The essential differences expressed by the different speakers participating in this symposium concern merely the relative emphasis placed on the subjects that are commonly included under the term "geophysics" and the branches of science that form the basis for investigations in this field. In order to appreciate the present situation it may be profitable to briefly refer to a few historical matters. One can find almost countless descriptions of geological phenomena long antedating the introduction of the title of "geology," which has been credited to Richard de Bury in the fourteenth century. Interpretations, when they were offered, were generally pure speculation. Only toward the close of the eighteenth century do we find theories developed as the result of observations and tested by additional observations. It is difficult to select and give proper credit to the individual who was particularly responsible for turning geology into a distinctly observational science. william Smith, who has been called the "Father of English Geology," certainly represents the period when observation was the only method used. As he traveled through the British Isles, "sometimes 10,000 miles in a year," he was continually making notes of his observations. Geikie says: "His plain, solid, matter of fact intellect never branched into theory or speculation, but occupied itself wholly in the observation of facts." William Smith, with others of his time, definitely laid firmly the foundations on which modern geology has been built. Field and laboratory observations can no longer be said to constitute the sole basis for geologic contributions but we have not laid aside the methods of Smith and his followers. It is folly to underestimate the fundamental value of the observational part of geology in the present. The objection to purely observational geology is that it is mainly qualitative and not quantitative, general and not specific. No one can deny this charge and probably there are few who do not welcome every method or process whereby we can put aside generalities for definite established values. Physics is the science that has particularly come to the aid of the geologist in this respect. Contributions of PhYsics It is not the intent of the writer to enumerate or to evaluate all of the contributions to geologic advance in the field of. physics. A few only are used for the purpose of illustration, When Clarence King, Director of the United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, invited Ferdinand Zirkel to study 2500 thin sections of rocks collected from the western United States, the use of the microscope came into general use. Zirkel's report was published in 1876. He was not the first to use transmitted light for microscopic rock determination, some work having been done by Henry Clifton Sorby and others some years earlier, but he was the first to put into general use this method. Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are used in the flotation of iron values present in iron ore. Among the several fatty acids, oleic acid and its sodium salt are widely used. To substantiate the flotation results, the quantum chemical calculations of a few such acids have been carried out by adopting the semi-empirical AM1 method. These acids have been further optimized in the presence of an iron atom. The electronic interaction of the polar carboxylic head group of oleic acid with the iron atom is higher compared to the other acids. Ghana currently exports its bauxite raw without any value addition. Gradual depletion of high grade bauxite (with high alumina content) and the emergence of low grade bauxite (with high iron oxide content) calls for novel and inexpensive ways to recover alumina from these low grade ores. Bauxite users have indicated their willingness to pay 10% to 50% higher for a corresponding reduction in impurities by a similar amount. This project therefore investigates the carbothermal upgrading of the Ghana Awaso bauxite using waste polypropylene as reductant in a locally designed gas-fired furnace. Composite pellets of low grade bauxite sample (assaying 45% Al2O3) containing pulverised waste polypropylene were formed, oven dried, placed in fireclay crucible and fired for 30 minutes. The magnetic fraction after reduction was separated by a Low Intensity Magnet and weighed. It was observed that up to 97% of the iron oxides (occurring as hematite and goethite) could be separated into the magnetic fraction as magnetite leaving a nonmagnetic fraction with over 98% Al2O3 as opposed to the 45% Al2O3 in the as-received bauxite sample. This research direction provides yet another simple but effective way for simultaneously upgrading low grade bauxite and recycling waste polypropylene, whilst at the same time decreasing the amount of waste material generated as red mud after the Bayer process.

