"ALTHOUGH final statistics are not yet available concerning Nova Scotia' s mineral production for 1958, it is estimated that the value will be slightly lower than that of 1957. In making this statement it is but fair to say that one year ago a reduction in mineral value was also forecast (for 1957 as compared with 1956) and final figures from the Dominion Bureau of Statistics ($68,058,743) indicated, instead, an increase of $2,000,000 over 1956. However, 1958 did bring problems to the industry which would indicate a drop in production value. The estimates figure for 1958 is $64,000,000. COAL Coal production came from 28 mines, 5 less than were operating since 1957. There were 5,269,896 tons of coal produced by 1,978,512 man-days' labour, for a tons per man-shift of 2.66 (0.05 higher than during 1957) or an increase of 1.9 per cent over the 1957 all-time high for this Province. This record has been established as a result of concentrated efforts to mechanize the coal mines of the Province, and it is hoped that it will be bettered during 1959. Collieries which showed some production for 1957 and none for 1958 were the McGregor at Stellarton, the Franklin at Sydney Mines, the MacLellan, the Rose bank No. 2 and the Rose bank No. 3 at Inverness."

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of California is the 'eighth in a series on the producing districts of the United States. It includes discussion of results, tabulated data, and individual analyses of typical California crudes. Additional analyses of crude oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, end Ventura Counties will be published later in another Serial of the Bureau, but the summary tabulations are presented here. The samples represented in this report were collected over a rather wide interval of tine, the early samples having been obtained during the fall of 1919, and the most recent ones dating from the summer of 1923. It is thought that the samples are fairly representative, both of the older settled production and of the new flush production of the southern California fields.

Historical investigations of mineral flotation have highlighted the many factors which affect flotation. Some of these are related to the mineral, its degree of liberation (however defined), solution chemistry and flotation reagents. The complexity of the interactions between these factors often leads to uncertainty over whether the final grade/recovery results obtained in either laboratory or pilot scale tests are in fact the maximum recovery at a specific grade. The reason for this is that there has not previously been a general technique for establishing the floatability of an ore. This study describes the further development of the 'tree' flotation technique for minerals other than coal, and in particular its application to iron ores. Oxides have been chosen as a system of intermediate complexity between the simple coal system and sulphide minerals to illustrate the principles and develop the concepts. The 'tree' flotation procedure consists of the progressive flotation to completion of successive froth products, followed by reflotation to remove entrained material. It therefore represents an 'equilibrium' approach to floatability rather than a kinetic approach. By ordering the various products and tails in order of increasing grade, a cumulative curve of grade and recovery can be constructed against which an isolated batch or plant result on the same ore can be compared. In this investigation, a Jaspilitic iron ore was tested at various grind sizes to determine the 'best' flotation grade-recovery that could be obtained with a given set of reagent conditions. The separation characteristics of a process are best measured on a system which contains particles which behave as 'middlings' with respect to the process in question. For this reason a natural ore was chosen in preference to model systems in order to relate more readily to plant situations.

PanAust Limited (PanAust) has successfully constructed and commissioned two mining operations in Lao PDR over the past decade and undertaken major studies for three new mine developments. The management of potentially acid generating mine waste and tailings in close proximity of local communities sensitive to water discharge quality have been recurring themes that have confronted PanAust’s project study, development and operational teams. Further compounding challenges, such as the effects of intense annual tropical monsoonal conditions, staging of embankment raises and regular lifting of spillway structures, integrating mine waste and tailings management into production plans and ensuring the long term stability of structures, have been addressed by implementing leading practice management solutions.A recognition of the criticality of managing the substantial business risks associated with these crucial activities led to the early establishment of a governance structure to ensure that the highest standards are embraced for planning and execution. Importantly, these are guided and monitored by a panel of highly experienced and qualified international specialists reporting directly to PanAust’s Managing Director – the Tailings Independent Review Panel. The shrinkage method of stoping with pillar support has been used at Agnes Gold Mine since mining commenced. Until recently, rock instability did not have any detrimental effect on safety or production. Presently sill pillars are failing not only on the current production levels, but also in shallower old worked-out areas. The incidence of failure raises the question as to whether the pillar dimensions are adequate at the current working depths and what their size should be at greater depths. The effect of pillar dimensions on the economics of the mining operation is of paramount importance because of the amount of ore that can be left unmined.

