It has been claimed (Eadington and Rosser, 1969) that when freshly precipitated lead sulfide is in contact with oxygen-containing water, there is an "induction period" of at least a few hours during which no detectable oxidation of the lead sulfide takes place This effect would be of the utmost importance for the adsorption of xanthate on galena in flotation mills. It was tried here to reproduce the results obtained in (Eadington and Rosser, 1969), but no "induction period" was found. Besides, reasons are given to prove that the oxidation mechanism proposed by Eadington and Prosser (1969) is not realistic.

Some time after my arrival in Rock Springs to fill a short engagement with The Union Pacific Coal Company, Mr. Dickinson informed me that he had placed me on the program for a paper entitled "Mechanical Loading in Indiana." Since development of mechanical loading operations on a genuine coal producing basis for that section began near Oakland City, Indiana, and rapidly spread over Southern Indiana, Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois simultaneously, the results referred to are in many ways common to all three states. Prior to December, 1922, several attempts at mechanical loading had been registered, notably among which were installations of the Jeffry Entry Driver, and the Meyers-Whaley loader. The object of most of these earlier installations was quick development rather than lower production costs in face loading. In this measure it is claimed the machines were at least partially satisfactory. Three items which seemed to delay rapid progress in the adoption of either machine were, excessive first cost, height of coal seam necessary, and timidity of the operator relative to the labor situation which might develop. When the Joy machine was put on the market in the form of the 4-B.U., with a clearance overall which would perform in coal slightly under five feet in height, and at a cost price of less than one-half that of other machines being sold, many operators were at once ready to take a chance along with the manufacturer. This desire was accentuated by the difficulty to operate coal mines at all at prevailing production costs. This condition also made the coal miner more receptive to machinery which would give added employment to the field. At the convention held in Cincinnati during May, Mr. .Joy stated that about 200 of his machines were in operation at that time. Mr. Whaley said that about 40 of his were in use in coal mines. It is probable that of the above sum 75 machines were installed in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Since that time, possibly 50 more machines of later design have been added. Like many of our troubles, those which seemed most difficult to overcome, proved in the end to have been least of all, and in this case the sup¬posed resistance which labor would advance has been more or less imaginary. In Illinois and Indiana a scale of wages is being accepted which is consistent with average earnings of machine men. The fact that a large number of coal operators want and are buying more loading machines has encouraged mining machinery manufcturers on every hand to devote renewed vigor to the cause and it is generally understood that new types and models are being developed both in factories and mines with the coal industry eager always to see the latest development. I understand that at present the Goodman, the Jeffry, and the Sullivan machinery companies are each offering new designs to meet Indiana and Illinois requirements. It is not strange that with so many installations many were made as a result of an impulse to ride the band wagon without any serious attempt to study the results or draw any conclusions from the experiences of others with loading machinery.

Geostatistical methods of estimating ore reserves and other spatial phenomena are becoming increasingly wide spread in their use. Properly applied, Geostatistical estimation falls into two stages -- the "modelling" of the spatial variability within the study area; and the use of this spatial model to provide an appropriate estimation technique. The first stage usually consists of construction and interpretation of semi-variogram graphs, and the second is the development of the corresponding Kriging method. Because of the apparent subjectivity inherent to the first stage of a geostatistical analysis, attempts have been made to provide methods of "testing' whether a particular semi-variogram model (say) adequately represents the study area. Increasingly, the choice of model is being justified by a process known as "Cross Validation'. With this approach, the analyst uses a partial data set to estimate values at actual sampled positions. "Real" and "estimated" values are then compared in such a way that the model can be accepted or rejected. This paper discusses the process of cross validation in some detail, using case studies as examples. Some problems with the technique are illustrated and discussed.

