The use of a thickener, without filtration, to produce a non-settling paste (also called thickened tailings) with non-Newtonian rheology has been practiced in Australia for many years for the disposal of red mud. The application of paste thickening technology outside of alumina is relatively new. Interest and installations in paste thickening are rapidly growing. Water shortages and environmental pressures make consideration of thickening tailings to solids concentrations within the paste range necessary in most new tailings projects. The paste thickeners at the DeBeers CTP plant in Kimberley, South Africa are the latest example of paste tailings disposal on the surface, also called “stacking”. Houman (2003) The use of a paste thickener as an alternative to filtration for mine paste backfill is a more recently developed application. This paper describes the principles of design and general operating characteristics of a paste thickener compared to the conventional and high-rate thickener. The application and operating performance of paste thickeners in mine backfill is discussed as an example. An integrated approach to process design is described that matches the performance of the thickener, pumping system, and application on a common rheological basis to ensure that none of these steps prevents achieving process performance targets.

"Viceroy Resource Corporation of Vancouver, B.C., has recently developed and brought into production the Brewery Creek Mine, an open-pit heap leach gold mine, located 55km east of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 15.2 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 22 tonnes (707,315 oz) of gold. Ore processing employs the heap leach technology using run-of-mine ore. Highlights of 1996 activity included construction of a 158,000 m2 of leach pad, placing 1.9 million tonnes of ore at a grade of 1. 46 gpt to the leach pad, construction and successful commissioning of the ADR plant, and pouring of the first gold bar on November 15th.Permitting of this mine has drawn significant attention because of the innovated heap leach technology; although this technology has been proven in other jurisdictions, it has not been used at such extreme northern sites where winter temperatures routinely reach -45°C for extended periods.ABSTRACT ONLY"

The AusIMM is concerned about the longer tem sustainability of the minerals sector in Australasia. Our contention is that the sustainability of the sector is at risk if we do not:   ò encourage more exploration in Australasia by removing impediments and         increasing incentives; ò fund our university and research centres appropriately to increase both our   prospectivity, and our processing efficiencies; and ò manage our human resources better.   This paper will focus on how we can better manage our human resources to assist in ensuring sustainability of the sector in Australasia .   From a production point of view:   Economic output = f (Land, Labour, Capital, Environment) where Land refers to all of the natural resources used in production. As well as land itself it includes water, forest, fisheries, oil, gas and mineral deposits. Labour refers to the skills and capabilities used by humans in the production process. Capital describes all of the manufactured aids used in the process of production1. The challenge for management is to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of labour in the production process whilst maintaining sustainable development.   The 1992 Rio Summit defined sustainable development as maintaining and enhancing:   ò natural capital û defined as all natural resources, both environmental and   those of traditional economic value; ò manufactured capital û made by human kind, including produced goods,     infrastructure and built environment; ò human capital û defined as the health, well being, intellectual capabilities and   spiritual welfare of individuals; and ò social capital û defined as social relations and consultations within and   between societies, their norms and functionality2.   The minerals sector in Australasia has successfully focused on the technical aspects of each of these components of sustainable development with primary attention applied to natural capital and efficient utilisation of manufactured capital. The technical aspects of human capital and social have also been addressed through an emphasis on occupational health and safety and interaction with local communities however I suggest that, to date, insufficient emphasis has been placed on labour (human capital) to maximise economic output1.   It has become increasingly common practice to identify land as natural capital, labour as human capital and capital as physical capital. That is labour has been treated as a commodity rather than an opportunity to create a comparative advantage and this will be the greatest challenge for mine management to show leadership over the next decade of the 21st Century.   This paper will outline characteristics of the sector which are relevant to the management and utilisation of labour, outline the outcomes of recent AusIMM surveys, review the reasons for the current and future anticipated skills shortages, some innovative responses to the challenges and finally, suggestions on how mine management can show leadership.

