When ore bodies are faulted or mill feed turns refractory, mining managers and engineers act vigorously to convert imminent failure into eventual success. The recent proliferation of onerous "environmental" regulations and restraints is likewise a threat to successful mining enterprise, in some ways more insidious and dangerous than the problems presented by natural obstacles. The regulatory burden has become so heavy that a pall of pessimism covers much of the mining enterprise. In this paper we frankly recommend a Pollyanna approach, making not just "the best of it" but directing the whole environmental process: first, to improve our planning, engineering, and operating procedures; and, second, to demonstrate the need for modification of laws and regulations which are intolerably burden-some to both the mining industry and the public. It is customary for government officials and environmentalists to point out how great are the new environmental regulations and how successfully these have improved the natural environment in particular and the quality of life in general.

H. L. Burghoff.*—Have the authors any information on the effect of grain size in these materials? There is a material difference in the grain sizes shown for the Monel and the Inconel. Is a wide range of grain size normally found for each material, and, if so, what is its effect upon creep strength? 11. L. Eiselstein.—The grain size for Monel shown in the micrograph is the usual size found in that product. The grain size of Inconel is about the same as that, too. However, we have run tests on Inconel at higher temperatures than those reported in this paper, and have found that the coarser grain size has a better creep resistance; and that the grain size that gives the best creep resistance at 1600°F. is about 0.005 in. in diameter. We have no test on Monel with varying grain size. J. J. KANTER.†-It has been known for a long time that Monel metal exhibits ductility anomalies at elevated temperatures. Even in short-time test, it can be demonstrated in the range of 900°F. that there is a distinct falling off of the ability of Mone1 metal to elongate, and in rupture tests this shortcoming is still further accentuated. Knowledge of this rupture anomaly of Monel metal may be one of the reasons for which designer's approach certain high-temperature applications with reservations. The authors of this paper have merely demonstrated that for 900°F. the alloy has an ability to elongate 1.7 per cent over a period of some 2700 hr. Before any conviction can be expected from designers that Monel metal is applicable to stress design in such range of temperature, I think it is desirable to demonstrate the capacity for the material to elongate over a longer period of time than has been done in this presentation.

There were 63 fatalities in the California petroleum industry in 1929, the largest number in any year since 1923 and an increase of 34.0 per cent over 1928, when 47 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. It will be observed from the accompanying chart that after following a consistent decline for 4 years, the fatality curve turned upward in 1923 and advanced sharply in 1929. Although this increase in fatalities coincided with a period of intensive development it tends to indicate some laxness in the industry during a period of increased hazards. Intensive drilling campaigns are usually started hurriedly and conducted with a great demand for speed, and the result is that accident-prevention work is too often relegated to a position of minor importance.

