During design of a 550-foot rectangular shaft in alluvium, lateral support within the excavation was an anticipated construction problem. Actual experience showed that the nearly 9 x 14 foot excavation required no lateral support. A strain measurement program con- current with construction and for a 9-month period following completion of the shaft detected only minor strains. Shaft design included consideration of available geological information. Site exploration included a 754-foot drill hole, cored at selected intervals, and a suite of geophysical well logs. Generalized physical properties of the alluvium were developed from laboratory core testing. An elasto-plastic, finite element computer program (DAHLKE) developed by the Spokane Mining Research Center U.S. Bureau of Mines, has been recently used to analyze the behavior of the alluvium around the shaft. Analysis showed that yielding first develops in the shaft corners and progressively expands into the wall zones around the shaft as loading increases. Gradual growth of a plastic zone progressed outward from the excavation boundary at increasing loads but had limited extent and was surrounded at all stress levels by an infinite elastic zone. This design review, aided by computer analysis, confirmed that the shaft would have been considered theoretically stable as designed.

This paper is written primarily from the standpoint of the miner and consumer of Missouri fireclays in refractory products, principally firebrick used in the linings of blast furnaces, hot metal transfer cars, the recuperators of glass melting tanks, and other allied uses involving contact with liquid metals and reactive slags. For these uses the manufacturing plant requires forecast of certain physical characteristics, as well as chemical characteristics, of the raw clays as a determination of practicability of mining, treatment such as pre -firing or calcining, and final usage area. These methods and results may leave something to be desired from an academic view, but are used my operation as an on-running guide to seeking and mining raw material. The high quality fireclays of Missouri are generally differentiated by the user as the softer, somewhat plastic, "bond" clays and the so-called flint clays suitable for a fired or unfired aggregate portion of a brick composition. The semi-plastic "bond" clays are mined in a producing area of northeast Missouri including Montgomery, Audrain, Callaway, Monroe, and Lincoln counties. In this geographic area the clays are the members of the cheltenham formation and occur in rather large lenses in which the usable members may approach 15 meters in thickness and an area of 6o to 8o acres. Overburden is dependent on the surface topography and, in our operations, varies from 8 meters to 25 meters. It can be up to 36 meters in the prairie uplands, but this is rarely strip mined. There was former mining by shaft and drift methods in which the overlying coal was also worked. These clays are primarily used as a binding material for other clay aggregates and is characterized by its lower refractoriness-cone 3o (165o c) to cone 321/2 (172o c), in terms of pyrometric cone equivalent, and an alumina - Al2o3 - content of plus or minus 31%. Large scale surface mining has a major impact on land use. Without reclamation, abandoned mining sites are usually less productive than before mining. With increasing and completetive land use demands in the United States, it becomes increasingly evident that multiple land use should be considered for all areas that will be mined, with special emphasis on coal, sand, gravel, and stone. The mining of these commodities affects the largest land areas and the latter two are commonly mined near population centers where high land-use pressures justify serious consideration of multiple use. Typically, sequential use will mean restoration of the mined land or at least transformation of the land into a useable state. Determination of land reclamation capability is a viable approach to planning reclamation of surface mined land. The natural resource base--geology, soil, and water--controls the type and intensity of land-use practices which can be sustained following mining. Evaluating physical limitations can eliminate consideration of uses which would severely impair the environment or which are impractical. This approach provides for an environmentally and economically sound land use at very little cost. In addition, it can save or make money for the mining company and landowner. Sand and gravel is an especially significant resource because it is mined throughout the entire country and commonly extracted near cities. Increasing urban growth and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This translates into expanded surface mining and an increase of disrupted land. Oftentimes this land is within an urban area and has potential for real estate or water-based activities. Bayer-process alumina hydrate becomes in turn the source of a host of special products in addition to the calcines that feed aluminum reduction cells. Though relatively smaller in tonnage, specialty aluminas serve important industrial markets in an exciting and growing variety. Production methods and applications are discussed for: (1) trihydrate as flame retardant in organic materials; (2) high-surface-area transition aluminas as desiccants and scavengers, catalysts and substrates; (3) calcines for industrial ceramics, refractories, and abrasives; and (4) tabular alumina for refractories, bed supports and other uses.

