The ferrous and ferric oxide concentrations of slags, expressed as j = Fe+++/(Fe+++ + Fe++), have been established through gas-slag equilibrium at 1550°C in a range of oxygen pressure of 10-I to 10-9 equilibriumatm. The value of j is increased by basic additions (BaO, CaO, MgO, MnO) and decreased by acidic oxides (SiO2 and TiO2). Oxygen pressure is shown graphically as a function of composition for slags which are analogous to those at the slag-gas interface of the open hearth furnace. THE progress which has been made in recent years in understanding the chemistry of metallurgical slags has been based largely on studies of slag-metal and slag-gas equilibria. There is a considerable body of knowledge which is applicable to reactions occurring at the slag-metal interface in open hearth steelmaking. There is little information concerning reactions of the slag with the furnace atmosphere and hence little basis for an understanding of the transfer of oxygen, sulphur, or hydrogen between gas and slag. The oxygen pressure of the open hearth atmosphere is normally of the order of 10-1 to 10-3 atm which differs by several orders of magnitude from that of about 10" atm at the slag-metal interface. The chemical properties of the slag, for example, the ratio of ferric to ferrous iron and the ability of the slag to hold sulphur in solution, are greatly affected by changes in oxygen pressure. This investigation was undertaken to enlarge our knowledge of the effect of oxygen Pressure on steel-making slags. Using air or controlled mixtures of CO a CO2 a range of oxygen Pressures from 10.' to 10.' was covered. Review of the Literature There are only a few references in the literature which pertain directly to this investigation. The most important is that of Darken and Gurry1,2 on the system iron-oxygen. This work included the determination of the phase diagram of the system and also a study of the field of homogeneous melts and their oxygen pressures. Their apparatus and procedure were very similar to that used in this study. Iron oxide was melted in a platinum crucible under an atmosphere of CO2:CO, CO2:H2, H2O, CO2, air or O2 depending upon the partial pressure of oxygen desired. After equilibrium was reached, the sample was quenched and analyzed for ferrous and ferric oxide. By appropriate calculations these authors were able to determine the oxygen and iron activities in the various slags, heats of formation of the oxides of iron, and heats of solution of iron and oxygen in the liquid slags. In a subsequent paper' the same authors made a less thorough investigation of the effects of additions of lime and manganese oxide on the composition of iron oxide melts. Only a few experiments were made and those in a narrower range of temperature and oxygen pressure. Darken' has investigated the fusion temperature of iron oxide in contact with silica under various atmospheres. He found that the temperature changes from 1120° to 1447°C as the gas composition changes from CO2/CO equal to 20.8 to pure oxygen. Designers, engineers, and contractors are using three-dimensional seismic tomography for geotechnical site investigations and during tunnel excavation for hard rock and soft ground applications. Utilizing multiple types of seismic signals produced by a TBM, drill, or impact breaker, the reflection of different velocity features are processed into a holographic image of the actual structure to be encountered. The Mill Creek Phase 3 alignment in Cleveland, Ohio, was imaged to define existing conditions along a 1,200-ft section of a proposed 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter CSO tunnel and, specifically, a zone of expected anomalous conditions where drilling was inconclusive. In Japan, Kajima Corporation used TRT™ to image a number of tunnels including the Fujikawa and Kanaya tunnels in a combination of methods to map structural features along the alignment.

Except in the case of a few metals—silicon, bismuth, cadmium, lead, zinc, and tin—an aluminum-rich compound is formed in each binary system, which forms a eutectic with the aluminum or its solid solution with this compound: Thus such compounds as FeAla, CuA12, Mg4Al3, and NiAls are formed, which are found in aluminum-rich alloys of their respective series as eutectics with the aluminum solid solution. These compounds are, in all cases, hard and brittle and their presence affects profoundly the physical properties of the alloys in which they occur. Within the zinc-aluminum system a compound, Al2Zn,, is formed that decomposes at lower temperatures. Silicon and tin each form a simple eutectiferous series with aluminum; bismuth, lead, and cadmium are only partly miscible in the liquid state with it. The Bureau of Mines investigated four simulated coal gob fires to obtain a more reliable data base for defining the state of a sealed mine fire and to evaluate the performance of various fire detectors. The fires were conducted in a multiple-entry section of the Bruceton Experimental Mine by heating 4,000 to 21,000 pounds of rubblized bituminous coal to ignition and monitoring the temperature, gas emissions, and smoke under ventilated and sealed combustion conditions. Product gas concentrations depended upon the coal bed size, coal temperature, heating rate, and oxygen concentration or ventilating condition but varied little after the fires were sealed. Expressions are given that define the temporal variation of CO and O2 after sealing when the coal temperature decreased rapidly. The CO/C02 ratio is a more sensitive fire indicator than the CO/?02 ratio, although the latter is universally used for detecting the incipient state of a coal fire. In comparison, the Jones-Trlckett ratio [ CO2 + ¾ CO ? ¼ H2 ?O2] is less reliable for this purpose. The best detector for determining the state of a mine fire after it has been sealed was a prototype submicrometer smoke particulate sensor. Limitations of the various detector systems are also discussed.