This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

"A simplistic algorithm jar simulating the rod or ball mill Bond grindability test applied to ores and minerals is presented. A performance comparison between the present algorithm and a previously published algorithm by Kapurot, modified in this work jar a fair evaluation, is also given. A worked example is furnished jar leading the reader through the various calculations.IntroductionThe Bond grindability test is widely used for the prediction of the power requirement of an industrial grinding mill. The procedures for conducting this test in either a ball or a rod mill are available(1). In the case of a ball mill, batch grind abilities have been correlated to Bond grindabilities to help monitor day-today variations in ore grindability for the purpose of plant control( 2,3). Of special interest is the algorithm presented by Kapur(3) for the simulation of the Bond test. In practice, the test lasts from 6 to 14 cycles (4 to 10 hours). With this algorithm, one can predict the Bond grind ability using information available from only the first two cycles.Sometimes the prepared feed for the grindability test contains too much fines compared to the total product desired at the mesh of grind under consideration. In such a case, the operator separates the fines from the test feed and adds to the remaining coarse fraction an equal amount of fresh feed. This combined feed then forms the feed to the first cycle of the test. In the present work, Kapur&apos;s algorithm is modified to include this special case. A new and relatively simpler algorithm is also presented. Statistical equations relating work index to pertinent variables are also given."

During the past six years, most states have promulgated water quality regulations which contain numerical aquatic life standards for heavy metals. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) promulgated national water quality standards in 1992 which also include numerical aquatic life criteria for heavy metals. Numerous wastewater discharge permits have been issued by the states and EPA to industrial facilities which include low microgram per liter heavy metal limitations. In many instances, the limitations are below detection limits or treatability limits using state-of-the-art analytical methods or treatment technologies. This paper will discuss options for conducting studies, including the use of water-effect ratios, metal partitioning coefficients, and recalculation procedures to develop site-specific metals criteria and higher permit limitations. The installation of expensive metal treatment systems to remove trace metals may be avoided if higher permit limits are indicated by the site-specific studies.

In the 1980s and?90s the gold mining industry in South Africa came under pressure from the continued poor dollar gold price and escalating Rand based costs, furthermore the external impacts on the industry were changing. Thus, the Chamber of Mines (COM) shifted its focus away from many historical areas of support towards the new industry challenges in safety and health, labour markets, environmental responsibility, mineral rights legislation and social responsibility. During 1997 the lack of funds and the changes facing the tertiary institutions were often subjects of discussion at the various sub-committee meetings. The Metallurgical Sub-committee of the Chamber Education Fund or the Sub-committee of Consulting Metallurgists as it was known identified the need for the funding structure to change with the times. Up to this time the Chamber of Mines operated an Education Fund that supported mining industry academic departments at various South African tertiary institutions; these funds were derived exclusively from the country?s gold and coal mines the basis of Chamber membership. Funds of less than R5 million per annum were available for distribution by the three disciplinary sub-committees of mining, metallurgy and geology.

This compilation of statistics covering competitive fuels consumed for heating of residential and commercial buildings is in response to numerous requests for data of this nature to show the relative changes in the demands for the different fuels in recent years. Correlation of Air Recovery with Thin Film and Froth Stability in Flotation