The refractory lining of the tuyere line in Peirce Smith converters have usually much shorter life in service than the rest of the lining, above or below it. There are already recognized chemical, thermal and mechanical factors which contribute to the wear of the lining. Our study presents the experimental results on microstructural changes occurring on these tuyere line bricks in a nickelcopper converter. The experimental bricks, after use at the tuyere line, were investigated using SEM/EDS and XRD techniques, to identify the mineralogical changes due to interactions with the nickel-copper matte or fayalite type slag at the process temperatures. The microstructural changes were correlated with physical and mechanical properties of the brick before and after use and a wear mechanism was suggested. Although the matte does not theoretically react with the mineralogical components of the brick, a partial oxidation of the Ni-Cu sulphides was identified using a line analysis by SEM/EDS in the densified layer at the hot face, which allows for mineralogical changes at the matte-refractory interfaces, with a high probability of microcrack formation due to the thermal cycling during use. These microcracks were also identified to open through inter-granular fractures parallel to the hot face, which appeared to be the main cause of lost lining during use. The reactions between the fayalite slag and refractory brick could eventually play a role in chemical dissolution of the brick only in the superficial layer at the hot face, as no slag components were identified deep into the brick.

The purpose and current practice of cable trusses in underground coal mines is briefly outlined and details of various cable truss designs are presented. The main part of the paper describes the in-situ performance of cable trusses installed as secondary supports in gateroads and recovery roads of longwall coalfaces. The performance analysis is based on the results of in-situ monitoring carried out at a number of sites at two underground coal mines within Australia. Truss performance has been assessed as load developed in relation to roof convergence, face position and time. Additionally, the influence of strata conditions, installation pattern/density, roadway layout and geometry have been taken into account. An analytical model has been developed to predict truss loads. The principal variables are listed and the basis of the model is described. Based upon behaviour observed in the field the model has been progressively upgraded and validated against measured performance. Guidelines on truss performance and factors which influence it are presented and the implications of these to the use of cable trusses is discussed. Possible methods for improving truss performance in certain strata conditions are outlined and some comments are made on the value of cable trussing compared to cable bolting in these situations,

.I. S. Huckaba (Western Machinery Co., Spokane, Wash.)—It has been my pleasure and privilege to be able to follow this work with the H.M.S. pilot plant very closely. This has been a very thorough and painstaking piece of work and will be of great value to the dense-media operators and manufacturers. Unfortunately time was not available to make an accurate comparison between this pilot plant and the commercial plant at Bellingham Coal Mines, both plants having Wemco drum separators. Briefly I would like to point out what I consider the most interesting finding of this work. Capacity: Very good results were obtained at a feed mte of 5.2 tons per hr in a 30-in diam by 24-in. long drum separator. The maximum capacity of this drum is not known but it is something over 5.2 tons per hr for the available area of 2.08 sq ft. The word adapt means "to change so that one's behavior will conform to new or changed circumstances." Applying this definition to process controllers suggests that an adaptive controller can change its behavior in response to changes in the dynamics and disturbances of the process. In the minerals industry there are many control cases where adaptive control will provide superior control as compared with more traditional PID (proportional, integral, derivative) control. A typical plant uses as many as 100 to 200 control loops for lprocess regulation. Therefore, the task of initially tuning and then periodically retuning these controllers is a formidable problem, During the time the controllers are "un-tuned", product quality may deteriorate and unstable operations may result. Adaptive controllers are capable of tuning themselves, thus avoiding this problem. The computers commonly used in distributed control systems are easily capable of implementing adaptive controllers. In addition to the possibility of using the control computer to implement adaptive controllers, many distributed control systems will offer adaptive control as a standard feature in the near future.

