Soil improvement is examined within the context of the characteristics of different soil types, the types of ground improvement techniques that can be used to improve them, and the level of improvements that might be achieved. Several case histories are described to show how the particular soil and foundation characteristics influence the choice and success of different ground improvement techniques. Although the basic methods for soil improvement have been known for many centuries, there have been significant recent advances in the technology for their use. Time effects following the densification of cohesionless soils may lead to significant improvements in strength and stiffness. Unanticipated chemical reactions may follow stabilization using admixtures when soils for which there has been little prior experience are encountered. In some cases foundations that combine features of both ground improvement and deep foundation systems may provide good performance at reasonable cost.

In developing countries throughout the world, gold ores are being processed by mercury amal-gamation, a technique long banned in the U.S. - unless a retort operation is used for mercury recovery - due to mercury toxicity and its effects on the environment. Amalgamation is a simple process that involves contacting a ground, slurried concentrate or ore with mercury in a slightly agitated vessel, usually for several hours, The amalgamated mercury is separated by gravity and then filtered through a fine cloth to collect the gold amalgam as a sponge, which is then fired to remove the final remnants of mercury and produce high quality gold. However, in Peru and other developing countries in South America and throughout the world, tailings are simply discarded into uncontrolled drainages and ponds and the sponge is fired in the open air. Clearly, in this case, environmental friendly and, to make matters worse, is typically conducted by family members of all ages without proper protection. Furthermore, the technique is inefficient, yielding approximately 50% gold recovery. For the past two years, faculty members from Montana Tech in Butte, MT, USA and the Universidad Nactonal del Altiplano in Puno, Peru have teamed to study the La Rinconada Mine Complex located in southern Peru approximately 100 kilometers north of Lake Titicaca and 25 kilometers west of Bolivia. The mining complex is over 5,000 meters above sea level and exists at the foot of a receding glacier in the Andes Mountains. A suite of soil and water samples collected in 2001 documented extensive Hg contamination in the Rinconada area [1]. The present paper summa¬rizes a follow-up investigation in July-2002, in which water samples were collected at numerous locations along the 200 km length of the Rio Ramis, from the Rinconada mine com¬plex to Lake Titicaca, In addition, we report new results of Hg analyses of fish from Lake Titi¬caca, The results of this study have relevance to safety and health concerns for the miners as well as people in downstream communities.

The conversion of nickel and cobalt to the water-soluble sulphates forms the basis of some of the many methods of recovering these metals from their oxide and silicate ores. The applicability of these sulphation processes to a range of Australian oxidized ores is discussed. The chemical and hence mineralogical composition of the ores is shown to have a major influence on the degree of nickel and cobalt extraction. Different sulphation processes are compared, taking into account the influence of ore composition, and considering effects on reagent consumption and on subsequent metal recovery processes.

This paper examines the effects of different block dimensions and cone bases on the economic open pit limit design based on case studies on a coal deposit consisted of two west- east elongated, near vertical thin seams starting with a base model dimension of 200x170x50 (NX*NY*NZ) with a block dimension of 10mx5mx4m (DX*DY*DZ), the blocks were combined along easting, northing and elevation directions. Two cone bases were used, one with a base radius of 10 meters, the other with a base radius of 0. Two pit design algorithms, one is the floating cone algorithm, the other is an optimum algorithm, were used to see which one of the two pit design algorithms is more sensitive to block dimension and cone base variations. The results are presented and analyzed.

En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el sistema de monitoreo, cuyo software sísmico está diseñado para determinar nuevas estructuras formadas a partir de los eventos sísmicos pre existentes reactivadas por la sismicidad inducida, así como el desarrollo de planos de isocontornos que permiten la diferenciación entre zonas de altos y bajos esfuerzos.