INTRODUCTION Conventional roof support methods such as mechanical and resin bolting provide adequate support for a wide variety of coal mine roof conditions. However, roof falls remain the single largest cause of death and injury in underground mines and seriously hamper production in many operations, demonstrating that these methods of roof support are not universally effective. One of the most recent and successful advances in coal mine roof control has been the introduction of the roof truss. Although past work on roof trusses (Gambrel1 and Haynes, 1970; Sheory, et al, 1973) shows little quantification of this support technique, numerous field examples have been cited where the truss effectively supported roof which could not be controlled by either mechanical or resin bolts (Kegel, 1969). The truss combines the advantages of both inclined roof bolts and post-stressing the roof. However, the full benefits of roof trusses will only be realized when design criteria to optimize support capacity are determined. The number of trusses required for a given roof condition can then be minimized, reducing installation time and making them economically more feasible. The purpose of this research is to develop roof truss design criteria based initially on laboratory studies of gravity-loaded multi-layered photoelastic mine models. Laboratory test results will then be modified where necessary following future field testing. The ensuing relationships should provide the field engineer with a reliable means of calculating optimum truss configuration, capacity, and spacing for a set of known roof conditions.

In the exploitation of porphyry-type deposits, the quality of the ore is mostly defined according to its grade. Besides the simplest distinction, ore-waste, several grade categories may exist and they correspond to the different ways in which the ore is further processed. At the time of mining the selection of the different categories is done from extensive information available from blast holes. But planning has to be done before this information is available and it is necessary for the geologist to forecast, from exploration and development data alone, the possible outcome of the selection done later on a block, a level, or the whole deposit and ultimately predict the ore reserves and value of the deposit. A good statement of this problem has been presented at the 1976 AIME annual meeting by Williamson and Hueller (1976). They have shown that, if the cut-off values are directly applied to the estimated grade of blocks, a gross overestimation of the recovered tonnage of ore (14%) will occur. This problem, now termed "the vanishing tons problem" (DaVid, 1977) seems to be common in many open-pit operations and it has been explained several times (DaVid, 1972; Huijbregts, 1975). In order to solve it l.Jilliamson and Mueller proposed a solution based on compiling masses and masses of blast hole data available from mined-out portions of the deposit. They derived empirical correction factors which provide for every block, given its estimated grade, the expected tonnage and average -grade of each category of material within that block. The purpose of our work is to repeat the same exercise but ignoring the blast holes data i.e. we want to derive the correction factors from the only DOH data. Doing this, we are more in the real conditions where the valuation of the mine and are reserve analysis has to be made before production actually starts. Lightweight concretes date back to before the Roman Empire. The earlier concretes were made by combining a burnt lime for cementious material with pumice or volcanic rock for aggregate. Although structural value was limited due to its primitive nature, many structures were able to withstand the test of time. The rotary kiln expanded shale industry had a slow start that began around 1908. The industry was founded by Stephen J. Hayde of Kansas city, Missouri. Mr. Hayde noticed that the bloating effects of some aggregates were undesirable by the brick industry. Material of this type was considered waste and avoided in brick production, but he realized it had all the qualities and basic requirements for a concrete aggregate that would reduce weight and still retain structural value. It came into national attention by use in ocean-going vessels through a shipbuilding program undertaken by the united states Fleet Corporation. This research was brought about by the need to find a suitable material to replace high-grade plate steel due to a shortage created by World War I. The need prompted the government to supply the reserves that Stephen Hayde desired to continue and complete research into producing a uniform lightweight aggregate. His results pointed to the rotary kiln method for which he was granted a patent in 1918. One of the most famous and largest concrete ships built through this program was the U.S.S. Selma. World demand for phosphate rock has increased significantly in the past fifteen years. Prior to the early 1960's, most of the world production was obtained from Florida, North Africa, and Kola. As the 1960's arrived, new mines in North Florida and Eastern North Carolina, as well as expanded production in the Western United States, .increased domestic production. Many new mines overseas have also become significant. This includes countries such as Senegal, Togo, Israel, Spanish Sahara, and Jordan. Limited production, often as by-products, has been noted in South Africa, Brazil, and other countries. In recent years, and even recent months, we have learned of many new areas being considered as potential sources of phosphate rock. This includes Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Many other developing countries have discoveries and are considering their new deposits, often with difficult beneficiation problems, as potential sources of phosphate. These factors all relate to expanded world, population and the demand for more fertilizer products to produce food. In this paper, four areas of the world with different types of phosphate deposits are briefly reviewed to contrast the ore beneficiation problems to Florida procedures--long considered the "standard" of the industry, at least for most of the United States' domestic production. Agrico has three large operating mines in Florida with total production capacity exceeding seven million tons per year. Here, pebble phosphate (+14 mesh material) is produced without the use of flotation, whereas all of the material finer than 14 mesh is subjected to flotation beneficiation to upgrade into high grade concentrates.