In spite of advances in measurement techniques and an explosive increase in the volume of research, our understanding of human strength remains in its introductory stages. It is clear that muscle strength is a highly complex and variable function that depends on a large number of factors. It is not surprising, therefore, that large differences in strength exist not only between individuals, but even within the same individual tested repeatedly on a given piece of equipment. The issue is compounded by the fact that correlations of strength among different muscle groups in the same individual are generally low, and tests of isometric strength do not necessarily reflect the strength an individual might exhibit in a dynamic test. As a result of these and other influences, great care needs to be exercised in designing, evaluating, reporting, and interpreting muscular strength assessments. Traditionally, tests of muscular strength were in the domain of the orthopaedist, physical therapist, and exercise physiologist. Such tests are also an important tool for the ergonomist, however, because of the high strength demands on workers in manual materials-handling tasks. In some cases, task demands may approach or even exceed the strength that an individual is voluntarily willing to exert in a test of strength. In such cases, evidence suggests that the likelihood of injury is significantly greater than when the task demands lie well within an individual's strength capacity. Because the relationship among strength capabilities, job demands, and musculoskeletal injury has been established, it is apparent that tests of muscular strength may benefit the ergonomist both in designing jobs and in ensuring that individuals have sufficient strength to safely perform physically demanding jobs. Several strength assessment techniques have been employed for these purposes, each possessing unique characteristics and applicability to job design and worker selection procedures. Our main purpose has been to elucidate these strengths and weaknesses, so that tests of strength may be properly applied in designing jobs and selecting workers. One of the crucial points we have emphasized is that any test of strength used in job design or worker selection must be directly related to the demands of the job.(1) For example, if an occupational lifting task has a high dynamic component, a test of isometric strength is not likely to provide the data necessary for proper design of the job. Of course, dynamic strength tests would also be misapplied in assessing a job requiring isometric exertions. Another potential pitfall is using tests of strength on isolated muscle groups and assuming that they are indicative of whole-body strength. For example, one might mistakenly assume that dynamic trunk extension strength represents a person's capability to perform a lifting task. However, an individual's lifting capacity may be entirely unrelated to trunk extension strength. It may, instead, be limited by an individual's arm or leg strength, depending on the task being performed. A final point on strength assessment should be made. The lithium solubility limit in solid aluminum was determined by the use of micro-graphic techniques. The solubility limit thus established was shown to be a true equilibrium by checking the reversibility of AlLi phase precipitation and dissolution around the equilibrium temperature. The experimental results fit a straight line by plotting log N(LI) against 1/T. The metallurgical reasons explaining the lack of agreement among previous investigations are discussed. THE solubility limit of lithium in solid aluminum was determined by Shamray and Saldau1 by micrography and by Grube et al.' and also Voss-Kiihler- by measurement of electrical resistivity. Since the addition of lithium induces extremely small changes in the aluminum lattice, X-ray techniques could not be employed for this purpose; in fact, the addition of lithium does not cause an expansion of the lattice as might be expected from a consideration of atomic radii, but causes a small contraction from 4.040 to 4.037A3, 4 when the solvent aluminum is saturated with this element. An analysis of the results from previous investiga-tions'" shows that with improvement of investigation techniques the solubility limit tends toward a lower lithium content. Again, some of the author's own experimental results on the action of atomic hydrogen on A1-Li alloys seemed to indicate that the solubility of lithium should be much lower, i.e., about 0.3 pet at 300°C: instead of 1.15 pet, the lowest published value.4 For the foregoing reasons it was decided to investigate this problem. The aluminum and the lithium used for this purpose were of the highest purity. The lithium solubility limit was determined by metallographic techniques, in particular by the use of a reagent especially developed for the purpose of revealing the AlLi phase. The solubility limit thus determined was shown to be a true equilibrium by checking the reversibility of AlLi phase dissolution and precipitation around the equilibrium temperature. All of the experimental work was carried out in 1951 at the Centre d'Etudes de Chimie Metallur-gique at Vitry, France, under the direction of Georges Chaudron.

