During the past five years, chemical modelling work at the University of Toronto has elucidated the role of soluble magnesium on the autoclave acidity and has demonstrated why feeds rich in magnesium, and other divalent metals, require more than the stoichiometric requirements in acid to produce a leaching performance comparable to that of low magnesium feeds. This understanding has allowed the calculation of acid additions to the pressure acid leach (PAL) on a less empirical basis. Optimizing acid additions to the PAL confers savings in neutralization costs, ensures high productivity and minimises corrosion problems. Hence, our picture of the solution chemistry inside the autoclave during the PAL process has been substantially improved and is reviewed here. Experimental techniques based on solubility and direct acidity measurements that support the theoretical predictions are presented. Concepts of chemical modelling of electrolyte systems at high temperature and software issues are also discussed. Finally, a better understanding of the solution chemistry at temperature has led to better kinetics models because all metal dissolution and precipitation reactions are acid driven and controlled. . Therefore, reactor modelling efforts by our group are also presented and a reactor model with very good performance, as compared to pilot-plant data, is also made here. Finally, in spite of the above success in PAL solution chemistry and reactor modelling, significant challenges lie ahead in theoretical data gaps and instrumentation; these are also discussed in this paper. The geostatistical Discrete Gaussian (DG) model is demonstrated to be capable of providing an effective means of implementing change of support for Enterprise-style mineralisation and thus providing reliable global recoverable resource estimates. At Enterprise, sample grade distribution proves to be highly positively skewed, therefore significant deskewing of the histogram and reduction of variance occurs when going from sample to block support. The DG model was experimentally tested in'the Southern Primary Zone (SPZ) at Enterprise, where high anisotropy ratios and pronounced short range structures are observed in variograms. The experimental test was run for a change of support for which the variance reduction was. approximately 60 per cent. This reduction is similar to that predicted by Krige's Relationship ('the volume-variance relationship') for the practical situation of a change of support from 5 m vertical blasthole samples to 3 m x 8 m x 5 m selective mining unit (SMU) blocks. The DG model was found to correctly predict the grade tonnage relationships for a wide range of cut off grades. The experimental test indicated that, given a representative histogram and variogram, the DG change of support provides a computationally efficient and practical means of reliably assessing global mineable resources at the early stages of a mining project. Further, it allows a range of selectivity strategies to be meaningfully and comparatively considered prior to mining.

Previously published experimental data showing that both collectable and non-collectable sulfide films may be formed on chrysocolla were analysed, and chemical mechanisms were proposed for the formation of the films. A special technique was developed by which the quantity of sulfur adsorbed was determined for samples sulfidized under different conditions of pH and soluble sulfide concentration. The data on sulfur adsorption were used together with the expression for the equilibrium constant for the proposed reaction to indicate the validity of the chemical mechanism theory. A recent paper 1 about contact angle studies on chrysocolla reported the effects of pH value and sodium sulfide concentration during sulfidization upon the character of the surfaces produced. In each experiment the surface of a specimen of chrysocolla was prepared by grinding it with fine abrasive and washing it in tap water. The specimen was then placed in the sulfidizing solution for 10 min, rinsed in tap water, treated for 15 min in a solution containing 30 mg of potassium amyl xanthate per liter, rinsed in distilled water, and tested for air adhesion in a contact angle apparatus. The results, when plotted as in Fig. 1, showed an island representing conditions giving air adherent or collectable surfaces surrounded by conditions giving non-collectable surfaces. Particular interest may be attached to the region of non-collectability to the right of and above the island in Fig. 1, and to the boundry curve separating these two regions. It is apparent that at any pH from 4.0 to 6.0, where a collectable surface may be produced, a sufficient increase in the sulfide concentration results in a non-collectable surface. Thus it appears that too much soluble sulfide has a depressing effect upon the mineral, just as it has in sulfide flotation. This paper presents some speculations regarding the chemical mechanisms by which the collectable and non-collectable sulfide films may be formed and reports on a physical-chemical study intended to support these speculations. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The experimental results presented in the previous paper were analysed in several ways in an attempt to understand better the chemical mechanisms involved. For several points on the boundary to the right of the region of contact in Fig. 1, molar concentrations of H+, OH-, HS-, and S= ions, as well as various ion concentration products, were calculated. A hydroelectrochemical technology has been proposed and experimentally proven for processing metallic gold- and silver-containing concentrates on the basis of copper and copper alloys obtained as a result of preliminary physico-mechanical upgrading of electronic scrap. The proposed technology is based on hydroelectrochemical leaching of scrap using reversible electric current and diluted nitric acid solutions, containing complexing agents, permitting complete separation of gold from the nonferrous matrix without involving gold in the process, and dissolving copper, zinc, lead and tin virtually without any emission of nitrose gases.

