Repairing and replacing equipment damaged by corrosion and abrasion is a major cost throughout industry, especially in the coal mining industry. Careful study of corrosion and abrasion, and their causes and effects, often leads to the selection of alternative materials which can provide economies. What, actually, are corrosion and abrasion and how do they contribute to the cost of operating a coal-preparation plant? Furthermore, what can be done to alleviate corrosion and abrasion problems and thereby reduce operating costs? These questions will be answered in the following discussion, which will describe the destructive action of corrosion and abrasion and give several methods for controlling corrosion and abrasion losses, These methods include the substitution of stainless steel for carbon steel, the use of corrosion inhibitors, and the use of design to eliminate corrosion and abrasion. Examples will be given illustrating the benefits that have resulted in plant tests when these methods of controlling corrosion and abrasion were used.

In 1988 a major exploration program was undertaken to determine the characteristics of the rock and soil for a 7.6 m diameter sea outfall tunnel beneath Boston Harbor out into Massachusetts Bay. The diffuser discharge location had been mandated by the EPA to a 10 sq. km area of seafloor connected to the proposed Deer Island Treatment Facility by a 14.5 km tunnel corridor. Geophysical surveys, deep rock borings, and laboratory testing, provided the information for the conceptual design. The program identified the range in material types and parameters to prove feasibility of a TBM driven tunnel and to locate the optimum alignment and depth.

The old mine workings on four barite-fluorite veins of the Lake Ainslie district, Nova Scotia, were opened recently and channel sampled. The samples were then forwarded to the Ore Dressing Laboratories, Bureau of Mines, Ottawa, for chemical analyses. Following the analyses, the sample rejects were combined to form bulk samples, representing ore from each vein, for small-scale batch test work. Tonnage samples from the veins, for pilot mill testing, were submitted when requested by the Bureau. The results of the analyses on the channel samples showed that there are two grades of ore in the di strict, represented, for test purposes, by the Trout River vein and Johnson vein ores. Small-scale and pilot-plant test work was undertaken on both these ores. The Trout River ore is amenable co concentration but, because of the high-barite-co-fluorite-co-calcite ratio, a fluorite concentrate was not obtainable from the Johnson vein ore as received. However, Johnson ore blended in a 1 :1 ratio with Trout River ore gave a mill feed that was readily concentrated. The test work on these ores showed that the following concentrates are obtainable : (a) A barite concentrate, with a recovery of 85 to 95 per cent of the available barite, analysing 93 co 96 per cent BaS04, 4 co 6 per cent CaF,, and 0.5 co 2 per cent CaCO3. (b) A fluorite concentrate, with a recovery of 80 co 85 per cent of the available fluorite, analysing 94 to 97 per cent CaF, , 1 to 3 per cent BaSO., and 1 to 3 per cent CaCO3

To obtain a negative determination for prime farmlands in its approved lignite surface mine permit application, Phillips Coal Co. conducted a soils mapping effort and a historic land use survey. In addressing the justification for topsoil substitute materials, the company relied on results of a geochemical evaluation to demonstrate improved drainage, trafficability, and fertility. It also relied on results of field test plots. Post-mining land use was determined through the use of overlay maps considering existing land use, vegetation, and historic prime farmland. The reclamation plan incorporated these elements plus indicator species, existing vegetation, and wildlife needs.

When most people think of coal mining, they envision men in soot-covered clothes and hard hats digging at deposits in deep underground caverns. These mental images commonly include coal cars rumbling on rails as they emerge from the earth, filled to the brim with rocky ore. The world of modern, longwall coal mining is a far different place. Yes, it?s underground, the miners still wear hard hats and the environment is filled with soot. However, today?s mining operations are carefully monitored and the entire process is highly automated. Five kilometers (3 miles) underground, a sophisticated, high-powered mining machine moves steadily through a 2-m (6-ft) high tunnel at an average speed of 3.2 km/h (2 mph), carving out coal, then conveying it to a crusher and carrying it to the surface. Instead of digging out the ore, a longwall mining system slices it from the exposed tunnel face, using giant rotating shears. The shorn coal tumbles onto a conveyer below the shears and is conveyed to the stageloader, where it is crushed and dumped onto the main conveyer belt that eventually hauls it out of the mine. Integral to the longwall shear and conveyor is a moving metal roof that protects it from the thousand plus feet of ground above. The ceiling panels automatically advance above the shears, powered by hydraulic roof supports that stand on the other side of the tunnel, moving in a slow, sideways lock-step with the shears. This complex and massive machine makes longwall mining the most ef?cient and productive method for excavating coal. In fact, it produces 2.7 kt to 22.6 kt (3,000 to 25,000 st) of ore per shift, versus 544 to 907 st (600 to 1,000 st) for the conventional room-and-pillar mining. Using that method, miners develop one section of a mine at a time after carving out load-bearing columns of coal to support the roof above their heads. Longwall mining also is considered safer than the room-and-pillar method, largely because the process is mostly automated, requiring fewer workers. Still, longwall mining has its drawbacks: The equipment is expensive and the mining conditions are harsh. An entire longwall system can cost between $50 million and $100 million, while the electrical controls used to operate it can cost an additional $1 million to $2 million. These investments grind away all day, every day, in hot tunnels filled with coal dust.