"The effect of capillarity-driven diffusion on the recalescence of mushy zones is studied in pure materials. The solid-liquid mixture is formed by rapid partial solidification of an initially undercooled melt, and the ratio of the two phases is subsequently maintained constant by an externally imposed adiabatic constraint. A novel technique has been developed that permits tracking of the kinetics of the diffusion-controlled evolution process in situ using precision temperature measurements averaged on a length scale larger than that of the microstructure.The mean ""temperature of a mushy zone is slightly below the bulk equilibrium melting point, and is related to a characteristic length scale of the microstructure through an appropriate statistical average of the GibbsThomson equation. Theoretical considerations indicate that the diffusion controlled recalescence will progress as t- l / 3, where t is time. This behavior is experimentally verified for both succinonitrile (SCN) and ethylene carbonate (ETC), which have markedly different morphologies. The kinetic rate constant is observed to increase monotonically with increasing volume fraction of solid in the two-phase mixtures, although a firm theoretical foundation for this result has not been developed.INTRODUCTIONA dispersed multiphase system seeking equilibrium will generally contain variations in the local .free energy density. These density variations arise from such factors as variations in the bulk free energies of the phases and the distribution of interfacial energies. The domestic mining industry continued to be strengthened and revitalized in 1989. The healthy conditions and the industry comeback that began in 1987 continued to spread and became more established for many commodities. Relatively comfortable and stable commodity prices, still found predominantly in the metals sector, reinforced other operational factors in bringing vitality to the mining and mineral processing industries. New streamlined business practices, mine and plant modernizations, and the progressive use of new technologies successfully helped lower operating costs and increase efficiency during the past 5 to 7 years. An element common to these three factors of industry renewal and growth was the ever-increasing infusion of and growing dependence on constantly advancing computer technology applications. This trend of increasing computerization was occurring throughout the mining and mineral processing business while it similarly was in most facets of modern business and culture. Some commodities and companies still struggled to outlive sluggish prices and other unstable market conditions or to modernize their businesses, but increases in productivity and profits were more common. A trend toward increased mechanical excavation in nonsoil materials was beginning to surface as a substitute for standard cyclic mine development techniques, such as drill-and-blast and surface shovel-and-truck routines. More continuous mechanical excavation offered the potential for increased production, fewer people at the working face, better ground control, and generally improved safety. The main limitation was rock hardness. The construction industry had already recognized the benefits of tunnel-boring machines for long underground drives and mechanical planers for pavement removal. The Colorado School of Mines held a short course during the year entitled, "Mechanical Excavation Techniques in Mine Development and Production,'" which was at-tended by nearly 100 engineers from 12 countries. The consensus of attendees was that for the most efficient use of these machines and techniques, new mining plans needed to be developed beyond the simple adaptation of those excavators to existing mine plans.1

Studies were carried out on dissolution and oxidation of iron powder in ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution using oxygen over pressures. Cobalt and nickel losses during iron oxidation under different conditions were investigated. Regression equations were derived for percent cobalt loss and percent iron oxidation using ammonia, ammonium carbonate and oxygen partial pressure as the variables. The equations were tested for adequacy using Fisher's test. Cobalt losses increased with the increase of initial cobalt concentration and about 400 mg/l of cobalt was lost from a solution containing 500 mg/l cobalt. A maximum of about 80 mg/l nickel was lost from 1 g/l nickel containing solution, and this loss remained the same even when the nickel concentration was increased to 7.5 g/l.

The mining industry views with the utmost concern, legislative or administrative action that inherently reduces the scope for exploration activity. Is there any basis for this concern in relation to Victoria? This paper will outline the role of the Department of Minerals and Energy and the main features of legislative provisions affecting exploration effort. The practical difficulties that confront the Department and explorers alike will be examined. The importance of industry representation to influence the direction that policy and legislative review might take, will be highlighted. Above all, the paper will establish that one essential duty of government is to ensure the provision of appropriate mining titles and security of tenure.

