Improvements in computer technology and associated software have allowed the improvement and development of more advanced ventilation modeling software packages including those that have the ability to simulate the effects of a mine fire on the ventilation system in terms of heat, smoke and gas distribution. This ability has real applications for the mining industry in terms of emergency planning, training and response. The primary focus of this paper will be the benefits to training programs that this type of software can provide to all types of training for various personnel, from the newly hired inexperienced miner, mine rescue, atmospheric monitoring personnel and emergency evacuation drills. The results of the simulations can then be used to give miner?s more detailed information on what types of conditions they may face based on the type and location of the fire and the program itself can be used to manipulate the ventilation system in a way that emergency response personnel may (i.e. tear down stoppings to reduce airflow to the fire area) and see the effects in real-time.

The intent of this paper is to try to answer the complex question: "How much grinding capacity should be designed into a new mining - milling project?" Much work has been devoted to the technical aspects of grinding, the "how" of grinding. But, in the writers' opinion, the economically important subject of optimizing grinding capacity in mill design has not received the attention it deserves, at least not in published literature. For the purpose of this paper it is necessary to distinguish clearly between optimizing operation and optimizing design. Optimizing operation involves making the best use of the available plant and equipment. Much excellent work has been done and is being done in this area. In operation, one can make tradeoffs of production rate and recovery, or recovery and grade, to maximize profits. However, this must be done within the limitations imposed in the design stage. Flexibility is limited by the existing plant. In project design, on the other hand., there are no preexisting physical limitations except as imposed by nature itself; the planners and designers have considerable latitude in their efforts to optimize the overall project. They have complete control over a large number of important design variables from the mine to the finished product. The grinding process design is one of these variables. It not only determines the capital cost charges for grinding and the maximum grinding capacity that operating management will have to work with, but also determines the range of capability of the auxiliary equipment, which fixes the degree of flexibility possible in operation. This paper is concerned with optimizing design rather than operation. The terms "optimum" and "optimize" are sometimes used in a technical sense in connection with grinding, recovery or grade. In this paper, these terms are used only in the economic sense. In this age of working large deposits of ever lower grade ores, it is in¬creasingly essential to design projects and plants for optimum economics, based on the most applicable economic. criteria. Since grinding represents a large part of both capital and operating cost of the project, and largely determines percentage recovery of metal, it should be included as one of the factors in optimizing the project design. This paper is written primarily with reference to medium to large copper concentrators employing conventional wet grinding. However, the principles involved should be applicable to other ores and other methods of grinding.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. Everybody has an opinion what the quality of a grinding mill head casting should be, yet extremely few take the time, or get the opportunity, to compare their opinions against fitness-for-purpose data. The real question is not how flawless the casting should/could be, but rather how long will ?this? casting survive in operation. To validate an opinion on this topic one needs either extensive historical data, or comprehensive experimental data, or preferably, a combination of both. The same data can also be used to establish the conservativeness, or lack thereof, of analytical prediction methods.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on longwall mining in the United States. Part one was published in the December 2005 issue of ME (pp. 21-26). It provided a history of longwall coal mining in the United States. It also discussed the technology involved in the productivity gains and operational improvements. Boyd anticipates that U.S. coal production will increase by 61 Mt (67 million st) (6 percent) from 2004 to 2010. A combination of higher surface and underground mine production will be required to meet the projected market demand. Boyd’s projections of coal production by major mining methods are shown in Table 1.

Membrane technology has been available for over 36 years, but has been used sparingly in the general mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral wound element construction, pretreatment equipment and techniques and an expanded understanding of membrane fouling and cleaning techniques have dramatically improved the reliability and robustness of membrane based systems in the mining industry. Harrison Western has expanded the use of this “new” technology to enhance the use of membrane technologies to separate metals from large volume heap leach mining solutions containing copper, zinc, and iron, gold or silver. Moreover, membrane technologies are ideally suited to fractionations that add value to processing fluids from refineries like separating metals from acids or concentrating acids and producing high quality process fluids. Finally, wastewater from Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) or, as in the case of the Newmont Yanacocha Mine in Peru, the treatment of excess barren leach solution created during the rainy season, can be cost effectively processed to meet World Bank Standards for surface discharge. Polymeric membranes, specifically thin-film composites, have been developed that will purify, fractionate or concentrate gold, silver, copper, zinc or nickel. Recent applications have been developed for spiral wound modules that operate across the pH spectrum from 0 to 14. Systems using membranes have been constructed that operate on feed streams from 140° C to 300 centipoise. Opportunities exist to apply membrane technology to concentrate gold, silver, copper, zinc or nickel using thin film composite membranes. Engineered membrane types can operate across the spectrum from low pH (<2) acid applications to high pH > 10 cyanide applications. Incorporating HW EMS™ membrane technologies into current mining operations could allow one to increase production because the membrane technology would be used to pre-concentrate heap leach solutions, and therefore, increase utilization of existing extraction and refinery capabilities.

