"Investigations of flotation characteristics of Lumwana and Kansanshi ores using formulated frothers were carried out. Of the six frothers tested, two came from the alcohol family, two from the glycol family and last two were formulated products. The initial work involved determining the optimum mesh of grind and frother dosage for Lumwana and Kansanshi ores. Further work involved carrying out surface tension, bubble size and froth stability measurements. Finally, water recovery tests were conducted at Lumwana and Kansanshi mine sites. For froth stability tests, six frothers were tested on a two-phase (water–air) system using the Bikerman column flotation cell, while water recovery tests were conducted using a total of seven frothers, including the standards for each plant. The results of the testwork showed that (i) although a stable froth is essential for optimum recovery of valuable minerals, a higher molecular weight frother, like Dowfroth 250, caused poor selectivity when used on fine ores and (ii) a lower molecular weight frother was suited for Lumwana ore, while a mid to higher molecular weight formulated product was suitable for Kansanshi sulphide ore. Firstly, froth stability tests were conducted using six frothers, two from the glycol family (Dowfroth 200 and Dowfroth 250), two from alcohol family (MIBC and pine oil) and other two from the formulated family (Betafroth 20 and Betafroth 245), at the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Mineral Research (CMR) laboratories. Attempts have been made during the last three decades to establish a correlation between respirable dust dosage and the degree of progression of pneumoconiosis or silicosis amongst mine workers. Fair correlation has been possible only after the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference established mass concentration of dust in the respirable size range as the true measure of the incidence of pneumoconiosis. The author had established a good correlation between cumulative total respirable dust dosage as well as cumulative silica dosage and the category of pneumoconiosis according to ILO classification at Mufulira Copper Mine. Studies at Hutti also show a linear relationship between the average cumulative dust and silica dosage md the category of pneumoconiosis. However the maximum tolerable cumulative dust dosage for - prolonged exposure is 182 mg month/m3 - at Hutti as compared to 275 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. Similarly the maximum tolerable silica dosage for - prolonged exposure is Only 35 mg month/m3 at Hutti as compared to 55 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. The TLV for dust concentration at Hutti works out at 0.6 mg/m3 compared to 1.1 mg/m3 at Mufulira and the TLV of silica concentration at Hutti is 0.117 mg/m3 compared to 0.25 mg/m3 at Mufulira. The Hutti figure is however, closer to the TLV of 0.1 mg/m 3 recommended by ACGIH.

At the 1980 TMS-AIME world symposium, Dr. Davey mentioned that the traditional lead blast furnace is now being challenged by direct smelting processes. In the copper smelting field both the blast furnace and reverberatory furnace are also disappearing in favour of direct smelting processes such as Outokumpu flash smelting, Mitsubishi continuous smelting, Noranda furnace, Inco furnace and so on. Those new processes all have the following in common: (1) High degree of mechanization (2) Metallurgical reactions carried out in closed vessels (3) Application of oxygen and/or oxygen enriched air (4) Minimization of handling materials and gaseous volume (5) Minimum energy requirements (6) Removal of workers from near the furnace (7) Reduction of emissions of harmful gas to meet environmental regulations. (8) Improvement to the work place environment to avoid occupational hygiene hazards. Direct and continuous smelting of powdered concentrate in one vessel was a romance of the metallurgist since early times. However as mentioned above, in the copper field this objective is being achieved in practice. The industry however can't deny that the serious and severe regulation of environmental pollution in every country was the prime motive for the modernization of smelters. In early days, to meet regulations, it was anticipated that many economic difficulties such as higher capital and energy costs and extravagant use of resources and waste disposal would be the result. "Turn a misfortune into a blessing" is an old saying which reveals the current thinking and reacent developments in the nonferrous industries. In the last ten years in the lead smelting field, about two decades later than copper, commercial scale smelting using new furnance technology has started. The KIVCET process and QSL process, which is flash smelting and bath smelting respectively, are becoming major competitors. They will be sure to upgrade their processes to remain economically and environmentally viable in the comming decade.