As director of the Division of Metallurgy of the Technical Section of the Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, from August, 1917, to January, 1919, I devoted much time to the study of the steels best suited to the construction of aircraft. It became apparent at a very early stage of my investigation that the practice of builders varied greatly in regard to the number of different steels to be used, to the kinds of steels, and to their treatment. Some manufacturers employed as many as fifteen steels while the builder of one of the newest motors, favorably passed upon in the United States, assured me that two or, at the most, three kinds of steel were all he needed to produce satisfactory results. In the matter of treatment, the manufacturers were also greatly at variance. Some treated their steel with considerable refinement while others paid but scant attention to this feature. Some manufacturers case-hardened many parts, while others used the case-hardening process sparingly, if at all. Nickel-chromium steels were used at some works for case-hardening while at other plants this treatment was applied exclusively to carbon steels. Air-hardening nickel-chromium steel was used extensively by some and not at all by others. Considerable variance existed likewise in regard to the steels used for admission and exhaust valves. The conclusion was obvious, that no two manufacturers of airplane motors held like opinions as to the steels to be used or as to the treatment they should receive. Was it to be inferred from this that the many committees and associations that had been created, in part at least, for the standardization of aircraft steels had failed to make proper recommendations or that the manufacturers had ignored their recommendations ? Confining our inquiry to the committees and associations that had dealt with this question in England, France, and the United States, it was found that in Great Britain the British Engineering Standards Committee, now the British Engineering Standards Association, had devoted much time to the problem of satisfactory standards for aircraft steels. In April, 1918, this Association presented a set of specifications described as "British Standard Specifications for Aircraft Steels for Government Purchases in the United States of America." INTRODUCTION The radon problem concerns the radiation exposure from inhaled short-lived radon daughters and the associated risk for the induction or promotion of lung cancer. In several groups of miners which were exposed in the past to relative high radon levels during their underground work, an excess lung cancer frequency has been observed. On the basis of these findings it has to be stated that the inhalation of radon daughters is the most important radiation hazard in mining. Involved in this radon problem in mines are the difficulties to measure the individual radon daughter exposure of miners and to estimate the dose to critical cells and target tissues in the lung from inhaled radon daughters. And finally the reduction of radon levels in mines confronts us with special technical problems which are difficult to solve. Thus the setting of annual limits for the radon daughter exposure of miners alone is not sufficient to guarantee an appropriate standard of radiation safety. Of same importance are the improvement of air monitoring and the optimization of technical protection measures in mines. This has to be kept in mind for the following considerations on exposure limits. The ICRP has recommended in 1959 for the first time a maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for the occupational exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters (ICRP, 1959). This MPC in air was derived from a maximum permissible dose equivalent of 0.15 Sv (15 rem) per year to the epithelium of the large bronchi which was regarded as the "critical tissue". This old MPC-value was derived using a simplified lung model which paid main attention to the dose contribution from the inhalation of unattached 218Po(RaA) atoms. Since this time more realistic dosimetric models for radon daughters have been developed; some of these models will be presented in special papers on this conference. Furthermore in the last 10 - 20 years substantial epidemiological information on the lung cancer risk among several groups of Rn-exposed miners has become available. Taking into account these epidemiological and new dosimetric findings the ICRP has adopted in March this year new recommendations on occupational limits for inhalation of 222Rn, 22ORn and theirshort-lived daughters. This report will be published this year as ICRP Publication 32 (ICRP 1981). The recommended limits for radon daughters were derived from the basic dose and risk limits as they were proposed by ICRP in its new basic recommendations (ICRP Publ. 26, 1977). In the following this basic system of dose limitation is shortly outlined before the special recommendations for radon daughters are described. [BASIC CONCEPTS AND LIMITS] The new basic recommendation of ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) proceed from the assumption that in the dose range which is relevant for radiation protection, the risk RT of so-called stochastic radiation effects (carcinogenic and genetic effects) in a target tissue T increases proportionally with the mean dose equivalent HT in this tissue: RT = aT HT. If several target tissues are irradiated the total individual (stochastic) risk is given by the sum of risks in these tissues: [R = ?TRT = ? T aT HT]. Thus this concept of individual health detriment takes into account the risk contribution from each relevant tissue. It replaces the old concept of the critical tissue, which neglected the exposure of other tissues. Applying this new concept a dose quantity can be defined which is proportional to the total individual radiation risk from stochastic effects. This so-called "effective dose equivalent (HE)" is given by the sum of the weighted dose equivalents in the relevant tissues: [HE = E wT HT with E wT = 1 T '1] The weighting factor wT of each tissues follows to wT = aT/awB, where awB is the total stochastic risk coefficient for a uniform irradiation of the whole body. For the lung as a single organ comprising several target tissues, the ICRP recommends a total weighting factor w = 0.12 (ICRP 1977/79). This concept of risk or detriment, respectively, has important consequences. To meet the objectives of radiation protection the new ICRP-system of dose limitation is based on the following three principles: 1) The justification of practices involving radiation exposures; no pratice shall be adopted unless it produces a net benefit. 2) The ALARA-principle that all exposures shall be kept as low as reasonably achievable; this requires the optimization of the level of protection. 3) The limitation of individual exposure (annual dose limits). It is important to note that the dose limits for individuals are only one part of this system of dose limitation. Furthermore, these limits cannot be regarded as a boundary between safe and unsafe. They have to be interpreted as the lower boundary of an unacceptable exposure region. This means that in addition to the observance of these basic dose limits it is demanded to optimize the level of protection. The "direct process" for the manufacture of pigment zinc oxide produces the oxide directly from ore. This is accomplished by reducing the zinc by means of carbonaceous fuels and immediately burning the evolved zinc vapor to zinc oxide. For many years this was done by smelting a loose charge of ore and fuel on perforated grates. Since this process was developed in America and was extensively used here, it has become known as the "American process." Alternative methods of producing pigment zinc oxide are the "indirect process " and the "wet process." In the indirect process the raw material is metallic zinc, which is volatilized and burned to the oxide. For a long time this has been done in externally fired horizontal refractory retorts. This process has become known as the "French process," from the country of its origin. The wet process precipitates the carbonate or hydrate from zinc-bearing liquors and then calcines the precipitate. This method has been but sparingly used for producing commercial quantities of zinc oxide. It appears to be advisable to restrict the use of the terms "American process" and "French process" to the methods of the earlier periods and to consider the terms "direct process" and "indirect process" as generic terms to designate, first, all methods of producing pigment zinc oxide directly from ores, and, second, to include all those methods of producing zinc oxide from metallic zinc and metallic zinc-bearing substances. American Process In 1796 John Atkinson was granted British Patent No. 2094/1796 entitled, "Manufacture of White Paint." This patent describes a method of producing zinc oxide in which roasted zinc blende or calcined calamine is mixed with charcoal, and the mixture heated in a muffle to liberate zinc vapor, which is then burned to obtain zinc oxide fume. In 2002 the commissioning of an ilmenite smelter on the North Coast of South Africa was extended by three months due to the failure and subsequent replacement of the magnesia-based refractory lining. The lining failed due to the hydration of magnesia caused by an unexpected source of water. The incident resulted in significant financial losses and a prolonged insurance claim which was settled in 2009. As magnesia-based refractories are used extensively in both ferrous and non-ferrous applications, the authors of the paper want to share the experience gained from this incident with others. The paper reviews the literature available on furnace start-up practices and explains the hydration of magnesia using available sources. The incident is studied in more detail, both technically and economically, and the costs incurred are quantified in terms of the cost of the original lining. The paper concludes with lessons learned and recommendations made for future work. The intention of the paper is to stimulate open debate regarding best practices in preheating of furnaces lined primarily with magnesia. Keywords Commissioning, hydration, start-up, magnesia.