Present indications are that the Fourth National Exposition of Chemical Industries, to be held in Grand Central Palace, New York, Sept. 23 to 28, will be the greatest exhibition of its kind ever held. Preparations are well under way and the advisory committee is working hard to make, every department of the affair a success. Men prominent in the chemical and allied industries will speak on subjects vital to present conditions and needs. Dr. C. H. Herty, and Dr. G. W. Thompson, President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, are to make opening addresses. F. J. Tone, President of the American Electrochemical Society; Dr. W. H. Nichols, President of the American Chemical Society, and several others, are expected to make addresses also. Prof. Joseph W. Richards will speak on : ?Ferro-alloys of silicon, tungsten, uranium, vanadium, molybdenum, and titanium." Theodore Swann, President of the Southern Manganese Corporation will speak on "Ferro-manganese." The program for the exposition is in active preparation. There will be a series of symposiums on the "Development of Chemical Industries in the United States, notably since July, 1914." Among other topics for consideration is that of potash development; C. A. Higgins, of the Hercules Powder Company, will speak of the operations of that company in the recovery of potash from kelp; Linn Bradley, of the Research Corporation, on its recovery from cement dust, and other sources, by electrical precipitation. Other symposiums will be devoted to chemical engineering, acids, industrial organic chemistry, the ceramic industries, and the metal industries. Among the speakers are: A. This paper is one of a series comprising the Mineral Industries Survey of the United States, which was begun in 1935. It describes the simple methods of mining and beneficiating manganese ore, in eastern Tennessee and compares these methods with those used elsewhere in the Appalachian region. The report contains general information on manganese to give a clearer understanding of the methods and costs of mining and. beneficiating manganese ore foam a widespread deposit, an in addition presents zone difficulties normally fond in these operations. The marketing, uses, and value of manganese ore are discussed as well as the amount of capital necessary for effective operation on given scale of production, and requirements are outlines for successful operation of manganese, property in this region.

Work in this investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to demonstrate how waste glass might be utilized to lower the required firing temperature and firing time of structural clay products. Mixtures of waste glass and common clays were formed by stiff-mud extrusion and fired to the temperature required to produce a body having 6 to 7 percent absorption. Substitution of glass for one-half of the clay in a red body reduced the firing temperature 500° F, which made possible a 30-percent increase in production; in a tan body, the firing temperature was reduced 400° F, which made possible a 23-percent increase in production.

The midwestern area referred to is the Illinois basin. The coals presently worked are mainly the No. 5 and No. 6 coal seams which vary in thickness from five to eleven feet. Present average of the more important No. 6 id about nine feet. The coal can vary considerably in toughness within the same mine with some coal perhaps rashing very easily and other coal being extremely difficult to cut. Top is generally well laminated shales with some fortunate areas having limestone roof. There are local areas with troublesome top of poorly laminated shales, shale with slickensides and shale intermingled with small partings and traces of coal. The bottoms are generally one to three feet of clay which softens readily on exposure to moisture. The mines are dry although some water is released and collects from rapid penetration of the seam by continuous miners. However, there are locally wet areas. Most of this material refers to mines of the Freeman Coal Mining Corporation. The mining operations written about are underground mines in southern and central Illinois.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry has always been considered to be a comparative method of analysis. Reference materials are required to calibrate the analytical system. This paper describes the use of a set of æsyntheticÆ oxide standards, made from commercially available high purity compounds, to calibrate a spectrometer for 21 major and minor oxides. The spectrometer software uses simple methods of background correction, and a fundamental parameter method of matrix correction. Sample preparation is by fusion in 66 per cent lithium tetraborate, 34 per cent lithium metaborate. The use of synthetic standards, made from traceable compounds, brings XRF significantly closer to being a primary rather than a comparative method. Reference materials were used to validate the method described and examples of accuracy for major constituents are given using ores and other minerals. This method has successfully been used to analyse a wide variety of minerals and ores, as validation data shows. A titanium process example clearly shows the benefits of highest accuracy analysis.

