ABSTRACT The numerous global uranium deposits vary significantly in mineralogy, grade, and textural characteristics; therefore, information from traditional (or conventional) sources on the fundamentals of leaching uranium and gangue minerals is not always applicable when studying particular ores. Empirical studies can be effective in understanding leach systems and can lead to improvements in process design but there remains a lack of fundamental understanding necessary for ongoing process optimization as ore bodies continue to vary. ANSTO Minerals has undertaken a work program to address several fundamental questions about uranium leaching, including the unexpected impact for some ore types of leaching at high oxidation potential.

METAL mines were developed long before coal mines and the early lighting of underground workings was effected by torches and candles. The early coal mines were outcrop workings and little trouble was experienced from gas, but as the mines became deeper and shaft mines were opened it became apparent that an open-flame lamp was exceed-ingly dangerous where gas occurred. No satisfactory way of lighting gaseous coal mines was found until Sir Humphrey Davy brought out his famous safety lamp in 1815. The introduction of the Davy lamp was a great step forward but it was unsatisfactory from a light standpoint because the gauze absorbed a large percentage of the light given out by the flame. Clanny corrected this by the introduction of a cylindrical glass lens, which not only per-mitted a free distribution of the light from the flame but added greatly to the safety by eliminating the possibility of the flame coming in contact with the gauze and by protecting the flame against air currents. A very complete story of the flame safety lamp since its inception is given in the U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 227, by J. W. Paul, L. C. Ilsley and E. J. Gleim, published in 1924. A little more recent publication, known as Safety in Mines Research Board Paper No. 4, entitled "The Light Power of Flame Safety Lamps," by R. V. Wheeler and D. W. Woodhead, was published in England in 1927. The flame safety lamp was the-only lamp available for gaseous mines for about 100 years. Although the incandescent electric lamp has been in use over 50 years, it was not found safe to use this lamp from wired circuits in gaseous locations. The storage battery was advocated shortly after the develop-ment of the incandescent lamp but until the introduction of the tungsten filament in the miniature mine-lamp bulb, the battery lamp was not a real possibility because of the excessive weight of the battery necessary to produce a sufficient amount of light. The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. Alkyl hydroxamic acid was shown to be a suitable collector for the flotation of pyrochlore from carbonatite niobium oxide ores. In the direct batch rougher flotation from the ore without desliming, over 85% of the pyrochlore can be recovered at about 30% mass pull. Cleaner flotation tests showed that the rougher concentrate can be upgraded. The adsorption mechanisms of octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA) were studied by using high purity pyrochlore and calcite mineral samples and employing analytical measurements such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV/VIS spectroscopy. FTIR showed a shift of the vibrational frequencies of the carbonyl group in hydroxamic acid after adsorption on pyrochlore and calcite, and the shift was more pronounced on pyrochlore. XPS results indicated a lowering of the binding energies (chemical shift) of Nb3d5/2 and Ca2p3/2 electrons on pyrochlore, and the lowering of the binding energies of Ca2p3/2 electrons on calcite, again with the shift being more pronounced on pyrochlore. The results indicated hydroxamic acid formed stronger complexes with pyrochlore than with calcite. Adsorption isotherms indicated that OHA adsorbed more on pyrochlore than on calcite at low concentration. At high concentrations, the adsorption densities on both minerals were similar. All results explained the observed selectivity of the reagents in the flotation of the carbonatite niobium oxide ores.

The previous survey of world copper smelters was in 2016 (Copper, 2016). The copper smelting industry has grown and improved considerably since then, including continuing growth in China and modernization in Japan (Extraction, 2018). Outotec flash smelting and Outotec flash smelting/Kennecott - Outotec flash converting continue to be adopted while newer processes continue to be adopted in China. In addition, some of the world's original flash furnaces have been completely rebuilt (Extraction, 2018). This paper provides recent industrial production data and discusses these new developments. INTRODUCTION A world copper survey was redone in 2016 after a thirteen year lag since 2003. Some of the notable changes were the significant increases in production particularly from China. Since then, several smelters have gone through modernization processes and decommissioning of older technologies. This paper will review the notable changes since the last publication at Cu2016. In the last paper, Copper Smelting: 2016 World Copper Smelter Data, the author gave an audible sigh after observing that copper smelter sites as well as new and notable smelters have been spreading like wildfire in China since 2003. Indeed, seeing is believing. Figure 1 shows the Ningde Copper Smelter (double flashing, 400,000 MT Cu/Year capacity) that started up producing copper in 2018; Figure 2 shows the Nanguo Copper Smelter that is under construction with 300,000 MT Cu/Year capacity (first phase, side blown smelting and continuous top blown converting). We should not only admire the Chinese copper industry’s significant technological developments, but also the copper price support that it has provided throughout this century.

