Lead removal has been problematic in nickel production by electrowinning from chloride solutions, as developed by Falconbridge. The C12 leach liquor needs to be diluted by electrolyte to allow precipitation of the lead prior to electrowinning. This results in higher solution purification costs and an aversion to consider lead contaminated (secondary) feeds. In this paper, the electrowinning of nickel chloride is carried out in a membrane equipped electrolytic cell. When lead containing nickel solutions are fed into the anode compartment and the anolyte is separated from the catholyte with a cation exchange membrane, lead remains in the anolyte due to the presence of a negatively charged chloride complex. The positive nickel ions migrate preferentially through the membrane to the catholyte, allowing a lower lead nickel cathode to be produced. Lead concentration in the catholyte and the cathode product has been tested as a function of lead concentration in the anolyte. Results are presented and discussed.

THIS paper will include a brief discussion of Prof. Howe's paper on The Supposed Reversal of Inheritance of Ferrite Grain Size from that of Austenite.1 The general subject of grain refining in steel and iron will also be treated. The conclusions reached are stated in the following hypotheses which are discussed more in detail below. 1. The ferrite grain size in pure iron, the ferrite and pearlite grain size in hypoeutectoid steel, the pearlite grain size in eutectoid steel and the cementite and pearlite grain size of hypereutectoid steel are not inherited from the grain size of the mother austenite. 2. The only structural feature that is generally inherited from the austenite of hypo- and hypereutectoid steels on cooling through their transformation ranges is the position of the excess ferrite or cementite at the austenite grain boundaries, sometimes causing complete and sometimes incomplete networks which outline the old austenite grain boundaries. Rapid cooling through the transformation range will cause the non-inheritance of this structural (network) feature. 3. The austenite grain boundaries themselves are nearly always effaced in all steels and also in pure iron during the Ar transformations. 4. The grain-size refining of steel and iron is brought about by the combined. effect of non-inheritance of the transformation products on either heating or cooling, i.e., the austenite transformation .products do not inherit their grain size from the austenite on cooling through the transformation range for does austenite inherit its grain size from the products which form austenite on heating. 5. In general, in both iron and carbon steel the larger the austenite ,grain size, the larger will be the grain size of the transformation products on cooling. This, of course, assumes all other conditions constant except the austenite grain size. An exception is found to this general rule in very pure iron such as electrolytic iron. 1n this instance small austenite grains may form very large ferrite grains on cooling through Ar3.

Introduction Rockfalls occur when rocks or boulders detach from mountains or hills and tumble down. They can pose significant hazards to infrastructure such as highways, buildings, and mine open pits, and they sometimes result in personal injury or death. Prediction of rockfalls is a difficult task. Slopes that are at risk of rockfall have highly variable geometries. The location, mass, and shape of the rocks that might dislodge and fall are uncertain. Moreover, the materials that make up a slope can vary considerably from one section to another. Furthermore, the relevant material properties are usually not well known. Performing probabilistic simulations of rockfalls, combined with proper statistical analyses, has proven to be an effective and acceptable method for dealing with these difficulties [1, 2, 3]. The movements of a falling rock can be classified as freefall, bouncing, sliding, toppling, or rolling. The falling trajectory is controlled mainly by the geometry of the slope, the block shape, and the energy dissipated at each contact of the block with the slope. A rockfall model is evaluated based on its ability to efficiently predict the velocity, frequency, height of bounce, and run-out distance of falling rocks. With this information, the engineer can design remedial measures such as restraining nets and ditches. Most of the existing rockfall simulators are based on particle models that consider the falling rock as an infinitesimal particle with a mass, called the lumped mass or stereomechanical models [1, 2, 3, 4]. Other models involve hybrid methods relying on simplified assumptions. The most common hybrid methods are based on contact searching for the movement of a dimensionless object and incorporate some aspects of rigid body impact for bouncing [5, 6, 7]. There are also some rigid body models in the literature that employ simplified versions of rigid body models [8, 9]. This study applies a more sophisticated rigid body theory based on rigid body impact mechanics (RBIM), which was developed by Stronge [10, 11, 12]. The new theory captures all modes of rigid body movement. Due to the importance of the rock geometry, single impacts of ellipsoidal and prismatic rocks with rectangular cross sections are investigated. The effect of rock slenderness on rebound velocities and energies is also investigated for ellipsoidal rocks. The correspondence between the model parameters and the data from the rockfall literature data will be discussed.

