The processes of magnetic separation and cyclone classification are common in the mineral processing industry, and frequently the two are found in consecutive stages in the beneficiation of a magnetic mineral ore. The application of a magnetic field across the cyclone, to combine the two stages in treating a magnetic mineral pulp, has been investigated with a view to possible practical applications in the mineral industry The results of this research reveal that magnetic particles can be manipulated within the cyclone body by the application of a magnetic field, and that magnetic grades may be significantly upgraded with recoveries in excess of 90%.

THIS paper is based upon 12 years' experience in the Southwest, including three years that were spent in constant traveling as examining engineer for the Phelps-Dodge Corporation. The material was gathered during rather extensive work in Bisbee, Clifton-Morenci, Globe, and Tombstone, and also on short and rapid trips into most of the mining camps and prospect fields of New Mexico, Arizona, the desert country of California, and as much of Sonora as was safe at the time. My methods of observation and my deductions are not put forward as new or scientific; they are simply rough field methods, based upon short notes, rough sketches, and largely upon memory, which I have found useful for coordinating geological data for the purpose of passing quick judgment on mining possibilities in certain districts exhibiting uniform characteristics. The opportunities for observation have been better these last few years than ever before, clue to the unprecedented activity in mining, which has caused the reopening of hundreds of old mines and the starting of even more numerous prospects all over the mining States. POSSIBLE SYSTEMS OF CLASSIFICATION By Geological Provinces There are a number of well defined geological provinces in the territory under discussion, and a study of their individual features is of interest. The following are a few of those that axe most striking in their uniformity. 1. The "Desert province," extending roughly from. Wickenburg, Ariz., to and beyond Barstow, Cal. In its north-south extent it reaches up to the Colorado River and clown into Sonora, but overlaps other provinces. It is characterized by a worn-down basement of schistose and granitic rocks, on which rest remnants of Paleozoic and pre-Paleozoic sediments, including very old limestones. The sediments are disrupted and contorted. Alteration in the mineralized areas is very prominent, especially in the schists and limestones. Cenozoic volcanic rocks, principally of semi-basic composition, have been intruded into this complex and sometimes cover it as lava flows.

IN diamond or churn drilling for the prospecting of ore bodies, two products can be used for quantitative analyses; i.e., the core and the cuttings, or sludge. Some operators prefer an assay of core; others insist that the sludge be sent for analysis. Both must recover the sludge for check samples or for assays if there is no core recovery for any particular section of the diamond-drill hole. The Freeport Sulphur Co. found that numerous cumbersome sludge boxes or barrels were inconvenient and delayed drilling. The sludge settled slowly in the ordinary shallow, rectangular diamond-drill boxes and its total removal from the container was difficult, time-consuming and unsatisfactory; and sampling of deposits of which the metal contents are easily concentrated, as in ores containing cinnabar, gold and silver, is subject to error if the boxes are not thoroughly cleaned. Mr. Charles Ballard, dredge superintendent at Freeport's operation at Grande Ecaille, Louisiana, developed a portable cone while he was in charge of prospecting a mercury property near Tonopah, Nevada, in 1040. Ballard later improved the design while the settler was being used at a manganese property in New Mexico. The operation is based on the "free settling" of comminuted particles in a quiescent liquid. The ordinary sludge box discharges over a lip 8 to 12 in. wide and consequently the water has sufficient velocity so that the discharge water is never clear. The cone settler used by Freeport Sulphur Co. discharges over the entire circumference, which gives a discharge lip of 9 ft. in the size of cone used at the cinnabar and manganese prospects. Consequently, the velocity of the discharge water is slow enough so that all fine material settles and the discharge water is clear. When the drilling of a sample interval is complete, the sludge can be drawn off by the time the driller is ready to cut another sample. Thus, only one cone is needed per drill. The cone has been used by Freeport successfully in churn-drilling a manganese deposit, in diamond-drilling a mercury deposit, and in diamond-drilling a deposit of ore containing tin, copper, gold and silver. The cone is greatly superior to the old methods of collecting sludge and is now used on all Freeport drilling campaigns in the western states, both for surface and underground drilling. Fig. I shows the important details of a cone designed for average operating conditions, 30 in. in diameter and 36 in. high. Abnormal conditions may require some revisions in design. Fig. 2 shows a working drawing. A hose or pipe larger than the one used to convey water from the pump to the swivel head of the string of rods is connected to the stuffing box at the collar of a diamond-drill hole. The usual T-connection is used. It is not necessary to use a stuffing box if the top of the cone can be placed lower than the collar of the hole. Then the return water and cuttings can be made to flow by gravity. This hose or pipe discharges the cuttings of the drill bit and the return