Froth flotation is an industrial process commonly used for the separation of mineral particles. Bubbles sparged in a pulp collect and carry hydrophobic particles to the top layer of a flotation cell, the froth zone. There is a strong correlation between the stability of the froth phase and the flux of solids. However, flotation units placed in series operate, as a whole, in a non-steady state regime with the concentration of particle decreasing from one cell to the next resulting in a decrease in froth stability, which can compromise the recovery of valuables. Organic chemical reagents, frothers, are generally added to prevent fine bubbles from coalescing and to increase the stability of the froth phase. Frothers represent the second largest group of mining chemicals. It is crucial to understand the resulting properties of the frother on the froth phase in order to select the most suitable reagent for a particular operation. The bubble coalescence dynamic of three different surfactants, 1-pentanol, poly (propylene glycol), and tri (propylene glycol) methyl ether, were investigated in this study. In the first stage, the stabilisation mechanism of bubbles in a solution of surfactant was investigated using a specifically designed experimental setup. The coalescence behaviour of bubble pairs was recorded using high-speed video imaging in which information such as the coalescence time and the deformation of the resultant bubble upon coalescence could be extracted. The results were then compared between the different surfactants for several concentrations. It is shown in a study that the coalescence time increases with surfactant concentration until the Gibbs-Marangoni effect is suppressed by bulk diffusion. Conversely, the oscillation of the resultant bubble was found to be affected only at concentrations at which the film is saturated. The implications of the effects of surfactant type and concentration on the coalescence time and bubble oscillation in froth flotation are discussed. THE spitzlutte, as described by Rittinger, is an instrument by which sand is sorted in a continual upward-flowing stream of water. Its usual form is that of a pointed box, placed with the point downward, the box receiving its feed of sand and water on one side and discharging its tailings on the other. The sorted product or concentration is discharged at the bottom, at the apex of the box, through which it falls against an upward current -of water, which current serves to effect the sorting and separation. To make this exposure to the quicksand condition still more effective, an inverted dam is placed across the spitzlutte, which forces the sand in its passage from the feed side to the discharge to pass down into the more active portion of the upward-flowing current of water. In the form adopted for small tests in the mining laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (see accompanying sketch) the feed is through a central funnel instead of being at the side, and the apex of this funnel, extending down nearly to, the apex of the cone, takes the place of the inverted dam in the large spitzlutte. To keep the experiment perfectly under control a bulb or bottle is attached by a rubber connecting-tube to receive the concentrations, and between this bottle and the apex of the spitzlutte is placed -1 glass tube of conical form, with a side tube for the admission of water. By regulating the admission of water through this tube the concentration may be allowed to go down into the bulb as fast or as slowly as the richness of the ore seems to demand. This spitzlutte may be used on products that have been previously sized to take out the heavy mineral. As, an example of this a test was made upon a&apos; sample of ore where the galena, blende, and quartz were much mixed up, but separated fairly when crushed. The sample of ore was from Newburyport, and assayed 16.50 per cent. lead.. After sizing through a series of sieves the ore yielded concentrations and tailings to the spitzlutte as follows

The CMC-3 new generation system for continuous methane monitoring enables on-line measurement of methane concentration within the range of 0-100% CH4 with a great autonomy of operation. In principle the system has been worked out in the asspect of hazard detection in mines endangered with rock and gas outbursts. But after last crash in the Halemba colliery, according to the recommendation of the after-accident committee, the system was directed to this colliery for operational tests. The paper describes construction and functions of this system and gives some results of tests conducted at the Halemba colliery. The results point out the necessity of using monitoring equipment of continuous operation in mines of high dynamics of methane emission. INTRODUCTION Commonly used in Polish coal mining the methane monitoring systems of CTT/63/46 Up or CMM-20 and CMC-1 type are based on cyclic measurements with 4-minute repetition of measurements. This period has been stated sufficient from viewpoint of methane emission dynamics under normal exploatation. In these systems, automatic switching-off electrical power is performed by the surface station, i.e in case of detecting exceeded concentration value the station generates control pulse signal which actuates the switchng-off devices CRA and IZZO. Such a way of disconnection causes a considerable time delay, up to several minutes, in electric power break at hazardous areas. In the methane monitoring system with the new CMC-3 station, the different phylosophy of operation has been applied. Measurement of methane concentration is performed in a continnous way. In case of exceeding the alarm value, immediate control of the IZZO unit directly by methane monitor follows and consequently energy break without necessity of communicating with the surface station. Alarm values are set directly in methane monitor. The system ensures central powering of underground equipment from the surface, and in case of power failure the methane monitor equipped with battery operates autonomously for about 12 hours. Such an extention of the methane monitor funtionality has been achieved thanks to the use of internal microprocessor controller. The system with the CMC-3 station has been worked out in the aspect of methane hazard detection in mines exposed to gas outbursts. But after last gas explosion, according the desicion of the After-accident Commitee, the system was installed in the Halemba coliery where it underwent operational tests. Besides

Toe paramagnetic susceptibility values at various temperatures were determined from toe slope of toe magnetizing curve. These values were then compared with toe theoretical values estimated using toe Bohr magneton numbers for toe paramagnetic ions contained in toe missesotaite.

The subject will be discussed in the broadest sense and references will be made to the four sections that compose the overall field of surveying operations from the air. These are: 1. Aerial photography and photo-graphic mapping. 2. The use of airborne electronic instruments for geodetic distance measurement and the determination of ground elevations. 3. THE growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. Historically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treatment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European universities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with the university departments of the other sciences.