A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. The rail haulage link is scheduled for replacement by a conveyor in the near future. Mining at the present time is limited to the room and pillar method using continuous miners. Longwall mining had been attempted in the past with only limited success; as a result, several panels originally laid out for longwall mining are currently being extracted by room and pillar work. Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. INTRODUCTION "Most people would probably agree that some degree of government control and regulation is essential in modern society, and it will likely continue as an important part of our social organization for the foreseeable future. But most of us tend to be ambivalent about it. In one situation or another we are likely to see government commitment to social benefit programs or regulatory devices either as an expanding encroachment on the freedom of the individual or as an undue interference with private enterprise or with the rules of the market place. But even where there is agreement as to the desirability of government initiatives, either in general or in a particular context, it by no means follows that there will be approval of the mechanisms or procedures used or the means of carrying them out." The above statement is taken from a 1980 Working Paper of the Law Reform Commission of Canada prepared in connection with its study of the exercise of administrative law in Canada and the practices and procedures of administrative tribunals. The Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) is one such administrative tribunal, and as the federal nuclear regulatory authority, it is responsible for licensing the production, possession and use of nuclear materials, equipment and facilities and enforcing compliance with licence conditions governing the health, safety, security and environmental aspects of the activities involved. Although the AECB was established 35 years ago with the passage in August 1946 of the Atomic Energy Control Act, like many administrative tribunals its role and functions and the regulatory process which it applies have evolved significantly during this period. The changes which have taken place over the years reflect not only the vast scientific and technological developments which have occurred but also the marked differences between contemporary society and the social milieu of the mid-1940s. However, the basic philosophy of nuclear regulation in Canada and the underlying principles of the regulatory process have changed very little. Certainly, the process is far more open in terms of the general public, it has become appreciably more comprehensive and systematic in terms of the depth and extent of both the pre- and post-licensing technical evaluations which are conducted and the ensuing compliance program. Furthermore, it now applies to the whole of the nuclear fuel cycle as well as the industrial, agricultural and medical applications of radionuclides. Nevertheless the following fundamental principles remain unchanged: a. primary responsibility for achieving high standards of nuclear safety and environmental protection in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of nuclear facilities resides with the licensee; b. the credibility of the nuclear regulatory process depends not only upon its technical correctness and practicability, but also upon acceptance by the public-at-large of its perceived effectiveness and efficiency; c. regulatory criteria and principles should be concise, clearly stated and understandable; d. regulatory decision-making should be based upon stated criteria and principles taking into account pertinent scientific and technical facts only; e. fairness and impartiality must characterize all regulatory decision-making; f. the regulatory process should be subject to a comprehensive periodic review and evaluation to ensure that it continues to produce the desired results at justified costs. EXPLANATORY NOTES The mere statement of a set of principles is a relatively simple task. Far more difficult is the explanation of what these principles mean in practical terms. To stipulate that a licensee bears the primary responsibility for achieving and maintaining high standards of nuclear safety and environmental protection may be regarded by some as an attempt by the regulatory agency to evade the responsibilities assigned to it. However, this is not the case. It is unrealistic for anyone to claim that a licensee only complies with accepted norms of public and occupational health and safety and of environmental protection because of the fear of prosecution. Campbell Mine operates a 100 tpd gold autoclave that treats sulphide concentrates at 305 psi and 200 °C. Autoclave feed consists of fresh pretreated concentrate, an acidic oxide slurry recycle as well as other high arsenic sources. The brickwork that is used to construct the five compartments of the vessel must be inspected and repaired periodically. Shutdowns are scheduled to inspect this brickwork and at times replace entire sections of the brick walls or lining. It also provides an opportunity to repair or replace other internal features such as agitator blades or oxygen spargers. Mechanics and contractors are scheduled around the clock to perform the maintenance requirements. There are many safety considerations and precautions that must be taken in order to protect the well-being of the workers and minimize damage to sensitive pieces of equipment. Heat, arsenic and lead contamination and confined space issues are just a few of the hazards involved. The following paper will describe how these safety concerns are addressed and will serve as a guide for future autoclave shutdowns.