During the past three years, USBM has developed an apparatus and technique for direct measurement of existing pressure and change of pressure in mine rock. This relatively simple and inexpensive monitor is reliable for months after being installed. It is used to determine shift of ground pressure created by different sequences of mining, to ascertain the cause of rock failures, and to evaluate the need for artificial support. The technique has been employed to measure pressures in limestone, greywacke, concrete, diabase, and soft iron ore. When rock is subjected to a load it is deformed. Ordinarily this is observed in a mine as the displacement of one point with respect to another—the deflection of the roof, which may be observed as a convergence between roof and floor; or the extrusion of material from the rib, which may be observed as a decrease of the distance between the rib and the post of a timber set. The effect of excessive pressure may be a rockburst if the rock is strong, or it may be squeezing ground if the rock is soft. Some desirable effects of high stress (high in relation to strength) are the caving of roof in a longwall mining operation, the caving of ore in block caving, and the decrease in mechanical energy required to break down the mineral seam in a retreating pillar-robbing operation. In any case, whether the observable effect of rock load is desirable or undesirable, it is a displacement, and depends on the following four factors: 1) The structure—the size and shape of openings, pillars, and linings, the geologic bedding and jointing. 2) The mechanical properties of the rock—prin-cipally the strength, modulus of elasticity, and flow characteristics. 3) The load or applied stress—primary sources are the weight of superincumbent rock, which increases with depth, and unrelieved tectonic stresses; secondary sources are redistributed pressures caused by other nearby openings, especially large mined out zones (rock pressure depends partly on the rock structure created by mining). 4) Duration of load, related to the length of time the opening is exposed. CONTROL OF ROCK DISPLACEMENT Rock displacement can be controlled by control of these four factors. Consider now the means of exercising such control over these factors. Control of the structural features is obviously possible to a great extent, as such control is exercised largely by choosing the method of mining and the methods of natural and artificial support. Rock properties vary, even within a particular mine, but they are controllable only in the limited sense that control may be exercised by choosing the beds or zones to be mined so that rocks with undesirable properties will not occupy critical positions within the rock structure created by mining. Rock pressure is the most complex of the four factors through which ground control can be achieved because it is invisible, difficult to measure, and poorly understood. Rock pressure is controllable only to the extent that control is exercised on the rock structure created by mining. Considering openings within a particular mine, time of exposure varies, and is readily controllable because it is easily measured and easily understood — the longer an opening stands, the greater the likelihood of failure or excessive convergence. Control is exercised by choice of an appropriate sequence of driving openings of different classes, such as haul-ageways and rooms, which are required to remain well supported for different lengths of time under different conditions. Again, control is exercised through the method of mining. All controllable factors can be controlled by proper design of the mining method. The orientation and relative positions of the mine workings and the sequence of their excavation are likely to be much more important to ground control than is the design of artificial support. This implies that the major decisions in regard to ground control are made, knowingly or not, at the time the mining method is chosen. WHY MEASURE ROCK PRESSURE In addition to restrictions on the several factors, control implies the measurement of these factors in some sense, whether only qualitatively by visual observation, or by actual quantitative determination with a measuring instrument. THE chemistry of clays and shales has been assuming increasing importance in the petroleum industry, and two factors have greatly influenced this trend. The first has been the growing evidence that the marine shales are source beds, and that the petroleum compounds have migrated to the sand reservoirs overlying or underlying these shales: the second has been the demand for drilling fluids better adapted to penetrate these marine shales without difficulty and expense. ORIGIN AND GENERAL COMPOSITON OF CLAYS AND SHALES Clays, shales and surface soils are all closely related materials. They are mixtures of finely divided compounds formed during the weathering of the solid crust of the earth. Their nature is essentially colloidal; that is, their behavior is determined by the state of division of the materials and the surface reactions of the smallest grains. Many of their chemical changes affect only the exposed areas and do not involve the interior of the grains of matter. The extent of these reactions is more nearly proportional to the area of the substances than to their mass, therefore it is possible for a small amount of a material in an extremely fine state of division to completely dominate the character of the mixture. More than 83 per cent of the crust of the earth is composed of three elements-oxygen, silicon and aluminum. Consequently, the corrosion products of the crust are predominantly aluminosilicates, or compounds of aluminum, silicon and oxygen. If we add the compounds of six elements-iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and hydrogen-more than 98 per cent of the crust has been accounted for. These six elements, together with the first three, also appear in soils, clays and shales. But direct chemical analysis is of little value in describing the nature of such materials. Many chemical individuals may be present in variable amounts, and the extreme subdivision of any one of the individuals may contribute qualities that dominate the mixture.

