A formulation is given and a general analytical solution is presented for the problem of spherical phase growth in multicomponent systems. The results are valid for describing the rate of bubble growth in the absence of translational motion and, therefore, should be relevant to heterogeneous nucleation processes. Typical worked examples are given, which include bubble growth due to the simultaneous diffusion of hydrogen and nitrogen in molten steel, and the growth of CO bubbles in steel, due to the reaction: C + 0 = CO. The calculations predict that the presence of additional components would enhance the growth rate and also increase the absolute rate at which the individual components are transferred into the bubble. These findings should be relevant to degassing processes. THE problem of spherical bubble growth in the absence of translational motion is appropriate to the description of the heterogeneous nucleation and subsequent growth of gas bubbles while attached to a solid surface. Such problems are of considerable practical relevance to various vacuum degassing and steelmaking processes where bubble nucleation and subsequent growth play an important part in the overall reaction mechanism. A definitive formulation of spherical phase growth has been given in the now classical paper by Scriven1 and the analogous problem for solid phase growth has been discussed by Horvay,2 furthermore a thorough review of the relevant literature has also become available.3 All this previous work was concerned with one component or binary systems. The purpose of this paper is to show that the technique developed by Scriven may be generalized to alow the consideration of multicomponent systems. The results of this generalization would be particularly relevant, as gas bubble nucleation in the metallurgical systems previously mentioned frequently involves the simultaneous diffusion of several components. In the following a general formulation is given and typical worked examples are presented. FORMULATION Consider the growth of a spherical gas bubble due to diffusion in a quiescent liquid of infinite extent, as sketched in Fig. 1. The formulation of such problems requires the statement of the following conservation equations relating to the liquid phase: Equation of continuity Equation of motion Conservation of the diffusing species—Diffusion Equation. The following assumptions are made: a) The fluid is incompressible, quiescent, and of infinite extent b) The bubble is stationary, i.e., it undergoes no translational motion c) Spherical symmetry is observed throughout d) The mass diffusivity is constant e) Chemical equilibrium exists at the surface of the bubble, and any reactions occurring there are fast compared to the diffusion process f) Inertia and surface tension effects are neglected. Equations derived on the basis of these assumptions by previous investigators were found to provide a reasonable representation of bubble growth while attached to a surface in organic and aqueous systems4,5 For gas bubble growth in molten metal systems assumptions a) to d) chould hold reasonably well. The exclusion of chemical kinetics as a possible rate limiting step may not be universally valid, but should hold for many systems operating at high temperatures. The effect of hydrodynamic inertia may be neglected for moderate growth rates; finally, the assumption neglecting the effect of interfacial tension on the bubble growth was made for the sake of mathematical convenience; its inclusion would have required the use of quite cumbersome numerical techniques. While surface tension effects could be appreciable on the initial values of the overall growth rate, especially at low absolute pressures and in case of small bubbles, they are not thought to modify the relative effects present in multicomponent systems, the study of which is the objective of this paper. A METHOD was recently devised to indicate two or more successive stages of the migration of grain boundaries in aluminum, and to record the direction of the migration. This technique was used for the study of the various types of boundary migration occurring in high purity aluminum.' The method employs alternate annealing and electrolytic etching treatments, repeated as many times as desired. All successive sets of grain boun- dary positions revealed by the various etches appear superimposed on each other. The last etch is designed to leave an oxide film on the surface which is optically anisotropic. The orientation of the oxide film at each point is determined by the orientation of the underlying aluminum grain. When viewed with polarized light using crossed nicols and a Biot-Klein quartz plate, grains with differing orientations appear in different colors, as described by Hone and Pearson.' On June 15, Dr. E. E. Southard gave the following report to the Advisory Committee on Industrial Mental Hygiene of the. Engineering Foundation. Psychiatric social work, a new specialty in social work, was the topic of several section meetings (500-600 in attendance) at the National Conference for Social Work, held at Atlantic City, June 1-6. The new specialty was stated, by Dr. R. C. Cabot, to be the greatest single advance in medical social work since its establishment. Reports from three schools (Smith, New York, Philadelphia) indicate a good production rate of personnel, probably at least one hundred a; year, chiefly to be absorbed by hospitals, unless industrial psychiatry steps into the field. No detailed public announcements concerning industrial psychiatry were made; but private discussions elicited approval only for the program. Indications are that many non-medical social workers will decide to get additional training to go into medical social work and then to specialize in psychiatric social work and that many medical social workers will desire to specialize in psychiatric social work, with a view partly to entering reconstruction work, partly to entering industrial psychiatry. Suggestion has been made that psychiatric social workers may go into some kinds of, employment management and may look for special courses to that end. Evidence. has been brought that certain "compensated" psychopathic employees have been good (even very good) workmen: emphasis should be laid on this point to show the constructive aspect of industrial psychiatry:

The environmental and economic sustainability of froth flotation is dependent on effective management, which in turn improves the performance of a concentrator. In economic terms this means improved recovery of valuable minerals, in environmental terms this means effective management of acid generating tailings. Three indicators were selected to measure the performance of an integrated flotation system. The system consists of two stages of flotation; valuable mineral flotation followed by environmental desulfurisation by froth flotation. The suitable indicators were selected based on their fulfilment of four attributes. An attribute is a desired aspect of an indicator. The four attributes were: comprehensive, relevant, sensitive and quantitative. Two environmental indicators and one economic indicator were selected. They represent revenue generation from valuable minerals and environmental cost of management. The suitability of the selected indicators was shown using illustrative scenarios.

A most stimulating event in the development of world mineral production and technology, the Eighth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress was convened at Melbourne Town Hall on March 1 by Sir Maurice Mawby, President of the Congress. Continuing successively at Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, and Surfers Paradise in Australia and then at Wellington, New Zealand, the four plenary sessions, 50 technical sessions, and both local and extended mine and plant tours during the seven weeks of the Congress, provided a superb medium for assessing the present and looking into the future. There were more than 2300 participants from 32 countries in the various functions of the Congress, including 500 delegates and wives from countries other than Australia and New Zealand, and from 18 countries not members of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Registrants from South Africa numbered close to 200 and there were about 100 from Canada, 70 from the United Kingdom, 60 from the United States, and 20 from Zambia. Although most of the overseas delegates held administrative positions with companies, government agencies, and colleges or universities, professions identifiable from registrations included 100 engineers, 60 geologists and 30 metallurgists.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research and development on a coal-burning gas turbine. This work includes the development of (1) turbine blades resistant to coal ash erosion, (2) equipment to feed coal under pressure to a turbine, (3) an efficient combustion system, and (4) equipment to remove coal ash from the gases that drive the turbine. Initial emphasis is being placed on testing the first turbine ever equipped with blades designed specifically for use with coal as the fuel. Operating tests with this turbine are now in progress. This paper describes the Bureau's coal-burning gas turbine development program and progress on this operating test.

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. The methane content of virgin bituminous coalbed can now be measured accurately in the field with exploration core samples from vertical boreholes. The gas content of the coal per unit weight can be used either to design a mine ventilation system or to determine if degasification of the coalbed will be necessary before mining, and to determine the gas resources in the coalbed. The equipment necessary to conduct the test costs less than $50. The gas content of the coal in place in the ground is determined by summing the gas lost from coring, gas measured during desorption, and the residual gas in the coal. Upon removal from the borehole, the core sample is placed in an airtight container and desorbed for several weeks until the desorption rate is below 0.05 cm3/g for 5 consecutive days. The gas lost from the core while it was being cored and the residual gas are estimated by a new graphical method. The amount of gas remaining depends upon whether the coal is friable or blocky. Friability appears to relate to the depth of the sample below the surface, fixed carbon percentage, Hardgrove grindability index, and proximity to tectonic disturbance. Friable coals emit nearly 96 pct of the total gas during desorption whereas a blocky coal emits only 60 pct of its total gas. Coalbeds that are ill defined as to their blocky or friable nature must be tested in the laboratory for unambiguous analysis.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski County, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the eighth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is no followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations at those holes show on figure 13 in volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs at the drill holes. Many at the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and gra.de. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each halt township is given with the discussion covering that area.

