THE theory of hardening by interference with slip which has been so clearly developed by Jeffries and his co-workers requires that an alloy to be amenable to age or heat hardening should contain among its components some that will stay in solid solution at high temperatures and precipitate as a secondary phase on cooling. This secondary phase may be either a more or less pure individual element (chromium in the case of copper, anti-mony in the case of lead), or some intermetallic com-pound. Those cases of hardening which depend on the precipitation of a compound are not only the most frequent, but are also far superior in the efficiency of hardening obtained. However, the slip interference theory as stated in its most general form is not sufficient to foretell new cases of this type of hardening and also will not explain some phenomena of a more intricate nature. It is not sufficient that a secondary phase might be absorbed by the main one at high temperatures and precipitated at the lower ones. The kinetics of this precipitation and the accompanying. physical phenomena of dimensional changes play independent and highly important parts. These kinetics, while not yet sufficiently studied to he formulated in the shape of physicochemical equations, might find their expression-in a qualitative systema-tization of the phenomena of precipitation according to two different viewpoints. To begin with, we encounter the question as to the velocities of the precipitation and of the growth of the phase precipitated. To harden a metal in an efficient manner we must be able to control the precipitation on one hand and also to bring the total of the secondary phase to such a number and size of the particles pre-cipitated as, will produce a desirable hardening effect under commercially feasible conditions of. age or heat hardening. From this viewpoint six different cases may be dis-cerned.

"Geological investigation in the Appalachian region of Canada began more than 150 years ago. The distribution of rock formations, and their ages and regional structure are today reasonably well known in most parts of the region to 1-or 2-mile scale. Most Newfoundland geology is known only to 4-mile scale. About 200 earth scientists carry out research in the region, of whom about 25 per cent are government employees, 50 per cent university staff and graduate students, and 25 per cent industry employees.Increased activity is needed toward both regional analyses and problem studies through the efforts of multi-disciplinary teams. The ultimate objectives of earth science must be the discovery and development of mineral re•-sources and the use and conservation of natural material in the environment, all for the benefit of the local in-habitants. To accomplish this, the scientific community must carry out an array of research projects ranging from the technical products of geological, geophysical and geochemical surveys through to the research products de-signed to renew theories and hypotheses bearing on natural processes. Some scientific sub-objectives are listed.Recommended is the increase and broadening of communication among Appalachian scientists, specifically those resident in the Atlantic Provinces. It is proposed that an Appalachian Division of the Geological Association of Canada be formed to provide a forum for discussion of Appalachian topics. In addition, a committee or council of university, industry and government earth scientists should be formed to examine the state of the science in the region, to identify programs of investigation and individual projects of research, and to recommend methods of approach. If the committee succeeds and the scientific community acts upon the recommendations, the quantity, quality and pertinence of research will increase, and earth science will better serve Appalachian society."

