The effect of fluoride inclusions on the properties of titanium produced from the Bureau of Mines-developed induction slag melting process is of concern to the titanium industry. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of removing the nonconductive molten calcium fluoride (CaF2) slag used as an insulator between the titanium and the segmented copper crucible. The data were obtained from single-induction-melted ingots prepared with no CaF2 insulating slag and an ingot prepared with the normal addition of 4 pct CaP2 slag. The results showed that the mechanical properties of single-induction-slag-melted and annealed Ti-6AI-4V alloy exceed the minimum values specified in "Aerospace Materials Specification for Titanium Alloy Bars and Forgings AMS4928H." High-cycle, tension-tension fatigue testing yielded similar results. The data from 44 of the 45 specimens were contained within the typical scatter band for fatigue data on wrought Ti-6AI-4V alloy. Although the removal of the insulating slag is a desirable change, the data from the specimens with the previously standard 4 pct slag addition showed no detrimental effect from the slag inclusions.

In this report, the application of the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to a mine located in Ohio using a large stripping dragline, and truck and front-end loader (FEL) is described. The specific objective of the study is to demonstrate the application of the simulator to mine planning and coal production. On the basis of the simulations, it was concluded that the production from the haulback operation should be increased to accommodate improvements in both the stripping dragline's availability and mean cycle time. Several alternatives were studied for the best use of equipment if the present operating parameters could not be improved upon. No economic analysis of these proposals were made.

Evaluation by the Bureau of Mines of published expansion values for magnesium oxide shows significant variation in values, which may be attributed to sample variables, experimental errors, or systematic differences between measuring techniques. To eliminate the sample variable in measuring expansion, thermal expansion characteristics of a high-purity polycrystalline magnesium oxide were determined by 21 cooperating laboratories using one or more of the following techniques; X-ray camera, X-ray diffractometer, dilatometer, interferometer, and telemicroscope. All expansion values were corrected by the author to a single reference temperature of 25° C. Linear expansion was expressed as a power series in the form of the following equation. Expansion (percent) = [[ A + B (?t) + C (?t)2] ?t 104] The constants, A, B, and C, were determined by least square techniques for X-ray camera, X-ray diffractometer, and dilatometer data separately, and for combined data of all five techniques. Expansion values are tabulated from 26° C. to 1,400° C. in 2° C. intervals using constants derived from X-ray camera data. Below approximately 500° C., expansion values obtained by dilatometric and interferometric methods are significantly lower than those by X-ray methods; above 500° C., this bias decreases rapidly. Comparison of results within methods showed the least variance for X-ray camera results; dilatometer and X-ray diffractometer results have about the same variance. The average deviations, in percent, between observed and calculated expansion values among methods were approximately 10 percent from 100°C. to 300°C., 5 percent from 300°C. to 500°C., and 2 percent from 500°C. to 1,400°C. Maximum deviations were approximately twice as large in most instances.

When the skip-hoist was first tried as a means of filling the blast-furnace it made a great many enemies and very few friends among furnace managers. This state of affairs continued until the Duquesne furnaces were built, which demonstrated not only the possibilities of a furnace-stack in the way of production, but also the ability of the skip-hoist to charge the materials necessary to produce the large tonnlage obtained. Every furnace manager, who has operated stacks fitted with the vertical hoist and the hand-barrow system of filling, remembers that the momentous question about the furnace, particularly during a good run, was: "Are you keeping her full ?" and many a good run has been spoiled by the furnace " getting away from the men." With the new birth of the skip-hoist this trouble was eliminated ; but alas! Other and more important difficulties arose. The distribution of the stock, the importance of which is never learned until many different ores and fuels have been tried, demanded closer attention. With all the defects of the hand-barrow system, the distribution—When the top fillers were conscientious in carrying out the scheme of filling arranged after thoughtful consideration by the manager—mas above criticism. It is said that the modern skip-hoist, equipped with an elliptical hopper and receiving-cylinder, and discharging over a small bell into the main hopper, will give just as good results as those obtained with hand-barrow charging, but I cannot agree with this statement. In March, the Minister of Mines, Mrs. Judy Erola, released a mineral discussion paper at the annual meeting and convention in Toronto of the Prospectors and Developers Association. Among the mineral objectives discussed was the revitalization of the "junior" mining industry. That industry reportedly has seen its share of total exploration expenditures fall from 50% in 1969 to 10% in 1979. Some sources believe the reason to be the rise of exploration costs and more- restrictive legislation The junior mining industry reportedly was responsible for 40% of all mineral discoveries in the 1969-79 period. CZECHOSLOVAKIA Czechoslovakia expects its capacity for the recovery of gallium metal to increase from 1,650 kilograms to nearly 3,000 kilograms per year by the installation of new recovery equipment at the aluminum plant at Ziar Nad Hronom in Central Slovakia. World production data are not reported, but the United States consumed 8,000 kilograms (estimated) in 1981, of which 5,536 kilograms were imported. Gallium is recovered as a byproduct of the Bayer process for the conversion of bauxite to alumina, and from certain zinc processing wastes. It is used for electronic applications such as light-emitting diodes for visual display panels in calculators, clocks, and other instruments.