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) IN the case of The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company v. The Richmond Mining Company of Nevada, recently tried at San Francisco, California, the real defendant was the Richmond Consolidated Mining Company, of London; but this being a foreign corporation, holds its mining property in Nevada through the Nevada corporation of similar name, in which the London Company owns all the stock, except the few shares necessary to "qualify" the American directors. The trial would naturally have taken place in the Circuit Court at Carson City, Nevada, and before a jury. But by stipulation of the parties, the case was tried in San Francisco, before Hon. Stephen J. Field, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Hon. Lorenzo Sawyer, United States Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit, and Hon. E. W. Hillyer, United States District Judge, for the District of Nevada. The hearing began July 23d, 1877. The witnesses occupied two weeks, and the argument of. counsel three days. Very eminent lawyers were. engaged on both sides ; for the plaintiff, Messrs. Solomon Heydenfeldt, R. S. Mesick, John Garber, and H. J. Thornton ; for the defendant, Messrs. S. M. Wilson, Thomas Wren, and J. J. Williams. The court held the case under advisement until August 22d, when Mr. Justice Field delivered its unanimous opinion in favor of the plaintiff. The action was a complaint in ejectment, and an appeal was taken to the United States Supreme Court. The questions at issue between the Eureka and the Richmond Company in this suit, comprised several points in the construction of the mining law of the United States, and its relation to the customs and regulations of the mining districts, which possess an importance and an applicability far beyond the limits of the case in which they arose. The effect of engine parameters on exhaust emissions from two diesel engines was studied experimentally. Fuel-injection characteristics and intake air conditions were considered as parameters influencing the emissions. Emphasis was placed on the effect of parameter variations on nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, because diesels generally emit very low levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons. Emissions other than NOx were at lowest levels when the engines were adjusted for best performance. NOx emissions can be diminished somewhat through variation in fuel-injection characteristics, but there generally are penalties in emissions of CO, smoke, and unburned hydrocarbons or in engine performance. Temperature and composition of intake air have a significant effect on NOx emissions. Levels of NOx are reduced by recirculating the exhaust gas or by adding water to the intake air stream. However, the rate of water added or exhaust gas recirculated must be limited to prevent the degradation of engine performance and increased emissions of CO and smoke. At high exhaust recirculation rates, levels of CO and smoke were increased such that it was necessary to derate the engine and also to use a catalytic system for oxidation of CO.

Landfills containing house hold waste produces methane gas during its decomposition. This gas can be recovered and used for heating purposes or as fuel for vehicles. Gas drainage pipes are installed in the landfill and connected to a central suction point. Methane gas is produced over several years until the slots in the drainage pipes are clogged by black mud. And the bottom of the vertical drainage pipe are filled with mud and water. The hypothesis tested in this paper is if blasting in the drainage pipes could activate the production and flow of methane. In the first part of the paper we have studied what maximum linear charge concentration could be used in different size of PE-pipes place vertical on surface and surrounded by air. The results show that the maximum linear charge concentration for single blasts varied between 5-10 g/m, depending on the diameter of the pipe (90, 100 and 160 mm). Maximum charge concentration for the repeated blast varied between 2-5 g/m. In the second part of the paper we study what maximum linear charge concentration could be used in situ for full scale blasting tests in a special prepared test area which later on was dug out after the blastings. Up to 40 g/m could be used without damaging the top of the 160 mm diameter pipes. The increase in methane flow was so low so it could not be measured c4.5 m3/h. The conclusion therefore is that the stimulation of methane flow by explosives is not enough.

The total systems model for underground oal mining planning and design is a set of omputer programs which encompasses a realis- ic reproduction of the interaction between he geological, environmental, equipment, meth- ds and the health and safety aspects of the ining plan. The total system includes nine ajor subsystems - Geology and Reserves, Meth- ne Generator, Roof Support, Subsidence, Pro- uction, Rail Haulage, Cost, Water Generator, nd Ventilation. The subsystems themselves re divided into two categories based on the requency with which they are executed. Event riented Subsystems are executed either inde- endently, or at discrete intervals when cer- tain specific events occur. Dynamic subsystems 'unction interactively during the production :ycle. They transfer data to or request data `rom event oriented subsystems only when spe- ific events occur. Three specific areas for iodel application are in the measurement of system performance, the development of the '_ nterrelationships of the components of deep Wining process and the evaluation of new and Lnnovative mining technology.

