"Among other components, ore body „T“ was discovered in the Bor pit copper mine at a depth of app. 500m. The ore body is relatively small: 60-65m long, 40-45m wide and up to 50m high, but with an extremely high content of copper and accompanying metals. The rock mass containing the ore body is composed of altered andesite of relatively poor physical-mechanical characteristics. The exploitation of this ore body by way of conventional mining methods was associated with high risk, cost, and potential losses of the rich ore. Due to everything specified hereinbefore, the adopted solution involved ore exploitation with complete ensuring of excavation stability, thus forming an extremely large underground opening. The excavation and supporting were performed according to the NATM principles along with applying shotcrete, 9-25 m long cables, and horizontal and vertical lattice girders. The excavation of the ore body was completed in app. 2.5 years, all the while ensuring complete stability and security of people and equipment; construction works were constantly monitored. The proposed solution for ore excavation enabled more than 95% exploitation of ore as requested by the Investor, while depletion due to waste-rock excavation was less than the allowed 5%. INTRODUCTIONThe Bor copper deposit is located in Eastern Serbia. Copper exploitation in Bor commenced as far back as 1902. A total of 26 ore bodies varying in size and valuable mineral content have been excavated so far. One of the most recent excavated ore bodies is ore body „T“, which is one of the smallest bodies by volume, but also a body with one of the largest content of copper and accompanying metals. An important fact regarding its exploitation is that it is located at a depth of app. 500 m; that its shape is irregular: 60-65 m long; 40-45 m wide and app. 50 m high; and that it lays within a rock mass of relatively poor physical-mechanical characteristics. In addition, above it, in its immediate vicinity, ore body „F“ was previously excavated and its room was refilled with backfill and water. Excavation methods common in mining practice (excavation with caving, excavation with backfilling, excavation with protective pillars) were inadequate in this case for various reasons:• The immediate vicinity of the previous ore body „F“ room could cause expansion of the caving zone also to that room, along with penetration of groundwater and flotation sludge;• Possibility of deformation expansion caused by caving as far up as the surface of the terrain, including the urban area;• Difficulties in maintaining the stability of excavation sidewalls having steep slopes and great height;• Significant loss of ore mass with a relatively high content of metals etc."

Discussion of the paper of F. M. Simonds and E. Z. Burns, presented at the New York Meeting, February, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 75, March, 1913, pp. 369 to 402. W. L. SAUNDERS, New York,. N. Y.:-Mr. Burns in his native Colorado modesty has said that he apologizes for things left out of this paper. I am much impressed by what he has put into the paper, as of all the papers that I have read on the subject, describing, as it does, a specific piece of work that has been accomplished, I do not recall one that gives so much information in such a practical way. Mr. Burns has also said that it is very hard to get men to put things down while the work is being driven. My experience is that it is very much harder to get the men in charge of work of this kind to bring them in in the form of a report before a body of engineers after the work is done. We have a great many cases where records are kept in much detail, but they are usually kept under cover, with the mistaken idea that the information gained is private information for the benefit of those who have done the work. Messrs. Simonds and Burns have opened up this case so that we can get the benefit of that experience which they have had, and so that we can learn something for the future. The description contained in this paper, as I have said, is a very practical one. You will notice in going through it. that the authors have given in detail a record of their work from the beginning to the end, and they even go so far as to publish an exact copy of the Rawley Mining Co.'s daily report. That daily report is something which those of us who are engaged in similar work might copy to great advantage, and having it before us we can check up our men while doing work and exact from them equal conditions, if it is possible to do so.

