A cooperative study was conducted with Emerald Coal Resources, L.P., an affiliate of Foundation Coal Corporation, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to evaluate the effectiveness of (partially) pre-driven longwall recovery rooms supported with pumpable roof supports. This paper evaluates the load transfer mechanics associated with the advancement of the longwall face into the pre-driven recovery room and the widening of the room to recover the longwall shields. The results show that the yielding of the panel fender produced uncontrollable convergence that caused yielding of the shields and stiff pumpable roof supports when the face was approximately 10 ft from the recovery room. The shields continued to yield until the face advanced into the recovery room. Convergence in the pre-driven recovery room typically reached 6-8 in once the pumpable supports yielded and shed load through a declining residual load capacity prior to being cut out by the longwall shearer. Roof deformations occurred beyond the 32-ft horizon with total deformation ranging from 2 to 4 in, indicating that standing support was necessary to help control the span as the longwall face advanced into the pre-driven recovery room. Stability improved as the pumpable supports were cut out, thereby reducing the span between the shields and the outby pillars. In the end, the shields were successfully recovered under stable ground conditions. However, a disconcerting discovery was the load shedding of the outby pillars as the recovery room was mined into. It is postulated that this may be due to the progression of the rear “abutment” moving toward the recovery room as the panel fender and standing support in the recovery room yield and shed load. This behavior was not expected with a relatively narrow room that is fully supported with standing support. If this mechanism is indeed occurring, the width of the room and performance of the standing support becomes even more critical. Premature failure of the support can lead to excessive convergence on the shield line that cannot be controlled even with modern shields, resulting in roof instabilities that can lead to catastrophic results.

In recent years stricter requirements imposed variously by the Companies Acts, auditors and the Stock Exchanges have resulted in annual financial statements of mining companies becoming more detailed, informative and useful. Standards of reporting on ore reserves have not kept pace with the improvements in financial information disclosure, despite the fact that ore reserves are usually the most important asset of a mining company. The ore reserve reporting practices of fifteen leading Australian mining companies are analysed against important specific criteria. In terms of detailed and meaningful disclosure, there is scope for major improve- ments in annual ore reserve reporting Practices.

Carbonaceous material (CM) from ores of varying preg-robbing activity from Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI), Nevada, was characterized in terms of its functional group content, hydrocarbon content, elemental composition, and humic acid content. FT-IR analyses showed neither the presence of hydrocarbons nor of carboxylic, phenolic, or sulfhydrol functionalities. FT-IR bands present included C=C stretching in aromatic rings and C-O-C stretching, indicating presence of oxygen as ether linkages in the carbon matrix. Calculated atomic oxygen to carbon (O/C) ratios did not reveal a trend between maturity of CM and preg-robbing behavior, possibly due to low resolution of electron microprobe analysis. However, the atomic O/C ratios agree with other chemical analysis, indicating that the organic carbon is very mature, similar to or higher in grade than anthracite coal.

The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Western Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential. It is recommended that further site specific studies should be performed on this area.