Coal treatment by oil spraying receives special attention at the Georgetown plant for the dividends it pays in satisfying present customers and attracting new markets. Customer satisfaction requires care, quality control, and use of suitable oils. REPRESENTED here are the ideas and varied experiences of many people in the Hanna Coal CO. who have helped develop, over a number of years, an efficient and flexible method for spraying controlled amounts of oil on coal. Since the Georgetown preparation plant began operations early in 1951, oil treatment of coal has received special attention. It is believed that oil treating will satisfy present customers and also attract new markets. The first step in developing the new method of oil spraying was the construction of a dust cabinet for testing 50-lb samples of treated coal with the available oil sprays on the market. Tests results were tabulated for both indoor and outdoor storage. The graph, Fig. 1, shows results of the original tests made with a 700-sec residual blend and a 500-sec lubricating oil on Georgetown stoker coal of 1¼x3/8-in. size.* The advantages of better price, improperly blended can raise havoc. Some.,pale oils also, although odorless when delivered, give off a sweet sickening odor when atomized under pressure. It is recommended that all products be tested before they are used. There is a specific place for all spraying oils. For example, at a power plant a severe dust condition exists around the stockpile area and in parts of the plant. The cheapest spraying oil made, regardless of odor, will do an excellent job in this case and will save the company 3 to 5c per gal or more. Domestic trade, on the other hand, must be carefully handled to prevent complaints about odor, and the only way to do this is to stay with the proved products after the odor tests have been made. The preparation plant at Georgetown has facilities to handle either tank car or tank truck deliveries. Steam is available at the unloading point if the weather is severe, and there is an indicator at the unloading point to prevent overflowing the 20,000-gal underground storage tank. Systematic test samples are removed from each delivery and sent to the lubrication engineer to insure quality control. Fig. 3 illustrates the chutes in which smaller sizes of coal are treated. Fig. 4 shows the entire spraying system. Buried in the ground is a 20,000-gal tank with immersion heaters grouped around the feeder line to insure adequate gravity flow to the pump under all conditions of weather. Oil flows to a 500-gal preheating tank where the temperature is kept about 150°F by six 1½-kw immersion heaters thermostatically controlled. Hot oil is fed through a self-cleaning disc-type filter to the hydraulic pump. Valves and piping make it possible to transfer oil from one tank to another or to drain the lines for maintenance purposes. All this equipment is below ground level in a covered pump room,

Surface roughness and acuteness are known as the two of the main properties of the particle morphology affecting the behavior of the powders in the process. Since the techniques used for the morphological characterization of powders by 2-dimensional microscopic measurement from the polished sections that have some disadvantages, the 3-dimensional analysis has often relied on measurements of particle morphology. A review of literature data was presented for high-grade barite and pyrite particles ground by ball and autogenous mills to determine the morphological properties using a new 3-D approach based on BET nitrogen gas adsorption and Permaran methods. Micromeritics Flowsorb II 2300 instrument which employs BET nitrogen adsorption technique was used for the specific surface area measurements and the roughness of the particles. Permaran (manufactured by Outokumpu Oy) was used for the measurements of airflow resistance of powder samples for the acuteness. Spherical glass beads were used as reference sample for the acuteness measurements. The obtained parameters, which are surface roughness and acuteness, were corre-lated with the floatability performance of those mineral particles. The flotation performances of those particles ground in different mills (ball and autogenous) were also evaluated by a Hallimond tube. The results showed that lower roughness and acuteness values caused higher flotation recoveries for both barite and pyrite particles that were tested independently in different type of the mills. In other words; particles with smooth surfaces resulted in better floatability for barite and pyrite minerals studied.

TSG Consulting works with many of the major global mining companies using simulation modelling as an integral component in their development team's processes to determine which combination of infrastructure options, operating performance and operating rules best achieve project goals. All systems can be divided into a series of subprocesses. Conventional management and design practices focus on the optimisation of these system components. However, the interaction between subprocesses means that improvements made to the individual components do not necessarily translate into total system performance improvement. TSG Consulting advocates a `total integrated system approach' to understanding the behaviour and performance of complex interacting systems. In a constraint-based integrated set of processes, the instantaneous system capacity is limited by the subsystem component capacity that is the bottleneck at that point in time. Additionally, real world stochastic and dynamic influences tend to have knock-on effects across subsystem boundaries. This necessitates the requirement for simulation modelling to develop and validate solutions that are sufficiently robust to deliver sustainable outcomes. The key to maximising production is to understand the causes and effects the inherent variability has on component performance, subprocess performance and most importantly, the total integrated system performance. The correct use of simulation modelling techniques allows study teams to evaluate the relative merits of different capacity enhancement proposals. Put simply, when done well, simulation modelling provides a quantitative and rational process to enhance the knowledge and insight needed to make informed decisions.