In nzost cases, the driving force for a lattice transformation is produced by supercooling below the equilibriunz transformation temperature. The interfnce reaction in isothermally annealed, multiphase diffusion couples may involve a luttice transformation which also requires a driving force. Direct experinzental evidence has been obtained for the existence of the driring force in the form of a supersaturated phase at the aocc)-0@cc) interface in Cu:Cu-12.5 ult pct A1 couples; the super saturation is equivalent to an excess free energy of approximately 3 cal per mol at 905. A tentatiue interpretation of the dynanzic situation a1 the interface based on the free energy-composition diagram is proposed. THE presently accepted theory of diffusion in multiphase couples1 states that there will be a phase layer in the diffusion zone for every region which has three degrees of freedom and which is crossed by the diffusion path in the equilibrium phase diagram. For binary systems, this restriction excludes all but single-phase fields and, for ternary systems, only one- and two-phase fields are included. In addition, Rhines"~ as well as other investigators3 6 have reported that the compositions of the various phases adjacent to the interfaces are, for all practical purposes, the compositions given by the intersections of the diffusion path with the solubility limits of the single-phase fields of the equilibrium phase diagram. Some studies of the rate of thickening of these intermediate diffusion layers indicate that the thickness of the layer changes para-bolically with time, or: where x is the position of the interface relative to an origin xo, t is the diffusion time, and k is a temperature-dependent factor. crank7 shows mathematically that, if the compositions at an interface are independent of time and the motion of the interface is controlled by the diffusion of the elements to and from the interface, then the segments of the concentration penetration curve for a semi-infinite step-function couple will be described by an equation of the form: hence, Eq. [l] follows from Eq. (21 if the interface compositions are fixed and if the motion of the interface is diffusion-controlled. Although the concept of local equilibrium being attained at interfaces has assumed a prominent role in the theory of diffusion in multiphase couples, experimental evidence and theoretical discussions which challenge the general validity of this concept have been reported in the literature. arkeen' has stated that strict obedience to the conditions set by the equilibrium phase diagram cannot be expected in any system in which diffusion is occurring because diffusion takes place only in the presence of an activity gradient. Darken also noted that it is usually assumed that equilibrium is attained locally at the interface although the system as a whole is not at equilibrium, the implication being that the transformation at the interface is rapid in comparison with the rate of supply of the elements by diffusion. ISirkaldy3 indicates agreement with Darken in that he believes the concept of local equilibrium is at best an approximation because the motion of the phase boundary requires that there be a free-energy difference and, hence, a departure from the equilibrium composition at the interface. Seebold and Birks9 have stated that diffusion couples cannot be in true equilibrium, but the results obtained are often in good agreement with the phase diagram. The initial deviation from equilibrium in a diffusion couple will be quite large because alloys of significantly different compositions are usually joined together. Kirkaldy feels that the transition time for the attainment of constant interface compositions (essentially the equilibrium values) will be small, although in some cases finite. Castleman and sieglelo observed such transition times in multiphase A1-Ni couples, but at low annealing temperatures these times were quite long. Similarly, ~asing" found departures, which persisted for more than 20 hr, at phase interfaces in Au-Ni and Fe-Mo diffusion couples. Braun and Powell's12 measurements of the solubility limits of the intermediate phases in the Au-In system as determined by microprobe analysis of diffusion couples do not agree with the limits reported by Hiscocks and Hume-Rothery13 who used equilibrated samples. Finally, Borovskii and ~archukova'~ have stated that the determination of the solubility limits of phase diagrams using high-resolution micro-analyzer measurements at the interfaces of multiphase couples is not an accurate technique because of deviations from the equilibrium compositions at a moving interface; diffusion couples may be used to map out the phase boundaries in the equilibrium diagram, but the final determination of the solubility iimits should be made with equilibrated samples. The purpose of this work was to investigate the conditions prevailing at an interface in a multiphase diffusion couple and to compare the interface compositions with those associated with true thermodynamic equilibrium between the two phases. Microanalyzer techniques were used to measure interface compositions in two-phase Cu-A1 diffusion couples annealed at 80@, 905", and 1000°C for various times.

