Coal bumps remain one of the industry?s most devastating but least understood phenomena. If changes to the internal conditions of the rock mass could be observed there is hope that bumps could be forecasted. Seismic tomography has been used over the past 25 years in an attempt to image these changing conditions in the vicinity of the longwall face. This paper describes the history and practical considerations of using seismic tomography in bump-prone coal mines. The implementation of seismic tomography at six different longwall mines will be described along with lessons learned. Early studies used mining independent sources of seismic energy, including explosives and sledgehammers. Subsequently more operator friendly sources, such as the mining equipment itself and mining-induced seismicity, were used. Seismic energy sensors have been placed in gateroads and on the surface above the mine. Each of these configurations has associated advantages and disadvantages. Although the results obtained have been encouraging, the application of seismic tomography to monitoring a bump-prone longwall face is still immature. The ultimate goal of clearly imaging changing stress conditions in the longwall panel in a manner that does not inhibit mining operation is still distant, yet drawing nearer. When this goal is achieved, the industry will have a capable tool for identifying locations where bumps are imminent.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

The exclusion of coal fly ash from regulation as a hazardous waste has led to increased interest in returning ash to the coalfields for co-disposal. A multi-year column study used coal refuse with high potential acidity (4% total-S), and two alkaline ashes in various bulk-blends. The unamended refuse acidified rapidly, producing acidic (pH 1.7) leachates, high in dissolved metals. Treatments blended with sufficiently high amounts (20 to 33%) of alkaline ash produced alkaline (pH >8.4) leachates with low metal levels, while lower ash blending rates acidified over time to produce metalliferous leachates. Examination of solid materials indicated that pyrite oxidation was occurring to some extent in all treatments. A regression equation (r2 = 0.95) was developed to estimate time to net acid release for mixtures of these materials. Ash alkalinity and refuse potential acidity must be balanced to insure water quality for co-disposal environments, or the ash materials should be isolated away from acidic drainage waters.

"Various theoretical and experimental techniques used to search and develop new metal hydride systems suitable for hydrogen storage are described. The main theoretical technique under study makes the use of electronic structure of the candidate materials. Microstructural characterization techniques like transmission electron microscopy are being used to study the hydride formation. Novel processing techniques for material preparation such as those needed to produce thin films or amorphous phases are also being utilized. The techniques are illustrated with results from Pd, FeTi and Mg2Ni systems.IntroductionOf the four methods of hydrogen storage, compressed gas, cryogenic liquid, metal hydrides, and gas-solid adsorption, the metal hydride storage method is more attractive from the point of view of high volumetric density and safety. Compressed gas storage has disadvantages of extreme pressure, weight, and volume requirements, whereas storage of hydrogen as cryogenic liquid is unattractive due to the requirements of extremely low temperatures and high consumption of primary energy. Moreover, the number hydrogen atoms present in a volume of 10- 22 Cm3 (nH) in liquid hydrogen state (- 20K) is 4.2 whereas number of hydrogen atoms that can be accommodated in a free volume of 10-22 cm3 of various hydrides are as follows: LiH--5.9, TiH2--9.2, ZrH2--9.2, VH2--l0.2. High hydrogen concentration is usually associated with a large H/Metal atomic ratio but is also a function of structure."

In the course of an integrated airborne survey in 1975, a uranium-molybdenum deposit was discovered by Minatome Australia Pty Limited in North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70 km by road west of Townsville.The mineralization occurs in a welded tuff unit within the Carboniferous St James Vokanics. It is structurally controlled by a complex of subvertical east-west fractures and is exposed over a strike length of 350 m. Drilling has traced a further 150 m extension underneath a barren capping consisting of a thick pile of vokano-sediments. The maximum width of the orebody is 150 m, and its vertical thickness is approximately 100 m.The primary ore minerals are coffinite, pitchblende and molybdenite, accompanied by various alteration products (particularly uranium molybdates).The vein-type mineralization is considered epigenetic.A comprehensive program of surface drilling and underground exploration is in progress to establish the uranium and molybdenum reserves.

Newmont Australia is the operator of the Mt Leyshon mine near Charters Towers, Queensland. Mt Leyshon is an open cut gold mine, which processed on average 5.0 Mt of ore and produced up to 250 000 ounces of gold per year. Mining was completed in early-2001, followed by treatment of low-grade ore stockpiles for a further 12 months. Approximately 250 ha of waste rock dumps have been rehabilitated. Rehabilitation of two of the three tailings storage facilities (TSF) has been completed and the third is in progress. A field performance monitoring system that includes an automated meteorological station, large-scale lysimeters (measurement of net percolation), and in situ moisture content sensors (measurement of moisture storage changes in the cover material) were installed to monitoring performance of the cover systems placed on the waste storage facilities. This paper focuses on the installation and calibration of the in situ moisture monitoring system. The moisture monitoring system provides automated detailed in situ volumetric water content data above and within the large-scale lysimeters. A portable unit that provides spatial in situ moisture content measurements at additional locations on the cover system is also utilised. The paper will focus on installation and calibration of the in situ water content monitoring instrument in the waste rock, coarse cover material, and fine textured cover materials of the tailings facility and waste rock dump cover systems.