Laboratory data and field tests indicate that substantial losses of valuable coal can be caused by wind erosion. Wind tunnel tests show the effects of wind velocity and particle sizing on the amount of coal lost while in transit. Different coals were evaluated to determine the variables associated with wind erosion. The erosion losses can be substantially reduced by using a binder, or crusting agent, to consolidate the surfaces of the coal into a solid mass which resists erosion. This not only reduces economic loss but minimizes pollution.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral. It has unique properties, which combined with its low cost, make it suitable for use in a wide variety of products. Kaolin is defined as "any of a group of clay minerals, including kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and anauxite, with a two-layer crystal in which silicon-oxygen and aluminum-hydroxyl sheets alternate; approximate composition is AlZ03-ZSiOZ-1/ ZHZO".-The kaolin discussed here is composed chiefly of the mineral kaolinite. Kaolin is also commonly referred to as "china clay". Approximately 4.9 kkg (5.4 million short tons) of kaolin was sold or used in the United States, and .8 million kkg (.9 million short tons) was -exported in 1974. In domestic usage, paper coating and filling accounted for 43% of the total, fol-2/ lowed by refractories, rubber, and ceramics.-Figure 1 shows the amount of kaolin sold or used by domestic producers for specified uses for the years 1963-3/ 1973.- Kaolin was produced at mines in 14 states, but Georgia accounted for 75% of the 1974 domestic production. The average value for all grades was $36.00/kkg 4/ ($32. 67/ton) .-

INTRODUCTION The rock mechanics study of the shortwall mining system at Beth-Elkhorn corporation's Hendrix No. 22 Mine is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objective of the study is to obtain data on surface subsidence over a portion of the mined area, strata subsidence in the mined area, and underground stress changes and displacements in and near natural support elements of the mining system. This study is currently in progress, and only a portion of the results are being presented at this time. The Hendrix No. 22 Mine is located in the moderately rough mountainous terrain of Letcher County in eastern Kentucky. The nearest mine workings to the shortwall area are approximately 1,900 feet distant. The depth of cover over the mined shortwall area varies from 770 feet at Panel 1 to 170 feet at Panel 5 (Figure 1). The strata in the shortwall area is summarized in the three core logs shown in Figure 2. Hole no. 2 is located in approximately the center of the mined shortwall area (Panel 3, Line C, Figure 1). The coal seam in the shortwall area is approximately 4 feet thick and horizontal, although one major ‘roll’ intersects all panels.