The potash review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. Potash is a general term that includes several water soluble potassium salts: potassium chloride (muriate of potash), potassium sulfate (sulfate of potash), potassium magnesium sulfate (sulfate of potash-magnesia), potassium nitrate (niter) and sometimes potassium carbonate. Potassium carbonate was the original potash when it was leached from wood ashes and dried in large, cast iron pots to black-to-gray crystals (ash) to form "pot ash." "Pearlash" was potash roasted to white crystals. In modern terminology, the great preponderance of "potash" is the mined forms. It is estimated that 95% of the potash mined around the world is used as fertilizer. In 1840, Justus von Liebig demonstrated to the scientific community the importance of potassium to the growth of plants. But there was no low-priced source of potash available at that time. Appropriate management of the ground subsidence induced by coal mining activities is essential. To assess the effectiveness of grout injection for mining subsidence control, time-lapse ground penetrating radar (GPR) imaging data were collected before and after grouting. The pregouting subsurface responses were interpreted to have changed after grout injection. The changes were caused by injecting the grout materials (flyash and water) into the delaminated strata and permeable fracture zones. The largest distance of the observed GPR event changes at the right end of the main profile is 132 m away from the injection borehole. Although the GPR images could not easily tell if the image changes were caused by the injected ashes or the water, it does suggest that the injection materials had been pushed at least 130 m away from the injection borehole. This is consistent with the borehole scan monitoring, which confirmed that the grout has travelled more than 90 m from the injection borehole.

"HISTORYThe origin of roof bolting as a means of roof support is obscure. During the past 23 years a method was developed by the. St. Joseph Lead Co: at its mines in southeastern Missouri, ranging from occasional use of single bolts with small bearing plates to systematic networks of bolts utilizing continuous bearing plates. Officials of this company are not certain which of its employees suggested their use. Many instances of occasional use of roof bolts have come to light during the past few years in widely separated mining districts, such as in West Virginia, Alabama, Illinois, Colorado, and Wyoming bituminous coal mines, and in Pennsylvania anthracite, Lake Superior iron, and Colorado lead-zinc mines. A few of the known installations have boon in place as long as 40 years.These installations usually were made to supplement wooden timbering in mine openings whore space was constricted, although it had been reported that roof bolting was started as a systematic moans of roof support in at least three instances but was abandoned because the cost of installation was excessive. The extra expense above that of conventional timbering could not be recaptured through economies resulting from increased efficiency, such as would be gained through mechanized mining.Roof bolting was first mentioned in mining literature in an article by W. W. Weige 3/ in Engineering and Mining Journal of May 1943, in which he described the use of bolts with 4-inch channel bearing plates in mines of the St. Joseph Load Co."

"The zinc deposits to be described are in Lemieux township a few miles south of the Tabletop mountains, in the central part of Gaspe peninsula, Quebec. Although they have not been worked, they constitute a potential source of zinc and lead and structurally are of considerable interest.GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE OCCURRENCEThe deposits are in sharp-walled quartz-carbonate veins and breccia zones carrying locally, and in varying amounts, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and specularite. Those so far investigated strike generally north-south, have steep dips, and cut through sediments of Lower Devonian age, mostly calcareous argillites or siltstones. Wall-rock alteration is negligible.BROADER STRUCTURAL FEATURESThe principal known occurrences are in the south-central part of a dome structure measuring 6 by 5 miles. The argillaceous sediments are overlain, on the flanks of the dome, by sandstones and lavas. These have been stripped from the central part of the dome, revealing the veins in the argillites beneath. The veins formed after the volcanics, but the fractures and breccia zones in which the deposits formed are confined mainly to the argillite series, presumably because of the greater strength of the lavas.The argillite series is cut by dykes, sills, and small stocks of diorite and acidic 'porphyries' that are older than the veins.THE FEDERAL HILL AREAThe distribution of known veins is shown in Fig. 1. The characteristic features of the veins are well illustrated by the Federal Hill area shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and described below."

