The Midnite Mine is an inactive, hard-rock uranium mine in Stevens County, WA. Oxidation of sulfide-containing minerals, primarily pyrite, in the ore body produces large quantities of acidic water. An interception system installed by the mining company limits the discharge of contaminated water from the mine. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have been actively involved in planning remediation of the disturbed areas. To assist in remediation, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) initiated research to determine water quality and to define ground water flow characteristics. USBM personnel designed a monitoring network, supervised installation of sampling wells, and collected and analyzed water samples. This Report of Investigations describes interpretation of data collected between December 1989 and April 1992. The computer program WATEQ4F was used to identify aqueous species distribution and to calculate potential solid phase controls of solubility. To assist in interpretation of changes in water quality between sampling locations and to develop models describing proposed flow paths, the computer program BALANCE was used. Using output from these programs and field observations, a description of the chemistry along proposed ground water flow paths at the mine is presented.

Preliminary work in the investigation of electrolytic manganese, as reported4/, showed promise for a practical procedure of continuous production. Laboratory work was continued in the direction of process simpliication to determine an economically feasible procedure that would require a minimum of expensive equipment for plant erection and a minimum of reagent consumption for operation. Results furnished enough evidence to indicate that modifications of the process could be made leading to simplified procedure and with no sacrifice in operating efficiency. A supply of at least 200 pounds of the metal was desired for alloy research, and it was believed worth while to utilize available facilities in a search for difficulties that were not encountered in the laboratory and that might arise in larger-scale operation. Consequently, an experimental pilot plant was erected. The plant was designed for a capacity of 15 pounds per day of metal and operated under simulated plant practice.

A project aimed at blast optimisation for large open pit coal mines is utilising blast monitoring and analysis techniques, advanced dragline monitoring equipment, and blast simulation software, to assess the major controlling factors affecting both blast performance and subsequent dragline productivity. This has involved collaborative work between the explosives supplier, mine operator, monitoring equipment manufacturer, and a mining research organisation.

"INTRODUCTION Mica is found in Georgia from the Fall Line in the central part of the State to the Valley and Ridge Province in the northwest. During the past 3 years, Georgia has been one of the chief producers of dielectric mica in the United States. Since January 1945, when prices were reduced, mining has decreased until practically no sheet mica is being recovered at present.The main mica-bearing regions in the State may be classified into three districts: The Thomaston district comprising Upson, Lamar, and Monroe Counties; the Ball Ground district, comprising Cherokee and Pickens Counties; and the Hartwell district, comprising Hart and Elbert Counties. There are numerous mines and prospects in all of these districts. All have been visited from time to time by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and by members of the Federal Geological Survey. The Federal Survey has made detailed maps and reports on all of the most important ones.This report will deal with five of these properties on which the Bureau of Mines has diamond-drilled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Division, I. B. Classical acid-base accounting using modified Sobek titration methods has resulted in interpretation of results for materials with neutralization potential (NP) less than 20 tons of CaCO3/1000 tons of material (2% CaCO3) as "uncertain" due to lack of sensitivity within that content range. Standardization of a "fizzless" acid neutralization potential (ANP) method was undertaken in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International using two ranges of sulfuric acid additions based on reaction pH and carbonate carbon estimates rather than subjective fizz testing as well as hydrogen peroxide additions to correct for mineral acidity. The method is identified as the acid neutralization potential acidity (ANPA) titration method. During interlaboratory testing a positive bias was discovered within the "uncertain" range which was further investigated and resolved by increasing the test sample weight from one to five grams for samples needing improved accuracy in materials with ANP <2% CaCO3. Test results from the interlaboratory testing of the low range method is presented and compared with the results from the original ANPA method in the paper.

Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a non-incendive, cylindrically-shaped explosive charge that will not ignite gassy or dusty atmospheres, even methane-laden air. How It Works Firing unconfined explosive charges in underground mines is prohibited by law since detonation in gassy or dusty atmospheres is extremely dangerous. However, there are advantages in using unconfined charges from both a safety and a production standpoint. The present contribution examines the main components of a sustainable land reclamation program applicable to surface coal mines and the environmental threats that hinder the transition to sustainable land management. It compares the main ?waste streams? that cause adverse impacts to the environment with the so-called ?best available technologies and managing practices? that are proposed by organisations with high expertise in land management. Also, it addresses the environmental and socio-economic indicators that should be monitored in order to assess the results of the land management program and to allow remedial actions and continuous improvement. Based on the Greek lignite mines experience in land reclamation, this paper presents the common weaknesses of the land management programmes and proposes an improved communication scheme that moves things towards sustainability. This scheme is based on a more rational exploitation of the available economic resources and a constructive dialog between the mining companies, the local authorities, the state institutions and other stakeholders.