An engineering house?s perspective of required inputs in designing a copper electrowinning tank house and ancillary equipment calls for both understanding of the key fundamental controlling mechanisms and the practical requirements to optimize cost, schedule and product quality. For direct or post solvent extraction copper electrowinning design, key theoretical considerations include current density and efficiency, electrolyte ion concentrations, cell voltages and electrode over potentials, physical cell dimensions, cell flow rates and electrode face velocities, and electrolyte temperature. Practical considerations for optimal project goals are location of plant, layout of tank house and ancillary equipment, elevations, type of cell furniture, required cathode quality, number and type of cells, material of construction of cells, structure and interconnecting equipment, production cycles, anode and cathode material of construction and dimensions, cathode stripping philosophy, plating aids, acid mist management, piping layouts, standard electrical equipment sizes, electrolyte filtration, impurity concentrations, bus bar and rectifier/transformer design, electrical isolation protection, crane management, sampling and quality control management, staffing skills and client expectations. All of the above are required to produce an engineered product that can be designed easily, constructed quickly and operated with flexibility.

When production targets are not being reached it is essential to determine what the operating problems are so that remedial action can be taken. It is also imperative that all persons who are part of the production stream within a mining operation know and understand what the operating difficulties and delays are so that corrective action is effective. This includes the supervisors, superintendents, planning team members and managers. A new approach recently adopted at Hilton Mine to help identify these operating difficulties has been to use short-term schedules and reports known as the Daily Shift Schedule Controls (DSSC), and the Daily Weekly Operating Reports (DWOR) respectively. These control elements have enabled management and supervisory staff to accurately identify labour inefficiencies and ultimately determine capital resources.

In a recent upgrade of their system, Amtrak converted a bascule type draw bridge over the Thames River to a vertical lift structure supported by the existing piers. During the bridge replacement, significant settlement occurred on one of the piers and movement continued thereafter. Construction was stopped as Amtrak became concerned as to how much the subsequent construction activities would cause the pier to further settle and tilt, not only impacting the operation of the existing bridge, but also jeopardizing the new lift span. Mueser Rutledge was engaged at this time to help understand and solve the problem. A remedial grouting program was developed to arrest the settlement. As a subcontractor to Cianbro Corporation, Pittsfield, ME, The Judy Company was hired to perform the remedial grouting work. Work platforms were constructed around the pier for support of the drilling equipment. A dual string drilling system was used to install sleeve pipes at depths of up to 185? below the water level. Ultrafine cement grout stabilized with additives was placed at 2.5 foot intervals through the depth of the sand and gravel stratum below the bottom of the pier. Logistics were difficult and the schedule was severely impacted by the remedial work, necessitating working six 12-hour shifts per week and working in the river through the winter months. After four months of drilling and grouting, movement of the pier stopped. At the conclusion of the remedial work, more than a million gallons of ultrafine cement grout were placed. Confirmation borings recovered completely solidified material with compressive strengths ranging from 500 to 1500 psi. The bridge replacement was then completed and is functioning. Continued monitoring through July 2009 shows negligible movement.

Combustible materials, when burned, produce toxic gases and smoke, which may vary dramatically from one material to another, with resultant different total toxicity and smoke obscuration levels. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents smoke property data acquired for a variety of mine combustibles and shows that there exists a correlation between the smoke properties, the relative toxicity, and the smoke obscuration levels of those combustibles tested. These correlations can be used to devise simple, standard tests for determining the toxic and smoke obscuration hazards of mine materials during fire.

On many occasions during construction and service life of the structure, it is crucial to know the load in post tensioning tendons and anchors. Although there are many methods to measure the tendon force, most of them are cumbersome, expensive and the accuracy differs depending on the method used Dyna Force sensor uses the Elasto-magnetic technology (EM) and non destructive testing (NDT) to direct measure stress level in prestressed strands or bars installed on ground anchors or post tensioning tendons. Dyna Force sensor can be used to rapidly read the change in load during proof and performance tests and compare with the pressure gauge and during the life on the anchor to monitor existing lock-off load. It can be used also to determine the load along the bonded length of the anchor allowing the contractor to increase or decrease this length. The paper presents Dyna Force operating principle and some applications. In conclusion, the Elasto magnetic technology applied through Dyna Force is a new and easy to use approach to monitor anchor load during proof test and service life of the structure.