The Bureau of Mines prepared and investigated xanthated sawdust adsorbents to determine their effectiveness in removing heavy metal ions from dilute aqueous solutions, mine-drainage waters, and brines. Stripping of the metal values from the metal-laden adsorbent was also investigated. The treated sawdusts had an adsorption capacity of 0.3 to 0.4 meg/g dry adsorbent for Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd, Hg, or Pb from feed solutions with pH 5 to 6. The feed solutions tested included mine-drainage waters and geothermal brine. Effluent metal concentrations as low as 0.05 to 0.1 mg/l were obtained at effluent pH values of 6 to 9. The order of affinity of metals for the sawdust adsorbent is Na«Ca~Mg~Mn<Zn<Ni<Cd<Pb~Cu. The presence of Ca, Mg, or Na in concentrations as high as 2 g/l does not seriously impair the heavy-metal adsorption. Metals were desorbed from the metal-laden adsorbent by elution with dilute mineral acids, sodium cyanide, or salts of ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid.

The Canadian steel industry is now in many ways a mature one, having achieved many technical successes during its hundred-year history. It is interesting to look back over this period, to learn something of the histories of the different producers and of the people and forces that shaped their development. The following article provides a thumbnail sketch of the Canadian steel industry as it exists today. It is intended for the general reader, not for the specialist who will want to consult the several books and theses written on the development of the industry during the last hundred years. The famous Les Forges du Saint-Maurice, an important iron producer for a century and a half, provides a natural historical starting point for a look at the four major players - Dosco, Algoma, Stelco and Dofasco - who have provided most of the hundreds of millions of tonnes of steel, in every form from horseshoes to tinplate, needed in the twentieth century. The smaller companies which have sprung up in the last 20 or 30 years are dealt with briefly - but only because their history is so recent. Not so long ago the mini-mill, based on scrap rather than on the blast furnace, was thought to be specially suited to the economies of the smaller developing countries of the Third World. However, recent history has made it evident that the small plant, specializing in a few basic products (e.g. reinforcing bar) or taking advantage of special circumstances, can successfully compete with the large blast furnace/primary steel producers.

1 Raw coal from Truax-Traer Coal Co.&apos;s Burning Star Slope mine, Jackson County, Ill., is brought to the surface by the new 42-in. slope belt haulage conveyor at the rate of 850 tph. The loading system shown above employs four storage tracks, two tail tracks for loading, and four 25-hp hoists, operating in pairs, and coupled to two dolly cars to move the trains of cars through the tipple. The system has a capacity for loading 1800 tph. One operator is needed to load on each of two shifts. A third man working for a few hours on night shift sets up for the morning cycle. Railroad crews bring in empties placing them in the storage yard, twenty cars to the track. Trains of empties are pulled through to the tail track and loaded on the return; hoists at opposite ends pull the trains in each direction. [ ] 2 Pairs of hoist drums are interconnected electric- ally by a Trench lay cable buried between the tracks. When one hoist operates moving the cars, the tail hoist idles with brake released. The operator, situated in the tipple over the cars, views the storage yard at the end of the first shift (left). When returning loaded cars to yard, four or five cars are held on the dolly to couple the next string of empties. Empties are ready for loading on the tail track (right). Differing from a gravity system in which empty and load tracks are on a slight grade, this system is designed for 80 railroad cars for a two-shift operation and one rail service per day.