These include: seismologic methods, various kinds of shock blasting, torpedoing, and injecting water under high pressure.

THE increased use of heat-resistant alloys (26 per cent Cr, 12 per cent Ni; 16 per cent Cr, 35 per cent Ni; 12 per cent Cr, 60 per cent Ni; etc.) in recent years has been accompanied by continued demands by the consumer for improvement in properties. The manufacturers of these materials, of necessity, have resorted to more critical studies of the basic causes of variations in fundamental properties. To keep pace with the need for augmented information, previous techniques of investigation have been refined and new test methods and instruments created. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the apparatus, experimental technique and precision of measurement that were employed in the exploration of properties of heat-resistant alloy presented in a companion paper.? The detailed precautions in experimental procedure essential for attainment of accurate and comparable data at elevated temperatures cannot be too highly emphasized. THE CREEP TEST Since the fundamental concepts of creep testing have been recognized for the past 20 years, present interest is restricted to refinements in equipment and experimental procedure. The creep-test laboratory constructed for the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Co. is designed to permit 1000-hr. tests in the temperature range of 1200° to 2200°F. with a choice of applied stress extending from 50 to 50,000 lb. per sq. in. in increments of 50 lb. per sq. in. To simplify the calculation of weight combinations, the loading beams (Fig. I) are provided with counterweights to eliminate the tare. The precision of the knife-edges (10.1 ratio) is such that a 10-gram weight placed on the upper specimen grip will be exactly balanced by a 1-gram weight attached to the loading shackle. Check of the loading weights proved the maximum error to be 0.06 per cent. Axial alignment is provided by crossed knife-edges in the grip seats. The furnaces are similar in design to those of Crane and Company, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Steel Corporation. An 80 per cent Pt, 20 per cent Rh No. 19 B. and S. gauge wire is used as the heating element. The details of construction are shown in the radiograph reproduced in Fig. 2. The windings are held in place on an alundum tube with alundum cement; the distribution of turns is adjusted to give a maximum temperature gradient of ± 1°F. over a 4-in. gauge length (Fig. 3). To modern civilization the platinum metals are of inestimable value. Their distinctive properties, both physical and chemical, render them indispensable in an age in which the processes of the laboratory are becoming an essential part of the daily life of the world. Generally, their function, though vital to particular processes, is not spectacular, and so remains unknown to all except the operators. Early Methods of Manufacture The properties of platinum were recognized as of prime importance for scientific work at a very early date, probably between 1750 and 1760. The difficulty of making articles from it seemed almost insurmountable, because no means of attaining the temperature necessary to melt it were known at that time. It is true that solid platinum could be obtained by fusing the metal with a more volatile metal such as arsenic, which was subsequently driven off by baking, but such a method, at its best, would give only a very brittle product, which was totally unsuitable for the purposes for which it was intended. Little, if any, progress could be made until it was discovered that platinum sponge, heated to white heat and hammered in an iron or clay mold, would metallize and retain the shape of the mold. This was a process that could not be wholly satisfactory but from it developed the method of pressing the sponge in a mold and forging it at white heat into wire or sheet. At present a somewhat similar process must be used for fabricating articles of tungsten, molybdenum and other metals of high fusing point, as with these metals we face today the same problems that the scientists of the eighteenth century encountered with platinum, but possibly the next significant advance in the metallurgy of these metals will be the devising of means to melt and cast them. TO some extent this method of preparing platinum has survived, particularly in Europe. There are one or two objections to it, but they are not serious, as they can be surmounted with proper precautions. In the first place, the material is spongy and its millions of cavities contain entrapped air. Unless this is removed by thorough forging above 1000" C. the resultant sheet shows blisters. In planning its production and investment activities the mining industry has generally paid too little attention to perceptive analysis of its market environment. The nature of world economic difficulties over the past decade is not a mystery. Essent- ially prolonged affluence has engendered a false sense of security and fostered entrenched vest- ed interests hostile to economic change. The overall outlook remains poor. For mining projects mineral demand affects both product prices and the availability of specific sales outlets. Long-term projection of demand is complex and a key to success is concentrating on analysis of fundamental deter- minants and avoiding mindless extrapolation.