An investigative blast programme has been carried out to provide information on the best blasting methods to excavate Chek Lap Kok island in Hong Kong for the new airport. The objectives of the programme included the assessment of a range of blast design parameters and their influence on fragmentation. This has been evaluated by physical assessment, photo digitising of the muckpile and computer predictions. In addition, a model to predict the three dimensional muckpile shape has been successfully calibrated.

A prediction for oil recovery from a pilot waterflood in the Kane oil- field, located in Elk, Forest, and McKean Counties, Pa., was made and compared to actual field performance. Water-injection and production histories, well logs, other field data, and results from laboratory tests of core material were used in this analysis. Performance of the pilot waterflood, initiated in January 1963, was predicted using a modified Craig, Geffen, and Morse calculation technique. Maximum recovery from this low permeable, preferentially oil-wet formation was predicted to be about 22,500 barrels of oil after 300,000 barrels of water had been injected into the pilot waterflood area. After additional field data were collected it became necessary to reevaluate the pilot waterflood area. The gas saturation prior to the waterflood was estimated to have been 20 percent, based on an assumption regarding the required volume of water injected to initiate oil production. In view of the actual field performance, a gas saturation of 13 percent is indicated. When this gas saturation and the method originally proposed by Craig and others are used) the predicted results are more representative. In December 1965, field performance was further analyzed using a hyperbolic-decline curve as presented by Arps. Based upon this evaluation method, the pilot water flood in the Kane sand should produce 37,000 to 42,000 barrels of oil with the injection of 300,000 barrels of water into the pattern. By continuing this secondary-recovery project to a reasonable economic limit, ultimate oil recovery may be as much as 50,000 to 55,000 barrels, or 129 to 142 barrels per acre-foot from 36.5 acres.