"This paper provides an understanding of interpreting and evaluating airborne time domain electromagnetic (TEM) surveys as applied to massive sulfide exploration. Variations in the conductive morphologies of massive sulfide ore systems are discussed, followed by forward modelling exercises examining the derived TEM response to these morphologies and discussion of the subtleties of data interpretation. Deposit morphology in the orientation at formation and the variations occurring due to later deformation are considered. Images of corresponding resistivity–depth models are provided. The combined modelling results provide a low-cost method for initial interpretation and screening of TEM anomalies. RÉSUMÉ Cet article nous permet de mieux comprendre l’interprétation et l’évaluation des levés élec-tromagnétiques aéroportés en domaine temporel (TDEM, de l’anglais time-domain electromagnetic) appliqués à l’exploration du sulfure massif. Y sont débattues les variations au niveau des morphologies conductrices des systèmes de minéralisation du sulfure massif, suivies d’exercices de modélisation prospective qui examinent la réponse dérivée des TDEM à ces morphologies et d’une discussion sur les subtilités de l’interprétation des données. L’étude envisage la morphologie de l’orientation originelle non déformée des gisements ainsi que les variations résultant d’une déformation ultérieure. Des images des modèles correspondants de résistivité-profondeur sont fournies. Les résultats combinés relatifs à la modélisation proposent une méthode peu onéreuse d’interprétation et de contrôle initiaux des anomalies dans les TDEM.INTRODUCTION Electromagnetic geophysical surveys are an indispensable foundation of many mineral exploration programs and can account for as much as half of the predrilling exploration costs. Quantitative mass interpretation of the survey results remains difficult due to the infinite variation of deposit morphologies, their complex physical properties, and the presence of barren conductive materials that can mimic or mask the response of targeted ore. Many modern geophysical investigations that focus on time domain electromagnetic (TEM) data interpretations are devoted to problems with inversion and modelling and their algorithms. Although a few of these investigations have resulted in commercial software products, these require highly qualified and experienced users and usually include geometric assumptions. Furthermore, without the input of known physical properties and geometric constraints, the inversion results are highly ambiguous. A number of case studies document the geophysical responses to known targets in well-defined and diverse geo-electrical environments, providing a high degree of correlation between field obser-vation and the results of the modelling used in this style of investigation (Hone, 1980; Schneider & Emerson, 1980; Tyne, Idnurm, & Malone, 1981; Bishop & Lewis, 1992; Hopgood & Hungerford, 1994; Meju, 2002; Yang & Oldenburg, 2016). The uniqueness of the target/environment parameters and their specific features limits the use logy is poorly understood. The responses are therefore that are devoid of complicating environmental factors (e.g., highly conductive overburden and hostrocks or nonuniform target conductivity) as a first approach to the interpretation process of such case studies as the main reference for interpreting TEM survey responses in areas where the underlying geomodelled from generalized and typical geological models"

Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) is located in Menlo Park, CA. In order to allow for enhanced experiments, the current facilities required expansion. Tunnels were excavated through very weak sedimentary rock interspersed with uncemented zones (Ladera Sandstone) employing the principles of the NATM. The overburden var-ied from 10 to 80 feet. The paper addresses the characterization of Ladera Sandstone that can exhibit the properties of dense sand and weak rock. The paper focuses on the challenges that were encountered during the NATM initial support design and the construction phase including the geotechnical instrumentation, monitoring and design verification process in particular the excavation of the junction between access tunnel and the FEH cavern (49 ft wide by 32 ft high).

Although several recent papers have shown that equilibrium contact angle in dodecylamine solution-quartz systems can often be directly correlated with flotation behavior, it appears that under conditions of relatively high amine strength and pH such a correlation can't be made. Under these conditions, when there are precipitated amine dipoles present, it appears that a dynamic contact angle formed immediately after introduction of fresh gas bubbles into the system is also of importance. The dynamic angle decreases in magnitude as a function of time. Apparently the decrease is the result of changes in interfacial tensions (liquid-gas and solid-gas) as a function of time. Dynamic angles of the type described can't be observed in trimethyldodecylammonium chloride solution-quartz systems. Several recent papers1-3 have shown quite conclusively that contact angle data can often be correlated directly with flotation behavior in cationic surfactant solution-quartz systems. At the same time, Iwasaki, Cooke, and Colombo4 have shown data for a dodecylammonium chloride solution-goethite system where, in the vicinity of pH 12 and a collector concentration of 10" M, 100% flotation occurs when equilibrium contact angle appears to be zero. A clue to this discrepancy can be found in the work by smith2 who reported the occurrence of dynamic, time dependent, contact angles in a quartz-dodecyl-amine solution system at relatively high pH values and at surfactant concentrations greater than or equal to 10-4 M. It was found that under these conditions, if a fresh bubble was brought into contact with a properly conditioned and polished quartz surface, a large angle was obtained. The large angle, however, instantly started to diminish in magnitude, sometimes to a smaller stable angle and sometimes to its complete disappearance. Also, if the bubble was preconditioned for some minutes (or sometimes even seconds) in the same amine solution, the smaller or sometimes zero stable angle was obtained when the bubble was brought in contact with the quartz surface. One is immediately led to the thought that perhaps it is these dynamic angles when they exist, not stable angles, that are of primary importance in flotation. "Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mines to use refuge alternatives (RAs) to provide a breathable air environment for 96 hrs. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the heat and humidity buildup inside an RA. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress or even death. MSHA regulations require that the apparent temperature in a fully occupied RA must not exceed 95°F. To investigate this issue, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. The test results showed that the average measured air temperature within the RA increased by 9.4°C (17°F) and the relative humidity (RH) approached 94 %RH. The test results were used to benchmark a thermal simulation model of the tested RA. The validated thermal simulation model predicted the average air temperature inside the RA at the end of 96 hours to within 0.6°C (1.0°F) of the average measured air temperature. INTRODUCTION If an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who fail to escape from the mine can enter an RA for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the potentially adverse thermal environment inside an RA from the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress, heat stroke, or even death. In its 2007 report to Congress, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) recommended that RAs should be designed to ensure that the internal apparent temperature (a temperature-humidity metric) in an occupied RA does not exceed 35°C (95°F). However, a standard method to determine compliance with this metric does not exist. The heat transfer process within and surrounding an RA is very complex, and is not easily defined analytically or experimentally. To investigate the related issues, OMSHR conducted heat and humidity testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. During the testing, numerous parameters were measured: heat input to the chamber, the air temperature and relative humidity inside the RA, the air temperature in the mine, the mine strata temperatures versus depth, and the airflow inside and outside the chamber. The focus of this paper is on the temperature rise within an RA. TAITherm heat transfer analysis software was used to develop a thermal simulation model of the RA as it was tested in the mine, using the test results as the benchmark. Both sensible and latent heat were used in the test and the model."