THE equilibrium y phase in Cu-Be alloys forms by discontinuous precipitation, the new phase nucleating at the grain boundaries and growing into grains on both sides of the boundary. When the alloy is aged above 500°C, however, growth may take place into only one of the grains.1&apos;2 In A1-Ag alloys it is known that the precipitate has the same orientation as the grain in which no growth takes place.3, 4 This was confirmed in the present investigation on a Cu-Be alloy. A Cu-1.79 wt pct Be alloy was solution-treated at 810°C for 2+ hr, quenched into water at O°C, and aged at 600°C for 1 hr in a salt bath. The specimen was thinned by chemical polishing and electropolishing at room temperature in a solution of H3PO4 saturated with CrOs. The foil produced was examined in a JEM 150 electron microscope operating at 150 kv. Fig. 1 shows precipitates growing on only one side of the grain boundary. Placer mining in Alaska had a desultory inception at Sumdum in 1869 and, during the years 1880 to 1896, received thin nourishment from the readily exhausted gold placers at Juneau and the longer- lived deposits in the Circle, Fortymile, and Rampart Districts. Finally, in 1897, the great Klondike discovery in Canada&apos;s Yukon Territory brought thousands of gold seekers to the Far North. These men, in successive, far-reaching gold rushes, found the large, rich gold deposits at Nome, Fairbanks, and Iditarod, as well as many smaller placers. The hectic rushes during the years from 1898 to 19 10 were comprised of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of "stampeders," as they were called. Since very many Alaskan creeks, from the crest of the Brooks Range in the north to the Pacific Ocean in the south, carry at least a few flakes of gold, there was ample seed to start a new stampede. Of the 100s of reported "strikes," nearly 50 became more or less important placer mining districts; by 1910 they had produced about 184.2 fine Mg (6.5 million fine oz) of gold; the all- time peak production year was 1906. A few of the miners and prospectors prospered, but the total value of all gold produced failed, by a wide margin, to cover the aggregate costs incurred by them in the undeveloped Territory of Alaska. On the other hand, the traders with their readily salable supplies of food, tools, and hardware and the freighters with their teams of dogs or horses and boats of all kinds profited throughout the era of stampede.

This Bureau of Mines report describes photolineaments obtained from stereoscopic examination of vertical aerial photographs and by the Ronchi grating study of aerial photoindex sheets. The photolineaments are compared with the trends of oriented fracture systems procured by measuring the compass direction of joints in bedrock. The relative reliability of the methods is shown, and the results are presented in graphical, tabular, and written form. Analyses of field measurements of strikes of bedrock joints in the project area indicate for the most part two intersecting sets of major joints oriented N 76° W - N 15° E, and N 57° W - N 27° E. The analyses of lineaments determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs show dominant trends of lineament zones of weakness to be an average of N 65° W - N 20°E. Analysis of lineaments found by Ronchi grid viewing of aerial photoindex sheets indicate dominant trends of N 70° W - N 27° E. The three methods give similar findings and verify the work of previous authors. The Ronchi grid method is a useful guide, but it cannot be substituted for the two more painstaking methods.

"INTRODUCTION This paper describes a method for the rational sorting of particles by means of a laboratory batch jig. Its purpose is to show that a material can be reliably appraised for gravity concentration without the drudgery of sink-float fractionations.Development of the batch- jig method of testing was incidental to a study of the Birmingham, Ala., red-iron ores now being conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the ore-producing companies.APPLICATIONOres and coal are commonly tested for their gravity-concentration characteristics by specific-gravity dissections in heavy liquids. The heavy liquid most commonly used for coal is zinc chloride and for ores they are benzene, carbon tetrachloride, acetylene tetrabromide, methylene iodide, and thallium malonate formate. The last is poisonous and corrosive to the skin but is essential for separations in the 3.3 to 4.4 specific gravity range. The last two of these liquids are expensive, and several of them are hard to obtain now.Although it is not suggested that heavy-liquid dissections be eliminated entirely, sometimes a more reliable evaluation of coal and ore can be obtained by other and more simple means. For example, sink-float data were unsatisfactory as a guide to commercial gravity concentration of a red-iron ore because they did not take into account the difference in particle shape of the hematite and gangue and the differences in true and apparent specific gravity of the hematite grains, some of which were porous. For this ore, the batch-jig method of testing herein discussed proved advantageous. Not Only did the batch-jig data give a truer picture of the concentration problem, but only about one-tenth the time of the conventional sink-float tests was required."