Small-scale mining operations are characterised by a large variety of equipment availability and a high level of operational flexibility. Mine planning is usually scarce or absent in small quarries in Brazil, and mine management generally focuses on daily operations. As a result, analysis of the effects of unit operations, such as blasting, over the whole mining process is often neglected. The goal of the following project was to study the effect of production blasting on loading and hauling times, secondary breaking times and primary crushing times at the Experimental Mine of the Research Center for Responsible Mining of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The operations analysed included blasts that performed:under the average operational standard, defined in this paper as Case 1according to quarry standards, defined in this paper as Case 2.In order to establish the effects of blasting on the downstream process, three key performance indictors were used:The time taken to load the truck, when there is the need for material selection. Due to the fact that we do not have an operational baseline, the increase in time cannot be established, meaning that we must content ourselves with comparing the mean time in each scenario.The average time used for secondary breaking machinery.The time required for the primary crusher to fully process the load of a single truck. The results obtained indicate correlations between the coarseness of the blasted material and these operational times. Extensive studies have been carried out on electric furnace and blast furnace slags obtained in the winning of iron from its ores. These slags normally consist of elements of the gangue minerals present in the ores, as well as the added flux materials. In consequence, melts of CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2 can be considered as representing typical slag compositions. When a slag of this composition cools, it usually crystallizes according to predictions possible from an equilibrium diagram of these constituents, providing the melt is not undercooled to form glass. The melt is either viscous or fluid, depending upon the ratio of binary cations to silica, and crystallizes easily or forms a glass for the same reasons. If the melt is not overheated so that carbides of the metal components of the slag are formed and if the composition of the slag is so adjusted that it has a high fluidity, liquid equilibrium is attained and the slag can be held in a liquid state for extended periods of time. Upon tapping, the slag crystallizes into minerals, the type and proportion of which are determined by the melt composition. Since equilibrium is attained, the holding period is not critical. In melts containing a large increment of titanium, however, the normal slag procedures are not applicable. Titanium, as one of the atomic transition elements, is, at elevated temperatures, capable of being reduced to form metalloid compounds much more readily than the refractory oxides present in normal slags. In consequence, an oxide melt containing titanium never reaches equilibrium in a reducing environment, but continues to shift its composition until cooled. If melts of this nature are cooled and samples submitted to metal-lographic and X ray analysis the course of reaction and crystallization in this type of slag can be determined. Preparation of Slag The slags investigated fell into the system CaO-MgO-TiO2-Al2O3-SiO2 and were produced from ilmenite ores reduced by carbon in an electric furnace. Since the equilibrium series1 and the laboratory smelting of ilmenite2 are described in two of the accompanying papers, detailed description of the smelting procedure is not required here. However, certain essentials must be mentioned. Two types of melts were used to produce slags studied in this investigation. The first series of smelts made to determine proper flux addition were produced in a 4 lb Ajax induction furnace. The charge, consisting of ore with the proper flux addition, was heated in a graphite crucible until fluid, held fluid for a sufficient time period to obtain 1-5 pct FeO content, and poured. Because of the small size of the charge only the final sample of these melts could be examined. In the melts made in the 50 lb arc furnace, however, grab samples taken at 10 min. intervals between time of initial melting and final pouring were available for examination. These samples allowed a much clearer picture of the course of reaction and crystallization. amounts of ferrous oxide and reduced titanium compounds is opaque to transmitted light. Therefore, all petro-graphic studies had to be made on polished slag sections. A representative sample of slag was cut or broken, mounted in a thermosetting plastic, ground flat using 400 grit silicon carbide, the coarse scratches removed with 600 grit silicon carbide and polished on billiard cloth using levigated alumina. Rouge was avoided because of the entrainment of the red particles in pores in the slag, causing a possible confusion with some of the mineral phases. In order to prevent sample projection above the plastic surface red bakelite was used to hold the sample, and backed up with clear lucite. In this manner sample labels could be permanently retained in the mounting. The polished samples were examined on a Bausch and Lomb metallograph at magnifications of 250 X, 500 X, 1000 X and 1800 X. The instrument was equipped for examination of specimens under bright field illumination and with crossed nicols. A magenta tint plate to aid in color tone differentiation was also used. Petrology of Slags In order to determine the composition and mineral relatinos of a previously unreported system petrologically, it is essential that the starting composition, reaction temperature and final composition be known. The chemical composition of the ilmenite ore used in these smelts is given in Table 1, and the complete analysis of a typical high titanium, low iron slag is given in Table 2. In the winning of TiO2 from ilmenite by a smelting process it is necessary to produce a slag which will melt at an economically feasible temperature, remain molten as the iron is removed by reduction, be fluid enough to be readily removed from the furnace, contain a high percentage of TiO2 and a low percentage of reduced titanium com-