THE data in this paper were collected to show both the volume and speed with which bituminous mines have indefinitely suspended operation while economic advantage in the industry has so gravely declined. The study was limited to the bituminous coal-mining states east of the Mississippi River, wherein conditions affecting production and demand are more common respectively to all of the mining districts included and represent about 95 per cent of the nation's coal mining. Data for the compilation of these statistics and for the construction of these graphs have been obtained in all cases from state mine depart-ment reports, except from those of Ohio and Virginia. In Virginia essential individual mine data were secured from an authentic source, but no individual Ohio mine information is obtainable, because all Ohio fact-gathering agencies are prohibited by law from revealing such data. In other states the facts were tabulated and later checked with the cooperation of Chief Mine Inspectors. In all, excluding Ohio, over 17,000 individual annual mine returns were examined. Special infor-mation was secured from each state mine department about suspensions in 1932. Accurate information was not available from all states about mine abandonment due to exhaustion of coal reserves, and while these were completed for several states, it has not been shown because it was not perfected for all states. However, the total observed sample was comprehensive enough to show that exhaustion accounts for a very limited part of the suspended production. Wherever mention is made of "suspended production" the largest annual output of the mine in the five years prior to suspension has been taken as the measure of its probable production had it continued to operate. A mine is not regarded in this category, as having suspended, when it merely ceases to produce. The word "suspension" is used only where there is a complete abandonment of activity for an indefinite period, as evidenced by the fact that both ventilation and pumping are discontinued.

Sizing devices used commercially are unfortunately not 100% efficient, the splits that can be obtained are usually inferior to the results obtained in the laboratory. Often the capital and operating costs of equipment capable of high sizing efficiency cannot be justified by the economics or requirements of the process. To reconcile the desired sizing efficiency needed to obtain optimum process requirements with the sizing efficiency of equipment economically practical, it is often necessary or desirable to predict the gradation and weight splits of the products obtained based on the expectant efficiency of the contemplated sizing device or method. The less efficient the sizing device one must employ, the more important it is to know the results that may be expected for the establishment of the optimum flow sheet and the more difficult it becomes to estimate the results accurately. Air classification equipment which sizes materials by opposing the drag force created by an air stream acting on a particle with a combination of gravitational, inertial or centrifugal forces are substantially less efficient than, for example, a laboratory sieve analysis. Air classifiers allow oversize material to contaminate the fine fraction and leave undersize material in the coarse fraction. The techniques employed to predict the gradation and weight splits obtained from air classification outlined below are adaptable to other sizing devices less than 100% efficient such as screens, sifters and wet classifiers.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations (New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division, 2015a). Installation of UP& Is monitoring system was planned to be completed in three stages: Environmental Monitoring, ConveyorBelt Interface, and Power Distribution Interface. With Phases 1 and 2 completed and Phase 3 initiated, massive amounts of valuable information have been obtained. From this information, many benefits where recognized and the decision was made to expand the system. This provided monitoring and control capabilities in a variety of new applications from ventilation fan and pump interface to innovative installations such as ground control monitoring. All current uses as well as future plans for expansion and data manipulation will be discussed.

"Carbides and nitrides of iron are being considered as magnetic materials for high-density recording due to their chemical stability and high-saturation magnetization values (> 100 emu/g). Iron carbides and iron nitrides with magnetic properties suitable for magnetic media were synthesized by employing a novel synthesis procedure based on fluidization of powders in reactive atmospheres. Fluidized-bed reactors of laboratory, bench, and pilot scale were employed for the synthesis of iron carbide, FeSC2, by reducing and carburizing U-Fe203 in the temperature range of 300 to 550 ºC. A temperature of 400· ºC and a reaction time of 2 to 3 h are found to be optimal for the synthesis of iron carbide. When the carburization was carried out in a reducing and carburizing atmosphere such as carbon monoxide, nucleation and growth of FeSC2 occurred directly from Fe304 with no intermediate phases such as FeO or Fe. Longer carburization times resulted in the deposition of carbon on the surfaces of FeSC2 particles due to Boudouard reaction, and higher temperatures favored the formation of a mixture of carbides such as FesC2 and Fe3C. Iron nitrides were synthesized by reducing u-Fe203 in the temperature range of 350 to 550 ºC, followed by nitriding in the temperature range of 350 to 550·ºC. The powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, and a vibrating sample magnetometer.IntroductionRecent demand for high-quality recording of optical, electrical, and audio signals generated interest in magnetic tapes with high-recording densities as compared to the conventional magnetic tapes based on U-Fe203. At present, commercially available magnetic tapes contain maghematite, U-Fe203, as a magnetic material with a saturation magnetization of90 emu/g and a coercive force of 400 Oe. Recording of signals at a higher density per unit volume of magnetic material demands magnetic materials with high-saturation magnetization and a reasonable coercive force. Although metallic iron particles possess a saturation magnetization of 130 to 150 emu/g and a high coercive force of 1000 Oe, the gradual oxidation of iron-to-iron oxides (of lower saturation magnetization) prevents the use of iron particles for high-density recording. In contrast, iron carbides such as FesC2, Fe7C3 and iron nitrides such as Fe4N and Fe3N possess excellent magnetic properties coupled with good electrical conductivities and high hardness. The carbides and nitrides of iron have generated significant interest as magnetic materials for the next generation of magnetic tapes due to their unique magnetic properties and relatively greater oxidation resistance as compared to metallic iron particles [1-4]."