The next 13 years gave me an education that anyone, then or now, would well envy. W.T. Reid had founded Belmont School along the lines of Groton and, as at Groton, he sent many graduates to Harvard. He obtained excellent teachers and maintained as strict a discipline as the independent nature of the western students would stand. With a beautiful location in an unspoiled little valley in the foot- hills of the Coast Range there was every chance for walks and expeditions. The years at Belmont were good ones. My closest friends were Harold Jordan and Lewis Hackett. Lewis was son of the military director at the school. With half a dozen other very young inmates we early won the sobriquet of "The Dirty Dozen." Sliding down a steep muddy hill on barrel staves helped us earn the name. An inherited shyness exaggerated my sensitivity at being a "teacher's boy" and this prevented a close association with the wilder western boys who made up most of the schoolmates. Trapping wildcats and coyotes in the brush-covered hills and taking long walks gave me plenty to do. I had grown too fast and when I went to college was 6 ft 3 in. tall and weighed only 145 lb-hardly a respectable bean pole. I was only two months past 16 when I left for Harvard. The long summer vacations were happy ones. Most of them were spent in the high mountains, and even when I was ten years old I could keep up with anyone on long steep climbs. I learned to handle a rowboat during our stays at Lakeside, a rustic resort at the south- east corner of Lake Tahoe that could then be reached only by the steamer that made a dally trip around the Lake. Success in the use of the Eötvös torsion balance method of mapping geologic structure depends largely on the accuracy in the interpretation of the observed results. Skill in that interpretation depends (1) on the knowledge of the types of the variation of gravity, the gradient of gravity horizontally, and of the differential curvature produced by bodies of different sizes, shapes, dimensions, and densities; (2) on the knowledge of the possible types of structural bodies which might produce the observed anomalies; (3) on the empirical knowledge gained by experience not only in the geological interpretation of torsion balance surveys, hut of interpretations of inadequate geological data; and (4) on a knowledge of the possible and probable types of geologic structures in the area of the survey. The knowledge of the anomaly which a known body will produce and conversely the knowledge of the body or bodies which will produce a known anomaly may be gained by empirical experience and by mathematical study. The knowledge gained by empirical experience is fragmentary and inexact. The geology of most structures actually is known very superficially. The surface geology may be known accurately. If the structure is petroliferous, the subsurface geology of the oil field will be known down to 3000, 4000, 5000 ft. or in a few oil fields down to 7500 ft., but the deeper geology will be unknown and the metamorphic, igneous, or massive limestone basement below the reach of the drill may contrast sharply in density with the overlying sediments. Away from the oil field, the subsurface geology is known only from scattered drill holes, which do not go to the basement. A fair but not necessarily accurate knowledge of the geology of the nonproductive area can be obtained by correlation of the wells but the degree of its accuracy in general is proportional to the density of the occurrence of the wells. The geology below the bottom of the wells however is unknown. An anomaly mapped by the torsion balance is the sum of the effects of the contrasts in mass of its whole geologic surroundings. If the dimensions of a body of abnormal density are large enough, depth or distance makes no difference in the effects on the gradient and differential curvature; and as a matter of fact, in many places, the basement and irregulari-

