A number of terrane reconstructions conflict with global plate histories or with data from adjacent regional studies. Paleogeographic maps have ignored terranes thus are over-simplified. This paper represents an attempt to "marry" Mesozoic global plate reconstructions and terrane analysis to produce examples of a "third generation" of global plate tectonic maps. The best approach to global terrane analysis involves intercomparison of all regional data and the evolving global model. Data conflicts within and between terranes and regions must be resolved by a system of relative data reliability "weighting." The most reliable and useful data are those which constrain "departure" (rift) and "arrival" (collision) times. Certain ad hoc decisions aid in the analysis (e.g. only one net vector allowed per plate). The maps that follow summarize Early Mesozoic global tectonic history at three critical junctures: 240 MA (Triassic); 180 MA (Jurassic); and 120 MA (Cretaceous). Due to space limitations, maps drawn at 20 m.y. intervals appear elsewhere. A preliminary Middle Triassic reconstruction is presented in Figure 1. Major plates and continental blocks are labeled; smaller blocks are marked with abbreviations. Examination of Figure 1 indicates the necessity of modeling Triassic tectonics with at least 68 blocks. Spalling- off of microcontinental slivers from Gondwanaland is active some 70 m.y. before the actual breakup of the supercontinent. In the SW sector of the Pacific, the Australian margins were embroidered with several terranes (e.g. Sumba) which eventually rifted away and crossed Tethys. The NW sector at this time included 10 microcontinental chips forming a huge archipelago along the Asian margin. All blocks inboard of Indochina collided by latest Triassic. Terranes of the NE sector include several (e.g. Arctic Alaska) along the North American margin, and at least six large blocks (e.g. Stikinia) drifting SE with the Farallon Plate. The SE sector

Six years of laboratory study, followed by three years of mill operation treating more than 10,000 tons of ore, have established the flotation of oxidized zinc ores with fatty amines as an efficient process. Recently the method has been applied with success to partially oxidized sulphide ores. In this paper the authors give an account of their research and the milling results obtained in Sardinia since 1951. CONCENTRATION of oxidized copper and lead ores by flotation has been practiced for 30 years, but flotation of oxidized zinc ores has remained unsolved until a few years ago. This problem is, however, of great importance in mining districts where large tonnages of oxidized zinc ores exist in underground mines or in dumps. Some sulphide ores also possess a degree of oxidation high enough to justify recovery of oxide zinc minerals. Various attempts have been made to float the zinc carbonate, smithsonite. It is well known' that smithsonite can be collected with fatty acids, but as the predominant gangue constituents, limestone and dolomite. are floatable with the same reagents, fatty acids are difficult to use. Gaudin has shown,' on mixture of pure minerals, that smithsonite can be floated with higher xanthates, or better, with higher mercaptans. Another procedure, briefly mentioned by Davis," consists in sulphidizing the ore, activating the zinc carbonate with copper sulphate, and floating with ordinary xanthates. This process was attempted in the writers' laboratory in 1946, but results were erratic. It has since been taken up by Italian engineers and is in operation on certain types of ores. Two other research projects should be mentioned. In 1942 Erlenmeyer and others' floated synthetic mixtures of smithsonite and gangue minerals with hydroxyquinoline, an analytical reagent for zinc. On the other hand, Bunge, Fine, and Legsdin published in 19465 Some interesting results obtained on Missouri oxidized zinc ores. With sodium oleate as a collector and a combination of sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, and citric acid as a limestone depressor, they secured, after four cleaning operations, a good grade of concentrate. With many ores this reagent combination lacks adequate selectivity. In 1939 M. Rey initiated a program of research on this important problem. Work was pursued first at the School of Mines in Liége, Belgium"' and later in Paris in the laboratories of Société Miniére et Mbtallurgique de Penarroya and Société Minerais et Métaux. Reagents used in the beginning were higher xanthates and mercaptans, later fatty amines. Sulphidization with sodium sulphide was found necessary. These conditions make possible the flotation of zinc carbonate and zinc silicate. Two milling plants were put in operation in Sardinia in 1950 and several others are now contemplated." Five years operation of PCR has proved that it is possible to achieve additional capacity with PCR and yet produce high quality cathodes. The impurity level in anodes has considerably increased, and recently, arsenic, antimony and sometimes bismuth have displaced nickel as the most critical impurity.