En esta perspectiva se buscó liberar los sulfuros enchapados de las partículas de minerales y asi obtener una mejor recuperación. En Casapalca, el aumento de molienda y la instalación de un nuevo molino, permitió que se desarrolle dos nuevos proyectos: la molienda inicial de la carga alimentada y una remolienda de las partículas gruesas en el circuito de flotación de bulk con retorno del material remolido a la cabeza de bulk, concluyéndose que esta última remolienda, generaría un aumento en el consumo de reactivos, elevando el costo de tratamiento. Por tal motivo, se lo descartó y se utilizó la molienda inicial fina.

In my former paper (Bans., xii., 410) I quoted the ruling of Judge Hallett, of Colorado, in the "Iron-Smuggler" case, tried before him in June, 1882. Under his charge, the jury in that case found for the defendants, practically declaring that the deposit on the outcrop of which the Iron Silver Mining Company's claim was located was not a " lode," or else that the portion of it within that claim was not the apex. The case was appealed, and the decision of the Supreme Court, given in February, 1886, is reported in 116 U. S. Reports, p. 529. It simply declares that there is nothing in the charge of Judge Hallett to warrant the setting aside the verdict. The definition of a legal lode given in that case, and quoted in my paper at the page above-named, is perhaps the best of several which Judge Hallet has pronounced. That is to say, his earlier definition, that " a lode or vein is a body of mineral, or mineral-bearing rock, within defined boundaries in the general mass of the mountain," is here accompanied with further explanations, which relieve it from the requirement on one hand, that the body shall be continuously ore-bearing if it he only well-defined, and, on the other hand, that the boundaries shall be well-defined if the ore-bearing body be proved to exist. So far as this particular case is concerned, the approval of this ruling by the Supreme Court merely prevents any re-hearing as to the face. Detailed stratigraphic studies of the overburden at North Carolina Phosphate Corporation new South Creek Mine have delineated several aquifers and acquicludes within the 30-meter-thick overburden section of late Pleistocene sands and clayey sands. A major aquifer occurs in the 10-meter-thick sequence of shelly sands of the early Pleistocene Croatan Formation. The water-charged Croatan sands thicken into a paleodrainage surface on top of the Pliocene Yorktown Formation, a major aquiclude. A three-phase dewatering program is projected: 1) improve surface drainage around mine perimeter to reduce both flowage into the pit and rainfall recharge; 2) use a wellpoint system to dewater the upper 8 meters; and 3) use recharge wells along the axis of the paleo- drainage to dewater the overburden below 8 meters.

The high cost of gateroad repairs and maintenance in U.K. longwall coalmining is a clear indication of the failure of permanent support systems to fulfill their prime function, i.e. control of strata movement. The main component of gateroad support is the pack, the design and materials of which have experienced an important development process during the last 10-15 years. More recently, research investigators have attempted to give a design basis to pack quality and dimension, and reference is made to two theoretical approaches. In the course of a current research programme based upon in situ monitoring, interim design recommendations have been proposed as a means of effecting improvement in support efficiency. Identification of characteristic deformation behaviour forms the basis of the recommendations made and the subsequent improvement in gateroad performance reported.

As the grade of the gold (head grade) in the ore supplied to a reduction plants falls, the efficiency of recovery of the metal drops. This is not simply due to a fixed grade lost in the residue, since the residue grade is itself a function of the head grade. A multi-disciplinary approach was used in the construction of a model to represent the relationship between head grade and recovery efficiency. The model is a physicochemical one based on (i) the reaction characteristics of cyanidation, (ii) the milled-ore selection characteristics of gravity concentration, and (iii) the nearly log normal distribution of gold grades and particle sizes in ore reserves. The model was used to set sound target levels for recovery efficiency for a given head grade at a given plant, against which the performances of the plant equipment can be judged for control purposes.

The use of Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), a selective separations technology using specifically designed ligands, has been established as an effective process for removal of metal ions found in many hydrometallurgical, chemical, and wastewater streams. The MRT process has been proven to be highly efficient and effective for indium extraction and recovery from zinc acid leach, electrolyte, chemical process and waste streams. A high percentage of the indium is recovered in a solid product format. MRT has also proven effective for germanium extraction and recovery from similar feed streams. This paper provides the indium and germanium metal recovery flow sheets and analytical results of the metal load and recovery steps.