Lime is one of the largest volume chemicals produced in the United States. In 1979 approximately 21 million tons were produced. Lime is, in fact, second only to sulfuric acid as the largest volume basic chemical produced. Lime, also known as quick lime (calcium oxide) and hydrate lime (calcium hydroxide), is the principle alkali used in a multitude of industrial processes. In addition to its use as a principle industrial alkali, lime has experienced dramatic growth in four general market areas during the past 30 years. These four areas are: 1. Water Treatment - Lime is used extensively in treating and purifying water for industrial and potable use, Although significant tonnage is shipped to this market of municipal and industrial water treatment plants, the end-users are widely spread geographically and individual shipments are relatively low tonnage. "Complex facilities which provide for the collection, management and treatment of effluents emanating from the Sullivan mine and concentrator tailings were made operational in October, 1979. Key features of the system are the use of upgraded tailings ponds for the storage of up to 800 million litres of metals-contaminated effluents, a treatment plant employing lime in a high density sludge process and a sludge-impoundment facility designed for maximum long-term environmental safety. The completed works are cap1ble of satisfying a difficult range of operating requirements imposed by highly variable weather conditions, drainage flows and soluble metals loadi11gs. Final capital expenditures for the project will approach $10 million and annual operating costs are estimated at $0.8 million.This paper discusses the Kimberley effluents treatment project and the major considerations in its development. The treatment process, major plant equipment and initial operating experience are also described."

It is increasingly evident that the excellence of blast-furnace operation to a great extent depends upon the preparation of the products fed into the furnace. The preparation of these products is carried on largely in the roasting and sintering departments. Prior to the building of flotation plants in Utah and other western states for the treatment of lead-zinc ores, the gravity concentrates received at the Midvale smelter amounted to about 4000 tons per month, containing 24 per cent. lead and 10 or 11 per cent. zinc. This product was about 20 mesh—that is, 45 per cent. of it would be plus 20 mesh and the balance minus 20 mesh. About 1000 tons of pyrite per month, containing 5 per cent. lead and 10 per cent. zinc, was also received. These products were sent to the multiple-hearth roasters for calcining, after which they were sent to the Dwight-Lloyd machines for sintering with other ores. The sintering charge passed over the machines but once. The first flotation products received consisted of a wet, sticky, muddy mass, containing a large amount of moisture, up to 19 or 20 per cent., and it was almost impossible to feed them with any degree of regularity, if at all, through our standard feeders; but the amount of flotation product received during the first year or so was relatively small and it virtually lost its identity by being mixed with a large amount of jig and table concentrates. As the quantity of flotation products increased, more efficient filtering was accomplished and the moisture greatly reduced. Flotation Products Received At the present time the Midvale plant receives about 4300 tons per month of flotation product running 60 per cent, lead and 4.5 per cent. zinc, 85 per cent. of which is minus 200 mesh and contains about 8 per cent, moisture; and 4000 tons per month of pyrite of similar fineness, running about 2 per cent. lead and 3.5 per cent. zinc, containing about 10 per cent, moisture. The lower moisture greatly reduces the difficulties of handling, making it possible to run a 100 per cent. flotation feed on a multiple-hearth furnace without serious mechanical troubles. The purpose of the study presented in this article is to establish a standard blast pattern to yield optimum blasting performance along with an attempt to reduce a difference between design and construction. A series of test blasts were carried out at two tunneling sites of Central Inland Highway crossing in Korea. Long-hole blasting was tested in rock mass whose RMR value is over 60.The blasting results were evaluated by measuring degree of fragmentation, advance rate,muckpile distribution, overbreak, etc. Based on the results of test blast, several patterns were proposed for a two-lane highway tunnel.