FIRST indications that mineral industries expansion is beginning to show results are contained in the report by Defense Mobilizer Charles E. Wilson, The Battle for Production. The report, submitted to the President early this year, says that the United States has reached a $2 billion-per-month rate in military deliveries-three times that of 1950. Plant expansion in 1951 totalled $11.1 billion, the report states. Certificates of accelerated amortization have been approved to cover $11.4 billion in proposed plant construction. In reference to plant expansion significant to the mineral industry, the report states: •Steel industry goal is 120 million ingot tons by 1954, compared with present 108 -million ingot ton capacity. •Taconite beneficiation should result in 15 million tons by 1955. •An existing annual aluminum output rate of 860,000 tons. •An estimated 500,000 tons of sulphur by late 1953 •Manganese production up 50,000 tons as- the result of new projects in 1952. •Montana tungsten project coming into production in 1952. •Present zinc production expansion projects to add an estimated 150,000 tons to the 1951 production figure in 1953. Information gathered from official sources, other than Mr. Wilson's report, indicates an increase in the annual capacity of other segments of the industry by 1955, as shown in Table I. [ ]

LIEBERMANN.-As mentioned in my paper, a special investigation was made on the effect of dirt on the track, for the -express purpose of educating mine operators to the advantage of keeping their tracks clean. As to the benefit of clean tracks to the saving in battery consumption, that can be easily determined if the rate of discharge is known under existing conditions, that is, on dirty tracks. The tests have shown that tracks covered with coal dust cause an increase in draw-bar pull of about 30 per cent. The battery discharge table will show the capacity corresponding to the new rate of discharge and will thereby disclose the possible saving in battery consumption. The difference between dirty tracks and clean tracks will be found large enough to have an appreciable effect on the size of the storage-battery locomotive, and for a locomotive of any given size it may mean

The Anaconda Company, an organization of mining people, enters a new world of copper production as it brings on stream its recently constructed Twin Buttes operation some 25 miles south of Tucson, Ariz. Twin Buttes comprises the largest earth-moving task performed in the history of mining. Some people liken this job to moving enough earth and rock to complete the famed Aswan High Dam in Egypt. In all, some 236 million tons of overburden and rock were removed from over the ore deposit.

Magnesium derived foams were prepared by using the so-called baking of powder blended precursor material method. This method comprises mixing magnesium powder with a small fraction of blowing agent (ZrH2, Cs2CO3 and CaH2) and Ni like catalyst, compacting this mix and creating a foam by heat treatment above the magnesium melting temperature. The resulting samples were characterised by microscopy, gas adsorption (BET method) and by small angle neutron scattering. Several mathematical models were used in order to determine particle size distribution, fractal dimension and total pore volume fractions.