In order to fully understand why Amax Coal puts such extreme emphasis on the drilling and blasting programs at each of our mines, we must review the past. This paper will discuss the drilling and blasting techniques we used in the 1970s and their evolution to current practices. As time progressed, major changes influenced the surface mining of coal through new more restrictive governmental controls and local communities organising into groups with two goals in mind, one to shut down the mines and the second to try and get rich by making false and unjust damage suits against the mines. In virtually all of our midwest surface operations we have at one time or presently are facing litigation that has reached into the millions of dollars. Amax Coal has worked in co-operation with the United States Bureau of Mines in the areas of blast vibration, shot design, highwall safety, blast casting studies and many more. Today we are continuing to work with Dr David Siskind and his expert staff seeking answers to old and new problems addressing the blasting of overburden and parting seams.

3-D finite element modeling was performed to study the effect of bedding plane sliding and separation and tensioned bolt in layered root It was found that the major influence zones of a tensioned bolt are restricted to the neighborhood of the anchor points; that bedding plane sliding and separation releases the vertical stress in the roof above entry but greatly increases the horizontal stress within the first layer of the roof, and that there is a triangular zone between the two adjacent bolts at and near the roofline level that is beyond the influence zone of the bolts which is liable to fail if conditions exist. Based on the results, three possible modes of roof failure are proposed for the design of tensioned bolting.

The Quebec Cartier Mining Company produces iron concentrate for twelve months of the year from Port Cartier. This J>Ort is designed to handle ship varying in size from 3,000 to 100,000 d.w.t., requiring 50 feet of water at low tide. The harbour was built on shore for reasons of economy and layout, after considering many more conventional offshore designs. It provides for heavy oil bunkering, tanker off-loading, a heavy lift derrick and freight handling, besides ship loading and mooring. The weather for the previous fifty years was studied to enable wind and wave conditions to be accurately assessed for design purposes, and to determine probable lost time due to adverse weather conditions through-out the year. The first ship to be loaded was 60,000 d.w.t.; the second, 20,000 d.w.t. The latter entered the harbour after dark, under its own power, following a tug through the partly dredged narrow entrance. Large ships use tug assistance. Ships may leave the loading berth with the other berths occupied.

This Bureau of Mines report presents an iterative approximation method for microseismic source location that was developed to adapt microseismic techniques for rock structure analysis to investigations of surface problems, such as slope failure in an open pit mine. The source location method and two derivative location algorithms are described in detail, and the speed and accuracy of the two algorithms are compared.

The bainitic Fe-C-Si alloys with optimum content of retained austenite serve as ?containers? for storing of hydrogen. Both the vacancies of fcc lattice and the possibility of forming hydrides of silicon and other alloying elements will be used. The idea is based on our scientific hypothesis. There is the silicon threshold (Si=0,50%) in "Fe-Si" system and Fe-C bainitic alloys, above which it causes self-organized phenomena: sudden increase of hydrogen solubility and amount of retained austenite in the alloy after ??ß transformation, formation of two supersaturated solid solutions <a??r>, "rejuvenation? and its reverse process. Rapprochement of iron atoms when Si=0,50%, causes appearance of new covalent forces where uncompensated electrons of 3d-subshell are involved and it provokes synergetic phenomena. They ?free? silicon atoms from the previous bonds. After that silicon itself becomes a getter of hydrogen using vacancies (14) of 3P2(6)d0(10) subshell and it results in sudden increase of hydrogen solubility in metal. Simultaneously sudden decrease of iron activity takes place. That in its turn ?releases? the carbon. Thus, its redistribution, controlling the bainitic transformation, is hastened. It stipulates for creation of ?brittle bainite" B[a(C,H)+?r(C,H)] after ??ß transformation. While weathering of metal, "rejuvenating", hydrogen diffuses in ?islets? of retained austenite and ?relaxed bainite? (B[(C)+?r(C,H+H)]) is obtained. When heating austenite ?(C,H) is obtained, and after cooling ?brittle bainite? is obtained, etc. Presented scientific hypothesis explains the available experimental facts ("rejuvenation? and its reverse process, graphitization, weldability, forming of flakes, reaching high strength, etc.) in a new manner, as well as, gives real opportunity for creating of new trends in many fields, e.g. iron based HAA. Provisional data having been obtained are encouraging.