The traditional method of deep sea manganese nodule exploration is to conduct grid survey and sampling on successively finer scales until a suitable deposit has been delineated. Clearly this is both time consuming and ultimately self-defeating if large areas of the ocean floor are to be explored on a human timescale. A conceptual deductive approach would be preferable if one could be found, as it would aim to outline areas of potentially economic nodules on the basis of easily measurable oceanographic parameters. An attempt to achieve this aim in the Central Pacific is outlined below. Nodule Distribution in the Central Pacific Ocean Maps of ore grade nodules in the Central Pacific show that they are confined to two zones trending roughly east-west which are well separated in the eastern Pacific but which tend to converge towards 170-180ºW. They follow the isolines of intermediate biological productivity in the surface waters, strongly suggestive of a biological control on their distribution. Within these zones the nodules preferentially occupy basin areas. Thus they are found in the Penrhyn Basin, Tokelau Basin, Central Pacific Basin, Clarion Clipperton Zone and Tiki Basin. Nodules in all these areas have features in common and are thought to have obtained their distinctive composition by similar processes.

Several studies have suggested that pulmonary toxicity to asbestos and silica may be mediated through oxidant-induced cell injury. We have reported recently that surface radicals associated with freshly fractured silica may be an imponant factor in cell injury and induction of pulmonary disease. Although the generation of oxygenated radicals in dust-cell interactions has been demonstrated, there are no data correlating the toxicity of a dust with the level of oxygen radical generation by the dust during its interaction with phagocytic cells. In the present study, we have investigated the in vitro generation of oxygen free radicals from human neutrophils and rat alveolar macrophages stimulated with freshly fractured silica, aged silica, amosite, crocidolite, chrysotilc, and a nontoxic dust, barite. Electron spin resonance (ESR) with the aid of a spin trap phenyl-N-ten-butyl nitronc (PBN) was used to measure the oxygen radicals generated during phagocytosis of the dusts. The relative toxicity index and ESR peak heights, on an equal surface area basis and normalized to barite as one, showed a direct relationship. The normalized toxicity indices and peak heights were: silica, 3.5 versus 2; chrysotile, 4 versus 2; crocidolite, 11 versus 8; and amosite, 26 versus 13. Addition of hydroxyl radical scavengers such as catalase, dimethyl sulfoxide, 1,3 dimethyl-2-thiourea (DMTU), sodium benzoate, and mannitol prevented the radical generation. Carmustine, a glutathione reductase- glutathione peroxidase inhibitor, caused a 5-fold increase in the radical generation. These results indicate that a nontoxic dust such as barite generates toxic oxygen radicals at a minimal level that can be quenched by the normal cellular defense system. For toxic dusts such as silica, amositc, chrysotile, and crocidolite, the potential for oxygen radical generation is enhanced by their surface propenies, physical dimensions, and the surface-based radical-generating redox sites. The enhanced radical generation may impair the cellular defense system, resulting in cell injury. Use of scavengers, chelators, and potentiating agents suggests the membrane-based oxidase system as the probable primary source of the radical-generating system. The data presented herein suggest the generation of oxygen free radicals as an important primary event in silica- as well as asbestos-induced cell injury.