El presente texto describe el proceso de remolienda efectuado en el circuito de flotación de bulk en la concentradora Casapalca. Dicho estudio se basa en dos proyectos anteriores, donde se buscó mejorar la molienda inicial con la instalación de un molino de bolas Marcy - 64-1/2 y el uso cuatro ciclones tipo Krebs de lú11 (3 en trabajo permanente y uno de repuesto) y un clasificador tipo Dorr Duplex de 71 x 28-1/2' de 19 rastrilladas por minuto. Dado el éxito obtenido en el primer proyecto, se prosiguió con el segundo. Finalmente, el 6 de octubre entró en operación normal el nuevo circuito de remolienda de las partículas gruesas en el circuito de flotación de bulk donse se comparó los promedios de los resultados metalúrgicos obtenidos en el año 1960, contra los resultados obtenidos en el año 1962 y se evidenció que este proceso mejoró la recuperación, produciendo más toneladas adicionales de concentrados.

The required reclamation of land disturbed by surface coal mining often results in the creation of some over steepened slopes which are prone to rapid erosion and sediment production. This natural activity on such slopes is not desirable nor allowed under current regulations. Experience has indicated that novel approaches must be devised to address the problem. Research conducted on field sites in Missouri has indicated that construction, during the reclamation and grading processes, of a man-made drainage system will control the erosion. The drainage system must replicate or exceed the natural system in terms of drainage density and channel frequency. Basic design considerations will be summarized in this paper and field results shown.

At some period during the operation of metalliferous and other commercially valuable mineral-deposits in connection with their underground mining, when the developments therein have become so extensive that their description is tedious and confusing, some scheme for naming or numbering the various workings and their parts is necessary for convenience of reference. A simple and symmetrical yet expansive system of classification must be devised, one that is capable of being extended to cover all possible exigencies and conditions of future operations within the property. Such a scheme, properly arranged, greatly simplifies communication between the various departments of the mining business, as, for instance, between the administrative and the operating departments of the concern, and is of the greatest assistance to the officers of the mine in enabling them to locate and describe particular points and parts of workings and specific kinds of work. Again, in the proper segregation and differentiation of mine-accounts, when they are carried out with that detail which will furnish ready information concerning the cost of a particular piece of work, or the various items and totals of expense connected with the development, operation and repair of each or all of the mine-workings, some such method of clesignatioi~ becomes a necessity. Moreover, such a plan is acl- mirably adapted to the needs of the mining engineer, who, in connection with his reports upon mining-properties, is sometimes required, in his descriptions of certain blocks of ore, to locate lists of assays of samples taken from many and various places, and to designate workings and parts of workings that are located in different parts of the mine, sometimes at points wide apart. A specimen of Westerly granite was cyclically loaded to near failure at 50 MPa confining pressure. Holographic interferometry provided detailed measurements of localized surface deformations during loading and unloading. The data are consistent with deformation occurring primarily elastically at low differential stress; in conjunction with one incipient fault zone between approximately 350 and 520 MPa differential stress; and in conjunction with a second incipient fault zone above 580 MPa and/or during creep. During unloading only one fault zone, that which is active at the intermediate stress levels during loading, is seen to recede.

Caterpillar said it will produce a Cat line of ac electric drive mining trucks. The world’s largest manufacturer of mining and construction equipment said the addition of an AC electric drive truck line will provide its customers with products to fit key applications. “We are very proud of the strong leadership position that Caterpillar has attained with its mechanical drive trucks, and we will continue to invest in strengthening that position,” said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar’s Global Mining Division and Caterpillar Inc. vice president. “We also recognize that there are unique applications that would make the addition of ac electric drive an important and attractive complement to our current truck line.” This is the largest investment Caterpillar has made in mining trucks in its history.

A partial shaft pillar extraction project was embarked on at a mine in the West Wits mining region in South Africa. Prior to the extraction, a rock engineering assessment was conducted with the main objective being to establish which areas of the shaft pillar could be extracted without unduly affecting the stability of major infrastructure within the shaft pillar. Standard numerical modelling methods were used to conduct this assessment and several areas were identified for extraction. However, during the extraction process, it was found that the infrastructure was affected more than was originally predicted by linear elastic modelling. In addition to this, several large events resulted in far more large aftershocks than would normally be predicted. In order to gain an understanding of this phenomenon, seismic data was integrated with numerical modelling as follows: > The seismic data in the form of displacements was integrated in 3D space within the model to assess the effect of static stress changes associated with seismic activity > Data from large events was integrated onto specific structures, where displacements associated with large events were integrated onto the plane of structure in question. This paper describes the methodology and results obtained from each of the above processes and include insights into the mining process that were previously unfathomable using standard linear elastic numerical modelling. The way forward for this rock engineering assessment of partial shaft pillar extraction is also discussed.