INTRODUCTION Located on the Colorado River on the Nevada-Arizona border about 56 km (35 miles) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, Hoover Dam is a gravity arch dam 221 m (726&apos;) high for electric power generation and water supply. The head waters of the dam form a large reservoir, Lake Mead. The dam is equipped with two emergency spillways, one in the Nevada abutment and one in the Arizona abutment. Both spillways which are concrete lined and 15.25 m (50&apos;) in diameter, were intended for use only if Lake Mead is full and incoming flow of the Colorado River exceeds the discharge capacity of the turbines and regular bypass conduits. In the spring of 1984, a combination of rain and unusually rapid snow melt required the opening of the spillways for only the second time in the 50 year history of the dam. As in the previous use in 1942, the massive discharge of water through the tunnels resulted in severe damage to the concrete Linings of both tunnels. This damage is the result of cavitation which occurs as the discharge water flows at very high velocities over minor irregularities in the concrete lining. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has long been aware of the cavitation effect which occurs during these high volume discharges and has been studying solutions. One solution to the problem is to induce air bubbles into the flowing water to eliminate the vacuum associated with cavitation. This solution had been implemented at Yellowtail, Flaming Gorge, Blue Mesa, and Glen Canyon dams by constructing an aeration slot in the inclined portion of their spillway tunnels. Since the spillways of Hoover Dam were already in need of repair, the BUREC decided to construct similar facilities in each of the two 15.25 m (50&apos;) diameter spillways coincidental with the other repairs required.

The optimisation and validation of shearer cutting methods is a time consuming engineering task. Many different parameters, of which not all can be controlled, can vary. The easiest solution, to increase the installed power and the longwall length, is not always the best. A different cutting method can increase the capacity without the need of new machines. The Department for Mining and Metallurgy Machinery at RWTH Aachen University therefore developed ProSL, the simulation tool for shearer and longwall operations. ProSL enables the engineer to create his own cutting methods and compare it with other methods. Machine-data can easily be varied to see the impact on the method. The research shows that sophisticated longwall methods increase the productivity of the system. The paper presents the results of the calculation with ProSL and shows how higher efficiency and lower costs can be achieved.

INTRODUCTION The Advisory Conference on Tunneling held in Washington, D.C. in 1970 under the auspices of the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forecast that $54 billion would be expended by member countries on underground construction in the 1970s. Construction activity since the Conference indicates the forecast may have been conservative. Statistics in the report indicated a vast increase in tunneling projects for mass transit, hydro-electric development, railroad tunnels, sewer and sewage retention reservoirs and water tunnels. Development of equipment is required to meet the demands for high speed excavation and provide tunnel driving systems with maximum efficiency and capability to sustain high speed advance rates. BORING MACHINE CAPABILITY During the last decade, use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has increased. Where ground conditions and limits of machine design criteria permit, circular tunnel sections are either the only section , or an alternate sections specified in the documents: a TBM is either required or is an acceptable alternate means of tunneling. The Bureau of Mines undertook a limited feasibility study to determine the practicality of removing copper from automobile scrap by thermal treatment. Test specimens, prepared by wrapping bare and insulated copper wire around small steel coupons, were heated at 600° to 1,150° C in various atmospheres for different lengths of time under both static and dynamic conditions. The tests indicated that adequate removal of copper cannot be effected by thermal treatment of scrap above the melting point of copper. Tests showed that copper present in scrap as insulated wire is embrittled by thermal treatment at 800° to 900° C if the insulation contains lead, and that the embrittled copper is almost completely removed by a mechanical action such as tumbling. Also chemical pretreatment of specimens to effect embrittlement of copper and the magnetic separation of oxide scale were studied. Tests showed that bare copper can be embrittled by depositing waterglass (Na, Si409) on copper prior to thermal treatment.

