A modified three-dimensional Lerches-Grossmann (LG) graph tree algorithm that generates the complete set of nested maximum valued pits in a single run is presented. This modified LG algorithm looks at the relative strength (average value) of the branches (groups of blocks). Pointers are allocated and pruned until there are no members of weaker (lower average value) branches overlying members of stronger (higher average value) branches. The final set of strong branches arc listed in order of decreasing strength. The pits they represent form the maximum valued convex hull for a single-variable pit-limit parameterization. A description of the algorithm is given along with examples of lion it has been applied at Newmont.

"Many investigations are being performed with the goal of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and permanently storing it in geologically stable settings. At the same time, carbon dioxide in the form of dissolved carbonate is steadily accumulating in the world's oceans. Both carbon dioxide sequestration and oceanic accumulation are constrained by the aqueous thermodynamics of the carbonate system. These constraints are illustrated using the STABCAL computer model to generate potential-pH and aqueous distribution diagrams of seawater in contact with various pressures of carbon dioxide gas. STABCAL diagrams and titration simulations are also used to model some potentially useful cation-carbonate sequestrationsystems.IntroductionAtmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have risen dramatically in the past couple of centuries and are rising still, primarily as a result of human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels. Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have been implicated as a main cause of global warming but have other effects as well.Rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide result in increased concentrations of dissolved carbonate complexes in water, including the oceans. These dissolved carbonates interact with other dissolved substances, altering overall seawater chemistry, most noticeably causing lowered pH levels.Some of these chemical changes are observed directly, for instance the general drop in oceanic pH, [1], while others can be inferred and predicted using thermodynamic modeling. The chemistry of dissolved carbonate in seawater is not especially intricate, as such chemical systems go, but neither is it simple enough to be worked out on the back of an envelope. Interactions between the several simple carbonate species and all the major dissolved cations in seawater should be considered, as well as the effects of competing anions, especially chloride and sulphate, since they are much more abundant than carbonate in seawater."

To the south and west of Broken Hill lies the Thackaringa silver-lead district, about 25 miles, and is the locality really of the first silver find in the country long before Broken Hill, the geological fomations of which it much resembles. The Iocks and their structure are identical, except that in this area they are  more irregularly foliated and apparently much more faulted and expose in places quick successions of complete anticlines and synclines, even in a single lease. Saddles of ore respectively are found coinciding with the flexures of the rock but many minor veins otherwise and branches exist and make connections which render the whole a mining problem. It follows then that the surface.of the ground after some denudation in dotted with croppings of all the series, and in such a confusing way that the actual strike of a vein may be even confounded with the dip and readily mistaken for it at a few places. The main character of the outcrops are those usual in the district consisting almost wholly of argentiferous and silicious ironstone, sometimes gossan, which at a depth in a few feet changes to a gangue of very silicious carbonate of iron (crystallised), which occurrence is uniform through this district.The exploration of the lodes has not been extensive as it has not been well understood. Shallow shafts and drives have comprised nearly all the mining at present, which is evident on first sight by the numerous shafts and small excavations dotted 'about, as in an alluvial field. The depth of exploration underground in one place had gone several hundreds of feet, never more than 150 feet vertical from the surface in depth and irregular. The undulations of the most continuous work in this direction is such that it presents at different places successively either a tunnel, shaft, underlay winze, level, or Tise, and is on ore all the time, and where the rocks are faulted (which occurs as much as 30 feet and more) these changes are very abrupt, but for working on are suitably connected by the management.

