwise be wasted to the atmosphere. The viability of removing gas from the Mary Lee coalbed using stimulated vertical boreholes was first suggested by Elder and Deul as a result of a United States Bureau of Mines' drilling project conducted from 1971 to 1974 (4). Other United States Bureau of Mines' studies forecasted that degasification would eventually be necessary in the Mary Lee coalbed because most new or expanding mine development would take place at depths exceeding 1 000 feet (305 meters), where the methane problem would be severe (3) (13). In 1975 a large-scaled drilling program was designed in order to supply industry's anticipated need for a degasification technology in the Warrior coal basin, Alabama. The results of this government/industry sponsored effort were to be specifically applicable to the Mary Lee coalbed, the most extensive and economically important deep minable coal present in the area. Major technical objectives of this program are twofold: (1) to measure the effects of various well completion designs, particularly hydraulic stimulation, on mining and (2) to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates. A cooperative agreement was established with United States Steel Corporation in late 1975 and field work began shortly thereafter in the proximity of a newly developing mine near Oak Grove, Alabama. Government responsibility for this program was transferred from the United States Bureau of Mines to the United States Department of Energy in October 1977. To date, as a result of this program, twenty-one wells have been completed into the Mary Lee coalbed at the Oak Grove site. Seventeen of these wells were drilled on an experimental grid pattern located two miles from the active mine. These grid wells are primarily being used to generate data necessary to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates and will also provide a large amount of information regarding the long-term effects of degasification on mining. The four remaining wells (designated Ton through TW4) were placed near the mine so that the full effects of completion could be studied within the short time required for underground interception. Results gathered from the first two test wells (TW1 and TW2) have been reported in detail (10) and indicated that several improvements were necessary to increase gas drainage rates. Hydraulic stimulation was one of the most important aspects of well design that required improvement. Nitrogen-charged foam stimulation treatment was used at TW3 and TW4 instead of the gelled-fluid type stimulation used at the first two near-mine test wells.

INTRODUCTION The Jim Walter Corporation is a Florida based organization with diverse interests. They have operations in many states and overseas, but the heart of the company is in the southeast. The major part of the corporation's business is home building and everything that is related to it. In 1969, the Jim Walter Corporation gained an interest in coal mining through the acquisition of the U. S. Pipe & Foundry Company which had two slope mines to supply its requirement of metallurgical coal. In the early 1970's it was decided to enlarge the coal mining activities and work was started on the Blue Creek project. This involved sinking four new deep mines (originally there were to have been five but it was later decided that the property could be satisfactorily worked by four mines). They are all located in west central Alabama between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. They have a combined projected output of 7314 million tons of very high grade metallurgical coal per year to be reached by the mid 1980's. These new mines are all to work the Blue Creek seam which is a very gassy seam and in the area to be mined is found at between 45m (1500 ft.) and 731m (2400 ft.) below the surface. Longwall is the only practicable method of mining to produce the planned outputs in the conditions prevailing and each mine is planned to have three longwalls as the primary production system. Continuous miners will be used just to do the development work for the longwalls. No. 3 Mine is the most advanced of the mines and started the first longwall early in 1979. The second unit started in the middle of 1980 and the third is scheduled for mid 1981. The first longwall at No. 4 Mine is expected to commence production early in 1982. This paper attempts to relate some of the problems that have been encountered and the lessons that have been learned.

The mineral industries have a continuing need for market forecasting and analysis for a variety of purposes, among which are organization and control of the sales effort, financial and corporate planning, and evaluation of the anticipated revenue from investment in proposed projects. For anything beyond the simplest extrapolation, some kind of economic reasoning or analysis is called for, which may or may not be incorporated into a formal or quantitative model. The principles described here apply to most of the commercially significant minerals and metals. The examples are drawn largely from the copper market, as it is the one with which I have the most practical experience. Practical forecasting is the process of analysis and synthesis from three categories of knowledge: facts and statistics, theory, and practical knowledge and informed opinion. Although many attempts have been made to build forecasts on only one of these three pillars, none has been successful as an operating procedure because of the lack of balance. There are no facts about the future-only about the present and the past. Facts can illuminate the future, but the future can be described only in terms of probability or more or less likely states of affairs-not as a continuous extension of the past and present. Likewise, theory, although useful as an organizing discipline and for providing a methodology of analysis, is inadequate for the complexities of reality. This is especially so when there is feedback between plans and forecasts to produce a new outcome and when there are significant elements of unpredictable free will, such as presidential jawboning or foreign policy considerations. Such elements are difficult to accommodate in neat theories, although they must certainly be reflected in the forecasts. Pure opinion frequently suffers from both a lack of-disciplined reasoning and the presence of biases or self-interest. While the future is unknown, it tends to cast its shadow before it; hence, forecasting is the art and science of positioning oneself so that the shadow becomes visible to the forecaster.