A study has been made of the transformation kintetics and morphology in gas-quenched Fe-5 pct Ni alloys. Massive ferrite or nlurtensite was found to form at temperatures in agreement with earlier results. Surface Preparation appeared to have the greatest effect in determining the type of transformation Product formed. Grain size change, subgrain morphology, and dislocation densities of massive ferrite were essen-tinlly invariant functions of cooling rate. The mar-tens~tic structures were typical of transformation in austenite grains of the order of the sample thickness. BY introducing the idea of a massive transformation in dilute iron-base alloys, Gilbert and Owen in 1962 served to stimulate a closer inspection of phase transformations in ferrous systems.&apos; A wealth of literature has followed concerned with the morphology,2-5 transformation mode,2&apos;3&apos;6-8 and thermodynamics of transformations.2,5,9 interesting controversies have resulted from the experimental observations; closer attention has been paid to the definition of massive transformations and still to be resolved is the Ms temperature of pure iron. The purpose of this note is to report some observations made in a detailed kinetic and metallographic examination of the transformations that occur in gas quenched Fe-5 pct Ni. The results are pertinent to the Ms extrapolations that have been made for pure iron and the observed substructure of massively transformed alloys. PROCEDURE The material used in this investigation was cast as a 5 lb vacuum induction melted, carbon deoxidized heat. The ingot was hot worked to a strip 0.10 in. thick, decarburized, and cold rolled to final thickness. Specimens were punched to sample shape and decarburized in wet hydrogen at 600°C. The chemistry of test specimens is indicated in Table I. Samples 1 by $ in., by thickness were resistance heated and rapidly cooled in an apparatus as illustrated in Fig. 1. Similar helium quenching apparatuses have been described previously;2,6&apos;10 the distinguishing feature of this apparatus is the nozzle geometry. Twin nozzles with three convergent-divergent, sonic ports were mounted perpendicular to the specimen for quenching purposes. The specimen temperature was monitored with an intrinsic 3 mil chromel-alumel thermocouple spot welded to the specimen and con- nected to an oscilloscope. A single switch stopped the current flow through the specimen, opened a gas flow solenoid valve, and initiated an oscilloscope sweep. Cooling rates were read directly from a photograph of the oscilloscope trace and the quenching rates quoted later were made at a point immediately prior to transformation on the trace. All quenching studies were conducted either under a vacuum of 10"-5 torr or a helium atmosphere. The sample geometry was chosen large enough to permit optical and electron microscopy to be performed on samples. The samples were electropolished for both types of examination in a perchloric-acetic solution. Electron microscopy was conducted on a HU 11A microscope operated at 100 kv. Dislocation densities were determined at the same general operating reflection (110) on foils thick enough to produce Kikuchi patterns. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Transformation Temperature Observations and OD-tical Microscopy. The quenching results of this study are illustrated in Fig. -2(a). Samples which were treated in the as-decarburized condition transformed in a manner similar to that reported previously—a decrease in transformation temperature occurred as the quenching rate increased until a plateau region was reached. Within the scatter of the results obtained here, there was no break in the transformation temperature-quenching rate plot. This suggests no change in transformation mode. Further metallographic examination confirmed this observation. A martensitic transformation was obtained for similarly treated samples except that the surface was first electropolished. The Ms temperature was approximately 85°C below the plateau determined for the unpolished samples and cooling rates as slow as 2000°C per sec were adequate for producing marten-site. Ball mill grinding circuit control has received increasing emphasis in the past few years due to such factors as declining ore grades, increasing production costs, and advances in analytical devices and minicomputer technology. Since ball mill circuits have been a traditional bottleneck in mineral processing plant throughput, control systems often improve through- put without requiring additional processing equipment. In addition, much of the variability of the grinding product size and consistency is often removed, allowing better process operation downstream. Among the problems which arise in designing and implementing a process control strategy for ball mill circuits are circuit constraints imposed by processing equipment and local management, proper instrument selection, installation and maintenance, and use of calculated or inferred variables for process measurements. This paper discusses these problems and attempts to identify valid approaches to their solution.

NIOSH has developed an automated PC-based seismic event (induced earthquake) monitoring system for use in mine ground control studies. The distribution and coordination of data acquisition and processing functions across a local area network is a central feature of the system. Mine-wide installations utilize multiple, autonomous seismic networks located both underground and on the surface. Seismic event locations, magnitude estimates, and other processed data are distributed for display and analysis on network nodes both underground and in the offices of mine engineers and managers. This paper describes the system’s design philosophy, hardware and software components, examples of installations, and a few observational results.