This paper describes the application of the Total Productive Management (TPM) technique as a performance improvement initiative for a coal mining operation. It discusses the objectives of TPM, with the driver for improved production performance being the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of the equipment or process, and with the development of "ownership" as the behavioral approach to equipment management and continuous improvement through cross-functional and area-based teams. It illustrates the concept of equipment management as defects management.The scope for application of TPM to the coal mining industry is immense. The harshness of the operating environment can be a major generator of equipment defects, and a current paradigm in the industry accepts these defects as an unavoidable outcome defining maintenance costs in this environment. However recent benchmarking studies have highlighted that maintenance costs per operating hour in some mining operations are more than double the vendor's estimate of "best practice". The paper refers to these studies which also compare maintenance costs of fixed and mobile plant and equipment to "best practice" outcomes in comparable process industries.

"INTRODUCTION The Krausse Estate property was the site of the first lead silver mining in western Kentucky, which began with the sinking of the Andrew Jackson shaft in 1835 3/. The earliest miners considered fluorspar of no value and threw it upon the waste dump, but Crittenden County later became an important part of the western Kentucky and southern Illinois fluorspar district 4/, which has produced about 90 percent of the fluorspar mined in the United States. By 1945, approximately 35,000 tons of fluordpar ore had been produced from the Estate property.This property can be reached by traveling west from Marion on Highway 60 from 2.5 miles, than northward 3 miles. The road from the paved highway to the mines is very rough but not impassable even in bad weather. Ore is hauled 5 1/2 miles by truck to custom mills at Marion, a town of 2, 000 population, where the Illinois Central Railway was a freight station.Hurricane Creek runs through the eastern part of the property. The surface slopes steeply upward to west from the creek, and the topography is rough. The top of the hill is about 150 feet above the creek.The climate permits working throughout the year, but spring rains cause surface water to enter mine and water apparently drains southward along the fractured fault zones, so that when no water is being pumped at properties north of the Krausse Estate a heavy flow comes on the Krausse."

The Bureau of Mines fired seven test blasts in a 22-ft bench of limestone, screening the material to investigate the influence of explosive type and between row delays on fragmentation. Four 4-hole, single-row test shots were conducted evaluating dynamite, ANFO, emulsion, and a 60-40 emulsion-ANFO mix. Three 12-hole shots, with three rows of 4-holes, evaluated delays between rows of 24, 36, and 120 ms. Accurate in-hole electronic delays were used, firing within 1.5-ms of the nominal delay. All seven shots had a 6- to 7-ft burden, 10-ft spacing, with a hole diameter of 3-1/2 in fired on a 12-ms delay between holes in the row. The tests were instrumented with strain gauges grouted in the burden region examining stress wave and gas pressure effects. Fiber optic probes were used to confirm timing and to obtain detonation velocities.