The superconducting behavior of Nb-Ti alloys containing 40 and higher wt pct of Nb and variable oxygen content was studied as a function of thermomechanical processing. Critical current density (Jc) us applied transverse magnetic field (H) data were obtained for 0.010 in. diam wires at 4.2° Kin steady fields up to 120 kOe. The precipitate responsible for increase in Jc in each of the alloys studied was related to niobium and oxygen content. In alloys containing 40 to 60 wt pct Nb with less than about 1600 ppm of oxygen, w precipitation in the range 350° to 450°C appears to be responsible for the maximum value of Jc observed. In alloys of higher oxygen content (-2500 ppm), the oxygen-enriched a phase which precipitates in the temperature range 450° to 550°C is a more effective fluxoid pinner. Maximum Jc in low oxygen (350 ppm) 80 wt pct Nb alloys was achieved by 600°C aging heat treatments. Measurements of resistive critical field also reflect the changes in composition accompanying precipitation in these alloys. It is well known that the superconducting critical current density, Jc, of solid solution superconducting alloys can be increased by precipitation heat treatments.1-4 The precipitate, to serve as an effective superconzlucting fluxoid pinner and increase Jc, must be of proper size and spacing.' Its electronic properties must also be different from those of the matrix.6 As in age-hardenable systems, optimum temperature and time of aging are dictated by the composition and history of the particular solid-solution alloy under consideration. The alloy diagram of Ti-Nb7-9 shown in Fig. 1 is typical of ß-stabilized Ti alloys. Precipitation to achieve high Jc in Ti-Nb and Ti-Ta alloys is usually carried out in what is believed to be a two-phase a + ß region.1,2,4,10 Previous work on Ti-Nb4,11 and on other ß-stabilized systems such as Ti-V, Ti-Mo,12-14 has shown, however, that the first precipitate to appear is not necessarily (Y. Under specific conditions the meta-stable w phase is precipitated instead. A further complication arises in such alloys from the strong influence of contained oxygen on the phase stability and on the kinetics of precipitation.15,16 The superconducting critical current density of Nb-Ti alloy containing less than 36 wt pct Nb has been studied by Vetrano and Boom1 and Kramer and Rhodes.4 The most effective aging temperature was found to be about 425°C; fluxoid pinning was attributed to the precipita- tion of a by Vetrano and Boom and of w by Kramer and Rhodes. Although the latter workers used recrystal-lized material and the former cold-worked, studies carried out in our laboratory lead us to believe that the type of precipitate responsible for increased Jc is unaffected by prior cold-work.17 That other types of precipitates may also be effective, especially in higher oxygen-containing alloys, has been demonstrated by Reuter, et al.2 in this laboratory with the aid of electron microscopy. Reuter et al. found that at an aging temperature of 600°C, fee-TiO is precipitated, resulting in high values of Jc. Even higher values of Jc were observed after heat treatment at 500°C, but the precipitate could not be indexed as fee-TiO. Whether the precipitate was oxygen-rich w or a could not be clearly distinguished. The work nevertheless indicates that appreciable amounts of oxygen alter the nature of the phases precipitated at different temperatures, at least in alloys containing more than 36 wt pct Nb. Since such compositions are more readily worked into suitable wire than lesser niobium content alloys, it was decided to study the response to aging of the alloy compositions reported in the present paper with the hope of clarifying the effect of composition on the precipitation processes responsible for high values of Jc. I. EXPERIMENTAL Nb-Ti alloys containing 40, 50, 60, and 80 wt pct Nb were prepared by are-melting 35 g ingots of iodide crystal bar titanium and electron-beam melted niobium.