To maintain longwall continuity, NRE Wongawilli Colliery extracted the approximately 20-year-old Thompson Mains and in doing so, 20 roadways were holed into during longwall retreat. The orientation of these roadways with regard to the longwall face varied between (i) a parallel alignment where the entire roadway was simultaneously subjected to a significant increase in vertical stress on holing and (ii) a more favorable high angle of alignment, meaning that only a portion of the roadway was subjected to an increase in vertical stress on holing. In addition, the longwall holed into and was recovered in one of the existing roadways. The geotechnical environment presented several additional challenges during longwall retreat. The orientation of the stress field resulted in a major horizontal stress notch on the maingate and an elevation in the major horizontal stress in front of the longwall face during the retreat up to an adjacent goaf edge. The presence of geological structure zones also resulted in both swings in the major horizontal stress direction and increased levels of roof deformation. The gate road support designs were based on commonly accepted strata management techniques and principles. The support designs in the hole-through roadways were based on empirical design models generated from (i) aconceptual geomechanical model of pre-driven hole-throughand recovery roads and (ii) a worldwide database on pre-driven hole-throughand recovery roads. Imperative to the success of extracting the panel was a sitespecific strata management process. In this regard, consideration was given to the following: roof displacement monitoring in the gate roads (in particular, Longwall (LW) Acceleration Position), roof-to-floor convergence monitoring in the hole-through roadways, the ability of the mine to limit downtime prior to and during holing by utilizing an Authority to Mine (ATM) type process, and the use of Trigger Action Response Plans (TARP).

The mine and concentrator of Cyprus Anvil Mining Corporation are situated in south-central Yukon, some 120 miles north of Whitehorse. The large lead-zinc concentrator employs conventional crushing and grinding , followed by differential flotation, to produce selective lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a mixed lead-zinc (bulk) concentrate. Since the commencement of operations in 1969, the concentrator has undergone expansions and modifications which have increased the capacity to 10,000 tons per day, and afforded some metallurgical improvements.

