"INTRODUCTION The Sullivan Mine was examined by Thomas L. Chapman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in March 1943. Samples taken from the few mineralized exposures justified further investigation of the property. To determine whether extensive exploration of the property would be warranted, the Bureau did a small amount of trenching and underground work during April 1943, 3/ under Bureau project 1462.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its, primary objective the, more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratary project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurigical Branch, R. G. The published safety policy of Mount Isa Mines Limited, together with details of the organisation and control techniques adopted by management to pursue an active safety programme within the company, is presented. The importance of communication by management through the organisational hierarchy and procedures instituted to ensure rapid and concise feedback on safety concerns are detailed. The paper also describes the role of the occupational health department and safety committees in assisting management to monitor the safety effort of supervisors and employees. Current safety performance levels are tabled together with details of some aspects of the programme on which safety effort will be concentrated in the future.

A passive acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system has been developed and trialled on two M10000 IsaMillsTM. The analyser detects AE stress waves generated by grinding media impacts with the mill liner during mill operation. Locally propagating stress waves can be detected on the exterior liner surface using strategically mounted broadband accelerometers.The analyser has been developed into a robust commercial prototype system, and has been designed, installed and commissioned with Xstrata Technology at two mineral processing plants.A six-month field trial showed large-scale variation in AE power signature with process conditions. Analysis of the enveloped AE power output demonstrated a strong correlation with mill process conditions – more specifically grinding media relative loading, feed pulp density, feed volumetric flow rate and feed type.Placement of accelerometers along the length of the mill body provided key information on the grinding media relative deportment. The enveloped AE power detected by the mill body, discharge pipe and bearing housing sensors all captured information strongly correlated with mill operating parameters and process state.The prototype analyser demonstrates suitability as a long-term online tool for stirred mill performance monitoring, and potentially for optimisation and control, in beneficiation plants.CITATION:Jackson, C A, Spencer, S J, Masters, J, Sharp, V, McEwan, A, Rainey, S, Catanzano, A, Roberts, G and Millen, M, 2014. "There is a widespread concern that certain of Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform proposals will likely lead to a significant decline in flow through funding after 1988. This does not bode well for the junior exploration sector, which relies heavily on flow-through to finance exploration programs. The exploration industry is actively pursuing various solutions to the problems posed by Tax Reform, in order to ensure that flow-through has a future.IntroductionWhile the proposals contained in Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform White Paper may not be as far-reaching as some people had expected, nevertheless the combination of the existing tax rules and proposed new rules offers sufficient complexity to keep pencils sharpened for many months. After having had an opportunity to study Tax Reform since June 18, 1987, the sharpened pencils are suggesting that the White Paper is not without its shortcomings and pitfalls. Insofar as the mineral exploration industry is affected, there is widespread concern that adoption of certain Tax Reform proposals could spell near disaster for mineral exploration in Canada. More specifically, there seems to be a consensus among the industry, as well as some federal and provincial government officials, that the announced phase-out of the ""mining exploration depletion allowance"" (MEDA) would reduce the appeal of flow-through shares to the point where only a fraction of exploration funding would be financed in the future by flow-through."

"The Riyadh Metro Project forms part of a complete new public transport system integrated in the urban planning and development of the fast growing capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Design & Build project consists of 176 km of a new metro network with 57 km of double track single tunnel infrastructures, spread over six metro lines. During the design phase, geological, hydrogeological, geotechnical and geophysical site investigations were undertaken to chart the, previously uncharted, underground construction space. Different TBM solutions were selected for implementation taking due consideration of the ground conditions of each metro line. The results obtained from deep excavations for underground stations and analysis of the TBM tunneling data will be used as key input for future tunneling projects in the Riyadh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The present paper details the design conditions and presents the solutions for large diameter tunnels in karstic limestone. INTRODUCTION The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh was established in 1974 as the organizational, planning, executive and coordinating body responsible for the development of Riyadh. Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), established in 1983, is the High Commission’s executive, technical and administrative arm. The ADA is responsible for implementing the High Commission's organizational, planning, executive and coordinating decisions and missions (ADA 2015). One of the remits of the ADA is the preparation and execution of a transport plan for the city. The metro network is planned to be the backbone of the public transport system developed as part of the King Abdulaziz Project for Riyadh Public Transport in Riyadh. With six lines and a total length of 176.5 km (Table 1) and 85 metro stations, the metro network will cover most of the densely populated areas, public facilities, and the educational, commercial and medical institutions. The network will connect the King Khalid International Airport, the King Abdullah Financial District, main universities, Riyadh downtown and the public transport center. The public transport plan includes a future bus network with 22 lines on 1200 km and 6765 stops that will be the main feeder for the Riyadh metro network; it will also be the main mode of transportation within and around Riyadh districts (ADA 2015)."