HIS note reports the existence of several new scandium intermetallic compounds of the A2B and AB stoichiometries where the A element is scandium and the B element is from group VIII or IB of the periodic table. Alloys were arc melted from high-purity materials using 2-g charges. Typical lot analyses for the materials used are given in Table I. Chemical analyses were not made on the alloys as there was little or no weight loss on melting. After annealing the specimens for 14 days at 600°C and water quenching, metallographic and X-ray techniques were used to determine the occurrence of the various phases. Table II lists the relevant data for the A2B phases. The Ti2Ni structure,2 has ninety-six atoms in a face-centered cubic cell, whilst the Al2Cu structure is body-centered tetragonal.3 The occurrence and stability of the various A2B type phases in transition metal alloy systems has recently been considered by Nevitt.4 The Ti2 Ni-type phases occur over a relatively narrow range of radius ratios from 1.14-1.26 with A partners mainly from the titanium group and B partners predominantly from the cobalt group. This suggests that both a favorable relative size of the atoms and a favorable electron concentration are necessary conditions for the existence of this structure type. A12Cu-type phases involving Ti group elements as A partners are formed with B partners from the cobalt and nickel groups, predominantly the latter, and have a higher radius ratio (1.27-1.29) than the Ti2Ni-type phases. The occurrence of both Sc2Pd and Sc2Co can be rationalized in terms of these considerations but SczNi is anomalous because of its high radius ratio. The radius ratios are calculated from the Goldschmidt CN12 radii and it might be postulated that the scandium atom is reduced in size in the compound. Unfortunately the apparent atomic size of scandium in the compound cannot be calculated from a knowledge of the structure and lattice dimensions. The crystal structure of the Sc2Au compound could not be identified from the powder diffraction pattern, but it is interesting to note that it is isostructural with a series of A2Au phases where A is a rare earth element.5 Pertinent information concerning the AB phases found in this investigation is given in Table 111. All the phases have the ordered bcc CsCl structure. The occurrence and stability of CsC1-type phases have recently been discussed by Dwight,7 who concludes that the relative sizes of the atoms do not appear to be a controlling factor (the radius ratios of all the known phases vary between 0.985 and 1.439) but that the occurrence of the phase is predominantly dependent on the relative positions of the A and B partners in the periodic table. As a measure of the stability of a given CsCl phase it has been customary to define a lattice contraction on alloying, DAB — dAB, where DAB is the AB interatomic spacing as calculated from the Goldschmidt CN8 radii and dAB is the AB interatomic distance in the compound (= v3/2 ao). Values of the parameter DscB -dScB for the compounds found in this investigation are given in column 5 of Table III and are plotted in Fig. 1. If the lattice contraction does in fact reflect the stability of a phase then Fig. 1 shows two very interesting trends when the position of the B partner in the periodic table is considered. Firstly, within any given group the stability increases in order on going from the first to third long period. Secondly, within any given period the stability increases in order as the B partner is taken from the copper, nickel, and cobalt groups. In this study, flotation tests were performed to investigate behavior of enargite and chalcopyrite ores from different sources synthetically mixed for separation of enargite. Flotation parameters including; pH, reagents concentration and type and flotation time were controlled to obtain an enargite concentrate with high As and chalcopyrite concentrate and final tailings with As content below 0.5 mass%. The copper ore bearing enargite mineral contained 5.87 mass% As and 16.50 mass% Cu while the chalcopyrite bearing ore contained 0.32 mass% As and 21.63 mass% Cu. The two ore samples were mixed at 7:3 (enargite: chalcopyrite) by weight ratio to prepare a mixed ore sample with arsenic content at 3.16 mass% and 18.25 mass% Cu for the flotation study. For enargite single ore flotation, the 38?75 µm size fraction showed that over 98% enargite was selectively recovered within 5 min at slurry pH of 4.0 and arsenic content in the final tailings was reduced to 0.22 mass%. In mix ore (enargite+chalcopyrite) flotation, 97% of enargite was first removed at pH 4 followed by chalcopyrite flotation at pH 8, and over 95% recovery was achieved in 15 min flotation time. Arsenic content in the final tailings was reduced to 0.1 mass%.

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high LOI fly ash. Previous reports of utilizing froth flotation to achieve selective separations required long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address both of these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash; low LOI ash and a high carbon product suitable for reburning or further upgrading. A process flowsheet and description are presented.

Microwave (MW) energy has been used widely for several decades for communications, food processing, wood drying, vulcanization of rubber and medical therapy. Recently, this technology was found to be capable of successfully sintering ceramic and metallic powder materials, with the advantages of reducing soaking times and sintering temperatures. Unlike conventional heating, MW radiation works through the absorption of the microwave energy by a material placed in an electromagnetic field within the microwave cavity. A far more efficient heating process is produced due to the unique ability of microwaves in selectively heating a pecific part of the material with desirable dielectrical properties. This exploratory research was initiated with the objective of locally sintering the thermal barrier coating of gas turbine components using MW radiation. This novel technique may allow repairing of the component without subjecting the entire piece to unnecessary elevated temperatures and reduction of process time and cost. Y ttria stabilized zirconia was used in this study and sintering was conducted using a multimodal 1.2 kW microwave facility. Three configurations of heating setup were experimented and the preliminary results will be discussed in this paper.

