This study examines the impact of low-temperature heat-treatment cycles on microstructure and corrosion performance of Direct Metal Laser Sintered (DMLS) AlSi10Mg_200C alloy. It is known that the morphology and the size of eutectic silicon are the two most critical factors affecting mechanical properties of the AlSi10Mg alloy. Although high-temperature heat-treatment cycles are common practice for the strengthening of the cast Al-Si-Mg alloys, in the case of DMLS fabricated AlSi10Mg alloy, high-temperature solutionizing and low temperature annealing cycles result in mechanical properties degradation primarily due to a dramatic decrease in the solubility of Si in the super-saturated a-Al matrix of the as-printed alloy. In this study, low-temperature heat-treatment cycles that only promote precipitation of Mg2Si accompanied by the interruption of the silicon network were investigated. SEM and XRD analysis were utilized to observe the evolution of microstructure after different annealing heat-treatments at 200, 250, 300, and 350°C for 3 h. Increasing the heat-treatment temperature contributed to the Si networks interruption and an increased precipitation of Mg2Si phase. Low-temperature annealing from 200 to 350°C was found to promote the homogeneity of the microstructure characterized by a uniform distribution of eutectic Si in ??-Al matrix. Additionally, in order to investigate the impact of different heat-treatment cycles on corrosion resistivity of DMLS-AlSi10Mg_200C, the potentiodynamic polarization testing and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were performed in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The results revealed more uniformly distributed pitting attack on the corroded surface by further increase in the annealing temperature, which was attributed to the uniformity of Si dispersion. In comparison, low temperature annealing at 200°C led to a penetrating selective corrosion attack along the melt pool boundaries, resulting in a higher corrosion rate associated with the lower absolute value of impedance of the protective passive film on the surface.

"The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected milling conditions of calcium carbonate. A variety of grinding media material and bead sizes, along with 2 different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data was used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions.INTRODUCTIONAs a result of increasing energy costs and raw material prices it is important to look at the efficiency of the manufacturing process. Wet grinding and ultrafine wet grinding in stirred media mills are now a possible cost-effective production step for the processing of industrial minerals and precious metals. The generation of smaller particle sizes (down to micrometer scale) can be advantageous for further production steps – i.e. better liberation of precious metals or improved industrial mineral qualities.In the following, the wet grinding process is investigated under different milling conditions of calcium carbonate. Different grinding media materials varying in specific weight, bead size and stirrer tip speeds are used to determine optimal energy consumption for the milling process.DESCRIPTION OF TEST CONDITIONS AND PARAMETERSMill ParametersTests were performed in a Drais Laboratory Perl Mill PML H/V with an installed electrical motor power of 3 kW. The mill chamber is silicon carbide where as the stirrer and discs are made of yttria stabilised zirconia. The mill working volume is 0.9 l. A screen cartridge with a screen size of 0.2 mm is used to separate the beads and slurry at the outlet of the mill. All tests were performed with a grinding media filling grade of 80% (Mill working volume). The stirrer tip speed was set at 6 m/s and 10 m/s."

The development of a pilot gold geostatistical ore reserve system proved that geostatistical methods worked well for the routine production of annual ore reserves on gold mines of the Gold Fields of South Africa (GFSA) group, and that the techniques could also be practically implemented, understood and accepted by Survey Department personnel. Many side benefits of the pilot system became apparent, and a variety of useful management information was provided by manipulating the data values that were already captured. It was decided that it was a priority computing project to develop a standard production system (GORS) for routine use by all the GFSA gold mines. Experience with the pilot system enabled detailed functional specifications for GORS to be laid down. These, together with group computing policy determined the terms of reference and constraints for the GORS development. System design could not be finalized until new and appropriate mainframe database software and graphics workstation equipment and software had been found. With these in place the basic system was structured to take best ad- vantage of the interactive features of the workstation, the number-crunching power of the mainframe and the flexibility offered by a relational database and associated 4GL tools. Application sub-systems were developed for data capture, statistical applications, geostatistical calculations, contour plotting and graphical queries. GORS is being introduced to the mines in a phased manner with suitable documentation, training and support structures to enable it to be routinely and effectively used on a day-to-day basis by all group gold mines.