DURING the driving of the main haulage level at the Copper Mountain mines of the Canada Copper Corpn., Ltd., near Princeton, B. C., some very rapid driving was clone, though no claim for a world's record is made. Conditions, however, were unfavorable for economical operations. The cost of power was high, for the fuel was of poor grade; besides, during the time the work was in progress, very little other power was needed so that most of the power cost was charged against the footage. The FIG. 1.-DRIFT ROUND USED IN MAIN HAULAGE LEVEL, COPPER MOUNTAIN, B. C. transmission line consisted of No. 4 galvanized iron wire with the result that the line loss was considerable. The voltage transmitted was about 30,000. The plant was operated under a lease, which was due to expire about the same time this work was supposed to be completed; an extension was refused, therefore speed was most important. The plans called for a straight adit 2900 ft. (884 m.) in length. At a point 2800 ft. (853 m.) from the portal, two raises were to be put up to the next nearest workings, a difference in elevation of about 800 ft. (243 m.). One of these was to be a two-compartment hoistway and the other a zigzag ore pass, or muck run. A location for these raises had been determined by a number of diamond-drill holes, but the material to be penetrated by the alit was not known. AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal ribs and movement of the roof and pavement.

Provide an effective method for "soft" soldering aluminum and aluminum alloys using conventional tin-lead solder alloys and flukes. The Problem In the past, it was virtually impossible to solder aluminum and aluminum alloys using standard tin-lead soldering systems (solder and flux) due to the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film which forms instantly on aluminum and aluminum alloys when these are exposed to air. The tenacious and stable oxide film enables aluminum-base materials to maintain their bright luster. But the film also prevents the required wetting and spreading of solder on the substrate, causing the loss of adhesion between the solder and the substrate. The purpose of the mill tests reported herein, was to determine the relative power efficiency of fast and slow rod mill speeds on the ores of the Tennessee Copper Co. The tests were carried out at the Isabella Mill of the Tennessee Copper Co. under normal operating conditions. Every effort was made to keep the ore supply and other conditions constant, but it will be noted that some slight variation did occur. The open circuit 6 by 9 rod mill, and ore, used in these tests have been previously described.' Four motor drive pinions were available and the tests were performed in the following manner: each pinion was used to drive the mill for a period of one week. Constant sampling prevailed during the test run, and a composite sample for each speed test was made. Realizing that some slight liner wear took place during the four-week test-run, and that some slight variation of the ore may have taken place, a second and then a third series of four-week test-runs were made with the four different pinions. The screen analysis of each of the three-week run samples at the various speeds were composited and the results are shown in Table 2. The authors feel that the 22 weeks of operation consumed during these test-runs would represent fairly the effect of each mil1 speed. The data of line 37 show that within the error of sampling and plant operation, the tons of minus 65-mesh material generated per horsepower hour was the same at all four speeds. Obviously, rod and liner consumption could not be determined for each mill speed in so short a time. The rod load was maintained at a uniform level throughout the series of tests. The authors have operated rod mills at various speeds over the past several years, and it is their observation that rod consumption is directly proportional to the mill speed. Likewise, that the rod consumption per unit of work performed is a constant, providing that all other operating factors remain the same. The Thirty-sixth, Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was called to order at the Shirley-Savoy Hotel, Denver, Colorado, Thursday, June 23, 1938, at 11:15 o'clock a.m., by Thomas Allen, Vice-President for Colorado, who announced that owing to the serious illness of Fritz Nyman's father, Mr. Nyman would be unable to attend the convention. Vice-President Allen welcomed the convention as a representative of Governor Ammons. Owing to the overlapping of a previous engagement, Mayor Benjamin F. Stapleton regretfully arrived too late to welcome the gathering in behalf of the City of Denver. Vice-President Allen selected Mr. F. W. Whiteside to preside at the morning session. On motion made, seconded and carried, the reading of the minutes of the Thirty-fifth Regular Meeting was dispensed with, inasmuch as they are printed in the proceedings. Chairman Whiteside suggested that the appointment of the personnel for the Committee on Resolutions, Nominating, Membership and Auditing be deferred until later in the meeting, and on motion made by Mr. Oliver, duly seconded and carried, this suggestion was adopted.