At the 1971 Annual Meeting we presented a paper on the results s obtained by wet magnetic separation on very fine, slightly magnetic material . Considerable interest was shown in a corollary subject, namely; on the type of magnetic con¬struction of the Magnetic Engineering Associates (MEA) high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS). it is the purpose of this paper to describe the principles of this separator and to give answers to many of the questions directed at us both in session and privately since the March 1971 meeting of the AIME. It is well-known that passage of a direct electric current through a wire shaped in the form of a loop results in a magnetic field being created in the volume enclosed within the loop. The magnetic field is proportional to the amperes of electric current passing through the wire. If the wire is in the form of a solenoid consisting of 11 turns, the magnetic field is n times larger. Hence the expression ampere-turns commonly associated with magnetic separators. If a particle, free to rotate and of higher magnetic susceptibility than the medium, is placed in a magnetic field, it will orient itself within that field, and it will move within the field in such a way as to go into a more intense part of the field. The traction on the particle is proportional to its inherent magnetic property which depends on its magnetic susceptibility and its volume, to the mag¬nitude of the field at the spot where the particle is situated, and to the magnitude of the field gradient at that spot. Of the three factors that control traction on a particle in a magnetic field, the magnet designer can effectively control two, the magnetic field and the field gradient. In a wet magnetic separator such as the HIMS magnetic separator, there is another force exerting traction on the particle, and that is the force of the fluid (liquid) on the particle. It is, therefore, essential to examine the relationship of the fluid to the magnetic field. First, assume the water in which magnetic and non-magnetic particles are suspended to be stagnant. In the absence of magnetic field, the only forces acting on the particles are those due to gravitation on the particles and on the fluid displaced. This is the subject, so important in gravity concentration, discussed in elementary texts of mineral engineering'.

The content of the book covers: (1) The theory of the Eötvös torsion balance; derivation of the working formulas; description of the instrument; method of observation; relation of the magnitudes observed to the lines of force and the level surfaces of gravity; corrections or normal effects, near and distance terrane; subterranean effects; effects due to certain mathematical bodies. (2) Notes on the practical employment of the Eötvös torsion balance; initial testing of the instrument and of accessories; hints on planning the survey; work at the station site; office computation and plotting of results; the interpretation of the results: (3) A description of the instrument and instructions for its manipulation. This book was the best discussion in English on the theory and use of the Eötvös torsion balance and is surpassed only by a later paper by the same authors that covers much of the same ground. The book is suitable for a textbook for beginners, and advanced students will find it of use. It should be available as a reference book in all geological libraries and in all torsion balance department offices.

The possibility of chemical analysis by identification of characteristic X-ray spectral lines was first suggested by H. C. J. Moseley in 1913.3/ For a given spectral series it was found that the frequency of the characteristic radiation was proportional to the square of the atomic number of the excited atom. Siegbahn and his coworkers improved the instrumentation and accurately determined the wavelengths of the characteristic spectra for most of the elements .4/ In fluorescent X-ray spectroscopy, the characteristic X-rays of atoms are emitted or fluoresced upon absorption of primary or incident X-rays of shorter wave-lengths (higher energies). The K spectral lines are used for elements of atomic numbers 13 to about 63, and the L series for those above atomic number 50. Whether the K or L lines are used for elements 50-63 depends upon the type of instrumentation available. The laboratory at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., uses the K lines up to atomic number 57 and the L lines for thong elements of higher atomic number.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the State of Indiana cooperated with AMAX Coal Co. and its consultants to determine the effects of coal mine overburden blasting on nearby pipelines. Five pressurized 76-m pipeline sections were installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN, for testing to failure. Four 17-to 51-cm-diameter welded steel pipes and one 22-cm PVC pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the test pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale, close-in blasting for construction, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 950 kg per delay in 31-cm blastholes. Analyses found low pipe responses, strains, and calculated stresses from even large blasts. Ground vibrations of 120 to 250 mm/s produced worst case strains that were about 25 pct of the strains resulting from normal pipeline operations and calculated stresses of only about 10 to 18 pct of the ultimate tensile strength. No pressurization failures or permanent strains occurred even at vibration amplitudes of 600 mm/s.