The heat of formation of vanadium trichloride was determined at 298.15° K. Measurements were made in a solution calorimeter in which an aqueous hydrochloric acid-potassium dichromate solvent was employed. Data are presented for the heats of solution of vanadium trichloride and the vanadium trioxide "backup" compound, and for appropriate dilution reactions needed to preserve stoichiometry. The resulting heat of formation of vanadium trichioride (VCI3) at 298.15° K was found to be ?H°298.15° K = -138.89 ±0.37 kcal/g mole.

Bingham Canyon lies in the heart of the Oquirrh Mountains, 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. In it is located the world&apos;s largest open-pit copper mine, owned and operated by the Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation. From the beginning of open pit mining operations in 1906 until 1963, the pit haulage, or materials transportation, was primarily by rail. In 1963, phase-in of a truck haulage system in the upper two-thirds of the pit was begun. The details of that conversion, its associated problems and the resulting pit operation have been covered in an earlier paper.1 The purpose of this paper is to discuss various factors for consideration in transportation system selection, and to discuss some of the alternatives considered prior to making the change from rail haulage to truck haulage for a portion of Bingham Canyon.

THE mine and concentrator of the Howe Sound Co., Chelan Division, are at Holden, in a remote section of the Cascade Mountains of northwestern Washington. Holden is at an elevation of 3200 ft., in the narrow valley of Railroad Creek. This creek drains into Lake Chelan, at a point some 40 miles up the lake from the town of Chelan. The concentrator treats 2000 to 2500 tons of low-grade copper-gold-zinc ore per day. Concentration is achieved by the differential flotation process, with recovery of 94 per cent copper and 82 per cent gold in the copper concentrate, followed by the recovery of 65 to 70 per cent zinc in the zinc flotation circuit. The final flotation tailing is deslimed, and coarse sands, representing 60 to 70 per cent of the total, are cyanided. The tonnage of tailing material amounts to 1900 to 2370 tons per day. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The property is within the Chelan National Forest. Railroad Creek is a fishing stream, being stocked regularly with trout from State hatcheries. Consequently, in planning a milling operation, the Howe Sound Co. was obliged to avoid any pollution of the stream by tailing material, and also destruction of valuable stands of timber. Moreover, the selected tailing disposal sites should not mar the natural beauty of the valley. In addition to these requirements, the problem of tailing disposal at Holden was complicated by topography and climatic conditions. The valley is long and narrow, averaging 1200 to 1500 ft. in width. Its walls are flaring at a steep angle. There are no extensive flat areas suitable for deposition of tailing. All valleys tributary to Railroad Creek, also the well-marked paths of snowslides, must be avoided. Finally, the direction of prevailing winds and possible dust hazard arising therefrom dictated the necessity of selecting the tailing-disposal sites downstream from the mill building and two campsites. Heavy snowfall during the winter months of November to March, inclusive, impedes building of the retaining dike, making it necessary to prepare the needed storage space during the summer months. It is inadvisable, also, to do any dike building during the freezing weather, because the dike becomes unstable with the spring thaws, producing inevitable "sloughing" of the built-up borders. TAILING-DISPOSAL SITES The existing tailing-disposal areas are near the south wall of the valley. They were developed, and put to use in the following sequence: No. I. Area.-Covers approximately 10 acres. Built up to the height of 60 ft.

Our aim in this project was to develop a new copper refining technology utilizing pyrometallurgical treatment and a raw materials preparation technique. In the recycling process; raw material is not an idealized concentrate of copper sulfide but is composed of various types of scrap, industrial wastes such as sludge, ash and slag, and municipal wastes. Since we cannot expect oxidation heat in this process as in sulfide smelting, organic materials are viewed as an alternative energy source. Quality of the copper produced is targeted as 99.99% and an intermediate grade will also be marketable. To benefit the plant, rare metals and other nonferrous metals will also be recovered The overall system is described in this paper, specific topics outlined and preliminary research presented. Current Japanese technology for recycling copper based materials is briefly reviewed.

Long-term coal mining plans are often based on attainment of an average cost of coal. This is achieved by blending low- and high-cost coal production. Coal that is beyond the economic limit of the reserve is mined in a misguided effort to improve reserve recovery. Long-term contracts should be least cost-based and generate the best net present value from the economic reserve within the context of a rational mine plan. The selected economic reserve should he mined on a low- to high-cost basis to benefit from the time value of money.

This paper discusses the social and economic impact of mining, and in particular goldmining, on New Zealand. The range of topics covered and their complexity has confined us in this paper to highlighting the main points of concern û a detailed report is under preparation. A major problem in undertaking this study was the lack of hard data on important environmental, economic and social issues and if there is to be effective planning in the area of natural resource use this situation must be rectified. The following conclusions were drawn: Goldmining was very important in shaping New Zealand&apos;s early social and economic development, providing wealth, employment and impetus for social change.Foreign investment and technology has been an essential element in New ZealandÆs economic development.Mining is a small industry at present by this must not be allowed to obscure its potential to broaden New Zealand&apos;s economic base and provide foreign exchange.With modern methods, development of mineral resources and environmental protection are not incompatible but certain unique and irreplaceable areas must be preserved.There are problems in evaluating mining and other projects because different groups hold different values, and arguments often hinge on the valuation of costs and benefits rather than the technical aspects of the analysis.Mineral exploration is a high risk business and the potential returns must be sufficient to attract capital if New Zealand&apos;s mineral resources are to be developed.A resurgence of goldmining will clearly have obvious benefits for Waihi but the local community must plan carefully for their future.&nbsp;New Zealand will also gain valuable foreign exchange required for higher levels of economic activity.