Several wall rock porphyry or pyrometascmatic copper deposits occur within the metamorphosed Paleozoic formations along the northern and eastern flanks of the Little Dragoon Mountains. Rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent occur in the area. The Tertiary age Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded the sedimentary section in the eastern half of the range metamorphosing the Paleozoic carbonate units to tactites composed of garnet, diopside, and tremolite. Copper, zinc, and molybdenum minerals deposited in sites which are structurally controlled and stratigraphically favorable. Because the deposits are covered by alluvium, the information on structure, alteration, and mineralization is based upon a study of the diamond drilling programs. The mineralized district can be divided into four areas: 1) The Johnson Camp copper-zinc deposits; 2) The Dragoon copper deposit; 3) The I-10 copper-molybdenum deposit; 4) The Strong & Harris copper-zinc deposit. On the southwest end of the range beneath alluvial cover, the Cretaceous Bisbee Group was thrust over Precambrian and Paleozoic formations. The Tertiary Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded and metamorphosed them. In the upper plate, the Cretaceous sediments near the intrusive were metamorphosed to metaquartzite and andalusite and sillimanite schists. In the lower plate the Martin and Horquilla formations were marbleized. The lower Abrigo was metamorphosed to epidote rich calc-silicate tactites and biotite hornfels. A composite geologic cross section, based upon diamond drilling,, through the Dragoon copper deposit is shown in Fig. 1. The geologic events which formed this deposit are: 1. A faulted section of Precambrian Pioneer formation and diabase and Cambrian Bolsa and Abrigo formations was thrust over Pennsylvanian Horquilla formation. The story of America's progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill's mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). As indicated in the introduction to this paper, it is a sequel to that which I gave to the last annual meeting in Atlanta in march. This paper goes further into aspects of crushing and screening, primarily from the standpoint of circuit control. There has been little published by equipment manufacturers on this subject and this is the first paper on crushing circuit control to be sponsored by Allis-Chalmers corporation. By proper control over the use of crushing energy, we will be able to produce finished products from feed materials uti¬lizing minimum capital for the lowest cost of production. The subject will be discussed as follows. Firstly, we will look briefly at what we are trying to accomplish; Secondly, what is presently available in the way of technology; Thirdly, we will look at a suggested new system of control which will best fit the parameters of the normal crushing and screening operation; As a conclusion, I will summarize the advantages of the new system.

The Rapidex continuous drill and blast tunneling concept utilizes a unique spiral blasting pattern that permits efficient performance with relatively small single shots, while at the same time directing major blast fragments at right angles to the tunnel axis. The concept's self-shielding geometry permits the design of a lightly shielded machine that can stay at the tunnel face firing frequent small blasts to provide rapid, virtually continuous advance. This paper describes Phase III of the development program (supported under Bureau of Mines contract H0252047) in which the "front end" of the machine?drilling loading, and shooting components, together with the shield--was fabricated and field tested underground at the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan. One of the major accomplishments of the Phase III effort was to develop a fully remote controlled loading and initiation system in which explosive slurry is pushed, through a hose into the blasthole by a small water-driven piston carrying the blasting cap. The cap is ignited via an induction coil just prior to entry into the borehole, after which a delay permits complete -withdrawal and shielding of the loading hose. The ultimate objective of the present Bureau-sponsored program is to evaluate the feasibility of mechanizing hard rock mining operations, such as development to a point where drilling, loading, shooting, and mucking can proceed simultaneously and result in increased productivity.

Introduction The Kaiser Resources Ltd. hydraulic coal mine is located in south eastern British Columbia, Canada, at the western end of the Crowsnest Pass, next to the Town of Sparwood. The seam presently being mined is the number 10, known locally as the Balmer seam, which is a high quality coking coal, 50 feet in thickness and of an average inclination of 35 degrees. The mine was designed in the late sixties as a small scale trial unit, and was to use a single monitor unit, working 3 shifts per day on a 5 day per week basis. Experience has proved the method to be so successful as to warrant the expansion of the ancilliary facilities to cater for the increased production. The annual raw coal production from this single monitor unit has risen from 108,988 short tons in 1970 to 942,334 short tons in 1975, with a total mine labour force of about 160 men including the surface de-watering plant, mine supervision and mine administration.