"The Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health, Inc. (Foundation) was established as part of a Non-Prosecution Agreement (Agreement) entered in December 2011 by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the United States Department of Justice and Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (""Alpha"") and Alpha Appalachia Holdings, Inc. This Agreement was related to the explosion at Upper Big Branch Mine, an underground coal mine owned by Performance Coal Company, a former affiliate of Massey Energy Company, which Alpha acquired in June 2011. Pursuant to that agreement, Alpha agreed to establish a trust to fund projects designed to improve mine health and safety by providing $48,000,000 into the trust. The mission and vision of the Foundation are as follows:Mission: To improve mine health and safety through funding research and development projects by qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.Vision: To enable miners in the future to be free of work-related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the Foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute.The focus of the research effort is not limited to coal mine explosion prevention, and in fact encompasses the entire spectrum of health and safety, addressing issues in both underground and surface mining operations in all mining sectors. Four major focus areas are identified (see Figure 1): 1) Health and Safety Interventions; 2) Mine Escape, Rescue, and Training; 3) Safety and Health Management and Training; and 4) Injury and Disease Exposure and Risk Factors.The Foundation is seeking to expand the knowledge base of mining safety and health information that can lead to resolving complex mining problems. Although once fairly common as a method of coal preparation in the United States, dry cleaning has virtually disappeared. Low-rank coals used for power generation in the western U.S. are suited for dry cleaning because water has limited availability in the American west. Surface moisture added through wet cleaning offsets energy improvement achieved from mineral matter reduction. Information will be presented on the commercial application of dry cleaning in North America, the historic development and current status of the technology, and the introduction of modern processing theory and control technology to the design of dry cleaning equipment and plants.

Longstanding mining of copper deposits in the Legnica-Glogow Mining Basin, Poland has accumulated broad experience concerning the impact of geological and mining conditions on seismic and rockburst hazard. Methods of rockburst prevention for deep copper mines have been developed based on gathered data. Methods of rockburst hazard evaluation and rockburst control constitute a set of rockburst prevention measures. Due to their nature and location within the production process, prevention methods can be passive or active. Active methods of rockburst prevention consist of the liquidation of stresses in the areas where they are concentrated through controlled generation of rock-mass tremors and rockburst by blasting works (group extraction blasting, release blasting in the rock mass and pillars able to accumulate the stress, as well as in the roof and floor). Group blasting works as a basic method are very effective in copper mine conditions. Provocation of dynamic events makes it possible to control the timing of their occurrence. In Polish copper mines, all blasting works are made during the absence of miners in the mining fields. Daily distribution of both the number of recorded strong seismic events and volume of energy released, confirm the advisability of using this kind of rockburst hazard prevention. The rockburst hazard prevention methods developed over 40 years of copper deposit extraction are economically reasonable and offer sufficient effectiveness under high rockburst hazard conditions.

An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between silica surfaces immersed in solutions of hydrolysable cations and/or sodium oleate. Hydrophobic forces were observed at the pH range where the concentration of the singly-charged hydroxo-complexes (CaOH+ or MgOH+) in solution is the highest. In the absence of oleate, the adsorption of the hydroxo-complexes was indicated by the disappearance of the repulsive hydration force. These results suggest that the hydrolysable cations adsorb on silica as singly-charged hydroxo-complexes. Based on the results obtained in the present work, a model for the adsorption of hydrolysable cations has been developed.

DIFFUSION coefficients of Hf181 in the high-tem-perature bcc phase of reactor-grade hafnium were determined at temperatures of 1795° to 1995°C by standard lathe-sectioning techniques. The temperature dependence of the data may be described by an Arrhenius-type expression for this limited temperature interval. However, hafnium is classed with the "anomalous" bcc metals zirconium, titanium, and y uranium by the low values of Do and Q observed in this study. The hafnium metal was received as 1/2-in.-diameter crystal bar. Analyses by the Analytical Chemistry Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory showed the major impurity to be zirconium— about 2.1 pct. The total interstitial content was about 225 ppm with 190 ppm of this oxygen. The Hf"' was supplied as HfC12 in HC1 solution by the Isotopes Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The hafnium bar was cut into disk-shaped specimens 3/8 in. long. One of the flat faces of each specimen was metallographically treated and then the isotope was deposited by vacuum evaporation from a tungsten filament. A 3 by 3 in. NaI (Tl) crystal with a single-channel analyzer was used for counting y rays with energies of 0.3 to 0.7 Mev. The as-deposited layers of isotope had counting rates of about 200 counts per sec. Specimens were annealed in argon in a tantalum resistance furnace. Temperatures were measured with a microoptical pyrometer calibrated for the particular furnace sighting conditions. All sectioning was done by standard lathe techniques. Section weights were determined on a semimicrobalance. A density of 12.5 g per cu cm was used in determinations of section thicknesses. Activities associated with the various sections were measured and the penetration data were treated using the computer code by winslow.' In all cases, except for specimens annealed at temperatures below 1795°C, normal Gaussian penetration behavior resulted. Another key variable is the maximum velocity at which a piece of mobile mining equipment can operate in this limited space. Typical velocity-clearance curves for different mine transportation systems are developed and characterized. Applications of the relationships are examined, emphasizing their significance in designing and controlling mine materials handling system.