"While not taking issue with the general thesis expressed in Dr. Ridge's analysis of the role of genetic concepts versus observational data in ore exploration (Ridge, 1983), the criticism could be offered that the author tends to slight the importance of conceptual (i.e. theoretical) models in mineral exploration.As a general rule, observational data in science lacks significance and utility without a theoretical construct to organize those observations. Theory in turn dictates what observations are made-and which ones are judged important. Thus, for example, prior to the elaboration-and acceptance- of the current model for volcanogenic base metal deposits, the structural aspect s of these deposits were most closely observed and studied by explorationists. The nature of the enclosing rocks and any attendant alteration was given minimal attention, and certainly didn't figure prominently as an exploration guide.Similarly, the importance of alteration features to exploration for porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits was only perceived when a theoretical model was developed to account for these aspects. Indeed, many of these porphyry copper deposits were regarded as epigenetic vein deposits by geologists of an earlier era observing and examining on a different physical scale-and with a different theoretical bias.In constructing and evaluating such conceptual models, explorationists primarily rely on observation data and proximate associations; speculative thoughts as to ultimate provenance or crustal evolution clearly play a subordinate role, as Dr. Ridge argues. This, however, should not obscure the fact that concepts and theories do indeed exert a major influence in mineral exploration."

Combustion synthesis or self propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction systems are discussed with respect to thermodynamics and kinetics. In particular, tile effect of the process parameters, ego particle size, AHf, ignition and combustion temperatures on these self sustaining reactions is discussed. Combustion theory is used to investigate the effect of the overall activation energy of the SHS reaction on the combustion front propagation rate and in obtaining a clearer understanding of the transition from stable to unstable propagation. Finally, examples of the application of combustion synthesis to advanced materials processes are made, in particular the synthesis of Ni-Ti -X intermetallic shape memory alloys, TiC-Al2O3 and ZrB2 ?Al2O3 ceramic composite materials.

Detailed examination of the Sloan Ranch diamond prospect has shown that the Sloan 1 diatreme, the Sloan 2 dike, and the Sloan 3 horizontal sheet complex are all parts of the same kimberlite complex. Geologic mapping, geophysics, soil chemistry, test pitting, and drilling all helped to delineate the structure. Bulk sample testing yielded moderate grades with encouraging gem-to-industrial ratios, but no large stones were recovered. These test results, along with supporting mineral chemistry data, suggest that the Sloan Ranch complex is analogous to sub- economic occurrences located near the margins of the Archean cratons in southern Africa.