The effect of the anodic polarization on the composition and morphology of the surface layer formed on chalcopyrite during ammonia–ammonium chloride leaching was investigated. The anodic polarization on the chalcopyrite electrode was used for oxidation and dissolution of chalcopyrite, and the resulting oxidized layers were characterized by XPS, SEM and optical microscopy. The results show that oxide layers exist on the chalcopyrite surface with or without any anodic polarization in the leaching solution at ambient atmosphere. However, the composition and morphology of the layers are strongly depended on the extent of polarization. The distribution of FeOOH and Fe2O3 within the oxidized layer was inhomogeneous for the sample at the open circuit potential (OCP). The composition and morphology of the oxidized layers which were formed at anodic potentials lower than 0.3 V versus SCE were similar to those of the chalcopyrite at the OCP. At anodic potentials above 0.4 V, the oxidized layers contained many cracks, and they were fragile and exfoliated. Furthermore, the sulfide had been oxidized to sulfur species with higher oxidation states. The oxidation of the chalcopyrite seemed to undergo a cyclically oxidative process that suggested growth and spallation of oxidation layers on chalcopyrite in a layer-by-layer sequence.

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

CONSIDERABLE deep hole prospect drilling has been done in the last few years in the Globe-Miami mining district about 70 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, and in the San Manuel-Tiger area about 50 miles south of the Globe-Miami region. More than 205,000 ft of churn drilling have been completed by the San Manuel Copper Corp. at their property in the Old Hat Mining District in southern Pinal County. The deepest hole on this property is 2850 ft; there are 49 holes deeper than 2000 ft. At the adjoining Houghton property of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., where only one hole reached 2000-ft depth, there were 27,472 ft of churn drilling and 3436 ft of diamond drilling. Three churn drill holes were deepened by diamond drilling methods. Near Miami in the Globe-Miami district the Amico Mining Corp. drilled four holes by combined churn and rotary drilling methods, the total amounting to 13,879 ft, of which 2256 ft were drilled with a portable rotary rig. In the same district, besides doing a large amount of shallow prospect drilling, the Miami Copper Co. drilled two holes of 2560 and 3787 ft, respectively, which were completed by churn drilling methods. The rocks encountered in drilling at San Manuel and Tiger are described by Steele and Rubly in their paper on the San Manuel Prospect' and by Chapman in a report on the San Manuel Copper Deposit.' The rocks are well-consolidated Gila conglomerate, quartz monzonite, and monzonite porphyry. In some places these formations stand very well while being drilled, and three holes were drilled without casing, the deepest of which was 2200 ft. In other holes faulted and fractured ground made drilling difficult. In the Globe-Miami district the deep drilling was done in the down-faulted block of Gila conglomerate east of the Miami fault and in the underlying Pinal schist. The geology of this area is described by Ranaome. In the Amico holes the conglomerate varied from material consisting entirely of granite boulders and fragments to a rock made up of schist fragments in a sandy matrix; in the Miami Copper Co. holes there were more granite boulders and the material was poorly consolidated. Drilling was much more difficult and expensive in the Miami area than in the San Manuel district, mainly because of the depth of the holes and the formations drilled. All the deep hole prospecting described in this paper was done with portable rigs. The churn drill rigs were of several types, of which the Bucyrus-Erie were the most popular. Bucyrus-Erie 28L, 29W, and 36L rigs were used on some of the deeper holes on the San Manuel property. A few Fort Worth spudder types were tried, and the deepest hole at San Manuel was drilled with a Fort Worth Jumbo H. The spudder type is considerably larger than most other rigs used on this work and required a larger location site. The spudders were belt-driven machines with separate power units, and time required for setting up and moving was much longer than with the more portable drills. All the churn drilling was done by contractors or with machinery leased from them. A few of the contractors had complete equipment, including most of the necessary fishing tools. Unusual and special fishing tools were obtainable from the supply companies in the oil fields of New Mexico or in the Los Angeles area. Most of the contractors used equipment with standard API tool joints, so that much of it was interchangeable. Failure of tool joints is one of the principal causes of fishing jobs. It can be minimized if the joints are kept to the API specifications and the proper sized joints are used in the various holes. The minimum sizes that should be used with various bits are as follows: 12-in. and larger bits, 4x5-in. tool joints; 10-in. bits, 3Y4x41/4-in. tool joints; 8-in. bits, 23/4x 3 3/4-in. tool joints; 6-in. bits, 21/4x31/4-in. tool joints; 4-in. bits, 15/ix25/s-in. tool joints. Two rotary drill rigs were tried at San Manuel on the same hole, and a portable rotary drill rig was used on the Amico drilling for test coring the formation and for drilling in holes 3 and 4. Rotary drilling differs from churn drilling or cable tool drilling in that the bit is revolved by a string of drill pipe and the cuttings are removed from the hole by a thin solution of mud pumped through the drill pipe. The principal parts of a rotary rig are the power unit, a rotating table to revolve the drill pipe, hoists to raise and lower the pipe and to handle casing, and a pumping system to circulate the drilling liquid. The rig used on the Amico property at Miami was mounted on a truck. The larger rig used on the San Manuel property was hauled by several trucks and had separate turntable and pumping units. Diamond drill coring equipment was used successfully with the rotary rig in the holes on the Amico property. To allow for 2-in. drill pipe with tool joints, 31/2-in. core barrels and bits were used. With the standard 31h-in. core barrel there was considerable difficulty in maintaining circulation with mud, so a barrel was designed with a smaller inner tube and a broad-faced bit. This allowed coarser material to circulate between the barrels. Rock bits of 5 to 37/8 in. were used with the rotary rig for drilling between core runs. Diamond drill equipment is much lighter than churn drill tools, so that fishing tools can usually be obtained from supply houses by air express when needed. Three churn drill holes on the Houghton property at Tiger were deepened by diamond drilling with Longyear UG Straitline gasoline-driven machines. This work presents early results from the first study to optimize the hydrodynamics of a Plasma Lift Reactor (PLR). The PLR is designed to break down organic contaminants in aqueous solutions. New experimental results are presented for air/water tests and for plasma degradation of organic contaminants in Bayer liquor. In addition, a multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model has been developed which predicts the hydrodynamic behavior in the PLR. These results of this work suggest the PLR is effective at reducing contaminants in the Bayer liquor and that the CFD model adequately describes the hydrodynamic flow.

