IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some millions of tons of rich copper-gold ore, averaging about 45%to 50%silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap limestone were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting Operations started with one furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore from the mine, containing very little silica. When the second furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from small deposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Kabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required-viz., 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. WHEN I first received the kind invitation extended to me by the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, I read over very carefully the suggested title-"The importance of long-distance planning and budgetting in modern methods of mining, and the advisability of working to some definite plan". I came to the conclusion that I might as well confess my inability to handle properly such a vast and intricate subject within the scope of any one paper. More properly, I think a round-table discussion should be indulged in-a sort' of symposium carried on in similar fashion to the World Power and Coal Conferences- you know, a committee for this, a committee for that, and, finally, a committee to see what the committees are doing. Weil, your Secretary's suggestion is just like that- much too comprehensive for any half-hour's presentation. As a paper, also, it either becomes too general and therefore uninteresting, or i.t descends into detail and describes means and methods to the end desired, which have little attraction because they were designed to meet quite different conditions than those my audience would mentally be considering. Of the two evils facing me, I have chosen the one that sticks to the generalities. Your Secretary's query almost automatically divides itself into two distinct phases: First, the importance, and second, the advisability, of planning. Let us dwell for the moment on the second, because, if we can prove advisability, that leads to desirability and, finally, to doing. Proving is the difficult part of the little problem. Here was something I, personally and as a mining engineer, had been battling for all my corporate life without being able to prove it to anybody. Then I saw the way out of that. I perceived I could put that little question of advisability on another basis altogether-:put it in the class of "coming- some day- soon" whether you or l or anybody else liked it or not; call it, if you please, mandatory, certain, necessary, enforceable planning. All of which means that the problem of advisability has rather suddenly become the very practical one of "how to do it". Why?

Among the numerous Low-grade manganese deposits in eastern Aroostook County, Maine, the Dudley deposit near Mapleton in the northern district is one of the few known to contain an appreciable tonnage averaging above 10 percent manganese. The ore body, consisting of stratified manganiferous hematitic shale, is over 5,000 feet long and ranges in width from 30 to 175 feet. The deposit was extensively explored during 1942-44 by the Manganese Ore Co., a subsidiary of M. A. Hanna Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Data obtained from this work were made available to the State and Federal Geological Surveys for estimating ore reserves. An estimate by the Maine Geological Survey, using a 10-percent manganese cutoff and to a depth of 200 feet, shows 609,000 long tons of manganese metal in material averaging 12.6 percent manganese. This fascinating paper deserves study by all who are interested in the economics of gold production. The argument in the paper that price is determined by the balance between supply and demand may be thought to be obvious. However, correlation analysis presumes causality, and there is some evidence in the paper to suggest that causality is absent in this market.

This session has been organized to suggest to you that the development of direct reduction is important to the iron ore mining and coal mining industries. The papers presented this morning will include a discussion of the costs of making direct reduced iron (DRI), the iron ore and coal supplies needed to produce DRI, the financing of direct reduction (DR) projects and, probably most important, the impact of the DR development on the iron ore and coal industries. For starters, this opening presentation offers a brief statement about DR practice and DRI, under the title that should surprise no one: "Direct Reduction: What Is It?" There is always the chance? that a brief statement may become long and complicated. But, by mixing some slides borrowed from Hal Lownie with a larger number of photographs accumulated from other sources, I hope to avoid such pitfalls.

Many organizations are realizing that continual improvement in health and safety relies on addressing the potential for various forms of human error. Of these, rule violations are often the most frequent form associated with accidents. These occur when an individual (or individuals) deliberately contravenes established and known safety rules. They have been associated with up to 90% of the accidents and other incidents in some industries, and yet they rarely receive the systematic attention they deserve in the promotion of safety. This paper presents underlying motives that cause violations. These can vary significantly from mine to mine and from job to job. Managers need some measure of the attitudes of the violators to determine the underlying motives behind the violations if they are to determine effective strategies for promoting safe behavior. Questionnaires form the starting point to address attitudes and the motives behind rule violations. The choice of the most suitable questionnaire, how- ever, will vary from organization to organization. Guidelines on the choice of questionnaire are offered.

Nautilus Minerals Inc the world?s leader in exploration and development of deep ocean mineral resources is today focused on the recovery of high grade copper-gold from in seafloor massive sulphide mineralization. These mineralized belts, analogous to land based volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS) deposits are located near tectonic plate boundaries of the Western Pacific and around the world. Nautilus; first development project is Solwara 1 located in benign waters in Papua New Guinea. Since 2006 the company has completed detailed environmental and geological studies at Solwara 1, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the first Environmental Permit for a deep ocean mineral project and the first NI 43-101 compliant seafloor massive sulphide resource statement. Nautilus has relied heavily on proven deepwater technologies from the oil and gas industry in the design of the first mineral extraction system. Pipeline trenching units, workclass ROVs, deepwater production risers and drill cutting removal systems will all be adapted at Solwara 1. Key contractors to the project have all been selected for their deepwater experience, creativity and determination to launch this new industry. Innovation is at the forefront of Nautilus? success to date. This paper gives an overview of the Solwara 1 development and describes the exploration and production technologies adapted for seafloor mineral extraction.