SOME 40 miles east of Tampa is the center of the Florida pebble phosphate deposits. These are of Pliocene age and consist of several members of the Bone Valley formation.1 Physically the phosphate-bearing formation, locally called the "matrix," varies in thickness from nothing to about 25 ft., usually averages 10 ft., and consists mainly of clay, quartz and phosphate pebble, the latter particles varying in size from colloidal to one inch diameter. The pebbles range in color from dark gray, through white, to cream, and in hardness from that which must be broken with a hammer to that which can be scratched with the fingernail. They assay from 66 to 80 per cent bone phosphate of lime (called "B.P.L." in the trade) or tricalcium phosphate (Ca3P20s) and are secondary apatites. They form from 15 to 50 per cent by weight of the matrix, Over the matrix lies a varying thickness (5 to 40 ft.) of overburden composed of quartz and clay. Briefly, mining consists of two operations2 in open pits about 200 ft. wide by ½ mile or more in length. In the first step overburden is removed by large electric draglines at the rate of about 700 cu. yd. per hour. This is followed closely by hydraulic mining of the matrix at the rate of about 300 cu. yd. per hour. This matrix yardage is moved from an improvised sump in the floor of the pit to an ore-dressing plant, some-times a mile distant, by one, two or three "pit-cars" (pumping units) working on a 12-in. pipe line called the "rock line" to distinguish it from the high-pressure water line feeding the hydraulic giants, which is known as the "hydraulic line." This 700 yd. of overburden and 300 yd. of matrix-1000 yd. in all-amounts to about 1500 tons of material moved each hour. The over-burden is dumped into the mined-out pit alongside the pit being mined. The matrix moves to the ore-dressing plant at the rate of about 7 ½ long tons in 4000 gal. of water per minute-a ratio of approximately one to two by weight, or one to six by volume. This constitutes the "mill heads," but in the pebble district it is called the "matrix."