"Detection of outliers is an important primary step in geomodelling. Geological datasets often contain errors due to problems such as measurement device limitations and recording glitches. In this paper, a robust Mahalanobis distance–based approach is successfully applied to particle size distributions of the Joslyn lease, an oil sands development site near Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Automatic outlier detection and geological review were combined. Outliers from the Mahalanobis distance approach were compared with their respective core photographs to determine if laboratory measurements and facies classification were correct. A checking procedure for laboratory technicians is proposed.RÉSUMÉ La détection des valeurs aberrantes constitue une étape primaire importante de la modélisation géologique. Les ensembles de données géologiques contiennent souvent des erreurs en raison de problèmes tels que les limitations des instruments de mesure et des pépins d’enregistrement. Dans le présent article, une méthode robuste basée sur la distance de Mahalanobis a été mise en oeuvre avec succès aux granulométries du bail minier Joslyn, un site de sables bitumineux en développement à proximité de Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. La détection automatique des valeurs aberrantes a été combinée à une étude géologique. Les valeurs aberrantes de la méthode de la distance de Manalanobis ont été comparées avec leurs photographies respectives de carottes de forage afin de déterminer si les mesures en laboratoire et la classification des faciès étaient correctes. Une procédure de vérification pour les techniciens de laboratoire est proposée."

The paper describes the main drive systems of an iron ore pelletizing plant and related important design aspects. It is shown how today?s drive systems provide the desired flexibility for the process and lead to high energy efficiency and system reliability. With respect to electric drives expansion projects have many technical issues in common with green-field installations. However, there are aspects where important, distinct differences occur. It is shown which considerations for selecting and sizing drive systems for such a plant as well as for integrating them into an overall plant control concept need to be taken into account. Besides the design of the drive systems a key aspect for such an expansion project is the network interaction. Harmonics levels at different points in the plant network need to be checked carefully with simulations during the design phase to avoid problems later-on during operation. The power factor compensation and the harmonic filtering of the new production line cannot be designed independently of the already existing plant. The paper highlights areas where problems could occur and which points need to be paid attention to when a plant is expanded.

Disposal of phosphatic clay waste slurry has been a problem since the advent of hydraulic processing of phosphate rock in Florida. Alternatives to the present practice of storing slimes behind earthen dikes have been earnestly sought for more than a quarter of a century. Seepage dewatering is a promising technique intended to increase waste clay solids content to a level sufficiently high to permit clay disposal in mine cuts, in lieu of above-grade impoundment. An experimental array of vertical seepage columns containing mine tailings sand was constructed. Significant improvement in waste clay dewatering relative to that occurring in a control test was observed when approximately 1800 m3 of waste clay was disposed of in the presence of the seepage aids.

El incremento de los costos de tareas, materiales, repuestos y la contínua baja del precio de los metales, conllevó que los ingenieros a cargo de las operaciones en la mina Carahuacra, mejoren sus métodos de minado y reduzcan sus costos, aumentando la productividad, así como las leyes de mineral de zinc mediante una mejor selectividad de los block a minar. En este sentido, el presente texto busca mostrar las actuales operaciones unitarias de perforación, voladura, sostenimiento robotizado, limpieza, acarreo del mineral y relleno de las áreas vacías, en tajeos explotados por el método súper bresting, con anchos de labor de 10 metros, alturas de 6 metros y longitudes de 200 metros. De forma que la automatización en el sostenimiento de las grandes áreas abiertas permite aumentar la eficiencia y productividad bajando costos, así como la selectividad con el objetivo que la mina sea rentable y segura.

Fire refining of copper consists of two stages copper oxidation and copper reduction. Very frequently the capacity of the anode furnace is determined by the rate of copper reduction, The analysis of factors affecting the rate of the oxygen reduction from a liquid copper with solid carbon or injected hydrocarbons pointed out the role of the mass transfer in a liquid copper in final stage of the reduction. Experimental results of copper reduction with graphite and injected natural gas in laboratory-scale crucibles showed two stages of the reduction process with a sharp change of the controlling mechanism. The estimated dynamic surface area of gas bubbles based on the measured bubble frequency and the gas flowrate allowed for the determination of the reaction constant as a degree of the partial pre-combustion of the air/natural gas mix. The variation of the used reductant as a function of the oxygen concentration and temperature has been evaluated based on the determined kinetic model. The intensification of copper reduction in fire refining has been discusses on the basis of obtained kinetic data and analysis of various factors determining the time of reduction.