Stress-corrosion studies on materials used for surgical implants * by C. R. THOMAS and F. P. A. ROBINSON Samples of Vitallium (a cobalt-chromium alloy), 316L stainless steel, and titanium T318 were subjected to the boiling magnesium chloride test so thattheir susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking could be determined, and their behaviour under service conditions was then assessed. Stress-corrosion cracking was confined to the stainless-steel samples, while gross pitting was detected in the samples of forged Vitallium. It was concluded that the use of stainless steel should be avoided for long-term surgical implants. Surface imperfections on the stainless steel are generally the cause of pitting, from which stress-corrosion cracks are sometimes propagated.

In vertical airways, falling material - solids-or water - may cause undesirable disturbances in the ventilation in the airway itself and also in neig¬bouring airways unless precautions are taken to stabilize the air flow. Such cases can occur, for example, - in shaft sinking by drilling from a pilot hole, - during the filling up of shafts, and - during the introduction of water into shafts in the case of mine fires. In an airway with upward ventilation the falling material will reduce the air flow and may even re¬verse its direction. In an airway with downward ventilation the air flow can only increase, but a reversal of the direction of ventilation may result in a parallel airway. These disturbances in the normal ventilation are undesirable as it must be the aim to have ventilation that is stable in quantity and direction throughout a mine. In order to be able to prepare suitable stabilization measures one must know the pressure generated by the falling material; this pressure will henceforth be called "aeromotive" pressure. The main factors determining the influence of falling material on the ventilation are - the amount of falling material and its height of fall, - the cross sectional area of the airway, - the pressure. difference prevailing in it, - the-position of the. airway in the ventilation. network, - the air velocity, and - other parameters, e. g. the density and grain size of the falling material. To determine the aeromotive pressure-measurements have been made underground during the sinking and filling of shafts and systematic studies have been carried out during the supply of water into a staple shaft. The present paper deals first with some fundamental theoretical considerations and then describes the measuring arrangements and the results of the series of experiments that have been carried out.

The lack of fresh water sources, particularly in the Northern part of Chile, has driven the mine sites to search for new and sustainable paths to obtain water resources to run minerals processing operations. Among them, the use of seawater in concentrators appears as an interesting solution to this problem. However, the presence of seawater will have an impact onto the operation, not only because it will enhance corrosion reactions in the equipment installed in a plant, but also because it may affect how particles will effectively be processed across the numerous unit operations existing in the mine site. Among such unit operations, the grinding stage is a highly regarded as it defines the success of the separation of valuable minerals from gangue material in the froth flotation operation. Then, one important aspect to be addressed is to understand how the presence of seawater will affect the different mechanisms acting during the operation of a ball mill. The aim of this research work is to assess the effect of changing the aqueous matrix from process water to seawater in ball mills onto the mill performance. The methodology considered the use of Fluent® software and its capabilities to run numerical simulations with heterogeneous media. On one hand, from the data analysis, it is possible to infer that breakability mechanisms should not be significantly affected. On the other hand, the high ionic strength of the matrix should impact importantly particle transport mechanisms within the mill. Particularly, when transporting finer particles. Rheology results were in agreement with previous published research studies suggesting the suspensions to behave as Newtonian, Dilatant o Pseudo-plastic fluid depending on the amount of fine particles present in the grinding media. The latter will result in changes in the residence time of particles in the mill producing overgrinding or an excess in the circulating loads.

Within the last year, the Nation has been shocked by two major tunneling disasters. Almost exactly a year ago 17 men died in the San Fernando Tunnel in an explosion attributed to gas. A few months later another 21 men died in an explosion laid to the same cause at Port Huron, Michigan. The analysis of the causes of these accidents is still continuing. While it appears that they differ substantially from each other in their specifics, they share the common trait that, like most industrial accidents, they might well have been prevented. Gas explosions in tunneling are neither new nor particularly unusual. Forty years ago, Assistant Director Jarrett was hired as a safety engineer on the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct in California after an explosion that killed 12 men. Prior to 1946, in California alone, the Bureau of Mines had recorded 27 gas explosions incidental to hard rock mining and tunneling. The purpose of this paper is to review the status of the principal regulations affecting tunneling and to indicate some ways in which safer and more healthful conditions can be obtained. The Bureau of Mines was established by an Act of Congress of May 16, 1910. Since that time the Bureau has been making investigations and compiling and publishing health and safety data relating to mining and to tunneling. If any benefit is to come from an anaylsis of tunneling accidents, it must be the knowledge needed to prevent their repetition. The Bureau of Mines has also had informal discussions with the Department of Labor regarding the possibility of the Bureau&apos;s assuming that agency&apos;s responsibility for tunnel inspections.