Reduce the airborne dust generated in a longwall coal face. Approach Reduce the rotational speed and increase the depth-of-cut of the longwall shearer. How It Works An Anderson-Mavor AM500 double-ended ranging drum shearer was fitted with drums specially designed to accept the large picks required for this testing program. Change gears In the shearer allowed rotational speeds of the drums to be set at 35, 45, 55, or 70 rpm. As deep cutting removes larger coal fragments, the specific energy requirements of the operation are reduced and less surface area results. Dust generation and shearer power consumption are also reduced. The lower rotational speed minimizes the fanning action of the cutterheads and thus reduces the amount of coal fines that become airborne.

"In this paper, an alternative beneficiation process was developed to recover nickel minerals from low-grade weathered ores. The studied sample, 0.3% Ni grade, is essentially composed of nickel sulfides (pyrrhotite and pentlandite); magnetite and silicates (mostly talc and amphibolites) are the primary gangue minerals. The particle size distribution was controlled using a grinding operation to avoid producing an excess of fine particles by overgrinding. The sample underwent a grinding step for the fine degree of liberation. The slimes (-20 ?m) were removed via two desliming stages in hydrocyclones (diameters of 1.5" and 2"); the ground material, which was classified in a range of (-150+20) ?m, was processed by column flotation in three different stages: rougher flotation for magnesium silicates, rougher flotation for sulfides, and cleaner flotation for sulfides, using pilot flotation columns (2" and 6" in diameter and 20 ft high). The goal of using the preliminary magnesium silicate flotation step was to remove hydrophobic minerals (mostly talc) that would float naturally with the sulfides, which would decrease the Ni grade in the concentrate, as well as to reduce the MgO content because this compound is considered harmful in metallurgical processes when a grade greater than 9% is used. The final concentrate obtained in the cleaner flotation step reached up to 2% Ni and 7.0% MgO. The global and flotation recoveries in the process were approximately 30% and 60%, respectively, due to the losses of Ni during the desliming process. Despite this low global recovery, the adopted beneficiation process can be considered an interesting alternative to produce nickel concentrate from tailings or waste materials."