Introduction Screening is an art, one of the oldest in the process field today, and one of the most widely used in our present age. Screening is being applied to an ever-increasing number of assignments, in an ever-expanding circle of industries. Screening is defined precisely as a mechanical process which accomplishes a separation of particles on the basis of size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. Particles are presented to apertures in a screening surface and rejected if larger than the opening, or accepted and passed through if smaller. Screens are machines with screening surfaces used to classify materials by size. The screening surface is the medium containing the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Screens are put to many uses - size separation, dewatering, desliming, media recovery, scalping, trash removal, washing, dedusting, conveying, concentration, and many combinations of these functions. Metal producers are now suffering through a major downturn in prices for their products even though it has only been a few years since they were enjoying high prices. From an historical perspective, the current situation is another of the cyclical downturns that often occur every five to seven years. This paper uses time-trend decomposition techniques to identify the cycles and statistical methods to find the duration of these cycles for a variety of metal prices. Given some idea of how long and severe these cycles typically are, the mining industry can better plan to weather the downturns and take advantage of the upturns. For example, timing investments in new projects to take advantage of the cyclical upturns can dramatically improve project profitability.

The mining industry of the World, and particularly of the United States, has made a complete reversal from underground to surface mining methods since the turn of the 20th Century. This has occurred even as average ore grades were decreasing and strip ratios rising. In the early 1900&apos;s there were over 100 underground mines producing from the three iron ranges of Minnesota -- today there are hone. Practically all of our coal prior to 1930 was mined underground; today over one-third is from surface operations and that percentage is increasing. Although world mining has hot changed to surface techniques as rapidly as has the U. S. Industry, the shift is escalating and will approach our figures shortly. A comparison of World and U. S. production figures are shown in Table 1, taken from the AIME Surface Mining volume, and the trend rates for the U. S. are depicted in Fig. 1.

The hydrometallurgical treatment of gold and silver ores by ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions in the presence of a copper catalyst has been actively studied in recent years. Such a process strategy is very attractive due to the low toxicity of the lixiviant and the efficient recovery of the precious metals from difficult-to-treat ores. Important features of the ammoniacal thiosulfate system for the recovery of precious metals from various sources are reviewed in this paper, including leaching, metal recovery, and system stability.

Companies are constantly searching for more effective methods of controlling and reducing costs. In recent years increased emphasis has been placed on cost reporting to the middle manager and down to the first-line foreman because this is the place where the money is really spent. Traditionally, operations management has been relegated to using cost systems designed by financial management for the use of financial management. They reflect the machinery necessary to produce profit and loss statements, and so-called cost reports emanating from these systems frequently have a heavy orientation toward product costing rather than the cost that an individual manager or foreman actually controls. In addition to direct operating costs by function or product type, they often include overhead allocations from local operations as well as from the home office. This type of full-absorption costing has many worthwhile uses but is of little or no use to operations management for cost control purposes. It is particularly discouraging to many supervisors because it includes so many categories of cost over which they have little or no control. It is for this reason that modern, aggressively managed companies are increasingly moving in the direction of responsibility cost reporting. It is the objective of responsibility cost reporting to report only direct operating costs over which the individual manager or foreman has complete control, thus facilitating cost control by fixing responsibility for cost.

After mope than fifty years Of Continuous operation, the Nevada Mines Division found itself faced with declining ore headings and metallurgical efficiencies, and rising operating costs. Although intensive process improvement programs had been initiated at various times in its history, insufficient return on investment served to defeat plans for any major changes in circuitry. The advent of practical large-volume flotation machinery, along with the success of long-range exploration drilling programs, complimented the results of an intensive program of research and development. The result of laboratory testing, pilot plant testing, and full scale plant tests was the proven indication of metallurgical improvement given increased flotation residence time and the effect of mechanical agitation in flotation.