THE production of crude oil in Wyoming rose to 44,290,010 bbl. in 1923 and declined, during 1924, to 39,295,030 bbl., a decrease of about 11 per cent. The Salt Creek field supplies 75 to 80 per cent. of the production. Pipeline runs from the Salt Creek field reached a maximum in November, 1923, at a daily average for the month of 116,437 barrels. During 1924, the gas pressure in Salt Creek has declined rapidly and the production dropped to about 60,000 bbl. per day. Part of 'the decline during the last few months was due to lack of power to pump the wells. The electric-power plant of the Midwest Refining Co. did not begin to deliver current until the middle of December, by which time several hundred wells were off production. The cold snap in December, which brought, the temperature down to 30° below zero on the 17th, tied up operations almost completely and the average production for the month was only 49,545 barrels. As more wells are being pumped and the number of dead wells reduced, the production is rising and was up to 61,000 bbl. during the last week of January. A further increase is expected as the weather becomes warmer. The production of Salt Creek, by months, during 1924 is given in Table 1. The Lo Aguirre ore deposit of Sociedad Minera Pudahuel is expected to have a life of 12 years, producing 16,500 mt per year of copper cathodes. The total copper content of the ore ranges from 2% in acid-soluble form to 2% as sulfides. Sociedad Minera Pudahuel chose TL leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning as the processing steps to give low investment and operating costs. Design and operating criteria of the TL leach plant have been obtained in an experimental program carried out since 1974. Bench scale tests indicated that 90% of the oxidic copper and 35% of the sulfidic copper could be extracted to give 5 gpl copper by treating crushed ore with acid, curing, and rinsing in a column with a dilute acid solution containing ferric sulfate which is requllred to solubilize the sulfides. These results were verified in a pilot plant which combined leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. Raffinate was recycled to the leaching circuit after oxidation to regenerate ferric ion. Refinements in the processing have resulted in significant improvements in extraction to give 95% to 98% recovery of the oxidic copper and 55% and 60% of the sulfidic copper. The plant is expected to give this degree of recovery. As a consequence, the original plan to include a concentrator in the plant has been abandoned.

The exposures resulting from development work, following on the discovery of a new shoot of hIgh grade ore at the north end of the Sardine tin mine, during 1952, have provided an unusual opportunity to study the oxidation of a stannite-rich ore. Through the kindness of C. C. Morton, Chief Government Geologist of Queensland, an exactly located suite of specimens representative of the exposures was supplied by J. and W. Reddie. This was later supplemented by a number of specimens culled from a parcel ofrepresentative ore submitted to the Melbourne Ore Dressing Laboratory for testing.The Sardine tin mine, near Ewan, Queensland, has been the outstanding producer of the Kangaroo Hills Mineral Field. Since its discovery in 1918, up to 1952 it has yielded about 1,500 tons of cassiterite concentrates, and about 85 tons of stannite concentrates. The outcrop ore averaged 35% tin oxide, but the grade declined with increasing depth, and by 1930 had fallen to 7% tin oxide. In the northern section of the mine the ore shoots show a downward passage to complex primary s.ulphide ore, containing cassiterite and abundant stannite.The orebodies occur in a series of fissures in a crushed zone about 50 ft. wide in slates and quartzites that have been intruded by granite (Connah, 1952). In considering so complex a process as the smelting of iron in the blast furnace, there is obviously no single method of calculating efficiency that gives a complete appraisal of the performance of the furnace in all its several functions; such a comprehensive view as is required to evaluate producing ability and manufacturing costs for a given furnace is obtained only by considering a group of efficiencies, each of which measures the performance of the furnace from a specific point of view. For instance, there is the rate of consumption of coke per ton of iron produced, which is probably the most frequently considered, and is certainly one of the most important of the group; there is the efficiency of recovery of iron charged; and there is the efficiency of utilization of energy, both chemical and thermal, in some respects related to the former two yet in other ways independent of either. In each of these cases, the calculation can be made on the basis of the actual input of material or energy, or it may be based upon a comparison with the minimum amount of material or energy that would be required by a "perfect" furnace; that is, an imaginary ideal furnace analogous to the perfect steam engine used in thermodynamic calculations, when this furnace is operating under optimum conditions. Moreover, the furnace itself can be considered either as an apparatus for smelting iron or, taking a somewhat less common point of view, as a gas producer yielding iron and slag as by-products. Some of these efficiencies are more useful than others, yet all are instructive; for a knowledge of them not only leads to good engineering practice from the standpoint of control but also discloses limits to possible improvement in performance and indicates the lines along which improvement is most likely to be profitable. Estimates of some of these efficiencies have appeared from time to time in the literature, but many of them are open to objection because they are based on data of uncertain accuracy or because they have been caleulated without due regard to the thermodynamic principles involved. Moreover, so far as the author is aware. no general survey of the blast furnace comparing its performance in all the aspects mentioned has been made.