Particles are by far the easiest objects to simulate, because their dynamics is simple. Determining the motion of particles and their interaction, a wide variety of deformable structures can be constructed by connecting particles that have mass, position, and velocity, and that respond to forces. Starting from this simple idea we have derived what we call the particle-lattice method for the solutions of boundary value problems of deformation and fracture of solid mass. The problem of rock breaking by blasting operations as well as fracture and flow of rocks fragments involve momentum transfer between solid and fluid; gas flow and reactive mass transfer. In this paper we outline the method and describe briefly the salient features of the algorithm. We derive relationships between the contact properties for the discrete model and the properties of the underlying continuum and fluid flow coupling procedure. Finally we illustrate the potential of the method by means of example solutions related to the dynamic fracture and flow in jointed rock by blasting.

The kinetics of oxychlorination of MgO by Cl2+O2 was studied in the temperature range of 850 °C - 1025 °C, using thermogravimetric analysis. The effects of C12/02 ratio, gas velocity, temperature and partial pressure of reactive gases on the reaction rate were investigated. The oxychlorination process was characterized by an apparent activation energy of about 214 kJ/mol. The reaction orders with respect to C12+O2. C12 and O2 at 950 °C were about 0.65.0.98, and -0.37, respectively. Some data about oxychlorination kinetics of MgO, Cr2O3, and MgCr2O4 contained in chromite were compared. Efficiency of using oxychlorination for the removal of iron oxides contained in magnesia was demonstrated.

SCOTT, London, England (communication to the Secretary*).-I am acquainted with the manganese-ore deposits of Russia, India and Brazil, and agree generally with the statements contained in the paper regarding those deposits. The information given by Mr. Harder regarding the Chilean deposits is very welcome. When examining the Caucasian deposits, I endeavored to determine the quantity of ore originally contained in the deposit, and by deduction, the amount remaining for extraction. These calculations were rendered possible by the great extent of the outcrop and the extensive work that had been carried on in the deposit. A patent issued to J.N.J. Leeman (1957) described the change in performance that takes place when a cyclone is installed in the horizontal position rather than the vertical position. Although this patent was directed more toward improvements that could be realized in the heavy medium cleaning of coal, it contained specific references to reducing the quantity of fine solids that would report in the underflow, and an example for fine sand classification is also included. The three cyclone installations for which data is given in this paper demonstrate that horizontal mounting of large cyclones can improve classification efficiency, eliminate some operational difficulties, and reduce cyclone maintenance requirements in closed circuit grinding installations. Cyclone Experience at Serrana S.A. Each of four grinding circuits at the Serrana S.A. de Mineracao Apatite flotation plant in Brazil have a 2.7 X 4.6 meter (9 X 15 foot) rod mill and each originally operated in closed circuit with two vertically mounted Model D20B (500m nominal diameter) Krebs Cyclones. New feed size is 25mm. The Apatite is liberated at a relatively coarse 35 to 28 mesh grind, but the 500mm cyclones had to be fed at 66 pct. solids in order to obtain an overflow analyzing 12 pct. coarser than 42 mesh. Because dilution water in the cyclone feed had to be limited, classification was inefficient, and there were other significant circuit difficulties as summarized in a recent article by C. A. Busnardo (1984):

In nature, mercury is quite commonly found in association with antimony ores. This can be as a separate mineral such as cinnabar or in direct association with the antimony ore. The most common antimony-mercury mineral is livingstonite that occurs in places such as Algeria, Mexico, USSR and China. In the Roznava deposit in eastern Slovakia, tetrahedrite ore containing mercury ore has historically been processed pyrometallurgically for its silver and copper values. As well, in Tajikistan, major antimony deposits there contain significant mercury ore concentrations within the stibnite ore body. The mercury contained in these materials poses both a processing and environmental challenge. This paper will outline the processing of these types materials by industrial alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgical methods. The economics relevant to this potential application at Roznava in Slovakia will be outlined.