Previous gas well test analyses have been based mainly upon linearizations of ideal gas flow results, although a method for drawdown analysis based upon real gas flow results has been proposed. Linearizations based upon ideal gas flow require estimation of gas physical properties at Tome sort of average pressure, and implicitly involve the assumption that pressure gradients are small everywhere in the reservoir. A new real gas flow equation has been developed by means of a substitution which couples presTure, viscosity and gas law deviation factor. This sub-stitution has been called the real gas pseudo-pressure. Use of the real gas pseudo-pressure leads to simple equations describing real gas flow which do not contain pressure-dependent gas properties, and which do not require the assumption of small pressure gradients everywhere in the flow system. Equations required to determine flow capacity, well condition and static formation pressure from pressure drawdown and build-up tests with the real gas pseudo-pressure concept are presented. Also shown are applications of the real gas pseudo-pressure to back-pressure testing, the gas materials balance and rigorous determination of average gas properties for previous gas flow equations. Included are sample calculations for well test analyses. INTRODUCTION A recent study&apos; of the flow of the transient flow of real gases in ideal radial systems showed that it is possible to consider gas physical property dependence upon pressure by means of a substitution called the real gas pseudo-pressure. The substitution has the advantage that it enables engineering solutions for steady and transient flow of real gases that are more accurate and general than those previously available. The solutions are particularly important for the case of gas flow in tight, high-pressure formations under large drawdowns. Even for more ideal flow conditions, the real gas pseudo-pressure concept leads to important rules for finding average gas physical properties pertinent for older well test analyses. Ref. I provides a detailed study of the theory behind the real gas flow correlations to be used in this paper. The purpose of this paper is to provide necessary engineering forms for use of the real gas flow results, and to illustrate applications. The following considers flow of real gases in an ideal radial flow system. It is assumed that: (1) formation thickness, porosity, water saturation, absolute permeability, temperature and gas composition are constant; (2) gas compressibility and density are functions of pressure as described by the gas law pv = znRT; (3) gas viscosrty is a function of pressure; (4) effective permeability to gas may be a function of pressure to account for liquid condensation; (5) condensate is immobile; and (6) the formation has no dip.

SEVERAL very interesting articles have been written on the caving system of mining, but most of these papers have dealt separately with the slusher system or the chute and grizzly system. In this paper, a comparison will be made of the two methods, both of which are being used at the Climax mine. The mine is on the Continental Divide, in central Colorado, at an altitude of approximately 11,500 ft. above sea level. The long, cold winters, characteristic of the high Rockies, create a number of operating problems not usually found in other mining areas. THE ORE BODY The Climax ore body is just east of the Mosquito fault. This structural deformation has brought the granite on the east against the sedimentary rocks on the west. The ore occurs in an intensely altered granite and schist around a silicified granite core. The ore is in a highly fractured zone of moderate silicification. The principal mineral, molybdenite, is found in these fractures. Barren dikes of granite porphyry cut through the ore body and core with no apparent regularity. The grade of the ore is fairly uniform and gradually decreases toward the footwall core and also into the hanging-wall granite. The footwall and hanging wall are determined entirely by assays. The ore body is roughly dome-shaped, with the apex truncated at the surface. It is covered to varying depths with talus. A horizontal section of the ore body on the Phillipson level appears as an annular ellipse surrounding the footwall core. The ring of ore varies in width from 300 ft. to as much as 800 ft. The north-south axis of the core is about 1200 ft. and the east-west axis is about 1800 ft. In the ore zone, the rock is sufficiently strong to maintain reasonably large openings, and openings larger than haulage drifts usually have to be supported. The ore is cut by a great many fractures and shears and breaks into rather large blocks when caved, necessitating considerable secondary blasting. The waste that overlies the ore body breaks relatively fine in comparison with the size of the blocks of the caved ore and tends to run through the broken ore in the cave, causing dilution unless the draw is carefully controlled. MINING SYSTEMS For several years the ore was mined by the chute and grizzly system, a system that differs from that used in other caving mines only in the size of openings and equipment.