Large areas of ground are permanently supported on coal pillars, both in extensive old workings and current drivages in active mining operations. Continued growth of civil infrastructure is resulting in more surface development above old bord and pillar mines and an increased need for mine development beneath existing surface structures and features. The result is a greater likelihood of conflict between miners, developers and regulatory bodies. However, over the last 40 years there has also been significant improvement in the general level of understanding of pillar behaviour and stability, both in Australia and overseas. This paper examines some of the issues to be considered when undermining surface structures or undertaking surface development above old workings. The Factor of Safety (FoS) methodology widely employed for the assessment of pillar stability is reviewed, including the key geometrical, geological and statistical concepts associated with the probability of pillar failure; local and international experiences are examined and significant parameters isolated. Common concerns are addressed in the context of actual practical experience, utilising a risk management approach. Recent advances in methods for the assessment of pillar stability are put forward, along with criteria for arriving at rational design outcomes.

The use of a 35mm non-metric SLR camera and an analytical plotter to prepare close range photogrammetric (CRP) plans of a quarry and open pit mine face is described. The plans, at scales ranging from 1:5 -1:1 000, were used to measure the orientation of geological structures and failure surfaces in the exposed faces.Details are provided on the equipment used and the field techniques. The method:ò is quick and relatively cheap to perform,ò allows the accurate orientation of specific geological features to be determined,ò provides survey results of suitable accuracy that may be used for detailed geotechnical analyses of pit wall failures,ò shows great potential as a rapid and accurate technique for monitoring changes in pit wall profiles with time.

This method of briquetting flue-dust, or flue-dust mixed with fine ores, or, in a few exceptional cases, coke-dust, has come into large commercial use in Europe, and a small plant is already in operation in the United States. It promisea to become of such great importance to the iron industry of the United States that the following description will certainly interest the majority of our pig-iron producers. Discovered in 1908, the process Tests upon the observation of Dr. Schumacher that blast-furnace flue-dust, while possessing of itself no binding or cementing properties, acquires strong cementing properties if mixed with a very small amount of certain salt solutions, the amount of which is so small that the resulting cementation appears to be rather by catalytic action of the salts added than by the mass-action of such chemicals. To be more specific, fresh blast-furnace flue-dust mixed with from 5 to 10 per cent. of its weight of magnesium chloride or calcium chloride solution—that is to say, with from 0.25 to 2 per cent. of its weight of magnesium chloride or calcium chloride—acquires the property of setting within a short time, from 15 to 60 min., and forming a hard cemented briquette. Alkaline solutions appear to have no action such as described, and they even interfere, if present, with the action of the magnesium and calcium solutions. When treated in this way the flue-dust briquette sets very hard, apparently from pure excess of cementing- and setting-power. It is, therefore, possible to mix with the flue-dust a considerable proportion of inert ore or like material, which has no setting-power by this process, and thus to make a compound briquette containing large quantities of ore mixed with flue-dust, but in which the flue-dust may be regarded as the cement or binding-material. "Hydrometallurgical nickel production in Sered Nickel Plant (Slovakia) that treated roasted Albanian ore left behind a considerable amount of the solid leaching residue. About 6 million tons of this fine-powder residue containing approximately 52 wt.% of iron in the form of oxides is to the present day stored in a stockpile. However, its iron content makes it a potentially interesting secondary raw material for iron production. This secondary raw material is not, unfortunately, suitable for direct treatment in iron and steelmaking processes.This paper presents results of the laboratory tests of pyrometallurgical method of processing of the leaching residue by its roasting and subsequent refining melting. The objective of the selective reducing agglomeration roasting was to reduce iron oxides and to simultaneously avoid reduction of chromium oxides and silica. Refining melting is carried out in an inert atmosphere. The products of melting are technically pure iron and slag.IntroductionThe leaching residue stockpiled on waste dump near already non-existing Nickel Plant Sered, Slovakia, is considered to be one of the most important environmental burdens in this country. The 40-years of an on-going effort focused on finding the methods for extracting metals and thus remove the waste dump have not been successful [1,4,5,6]. From the literature survey it is evident that past investigations have been following three main routes:1.Removal of chromium by mineral processing methods prior to its metallurgical treatment to achieve final chromium concentrations below 0.3 wt.%.2.Pelletization of solid leaching residue and its subsequent reduction in blast furnace and steelmaking plant and simultaneous removal of chromium.3.Pelletization of solid leaching residue followed by metallurgical processing of preliminary reduced semi-product in electric arc furnace (EAF) accompanied by partial reduction of chromium."