This increase in volatility is shown by a general lowering ref the average distillation rang, of about 2°F. During the post 10 years the Bureau of Mines has made semiannual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the twentieth in the series. The 12 cities in which samples were collected have beer chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.]

"Mining companies have included quantifying uncertainty, or at least risk, as a requirement of project justification for many years. However, many times this process lags behind the traditional mine planning process and the results are rarely used to improve the plan. Nearly every parameter used in a mine plan is an estimate and the mine planning engineer should recognize, and even embrace, the inherent uncertainty in those parameters and its effect on their forecast results. While many of the uncertainties are beyond the scope of the traditional mine plan (e.g. global market uncertainty, socio-political uncertainty, environmental uncertainty), some uncertainties can, and should, be included in the mine planning process.Many mining engineers have incorporated techniques such as Monte Carlo Simulation or Discrete Element Simulation to understand the range of productivity that can be expected for an operation, but most still rely upon one estimated model for what is likely the critical component of technical uncertainty, the geologic resource. Modern geostatistical methods can provide multiple orebody realizations to provide a thorough unbiased picture of the geologic uncertainty. However, most traditional mine planning techniques are not formulated to allow for multiple (100-200) realizations of each material quality/grade parameter.Commercial software companies and research groups are progressing with development of tools that can incorporate geologic uncertainty, and even optimize extraction plans in the uncertain environment. Unfortunately, this author believes that a significant number of mining operations will not be able to adopt these techniques due to the computational requirements of the advanced techniques and the costs associated with implementing proprietary software. In an attempt to encourage mining engineers to embrace the inherent uncertainty in their mine plans, this article presents a cost-effective alternative that can be developed in-house, at any mine, to schedule mid- to long-term mine plans while continuously monitoring the uncertainty in the results. The aim of this article is that by demonstrating the usefulness of such a system, mining companies will encourage engineers, geologists and geostatisticians to find ways to incorporate this powerful data into their processes and procedures."

Safety and health professionals recognize that training is a critical element of any effective safety and health program. An extensive literature survey has led the authors to conclude that we are at the beginning of a revolution in training due to changes in the demographics of the workforce, the rapid growth of technology, and the universal ascendance of the information age. Of present major concern in the mining industry is how to provide appropriate training for an aging workforce and concurrently develop training for the expected influx of new and less experienced miners as older workers retire. This report explores the key issues in the changing safety and health training area as identified by the multidisciplinary team of NIOSH researchers who conducted the literature survey. Issues include generational differences between newer mine workers and the present workforce with respect to their physical, psychological, social, and cultural characteristics; their learning styles and work expectations; and the impact of technology. Some preliminary conclusions are offered for future training needs.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrothermal sulfidation procedure to recover lead and silver from plumbojarosite. The plumbojarosite, generated during pressure-oxidative leaching of zinc concentrate in a commercial operation, contained, in percent, 25.4 pb, 18.8 Fe, 1.4 Zn, 29.5 SO,2-, 3.2 s?, 13.4 total sulfur, and 7.4 oz/ton Ag. The sulfidation was conducted in an autoclave and converted the plumbojarosite to amorphous iron oxide and liberated the lead and silver as sulfides. The best operating conditions were using 50 9 of plumbojarosite and 7 pct s? (2.04 9 S? added) in 500 mL of 2.0 mol/L NH3, 150? C, and 1 h. The sulfidation product contained, in percent, 37 Pb, 28 Fe, 6 S2-, 2 SO,2-, and 11.2 oz/st Ag. Ferric chloride leaching extracted 98 pct Pb and 97 pct Ag from the sulfidation product.