The PACMANUS and Jade deposits are two active hydrothermal fields that are forming massive sulphide deposits at the Pacific rim margin. Both are associated with felsic submarine volcanic rocks and both occur in back-arc settings. However, PACMANUS is associated with almost sediment-free dacites and lies on the crest of a volcanic ridge, whereas Jade occurs in a heavily-sedimented tectonic depression associated with a basement of pumiceous rhyolite. The PACMANUS deposit is richer in Cu and Au, and Jade in Pb. Zinc, Ag, As and Sb contents are similar. Sulfide textures at PACMANUS suggest formation of Cu and Zn sulfides by simultaneous double-diffusion involving inwards-moving seawater mixing with outwards-moving hydrothermal fluid. By contrast, at Jade there is a more complex history of formation where initial growth of barite on the sediment surface, probably associated with microbial activity, formed an impervious cap which trapped higher temperature hydrothermal solutions.

"Mining companies routinely invest in improvements to their processing operations, but often these enhancements do not work to full effect.Improvements can be ineffectual because underlying process problems are not identified or prioritised for correction or repair.This is frequently because ‘black box’ solutions deployed to implement process control improvements typically rely on instrumentation to provide data for algorithms to work effectively, and these solutions are often ineffective or disabled at mineral processing sites.There are three key reasons they can fail to deliver: vital instrumentation is not calibrated or functioning as required basic process control and loop tuning was not implemented correctly or is in need of tuning there is an inability to support the ‘black box’ solutions on-site.Many of these problems can be overcome by implementing operational analytics that identify where problems are occurring and prioritise where improvements need to be made.Incorporating operational analytics into process improvement is not a new methodology. It is more a back-to-basics approach to make more efficient use of capital and systems already deployed.Data collection systems, such as the OSIsoft PI System, provide real-time and historical process information for process control experts to analyse and identify areas for improvement. However, most systems are not used effectively. With some simple enabling, data collection systems can provide evidence for prioritising investments in improvements and determining an investment’s effectiveness.MIPAC advocates that the initial step, with analytical evidence, is that clients review the control strategies and implement small influential instrument repairs/calibrations and operator training. An important factor in the design and operation of a lignite-gasification plant is knowledge of the thermal requirements. These not only vary with different-size plants but also with the operating conditions for a plant of given capacity. Thermal data have been collected since 1945 from a commercial-scale lignite-gasification pilot plant operated by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak. The description and operation of this plant and a study of the gas-composition data have already been described in previous reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).2) / This investigation was made to review the thermal data taken in tests and to correlate them in terms of the fraction of undecomposed steam and the H2:CO ratio.

This study examined the structures of the Bowen Basin in central Queensland, Australia, by a series of lineament analyses. These studies were carried out using published geological maps, NOAA-AVHRR imagery, and LANDSAT MSS. Comparisons between these various data sources allowed the discrimination of the nature of the observed lineament sets and the time of their development. These data, which have been verified by field work, allowed the development of an integrated structural model of the Basin as an area of compression. This is considered in the light of a plate tectonics framework for northeastern Australia. The study showed that geological structures of great significance to mining operations, such as strike slip faults and large thrusts, could be identified and mapped using a combination of satellite imagery and field investigation. The small scale view of the satellite imagery also facilitated the development of a structural model for the Bowen Basin.