An extensive program for the establishment of creep data on high-nickel alloys has been in progress during the past seven years. This paper presents the accumulated data on two solid solution alloys, cold-drawn, annealed Monel and cold-drawn, annealed Inconel. Data on these two alloys in other conditions will be published at a later date. Monel, a nickel-copper alloy, is normally considered a corrosion-resistant material, but it will be shown that it also has considerable creep strength, validating its use at temperatures up to and including 900°F. Inconel, a nickel-chromium-iron alloy, is definitely a heat-resisting alloy possessing good creep strength and oxidation resistance up to iiooOF., and because of its oxidization resistance has been used successfully at much higher temperatures for lightly stressed parts. The literature contains but meager data on the creep properties of high-nickel alloys. Howevcr, Bennett and McAdam have presented a substantial quantity of creep data for cold-drawn Monel.1 The material as tested was not representative of mill production for it was cold-drawn to a reduction of area of 40 per cent as against 13 per cent, which is the mill standard for Monel. Twenty-two individual tests were run on each alloy in the investigation described in the following pages. The data and curves presented herein represent an integration of all the tests to obtain the most accurate picture of the creep properties of these alloys. Neither of the two alloys was found to be embrittled by the combination of temperature and stress, as evaluated by room-temperature tensile and impact tests that were made following creep testing. These data indicate that no tendency toward embrittlement exists. It is recommended that 6300 lb. per sq. in. be used as a working stress for cold-drawn, annealed Monel at 900°F. and 13,200 lb. per sq. in. for cold-drawn, annealed Inconel at the same temperature. Table 8 lists recommended working stresses, based on 80 per cent of the stress to produce a minimum creep rate of 0.01 per cent per 1000 hr., for Monel and some steels. Equipment The equipment used for these tests consists of Colville creep-testing machines manufactured by the Tinius Olsen Testing Machine Co. The load is adjusted, depending on the stress level, to give an error in the stress of not more than ± 0.1 per cent. This is based on considerations of lever sensitivity and the stress used for the standard (A.S.T.M. Tentative Standard E22-38T) 0.505-in. diameter creep specimen having a 2-in. gauge length. This is a new era for the minerals industry. Never before has there been more need for effective communication. So said Robert Anderson, chairman and chief executive officer of Hanna Mining Co. He was speaking to the American Mining Congress's Communication Workshop. The question is whether there is enough industry concern to meet the challenge. Anderson observed that increased workshop attendance, in continuing tough times, reflects the industry's concern for communication. But, why were students, faculty, engineers, supervisors, and managers not at the conference? Communication applies to every manager, Anderson said. But he was the only operating manager present. And only one company sent operating supervisors. The remaining conference participants were public relations personnel, generally with nonmining backgrounds. And the program dealt mostly with public relations issues. Role of Communication in the Minerals Industry. It is well known that the minerals industry faces economic, political, and social problems. Economic shifts and foreign competition have created an international minerals industry and an international marketplace. This, in turn, calls for worldwide communication. Other factors effecting communication are: • Governmental protectionism as well as regulatory reforms call for increased interaction with governing officials. • Changing social values have created environmental issues and anti-industry attitudes. This intensifies the need for improved public relations. • Traditional work values are shifting towards self-actualization and humanistic movements. The work force is better educated and more informed. Employees demand more satisfaction, equality, and job autonomy. • The mining industry's task of managing its human resources is complicated by layoffs, job uncertainties, and bleak outlooks concerning employee morale and motivation. Technology and Information for a New Era As noted, this is a new communications era, one propelled by technology and information. Technology has led to reduced demand for raw materials by developing substitutes. Copper demand, for example, will never fully recover. Copper cables are replaced by fiberoptics; copper transmission lines, with aluminum. Technology has shifted the US from traditional to high tech and service industries. The speed, frequency, and scope of information transmission have greatly increased. But the most significant characteristic of this information is not the pace of advancing technology. It is the dramatic increase in the importance and frequency of our personal transactions. Knowledge has replaced raw materials and capital as the strategic resource. Information has replaced energy as the transforming resource. And the game against nature has become an interpersonal game (D. Bell, Post-industrial society, Physics Today, '76). In Megatrends, John Naisbitt says that information will soon double every 20 months. So, professionals will become "information workers." And communication will be the life channel of the information age. Thomas Wolfe said you can't go home again. Hanna Anderson said we are, indeed, facing a new day. It will never again be "business as usual." We must move into the information age with the rest of society. We cannot trust that the world will continue to rely on our products. Nor can we place the responsibility and control for problems and solutions outside the minerals industry. Improved communication is not a panacea. But, Anderson said, it is critical to the minerals industry. What is Communication? The word communication is overused. It is applied to every aspect of our lives. Satirist Tom Lehrer got sick of hearing about the need to communicate. He said, "It seems to me that if someone is having all that trouble communicating, the very least he can do is shut up!" Obviously, we cannot follow that advice (though we might wish that some others would do so). Communication is always going on. It is inevitable. Yet we have many misconceptions about com-