This paper presents an analysis of surface subsidence characteristics in room and pillar mining using physical models and laser holographic interferometry (holometry). The analysis included the effect of various geometric parameters and different overburden materials (sand and gelatin) and resulted in the formulation of a more realistic model material for laboratory simulation of typical geologic overburden. Previous work using this technique involved the use of sand to model over- burden and detailed results are presented elsewhere (1). The main emphasis of this work was to develop a gelatin based mixture which would provide a better model. Initial work during the development of this model included testing various ingredients and monitoring the time dependent characteristics of the model, such as the surface penetration resistance. This value indicated changing deformability/ridgidity of the model with time. Once several models had been developed, holometry techniques were applied. Initial tests showed that the stiffness of gelatin created a bridging effect over the mine models, thus restricting deformation. At this point, a 0.5 inch (1.27 cm.) layer of sand was placed directly over the mine model with the gelatin mixture on top. The approach was to model different zones of overburden movement that exist as an extraction occurs (2). The sand would represent the caved and fractured zones which occur above the excavated area. The gelatin models the continuously deformed zone which occurs between the fractured zone and the surface. Holometry techniques applied to this model yielded successful results.

The authors describe novel aspects of ground reinforcement and treatment as related to soft ground excavation for tunnels throughout the world. Insitu reinforcement for cut slopes (soil nailing), as underpinning (reticulated micropiles), and as direct tunnel support (infilaggi) is introduced. Ground treatment focuses on new aspects of permeation grouting (by the tube'a manchette system), and on jet grouting-a very powerful and positive new technique. Recent developments in equipment, materials, methods and instrumentation are reviewed, with special reference to major tunnelling projects in Italy and Singapore.

The Kucing Liar skarn deposit is located in the Ertsberg mining district, which also contains other skarn deposits and the Grasberg porphyry copper û gold deposit. The Ertsberg district is located in the province of Irian Jaya, IndonesiaÆs easternmost province. Mining development began in the Ertsberg district in 1972 with the mining of the Ertsberg deposit. Daily production in the district now averages about 230 000 tonnes of ore, with the bulk of the ore coming from the Grasberg open pit and the balance from underground mining of skarn deposits. During 1998, 45 218 additional metres of drilling were conducted to delineate and understand the Kucing Liar orebody. The deposit was first intersected in drill holes in 1994 and then was intersected in underground workings located about 1000 metres from the discovery drill hole in 1995. Initially, the two intersections were thought to be different orebodies but are now realised to be different parts of the same orebody. The Kucing Liar deposit consists of magnetite û copper û gold replacement and skarn mineralisation in favorable Tertiary and Cretaceous units. The deposit is approximately 2000 metres in length and averages about 200 to 250 metres in thickness. The width varies from 400 to 600 metres. Drilling in 1998 was directed towards delineating the deposit on its NW and SE ends and to determine its down dip extension. Reserves for the deposit at the end of 1998 stand at 320 million tonnes at 1.4 per cent copper, 1.4 g/t gold, and 5.3 g/t silver. Many important questions remain to be answered concerning the relationship of the Kucing Liar orebody to the major faults in the district and to the Grasberg intrusive complex which contains the Grasberg orebody. Continued exciting developments are anticipated as work to understand the deposit by drilling and geologic study continues.

"The Pine Point area is on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, 510 air miles north of Edmonton and J JO miles south of Yellowknife, N.W.T. The occurrence there of lead and zinc was reported in J 899 by R. Bell (5) of the Geological Survey of Canada, and in the following years several claims were staked and some prospecting was done. In 1928 Atlas Exploration Co. took over the property containing the discovery occurrences. In 1929 The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (""Cominco"") and Ventures Ltd. participated with Atlas in forming the Northern Lead-Zinc Co., which, under the direction of J. M. Bell, carried out 24,499 feet of drilling in the discovery and surrounding areas. Two shafts and many surface pits were also sunk. This work showed that the discovery deposits contain about 500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore, but no new orebody was found.In 1936 D. F. Kidd (11) drew attention to the highly significant space relations between the base-metal discoveries at Pine Point and the projections of certain major Precambrian faults mapped earlier by C. H. Stockwell. Geological work by Cominco in 1940 and subsequent years suggested the presence of mineable deposits within a belt of land including part of the area of earlier field work and extending far beyond it. Between 1946 and 1954 exploration financed by Cominco and Ventures Ltd. included 182,950 feet of diamond drilling, 383 feet of sinking, and 240 feet of drifting, raising, and crosscutting. This work was successful in finding substantial quantities of new ore in places where bedrock is completely concealed.The topography is one of low relief, characterized in many places by swampy muskeg and shallow, marl-bottomed ponds. The area where ore has been found is generally higher ground which, though not well drained, is comparatively dry. It is also marked by raised beaches and a few sand dunes overgrown by small spruce and pine. Bedrock is generally overlain by a variable thickness of hard, glacial boulder clay. This in turn is covered by silt, sand, and gravel, probably deposited from the waters of Great Slave Lake, which formerly extended many miles beyond its present southern shore."