FTIR measurements using a special ATR cell were carried out to investigate the adsorption of two thiol collectors, potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and sodium diethyl dithlophoshate (NaDTP), on an unoxidized lead sulfide surface. Both qualitative and quantitative determinations of the collectors were made at the coverages from two monolayers down to 2% of the monolayer. The experiments revealed that the thiol collector species coordinate to the lead atoms at the surface of lead sulfide but the surface products distinctly differ from the precipitated bulk lead compounds. There exists a linear relationship between the coverage and the signal intensity of the IR spectra within the coverage range studied.

This paper presents the use of the Jaggi-Freedman model for deriving composite environmental sustainability indicators at the mine level (i.e. indicators which focus on both the environmental and economic dimension of the sustainable development) using environmental, economic and/or integrated indicators (i.e. indicators which inter-relate two dimensions of sustainability). The derivation of composite environmental sustainability indicators by means of the Jaggi-Freedman model concerns the South-Field lignite mine of Public Power Corporation (PPC) in Western Macedonia. In the light of the results of the present paper it is evident that the performance of South-Field mine, during 1986-1990, was the exclusive domain of large production yearly activities. The considerably low indicators? scores during the 1986-1987 period are attributed to the increased environmental impacts and electrical energy consumed. The merit of this framework is that it can be used both internally, for benchmarking purposes and externally, for sustainability reporting.

In a short section of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system approximately 222.5 m (730 ft) of 6.4 m (21 ft) diameter twin-tube tunnels separated by a 1.8 m (6 ft) narrow pillar were designed to pass under a major eight lane freeway and a metropolitan intersection with only 3.7 m (12 ft) to 5.8 m (19 ft) of loose fill and alluvium cover. The design considerations and the chemical grouting program used to stabilize the alluvial materials is discussed. Also included is a discussion of the novel shield used for tunnel excavation and the effects of the subsequent fire.

The problem of measuring the amount of rock removed during a given time interval is faced by most mining operations. Many methods have been developed with varying degrees of success, dependent upon the mining method and the availability of usable data. The Rosebud Mine has been in production for nearly two years, employing several techniques to estimate monthly production from underground production stopes. The use of three-dimensional solids generated from survey data has greatly improved the reliability and confidence of monthly production reports. The authors will summarize the methodology currently being utilized at Rosebud.

The Perama Hill gold project is an environmentally friendly project designed with the principle of zero discharge to the environment. The main issues of the proposed mine that are addressed in this paper are the water management, the dam and tailings management facility parameters as well as the mine closure plan, which demonstrate the sustainable design of the project. The water plant circuit will operate using 87% of recycled water and rainfalls, while the pumped aquifer is completely unsuitable for any other use. The proposed water management plan is based on different meteorological conditions for every month and optimizes the external water needs. The tailings pond area that is sited on intensely argilized rocks, will be composite-lined resulting in a permeability value of less than 10-10 m/s, and will exceed the safety parameters for maximum earthquake intensity, flood conditions and seepage. Tailings will contain less than 1 ppm cyanides (almost potable water ranges) and will be free of heavy metals (oxide ore material). The proposed rehabilitation plan comprises of decommissioning and demolition of the plant and auxiliary facilities, open pit partial back-filling and recontouring, appropriate capping of the tailings impoundment, revegetation, maintenance of area drainage system and monitoring for 5 years after rehabilitation. The plan is fullycosted, will be prepaid and through the agreed final land uses with the local community and the proposed actions of the corporate responsibility will attribute to the sustainable development of the area. The design of the Perama Hill project according to new EU and UN legislation and practices ensures that it will be the best example of gold mining operations in Greece.

The role of calcareous minerals in that area of the environmental improvement program involving the control or elimination of sulfur oxide emissions is discussed, and a new concept in gas scrubbing, rendering possible the use of calcareous rocks more extensively for this purpose, is presented. Calcareous rocks are defined as the more common limestones, consisting essentially of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. The effect of magnesium carbonate on the reaction rate of limestones and lime toward sulfur oxides in aqueous scrubbing systems is pointed out. The relative economics of lime- stone versus lime as aqueous scrubbing reagents for sulfur dioxide are indicated.