In a marked departure from conventional practice, the Power Plate process combines the two unit operations of leaching and electrowinning into a single continuous step for direct recovery of copper from sulfide concentrates, cement copper, copper scrap, and copper oxide slurries. Considering how environmental controls are pre- venting development of smelters for additional capacity or new construction, the Power Plate process provides a welcome pollution-free alternative to the smelting-electrorefining routes. And its low capital investment and low operating costs also recommend it to copper producers who are now using or investigating various hydrometallurgical methods.

Recent data indicate a marginal decline in overall growth in world economic output from 3.1% in 1985 to 2.9% in 1986 (table 1),2, 3 Many nations experienced slower economic growth because of the huge trade imbalances existing between the United [ ] States and Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany, the U.S. budget deficit, and the growing Third World debt. Some developing nations, however, experienced booming growth. Declining prices for energy and nonenergy commodities and the fall of the dollar against the currencies of major industrial countries benefited several developing countries--energy importers and exporters of manufactured goods with currencies tied to the U.S. dollar, which were able to expand markets in the industrialized nations. The drop in commodity prices increased demand in industrial countries and depressed it in developing countries. Lower demand in the developing countries contributed to a decline in the real net exports from industrial countries. As a result, output growth in industrial countries declined from 3.0% in 1985 to 2.4% in 1986, despite growing internal demand, Average output growth of developing countries increased from 3.296 to 3.596 during the same period, however, primarily because of the low prices of their products and the strength of demand in industrial countries for those products. Developed country output growth was extremely uneven, however. For example, the economic output of nonfuel exporters grew 5.4% in 1986, while that of fuel exporters dropped 0.7%.

As openpit copper operations transition from surface mines to underground, the speed of underground infrastructure construction prior to production is critical for maximizing the value of the project. Typically, the preferred underground bulk mining method is block caving. In preparation for future underground projects, Rio Tinto made the strategic decision to invest in a step-change program that would develop system solutions to reduce the construction time of block caves. The program focused on improving safety and doubling or more the construction speed of both vertical shafts and horizontal infrastructure compared to existing drill-and-blast rates. After an extensive selection process, Rio Tinto selected the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine as one of the concepts to proceed with for construction of horizontal infrastructure for access and footprint. In addition to un-derground drilling and hauling equipment, Atlas Copco?s Robbins mobile miner concept (a previous attempt at horizontal mechanical excavation) completed trials at Mount Isa, Pasminco and Taisei. Rio Tinto selected the new Atlas Copco mobile miner machine concept for a number of reasons including the use of proven technology from the three previous mobile miner machines and other commercial products, as well as the ability to install complete ground support typical with high rock stress conditions at approximately 1,500 to 2,000 m (4,900 to 6,500 ft) depth. Atlas Copco, with support from Rowa, the Swiss company that specializes in back up systems for tunnel boring machines (TBM), is advancing the detail design of the access version of a tunneling system on behalf of Rio Tinto. Because of the different requirements between an excavation system for access tunnels and that for tunnels on the footprint, two different versions of the mobile miner machine technology were envisioned. The access and the footprint versions of the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine share a majority of key technologies and systems. Therefore, it was possible to conduct a performance conformation test using a full-scale version of the access machine that would also mitigate the technical risks for the footprint version. The Kumera Technology Center developed a unique type of steam dryer for drying copper concentrate in the mid 1990s. The dryer has been chosen in several copper smelter projects since 1999. To expand production capacities, the Norddeutsche Affinerie smelter, the Pirdop smelter of Cumerio, the Toyo smelter of Sumitomo Metal Mining and the Tamano smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting have carried out projects in which Kumera Steam Dryers were installed. The capacity of a single steam dryer varies from 70 t/h to 160 t/h. This article summarizes the latest operation results of the Kumera Steam Dryers in these smelters and introduces the progress of the ongoing projects in Yanggu Xiangguang Copper, Guixi smelter of Jiangxi Copper, Jinlong Copper, Boliden Harjavalta, and Onsan smelter of LS-Nikko Copper.