"Some fundamental studies were carried out in order to produce composite powders comprising of two or three metal oxides ~y using liquid-liquid extraction and to develop the control technology of the particle size. The combination of samarium and cobalt was selected as the two component composite powders. Both stripping and crystallization occurred at the same time by emulsifying the organic phase loading the two metals extracted with Versatic Acid 10 and the aqueous solution containing oxalic acid. The effect of aqueous pH, oxalic acid concentration and agitation speed was examined on some properties such as crystallization percent, particle size and shape of each metal oxide powders obtained in this process. The analysis by using EDX showed that the two metal oxides were distributed uniformly.IntroductionComposite metal and metal oxide powders with high purity are indispensable as industrial materials in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics and metallurgy. It is difficult to mix metal powders or metal oxide powders uniformly for the production of alloy powders. If insoluble metal salts are allowed to collect as crystallization products in the crystallization-stripping process, the conventional melting and crushing process can be avoided. After mixing of the organic phase containing metals in fixed composition, fine metal and metal oxide powders of alloy composition are produced by using a crystallization-stripping method. Versatic Acid 10 and D2EHPA, both acidic extractants, were chosen in this experiment, and the metal oxide powders were produced by using oxalic acid as a crystallization reagent. Mixed metal oxalates containing samarium and cobalt were precipitated from the mixed organic phase containing these metals. Furthermore, the physical properties of the powders, such as particle size, shape and thermal decomposition, were measured in order to evaluate them for industrial purposes."

The natural separation of one element or compound from others in the earth's crust is a rare geological phenomenon; accumulation of large quantities of a separated substance forms mineral deposits of value. Although igneous and metamorphic processes are effective at times, by far the most significant fractionation is sedimentary. High-silica sandstone, high-purity limestone and dolomite, salt, and anhydrite-gypsum occur in very large deposits and are termed first-order fractionates. The marine diatomite of California, the trona of Wyoming, and the kaolin of Georgia and South Carolina are in deposits of comparable purity but smaller size, and are designated second-order fractionates. The paper considers the various processes and environments in which such industrially valuable deposits were formed.