Lime, the "versatile chemical," is, generally speaking, a calcined or burned form of limestone commonly known as quicklime, calcium oxide or calcia, or, when water is added, calcium hydroxide or slaked lime. Almost 40 different lime products are available, a fact which has contributed to the rather loose use of the term lime as well as to much confusion and misunderstanding. The term is frequently, albeit erroneously, used to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely ground form of limestone or dolomite. Lime is usually made from high-calcium or high-magnesium limestone, generally having a minimum of 97% combined carbonate content. Normally, high-calcium limes contain less than 5% MgO. When the lime is produced from a high-magnesium limestone, the product is referred to as dolomitic lime. Calcination, or the production of lime, has its origins in the earliest days of alchemy, with the general reaction class having been identified in an Arabic text printed in 1000 A.D. It was much later, however, in the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s before this basic reaction became understood from a scientific perspective. The production of lime has been so basic and simple that its underlying scientific principles have over the years received only intermittent investigation. Rather, much of the thought and inquiry has been directed toward the development of kilns. Thus, it has only been in the last 15 to 20 years that lime has received any concentrated scientific investigation relative to the thermodynamics and kinetics of the calcination and hydration reactions. Calcination refers to a broad class of reactions, of which the lime/limestone reaction is just one, wherein a substance is heated to less than its melting point, resulting in a weight gain or weight loss. In the calcination of limestone to produce lime, the basic chemical reaction is as follows: [CaCO3 (limestone) + heat (1000° to 1300°C)= 100 CaO (quicklime) + CO2 T 5644 or CaCO3 • MgCO3 (limestone) 10084 + heat (900°C to 1200°C) CaO • MgO (quicklime) + 2CO2 T 56 4088] While there is nearly universal agreement about the equilibrium conditions related to the limestone/lime reaction above, there have been numerous and varied calcination models developed for the reaction. Recent investigations have resulted in the development of the model shown in Fig. 1. From this model it can be seen that calcination is a function of both temperature and CO2 pressure. It does not, however, provide any indication of the rate at which the reaction takes place. Calcination is strongly time variant with different limestones. In a very broad sense this relates to the fact that the calcination reaction starts on the exterior surface of the limestone and then proceeds toward the center. As the calcination reaction takes place, the CO2 released at the reaction interface must make its way through the lime to the exterior surface. Therefore, because calcination is limited by gas diffusion to the surface of the partially calcined limestone, natural impurities in the stone, differences in crystallinity, grain boundary chemistry, density variations, and imperfections in the atomic lattice all play a significant role in

Three hundred soil samples were collected on a one-mile grid in a 400-square mile area of the Oquirrh Mountains, Utah, including the Bingham-Lark, Ophir, Rush Valley, and Mercur mining districts. The soil samples were analyzed for copper, lead, zinc, silver, molybdenum, manganese, and iron by X-ray fluorescence using arsenic as an internal standard. Anomalies coincide in most cases with the mining districts. However, in the Mercur district no anomalies were detected. Also samples collected one mile from the Bingham mine barely reflect this major producer. No samples were collected within the Bingham mine area.

Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals and consequently this property is an attractive feature which makes it a leading candidate for use in electronic devices. The research conducted was focused primarily on the development of a process for obtaining a deposited silver-coating onto alumina, for applications related to electrical-conducting devices and, ancillarily, catalysts. Alumina balls and plane substrates were utilized for the investigation. The coating process employed an aqueous arnmoniacal silver-nitrate electrolytes with a formaldehyde solution as the reductant. Modifying additives - an activator which would be expected to promote good deposition-characteristics onto the (dielectric) substrate and an inhibitor which would obviate homogeneous reduction (precipitation) of silver was observed when the activator-containing silver-electrolyte reductant constituents were combined. However, the silver-electrolyte/reductant system with inhibitor could be employed (at 80°C) to achieve a viable (subject to future research optimization) coating on alumina. The influence of the processing temperature on the deposition process was delineated during the course of the research. The morphology of the deposited-silver on the alumina balls was assessed by SEM imaging. A tape-peel test was employed, with the plane substrates, to semi-quantitatively characterize the adhesion to the alumina.

Para determinar cuáles son los factores en el estudio económico, es necesario conocer las cuatro calidades básicas de las bolas de las moliendas: las bolas de aleación de acero, forjadas y con tratamiento térmico, las bolas de acero al carbono forjadas y con tratamiento térmico, las bolas de aleación de acero fundido y las bolas de fierro fundido. Los productos fundidos generalmente no son tratados térmicamente y las bolas de fierro fundido son un producto de bajo precio y más ordinario. En este sentido, una bola tratada térmicamente sea en aleación de acero o de acero al carbono, tendrá una estructura granular más fina que las de los productos fundidos. Para fijar la economía de un tipo de bola, se utilizan dos formas de investigación: la prueba de bolas marcadas y la de resultados de producción, estableciendo esta última como la más exacta, aunque requiera molinos duplicados para medir su producción. Luego, se procede a experimentar con diferentes tipos de bolas -a través del costo de transporte y manejo requeridos para moler una tonelada de mineral- y asi determinar cuál es la bola más económica para cada operación. Posteriormente se evalúa la facilidad de la molienda y se delimita la carga de bolas que se aproxime mejor a la carga balanceada.