Solids fluidization utilized in two ways for the commercial production of lime is described. Crushed —6 mesh limestone is dried and dedusted in a single bed reactor, then calcined in a 5-stage reactor. Construction, operation, and results obtained with both processes are given. THE solids fluidization process brought out by the Standard Oil Development Co. in the early forties for catalytic cracking of petroleum enabled rapid transfer of large quantities of heat from gases to solids under closely controlled temperature conditions. As the technique developed, it was natural that applications for the process outside the petroleum industry would be sought. The calcination of limestone to quicklime requires the transfer of a large quantity of heat at high and closely controlled temperatures. For these reasons, this possible application was one of the first to be investigated. Laboratory work conducted by the Dorr Co. indicated that lime produced by solids fluidization would be of exceptional quality. Calculation of theoretical heat balances showed that savings in fuel could be expected. Accordingly, a pilot plant of 10 tons per day capacity was erected by the New England Lime Co. at Adams, Mass., to substantiate the process. Operation of the pilot plant, previously described,' showed that excellent lime could be produced with a saving in fuel. The work also indicated the necessity of preparing feed to remove the finer fractions if dust losses were to be held to a tolerable level. A single-stage fluidized solids drier-stripper was developed to accomplish this sizing.' Subsequently a commercial lime reactor was erected at Adams, beginning operation in June 1949, followed by air sizer facilities completed in November 1951. This paper will describe these two applications of solids fluidization. The raw material for preparation of lime by the fluidizing process is a high calcium crystalline lime- stone having the approximate chemical composition shown in Table I. The stone is first prepared by crushing and grinding in conventional equipment to pass a 6-mesh sieve. After crushing, the material is sent to the FluoDry unit for drying and dedusting. Fluidized Drying and Sizing As shown in Fig. 1, the FluoDry unit consists of a -in. cylindrical steel shell, 9-ft ID by 22-ft 6-in. overall height. Attached horizontallv at the bottom is a 6-ft diam combustion chamber, approximately 7 ft 6 in. long. A refractory constriction dome, consisting of first-quality fire brick shapes, partitions the inside into two sections. The lower section is called the windbox and the upper the bed compartment. The vertical wall of the shell is lined with 6-in. first-quality rotary kiln blocks. In the bottom of the windbox a hoppered section is formed with castable refractory to permit the windbox to be readily cleaned via a 6-in. screw conveyor. The combustion chamber is similarly lined with refractory shapes. On the 6-in. diam section, 4 in. of insulating brick, HW-26, are used. The inner combustion chamber is lined with 4-in. Vermiculite is the mineralogical name generally applied to a group of hydrated, trioctahedral ferromagnesian aluminum platty or micaceous silicate minerals. In microscopic particles the mineral as mineral is differentiated from montmorillonite by a higher Si:AI ratio of approximately 3:l and a higher layer charge and higher cation exchange capacities. Commercial vermiculite, the vermiculite which is mined, beneficiated, and discussed in this chapter, is an important industrial mineral which is formed by the alteration of macroscopic particles of biotite and iron-bearing phlogopite. In natural form it has the size and shape of mica, while possessing the ion exchangeable properties of zeolites and some clays. Within the internal structure of vermiculite lie water molecules, which when rapidly heated to high temperature, transform into steam causing the vermiculite particles to increase in volume. This process of thermal exfoliation produces a lightweight product which finds use in various construction products, agriculture, horticulture, and other industrial applications. In exfoliated form it has the low density and biological inertness of expanded perlite, while maintaining a chemically active surface. Most of the uses of vermiculite are for the thermally exfoliated material. In addition, the cation exchange potential of vermiculite and its layer-silicate structure are properties which can be used as the basis for numerous products including intumescent coatings and gaskets, inorganic films, and the treatment of nuclear and other toxic waste. When chemically and physically modified, it possesses some properties common to organoclays and synthetic compounds. In high purity concentrates and manufactured products, these properties can be altered and optimized in applications to produce superior performance. GEOLOGY Mineralogy Vermiculite was first described as a mineral by Thomas H. Webb in 1824. Webb believed vermiculite to be a variety of talc and described its diagnostic property of thermal exfoliation thusly: "If subjected to the flame of a blowpipe, or that of a common lamp, it expands and shoots out into a variety of fanciful forms, resembling most generally small worms having the vermicular motion exact." Observing that with one exception, all commercial vermiculite has formed by the alteration of iron-bearing phlogopite, a simple definition of vermiculite might be the alteration product of trioctahedral micas, macroscopic particles of which display marked exfoliation when heated rapidly to temperatures above 374°C (the critical temperature of water). The first vermiculite described was found near Worcester, MA, but it was later pointed out by Brush (1866) that vermiculite had been known for some time in Japan as a children's novelty. Because the techniques for mineral analysis were somewhat primitive com- pared to those routinely available today, and because the structure and crystal chemistry of the micas and related minerals were not widely understood, the early literature generated at least 20 "new" minerals which were nothing more than variations in the color and chemistry displayed by vermiculite. Trade names such as Dugarlite, Mandolitem, Strong-LiteTM, and Zonolitem are sometimes used to denote commercial vermiculite, thermally exfoliated vermiculite and their products. Vermiculite particles resemble mica and vary in color from colorless through tan and green to black, depending on the chemical composition. Most physical and optical properties are close to those of biotite, with perfect basal cleavage, hardness between 1.5 and 2.5 Mohs, and specific gravity between 2.2 to 2.8. Fine-sized particles will feel talcose, especially when wet. However, for commercial vermiculite the diagnostic test is that of thermal exfoliation. Vermiculite can display a wide range of compositions, depending on the composition of the original mica and the change of chemistry during weathering and ion exchange. Chemical data for some commercial vermiculites are given in [Table 1]. There are numerous analyses for vermiculite given in the literature, and the analyses of vermiculites from commercial deposits will fall within the range indicated by the average analysis in the table. Many analyses separate the adsorbed water (H2OP) from crystalline water and water as hydroxyl (H20+). The basis of separation of adsorbed water is generally considered to be 100°C. However, hydrate water within the vermiculite interlayer begins to be lost at 75°C and lower. Therefore, measured water content and loss on ignition are combined in the table as H20[total].