The electrolytic zinc plant of today is foreshadowed in the patents issued to Léon Létrange of Paris in 1881 and 1883l. He proposed roasting zinc blende to make the zinc soluble in water or sulphuric acid, thus obtaining a sulphate solution. His purification was apparently that used in the lithopone work of the day. For electrolyzing he proposed anodes of carbon or lead, for cathodes zinc, copper or brass. Numerous patents by other workers were taken out in the first 10 years, most of which dealt with sulphate solutions. It is easy to presume that the formation of chlorine gas in zinc chloride electrolysis caused early emphasis on sulphate work. Lack of success with this invited further work with chloride solutions. Efficient and cheaper oxidizing agents for use in the chloride processes were more generally available. Carbon anodes could be used instead of lead anodes, which were blamed for much of the early electrolyzing troubles and remained in disfavor for many years. Carl Hoepfner received his first zinc patents in 18902. He was the most persistent of those who worked with chloride solutions and met with the largest measure of success. Hc built three plants, only one of which remained in operation. This was built in 1896 at the plant of Brunner, Mond & Co., Winnington, England, now part of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. It leached with by-product calcium chloride from the company's Solvay alkali plant and returned to it the chlorine formed in electrolyzing. The zinc plant had a capacity of 5 long tons of zinc, said to have been doubled later, and remained in operation until 1924. No commercial plant using chloride solutions has operated since then. E. A. Ashcroft experimented in the middle nineties with chloride, alkaline and sulphate solutions on materials from Broken Hill, Australia. He built a plant with a rated capacity of 10 long tons of zinc per day, at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, in 1898. This figure was never approached nor was cyclical operation achieved. The work in the plant appears to have been largely with sulphate solutions. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the impact of Building Information Modeling (BIM) on Just-In-Time (JIT) material delivery, with a focus on how the use of BIM can help improve efficient implementation of JIT and reduce the cost of material management. Previous research and a number of case studies have addressed the positive impact of BIM on construction at large but none focused on JIT in construction. This paper presents a methodology for selecting reliable material vendors. It also utilises the integration of BIM and scheduling software to generate quantities of material and its required delivery time to improve the flow process and improve its reliability to minimise related delays and productivity losses arising from idle and non-productive time of equipment and labour on jobsites. 4D visualization is utilized to support coordination and timing of JIT material deliveries in an effort to minimize congestion on job sites. Case studies on JIT material deliveries are presented and the impact of BIM implementation on reducing the cost of material management is evaluated. The joint effect of BIM and JIT on quality control, elimination of waste, reduction of inventory buffers, and on relationships with material vendors are evaluated by analysing and comparing data from case studies. The paper also presents a methodology based on multi-attribute decision criteria for modelling the selection criteria for material vendors. The model can assist in ranking vendors not only based on cost and quality but also on their reliability in delivering material on time.

"A coal burst occurred on 15 April, 2014 at the Austar Coal Mine, located west of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. The burst resulted in fatal injuries to two men working as part of the mining crew at the development face. At the time, a continuous miner was being used to mine a longwall development gate road through heavily structured coal, at a depth of approximately 550m. A number of pre-cursor bumps had occurred on previous shifts, emanating from the coal ribs of the roadway, in proximity to the coal face.This paper reviews the geological, geotechnical and mining conditions and circumstances leading up to the coal burst event; and presents and discusses the available evidence and possible interpretations relating to the geomechanical behaviour mechanisms that may have been critical factors in this incident. The paper also discusses some key technical and operational considerations of ground support systems and mining practices and strategies needed for operating in such conditions in the future.INTRODUCTIONAustar Coal Mine is an underground longwall coal mine located near Cessnock in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales (NSW), Australia and is the only underground mine still extracting the Greta Seam in this region. The mine was the first in Australia to adopt the Chinese-developed Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) method for thick seam extraction. Typically seam thickness ranges from 4m to 7m and depth of mining from 480m to 560m, with future mining planned down to depths of up to 700m, making it one of the deepest operating coal mines in Australia.On 15 April 2014, a pressure burst occurred in the left hand rib at the active mining face of B Heading, 2 to 3 cut-through, Maingate A9 panel, during development of the gateroads for the ninth longwall top coal caving panel. Strata in the general vicinity was affected by disturbed geology and multiple geological structures. Figure 1 shows a section of the mine plan as at October 2014 (six months after the accident), indicating the current longwall extraction panel (AS) and the development panel A9 where the accident occurred. (Note: Neither development nor longwall face positions changed significantly between the time of the accident and the date of this plan). At the time of the accident the current longwall face was in excess of 1,000m away from the Maingate A9 development panel face position."

The use of thc ultrasound technique for monitoring rockbolt support has at last provided support engineers with a measunng system capable of pinpointing fracture failuns in fully-grouted rockbolts. The measurement data are based on the operatmg characteristics of the bolt type, which are determined both under test-bench conditions (DIN 21521) as well as in underground trials. Practical experience acquired to date suggests that this new measuring system is both effective and reliable.