"The use of cut-off-walls (COW) for the open pit coal mines has been used for decades. They have been used to reduce the negative hydraulic impact to the surrounding area caused by the open pit mining. The pile-guided trench cutting system is a worldwide unique technique, originally developed by the engineers of the mining companies themselves. It guarantees a continuous, joint free, COW during a continuous installation process. At this specific site in Welzow, this technique has been pushed to new limits in order to address the local lake region. Depth capability has been designed to about 430 ft (130m), proven are already depth of about 360 ft (110m) at a constant trench width of 39 inch (1000 mm). This project is approximately. 6.8 miles (11 km) long of COW, scheduled to be completed in 12 years period. About 2.05 miles (3.3km) have been installed, which is equivalent of about 3.5 Million ft² (330,000 m²). The system flushes special clay which forms a filter crust at the inner surface of the trench. Only natural clay resources used, in order to achieve the cut-off effect (colmation effect). The paper explains the installation process of the cut-off-wall as well as the equipment systems developed specifically for this project. After a successful start of the first phase of the project, the next step in the advancement of the equipment is already underway to enable the installation of greater depth to approximately 490 ft (150 m +) and beyond. The next generation equipment system is scheduled to start operation around 2018 INTRODUCTIONThis Serbian saying “Bóh je stworil Lužicu a cert je zaryl brunicu – God created Lusatia and the devil buried brown coal underneath it.” captures local communities’ ambivalence towards lignite.Lusatia is an almost entirely flat stretch of land between the Elbe and Neiße rivers dominated by glacial sands. On the surface, the heathland and woodland is hardly noteworthy. However, three large lignite mining regions, two in Brandenburg and one in Saxony, in the east part of Germany, divert the attention to underground level, down to depths of up to 120 meters. Here, seams crisscross the earth like ribbons. They were formed in the Tertiary around 17 million years ago.The mining of the lignite started almost 200 years ago. To enable open pit mining, a suitable dewatering system was required. At first, wells and drainage system were used. With the increasing demand to go deeper to enable full use of the existing resources with greater mining depth, a decision taken back in the 60th of the last century, the amount of water which had to be pumped increased dramatically. In peak times, approx. 1.57 Billion cubic yards per year (1.2 Billion m³/year) had to be pumped. This led to a lowering of the groundwater level for up to 230 ft (70 m), impacting the regional lake landscape. In order to reduce the influence on the water balance, and bring the water level back to pre1970th, a first development took place to implement the use of specific COW system to depth of about 147 ft (45m)."

"Introduction In 1925 the Bureau of Mines published as Technical Paper 346 a discussion of typical crude oils of the Western Hemisphere. That paper was one of a series of surveys of typical crude oils, and was the first of these to deal with properties of crude oils from countries other than the United States. The paper contains comments, tabulated data, and individual analyses of crudes typical of the producing districts of Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru; for comparison, it also has analyses of typical crudes from the chief producing districts of the United States.The Bureau of Mines undertook a study of foreign crude oils for two reasons: First, foreign fields are potential sources of supply for the United States; in fact, considerable quantities of some foreign crudes have already been imported. Second, these oils are very similar in physical and chemical properties to oils found in the United States, and a study of these resemblances has scientific value.After the publication of Technical Paper 346, the attention of the Bureau was called to the fact that the two analyses of crude oil from Venezuela which appeared in that paper were not completely representative of the production of that country. Samples of other types of oil were procured through the cooperation of Mr. R. Ogarrio, manager of the Texas Petroleum. Co., Huston, Texas, and officials of the following companies operating in Venezuela; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., Creole Syndicate, and Venezuelan Gulf Oil Co.. Samples were collected and dispatched by Mr. D. 3. Park, representative in Maracaibo, Venezuela, of the Texas Petroleum Co. The value of the interest and cooperation of these agencies in obtaining the samples is gratefully acknowledged."