Understanding of the diffusion problem has recently been furthered by the analysis of Birchenall and Meh1.l They pursued the problem of the variation of the diffusion coefficient with composition for non-ideal solid solutions. Their analysis follows the tradition of Wagner,l Jost, Dehlinger, and Darken & who assumed the net flux of diffusing material to be proportional to the gradient of a quantity related to free energy. The basic assumption in Birchenall and Mehl's formulation of the problem is that the net flux of diffusing material is proportional to a thermodynamic activity gradient. To estimate the applicability of the derived relations, they corrected the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite by utilizing Smith's6 activity data for carbon, and the diffusion coefficients for zinc in copper with activity data computed from the vapor pressure measurements of Har-greaves.' The corrected coefficients for carbon were virtually independent of carbon concentration. For the diffusion of zinc in copper a moderate variation of diffusion coefficient with concentration remained after the correction. The problem of diffusion can be formulated in another way than that used by Birchenall and Mehl. The method is that of chemical rate theory and has been used by Eyring and his coworkers8,9 as well as by Eyring and Zwolinskilo in a discussion to Birchenall and Mehl's paper. As yet the method has not been applied to substitu-tional solid solutions. On the basis of their assumptions, Eyring and Zwolinski derived a relation between the diffusion coefficient and activity that is identical with that of Dehlinger and Darken but which does not correct for the variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration as well as does the relation derived by Birchenall and Mehl. It was thought that the theory of diffusion would be more complete if the inconsistency between the two analyses could be rationalized and if diffusion in substitu-tional alloys were analyzed on the basis of the concepts of the chemical rate theory. Bolting forms a prestressed elastic layer of rock which is capable of supporting loads at right angles to the bolted surface. Investigations on rock bolting made with a number of different models give rise to empirical and theoretical prin- ciples for the formation and action of the layer. In the models, flat and arched layers of many materials were used simulating rock conditions ranging from closely interlocked blocks to fragments of various shapes. Results of observations made in the underground works of the Snowy Mountains Scheme are related to the mode of action of bolted surface layers of rock. There is abundant experimental, theoretical and practical explanation for the well-demonstrated capability of bolting as a means of rock support.

THE structures of quenched eutectoid and hypereu-tectoid Fe-Cu alloys have been examined by X-ray diffraction and by optical and electron microscopy. The relevant portion of the Fe-Cu phase diagram is given in Fig. 1. Several values have been reported for the solubility of copper in a Fe at the eutectoid temperature, including 1.4 wt pct by orton' and 2.13 wt pct by Wreidt and Darken.2 Alloys containing 4.8 and 7.5 wt pct Cu have been prepared from two batches of Ferrovac E iron (0.005C and 0.013C) and electrolytic tough pitch copper (99.90 Cu). Specimens of dimensions 0.8 by 0.8 by 0.1 in. were cut from hot-rolled material, austenitized, and quenched into brine at 25°C. Similar specimens were also cooled in the furnace, after a short soaking treatment at 1100°C, at a rate estimated to be 10°C per min in the temperature range of 900" to 500°C. X-ray diffractometry was performed on quenched and on furnace-cooled bulk specimens using iron radiation. Only a bcc phase could be detected in all samples. Lattice parameters were calculated from measurements on four lines, made up of two resolved high-angle doublets. Comparisons were made against a silicon standard. Results are shown in Table I. Based on X-ray diffraction studies of a series of alloys of lower copper concentrations, orton' estimated that the tattice constant of a Fe at 25°C increases 0.0014A per wt pct Cu in solution. Extrapolating Norton's data, it may be concluded that all copper was retained in solution in the brine-quenched 4.8 pct Cu alloy, and that approximately 5 pct Cu was also held in solution on quenching the 7.5 pct Cu alloy. Typical microstructures of brine-quenched specimens, as observed by optical microscopy, are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Precipitation of the E phase (copper-rich) occurred along the y grain boundaries on quenching the 7.5 pct Cu alloy, rendering them readily detectable in the microstructure, Fig. 3. The original boundaries in the 4.8 pct Cu specimens were gener- ally not discernible, however. This indicates that the z phase which was seen in the higher-copper alloy was probably of proeutectoid origin. The problem of vein formation has been of particular interest to the writer for years. As his work for a long time was confined largely to districts showing large deposits of copper ore, it was natural that the efficiency of replacement, as one if not the chief control of the emplacement of the ore, seemed a particularly attractive hypothesis. Of late years, in almost daily underground work in the Guanajuato district, he has collected evidence which makes it certain that in a number of cases the ore solutions were under sufficient pressure to force the rock walls apart and to hold them apart, thus offering an open space for the deposition of vein and ore-bearing material. This paper will concern itself with conditions frequently met with in hypogene ore deposits of the vein type, and will deal in particular with ore occurrence in precious-metal veins of the type classified by Lindgrenl as epithermal deposits, or metalliferous deposits formed near the surface by ascending thermal waters2 and in genetic connection with igneous rocks. To account for the emplacement of this type of ore deposit various writers have suggested the following agencies: 1. Shattering of the wall rocks. 2. Pressure of growing crystals. 3. Magmation, as treated at length by Spurr3. 4. Replacement. 5. Openings produced by folding. 6. Shearing due to gravity. 7. Shrinkage produced by the passage of pre-ore solutions. 8. Contraction joints produced by lateral secretion. To this list there may be added another agency, a discussion of which forms the basis of this paper: 9. Pressure of the ore-bearing solutions.