ALTHOUGH a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes. CHARACTERISTICS AND REQUIREMENTS OF SOLDERS IN GENERAL General Physical Properties.-When cast into bars, solder should present a smooth and bright appearance free from oxide inclusions and bubbles. Ductility should be as great as possible without sacrificing tensile strength, and vice versa. Hardness and specific gravity are not of any great importance. Melting Characteristics.-The melting or solidification range is important. This statement applies both to the extent of the range and to the actual temperature at which complete solidification occurs. A rather narrow solidification range is desirable in soft solders in order that solidification may take place quickly. "The Direct Nickel process is a hydrometallurgical technology being developed to treat nickel laterite ores by leaching at atmospheric pressure. The leaching process uses nitric acid in a relatively large excess, is thus non-selective, and much of the soluble iron goes into solution. The first stage of solution purification is iron hydrolysis and the Direct Nickel process utilises the colligative properties of the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to enable the removal nitric acid of varying concentrations via distillation. Once sufficient acid has been removed, the boiling point of the solution is increased allowing high temperatures (up to ~170°C) to be achieved under atmospheric pressure. The higher temperatures initiate the precipitation of the iron primarily as hematite and allow the removal of the acid generated by the hydrolysis reaction. The rejection of the iron is near complete with solution tenors typically falling from 65 g/L Fe, or more, to less than 50 mg/L Fe. The separation of clean nitric acid from the PLS at this stage allows for relatively simple acid recycling. A hematite product with iron content above 60% could also provide an extra revenue stream.INTRODUCTION The Direct Nickel (DNi) Process is a novel hydrometallurgical processing route designed to treat all types of nickel laterite ores in a single flow sheet using nitric acid under atmospheric conditions. A simplified flow sheet is shown in Figure 1.Between 2007 and 2012 the process was developed and refined at Direct Nickel’s laboratory within the CSIRO Minerals’ facilities in Perth, Australia, and in 2013 a series of pilot plant trials were run under continuous operating conditions. The process is designed to treat both limonite and saprolite in the same flow sheet, and after comminution, the blended ore is mixed with nitric acid and leached just below boiling point in agitated atmospheric leach tanks. The acid is added in excess, so typically for a blend of limonite and saprolite the acid addition can be in the order of 1.8-2.0 t acid/t dry ore. After a residence time of between 4-6 hours the majority of the soluble metals have leached into solution and the insoluble leach residue is separated from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) via counter-current decantation."

"The Red Rose mine is in the Rocher Deboule mountains about 8 miles east of Skeena Crossing and a like distance south of the town of Hazelton; the most northerly settlement on the Prince Rupert line of the Canadian National railway and 177 miles northeast by rail from Prince Rupert. The mine workings are on the north side of Balsam or Red Rose creek; a tributary of Juniper creek that drains via Kitseguecla river into the Skeena near Skeena Crossing. A truck road 11 miles long extends from Skeen a Crossing (elevation 650 feet) to the Red Rose mill (elevation 4; 100 feet). The mine workings lie between 5; 600 and 6; 300 feet above sea-level. Mine and mill are connected by a 1-mile aerial tramway and a tractor trail.The Red Rose claims were staked about 1910 by prospectors attracted to the district by the construction and near completion of the railway between Prince Rupert and Jasper. For a number of years interest centred in prospecting a sheared zone exposed in a ravine between elevations of 5,425 and 5,825 feet. Several adits were driven and some high gold assays were obtained in vein quartz in the sheared zone, but this work did not develop sufficient ore and the property finally closed down. In the early twenties of this century tungsten minerals were discovered in the northern extension of the vein, but nothing was done to test this deposit. Finally, in 1940, spurred by the wartime demand for tungsten, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada drilled the tungsten-bearing vein, and although results were none too encouraging, underground work was begun in June 1941. The latter work disclosed substantial amounts of ore. A small mill, subsequently enlarged, began operation early in January 1942 and by the autumn of 1943 some 1,194,000 pounds of tungsten concentrate had been recovered. Mining ceased in November 1943 because of orders from the Metals Controller that no more shipments would be permitted."