INTRODUCTION Today, conventional raise boring is an accepted method of development in underground mines and on major construction projects. Over the years that this technique, and its associated machines and tools, have been under development, many articles have been written on the subject. To a great extent, these papers have reported operating results of one or more specific projects or have been generalized reviews of state-of-the-art machines and tools. This paper is intended as a review of the technique from an operational standpoint. Conventional raise boring, as opposed to the related variants box hole drilling and underground blast hole drilling, is a two step process consisting of the pilot hole drilling and reaming cycles. This author has covered the subject of pilot hole drilling in another article (1) . A good review of the current machines and equipment has been presented by Monroe (2) and an overall review of this entire technology was published by E&MJ (3) and Mining Journal, April, 1983 (4) . The subject of the reaming cycle is presented here together with some of the technical aspects of how the drilling tools are intended to be used. Over the past quarter of a century, the success of the hydrocyclone as a classifier in closed circuit grinding installations has permitted the introduction of the cyclone into virtually all fields of wet industrial processing. Research and experience gained in these applications have established the optimum cyclone sizes and designs necessary to provide the required performance. Although cyclones are used in widely diverse liquid-solid applications, their use for ultrafine separation clearly demonstrates the importance of a familiarity with previous case studies. Krebs Engineers is firmly dedicated to serving the process industry and has acquired the unsurpassed knowledge and experience to handle all types of separations and classification problems. Cyclones have been used for a number of applications to make what might be considered fine separations. A typical example is in an iron ore grinding circuit where a 381 mm diameter cyclone will classify an overflow product to 85% -44 micron. There is no question that this is a fine separation, but still finer separations are possible, and these are known as ultrafine separations.

The Port of Shekou is situated at Shenzhen Bay on the east side of the Pearl River estuary. Geological condition of the site is quite complicated. On top of the sea bed, there is a layer of soft silt 8 - 14 m thick. Under the soft silt, there are intercalated layers of sand, silt and clay. Average surface elevation of the underlying undulatory weathered bed rock is about - 20 m, with a variation of about 10 m. In certain locations, the weathered bed rock is covered with a layer of silt 3 - 4 m thick. This paper gives brief account of three types of wharf structures which are of particular interest, constructed in the last few years: (A) Platform type wharf structure with frontal sheet piling and steel raking pile in the rear; (B) Relieving Platform type structure with steel sheet piling and inclined anchoring HP pile ; (C) Steel pipe pile row supported apron added to a marginal quay. Average construction time of a deepwater berth is about six months.