The training program developed at Sierrita over the last twelve months has led to several significant improvements in both safety performance and productivity. Our most easily quantified results have been in truck productivity, where we have also experienced a 6% decrease in truck cycle times. We feel this is due to increased skill levels and awareness on the part of our operators due to our new training effort. The cycle time improvement has resulted in an increase in Truck productivity of 6%. Costs associated with productivity training have been $160,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1,400,000 in savings directly attributable to the increased skill levels of our technicians due to our training effort. As such, this represents a solid, high return investment at Sierrita.

The general program of the Federal Bureau of Mines on the study of alloys made with electrolytic manganese has been extended to copper-manganese-aluminum alloys. The initial results of the work are presented in this report and concern a determination of the mutual solubilities of these three metals to form the alpha solid solution. The principal studies of this system, reported in the literature, have been focused on the Heusler alloys containing ro to 30 per cent Mn with 9 to 15 per cent Al. These investigations concern the ferromagnetic properties and the determination of the crystallization contours, with little emphasis on the phases present in the solid state outside of this area. Heuslerl recognized a breakdown of the beta solid solution of the magnetic alloy, which he says decomposes into the alpha, beta, and gamma phases of the copper-aluminum system, somewhat modified by the presence of manganese. Rosenhain and Lantsberry2 examined alloys ranging up to 10 per cent Mn and 10 per cent A1 but were unable to reach definite conclusions concerning the phase boundaries in that area. Krings and Ostmann3 made magnetic studies and examined the system by thermal analysis. They present contours of the liquidus surface but do not place any of the phase boundaries. Corson4 has drawn a hypothetical boundary for the alpha field with few, data to support such construction. The binary systems involved have rcceived considerable attention by numerous investigators, and their general features are well established. The copper-ahminum system (Fig. I) has been thoroughly examined by Stockdale,5 who places the limit of solubility of aluminum in copper at 7.4 per cent at the liquidus and 9.5 per cent at room temperature. Smith6 established the eutectoid temperature at 570°C. by a study of isothermal decomposition of the beta phase. Over the past two years research, development ad field tests have been conducted on a new product called the "Scott Cable Sling". This work resulted in the awarding of U.S. Patent No. 4265571 on May 5, 1981, to the inventor. Work on this' project was done by the staff of Scott Mine Technical Services, Inc., and is in keeping with its philosophy of advancing mine grad control technology. Recent acceptance by industry has resulted in volume purchases of the product and indications are that it will gain wide acceptance by the mining industry. The system features flexibility in its application and is useful in both roof and rib control. This paper describes the product, discusses its range of applications and cites specific field examples of its use.

Injecting pressurized water into a coalbed prior to mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Because of economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is now limited to the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes that are drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob-gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72 longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob-gas boreholes. Computer coalbed-reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water-infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed.

To help insure the continued viability of the minerals and materials sector of the U.S. economy, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research and disseminating technology that will result in more efficient minerals extraction. As part of this effort, a process is being investigated that involves an aqueous chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure to treat complex sulfide concentrates to produce ZnCl2. Subsequent fused-salt electrolysis of the ZnCI2 produces high-purity zinc metal. Previous reports described preliminary, small-scale research on the chlorine-oxygen leaching system and fused-salt electrolysis of ZnCl2. This report discusses the details of design, construction, and longterm, continuous operation of both monopolar and bipolar fused-salt cells. The effects of temperature, electrode gap, current density, electrolyte composition, and electrode configuration on current efficiency and energy consumption were determined for a ZnCl2-KC1-NaCl electrolyte system. Zinc metal was produced at the rate of about 50 lb/day in a monopolar cell which was operated continuously for 60 days with current efficiencies from 85.8 to 98.6 pct and an average power consumption of 2.1 kwhr/lb. Bipolar cells with several different electrode configurations were operated for 90 days. A current efficiency of about 70 pct and power consumption of about 1.7 kwhr/lb of zinc were achieved using a three-electrode-pair, bipolar assembly with a chlorine gas lift pump to circulate electrolyte.