UNDER the name of the Russian Far East we understand the territory occupied by the Amur, Maritime, Sakhalin and Kamchatka Provinces, the total area of which is about 918,000 square miles. The mining industry took its first step in the Russian Far East in the second half of the 19th century, and until the end of this century was restricted to gold placer mining. In the last years of the 19th century, the extraction of coal and lignite was begun, and in 1910-11 the exploitation of silver-lead-zinc mines. The conditions of the Far Eastern mining industry during the last few years may be outlined by the following figures. Annual production of gold mines was about 54,000 lb., valued at $13,000,000. During the period of 1910-15 a considerable increase of placer-gold mining by mechanical processes took place; in 1910, by means of dredging and excavators, 500 lb.. of gold were obtained; in 1914, 2740 pounds. Annual output of coal; lignite and. silver-lead-zinc ores was: 1911 1920 Bituminous and semi-anthracite coal, long tons 270,000 316,000 Lignite, long tons 66,000 205,000 Silver-lead-zinc ores, long tons 28,400 94,500 In other branches of mining in the Far East, only the quarrying of building stone and clay may be men-tioned, the total yearly output amounting to about $500,000 in value. The principal gold mines are in the Amur Province, in the systems of the Zeia and Bureia rivers, and in Kamchatka Province, near the town of Okhotsk. The above-mentioned tonnage of coal and lignite was extracted from the mines in the Maritime Province, near Vladivostok. The only silver-lead-zinc mine worked was that of Tetiukhe, near the Tetiukhe Bay, 240 miles northeast of Vladivostok. The ores of this mine were exported to Germany, Belgium, and Japan, partly raw, partly calcined.

"The mode of occurrence of sulfur and mercury in 57 Chinese bituminous coals have been examined using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Zeeman atomic absorption mercury spectrometer. Mercury levels in coal are related to the geographic location of the coals and types of the coals. A synthesis of result indicated that most likely occurrence modes of mercury in high-sulfur and high-mercury coals are in solid solution in pyrite. Our study from 57 coal samples showed that most values of mercury concentration in coal varied from 100 to 1000 ng/g with an average of approximately 500ng/g, and mathematical model about correlation between mercury and sulfur was gained by mathematical statistics. This is apparent that mercury and sulfur vary concomitantly from coal data (table 3) , the high correlation between them in all coals at confidence of 95% ( a=0.05 ) .1. INTRODUCTIONThere contained about one trillion ton abundant coal resources in China. As a leading level of proven coal reserves in the world, the coals mainly distributed in north China and northwest China, especially in Shanxi, Guizhou, Shanxi provinces and Inner-Mongolia autonomous region. At the same time, China has the largest production and consumption of coal, and has the output of coal nearly accounted for 37 percent of the world's production. Coal-fired power plants are the major source of energy generation in China, and the proportion of coal combustion is up to 75 percent in the total energy configuration. Therefore, the mercury pollution caused by coal-fired has become a topic of wide-spread discussions since 1990. The contamination of mercury of human activities accounted for 10 to 30 percent [1], and the mercury emissions of coal-fired flue gas has made the greatest contribution to the pollution of atmosphere[2] In the past 30 years, the global increasing concentration of mercury pollutant in atmosphere maybe result from coal combustion[2]. The mercury emissions caused by coal-burning has become the main reason of China's mercury pollution, and the characteristics of mercury pollution is closely related to China's energy configuration, additionally, the features of mercury pollution have changed from the point pollution in 1970's to diffused pollution today[3]. Mercury can be found in various types of coals, and it is evaporated into gas phase during the combustion process."