This paper presents the result of the analysis of strain-dependent concrete modulus from full-scale static axial compression load tests conducted on more than 200 instrumented cast-in-place barrettes and bored piles over the past 12 years, covering commonly adopted grades of concrete for heavy foundation construction in Malaysia and Singapore. The concrete modulus values, Ec, analysed were directly back-calculated from the material of the instrumented test piles by means of placing a layer of vibrating wire strain gauges near the pile head region. The best fit curve for back-calculated concrete secant modulus versus measured axial strain follows non-linear behaviour for both categories of test pile samples analysed. The result of the analysis seems to suggest that using average constant modulus value would generally lead to a significant error in load distribution computation, particularly at high stresses region.

Sublevel stoping was first developed in the Michigan iron mines many years ago. Since that time this method, and modifications with long hole drilling, have been used in a number of non-ferrous mines and have been described in various papers and articles. With a few exceptions, the operations where sublevel methods have been applied are producers of large daily tonnages from ore bodies of considerable size. In selecting mining methods for small properties or relatively small detached ore bodies, sublevel methods often have been overlooked. The method has been used successfully in relatively small operations at Copper Canyon, Nevada, and, more recently, in mining small ore bodies at Darwin, Calif. As a result of this experience, we believe that a review of the general procedure, the advantages noted, and the results obtained will be of interest to many operators of relatively small mines. General Description Briefly, sublevel stoping consists of, first, driving sublevel drifts at predetermined vertical intervals through the length of the stope block; second, breaking an initial mining slot across the stope; third, driving crosscut benches from each sublevel by slabbing into the slot; and, fourth, breaking the ground between benches. Applicability Since this is an open stope method, it requires wall rock that will stand over reasonable stope lengths without caving or excessive slabbing. Ore must be moderately firm but need not be hard. The method is best adapted to steep dipping, tabular or lenticular ore bodies but may be applied to ore bodies of almost any shape if their vertical extent is appreciable. It can be used with dips that are too flat for successful shrinkage stopes and can be modified for use with slushers on dips below about 40". Initial mining at the Copper Canyon operation consisted of sublevel stopes for the wider ore sections and shrinkage stopes for the narrow sections where ore widths averaged about 15 ft. After some experience and a study of comparative results on completed stope blocks, sublevels were substituted for shrinkage stopes even in the narrow ore widths. Practical stope lengths depend upon the character of the walls and the continuity of values within the ore body. Where blocks of low grade or waste are included in the stoping limits, these areas can readily be left as pillars for intermediate wall support and longer stope lengths may be planned. Raises can be spotted in narrow or low grade areas and stope lengths adjusted accordingly. Stoping Details To illustrate stoping details, assume that we have an ore shoot 15 to 30 ft wide and about 200 ft long, with walls that would stand over a stope length of 80 to 90 ft (Fig1). PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENT Preliminary development for sublevel stoping would be simple. It is anticipated that many future uranium mines in Australia will be using the in situ leaching mining process. It is fair to say that close to one third of uranium production will be generated by this method, whilst the other two thirds will fall on the uranium generated from hard rock mining and other mining methods, such as traditional open cut mining. For other types of deposits the in situ leaching mining method will remain the best technological, commercial and environmental alternative. It is important to identify and prevent all risks involved in uranium mining. The expertise in this subject is limited. Over the years there was only one mine using the in situ leaching process for uranium extraction in Australia. Computer simulation of propagation of leachate during and after the uranium in situ leaching is a crucial factor, not only for addressing the environmental concerns, but also for the most efficient recovery of the deposit. The decontamination can be modelled for a period of up to 100 years, with the acid neutralisation forecast for a period of up to 400 years. The results of the modelling are paramount for definition of the reserves, efficiency of the mining method and the environmental impact statement. The accuracy of the hydrogeological modelling and carefully selected environmental management program enables a mining company to quantify and minimise the impact of the mining activities on the regional aquifer and to prevent environmental disasters. In the study, the completed hydrogeological model allowed the client, the authorities and the community to make an informed decision about the environmental impact of the in situ leaching of uranium. In particular, the model proved that neither during the mining, nor during the neutralisation the toxic elements would interact with the local catchment area.