ABOUT three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. ? This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some com-ments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. The new Cyprus Miami electrolytic copper refinery was commissioned in October 1994. The refinery has been operating at its design capacity of 190,000 short tons per year, and in recent months to 110% of design capacity, producing high-grade electrolytic copper cathodes. Basic and detailed engineering, performed by Fluor Daniel Mining and Minerals, incorporated state-of-the-art technology, including stainless steel cathodes, automated electrode handling, fine-filtering of the commercial electrolyte, autoclave leaching of the anode slimes and other techniques. The major design goals have been safety of operation and quality of the product. Relatively high cathode current densities of 30 amperes per square foot and greater have been applied since start-up. Cathode current efficiencies of over 94% have been achieved since the latter part of 1997. The cathodes were certified on the Comex and LME markets during 1996. ISO- 9002 certification is in progress and should be completed during the first quarter of next year. This report discusses some of the studies that were performed to obtain an optimum layout for efficient materials handling and to create optimum conditions for producing high quality cathodes. A description of the design and operation of the anode slimes facility, including decopperizing with autoclave leaching, is provided. Finally, a description of the start-up experiences and present operation of the electrorefinery are presented.

The zero-points-of-charge of apatite, calcite, and fluorite are pH 6.4, 10.8, and 10.0, respectively. Scheelite is negatively charged above at least pH 3. In this article, the flotation responses of these minerals in the presence of potassium oleate and sodium silicate are described and compared with electrokinetic data. Colloidal silica appears to be the species principally responsible for calcite depression, while silicate anion is the species responsible for fluorite depression. Additions as high as 1 x 10-3 mole/liter silicate have no effect on the flotation responses of apatite and scheelite. Selective flotation of nonmetallic minerals is difficult to achieve with fatty acids or soaps by themselves. As a result, specific reagents are added to aid these separations, and one of the reagents commonly employed for this purpose is sodium silicate. Flotation separations of various calcium-bearing minerals such as fluorite from calcite1-3 and scheelite from calcite2,4 and apatite,2,5 for example, almost always involve the use of sodium silicate. The mechanisms by which sodium silicate functions as a depressant are still not understood, probably for a number of reasons. For one thing, the dissolution process of sodium silicate is complex, giving rise to a number of ionic and colloidal species.' Moreover, the type and concentration of these species depend on the ratio of Na2O to SiO2, the concentration of sodium silicate, and the pH of the system.' At the present time, it is not known which species, colloidal silica or silicate anion, is responsible for depression. If colloidal silica is the species that is adsorbing, then adsorption must occur by electrostatic attraction between the colloid and the mineral surface. Silicate anion, on the other hand, may adsorb either physically or chemically. The objective of this paper is to determine first the active species of sodium silicate and then the conditions under which this species will adsorb and function as a depressant. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Pure samples of apatite (Durango), calcite (Iceland-spar), fluorite, and scheelite were used in this investigation. Pure potassium oleate was used as collector, while reagent-grade HC1 and KOH were employed for pH adjustment. The sodium silicates used were samples obtained from the Philadelphia Quartz Co. In one series of experiments, various sodium silicates containing different ratios of SiO2 to Na2O were added to calcite systems. These sodium silicates contained SiO2-to-Na2O ratios of 3.75 to 1, 3.22 to 1, 2.40 to 1, and 1.60 to 1. All other experiments were conducted with the sodium silicate containing the ratio of 3.22 to 1, which is the one that is normally used in industry. Flotation experiments were conducted with 21/2-g charges of 48 x 150-mesh material in conductivity water with an apparatus and technique described previously. Electrokinetic experiments were conducted with both a Zeta Meter and streaming potential apparatus. Particle size was 48 x 65 mesh for the streaming potential experiments. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The first series of experiments involved flotation of scheelite in the absence and presence of sodium silicate. As shown in Fig. 1, flotation response was not affected with even the relatively high addition of 1 x 10-3 mole per liter sodium silicate. Interestingly though, no flotation was effected below pH 6 with this collector addition. The responses of apatite to flotation under these same conditions are given in Fig. 2. Similarly, no depression was obtained in basic media under these conditions. "Under the auspices of the Commission of the European Union, a consortium composed of six European organi~ations has conducted a project to scale up the PLACID electrowinning cell to industrial size within the Placid process development. This paper is concerning the results and achievement of the industrial cell prototype after more than 1,000 hours operating time and about 10,000 Kg electrolytic lead production. In general, results have been very satisfactory, demonstrating the ability ofthe PLACID electrowinning cell to produce top quality electrolytic lead (> 99.99 %) with high current efficiency and low energy consumption.IntroductionThis paper is concerning the development of an industrial size PLACID electrowinning cell within the PLACID process development. This project began on January 1993 and was finished on April 1996.Lead metal production and manufacturing industries produce large amounts of dusts and also lead bearing slags. Spent lead-acid battery recycling also produces lead oxides from the battery pastes rather similar to those mentioned above. Those lead secondary materials are hazardous and difficult to handle by usual procedures.Existing processes to treat-lead oxides may inflict considerable damage on the environment, incur high operating costs and have limitations to produce top quality lead.The main aim of this project has been to develop a novel hydrometallurgical process able to deal with different lead bearing materials, mainly lead oxide secondaries: lead-acid battery pastes, lead fumes, furnace slags, oxide residues, etc., producing ""four nines"" pure lead in an efficient manner with a benign influence on the environment; it is called the PLACID process."