This study explores two evolving 3D surveying technologies, photogrammetry and laser scanning, and applies them to deformation monitoring of rock faces and mine highwalls. A quantitative analysis focused on 3D coordinate determination is performed. Furthermore, a qualitative assessment directed at the practicality and viability of each system operating near a rock face or in a mining operation is undertaken to reveal one systemÆs deficiencies over the other. Two photogrammetric and four laser scanning surveys aimed at optimising accuracy and precision within a short period of data acquisition are conducted on the rock face at Organ Pipes National Park, Keilor, Victoria. The accuracy and repeatability of each survey is determined using a combination of iWitness photogrammetric, and Cyclone laser scanning software. The 3D coordinates of targets placed on the rock face are determined by triangulation and resection principles within a bundle adjustment. The coordinates determined by each system are then compared in a 3D transformation. Controlled deformation conditions are established to determine the precision to which each system can detect movement in the rock face. An object of known dimensions is placed on the rock face to simulate deformation. The relative orientation of images taken for the pre- and post-deformation photogrammetric surveys provide an overall 3D point accuracy of 1.255 mm and 1.804 mm respectively. A 3D transformation shows discrepancies of less than ¦22 mm (RMS) between the geometry of the photogrammetric and laser scanning models. Both systems are able to detect the simulated deformation to a precision of 50 mm. This work also identifies how to obtain millimetre accuracy for 3D coordinate determination of rock faces, thereby providing a quality data set for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists. Photogrammetry is shown to be a mobile, time and cost-effective technique that is more amenable to mining operations than terrestrial laser scanning. However, both systems demonstrate that they are capable of detecting movements that may lead to failures in the rock face, and possibly endangering human life. The implications are significant for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists working in mining operations where enhanced safety conditions, increased productivity and lower operational costs are important considerations.

Sooner or later in the development of any natural resource it becomes highly desirable to know the quantity of this resource in the country as a whole, as well as of the part that is being developed, for the general course and conduct of the development work must be governed, to some extent, by the total supply available. An accurate estimate of the quantity of any natural resource is difficult to make; yet if one is diligent enough one can obtain a pretty accurate idea of the quantity of marketable timber, the acreage of tillable land, or the horsepower that may be developed from the streams, for these are things that may be measured. But any attempt to estimate the quantity of some mineral in the ground appears to enter the realm of imagination and it seems that the estimate can be nothing more than a blind guess. It may appear to be especially futile to attempt to determine the quantity of oil and gas that is available in the ground, for these minerals are so vagrant that even if the quantity now available should be known quite exactly, the quantity that will eventually be obtained may be much less, for certain losses in the extraction of both oil and gas are unavoidable, and just what these losses will be cannot be predicted. Though necessarily inaccurate, estimates of such mineral reserves are, however, of distinct value, for they summarize the existing knowledge of the deposits of the mineral and thus enable those who are interested in some industry that depends in one way or another on this mineral to formulate a rational commercial policy. Some time ago, when the price of gasoline suddenly rose in a rather spectacular manner, the writer was one of the U. S. The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering® is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering® is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering® is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. "In spite of their importance to the economics of many metallurgical projects, the values and technical aspects of precious metals losses in smelting operations are relatively undeveloped subjects. This paper attempts to provide a condensed overview of precious metals losses in pyrometallurgy, using some of the limited production and experimental data available. It is intended for three general groups of metallurgists - operators attempting to improve recoveries, cost-accounting engineers making estimates of metal losses in new or modified smelting plants, and research engineers and students.Distribution coefficients of precious metals, the ratios of metal or matte assays to slag assays, are convenient means of comparing smelting processes and the tendencies of the different metals to enter the slag. For silver in lead blast furnaces this ratio is approximately 250;for gold and the platinum group metals in submerged-arc, electric furnaces it is 900. The ratio for gold and PGMs in converters varies with the degree of oxidation of the charge. The over-all cycle-average for industrial installations is tentatively estimated to be 35.IntroductionThe magnitude of precious metal s losses in pyrometallurgical operation s is difficult to assess. The primary producers are generally reluctant to discuss the subject. The by-product producers (the large sulphide smelters o f copper , nickel, and lead) might be more willing to disclose information, but these have precious metals in their feeds in such dilute quantities that accurate accounting is extremely difficult. It is not until numerous processing steps have been taken t hat the precious metals become sufficiently concentrated to permit acceptably accurate sampling and analytical procedures to be followed. Thus, knowledge of the precious metals contents o f the intermediate mattes and slags may simply be unavailable."

The Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the U.S. Department of Energy in a directional degasification project at the Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. This project is designed to combine the highly successful underground horizontal degasification technology with surface drilling methods. The objective of this program is to demonstrate that directional drilling can be used as a technique for degasifying coalbeds ahead of mining to reduce the hazards of methane-air explosions in coal mines. The directional hole at the Emerald mine is designed to start vertically and enter the Pittsburgh coalbed horizontally. A 3-inch-pilot hole entered the Pittsburgh coalbecl at a vertical depth of 999 feet, The hole will be reamed to 8-3/4 inches in diameter, and 5-1/2-inch casing will be cemented in place. Three individual 3-inch-diameter, 3,000-foot horizontal gas collection holes will be drilled into the coalbed in a “bird foot” pattern. A corehole and vertical dewatering hole have been completed at the anticipated coalbed intercept. The dewatering hole was drilled to130 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed, a depth of 900 feet, and 880 feet of 7-inch-OD casing was cemented in place. Seven vertical holes for monitoring the extent and progress of degasification have been drilled within the horizontal drilling area.

In order to predict and minimize detrimental production problems due to the recycling of process water in sulfide ore processing, the influence of major species, calcium and sulfate in process water on sphalerite flotation was investigated through Hallimond tube flotation, zeta potential, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements using sphalerite mineral sample. Assessment of process water species in flotation was done using deionized water, process water and simulated water containing calcium and sulfate ions in experiments. Hallimond flotation shows increased sphalerite float-ability in process water compared to deionized water, but no significant effect on the presence of calcium and sulfate ions in deionized water using isobutyl xanthate as a collector. The presence of calcium ions reduced the sphalerite?s negative zeta potential, while at higher concentrations, a charge reversal occurred, at about pH 11. FTIR and XPS studies revealed the presence of surface-oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species on sphalerite at pH 11.5 in deionized water, process water and water containing calcium and sulfate ions. These surface species do not influence xanthate adsorption.

It is designed to produce a metallurgical coking coal by lowering the sulphur and ash content of the raw coal using a heavy-media cycloning process to treat deslimed crushed coal, with scavenging of fine coal by flotation from the primary minus-28-mesh screen product. A secondary H-M cyclone scavenges a thermal-grade coal from the primary H-M cyclone tailing.

THE following is a brief description of the method of hoisting ore automatically at the No. 14 shaft of Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, Schumacher, Ontario. All ore and waste below the 3875-ft. level is hoisted up No. 14 shaft from the 7000-ft. level to the 3000-ft. level. Seventy to seventy-five per cent of the mining is done in this area. The shaft consists of four compartments: a man way, a ventilation compartment and two skip compartments. The hoist, located on the 3500-ft. level (see Figure l), is an 80-in.-diameter, 4-rope friction winder, utilizing two 6-ton front-dump skips in balance. The hoist is powered by a 1,100-h.p. A.C. motor, the maxi-mum speed being 2,400 ft. per minute. The operation can be either manual, push-button automatic from the pocket, or fully automatic. Men can be raised or lowered in the skips, using a collapsible aluminum platform placed inside the skip box.

The specification for tender nominated the requirements for ore hoisting and servicing; this showed that one common duty winder could be selected. Foliowing the design of the shaft layout, the merits of fixed or rope guides were compared and the latter selected.The specification called for the supply and installation of the complete hoisting system. Construction of the winder tower and shaft bottom steel work had to proceed while mine development was in progress using the sinking winder and headframe. Guide ropes, winder ropes, and the sky shaft were installed in the shortest possible time, and as the shaft was not equipped with ladder-ways, a second means of access had to be provided.Very few problems were encountered witll the commissioning of the winder, and in the first 2 years of operation the only significant modification was to the circuitry associated witll the moving access platforms.Hoist rope tension checking and adjustment are simple, and non-destructive testing has shown no deterioration of these ropes. The operation of the balance ropes has been very satisfactory but cleaning presented problems in the early stages. Guide ropes have been trouble free and require minimum attention.Normal wear on the PVC rope groove inserts on the winder drum has been negligible.Since the commissioning on fully automatic ·control, the winder has operated with very few, minor delays.