WILLIAM GRIFFITH, Scranton, Pa.-I notice in the discussions and literature that emphasis is placed on rock dust, shale dust, and limestone dust, and I infer that these different. sorts of rock are ground up to produce this dust. -Is that right? MR. RICE.-That is correct, but we do not have to grind the limestone dust we are using in the experimental mine, as that is obtained from a quarry, and is used just as it comes; we can get it very cheaply, as it is a by-product of the quarries. MR. GRIFFITH.-Have any experiments been made with ordinary dirt out of the fields; could not that be used as ground dust? MR. RICE.-If you dry it and powder it enough so it will float in a, strong air current it might be all right for the barriers, but if it is damp there will be a tendency for it to mat together; then it would be quite useless for making a dust cloud. There might also be another disadvantage if used through the whole mine, if it had very much free silica in it, which is bad for the lungs. Limestone and selected shale dust would not affect the health of miners. MR. GRIFFITH.-In order to do very much good with any of those barriers, they ought to be rather extensively used throughout the mines, and there are few mines that have facilities for grinding up this rock into such a fine dust. If the ordinary earth from a plowed field could be used, even if it were not quite so good, it is more accessible and very much cheaper; therefore, in using it, with the universality of the supply through-out the country, it would tend to stop explosions. MR. RICE (communication to the Secretary*).-In closing, it is well to again emphasize that I do not advocate barriers being a "cure-all" for explosions. It will be generally agreed that prevention is best, not only by means of improved methods of using explosives, and ventilation to prevent accumulations of firedamp, but also by either thoroughly wetting the dust throughout the mine, or else so treating it with rock dust or other inert dust that an explosion cannot start. From my observations I believe that rock dusting. is a practicable method, and has the merit of visibility, and remaining effective for considerable periods, whereas the watering method has to be daily followed up, and if neglected for a short period the mine may become in a dangerous condition. "The aim of the present paper is to use the two CFD codes to model the two phase flow in a water model ladle with central gas injection. The codes examined are CFX and Phoenics. An Eulerian two phase model is used and predictions are compared against the experimental data available. The results show that the codes can reasonably well predict the gas-liquid plume in the ladle, and predictions are generally in a good agreement with experimental data. However, differences do exist in predicting the gas volume fraction and velocity profiles. The results should be interpreted most carefully and cautiously, because they are very sensitive to the boundary conditions and dependent on the models for the physical phenomena involved. IntroductionSubmerged gas injection has widely been used in the metallurgical industry for more than a century. At the present, the use of gas is most effective in steelmaking industry where the advantages of the gas injection have already been long well understood. Effective mixing, large contact area between reactants, easy modifications and flexibility of the processes are the most important advantages. Disadvantages include refractory wear, blocking in the tuyeres, and splashing. These disadvantages can be reduced and advantages further improved by studying the flow phenomenon in process vessels. However, it is difficult to study flow in a real vessel because of the high temperatures and physical and mathematical modelling is therefore increasingly used in the process development work."

ThE following chronology presents the history of lead-mining in the United States in a brief form and is a useful reference in connection with the statistics of production: 1621.. Lead was mined and smelted near Falling Creek, Va., to supply the local demand for bullets and shot. This was the first mining and .smelting of lead in what is now the United States. 1632. In a report made on the minerals of New England, lead-ore is mentioned. (Bishop, I., 470.) 1650. Supposed beginning of mining by Jesuits in Pima county, Ariz. 1651. Grant of lead-mine at Middletown, Conn., to Gov. John Winthrop. 1682. Lead-ore supposed to have been discovered in Wisconsin by Nicholas Perrot. (K. D. Irving, Mineral Resources of Wisconsin, Trans., viii., 498.) 1700 Discovery of lead in Missouri by Penicaut, one of Le Sueur's party. Tile same expedition discovered lead near the southern boundary of Wisconsin in August of the same year. 1712. MANY are the salts produced. by Nature in various regions and parts of the world, as Pliny shows in his History. Likewise, many are the differences among things that are salty and from which salt can be extracted, as, for instance, all the lyes from any kind of ashes and the urine of all animals. But because these are not things that give men the useful elements necessary to life, I shall omit speaking of them in detail with the exception of some of the more notable ones, and I shall tell you that I find that men proceed in only two ways in order to have a sufficiency for their needs. One is that of extracting it from the salty waters of the sea itself, or from springs, with a certain technique [34v] adapted to the places, either by congealing or by evaporation; and the other is that of mining it from the earth. The latter salt is clear and beautiful, and it is mined from mountains, already made by Nature in the form of stone without the aid of art. All these salts have more or less efficacy* according to the fineness or coarseness of their earthy elemental mixture, and according to the provinces and places where they are found generated. Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific and South America (MMPT) has been working with operations around the world to increase their efficiency through æMine-to-MillÆ or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) projects. These projects have delivered significant improvements in mine efficiency, mill throughput and reduced operating costs at mines around the world. The MMPT methodology involves rock characterisation, site auditing, data collection, modelling/simulation and implementation of integrated operating and control strategies on site. This results in significant benefits to the operations û for example, 5 to 20 per cent increases in concentrator throughput have been measured. MMPTÆs rock characterisation utilises simple and inexpensive measurements that can be performed by trained site personnel. The advantage of these measurements is that a large amount of data can be collected in a very short timeframe, as the samples do not require shipping to an outside laboratory. Typically, a PIO project starts with a site visit to perform blasting and process audits, collect high quality data including measurements of run-of-mine fragmentation and survey data around all crushing and grinding circuits. These measurements are combined with rock characterisation and the definition of strength and structure domains to model the complete production chain. Site-specific models of the blast fragmentation, crushing, grinding and flotation processes can then be developed. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG or conventional grinding circuits. Process improvements can be higher mining productivity, higher mill throughput, decreased overall operating costs and higher flotation or leach recovery. This paper discusses a recent application of PIO conducted at a large open pit operation in South America and emphasises the potential that every operation has to ædo more with what they haveÆ.