Today, we employ 22,000 people across 19 countries and have 14 mines including open pits, shafts, beach-sands and seabed. 1.2. Last year our sales were US$5.7 billion and our total production amounted to 47 million carats which means a 40% global market share. For the Kyoto buffs in the audience, the company consumes 66 million cubic metres of water per annum, 210 million litres of hydrocarbon fuel and 1,600 GWh of electricity. Relations for the standard free energy of fortnation for the eight cornpounds were developed. ThE phase diagram for the Ca-Zn system as determined by Messing et a1.' is reproduced in Fig. 1. Earlier work on the phase diagram has been summarized by Hansen and Anderko2 and the very limited thermodynamic information for this system has been reviewed by Hultgren et a1.3 The heat of fusion for the compound CaZn2 has recently been determined to be 9260 cal per mole.4 Solubility data for calcium in zinc for the temperature range of 650" to 725°C were fitted by the relation and reported by Johnson and Dilloon5 In the present investigation zinc vapor pressure data were obtained by both the dewpoint and Knudsen methods in order to calculate the thermodynamic properties for liquid and solid alloys. The dewpoint method as employed in this work requires that only one of the components be significantly volatile, in this case zinc, and that the vapor pressure of pure zinc be known. For calculation purposes the vapor pressure data for pure zinc3 were fitted to the relations; for temperatures below 692.7K, the melting point of zinc. The corresponding free-energy relations for vaporization and sublimation of pure zinc are respectively. Some of the calculations also required knowledge of the free energy of fusion of zinc and calcium and the free energy for the 721°K allotropic transformation of calcium. The free energy of fusion of zinc was taken to be the difference between Eqs. [4] and [5], or The free energy of fusion and transition for calcium were based on the enthalpy values of 2040 and 222 cal per g-atom, respectively, as reported by Chiotti et al. 4 and the heat capacity data given by Hultgren et a1.3 and are represented by the relations, In the latter expression the difference in heat capacity between the a and 0 forms of calcium was neglected. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in preparing the alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure, and Ames Laboratory calcium. The average impurities in the calcium in parts per million by weight, ppm, were N-17, H—77, Ba—216, Mg-15, Si—7, C—157, and Fe—9. The zinc was cleaned in dilute nitric acid and the calcium was used as received. The calcium was stored and handled in an argon-filled glove box and when removed from the dry box it was kept in an argon-filled desiccator. Tantalum was found to be a suitable alloy container. A novel explosive formulation that substitutes the use of ammonium nitrate (AN) with hydrogen peroxide (HP) as the main oxidising agent has been developed and tested as part of an Australian Coal Industry Research Program (ACARP) project. The main objective was to provide a step-change solution that has the potential to completely eliminate NOx fumes in blasting. The development of this HP/fuel-based explosive started with a comprehensive detonation characterisation program, consisting of unconfined velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements of samples at different diameters, densities and void sensitisation techniques. VOD results showed that the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures behaved similarly to non-ideal commercial explosives; in that way mixtures could be tailored to achieve specific detonation performance targets. The next stage of testing in this development involved preliminary confined tests to evaluate the rock breakage potential of the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. Fully instrumented single-hole tests were conducted in a limestone quarry. Results from these preliminary trials confirmed the rock breakage performance of HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. The confined VOD measured in one of the tests was 5100 m/s in a 102 mm diameter blasthole at a density of 0.96 g/ml. The corresponding borehole pressure measurement of this HP charge was 2.61 GPa with a detonation temperature of 2921°C. Based on near-field accelerations, both HP and ANFO charges displayed similar attenuation characteristics in the test conditions. Post-blast observations indicated that the breakage performance of the HP mixtures clearly reflected the in-hole detonation performance measurements obtained, confirming the ability of these explosive mixtures to both fragment and effectively displace the rock mass under evaluation. Further research work continues with the future commissioning of a prototype mixing and delivery unit, the successful completion and analysis of data from multiple-hole trials, and further characterisation work associated with product stability, reliability and performance under different geotechnical conditions.CITATION:Onederra, I and Araos, M, 2015. "Finance Minister Donald Macdonald's budget of May 25, 1976 featured a restructuring of the anti-inflation profit controls and a grab bag of tax changes, some of direct interest to the mining industry. All Canadian taxpayers now will be permitted to write off immediately 100% of mineral and oil and gas exploration expenses included after• May 25, 1976 and before July 1 1979. The cost of acquitting Canadian resource property after May 6, 197.4 from a federal or provincial government will now clearly be included in Canadian development expense, and provincial drilling and exploration incentives received after May 25, 1976 will not reduce exploration and development expense for federal income tax purposes. Under tough new anti-inflation profit controls, all controlled businesses, except distributions, will essentially have one uniform set of rules for• determining allowable profit margins; this allowable margin will be determined by product line or by over-all net margin and will be 85% of the higher of the margin obtained in the five years preceding October• 13, 1975 or the one year preceding May 1, 1976. The basic capital cost allowance system is to continue, but many rates will be revised. The ability to offset losses created through claiming capital cost allowances on leased equipment, etc. against other income will be ended with respect to transactions entered into a/te1• budget night. Miscellaneous other tax changes will raise the low rate base for Canadian-controlled private corporations to $750,000 increase retitement plan contribution limits and reduce the rate of branch tax imposed on branches of corporations resident in a country with which Canada has a comprehensive tax treaty to equal the withholding tax rate on dividends under that treaty."

THERE is probably no phase of basic open-hearth steelmaking that is more of an art and less of a science than mold and pouring practice. It varies widely from plant to plant; consequently it is obviously impossible to set down in detail in this chapter the many ramifications of practice that are now used. The discussion that follows therefore attempts only to give an outline of the more common methods, with examples sufficient to indicate some of the variations in procedure, and to emphasize a few of the many underlying problems that face the open-hearth operator at the pouring platform. MOLD DESIGN Ingot molds are hollow castings of considerable wall thickness. Despite this, non-uniformity in wall thickness should be strictly avoided to prevent the setting up of unnecessary stresses. Molds are cast in various forms, sizes, and shapes depending on the type of steel, and on whether the ingot is to be withdrawn from the mold or the mold from the ingot. The selection of ingot-mold material, which is usually cupola or blast-furnace iron containing approximately 3.5 per cent carbon, 1 per cent silicon, 0.9 per cent manganese, 0.2 per cent phosphorus, and 0.07 per cent sulphur, is governed by numerous considerations that affect mold life. (1) Factors in addition to wall thickness that should be given primary consideration at the foundry are casting skin, shrinkage stresses, and casting temperature. Factors in Mold Design. In use, mold thickness is of greatest importance, for it must be heavy enough to freeze the molten metal rising in the mold and to reduce the temperature of the steel below that of the melting point of cast iron to prevent the inner surface of the mold from melting, which would result in the welding of the ingot to the mold. The skin of an ingot, which solidities immediately upon contact with the relatively cold walls of the mold, must soon become thick enough to contract on the fluid mass and pull away slightly from the sides of the mold. The separation of the ingot from the mold depends entirely on the heat taken up by the mold from the steel.