Based on laboratory structure analyses, a pilot plant investigation was undertaken to evaluate a Michigan conglomerate native copper ore. Comminution or sized feed was accomplished using wet, closed circuit autogenous grinding with and without crushing of the recirculating load. Coarse metallics were concentrated in two stages of jigging with fine metallic copper being recovered in a three-stage xanthate flotation circuit. With a feed averaging 2.09 % Cu, copper recovery ranged from 86-93 % Cu with an average grade of 55.5 % Ca. An evaluation of the processing flowsheet is made in terms of pertinent independent, dependent, and external variables and design factors. Rate equations are developed to describe the grinding and flotation circuits separately as well as the entire circuit as a whole. Performance equations for the overall operation and for the unit operation of autogenous grinding alone are developed in terms of suitable capacity, efficiency and energy consumption terms. Thus, the effects of feed rate, recirculating load and flowsheet design can be rationally evaluated. Energy consumption for various conditions in the pilot plant is compared to the laboratory value. Additionally, size and scale up factors are discussed. Recommendations are made for further studies to be undertaken to further quantify the ore characteristics and the nature of the autogenous grinding operation. However, the feasibilty of beneficiation of this type of native copper ore by means of an autogenous grinding/jigging/flotation circuit is clearly established.

Design, development, factory test, and in-mine evaluation plans are presented for an Automated Extraction System (AES) that has been designed to fill needs which are present in the Mining Industry. The philosophy of design and proposed operation of the machine, as well as the relationships between these factors, and final machine configuration are reviewed. The AES is designed to overcome production problems resulting from the regulation of roof control, clean-up, ventilation, dust suppression, and operator protection required by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. The design permits more continuous operation and greatly improves operator safety. The machine is a full-face drum-type continuous miner which includes self-advancing, continuous temporary roof support. Onboard self-advancing face ventilation, dust suppression, and air scrubbing equipment are also included in the design. A further improvement over existing equipment is the incorporation of an automatic programmed cutting cycle control system. All mining functions including movements of the roof support system are handled by this automatic system.

The use of explosives in deep rock mining carries conventional blasting technology into a relatively new and unexplored realm. Although bill ions of pounds of explosives are used fairly routinely in mining, quarrying, and construction, almost all of these uses are surface blasting. Most of the in sib processes that are proposed for recovery of mineral or energy resources require the creation of high permeability to provide well defined flow paths in the resource bed. At present there is very little information on the fracturing produced by explosives deep in the earth, and the technology for using explosives in deep rock mining is just evolving. A qualitative understanding of the applicable mechanisms in deep rock fracture leads to some key parameters in the selection of explosives for deep rock mining. The selection and characterization process involves a careful analysis of the field environment and the establishment of tests to determine candidate explosives response to planned and accidental stimuli. The details of this selection and characterization process are given for a few candidate explosives. The use of explosives in deep rock mining must be considered as one of the possible tools for recovery of yet untrapped energy and mineral resources. A basic understanding of explosive deep rock fracture will allow optimum selection of explosive processes or other more appropriate methods for recovery of energy or minerals from a particular resource area. The results of some experimental studies are discussed.

A closed grinding circuit, typified by a ball mill-cyclone combination, is often required to treat a feed comprised of a variety of minerals of differing properties. Usually, the individual behaviour of the minerals is not assessed, a procedure which requires sizing and metal or mineralogical assaying of each size fraction. Further, sizing is frequently by screening to perhaps 325 mesh meaning that detail on the important -44 um fraction is unavailable. It is well appreciated that minerals can exhibit both individual classifying and grinding behaviour. Recognizing that cyclone classification results from differential centrifugal settling and acceleration rates, then minerals of differing specific gravity will exhibit individual mineral cyclone performance curves. If the minerals have differing grindabilities, then individual mineral rates of breakage may be expected. When treating an ore containing minerals of a range in specific gravity and/or grindability, individual mineral behaviour in the closed-circuit grind could be notable and perhaps important to the overall concentrator performance. An example is a lead-zinc ore, as shown by Kelsall et al.(1,2) This paper describes the individual mineral cyclone performance curves at sizes down to ti 10 um for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators; the Sullivan concentrator at Kimberley, British Columbia, and the Pine Point Mines concentrator at Pine Point, North West Territories, both operated by Cominco Ltd. In addition, individual mineral grinding behaviour for the four major minerals at the Sullivan concentrator is presented.