The Sand Queen gold mine is a typical Archaean narrow, high-grade gold quartz lode deposit within a shear hosted system. Initial mining during 1904 - 1948 produced 181 659 ounces of gold from 248 564 tonnes of ore milled at an average production grade of 22.7 g/t Au, which equates to a minimum of 750 ounces per vertical metre. The current mining operation is using the old Sand Queen main shaft to access the Sand George deposit, which is a narrow quartz lode system discovered in the same shear structure along strike to the south of the Sand Queen mine workings. Current underground resources contain 360 200 tonnes at a grade of 11.8 g/t Au for 136 500 ounces. Mining is scheduled to produce 20 000 ounces of gold annually. Re-opening of the Sand Queen mine and underground development of the Sand George lodes has revived several grade control issues relevant to a narrow, ænuggettyÆ gold lode mining environment. These include the dependence of assay grade of individual samples upon a number of factors, including how and where a sample is collected, how and where it is analysed, and how grade data is used to estimate an æaverageÆ grade. Ideally, the only way to achieve an acceptable estimate of ætrue gradeÆ is to mine and mill a large parcel of ore (eg >100 tonnes) from each lode or ore type. In a mining operation producing relatively small tonnages from a number of separate ænuggettyÆ gold lodes, availability of resources and operational constraints may preclude intensive sampling for predictive grade control. At the Sand Queen mine, one of the key issues has been to establish a reliable system for estimation of gold grade with which to reconcile milling data. Extensive use has been made of detailed geological data to understand the grade distribution within individual lodes and between lodes, so as not to rely solely on assay results.