SIR ROBERT HADFIELD, London, England (written discussion*).-We have in the past known so little about tungsten that an important paper such as Mr. Zay Jeffries contributes is most welcome. I have not much personal knowledge on the subject except as regards combinations of iron with tungsten. I put forward the results of my research on natural alloys in 1903,1 and so far as I know the facts there presented still stand. Singular to say, tungsten added to iron affects the electrical resistance less than any other added element. The following tables taken from research work by myself and Sir William Barrett may be of interest.

Personal gain seems to be the most powerful incentive to economic progress. One of my first exposures to this phenomenon was the comparison between company stopes and leaser's stopes in a vein gold mine. The company stopes were 4 to 6 ft wide, whereas the leaser's stopes were so narrow that in some places one could not turn around. The company leased only that ground it felt was marginal to mine with day's- pay miners, but by skillful, careful and energetic mining, the leasers managed in most cases to make money for themselves and the company. The Hurting Truth This capitalist system, which puts a premium on successful risk taking, is under attack. Not that it hasn't been under attack all along. What hurts and angers us at this time is that the attack comes from the children of the system-its youth. Such blasphemy should, of course, be eradicated, root and branch. Or should it? Are we hurt in part because some of the things they say are true?

The theory and practice followed by the Bureau of Mines in investigating electrical equipment4/ made for service in gassy mines are of particular interest not only to manufacturers but also to those organizations that deal with safety anal inspection at the mines. This publication purposes to discuss the theory upon which tests of equipment in explosive atmospheres are based and to consider inspection and other matters pertaining to investigations made by the Bureau in ascertaining whether a machine merits approval. The material in this report is taken from an earlier bulletin,5/ which is row out of print, and has been revised and brought up to date to make the information again available to manufacturers, inspectors, and others interested in the development of safe equipment.

In the context of a case study for an underground gold mine, the value generated by a schedule optimisation tool (SOT) is assessed. SOT is a software tool for underground mine planning that maximises the net present value (NPV) of a development and production schedule. A baseline study measures the NPV of a schedule generated by SOT from a sequence prepared by the site mine planners. Operational resource constraints and precedence constraints are adhered to by the schedule and NPV is evaluated with a financial model including revenues, costs and discount rate, as specified by the mine planner.The case study has several facets in addition to the baselining component. Scenarios were conducted that examined the degree of constraint on operational resources, the projected gold price and unit costs. Life-of-mine schedules subject to optimisation using SOT allowed for equitable comparisons.Haulage was identified as a dominant constraint for the mine. It was one of six operational resources that were used to constrain the optimisation of the mine schedule, with alternative levels for some of these constraints being identified so that their effects on the NPV could be studied. Alternative price projections for gold and different cost projections were identified and their effects on the optimised schedule examined. Price and cost scenarios that brought additional economic material into the schedule at various times in the mine life were considered in comparison to a scenario that assumed no additional economic material would become available.This case study illustrated that the use of a schedule optimisation tool to optimise mine schedules provides mine planners with an ability to perform a wide variety of analyses in a relatively short period of time. Such tools thereby support strategic decision-making that can add significant value to an orebody.The case study demonstrates that by fixing the set of development and production activities to be carried out before optimising the life-of-mine schedule, the mine planners can inadvertently set up a situation where the NPV would be progressively eroded in the last several years of the mine life. The morphology and growth rate of ice grown in supercooled water are markedly affected by convection of the water. A dendritic ice sheet with water flowing past the dendrite tip exhibits deflection of the dendrite spine toward the upstream direction, accelerated growth of secondary spines on the upstream side, and suppression 01" secondaries on the downstream side. Flow causes a thin disk to become corrugated, the corrugations being parallel to the flow. Flow causes an increase in the growth rate of the ice. IF a small seed of ice is placed in slightly supercooled water, it grows initially as a disk with the axis of the disk parallel to the c axis of the ice crystal.' It appears that growth in the c direction is inhibited, while growth occurs with equal facility in all directions in the basal plane. It appears that growth rate as a function of interface temperature is very nearly equal for all directions similarly oriented relative to the c axis. Subsequent to the discoid growth, branching occurs and dendrites develop. The primary dendrite spines grow parallel to the six equivalent a axes of the crystal. Secondary, and in some cases, tertiary spines also grow in these directions. The highly anisotropic: dendritic growth indicates that there must be some finite difference of growth rate for different directions in the basal plane. These differences must be quite small, however, since if they were large, the discoid mode would not occur. Hence, it was expected that the dendrite growth direction could be deflected from the crystallographic direction by perturbation of the thermal field at the dendrite tip. Experiments were done in which perturbation of the thermal field was accomplished by causing the supercooled water to flow past the dendrite tip. The flow direction was perpendicular to the c axis of the crystal, and was perpendicular to the primary spine of the unperturbed crystal. Supercooled water was supplied by a 15 cm cubical copper box, which was refrigerated and insulated so it could cool water to temperatures down to —2oC, and maintain the temperature constant to O.l°C for the duration of a run. Means for observing the ice are shown in Fig. l(a). Collimated light passes through the ice sheet and forms an image on the ground glass screen. A lucite box containing dry air was employed to prevent condensation. Ice of the desired orientation was provided by the seed holder shown in Fig. l(b). This device was made of lucite, and had a reservoir in which ice could be frozen by placing it in a freezer. This reservoir com-unicated with the outside only through a narrow gap between two sheets of lucite. The seed holder (after ice had been washed off its exterior) was immersed in the tank of supercooled water, the narrow gap terminating in a slot in the top of the flow channel. Ice growing through a thin water layer in the gap between the two sheets of lucite was oriented so its c axis was perpendicular to the sheets. This orientation is an application of a growth phenomenon2 which causes ice growing along a smooth solid surface in supercooled water to orient itself so its c axis is normal to the surface. For the past two years, Cliffs Natural Resources in Minnesota has tried an experiment: it has staffed a booth at the Iron Range Earth Fest. ?It was a little unusual for a mining company to participate in an event that centers around preserving the Earth?s resources,? said Julie Lucas, environmental manager at Hibbing Taconite Company. ?But Cliffs is a sustainable company and we want to take every opportunity to share information about our practices. We found the response to be overwhelmingly positive.? Cliffs? outreach effort is just one of the surprising ways mining companies across Minnesota are reaching out to stakeholders and finding success. The 85th annual SME Minnesota Section Meeting (73rd Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium), held April 17-18 in Duluth, MN, demonstrated the Minnesota mining community?s commitment to connection and collaboration, and how that approach is bringing success.