One of the most important applications of material handling engineering technology occurs in iron ore pelletizing plants. Although the total installed value of material handling systems in such plants, as well as in many other modern process plants, is a relatively small percentage of the value of the plants (5 to 10% perhaps), their significance is considerable. Indeed this significance equals that of the more expensive process equipment in the plant, since the failure of any component of any system causes, shutdown of the entire plant. It is because of this increased consequence of failure that design criteria for process plants are more conservative than for conventional material handling applications. A second unique characteristic of material handling technology applied to process plants in general is the variety of materials being handled and the wide range of problems this variety presents. One extreme encountered is the stickiness of filter cake. Here the entire design effort is aimed at keeping the material flowing through transfer points and preventing it from building up on components. Another extreme is the conveying of fired pellets - hard spheres with a very flat angle of repose and abrasive characteristics severe enough to make conventional wear plate materials impractical.

The Weipa bauxite mining operation on the west coast of Cape York currently mines lb million tonnes of crude ore per year from the Andoom and Weipa mines. Andoom ore is trucked up to 4 km to a rail load station and hauled 20 km by train to the Beneficiation Plant. Weipa ore is trucked up to 7 km to the Beneficiation Plant. Increasing haul lengths and production requirements have led to a progression of larger two axle rear dump trucks and currently he intrcducticn of 145-tonne, three axle L t Dm dump trucks. bith the introduction of the Andoom a operation in 1972, the decision was made to use a railway system to haul crude ore from Andoom to Weipa. This system has proved to be successful from both an economical and operational view point. Due to the successful combination of a truck and rail haulage operation in Andoom, future :evelopment of orebodies requiring increased haul distances and increased production tonnages will probably result in extension r>f the railway system to compliment the trucking operation from the mine face.

The termination of the recent war marked a major changc in the oil-field operations at. Elk Hills. Production was greatly curtailed, various experimental production projects were started, and a long-range exploratory program was inaugurated. Production was reduced from the wartime peak of 65,000 bbl per day to the current rate of about 8ooo bbl per day in order to maintain an available source of crude that can be drawn upon during a national emergency. The existing production rate is deemed essential to carry on the experimental production projects. These projects are being conducted to determine the best methods and means of maintaining the Reserve, shut in, but in a state of readiness to produce the maximum quantity of oil in the most expeditious manner. Projects now being investigated include: (I) protection of surface equipmerit; (2) repair of wells that might damage the reservoir; (3) gas injection; (4) water eneroachment, (5) gravity drainage. An exploratory program is being carried on to determine the amount of recoverable oil in the unexplored portions of the Reserve. The Shallow-zone exploration is practically completed, but owing to the complexity of the Stevens structure and the magnitude of the oil discoveries in the Stevens, exploration will probably continue in that zone for another two years. Introduction Summary of Development History of Elk Hills Although a detailed history of Elk Hills oil field is presented in various publications,1,2 a summary of its unusual development and production history will be given in order that the present problems may be more readily understood. The first development that resulted in commercial production was in the central part of the Reserve. The first well, Hay No. I, in sec 36-R,* was completed in January I9I9, and was soon followed by 37 Others in the same general area. It is commonly referred to as the Hay-Carman area and was shut in in stages from 1925 to 1934 as a result of litigation regarding the title to the land. Not being highly producti,, only about 6½ million barrels of oil with a large volume of gas was produced from the area prior to the shutdown. Shortly after the start of the development of the Hay-Carman area, drilling was started 6 miles east in sec 36-S' Tupman NO. I came in for 5000 bbl per day early in I92o, It was followed by more than 200 others in the next few years, and the field became one of major importance. Produc-

The Bureau of Mines, S. Department of the Interior) at, its Morgantown., W. Va., station, operating under a cooperative agreement with West Virginia University, is conducting research and development work on the problem of producing synthesis gas from coal. An important part of this work is the study of the gas purification necessary to meet the rigorous standards required to render the gas suitable for use in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of liquid fuels. One of the most detrimental impurities is sulfur in all forms, the maximum amount that can be tolerated being one-tenth of a grain per hundred cubic feet. Concentrations as low as this require the use of precise analytical methods to evaluate the performance of processes used for removing sulfur. At the same time the analytical methods should be rapid in order to reveal the failure of purification before damage to the expensive synthesis catalyst results. Although sulfur in unpurified gas is generally present as hydrogen sulfide and as organic sulfur compounds, the latter may be converted to hydrogen sulfide for analytical purposes. Thus a suitable method for the determination of traces of hydrogen sulfide may also be used for the determination of organic sulfur.