The 1963 Jackling Award lecturer describes the founding of Banner Mining Co. and its trials and tribulations before becoming an established firm. Such aspects as geological description of Banner mining areas, history of exploration and production, areas of present interest to the company and research work conducted by the company are included. Several years ago a wealthy Chinese business friend of mine purchased an interest in a proposed oil well to be drilled a great distance from his home. A few months later it came in as a producer and proved to be a huge success and materially added to his resources. I asked him why a man of his wealth should be so lucky in a venture outside his sphere of knowledge when most people of modest means never seemed to get ahead. His answer was, "Fat Hoy takes a chance." Even though this was his answer, I knew from my association with him that there were other tempering considerations which Mr. Hoy applied before making up his mind to enter any transaction. First, he was a cautious individual. He was also a great believer in details and insisted on knowing everything possible about a situation, and finally, he was what we call a very solid individual with good basic instincts and judgment. This philosophy of Mr. Hoy may be applied to most any business but especially to those engaged in a search for natural resources such as mining where great risks are involved. This article concerns events in the history and growth of Banner Mining Co., with which I have been associated for 27 years in capacities from mine surveyor to vice president. Mr. Hoy's philosophy has played a significant role in the exploration projects of this company over the years, but what is more important, the officers, directors, and controlling interests in Banner have been aggressive in their search for ore reserves. THE BIRTH OF BANNER Banner Mining Company was incorporated in September 1935 by a group of Oklahoma and Texas oil men for the purpose of exploring and developing the Bonney-Manilla mines at Lordsburg, N.M. These properties had a history of intermittent production since the first ore discoveries as far back as 1870. Most of the production from the district has come from four mines, namely, the Eighty-Five, the Atwood, the Bonney-Manilla, and the Misers Chest. The last two are now owned by Banner Mining. The Eighty-Five mine operated between 1885 and 1931, and production totalled 1,494,287 tons averaging 0.11 oz of gold per ton, 1.23 oz of silver per ton, and 2.80% copper. The vein extended for a distance of about 3000 ft northeast and was mined to a depth of 1650 ft. The Atwood mine, adjoining the Eighty-Five mine, to date has been of lesser importance as a producer, but it has been operating for several years producing high silica flux ores for a smelter. Production totalled 352,828 tons up to January 1, 1962 From the Bonney-Manilla and Misers Chest mines, owned by Banner, production through 1961 totalled 2,006,343 tons with an average grade as mined of 0.0192 oz of gold per ton, 0.760 oz of silver per ton and 2.63% copper. Banner built a 150-tpd flotation mill in 1936 after almost a year of development on the 600 level of the Bonney mine. After less than one year's operation, it became apparent that the 150-tpd rate was not sufficient to make a reasonable profit due to the marginal grade ores. The low tenor of the ore, mainly chalco-pyrite in a highly siliceous gangue, made mandatory the close control of costs in order to make ends meet. A 300-tpd unit was added to the mill in 1937, and it is still the operating unit today. The clean sulfides presented no problems in milling. A metallurgist doing research on it at the time stated that the copper minerals seemed to have a built-in desire to float. Mill recovery of copper throughout the 27 years of operation has averaged 96.23%. A PERIOD OF FORCED GROWTH World War II brought many hardships to Banner. Labor and supply shortages caused drastic curtailment in development work. Rapidly rising costs far outdistanced any relief from pegged prices which we received from Government agencies. In both laboratory flotation experiments and from analysing the composition of the lead concentrate at the Boliden Tara lead-zinc mine in Ireland, it has been found that F-250 may replace cyanide as a pyrite depressant. Replacement or reduction of the cyanide consumption is highly desirable from a safety perspective given the toxicity of cyanide. Scrutiny of results from the plant trial indicate that F-250 is less efficient as a cyanide depressant when the flotation feed contains high levels of pyrite. Statistical analysis of the results does not capture this trend, illustrating a need to collect more data at higher pyrite ore levels. A recent model proposed for biopolymer-induced pyrite depression is reviewed and discussed next to the suggested mechanism for pyrite depression via cyanide. Review of the interactions causing pyrite depression point to different manners in achieving depression. In light of the less efficient F-250 pyrite depression at high pyrite levels, it is speculated if the two depressants may act synergistically at high levels of pyrite in the feed. The oil shales located in the Appalachian Basin cover an eight-state area of the eastern U. S., and are referred to as Devonian (black) shales. These shales have been exploited for their gas potential for several years. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) has conducted research since 1972 on the production of shale oil from the Devonian shales, and this resulted in the development of the HYTORT process. This process demonstrated that the yield from the Eastern oil shales can be greater than the value indicated by the Fischer assay method. IGT estimates that 423 billion barrels (67.3 x 109 m3) of oil could be recoverd by HYTORT processing of surface-minable eastern U. S. shales. Recently American Syncrude Corporation and Southern Pacific Petroleum N. L. have proposed oil shale projects in Kentucky. This paper will describe the surface mining and retorting techniques that have been studied for exploitation of the Devonian shales, and enumerate the problems that have to be overcome before commercial production can be realized from these shales.

BUMPS in No. 2 Mine, Springhill, N. S., furnished the main feature for discussion at the morning meeting* on Ground Movement and Subsidence on Feb. 18. Walter Herd, the author of the paper by which the discussion was introduced, not being well, was unable to be present. The paper was presented by T. L. McCall, who laid stress on the presence of sand- stone as the cause of bumps, on the value of retreating longwall in eliminating such phenomena at the coal face and on the advantage of wide headings with packs on either side, leaving space behind them for any coal that bumps might dislodge. George S. Rice, who presided, referred to his visits to the Nova Scotia mines and said that bumps usually occurred only where the coal was thick and strong and the roof and floor both more than usually hard. If any of the three were weak, bumps were not likely to occur. In the Nova Scotia mine, to which Mr. Herd referred, there was no material for packwalls and for this reason as well as for safety he had been convinced that long- wall retreating with a small percentage of pack walling was the most feasible plan.