In South Carolina and Georgia an area about 20 miles wide situated near the inner margin of the Coastal Plain and extending from the vicinity of Columbia, S.C. southwestward about 180 miles to the vicinity of Macon, Georgia is the principal kaolin-producing area of the world. It is especially important as the world's major source of clay used for paper coating. Essentially all of the land known or likely to be productive of quality kaolin in this area is now owned or controlled by producing companies. The least-fully developed portion is that in the vicinity of Wrens, Georgia which has been explored and developed since 1961. For the two decades following the end of world war II, demand for kaolin increased at approximately twice the rate for other industrial minerals. From 1945 to 1965 production increased four-fold. Since 1965 the rate of increase has been less, but the outlook now is that production and demand will double at least once again before the year 2000. A substantial part of this increased demand has come, and will continue to come, from industrial development, especially in the paper industry, outside the United States. The general effect, in addition to a continuing increase in production in the U.S., will be to cause: 1. Intensive research for development of more effective and more economical methods of beneficiation; 2. Concerted research effort to find an economical way of modifying high-viscosity kaolin so that it can be used for paper coating; 3. More active exploration in the U.S. and overseas, especially for deposits to supply the foreign markets; 4. More intensive study of the geological factors responsible for the accumulation of commercial deposits of kaolin; 5. Some modest rise in price, relative to the cost of other industrial minerals. The effect on kaolin producing region of Georgia and South Carolina will be to cause: 1. Working of progressively lower-grade deposits; 2. An increase in the acceptable thickness of overburden; 3. Mining of deposits farther down-dip, the use of which is now inhibited by large volumes of groundwater; 4. Increased threat of invasion of the kaolin in industry's market by substitute materials; 5. A substantial increase in concern over environmental factors; 6. More attention to be paid to the large opportunity offered for mining of silica sand and other co-products.

A geologist can be likened to a medical pathologist trying to figure out from faint clues how something had lived and how it died, often long after the event. Present-day seafloor hydrothermalism has empowered geologists/pathologists to dissect a living system, in this case volcanogenic massive sulfides (vms) deposits of copper, zinc, lead, silver and gold. On the other hand, a considerable amount of our understanding of seafloor hydrothermal processes and its products stem from our knowledge, much of it from industry, of these same processes and products that formed ancient ores in oceans as much as 2700 million years ago and are now mined on land.

The following presentation is more a summation of observations made and conclusions drawn over a period of three to four years than a report of experiments made with a definite objective. Tests were made, of course, to verify hypotheses, but the large mass of data was collected incidental to other work. Lack of space forbids the presentation of more than a few of those data. On the other hand, it is unfortunate that some of the most illustrative examples are not available. The work is admittedly incomplete but is presented in the hope that it will stimulate further work along a similar line. The answers to many of the questions left unanswered by this paper will be found only after long and painstaking study, such as is scarcely possible in a commercial laboratory where problems of immediate importance consume most of the time. It is also hoped that this study will in some measure throw light on some of the dark spots of steelmaking, and help to clarify some of the annoyingly vague references to "good practice." Only cast steel was studied and the conclusions apply to cast steel, but it is the authors' opinion that the quality of rolled or forged steel is largely dependent on the quality of the ingot, which is a casting. Although this discussion deals almost entirely with inclusions, it is important that the reader understand that only those natural inclusions which owe their origin to the solubility of certain materials in steel and to the chemical reactions of steelmaking are considered. Accidental inclusions, such as entrapped particles of slag, nozzle, runner, or mold arc outside its province and are not considered. Such accidental inclusions are always dangerous and should be carefully avoided. Relation between Ductility and Nonmetallic Inclusions In September, 1928, an acid electric furnace was put into operation at the Indiana Harbor plant of the American Steel Foundries. Following the usual practice, aluminum additions were made in order to obtain sound castings. Immediately the problem of low ductility arose. Previous to that time, only open-hearth steel was produced, and, aluminum being used rarely in that steel, there had been practically no trouble with low ductility in the lower carbon range.