Loubert Witbank is a defunct coal mine situated near Ermelo in South Africa. Mining ceased in 1992, and within a short period acidic decant occurred, with a significant impact on the regional catchment. The problem was studied during 1996/1997, and the site remediated in 2001/2002 by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. Remediation involved primarily submerging of carbonaceous material, backfilling of voids, and capping of the site. Acidic water with high iron levels was also neutralised and discharged. The project was used to assess the cost benefit of different options to the downstream users, from which target expenditure was derived for the various improvements. The cost benefit analysis for neutralisation provided a basis for the investigation of low-cost neutralisation options that are robust enough to be applied in a remote environment.

Most metallurgists are well acquainted with the contributions already made to the study of metals by the use of X-rays. On the one hand, the radiographic method is constantly becoming of increasing importance as a nondestructive testing procedure, while on the other hand the techniques of X-ray diffraction have made important contributions to the fundamental knowledge in studies of phase diagrams, stress conditions, and so forth. A new, and as yet insufficiently appreciated, tool exists in the application of microradiography to alloy structures. This new procedure in many respects bears the same relation to microscopic investigations as does macroradiography to the gross inspection of metal surfaces. However, where macroradiography is used ordinarily to determine the soundness of the metal structure, this new method can be used not only to investigate micro-un-soundness but also to examine the distribution of the constituent elements within the body of the alloy. When combined with the normal procedures of microscopy, this offers a technique of great potential power. It is intended in this paper to present a few examples of copper-base alloys demonstrating the additional knowledge obtained from the microradiographic method. The detection of micro-unsoundness is demonstrated in Fig. I for a sample of cartridge brass as cast. The sample ap- peared quite sound when viewed under the microscope, but in reality was thickly populated with minute voids. This application of the method conforms in every way to conventional large-scale radiography and has been used to facilitate production of metal for vacuum devices.' The true potentialities of the technique are revealed by comparison of Figs, 2a and 2b, which are respectively a photomicrograph and a microradiograph of a cast alloy of 80 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Sn, 10 per cent Pb. The remarkable difference in appearance provides some concept of the additional information this method may yield when used as an auxiliary to microscopic studies. Fig. 2a shows two phases of the copper-tin system plus segregated_ lumps of lead. Fig. 2b, on the other hand, shows with exceptional clarity the actual dendritic growth of the metal crystals during solidification. The practice of microradiography depends upon the laws of absorption of X-rays. This subject has been reviewed thoroughly in recent papers,l,2,3 but for clarity a brief resume will be given here. As is well known, when a beam of X-rays is transmitted through a, layer of homogeneous material, the intensity is reduced according to the relation: where Il is the transmitted intensity, I0 is the incident intensity, µ1 is the linear absorption coefficient of the material, t1 is the thickness of the material.