In the use of the apparatus purchased for the new chemical laboratories of the university, no piece has given us more satisfaction, or has been a greater success, than a new still which is the subject of this paper. In the designing of this still I had two definite objects in view ; one, the utilizing of steam from the large 60 horse-power boiler used in heating the building, and the other, a provision for making distilled water with gas, when steam from the heating-plant was not available. The still is encased in wrought-iron, with a lining of asbestos, and is provided with a float which automatically regulates the flow of water from the supply-pipe. It was made for me by G. J. M?rrle, Pforzheim, Germany, and was imported by Messrs. Eimer & Amend, of New York City. It is a beautiful piece of apparatus, and the workmanship is excellent in every detail. The essential parts of this apparatus will be understood by consulting the accompanying figures, but a few words of explanation may be appropriate. A study has been made of the effect of unidirectional solidification on the creep behavior, stress-rupture properties, and thermal shock resistance of four nickel-base superalloys. The alloys Mar-MZOO, B-1900, IN 100, and TRW 1900 show improved rupture ductility and thermal shock resistance when tested with the columnar grains parallel to the major stress axis during test. The relative improvement in creep-rupture properties depends on the intrinsic strength of the alloy, a property which depends on composition, heat-treatnient, and crystallographic orientation. The data clarifies some of the factors affecting the properlies of the cast nickel-base superalloy. COMPONENTS designed for high-temperature use have, in recent years, been fabricated by precision casting techniques using nickel-base alloys developed specifically for use in the conventionally cast condition. This development was a result of both the increasing complexity of the component and the recognition that high-temperature strength was incompatible with workability. The use of castings can be economically favorable, but, more important, the recent complex designs of air-cooled gas turbine blades and vanes in alloys which possess the necessary high-temperature strength cannot be forged. Common modes of failure of high-temperature components are excessive creep, creep rupture, and thermal fatigue. If rupture occurs then the mechanism is usually by inter crystalline cracking along those grain boundaries oriented transverse to the major stress axis. In the stronger alloys, rapid propagation of intercrystalline cracks result in apparent premature failure demonstrated by the absence of third stage creep in a creep-rupture test and low rupture ductility. Tensile ductility shows a similar trend, that is, decreasing ductility with increase in strength. It is not surprising, therefore, that increases in creep strength have only been obtained with a loss in resistance to thermal shock, a property which shows a dependence on tensile ductility. VerSnyder and ~uard' showed that the application of unidirectional solidification to a brittle Ni-Cr-A1 alloy both improved the rupture life of the alloy and increased rupture ductility. Since this casting method results in columnar grains, it appeared that the solution to the lack of ductility in nickel-base alloy components was the elimination of the source of failure, namely the transverse grain boundaries. This concept was recently developed2 to produce cast-to-size gas-turbine blades and vanes consisting entirely of columnar grains oriented parallel to the major stress axis of the component. Not only did the process impart increased rupture life and ductility to the components, but it also increased their resistance to thermal shock. During this development, the effect of unidirectional solidification on the properties of several alloys was investigated. The resulting data allows certain conclusions to be drawn regarding the factors affecting the creep and stress-rupture properties of the cast nickel-base superalloy and also its resistance to thermal shock. Detailed information was obtained on the alloys Mar-MZOO, B-1900, In 100, and TRW 1900. The composition of the alloys studied are shown in Table I. MATERIAL PREPARATION AND TESTING The conventionally cast alloys are cast as +-in.-diam bars in innoculated shell molds under conditions designed to maintain control of grain size. Unidirec-tionally solidified casting were produced in the form of 3-in.-diam ingots. Specimens from the latter were machined such that the axes of the columnar grains were parallel with the axis of the test bar, except in certain cases where the transverse properties of the material were being evaluated. The specimens were tested in an axial loading creep machine.' Temperatures were measured with thermocouples, attached just outside each end of the gage length, to assure uniform temperature along the entire specimen. Chromel/alumel thermocouples were used up to 1800"F and Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples above 1800"F. The specimen temperature was recorded and maintained within i2"F throughout the test. Creep extensions were measured automatically with extenso-meters attached to ridges on the specimen and recorded continuously using linear variable differential transformers and multipoint recording equipment. MICROSTRUCTURE The microstructures of transverse sections of the four alloys studied are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 shows optical micrographs of the alloys, both in the conventionally cast and unidirectionally solidified conditions. Each alloy displays a cored dendritic structure, a distribution of MC carbide, and the presence of the y — y' eutectic constituent.~ In the case of IN 100 and B-1900, Fig. 1 indicates that in these specimens the eutectic is degenerate. That is, it consists only of y' pools indicating that the y constituent has been solutioned during the cooling period after solidification. The major effect of unidirectional solidification on the microstructures of the alloys is a tendency to promote a more dendritic form of MC carbide and an increase in dendrite arm spacing, both effects being a result of the slower solidification rate in the unidirectional solidification technique. The paper presents two methods for periodical identification of the dependence between haulage speed and loading torque of the shearer for periodical corrections of control algorithms. These algorithms are useful for working with small microprocessor-based systems. The paper is concluded with results of identification using above methodsand with discussion about their merits and demerits. The longwall mining system is the basic exploita-tion system used in coal mining in Poland. The quantity of coal produced by this system, using a shearer loader as a cutter-loader machine is esti-mated at 170 million tones per year. For this rea-son scientific research concerning these machines is of major practical significance.

The liquor from potroom wet scrubbers is treated with lime to precipitate the soluble fluorides. The solids after filtration, referred to as scrubber mud, contain in addition to calcium fluoride, alumina, carbon, tars including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), cryolite and pachnolite and are considered hazardous. This communication deals with the pilot plant scale calcination of scrubber mud with a rotary kiln to obtain non-hazardous fluoride raw materials. Air classification was performed to separate the mudinto aluminarich andcalcium fluoride rich fractions which were then calcined. With proper control of calcination parameters and addition of lime, the carbon and tars were destroyed and hydrogen fluoride emissions were controlled. The calcined products could be used in the steel indusny as a fluxing agent or as a substitute for fluorspar in the production of aluminum fluoride.