To effectively plan for closure, we must have an end-point in mind. To undertake meaningful rehabilitation, a post-mine land use (or uses) must be known. However, it is becoming more apparent that the end-point or “goal-posts” are shifting - and may continue to do so throughout the life of a mine. As well as being safe, stable and not causing environmental harm, post-mine land uses should always be sustainable, achievable within the given land capability, and they should involve stakeholders in their design and development.The majority of mines in Australia, and around the World, were historically expected to return disturbed land to either native ecosystem or agriculture/forestry practices. However, examples of highly successful final land uses suggest that today’s focus on closure includes not only minimising future liability and impact but also – and importantly – a move towards the creation of economic opportunity (Murphy and Heyes, 2016).CITATION:Durbin, J, 2018. One of the steps in an ore reserve estimate is customarily a rigorous calculation of the in situ grade of the orebody itself. The result of this calculation is usually reduced by some purely arbitrary factor to force the calculation to agree with the observed grade of ore actually mined. The failure of the calculation to realistically depict the grade of ore actually extracted is in many instances not the result of either an incorrect calculation procedure or of sloppy mining practice, but is a direct consequence of unsuspected irregularities in the contact between the orebody and the surrounding wall rock. A pattern of holes spaced at 1.5-3.Om foot intervals, drilled as part of a pre-development program, will often reveal that a presumed "regular' ore/waste contact is, in fact, so highly irregular that it will be next to impossible to separate ore from waste during mining. In such an instance, 'fingers' of waste projecting into the mining block will substitute for equal volumes of ore left outside the mining limits. As a result, the grade of material actually mined will be less than the grade envisioned for the orebody. The volume of waste substituting for ore in the mining block is about 0.4X, where X = the average error in projecting the ore/waste contact between alternate holes in the test pattern, and is expressed in units of volume per unit of area of the contact surface.

"As the demand of raw materials increases in a global scale due to demographic and economical changes, it is necessary to find technological solutions that improve current production processes in an efficient and sustainable manner. The main objective of this preliminary study is to evaluate the properties of foam produced with a cellulose-based molecule as an alterative to commercial frothing agents in flotation operations. There are two potential advantages identified with the use of cellulose-based additives for the proposed application: i) these chemicals can be produced from sustainable sources (i.e., non-edible crops), and ii) cellulose can be functionalized with chemical groups, in order to rationally modify its behaviour. In previous studies dealing with foam stabilization, it has been proposed that some functionalized cellulose species present a self-assembly mechanism at gas-liquid interfaces. Unlike typical surfactant-based frothers, cellulose molecules form networks around the bubbles that act as protective layers to the mechanical stress and to the occurrence of ionic species. This work studied the properties of foams produced in the presence of a partially hydroxylated cellulose molecule (i.e., hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose; HPMC) under various concentrations in a laboratory-scale column. A comparison with a commercial surfactant frother (i.e., Nasfroth 240) is presented, and a rationalization of the behaviour of HPMC in terms of foam properties (i.e., surface tension, bubble size, foam depth) is proposed. INTRODUCTIONThe search for green alternatives to chemicals produced from non-renewable sources has become a topic of major relevance in industry (Choi et al., 2015). As a chemical consuming industry, the mining sector faces now the challenge of adopting new processing technologies and strategies in order to achieve the future demands of sustainability. Evidently, a move towards green chemistry can only take place by identifying substitute molecules offering potential advantages in terms of recovery and grade."