Utah has produced about 31.7 kt (1 billion oz) of silver, more than any state in the United States except Idaho. Several high-grade ore systems in Utah, where the mines are now closed, occur within large polymetallic limestone-hosted districts related to plutonic complexes. These mines fed several major lead smelters for nearly a century. Interaction of magmatic chloride-rich fluids with carbonate rocks localized significant bonanzas within these districts. A low sulfidation state was produced in the fluids by their passage through limestones. The Bingham openpit mine has also yielded more byproduct silver than other porphyry copper-molybdenum-gold systems. Away from exposed intrusive rocks, some large silver-only systems occur in Mesozoic sandstone and in caldera-related veins in volcaniclastic rocks. Thick permeable latest-Proterozoic basement metaquartzite sequences present beneath western Utah may have been important, as perhaps they were in the Coeur d'Alene district of Idaho, in providing chloride and silver-rich ore fluids. However, it is clear that specific Tertiary magmatic events played an essential role in the evolution of the Utah silver-rich metallogenic province. The largest silver districts in the state are genetically related to Tertiary porphyritic plutonic rocks.

The long term management of acid generating tailings at mine closure is a common issue, however, management of ARD is significantly impacted by local conditions, including climate. Acid generating tailings, over time, will produce acid rock drainage (ARD) if left exposed to water and air, which both contribute to the sulphide oxidation process. The long term closure of tailings storage areas is a concern from both environmental and engineering perspectives, with long term acid generation and dam stability the main risks. Several approaches can be taken to minimize ARD from tailings facilities using cover systems. Three tailings facility cover case histories, in areas of net positive water balances, were investigated using unsaturated flow modelling software to determine the long term potential for limiting ARD by increasing saturation of the tailings and decreasing oxygen ingress. Each case study demonstrates the importance of integrating the tailings dam engineering into tailings cover closure design. Model predictions are compared to measured saturation levels to assess the accuracy of the calculations.

Open stoping dimensions are typically controlled by a number of factors including production drilling capacity, scheduling, fill constraints, orebody dimensions and host wall rock conditions. Frequently host wall rock conditions are the key control on stope dimensions. As a new mine is brought into production, there is a steep geotechnical learning curve for those associated with the development of the mine. Initially, the experience and observations gained at other mines is used to guide the stope design. As experience is gained at the new operation, site specific techniques can be validated for use. This has been the case at BHP Cannington, where a heavy emphasis has been placed on the validation of empirical stope stability techniques for site specific conditions and experience. A range of empirical and numerical techniques can be applied during the design of open stopes. The empirical techniques are an experience based application of known performance levels during the design of open stopes. The numerical modelling and structural tools can be used to compliment the empirical techniques so that an understanding can be gained of the likely stress and structurally controlled failure mechanisms.

The first 0.7 m3 (1 cu yd) diesel load- haul-dump vehicle (LHD) arrived at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD in I969 to muck a ventilation drift. Others soon followed. Mechanization has subsequently changed stoping methods, manpower requirements, ventilation practice, the definition of minable reserves, and it has impacted safety and health. These have all had a direct bearing on the economics of producing gold ore from deep underground. Mechanized mining Before mechanization, production quotas at Homestake were met by several open cut-and-fill (OCF) mining methods. OCF mining relied on jackleg and wagon drilling, electric and compressed air slushing and cribbed raises brought up through the fill. Even square- set stoping was used until about eight years ago. The mine became 100% mechanized in 1988. The two current stoping methods are mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR). In 1992, MCF accounted for 54’S, VCR for 44% and development/uphole for 2% of the 1.4 Mt (1.55 million st) of underground ore produced. These methods are typically ramp- based and use diesel-powered LHDs, trucks, pneumatic drill jumbos and utility vehicles. Electric LHDs and rubber-tired compressed air muckers have also been used in VCR scrams. Pfarr (1991) and Mitchell (1980) provide good overviews of current production methods.

The sampling of cathodes has changed with the introduction of the ISA-process in copper refineries. A Jernkontoret joint working group of refineries and rod plants from both primary and recycled copper plants has been investigating whether the actual sampling of cathodes is representative for this type of cathodes. As a first stage, samples were sent to the members of the working group with the objective to find an easy basis for a comparison of the results of the next stages. All samples show the same tendency for nearly all elements. In some cases, there may exist differences in calibration and for some elements the detection limits are too high, especially when Optical Spectrometry is used. In the second stage, discs were compared with melted samples to answer the question whether the punching of discs is sufficient for the quality control of the cathode. The analyses of the discs represent fairly well the cathode quality. There are differences between cathodes from different crops. Three punches are sufficient to determine the cathode quality. Finally, samples from various lots of cathodes were compared with samples from the rod produced from these cathodes. The impurity content of the rod corresponds to the impurity content of the cathode.