The United States Employment Office of the Department of Labor, of which the division of engineering and education, under the direction of A. H. Krom, maintains an office at 29 La Salle Street, Chicago, Ill., is engaged in a classification of engineers in order to make their services more readily available in case of need. We have received a form used by this division, on which it requires only a very little time to indicate one's particular line of work, his experience and the salary that he desires. We have been asked to impress upon members of the Institute the distinct advantages that come through registration. Filling out the blank entitles an engineer to free employment service, provides him with direct contact with the Government, supplies him with information in regard to engineering affairs, and helps him to become successful in his profession. The Government wishes every technical man to register, so that it may know the strength and location of the engineering reserve. TULSA SECTION At the smoker concluding the two day meeting of the Tulsa section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Tulsa, Okla., Feb. 26, 1919, Dr. Willis T. Lee, the new head of the Geological Department of the University of Oklahoma, was introduced to the assembled geologists and mining engineers. Dr. Lee requested that the geologists and engineers who were making a specialty of petroleum geology assist him in giving a good course in practical oil geology in the Geological Department of the University. After a motion offering the services of all present in giving lectures on their special subjects had been adopted, Dr. Perrine of Hutchinson, Kans., named the geologists who were pledged to give lectures in Dr. Lee's course. The students in geology at Norman are assured of the latest information regarding practical work in petroleum geology and will have the inspiration derived from contact with men who are actually at work upon the problems which they are studying. Dr. Lee and President Brooks of the University are to be congratulated upon the introduction of this .method of instruction. The plan thus put into operation is similar to the graduate system of coaching in athletics followed at many of the large universities; what is good for instruction in athletics should also prove good for instruction in applied geology.

"A ceramic body traditionally used to produce bricks and roofing tiles with kaolinitic clays was reformulated by the addition of sand and illitic clay. The objective was to obtain a ceramic product with better technological properties. Specimens were made by uniaxial press-molding at 20 MPa and then fired at 850, 900 and 950°C. The determined technological properties were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that both sand and illitic clay contribute to reduce the water absorption of the industrial clayey body. With respect to the flexural behavior, it was observed that the incorporation of sand decreased the mechanical strength. On the other hand, the illitic, incorporated in an amounts of 30 wt.% contributed to increase the mechanical strength of the clayey ceramic.IntroductionCeramic bodies industrially fabricated in the county of Campos, north of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, are still empirically elaborated using a mixture of local clays. These clays are predominantly kaolinitic mineral in nature, associated with high plasticity and elevated weight loss during the firing stage. Due to the excessive plasticity of the ceramic bodies, dimensional defects, which occur after drying and firing are usually obtained. Moreover, the kaolinitic nature and the presence of aluminum hydroxide (gibbsite) confer a refractory behavior to the local clays, which impairs sintering during the firing operation. In the case of clay ceramic products for civil construction, this results in greater porosity associated with elevated values of water absorption and low mechanical strength [1,2]. To avoid these problems, it is necessary to reformulate the ceramic body composition. The addition of both non-plastic materials to reduce plasticity and fluxes to condition the refractoriness is a possible alternative.As an alternative to reduce the plasticity of clayey ceramics sand, which is predominantly constituted of silica, can be used. The incorporation of sand in amounts of up to 25 wt.% to a clayey ceramic body used for roofing tiles fabrication was studied by Vieira et al. [3]. In that work specimens were prepared by extrusion and fired at 850°C. The results indicated that in the pre-firing stages the sand improved the workability of the investigated clayey ceramic body and facilitates the drying stage. It was also observed that the incorporated sand significantly improved the physical and mechanical properties of the clayey ceramic after firing. On the other hand, the apport of flux oxides could be done by the use of illitic clays that have a higher amount of alkaline oxides in comparison with the kaolinitics clays."

A ground-support system for grizzly and haulage drifts was tested in Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel mine. Eight two-piece, wide- flange steel sets were erected in a ventilation drift on the 2315 grizzly level. The sets were lagged with three different materials and back- packed with pea gravel and sand. The pillar on either side of the drift support system was instrumented with stressmeters and rock-bolt load cells, the backfill with pressure cells, and the steel sets with load cells. Results indicate a better survival rate than with typical monolithic concrete.

Windborne dust from alkaline salt flats and mining-related tailings ponds is especially prone to threaten applicable ambient air quality standards. Sodium carbonate crystals, typically present, weather to an exceedingly fine, non-cohesive dust, causing air quality problems for miles downwind. Recently developed specialized polymers react with alkaline dust to form sturdy, wind-resistant crusts with good longevity. An on-going demonstration project at a major trona facility has developed techniques for cost-effective application of these polymers over large areas of soft tailings or sediments in a wide variety of situations. Recently treated areas on the order of 80 acres show effective suppression of dust.