The paper deals with the taking of soundings in connection with coal mining operations under part of the Pacific Ocean adjoining John Darling Colliery.INTRODUCTIONIn the early days of mining in the Newcastle District there did not appear to be any definite law specifying the limits to which mine workings, other than certain borings, could extend under tidal waters.As time went on, a figure of 120 ft. was fixed as the minimum thickness of strata between the roof of the seam and the sea bottom; beyond this mining operations are disallowed. The laws relating to working coal under tidal waters are as follow:-The minimum width of pillars to be left shall be eight (8) yards and the maximum width of bords or other excavations shall be six (6) yards, but the lessee may at his discretion increase the minimum width of the pillars or decrease the maximum width of the bordsor other excavations so as to increase the general safety.The eight (8) yard pillars shall be left unwrought.In on-road of every pair of Winning-off or leading headings, a bore shall be kept going ten (10) feet in advance for the purpose of foretelling the presence of any fissure, wash-out, open joint, fault, dyke, or otherwise, and all winning-off headings shall be driven atleast one hundred (100) yards in advance of the working bords.The most accurate and trustworthy information shall be obtained by the lessee not only' of the depth and character of the ocean bed, river, lake, or estuary deposit, but also of the strata overlying the coal seam.When working under the ocean, strata shall be bored through and proved a minimum thickness of thirty (30) feet at the face of the leading headings or levels immediately such headings or levels are under the ocean, and...

"Previously, in 2013, a laboratory version of the computer code ARMPS-LAM, introduced at the 32""d International Conference of Ground Control in Mining, successfully integrated the laminated overburden model of LaModel into an ARMPS-style pillar stability analysis. The ARMPS-LAM analysis has now been fully integrated into the ARMPS program allowing users to more accurately classify the stability of a given mine design utilizing a laminated overburden model for the determination of pillar loading within theAMZ. ,This paper introduces the new Windows-based ARMPS-LAM program. The program's ease of use, output result generation, and limitations are highlighted through the parametric analysis of three hypothetical case studies where traditional ARMPS output is compared to output generated by LaModel. As mining operations continue to produce at greater depths and in more complex geometric and geological conditions, flexible and efficient analyses of mine stability for underground room and pillar mining has become more and more essential. The ARMPS-LAM program provides the mining industry with an empirically backed, numerical design tool for the evaluation of underground room and pillar mine plans.INTRODUCTIONIn the Southern Appalachian coal fields of the United States, retreat room-and-pillar methods have allowed mining operations to maintain high rates of production in the face of adverse geologic conditions and shrinking coal reserves. Over the years, research has been dedicated to understanding and mitigating mining-related dangers due to second mining practices, such as: pillar squeezes, floor heave, roof falls, pillar bumps, etc. However, as mining operations continue at deeper depths and with more complex geometric and geologic conditions, there is an inherent industry need for more accurate, flexible, and faster evaluations of stability for underground room-and-pillar mining."

The Sand Compaction Pile (SCP) method has been widely used as a typical countermeasure against liquefaction in Japan, and its effectiveness has been confirmed in many case histories of damages caused by the past large-scale earthquakes. A series of studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the compaction method and other factors, if any, in sustaining a seismic force that is greater than the assumed one and caused no damage. Based on the results of these studies, the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) has indicated in its “Recommendations for Design of Ground Improvement for Building Foundations” published in 2006 that the liquefaction resistance ratio (tl/sz) of the composite ground, which consists of sand piles and surrounding compacted ground, is higher than the RL calculated by using the SPT N-values of the ground in-between the sand piles. In this paper, statistical analysis of safety factor against liquefaction, FL, was performed by using the SPT N-values of ground in Port Island and Rokko Island which were both fully reclaimed islands in Kobe city during the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nambu Earthquake (classified as intense shaking) and, together with the consideration of relative settlement, resulted in tl/sz of the composite ground being 1.5~2.5 times of tl/sz of the soil in-between piles after improvement. Furthermore, the liquefaction resistance curve of SCP-improved sites obtained from the relationship between SPT N-values and cyclic shear stress ratio during the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake, which was regarded as long-duration earthquake, was plotted to the left side of the curve originally proposed by Japan Road Association. Thus, the liquefaction resistance of the improved ground was found to be higher than that of the natural ground, even for the same SPT N-values, verifying the validity of the AIJ recommendation.