Trigger action response plans (TARPs) are inherent to managing multiple hazards such as high gas content with multiple coal seams, high spontaneous combustion propensity, heat and ventilation. TARPs aim to provide assurance and guidance when the situation deviates from the original plan or there is a change in conditions that could be hazardous. Over the years, learnings from various incidents have continuously required coal operations to revisit the TARP trigger values that were based on historical data or guidance values from the industry. In most cases, the background to the basis of TARP statistical data (ie average, maximum, hourly or daily for the monitoring or sampling location) is unknown. The introduction of real-time monitoring devices to monitor gases and airflows has provided greater understanding of the hazard scenarios and their controls. This paper analyses the carbon monoxide data from operating longwall mines and compares these with the historical trigger values to understand the changes and identify improvement opportunities while setting trigger levels in the TARPs. As an example of setting trigger values, those used during the sealing of a panel are explored in terms of setting values based upon the sampling location and the level of risk. A general study of gold refractory arsenopyrite-pyrite concentrate bioleaching has been carried out including two continuous bioleach testworks at different sizes, namely one at a laboratory scale with a 100 I unit at a 2 kg/d dry solid flowrate and the other at a pilot scale at a 100 kg/d dry solid flowrate. Both tests show a 80% bioleaching of arsenopyrite in about four days of treatment and with the same kinetic. Pyrrhotite is attacked at the earlier stage of the bioleaching but pyrite remains unaffected. The weak potential of oxidation associated with the decomposition of arsenopyrite and the abundance of arsenite leads to a high grade of elemental sulfur in the bioresidue which consumes the major part of the cyanide during the gold recovery. Furthermore. the arsenite and ferrous produced in solution have to be oxidized to obtain a stable precipitate in the waste products and as outlined in previous works of other authors on this subject the addition of iron to obtain a Fe/As molar ratio at least above 3 is necessary. The agitation equipment used in the pilot unit allowed an optimization study calculation for scaling-up the design and power requirements of an industrial installation. For the pretreatment of a gold refractory As high-graded concentrate the reagent cost has the greatest part in the operating cost of the biooxidation step due to the necessary retreatment of the biosolution. In that conditions the power cost is quite marginal. actually it is significant for the treatment of pure pyrite.

This paper compiles the results and examines changes in operating practices .since the similar 1987, 1991 and 1995 surveys. Continuing trends are the installation of ISA Process and Kidd Process stainless steel cathode technology, polymer concrete cells, anode preparation machines and automatic cranes. Instrumentation and automatic control are increasing, particularly for addition agent optimization; solvent extraction .and ion exchange techniques are being increasingly applied for electrolyte purification. The overall consequences of these changes have been 'improved cathode purities and enhanced tankhouse productivities.

To operate the Morris Fork Preparation Plant with a closed water circuit has been an elusive goal for Union Carbide. The benefits of a closed circuit have never been questioned. The removal of fine solids from washery water makes possible the recirculation and reuse of the water. Heavy media drag tanks and other separating machines perform better and more consistently with washery essentially free of fine solids. Finally, the production of a clarified effluent makes unnecessary the sludge ponds usually associated with a coal preparation plant. Why then do I say elusive? Because, since plant design was completed in 1970 we have been in hot pursuit of an ever-growing fine solids problem. In four years the minus 28 mesh material in the plant feed has nearly doubled. The replacement of conventional sections with continuous mining machines has led to a lowering in size and quality of product from the mine. In addition, increasing emphasis underground on roadway clean-up has contributed to the fines problem.

Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended. Inorganic acids such as sulphuric acid have found use together with certain reducing agents in leaching of copper-cobalt oxide ores. These reagents are not ideal due to the adverse effect the inorganic acids generally have on the environment and the high costs of the reducing agents. In this study a copper-cobalt oxide ore from the Central African Copperbelt was leached in two different environments; sulphuric acid in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent and tartaric acid. The effects of acid concentration, reducing agent concentration, and temperature were independently determined for both leaching environments. The sulphuric acid concentration was varied between 0.4 M and 1.2 M and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide between 4.0 M and 6.5 M, while the tartaric acid concentration was varied between 0.15 M and 0.35 M. The temperature was varied between 20°C and 50°C. The results showed that the extraction of both copper and cobalt increased with sulphuric acid concentration, reaching a peak at approximately 0.8 M and then decreasing at higher acid concentrations. A similar increase and decrease in metal extraction was observed when the reducing agent was increased. In leaching with tartaric acid, the extraction of cobalt was much higher than that of copper, although extraction of both metals increased with acid concentration. Additions of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide were found to increase cobalt extraction in tartaric acid but had a minimal effect on copper. An increase in the solution temperature had a significant effect in the organic acid environment, with the effect on cobalt extraction being much more pronounced than on copper.