A very limited development has been made of the coal-fields of this Territory. This is to be accounted for by the fact that a number of the coal-fields lack railroad transportation, by the distance of other fields from the consumers (due to restricted settlements), and finally by the poorer quality of a number of coals which have been mined as compared to others which can be economically imported into the Territory. The consumption of coal in Utah during 1886, outside of that used by the railway companies, was: Tons. In underground operations the evaluation of blasting fume dilution times and the application of recirculation techniques require accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosive used. This paper describes a methodology for obtaining concentrations of detonation products from commercial explosives tested under typical rock confinement and looks into the development of techniques for reducing toxic gases produced by explosives. This paper also analyses the application of techniques for the removal of toxic gas which would enable reduced re-entry times, a reduction in the quantity of fresh air and the use of air recirculation techniques, thereby providing substantial economic benefits to the industry. INTRODUCTION Toxic fumes from blasting operations are among the most common and serious hazards encountered underground. The implication of high concentrations of toxic gases emitted from blasting on the mine ventilation system are very significant and, in many cases, catastrophic results have occurred. Because blasting is a routine practice underground, the mining engineer is always confronted with the problem of controlling the fumes within acceptable levels. Typical control procedures employed underground include preventing or reducing the amount of fumes liberated from blasting through the proper selection of explosives and proper blasting techniques; removing the fumes through local exhaust systems or auxiliary ventilation (dilution ventilation); blasting off-shift, or at restricted times; localizing or isolating the effects of blasting where workings are isolated or sectionalized in the ventilation system; and absorbing some of the components of the fumes using air-water sprays. Dilution is one of the most effective control measures against blasting fumes and is universally applied. However, for precise determination of the dilution times for the fumes to reach safe concentrations, accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosives used is required. Research work has been carried out in determining the types and volumes of gases produced from blasting. In the case of ideal detonations, the nature and quantity of the fumes produced can be predicted by thermo-hydrodynamic calculations. However, commercial explosives exhibit non-ideal behaviour which is enhanced by the relatively small diameters of application in underground mines. The confinement offered by the surrounding rock further complicates the situation. It is well recognized that confinement affects performance and consequently fume generation. A detailed data base of fumes generated by commercial explosives at various conditions is introduced and the effect of blasting parameters such as, confinement, shock desensitization and incomplete detonations on toxic fume production is described for a variety of commercial explosives in use today. Thermodynamic predictions on fume production by the explosive compositions tested are also presented and compared with experimental results and their significance in assessing the quantity of fumes produced is discussed. A mathematical model capable of determining dilution ventilation requirements and dilution times to reduce the fume concentrations in the blasting zone to acceptable levels has been developed and it is being incorporated into a network system so that the effects of blasting can be simulated in typical mine ventilation systems. Solutions to the problem of controlling blast fumes within acceptable levels are described. These solutions include the use of control procedures which prevent and reduce the amount of fumes liberated from blasting. The use of low fume explosives, proper blasting techniques, dilution ventilation and filtration can be combined to effectively control fume production and save on costs. The application of these techniques to enable recirculation of underground air with reduced quantities of fresh air requirements is evaluated in a case study.

THE presence of an excessive amount of tough froth in the flotation of minerals, particularly coals, may create trouble in dewatering, filtering, and handling. Froth is also a nuisance in many chemical industries.1 This paper presents a study on the destruction of extremely tough froths with intense high-frequency sound. The data indicate that sound waves can be employed for continuous and instantaneous defrothing. A powerful high-frequency siren was used in obtaining the data. Also tested was an ultrasonorator of the crystal type with a frequency range of 400, 700, 1000, and 1500 kc per sec and a maximum power output from its amplifier of 198 w. The results, not presented, indicate that as now designed this machine is not suitable for defrothing. Although the sound generators of the magnetostriction type 2 3 and of the electromagnetic type 4 5 were not available, it is believed they are capable of producing the required sound intensity for defrothing. The use of ultrasonics for defrothing was suggested by Ross and McBain 1 in 1944. Ramsey 6 reported in 1948 that E. H. Rose mentioned a super-sonic device that broke down flotation froth but with low capacity. The writer has not been able to find any published literature containing practical experiments.

The Siana gold-silver deposit of Surigao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines is perhaps one of the most complex in the world, being related to an ancient suture zone known as the Philippine Fault. Early accounts described the deposit as epithermal, consisting of an upper limestone replacement orebody and a lower vein type deposit hosted in andesite. Recent field and laboratory studies, in correlation with the latest findings on the archipelago's tectonic evolution, however, led to the present interpretation of the Siana ore deposit's origin as involving both syngenetic and epigenetic processes, with limestone breccia, similar to the Cow Head Breccia of Newfoundland, as the principal host to mineralization.

This paper shows two applications of artificial intelligence models in process development. In the first application, a heuristic fuzzy correlation can predict flotation behavior in bench scale based on feed characteristics for a high variability copper ore, as well as to predict plant performance for a feasibility project evaluation, minimizing its risk. The second case study shows the use of neural networks to model the iron ore sintering, correlating ore characteristics and operational parameters with sinter properties. With this application, CVRD aims to establish a new step on iron ore product evaluation and customer support.

Three case studies were undertaken to investigate the role of land use potential evaluation in reclamation planning and to determine the impact of regional differences on final land use plans. The three surface mines studied were representative of operations in the Appalachian, Interior, and Northern Great Plains provinces. The scope of the investigations included a survey of regional characteristics, a detailed investigation of the mining operations and site conditions, and an assessment of local land use planning activities in the area of the mines. Special attention was given to key factors that presently determine the use of reclaimed land. Also, for each case study, the postmining land use potential was evaluated using site planning principles. Specifically, the environmental, economic, and social impacts of several potential postmining land use plans were considered.