"Hematite concentrates are characterized by bad high-temperature reactivity and poor balling index, which restrict their large-scale application in the production of oxidized pellets. An organic additive, namely MHA, was authorized and used as binder recently in China. Compared with bentonite, the effects of MHA on compressive strength of hematite pellets at various firing conditions were investigated in this study. Experimental results showed the compressive strengths of preheated pellets with different binders were increased with increasing the preheating temperature and time. The compressive strength of preheated pellets with MHA binder was lower than that of pellets with bentonite, which can be ascribed to the high porosity of pellets with MHA binder. However, the compressive strength of roasted pellets with MHA binder was higher than that of pellets with bentonite. The compressive strength of finished pellets balled with MHA binder 1.0 wt% could meet the operation requirements of grate-kiln process.IntroductionHematite concentrates are characterized by bad high-temperature reactivity and poor balling index, which can lead to the appearance of those problems with increasing the energy consumption, shortening the useful life of equipment, and finally increasing the operation cost of oxidized pellets plants [1-2]. Some investigations have been conducted based on improving the pelletizing technique of hematite concentrates, such as pretreatment of raw materials [3-7], optimization of ore proportioning [8], addition of solid fuels [9-16], and so on. Employing high pressure grinding roller for the treatment of hematite concentrates revealed that the mechanical strength of wet green pellets could be improved. However, the mechanical strength of fired pellets was not improved obviously [7]. Huang, et al., pointed out that the preheating and roasting temperature may be decreased and the compressive strength of fired pellets could be increased by blending a certain proportion of magnetite concentrates with hematite [8]. Nevertheless, there are a variety of magnetite ores different in physical and chemical properties in China, resulting in the instability operation [17]."

"Based on theoretical and experimental studies into the specific features of the mechanism, kinetics, aerodynamics and heat transfer parameters of the flame-type oxidation of metal sulfides in a stream of technical-grade oxygen, a three-dimensional deterministic mathematical model of an oxygen-flame smelting furnace has been developed on the basis of the zonal method for computation of heat exchange. The model is presented in the form of equations taking into consideration the radiation component of the selective radiation, the convection component of mass transfer between the space and surface zones, heating of charge particles due to heat conductivity, accretions formation on a multi-layer refractory lining with inserted cooling elements. The adaptation of the model for a full-scale furnace has demonstrated the possibility for its use for computation of main smelting process parameters. Multifactor model investigations were conducted and the results obtained were applied using statistical methods for development of a simplified computational regression model describing the interrelation of the main output parameters: temperatures of flame, lining, slag and off-gas; heat fluxes to the lining; thickness of accretions; heat removed by cooling elements; copper content of matte. The primary goal of a maintenance information system should be to aid the maintenance department in providing the required equipment or plant availability at the lowest possible cost. To achieve this goal, the system must provide information in support of the following objectives: (1) establishing the best fleet, equipment, and component configuration; (2) establishing the best maintenance program; (3) executing the defined maintenance program efficiently; and (4) monitoring equipment availability. These objectives can be satisfied with five groups of reports. Each of these groups should provide regular, periodic reports to aid in planning and monitoring trends, exception reports to identify problems, and on-request reports to provide analytical capabilities.

The susceptibility of experimental low-nickel Cr-Mn-N stainless steels to hot cracking, sensitization, and pitting corrosion in the as-welded condition was investigated. These steels were developed for deep-drawing applications and are similar in composition to type 201 stainless steel. In order to obtain good formability, the rapid rate of work-hardening (characteristic of the 200-series steels) was decreased by the addition of copper. The behaviour of two sets of alloys during fusion welding was investigated: 17Cr-7Mn-4Ni-o.5Cu steels containing 0.001 to 0.27 per cent nitrogen, and 17Cr-7Mn-2Ni-o.1N steels with copper contents varying between 0.01 and 3.11 per cent. Al the steels in these two sets initially solidify as d-ferrite, which transforms partially to austenite during cooling. As the nitrogen level increases, the microstructure of an autogenous-weld metal ranges from large amounts of d -ferrite, martensite, and Widmanstätten austenite, to austenitic structures with small amounts of vermicular d -ferrite. The formation of d -ferrite during solidification and the presence of ferrite retained in the weld metal indicate that the experimental alloys will not be susceptible to hot cracking during welding. Except for the alloy with 0.27 per cent nitrogen, the resistance to pitting corrosion of the experimental steels in the as-welded condition is inferior to that of type 304 stainless steel. None of the experimental steels is susceptible to intergranular attack in the as welded condition. The alloys with 0.19 and 0.27 per cent nitrogen have properties (corrosion and microstructure) similar to those of type 304 stainless steel in the as-welded condition.