Through the partiality of my fellow-members I have been able, during seven years' service on the Council of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, to note the development of technical societies, a subject which commends itself as an appropriate theme for me, in retiring from the office of President, at a time when we meet in convention with Canadian technical societies. Our next assembly, called at Chicago at the time fixed for an International Engineering Congress, offers additional reason for the selection of this topic. If subsequent statements appear to give to the American Institute of Mining Engineers greater prominence than to kindred organizations, they may be excused upon the ground of long association with and loyalty to its members, and to a personal knowledge of their work. Besides, data as to its growth and development are more accessible; and at a meeting of the Institute features connected with it may be considered as of greater immediate interest than those affecting other organizations. The purpose of this address is, however, to use the record of the Institute as indicating a similar development of other technical societies, rather than to claim preeminence for any organization; the work of each must speak for it. There is a general tendency to form associations at the present time. Organizations have been created and are active in every profession and in all branches of labor, trade, industry, commerce, manufactures, science and art. A record of such associations and their aggregate membership would be startling, and would show how large a percentage of the population of North America is connected with one or more of them; but the figures cannot be even approximately estimated. The class of associations representing national, state, or local trade interests, such as boards of trade, chambers of commerce, etc., may be used as an illustration. A late report shows that in the

IN a series of papers published recently,1 R. F. Mehl and associates have studied the characteristics of form and orientation of many segregate structures and have found diversified conditions which can be explained only by postulating some specific kind of cooperative mechanism permitting the matrix lattice in some favorable region to transform into the segregate lattice in an adaptable region presenting a geometrically similar arrangement of atoms. We have collected the published data on crystallographic relationships of this sort, chiefly derived from Mehl's work, in Table 1. It is evident at once that the crystal structure of the matrix does not uniquely determine the location of the plate structures or other forms assumed by the segregate. Thus, the first seven items in the table represent precipitation of platelike forms from a matrix of face-centered cubic structure, but these plates are found stratified along planes of form {111 }, {100 }, {110 } or another unidentified form, depending upon specific conditions involving the nature and concentration of the segregating substance. Again, in a matrix of body-centered cubic structure, plates, needles or stars have been found and the favored inner surface of segregation may be a plane of form 11101, 11121, 12101, or indeed a surface without crystallographic indices defining a bundle of close-packed lattice lines (strings of atoms) taken more or less at random. Such a surface might be formed ideally by revolving one of these parallel strings of atoms around another as an axis. New underground coal mines have become increasingly expensive to open. A simple drift mine producing a raw coal product can cost as much as $50 million while a new shaft mine producing a washed coal product can cost up to $200 million. As a result, few if any speculative new mines are constructed. Normally, a long term coal supply agreement is needed to justify new mine projects. Negotiating a supply agreement prior to production start is difficult. Pricing must be based on estimated rather than historic costs and coal quality must be estimated from core hole samples versus actual shipments. Further in todays competitive coal markets, there is little margin for error in either price or quality.

Samples collected during the exploration phase of mining represent baseline conditions at the site. As such, they can be very important in forecasting potential environmental impacts should mining proceed, and can become measurements against which future changes are compared. Constituents in stream water draining mined and mineralized areas tend to be geochemically, spatially, and temporally variable, which presents challenges in collecting both exploration and baseline water-quality samples. Because short-term (daily) variations can complicate long-term trends, it is important to consider recent findings concerning geochemical variability of stream-water constituents at short-term timescales in designing sampling plans. Also, adequate water-quality information is key to forecasting potential ecological impacts from mining. Therefore, it is useful to collect baseline water samples adequate for geochemical and toxicological modeling. This requires complete chemical analyses of dissolved constituents that include major and minor chemical elements as well as physicochemical properties (including pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen) and dissolved organic carbon. Applying chemical-equilibrium and appropriate toxicological models to water-quality information leads to an understanding of the speciation, transport, sequestration, bioavailability, and aquatic toxicity of potential contaminants. Insights gained from geochemical and toxicological modeling of water-quality data can be used to design appropriate mitigation and for economic planning for future mining activities.

Some important electrochemical aspects involved in the bioleaching of mixed sulfides have been discussed with reference to selective sphalerite dissolution from different binary mineral combinations. Combination potentials and galvanic currents were measured in different binary combinations of sphalerite with other minerals such as galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite in order to under- stand the electrochemical dissolution behaviour of sphalerite when coupled with other minerals. The effect of applied DC potential was also studied with reference to selective sphalerite dissolution from a binary mineral mixture. An application of a potential of -500 mV (vs SCE) was found to enhance bacterial growth as well as selective sphalerite dissolution. Factors influencing bioleaching of sphalerite under a negative applied potential are discussed.