Argentina's oil production continues in its upward trend. The year 1940 closed with an important increase over 1939; that is, 1,996,371 bbl., or 10.72 per cent. The Government oil fields (Y.P.F.) are responsible for these results, as their total output was 12,474,655 bbl., which compared with the 10,222, 533 bbl. produced in 1939 represent an increase of 2,252,122 bbl., or 22.03 per cent. Fields operated by private companies yielded 8,134,882 bbl., against 8,390,633 bbl. in 1939, a decrease of 255,751 bbl. (3.04 per cent). To the total of 20,609,538 bbl. produced in 1940 in Argentina, the Comodoro Rivadavia field contributed 14,976,222 bbl.; Plaza Huincul, 1,275,814 bbl.; the Province of Salta, 1,845,1977 bbl. and the Province of Mendoza, 2,51I,475 bbl. Table 3 compares the output of companies working in Comodoro Rivadavia. The total increase of 186,819 bbl. A programme of blast improvement was initiated at the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine by BHPIO management in early-1998. One component of that work was the need to improve wall control blasting practices to better achieve the designed pit slope elements. This paper describes the geological conditions in which pit walls are developed, the mine operating equipment, the blast design concepts applied to minimise blast damage, the techniques applied in an assessment of the blast performance and the operational procedures developed to ensure that the blast concepts are effectively implemented in the production environment. Substantial changes have been implemented in both technical and operational aspects of the mining operation in order to achieve the improvements in pit wall condition, in particular recognising the need for a more flexible approach to limits blasting in response to highly variable and complex geology. The benefits to the mine are not only an improved wall condition, but increased confidence on the part of mine management that mine plans may be implemented on design and on schedule.

The substructure formed by drawing at room temperature in aluminum (99.5 and 99.998 pct purity) and in recrystallized aluminum aluminum-oxide products containing from 0.2 to 4.7 wt pct of aluminum -oxide was examined by transmission electron microscopy, and the flow stress of the drawn materials was measured by tensile testing at room temperature. A sub-grain structure was present after a reduction in area by drawing of 10 to 20 pct, and the subgrain size was observed to decrease with increasing deformation. The tensile data show that the increase in flow stress (0.2 pct offset) by drawing from 10 to 95 pct depends on the reduction in area, not on the composition of the materials. Dispersion strengthening and subgrain bowzdary strengtlzening contribute to the flow stress, and these strengthening processes have been found to be linearly additive. The flow stress (0) can be related to the subgrain size &) by the Petclz relation = uo + k . t, where go is dependent on the composition of the products and k is approximately the same far all materials. THE microstructure of dispersion-strengthened aluminum aluminum-oxide products consists of small oxide plates distributed in an aluminum matrix. The matrix structure depends on the manufacturing history, and in hot-worked as well as cold-worked products the matrix is divided by subgrain (or dislocation) boundaries. For hot-extruded products it has been shown1 that dispersion strengthening and subgrain boundary strengthening are linearly additive, and the flow stress (0.2 pct offset.) at room temperature has been related to the subgrain size (ts) by a Petch equation,2,3 s = so + k . ts-1/2, where s0, increases with increasing oxide content. For cold-worked products containing subgrains no systematic work has been reported, and it was the aim of the present study to examine the microstructure and the relationship between the flow stress and the subgrain size for such products. The behavior of&apos; aluminum aluminum-oxide products depends on the purity of the aluminum matrix, and aluminum of the matrix purity (99.5 pct) was included in the investigation. The literature contains few data about the behavior of this impure aluminum, and aluminum of a higher purity (99.998 pct) was therefore also examined. As regards the relationship between the flow stress and the subgrain size in cold-worked dispersion-strengthened products, no systematic work has been reported. For aged cold-worked structures containing fine precipitates (Fe-Mo carbide) a Petch relation has been found,4 and it has been shown that the k value NlELS HANSEN is Head, Metallurgy Department, Danish Atomic Energy Commission, Research Establishment Riso, Denmark. Manuscriot submitted January 9, 1969. IMD is approximately the same as in iron, whereas the s0 value is higher owing to the presence of the precipi-tates. Investigations of metals such as tungsten,&apos; ferrous metals,4,6 and molybdenum7 cold drawn or swaged at room temperature have shown that the flow stress can be related to the subgrain size by a Petch relation when ts is taken as the subgrain size perpendicular to the direction of deformation. For aluminum no work has been reported on the relationship between the flow stress and the subgrain size after deformation at room temperature, whereas for aluminum tensile strained at different temperatures in the range -183" to 375°C a Petch relation has been found by taking ts equal to the subgrain size.&apos; In the present study two aluminum materials (99.998 and 99.5 pct) and three aluminum aluminum-oxide products (containing 0.2, 1.0, and 4.7 wt pct oxide) were drawn at room temperature to reductions in area from about 10 to about 95 pct. The structures were studied by transmission electron microscopy, and the flow stress (0.2 pct offset) was measured at room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Titanium has the potential to become the third wave of light metals used in high volume applications, following on from aluminium and magnesium. These light metals have functional attributes that can meet many of the goals needed for societyÆs transition to sustainable development. CSIRO has initiated a Light Metals Flagship to focus additional R&D efforts in support of the light metals industry. The vision of the Light Metal Flagship is for Australia to lead the Light Metals Age by reducing the costs and environmental impacts through innovative technologies for these metals. Life cycle principles will be used to identify novel technology pathways for metal production and product manufacture that are more energy efficient, less capital intensive and incorporating eco-efficient material flow chains.Under the auspices of the Light Metal Flagship, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of titanium metal production was carried out with mineral sands mining of ilmenite as the starting point. Upgrading of the ilmenite to synthetic rutile by the Becher process and titanium metal production by the conventional Kroll process were the processing routes considered. Two alternative processes for titanium metal production, the FFC Cambridge process involving direct electrochemical deoxygenation of titanium dioxide, and a plasma process for producing titanium powder from titanium tetrachloride were also examined using LCA methodology and compared to the Kroll process. The environmental impacts included in the LCA were greenhouse gas emissions (Global Warming Potential, GWP) and acid rain gas emissions (Acidification Potential, AP). The Gross Energy Requirement (GER) of each process was also determined.These results for titanium, along with those from previous LCA studies by CSIRO on aluminium, magnesium, steel and stainless steel production, were used to show that despite the relatively large amounts of primary energy required for the production of these light metals, their special properties (eg corrosion resistance, strength and light weight) mean that these metals offer potential GER and GWP reductions compared to other competing materials in a number of applications, when viewed on a life cycle basis. Two applications considered in the paper are the lightweighting of motor vehicles and chemical plant equipment manufacture.