The perfluoro acids and derivatives show unusual surface-active properties that qualify them as possible flotation reagents. They lower the surface tension of water from 15 to 20 dynes below that obtainable with the corresponding hydrocarbon compounds. Fluorochemicals adsorb very strongly on solid surfaces to give films that exhibit larger contact angles than films of the corresponding hydro-carbons. The large contact angles probably result from the terminal –CF3 group. The perfluoro acids are made by electrolysis of the corresponding carboxylic acid in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. From the perfluoro acids many derivatives may be obtained, such as amides, amines, alcohols, xanthates, ethers and esters and others.

The use of gravity concentration is, and has always been, the conventional primary method for gold recovery from alluvial deposits. The development of high capacity cone concentrators and metallurgically efficient wash-waterless spiral separators has had some impact in the technology for alluvial gold processing, but perhaps more significantly has led to the relatively recent use of this gravity concentration technology in grinding circuits of hard rock ore for "coarse" gold removal and for scavenging gold locked in sulphides from cyanidation tailings streams.Gravity concentration systems are relatively low-cost, non-polluting and energy efficient; and their judicial use in gold treatment plants can significantly reduce overall capital and operating costs.The application of modern gravity concentration technology to hard-rock and alluvial gold ore treatment is discussed. Flowsheets and test and operating data from a number of gold processing operations incorporating gravity concentration treatment are presented.