Oxides are important for use in the production of metals, ceramic hardware, paints, permanent magnets, magnetic recording tapes and many other uses. In some of these applications, particle morphology, degree of crystallinity, purity, and homogeneity are relatively insignificant, while for other uses, these same properties are of critical importance. Many conventional processes are based upon recovery of the oxides from aqueous solutions by processes which include neutralization, evaporation of solvent, and precipitation of a complex salt. Consequently, many of these techniques lead to oxides of low quality. There is a growing demand for oxides of high quality, i.e., materials with narrow particle size distribution, controlled particle morphology, high purity, few structural defects, and high degree of crystallinity and homogeneity. This demand has prompted industry to search for new approaches for the manufacture of these special materials. One new approach for preparing high quality oxides is hydrothermal precipitation. This process has been used for preparing simple oxides such as ZrO2; mixed oxides such as ZrO2-SiO2; and complex oxides such as BaTiO3. These oxides were prepared in a high state of purity with a high degree of crystallinity and., in many cases, without the addition of precipitants. Many impurities- that are normally precipitated by conventional methods such as neutralization present no problem since they remain in solution. Nature of the process and its applications are discussed in this article.

Prior to 1986, users of satellite based remotely sensed data were almost exclusively reliant on the United States Landsat series of satellites to monitor our Earth&apos;s resources. This situation changed when France, Belgium and Sweden launched SPOT-1 in 1986. The year of 1988 saw the Japanese also enter into the earth resource satellite business. The Japanese launched an earth resource monitoring satellite with an emphasis on marine resources, hence the name MOS-1 (Marine Observation Satellite). Many more remote sensing instruments are planned for launch by these nations and others in the next 10 years.

Mesothermal lode-gold deposits often pose problems during sampling because of their complex and erratic gold grade distribution, and the presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation protocols must form the basis of any resource estimate at whatever stage a project is at. Design of a sampling regime must be based upon a thorough understanding of orebody mineralogy and geology. This should include consideration of gold particle size and distribution. The sample type, size and density employed must also be based on the underlying geology of the deposit. Choice of sample preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if fundamental sampling error and analytical errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, consistently understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and bulk leach extractable gold assay. The proportion of coarse gold within samples will have a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assay method. The application of Gy sampling theory can help to reduce errors within the processing of samples of broken rock. Quality control/assurance of sampling regimes must also be critically assessed. The problems associated with sampling mesothermal lode-gold type deposits are presented as case studies from Western Australia and North America.

"FOREWORDAmong many problems created by World War II, the question of supplies and distribution of raw materials is of outstanding importance. One of the most critical of these raw materials is fuel, and of the fuels coal is of primary importance. The normal consumption of coal has increased greatly owing to the increased tempo of industry in general. It has been necessary to divert much of the fuel oil, gasoline, etc., ordinarily used for industrial and domestic purposes, to supply the enormous demands of mechanized warfare. Coal must be provided to replace this fuel. Furthermore, the enormous increase in the production of steel has increased the demand for coking coals to a critical point.The Solid Fuels Administration for War is encouraging the use of anthracite fines in the production of byproduct coke for blast furnaces for three reasons. First, the production of anthracite for domestic use; is hampered by the inability to find a market for the fines incidental to the production of domestic sizes. Second, the shortage of low-volatile coking coal is acute, and any action that will decrease the quantity of low-volatile coal required will relieve the situation. As will be seen in this report, there is some promise that use of anthracite fines in coke-oven mixes will lower the amounts of low-volatile coal required. Third, utilization of those anthracite fines will tend also to alleviate the general fuel shortage. It has been the privilege of the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the Solid Fuels Administration in the technical problems involved."

Computer modeling of the blasting process can aid in gaining an understanding of the physics controlling the process. The sequence of events in a blast occur so rapidly and in such a violent environment that measurements are still difficult to obtain. Computer modeling using a program such as DMC [Taylor and Preece, 1989a, 1989b] can provide insights into the physics of the rapid and violent events associated with a blast. DMC has been used to simulate crater blasting @‘teece, 199Oc] and the blasting of Oil Shale for modified in-situ retorting [Freece, 1990a, 1990b]. This paper will address the influence that damping has on the velocity distribution in the rock mass during the rock motion phase of a blast. Since velocity distribution is a controlling factor of muck pile shape, damping also conbibutes to muck pile shape.