Linear grade distribution measurements determined from polished sections of randomly oriented particles can be used to estimate the extent of liberation for multiphase particles of specified size. Two techniques, optical image analysis and microprobe analysis, have been used to establish linear grade distributions. Both techniques were evaluated and compared using variable grade samples of products from a copper porphyry flotation circuit. The statistical significance of the linear grade distribution data obtained by optical image analysis was assessed. The average chalcopyrite content of these samples, as determined by chemical assay was used to estimate the variance of the experimental procedure. For a given accuracy, the number of particles required to obtain an unbiased representation of the sample was determined.

Engineers interested in the manufactured-gas industry have witnessed p pronounced improvements in gas-generating equipment and marked changes in operating procedure during the past decade. In spite of these changes, however, the trend of development in the near future seems to be doubtful. Uncertainty exists mainly because no one can yet accurately calculate the number of years which will elapse before petroleum products become too expensive for, general use in making gas. Research in this field has been active, and the ultimate results are awaited with interest. Some engineers predict that in the future coking coal will be carbonized on such a large scale that coal gas will be used (straight or modified) for city distribution; others maintain that gas oil will be used in large quantities in the production of base gas; they believe that it will be economical to use oil even at appreciably higher prices. The question involves, among other; factors, consideration of initial and relative costs of equipment, flexibility of operation, salability of coke, cost of distributing different gases, and the relative value of by-products, It is common belief that for many years large quantities of oil will be used in gas-making, particularly in the generation of peak gas or that water gas will be used for the synthetic production of hydrocarbons to enrich additional water gas. In this paper interest centers in a discussion of the practicability of employing synthetic processes in view of reported investigations of the chemistry of the synthetic reactions. For many years it has been known that the chief components of water gas would react chemically under proper conditions to form methane. As long ago as 1903 a patent3 was issued in this country for a gas-making process which included the synthetic production of methane. More recently the studies of numerous investigators here and abroad have shown that besides methane it is possible to produce other paraffins, olefins, and additional, materials adaptable for enriching water gas or for other uses. The question arises: In what manner, if at all, can such processes be incorporated, as a part of the gas-making scheme in a city-gas plant?