"Hydrocyclone separators are widely used in various industrial applications in the oil and mining industries to sort, classify and separate solid particles or liquid droplets within liquid suspensions, which are considered to be multi-phase systems. Numerous valuable studies have been conducted in recent years to investigate the flow fields inside hydrocyclones. However, much of the information regarding the performance of cyclones in the literature has limitations, based in some part on the respective current-available theoretical models, and much of it cannot be considered as completely applicable to most real-world applications; many of the studies investigated the flow fields within extremely simplified hydraulic designs that are not representative of the complex geometries or large sizes which are typical in industry. Therefore, in this study, the two phase flow system inside the actual hydraulic geometry of a milling circuit hydrocyclone was explored with the aid of both computational and experimental techniques (Particle Image Velocimetry). In this study, the flow field with an air core has been investigated; in essence, the research was a two-phase problem, which caused some challenges on both the computational and experimental sides. Two turbulence models were used in the numerical calculations: the Reynolds Stress Model and Large Eddy Simulation. The computational studies are mainly focused on the prediction of the dimensions and shape of the air core. Different section planes of the hydrocyclone were selected as planes of interest and then were divided into several fields of view (FOV) for PIV measurements. Two dimensional experimental velocity vector maps were obtained in each of the fields of view. The computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow rate readings at the boundaries and locally by comparison to the PIV velocity vector maps and profiles. INTRODUCTION A hydrocyclone is a device used to separate a solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, solid-gas, or liquid-gas suspensions into at least two separate density or particle size components. Hence, the flow field of the hydrocyclone is generally considered a multi-phases flow system. Application of hydrocyclones have been used in numerous industries including oil, drilling, metal working, and mineral processing since 1891, when E. Bretney obtained the first patent for the predecessor design of all contemporary hydrocyclones. A modern hydrocyclone typically consists a cylindrical section at the top where the liquid is being fed tangentially, and a conical chamber attached to the bottom of the cylindrical section, as shown in Figure 1. The characteristics of the feed stream that is injected into the cylindrical chamber play a significant role in hydrocyclone operation. The inlet is tangential relative to the cylindrical chamber and hence causes a centripetal force in the flow field which is considered as the primary separation mechanism."

The Basil Cu/Co deposit comprises a 26.5 Mt Inferred Resource of copper and cobalt, grading 0.57?per cent Cu and 0.05 per cent Co. It lies in the Harts Range, Central Australia, within the Riddock Amphibolite of the Irindina Province. Analysis of drilling within the mineralised zone of the deposit determined a spatial association between pyrrhotite with high magnetic susceptibility and chalcopyrite, following a strong magnetic trend as determined from airborne geophysics. A study was commissioned to examine if geophysical inversion could predict the distribution of sulfide mineralisation based on pyrrhotite from drill hole intersections, as well as predicting further mineralisation at depth or in the vicinity of the deposit. Petrophysical and geostatistical analysis of drilling susceptibility and mineralisation provided a basis of property distribution inside the model. This was followed by 3D geological modelling of mineralisation based on domain kriging of drill hole susceptibility sensitivity testing of signal to source depth, and distribution was performed using 3D forward modelling. Stochastic inversion generated alternative 3D geological models, which were tested for behaviour and adherence to observed drilling data and geostatistical limitations using GeoModeller software. Predicted mineralisation distribution was compared with conventional geostatistical modelling and found to be in agreement in planar behaviour but exhibiting possibly isoclinally folded trends, with reliability increasing closer to the surface. Predictions of mineralisation at greater depth and beneath weaker anomalies were more diffuse due to small model cell size having limited influence on the signal at depth.The Blackbush uranium deposit comprises a 64.5 Mt Inferred Resource, grading 230 ppm U in the Pirie Basin south of Whyalla, South Australia. It directly overlies the radiogenic Samphire Granite and is considered a tertiary unconformity deposit. Sensitivity modelling was performed using high-resolution ground gravity to see if a deposit signature could be detected using gravity. This required 3D implicit modelling of the geology and mineralisation from drill hole data and characterisation of an associated physical property model using domain kriging in GeoModeller. Density models relied on exploiting an observed relationship between logged density and measured uranium oxide percentage. The residual gravity response of the background geology model identified the location of the uranium deposit. Stochastic inversion of the litho/property 3D model has refined the known distribution of uranium from drilling and provided structural insights into the deposit.These projects have become excellent case studies for exploiting the relationship between mineralisation and potential fields and for testing the applicability of using domain kriging of properties determined from drilling to build robust 3D geological models for stochastic geophysical inversion, leading to robust methods for exploration targeting and mineral deposit prediction.CITATION:Zengerer, M, 2014.