Due to difficulties associated with gripping in direct tension, indirect methods are commonly used to measure rock tensile strength. In this work, we adopt an innovative indirect tensile test method: Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) to measure the tensile/flexural strength of Laurentian granite (LG). The static tests are carried out with a servo-controlled material testing machine and the dynamic tests are conduced with a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. Pulse shaping technique is adopted to achieve dynamic force equilibrium in SHPB to facilitate data regression. Finite element method is used to relate the failure load to the tensile strength. Strong rate dependence of the tensile strength is observed. The flexural strength is higher than the tensile strength measured using Brazilian Disc (BD). This difference is rationalized using the non-local theory. To further validate the method, a coupled Finite element/Discrete element method (Fem/Dem) in conjunction with the smeared crack model is utilized to simulate the fracture process during dynamic SCB tests. The resulting fracture patterns are qualitatively consistent with those from recovered samples. Both the experimental and numerical methods have validated the results and this new method is readily to be used for other rocks and other brittle materials.

Creation of 3D model of coal seams is a tedious and time consuming operation. Computer aided 3D solid modelling of coal seams can be performed in a fast and detailed manner. However, in case of having tectonically disturbed coal seams where faults may be observed, expert opinion is necessary to decide the geometry of the coal seam. The aim of this study is detection of fault zones with computers by using drill hole data. Firstly, a digital database is generated by using the drill hole data. Surface models of the layers are produced by applying triangulation method on coal seam roof elevations. The generated surface is divided into small squares and consequently dip and dip direction values are calculated for each square. Variograms for dip and dip direction are determined and maps showing the variation of dip and dip direction are generated by using geostatistical methods such as kriging and co-kriging. Examination of disconformities observed on estimation maps created by kriging and co-kriging clearly reveals the extension of faults. The method used in this study is applied to detect fault lines of a known mine field. 3D solid modelling of the coal seam has also been performed by using conventional cross-section method. The results of both methods were in good agreement. Identification of major faults by using the method introduced in this study could certainly simplify 3D solid modelling of coal seams.

In September 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Ivan caused the Pigeon River in western North Carolina to flood. This flooding eroded the embankment below Interstate 40 (I-40) and sent one of the eastbound lanes, along with the roadway shoulder, into the river below the embankment. North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) needed to reopen all the lanes of I-40 as soon as possible and considered this damage to be an emergency situation. NCDOT contracted Schnabel Foundation Company to design and build a repair that would keep this important interstate open and reestablish the eastbound lane. The obstacles included limited work room, the requirement of keeping the remaining lanes of I-40 in service, and producing a final product that would be relatively maintenance free and last at least 100 years. The proposed repair had to consider that the existing interstate was founded on a rock fill that was constructed from rock blasted off the adjacent mountain side. The selected design included two, tied-back micropile walls to address these obstacles and other issues. Each of the walls were constructed of 10.75 inch diameter micropiles and corrosion-protected tieback anchors installed through the existing rock fill into competent bedrock, concrete wales, and a reinforced shotcrete facing. This successful project was completed during the coldest months of the year and within the timeframe established by the State of North Carolina. This paper will discuss the design and construction of the repair and the many challenges that had to be overcome.

"This paper presents the design and angular strength analysis of microneedles for use as a transdermal interface for drug delivery, fluid analysis and sampling etc. Microneedles of different dimensions were designed and fabricated using various materials viz. Si02, OxideNitride- Oxide (O-N-0). The design, modeling and analysis was done using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software ANSYS™ 6.1. Angular strength analysis of the microneedles was done using angular loading in ANSYS™, with the corresponding inaterial property settings. Using the force-displacement settings, forces of magnitudes in the range of 10 mN - 25 mN were applied on the microneedles at loading angles ranging from 30° to 90° was applied on needles. Square and circular shaped microneedles were modeled and the displacements and stresses generated were studied to characterize the angular strength of the microneedles. The buckling and force-displacement analyses show that O-N-O microneedles are more strong and robust as compared to needles of other materials. The analysis shows that while circular microneedles have uniform stress distribution, square microneedles have low stresses concentrated along the edges.INTRODUCTIONIn modem clinical and biomedical applications, drug delivery is done either by oral administration or by hypodermic injection. Hypodermic injection of drugs using needles is often painful. Hence, transdermal drug delivery techniques are increasingly being sought out as an alternative. In transdermal drug delivery the needles puncture the Stratum comeurn - the outermost layer of the human skin. The advantage of transdermal drug delivery (or transdermal measurement) technique, is that it reduces pain and tissue trauma."