Excessive production of reactive oxygen radicals by alveolar macrophages is proposed to play an important role in oxidative lung injury. A major product of oxygen radical formation is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (•OH) generated via a biologic Fenton reaction. In addition to its known ability to induce lipid peroxidation, recent studies have suggested that the •OH may exert its cytotoxic effect through the alteration of [Ca2+], homeostasis. To test this potential mechanism as well as to investigate the relationship between •OH and Ca" overloading in cytotoxic injury, isolated rat alveolar macrophages were exposed to externally generated radical system, H2O2 (0.01 to 1 mM) and Fe (1 mM) and their [Ca2+] levels and cell injury were monitored using quantitative fluorescence microscopy with the aid of the specific Ca" indicator, Fura-2, and membrane integrity indicator, propidium iodide. Electron spin resonance measurements using the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) confirmed the production of the .OH radical by this system. Upon the addition of the radicals, the macrophages displayed a rapid initial rise in [Ca2+] which was followed by a slower but more pronounced [Ca2+], elevation that reached a level 3 to 5 times higher than the basal level. This process preceded cell death as evident by nuclear propidium iodide fluorescence. Depletion of extracellular Ca" inhibited both the [Ca2+], response and cell injury. Preincubation of the cells with the Ca" channel blocker verapamil or .0H radical scavenger mannitol similarly inhibited the [Ca2+], rise and loss of viability. Firefly luciferase assay of cellular ATP content demonstrated that the alterations in [Ca2+], following .0H treatment preceded the depletion of ATP. Changes in membrane potential caused by Na* substitution with K* had no significant effect on either the unstimulated or stimulated [Ca"], levels. Taken together, these measurements indicate that .OH-induced injury in alveolar macrophages is associated with the alteration in [Ca2+], homeostasis. The mechanism of •OH-induced [Ca2+] loading is not due to nonspecific membrane damage or energy depletion, but mainly due to an increase in Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ selective channels. This Ca2+ over-load state as well as energy depletion caused by the oxidant may activate certain cellular degradative processes leading to cell injury and death.

Recently developed clay deposits that will impact regional and world markets are described. These deposits, their location, geology, and physical properties are delineated. Kaolins from the State of Para in Brazil and from Ukraine; bentonites from Argentina and India; and palygorskite and sepiolite from China are world class deposits that when processed using modem technology will produce excellent products. Other deposits that may affect regional markets are l<aolins from China, Australia and Indonesia; bentonites from Georgia (formerly USSR) and China; and palygorskite from India and Ukraine. New ball clay deposits that will affect regional markets are in China and Indonesia.

JUST as I have told you that it is impossible to give an exact rule for the bell scale, so I say the same concerning the clappers. Yet, if one wishes the bell to sound well, it is necessary that it have a proportioned blow; for if it is struck with a clapper that is lighter than it should be, it will not give out all the sound that it contains, and if it is struck with a heavier one than it can support, it is forced and the sound is made crude and harsh, in addition to the danger of breaking the bell. Therefore-the clappers must be made so that they bear a certain proportion to the bell, and in order not to proceed by chance, I have diligently tried to find the method as well as possible. I have found that experienced masters [99] have given to bells weighing ten pounds a clapper of one and a half pounds [and, to larger ones, clappers as tabulated on the next page].* Larger numbers than these I have not found because, in truth, few of the extraordinarily large ones are made in our regions. In my opinion, the masters should not be limited to these rules for the differences in clappers but should proceed according to the kind of bell, using a certain discretion for it is not possible to give a definite rule.

Whilst a significant body of research has been carried into air overpressure levels that arise as a result of the use of explosives, few published studies have actually tried to relate the movement of a quarry face to the resulting air overpressure produced. The aim of this preliminary investigation was to monitor a number of quarry blasts at two different limestone quarries. The first using multiple separately initiated deck charges in a multi borehole blast, the second using single column charges in a multi borehole blast.