In his time on earth, man has mined about 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) of gold. About one-half of this has been produced in the past 35 years. Roughly one-third of this gold is held as reserve in Central Banks. One-third held is in personal reserves. And one-third is held as jewelry or other fabricated products. The world per capita availability of mined gold is increasing. There are many forces shaping gold's future. Gold currently has a favorable exchange ratio. This is encouraging many new gold mining developments. Production is increasing and new recovery techniques are surfacing. The use of gold in the financial markets is increasing in some unique ways. And gold is again fulfilling its role as a universal money, making its future predictable. Gold Today Man is currently mining gold at the rate of about 1.4 kt/a (44 million oz per year). This adds about 1.5% of newly mined gold to the total supply each year. This production plays a small role in the pricing mechanisms since much of the 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) mined is available to the market in some form. The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (Worsley) and is located 110 km south-east of Perth, Western Australia. The gold mine, which has operated since mid-1987, was originally constructed to treat 3 Mtpa of gold bearing oxide ores, has subsequently been expanded to treat 7 Mtpa and is presently one of the largest gold producing operations in Australia.During 1990 a Supergene/Basement Plant was constructed to treat 250 000 tpa of copper supergene and hypogene ores and basement ores which contain significant gold grades and which are encountered at the lower levels of the existing oxide orebody. The SupergeneBasement Plant has the versatility to treat a wide range of ore types, producing both gold bullion and copper-gold concentrates. It is a stand-alone facility adjacent to the existing 7 Mtpa gold plant.

Gasoline is undoubtedly of major importance not only to the petroleum refiner but to the producer. To study the economic aspects of gasoline is, in a measure, a constructive effort to solve the problem of overproduction not only for the refiner but for the entire petroleum industry. After all, the prime object of producing crude petroleum is to supply motor fuel and lubricants to nearly 25,000,000 American motor vehicles, not to mention the increasing demand for these products abroad. Since gasoline furnishes the chief source of revenue to the refiner, it follows that this important product should veritably become recognized by all branches of the petroleum industry as an almost infallible index of day to day requirements of the producer and the refiner. A careful study of gasoline statistics over the past decade or more reveals that there is a definite correlation between world-wide gasoline requirements and the demand for crude petroleum, as well as all other petroleum products. This leads the writer to the conclusion that gasoline is literally the economic yardstick of the entire petroleum industry. Control of Operations That the refiner has begun to recognize the urgent need for controlling his operations is evidenced by the results of the past three years. Unfortunately, it is a difficult problem to convince the refiner that he cannot run crude in excess of the demand for gasoline, without incurring a consequent decline in the market value of this and all other products of distillation. Undoubtedly, he still has much to learn in this respect. Few commercial products have enjoyed such phenomenal growth in demand as has gasoline, and, at the same time, few products have failed, as has gasoline, to reap financial benefit from the popular demand for a national necessity. Small-mine and contractor Fatal Incidence Rates have been a problem for over 20 years in the coal industry, and the rates persist as unacceptably high. This paper briefly retraces historical information and data on the continuing problem and recounts the many unsuccessful efforts and initiatives to address the problems effectively. Next the results of a review of international literature on addressing the problems are presented. After focusing on a method to pinpoint the trouble spots more specifically through a nested data analysis, suggestions are provided on how the problem may potentially be addressed more systematically and effectively in the U.S.

The T. L. shaft of the Eureka Corp., Ltd., near Adams Hill, Eureka, Nev., was sunk in 1954 and 1955 to permit exploration and development of the lead-zinc-silver ore that had been indicated by drilling. This paper describes the sinking of the 4-compartment, vertical shaft to a depth of 1,127 feet and includes pertinent details of equipment, methods, and costs. A shaft crew of 10 men, supplemented by 13 hoistmen, topmen, carpenter, and shop crewmen, sank and timbered the 1,127 feet of shaft in 630 workdays. Total labor per foot of shaft was 107.95 man-hours. Supplies per foot of shaft included 20 pounds of explosives, 1.61 pounds of drill steel, and 200 board-feet of timber. Power consumption, including that required for pumping, averaged 3,726 kw.-hr. per foot.

The rare earths market is relatively small and slow growing. Three applications using mainly cerics rare earths : catalysts, glass-ceramics and metallurgy are volume market. Inside this slow moving frame, fast growing niches can be found lamp phosphors, permanent magnets, fine cera- mics... There is no specific ore for one given element, and the natural occurence of any ele- ment is almost constant in both monazite and basnaesite. This creates the "balance problem" that consists in the best compromise between shortage and over production. The general trend of prices is downward in constant money. Despite this difficult environment (price decrease, technology changes, etc...) lots of company have always been attrac- ted by the rare earth business.
